These things will take our country nowhere, and I am calling on the Malawi Police Service to do its job of investigating every incident of political violence and bringing suspects to book. “Malawians are peace-loving people and those who use their freedom of political participation orright to demonstrate for violent ends must not be allowed to ruin our reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa. West Virginia governor-elect Patrick Morrisey is expected to bring a new style of governance to Charleston. He’s a Republican, of course, just like outgoing Gov. Jim Justice. But the long-time attorney general for the Mountain State is a more serious, strictly business type of politician, who has spent the last four years fighting the Biden administration and cases of federal overreach on the states. By comparison Justice governed for the past eight years with a more folksy approach, often making headlines for political stunts, including the use of his pet “Babydog” during media events across the state. It remains to be seen if the popular English bulldog will travel with Justice to Washington next year when he replaces long-time Democrat turned-independent Joe Manchin in the U.S. Senate. Justice himself began his eight-year gubernatorial term as a Democrat before quickly switching to the Republican Party and aligning himself with former President Donald Trump. Both Morrisey and Justice will again be aligned with now President-election Donald Trump when they begin their new duties in January. But that is where things could get interesting for Morrisey, who is best known for fighting the Biden administration in Washington, and the Obama administration before that Morrisey, who has served as West Virginia’s attorney general since 2013, will be sworn as governor on Jan. 13. He says his immediate priorities include protecting West Virginia values, fighting federal overreach and unleashing West Virginia’s true “energy potential.” But with a Republican-controlled U.S. House, U.S. Senate and White House, Morrisey may have fewer battles to fight in the governor’s mansion if Republicans can find a way to be unified on both the federal and state level. Still, after eight-years of the Justice administration, it will be interesting to see what directions Governor-elect Patrick Morrisey will take with regards to the Mountain State’s future. We would urge the incoming governor not to forge the deep south counties of southern West Virginia, which are in need of continued assistance on both the state and federal level. For his part, Justice is to be applauded for his efforts in getting both the King Coal Highway and the Coalfields Expressway moving again in Bluefield, Welch and beyond. As a U.S. Senator, he will now be in a far more powerful position to secure additional federal dollars that are urgently needed to keep these highways that he championed as governor moving forward.
