The Baltimore Police Department has been sharing information about juveniles’ records when arrested on social media. The same thing happened Friday with a carjacking case that BPD said involved multiple juveniles, but the leader of the Department of Juvenile Services warned against trusting all the information being shared online. On Dec. 12, just after 8:30 a.m., Northern District patrol officers responded to a call of an unarmed carjacking along York Road. Officers learned an 81-year-old woman was carjacked by a group of young people. Later that afternoon, the Regional Auto Theft Task Force units located the vehicle and arrested three 15-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl. BPD stated that the three 15-year-old boys were “not strangers to law enforcement, have a prior handgun violation arrest, burglary, and aggravated assault.” All four juveniles were taken to the Juvenile Justice Center and released to their parents, according to BPD. During an event in Annapolis, DJS Secretary Vincent Schiraldi said the information posted online should be “fact checked” and said information shared by agencies such as BPD may be illegal. “Don’t believe everything you see on X; sometimes people make mistakes when they put things out on X. Baltimore Police put something about a kid with priors; that juvenile was actually deceased. People really need to fact check. We shouldn’t be discussing confidential information about children on X; there is a real issue there,” Schiraldi said.
