But how do you keep the political drama from poisoning important relationships? Most want to avoid political talk Many of us are on edge these days, and politics has a way of pushing us over that edge. In a pre-Thanksgiving CBS News/YouGov poll , 71% said they would try to avoid talking about politics over the holiday. "It makes sense that people are feeling a lot of feels right now," said Marblehead-based etiquette expert Jodi R.R. Smith, of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, who suggests political discussions should be avoided if you're sure they're going to be toxic. But, "We are allowed to talk about politics. If we stop talking about it, we can never come together on anything. The question is: Is this the time and place?" How to avoid politics at holiday events Smith advised planners of a fall wedding to insert language in the invitation and program politely requesting that differences be set aside to focus on the couple, and it worked. But Boston etiquette expert Roseanne Thomas, of Protocol Advisors, suggested you have the right to reject unwanted political talk. "You don't have to get involved if you don't want to. If you do, you listen respectfully; you kind of let them know that you've heard what they said; if you want to share your opinions, you do, but otherwise, you say 'OK, that's interesting,' and you move on," she said. Her getaway line and Smith's are notably similar. "'That's interesting, but do you know what I find fascinating?' And you can take the conversation, and move it somewhere else altogether," said Smith. And if guests persist in talking politics? "'If you'll excuse me,' and remove yourself from the situation," Smith said. The experts say you always want to take the high road, even if that means politely walking away from a conversation or avoiding the gathering altogether. Send cookies and your regrets, advised Smith, and consider reconnecting when things cool down. But, Thomas observed, political nerves are more frayed than ever, and people need to remember one thing before they engage: You are not going to change Uncle Bob's or Cousin Jane's mind over the egg nog. "As the CNG vehicle market is poised for significant growth, particularly in the passenger vehicle segment, we aim to capitalise on this opportunity by delivering high-quality solutions to our customers," said Deepak Jain, Promoter Director of LATL. The company's focus, however, remains on establishing itself as a leading provider of systems and components in the evolving 'alternate fuels' segment to support its sustainable and profitable growth journey, he added. Greenfuel is a supplier of high-pressure fuel delivery and storage systems, primarily for CNG and hydrogen automobiles and fire and smoke alarm, detection and suppression systems for the automotive industry, with OEMs like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles as its clients, the company said. This partnership with Greenfuel provides LATL the opportunity to broaden and diversify its portfolio of solutions for automotive OEMs in India. Native to North America, cranberries have long been used by Native Americans as fabric dye, medicine and food. According to folklore, Native Americans gave cranberries to the Pilgrims to be served at the first Thanksgiving in 1621. Cranberries were used to fight infections, and it turns out those same plant compounds are what help prevent urinary tract infections today. A rich source of vitamin C, they were also used to prevent scurvy. We should be enjoying cranberries, packed with nutrients and powerful plant compounds, all year. The cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), brilliant red and tart, is related to the blueberry, lingonberry and huckleberry. The U.S. is the largest producer of the world’s cranberries, of which only 5% are sold fresh. Low in calories and low in sugar, 1 cup of this tart berry packs 22% of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Daily Value of antioxidant vitamin C and 18% of the Daily Value of dietary fiber, which helps control blood sugar. Cranberries get their crimson color from anthocyanins, one of many plant compounds beneficial to health. Notable plant chemicals in cranberries, including anthocyanins, procyanidins and flavonols, may play a role in cancer prevention; cardiovascular and vascular health; digestive health; and urinary tract health. Many studies have shown the potential of cranberries to decrease risk of urinary tract infections in both children and adults. The proanthocyanadins in cranberries reduce the chances that harmful bacteria will adhere to the urinary tract wall and cause infection. Fresh cranberries may only be available from October through December, but many other forms, from frozen, dried and canned to juice and jam, are available year round. Fresh berries should be firm, plump and brightly colored with no brown spots. They’ll last up to two months refrigerated and freeze well. Stir cranberries into hot oatmeal; simmer them with wild rice or other whole-grain side dishes; bake them into cookies, tarts and muffins in place of raisins or chocolate chips; and toss them into salads for a pop of flavor and color. Donna T. from Bismarck, North Dakota, writes: “When the variety of fresh veggies is limited, I buy frozen. I do, however, like to keep store-purchased canned veggies in my pantry and use them in tight squeezes. I am confused by statements that canned veggies are highly nutritious and comparable to frozen. Comparing nutrition labels does not seem to support this statement. I would so appreciate your input.” Fresh veggies certainly are best if available — and if they don’t lose precious nutrients by overcooking or languishing too long in the fridge. But don’t feel bad about using frozen and canned varieties, too. They are picked at the peak of ripeness and generally processed right away, which helps maintain nutrients. In fact, the current 2020- 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage us to eat a variety of vegetables including “fresh, frozen and canned.” While frozen and canned veggies both have their place, some facts about canned goods may surprise you. For one, they may literally save your life in an emergency when refrigerated food is not available. What about sodium? According to the Canned Food Alliance (mealtime.org), salt or sodium is not used to preserve canned food. That’s done with heat and cooling. So it’s OK to look for lower-sodium versions if needed. Or you can simply drain and rinse beans and other canned vegetables to get rid of 40% or more of the added sodium. Interestingly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the major sources of sodium in our food are pizza, cold cuts, cured meat, bread, rolls, burgers and sandwiches. Canned food is not even in the top 10. What about nutrients and other beneficial substances? Some, such as lycopene (the healthful red pigment in tomatoes) and beta carotene (which converts to vitamin A in the body), are actually enhanced in heat-processed canned vegetables. Vitamin C is another story. It is the least stable of all vitamins and is easily destroyed by heat and exposure to air. However, according to a 2021 review in the journal Antioxidants, new technologies can now preserve the vitamin C content in many canned foods. I have a can of 100% vegetable juice in my cupboard, and it contains more vitamin C than a medium orange. “The general conclusion of this review,” say these authors, “was that while canned foods are often perceived as less nutritious than fresh or frozen products, the research reveals that this is not always true.” Susan C. from Lynchburg, Virginia, responded to a recent column about feeding picky grandkids: “You said you always want to throw in a vegetable and that you saw a tomato on your counter. The S&P 500 fell 0.6%, coming off its 57th all-time high of the year so far. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 240 points, or 0.5%, and the Nasdaq composite pulled back 0.6% from its own record. Nvidia’s fall of 2.5% was by far the heaviest weight on the S&P 500 after China said it’s investigating the company over suspected violations of Chinese anti-monopoly laws. Nvidia has skyrocketed to become one of Wall Street’s most valuable companies because its chips are driving much of the world’s move into artificial-intelligence technology. That gives its stock’s movements more sway on the S&P 500 than nearly every other. Nvidia’s drop overshadowed gains in Hong Kong and for Chinese stocks trading in the United States on hopes that China will deliver more stimulus for the world’s second-largest economy. Roughly three in seven of the stocks in the S&P 500 also rose. The week’s highlight for Wall Street will arrive midweek when the latest updates on inflation arrive. Economists expect Wednesday’s report to show the inflation that U.S. consumers are feeling remained stuck at close to the same level last month. A separate report on Thursday, meanwhile, could show an acceleration in inflation at the wholesale level. They’re the last big pieces of data the Federal Reserve will get before its meeting next week on interest rates. The widespread expectation is still that the central bank will cut its main interest rate for the third time this year. The Fed has been easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high since September to offer more help for the slowing job market, after bringing inflation nearly all the way down to its 2% target. Lower interest rates can ease the brakes off the economy, but they can also offer more fuel for inflation. Expectations for a series of cuts from the Fed have been a major reason the S&P 500 has set so many all-time highs this year. “Investors should enjoy this rally while it lasts—there’s little on the horizon to disrupt the momentum through year-end,” according to Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide, though he warns stocks could stumble soon because of how overheated they’ve gotten. On Wall Street, Interpublic Group rose 3.6% after rival Omnicom said it would buy the marketing and communications firm in an all-stock deal. The pair had a combined revenue of $25.6 billion last year. Omnicom, meanwhile, sank 10.2%. Macy’s climbed 1.8% after an activist investor, Barington Capital Group, called on the retailer to buy back at least $2 billion of its own stock over the next three years and make other moves to help boost its stock price. Super Micro Computer rose 0.5% after saying it got an extension that will keep its stock listed on the Nasdaq through Feb. 25, as it works to file its delayed annual report and other required financial statements. Earlier this month, the maker of servers used in artificial-intelligence technology said an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or by the company’s board following the resignation of its public auditor . All told, the S&P 500 fell 37.42 points to 6,052.85. The Dow dipped 240.59 to 4,401.93, and the Nasdaq composite lost 123.08 to 19,736.69. In the oil market, a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude rallied 1.7% to settle at $68.37 following the overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar Assad, who sought asylum in Moscow after rebels. Brent crude, the international standard, added 1.4% to $72.14 per barrel. The price of gold also rose 1% to $2,685.80 per ounce amid the uncertainty created by the end of the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule. In stock markets abroad, the Hang Seng jumped 2.8% in Hong Kong after top Chinese leaders agreed on a “moderately loose” monetary policy for the world’s second-largest economy. That’s a shift away from a more cautious, “prudent” stance for the first time in 10 years. A major planning meeting later this week could also bring more stimulus for the Chinese economy. U.S.-listed stocks of several Chinese companies climbed, including a 12.4% jump for electric-vehicle company Nio and a 7.4% rise for Alibaba Group. Stocks in Shanghai, though, were roughly flat. In Seoul, South Korea’s Kospi slumped 2.8% as the fallout continues from President Yoon Suk Yeol ’s brief declaration of martial law last week in the midst of a budget dispute.
