A special alcohol-free zone will be created in South Albury to stop anti-social behaviour linked to the annual Chryslers on the Murray car show. or signup to continue reading A temporary ban on boozing in an area bounded by Union Bridge in the south, Smollett Street in the north, Wodonga Place in the west and Townsend Street in the east is set to apply for the next two March weekends when the event is held. There would also be a non-permanent alcohol prohibited area in the nearby parks alongside the Murray River over the same dates. Albury Council will vote on a recommendation supporting the new measures at its meeting on Monday, November 25, with an opportunity for feedback with the proposals to be publicly exhibited for 30 days. The crackdown on alcohol follows a brawl during an unsanctioned cruise along Wodonga Place as part of this year's Chrysler gathering. The parade of vehicles has been occurring for years, but in Albury Wodonga Chrysler Club president Rod Taylor welcomed the council adopting the alcohol-free area, which will be in force from 5pm to 9am across the Friday and Saturday nights. "We 100 per cent support that," Mr Taylor said. "It will just calm things down a bit more, it's a move in the right direction. "Most of the people understood that it was getting a bit out of hand and something had to be done because it was getting a bit dangerous." Mr Taylor said he would also like police to have a mobile random breath testing unit in the area as a deterrent. He attended the and saw police there rotating around such a unit and believed it should be replicated in Albury. Albury Council has already committed to having its mobile security camera trailer in the cruise area to allow police to monitor behaviour and communicate with crowds via onboard loud speakers. In their report to Monday night's meeting, the council's community safety partner Julia Vesval and acting team leader communities Diane Small note NSW police have concerns about spectator safety and their resources being strained. Police stated roads, such as Wodonga Place, could not be closed due to the need for emergency access and their heavy vehicle route status. The council staff conclude the proposed CCTV trailer deployment and alcohol-free zones "will ensure the streets and open spaces are available equally for the enjoyment of everyone, while remaining relevant to contemporary community expectations, and continue to provide a collective vision that supports cohesive growth and enhancement of our city". Chryslers on the Murray, which is centred on Wodonga's Gateway Island, is tipped to attract 7000 car fans and inject $2.8 million into the Border economy. The comment, given in a brief interview to CNBC off the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, was the strongest suggestion yet that, if confirmed to take over the Department Health and Human Services, Kennedy wouldn't necessarily move to block access to a class of drugs that he's sharply criticized in the past but that doctors are hailing as a powerful tool in the obesity epidemic. When asked how he felt by drugs that mimic the actions of the GLP-1 hormone, Kennedy said "the first line of response should be lifestyle, it should be eating well, making sure that you don't get obese, and that those GLP drugs have a place." The seeming endorsement of medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound from two people who have Trump's ear is likely to be a relief for the pharmaceutical industry following Kennedy's sharp questioning of America's reliance on weight-loss medications. Previously, Kennedy has said that if America paid more for quality food, it would solve the obesity crisis "overnight" -- a statement obesity experts criticized as overly simplistic. The Biden administration has called for Medicare and Medicaid to expand coverage of weight-loss drugs for people struggling with obesity, not just as a treatment for diabetes. But because that rule won't kick in until 2026, it'll be up to the incoming administration to enact. Covering GLP-1 drugs under federal health insurance programs would come at a significant cost to the country. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that expanding coverage of anti-obesity drugs in Medicare alone would increase federal spending by about $35 billion from 2026 to 2034. Calley Means, a top adviser to Kennedy, has criticized the Biden proposal's embrace of weight-loss drugs instead of pushing lifestyle changes and suggested that the incoming administration should work on "benefit flexibility where patients can work with their doctors on the best solution to reverse obesity for them," including "lifestyle coaching, food interventions, or, in some cases, drugs." Means also said the government should ensure the price mirrors European costs. "The problem isn't that Ozempic exists," Means tweeted on Thursday. "It is the fact that this Danish company has been able to pay US regulators, media, and lawmakers to force this drug down our throats as the only option." In the CNBC interview on Thursday, Kennedy also reiterated his stance that he doesn't oppose all vaccines. While Kennedy has said he's not opposed to all vaccines, he has falsely claimed that childhood vaccines cause autism, despite the retraction of the fraudulent study that originally suggested this link, and numerous subsequent high-quality studies disproving this theory. In a Time magazine interview, Trump said the issue of vaccine safety still warrants a "big discussion" and that he would be open to restricting some vaccines if Kennedy found them "dangerous." Kennedy has said he is "fully vaccinated," except against COVID-19.

Drones for commercial and recreational use have grown rapidly in popularity, despite restrictions on who can operate them and where they can be flown. No-fly zones are enforced around airports, military installations, nuclear plants, certain landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, and sports stadiums during games. Not everybody follows the rules. Sightings at airports have shut down flights in a few instances. Reported sightings of what appear to be drones flying over New Jersey at night in recent weeks have created anxiety among some residents, in part because it is not clear who is operating them or why. Some state and local officials have called for stricter rules to govern drones. After receiving reports of drone activity last month near Morris County, New Jersey, the Federal Aviation Administration issued temporary bans on drone flights over a golf course in Bedminster , New Jersey, that is owned by President-elect Donald Trump, and over Picatinny Arsenal Military Base . The FAA says the bans are in response to requests from “federal security partners.” The FAA is responsible for the regulations governing their use , and Congress has written some requirements into law. With a 2018 law, the Preventing Emerging Threats Act, Congress gave certain agencies in the Homeland Security and Justice departments authority to counter threats from unmanned aircraft to protect the safety of certain facilities. New drones must be outfitted with equipment allowing law enforcement to identify the operator, and Congress gave the agencies the power to detect and take down unmanned aircraft that they consider dangerous. The law spells out where the counter-drone measures can be used, including “national special security events” such as presidential inaugurations and other large gatherings of people. To get a “remote pilot certificate,” you must be at least 16 years old, be proficient in English, pass an aeronautics exam, and not suffer from a ”mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of a small unmanned aircraft system.” Yes, but the FAA imposes restrictions on nighttime operations. Most drones are not allowed to fly at night unless they are equipped with anti-collision lights that are visible for at least 3 miles (4.8 kilometers). Over the past decade, pilots have reported hundreds of close calls between drones and airplanes including airline jets. In some cases, airplane pilots have had to take evasive action to avoid collisions. Drones buzzing over a runway caused flights to be stopped at London’s Gatwick Airport during the Christmas travel rush in 2018 and again in May 2023 . Police dismissed the idea of shooting down the drones, fearing that stray bullets could kill someone. Advances in drone technology have made it harder for law enforcement to find rogue drone operators — bigger drones in particular have more range and power. Some state and local officials in New Jersey are calling for stronger restrictions because of the recent sightings, and that has the drone industry worried. Scott Shtofman, director of government affairs at the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, said putting more limits on drones could have a “chilling effect” on “a growing economic engine for the United States.” “We would definitely oppose anything that is blindly pushing for new regulation of what are right now legal drone operations,” he said. AirSight, a company that sells software against “drone threats,” says more than 20 states have enacted laws against privacy invasion by drones, including Peeping Toms. Will Austin, president of Warren County Community College in New Jersey, and founder of its drone program, says it's up to users to reduce public concern about the machines. Karaoke has been performed with the standard microphone and portable speaker for many years, and we've gotten by fine. But Ikarao , a karaoke speaker company, decided to take karaoke to the next level. They're using technology that we've had at our disposal for years, but for some reason was never implemented well into karaoke speakers to make them more practical and fun. Until now. Their latest flagship product, the Shell S1 Karaoke , is their most affordable karaoke speaker, with a touchscreen tablet, two Bluetooth microphones, and a powerful sound for a small portable speaker. Ikarao sent me their speaker to review. After countless hours of karaoke, I can recommend this to anyone looking for a portable karaoke speaker. There isn't much competition in the market for this kind of device, but the Shell S1 is still a solid product that bests its own catalog of speakers. But I was happily surprised. The Shell S1 is a portable, one-stop shop for everything you need for a karaoke session. This makes it easy to pick up and take with you to a friend's house or around the house. But as I'll explain, it's not perfect. I was blown away by how loud this speaker can get—104 dB, to be exact. That's loud enough to fill most living rooms. There is also a bass boost button on the front (along with volume control, power, Bluetooth, and a local play button to switch the input source) that really bumps the bass substantially. I was able to blast music on my surround sound system and sing over it with just the microphone on the S1 (this is useful if you have a surround sound system you want to use along with the speaker). While portable, the speaker is pretty hefty for its size (nearly 12 pounds), which makes sense—you're jamming two microphones, a tablet, and a stereo speaker in one product. Ikarao includes a shoulder strap to make carrying the S1 around easy. The two Bluetooth microphones are cleverly hidden inside the speaker when you lift up the screen, and they automatically charge as they're stored (just like earbud charging cases). They have a range of about 32 feet, and the batteries last 20 hours. They also have convenient volume controls, a power button that also lets you change through mic effects (including some fun ones), and a button that controls the media so you can play, pause, or skip to the next song in the queue (the mics essentially double as remotes). I was also surprised by how little feedback I received when blasting the volume and getting close to the speaker. I really had to try hard to get any. Overall, the microphone experience was excellent. The back of the speaker has all of the interface inputs and outputs. It has another option for a third wire mic with a 3.5mm input, an AUX input, USB On-The-Go (OTG), a USB port, an HDMI so you can hook up the tablet to a TV, a type-C power inlet for charging, and an AUX out to connect to other speakers. Now, let's get to the fun stuff. Features of the Shell S1 karaoke speaker The touchscreen for the Shell S1 is an Android tablet, but it lacks the ability to download apps, meaning I'm stuck with what it comes with (unless Ikarao decides to do OTA updates in the future). There is also no way to fully customize the EQ, but to be honest, it sounds great out of the box. The Shell S1 has an HDMI output that I was able to connect to my TV quickly and easily. However, I have a surround sound system in my living room that doesn't have an AUX connection, meaning I was stuck playing music only through the Shell S1 speaker. If the Shell S1 had the ability to cast its screen to a smart TV, it would not just make it easier to project into a bigger screen for larger parties, but it would also allow those with surround sound systems to use them for karaoke. Ikarao does give the option to cast to a smart TV using a third-party app that is downloaded in the speaker, but the experience was confusing and I can't imagine anyone at a party (especially after a drink or two) managing to figure it out. A swing and a miss from Ikarao. Although the first thing you might see when you open the screen is YouTube, don't get too excited. It's not the YouTube app; it's just a direct link through a Firefox browser to YouTube. If you ask me, this is a huge dropped ball by Ikarao. Karaoke is mostly done through YouTube, where you can find virtually every song imaginable in a karaoke version, all for free. The web version of YouTube through Firefox with a 10-inch touchscreen is clumsy and slow, to say the least. (If you're wondering, yes, this means you can use the browser to do everything an Android tablet lets you do.) Instead of focusing their efforts on YouTube, Ikarao decided to include the Spotify app. Which is cool, if you're a smart portable speaker. But this is supposed to be a karaoke speaker, and Spotify is not karaoke-friendly. Sure, you can make it work by singing over lyrics or by chance finding an actual karaoke version of your go-to song, but good luck reading along the lyrics. You can also play music through local USB drives. Not as exciting as the other options, but very much appreciated if you find yourself somewhere without wifi or just have a obscure taste in music. Of course, you can also connect your phone directly to the speaker through Bluetooth, but then there's no way to follow along with lyrics, which defeats the point of the karaoke machine. So what good option is left? I saved the best for last. The KaraFun app Ikarao partnered up with KaraFun , a well-thought-out karaoke app that starts at $9.99 a month . This could explain why Ikarao decided not to include YouTube in its speaker, and if this is the reason, it's frustrating. Ikarao does offer a six-month subscription to KaraFun with your purchase, but why not also include the YouTube app? Frustration aside, KaraFun does make full use of the speaker's potential. It's a more seamless experience than using YouTube for karaoke, with a huge catalog of karaoke songs, a queue feature, the ability to join sessions and add songs through any phone just by scanning a QR code on the screen, and a fun feature that lets you take pictures and email them at the end of your session. But if you're not ready to add yet another monthly subscription to your budget, then you'll have to make do with the other options. Bottom line The Shell S1 smart karaoke speaker is impressive and one of a kind. It's very close to being the perfect portable karaoke speaker, although it still has the potential to get there if Ikarao decides to add the YouTube app with an update. If that app also lets you cast YouTube to a TV, karaoke bars might run out of business. But for now, the physical HDMI cable will have to do. Unfortunately, the best way to use the Shell S1 to its full potential is with the KaraFun app, which starts at $9.99 per month. But if you don't mind that, the partnership works very well. The speaker is powerful for its size, the bass boost is strong, and the quality of the music does not falter at high volumes. The two Bluetooth microphones are quality, they control the media, have a long battery life, automatically charge when stored, and have very little feedback. The touchscreen tablet looks good and makes it truly an all-in-one karaoke machine. The speaker is very portable and has everything you need to karaoke out of the box. The ability to play and charge means the party never stops as long as there's an outlet close by. For around $300 to $350, this is a top-notch portable karaoke machine.Advisors Asset Management Inc. Millions more follow online — in nine languages — as St. Nick swoops along the earth's meridians. “We fully expect for Santa to take flight on Dec. 24 and NORAD will track him," the U.S.-Canadian agency said in a statement. On any other night, NORAD is scanning the heavens for potential threats , such as last year's Chinese spy balloon . But on Christmas Eve, volunteers in Colorado Springs, Colorado, are fielding questions like, “When is Santa coming to my house?” and, “Am I on the naughty or nice list?” The endeavor is supported by local and corporate sponsors, who also help shield the tradition from Washington dysfunction. Bob Sommers, 63, a civilian contractor and NORAD volunteer, told The Associated Press that there are "screams and giggles and laughter” when families call in, usually on speakerphone. Sommers often says on the call that everyone must be asleep before Santa arrives, prompting parents to say, "Do you hear what he said? We got to go to bed early." NORAD's annual tracking of Santa has endured since the Cold War , predating ugly sweater parties and Mariah Carey classics . Here's how it began and why the phones keep ringing. Realizing an explanation would be lost on the youngster, Shoup summoned a deep, jolly voice and replied, “Ho, ho, ho! Yes, I am Santa Claus. Have you been a good boy?” Shoup said he learned from the boy's mother that Sears mistakenly printed the top-secret number. He hung up, but the phone soon rang again with a young girl reciting her Christmas list. Fifty calls a day followed, he said. In the pre-digital age, the agency used a 60-by-80-foot (18-by-24-meter) plexiglass map of North America to track unidentified objects. A staff member jokingly drew Santa and his sleigh over the North Pole. The tradition was born. “Note to the kiddies,” began an AP story from Colorado Springs on Dec. 23, 1955. “Santa Claus Friday was assured safe passage into the United States by the Continental Air Defense Command.” In a likely reference to the Soviets, the article noted that Santa was guarded against possible attack from "those who do not believe in Christmas.” Some grinchy journalists have nitpicked Shoup's story, questioning whether a misprint or a misdial prompted the boy's call. In 2014, tech news site Gizmodo cited an International News Service story from Dec. 1, 1955, about a child's call to Shoup. Published in the Pasadena Independent, the article said the child reversed two digits in the Sears number. "When a childish voice asked COC commander Col. Harry Shoup, if there was a Santa Claus at the North Pole, he answered much more roughly than he should — considering the season: ‘There may be a guy called Santa Claus at the North Pole, but he’s not the one I worry about coming from that direction,'" Shoup said in the brief piece. In 2015, The Atlantic magazine doubted the flood of calls to the secret line, while noting that Shoup had a flair for public relations. Phone calls aside, Shoup was indeed media savvy. In 1986, he told the Scripps Howard News Service that he recognized an opportunity when a staff member drew Santa on the glass map in 1955. A lieutenant colonel promised to have it erased. But Shoup said, “You leave it right there,” and summoned public affairs. Shoup wanted to boost morale for the troops and public alike. “Why, it made the military look good — like we’re not all a bunch of snobs who don’t care about Santa Claus,” he said. Shoup died in 2009. A proposed deal that would see three tobacco giants pay out billions to provinces and territories, as well as smokers across Canada, has been approved by the companies' creditors, a lawyer representing some of the creditors said Thursday, calling it an important milestone in a lengthy legal saga. The proposed $32.5-billion global settlement between the companies — JTI-Macdonald Corp., Rothmans, Benson & Hedges and Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd. — and their creditors was announced in October after more than five years of negotiations. Representatives for the creditors, which include provincial governments seeking to recover smoking-related health-care costs as well as plaintiffs in two Quebec class-action lawsuits, voted on the plan in a virtual meeting Thursday afternoon. André Lespérance, who represents plaintiffs in one of the Quebec lawsuits, said creditors overwhelmingly supported the proposal. "We're not surprised, but we're glad the creditors are united right now to see this plan approved," he said in French. Before the plan can be implemented, it must obtain the approval of the court. A hearing has been scheduled for the end of January, and Lespérance said he's optimistic the proposed deal will clear that hurdle as well. "I think we're really close to the end," he said. Dominique Claveau, executive director of the Quebec Council on Tobacco and Health, which is part of the lawsuit, said they look forward to having the court "bring this long-fought battle for justice and truth to its conclusion." The proposed deal includes $24 billion for provinces and territories, $4 billion for tens of thousands of Quebec smokers and their heirs, and more than $2.5 billion for smokers in other provinces and territories. It also includes more than $1 billion for a foundation to help those affected by tobacco-related diseases. British Columbia Premier David Eby, whose province initiated legal action against the three tobacco companies in 1998, said the deal is "a critical step forward after 20 years of litigation." "Tobacco has harmed far too many people, and tobacco companies have avoided accountability for far too long," Eby said in a statement. "We urge tobacco companies to take responsibility for their deceptive actions and accept this plan." At least one of the companies has said it opposes the plan in its current form. The Canadian Cancer Society, which is a social stakeholder in the case, said Thursday it hopes the proposal will be amended before it's approved by the court. Rob Cunningham, the organization's lawyer, said the plan should include smoking-reduction measures and the release of confidential industry documents, similar to what was achieved in the United States decades ago. "There's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to better control the tobacco industry and to reduce tobacco use. We're never going to get this chance again," he said. The foundation funded through the proposed deal should also have its mandate expanded to include prevention of tobacco-related disease and public awareness efforts to help people quit smoking, said Manuel Arango, vice-president of policy and advocacy for Heart & Stroke. "We already have a lot of studies and a lot of knowledge about the treatment of tobacco-related disease," he said. "So it's really about looking forward and helping prevent tobacco-related disease in the future." The proposal is the culmination of a corporate restructuring process set off by a decades-long legal battle over the health effects of smoking. In 2015, a Quebec court ordered the three companies to pay about $15 billion in two class-action lawsuits involving smokers in the province who took up the habit between 1950 and 1998 and either fell ill or were addicted, or their heirs. Four years later, the landmark ruling was upheld by the province's Appeal Court. The companies then sought creditor protection in Ontario in order to negotiate a global settlement with their creditors. All of the legal proceedings against them were put on hold during the talks. Mr Trump’s shares amount to more than half of the company’s stock. It is not clear why Mr Trump transferred the stock. Donald Trump Jr is the sole trustee and has sole voting and investment power over all securities owned by the trust. Trump Media shares were down about 2% at midday, to 34.68 dollars each. At one point on Friday, they were down around 6%. Trump Media shares have been volatile since the company began trading in March. They reached intraday highs close to 80 dollars (£63.70) on the first day of trading, then slumped to all-time lows in September when Mr Trump and other insiders were finally allowed to sell shares after standard lock-up agreements expired. Drones for commercial and recreational use have grown rapidly in popularity, despite restrictions on who can operate them and where they can be flown. No-fly zones are enforced around airports, military installations, nuclear plants, certain landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, and sports stadiums during games. Not everybody follows the rules. Sightings at airports have shut down flights in a few instances. Reported sightings of what appear to be drones flying over New Jersey at night in recent weeks have created anxiety among some residents, in part because it is not clear who is operating them or why. Some state and local officials have called for stricter rules to govern drones. After receiving reports of drone activity last month near Morris County, New Jersey, the Federal Aviation Administration issued temporary bans on drone flights over a golf course in Bedminster , New Jersey, that is owned by President-elect Donald Trump, and over Picatinny Arsenal Military Base . The FAA says the bans are in response to requests from “federal security partners.” The FAA is responsible for the regulations governing their use , and Congress has written some requirements into law. With a 2018 law, the Preventing Emerging Threats Act, Congress gave certain agencies in the Homeland Security and Justice departments authority to counter threats from unmanned aircraft to protect the safety of certain facilities. New drones must be outfitted with equipment allowing law enforcement to identify the operator, and Congress gave the agencies the power to detect and take down unmanned aircraft that they consider dangerous. The law spells out where the counter-drone measures can be used, including “national special security events” such as presidential inaugurations and other large gatherings of people. To get a “remote pilot certificate,” you must be at least 16 years old, be proficient in English, pass an aeronautics exam, and not suffer from a ”mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of a small unmanned aircraft system.” Yes, but the FAA imposes restrictions on nighttime operations. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told NBC New York in an interview Thursday that investigators have uncovered evidence that Luigi Mangione had prior knowledge UnitedHealthcare was holding its annual investor conference in New York City. Mangione also mentioned the company in a note found in his possession when he was detained by police in Pennsylvania. Suspect Luigi Mangione is taken into the Blair County Courthouse on Tuesday in Hollidaysburg, Pa. "We have no indication that he was ever a client of United Healthcare, but he does make mention that it is the fifth largest corporation in America, which would make it the largest healthcare organization in America. So that's possibly why he targeted that company," Kenny said. UnitedHealthcare is in the top 20 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization but is not the fifth largest. It is the largest U.S. health insurer. Mangione remains jailed without bail in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested Monday after being spotted at a McDonald's in the city of Altoona, about 230 miles west of New York City. Sadly, the LCD screen is fixed, nor is it touch sensitive, but the EOS R100 is far and away Canon's cheapest RF-mount mirrorless camera, especially now this two-less bundle has dropped to $499. The two entry-level lenses included are the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM and the RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM, which between them will cover beginners for most photography scenarios. It's not our favorite mirrorless camera, but at this unbeatable price it makes more sense. Melding a compact, rugged body with advanced computational features and a 20MP BSI Live MOS Sensor, the OM-5 is an extremely capable camera for the price. Its superb 5-axis image stabilization provides up to 6.5 stops of compensation for blur-free telephoto and long handheld exposures. If you're into shooting video, then you'll get 4K resolution but only up to 30fps, meaning this camera is probably better for photographers. Combined with the 12-45mm F4 Pro lens, and you have a dream lightweight and rugged package for travel photography.
