By Mumini AbdulKareem, Ilorin A group, the Kwara Legends, an organisation of people of diverse backgrounds in Kwara, have called for the institutionalisation of the legacies of late Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki. They made the call in Ilọrin during a symposium organised in the memory of the late politician. The programme was themed: “sustaining the Saraki Legacy and Building Inclusive Leadership for the Future”. Speaking at the event, the former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Professor Ali Ahmad, described the late Saraki as an inspirational figure who motivated a lot of people across backgrounds. According to him, late Saraki fondly called Oloye, was a man who seamlessly bridged the gap between the powerful and the ordinary. He said the late statesman favoured humility over grandeur, and was a joyful promoter of education, healthcare and philanthropist. “Saraki inspired countless individuals to strive for excellence and selfless service. “His values of compassion, progress and community upliftment must continue to guide us,” he said. In his lecture, Prof. Fatai Aremu, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Ilorin, observed that Late Saraki was a revered figure in the country. “His vision of inclusive governance and service to people set the framework for a political dynasty that has shaped the state’s development. “There is a need to institutionalise the legacy and the history of late Saraki for the future generations to learn about”, the University don said. He enjoined politicians to learn from the selflessness of Saraki in putting the interest of the masses at heart in the way they govern. In his address, the former Senate President and son of the late politician, Dr Bukola Saraki, said his father left an impact in the country’s political sphere that cannot be erased. Represented by Dr Kabir Bello from the University of Ilorin, the former Senate President said the need to institutionalise his legacies became imperative to avoid any distortion of history. Earlier in his address, Malam Sa’ad Lukman, the Coordinator of Kwara Legends, noted that the organisation has a united vision of a prosperous Kwara. “Kwara Legend is built in the principles of integrity, community service and progress,” he said. In a game with seven ties and 10 lead changes, the Aggies (6-2) took a 78-77 lead when Solomon Washington pulled out a defensive rebound and heaved it up court for Obaseki to convert a two-handed slam with 2:12 to play. Rutgers lost a pass out of bounds, and Taylor made two free throws for a three-point game. Rutgers freshman star Dylan Harper went to the rim in the final seconds but had his shot blocked by Washington. Washington had 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks for Texas A&M. Henry Coleman III and Obaseki also finished with 11 points. For Rutgers (5-3), Ace Bailey led the way with 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jeremiah Williams scored 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Harper had 18 points. Centers Emmanuel Ogbole and Lathan Sommerville each fouled out. Texas A&M scored nine of the last 12 points of the game after trailing by as many as nine earlier in the half. A 10-0 run early in the first half, capped by Washington's three-point play, gave the Aggies a 17-9 lead. INDIANAPOLIS – When the concept of the NFL’s most dangerous offense is broached, the image that first comes to mind likely depends on the age of the beholder. It could be Dan Marino’s Miami Dolphins or perhaps Kurt Warner’s Los Angeles Rams. Maybe it’s Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts or Tom Brady’s New England Patriots. For the youngest observers, it’s likely Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs. Each of those units – no matter the era in which they played – had one thing in common: an explosive passing game that put video game numbers on the stat sheet week in and week out. The Detroit Lions – this year’s highest scoring NFL offense – certainly have that capability. But this is a team that very much reflects the personality of its head coach – former NFL tight end Dan Campbell. In addition to the aerial exploits of quarterback Jared Goff and his fleet of receivers, the Lions (9-1) boast the league’s third-ranked rushing offense. Two players – Jahmyr Gibbs (796 yards, eight touchdowns) and David Montgomery (595 yards, 10 touchdowns) – already have surpassed the 500-yard rushing mark, and Detroit is not afraid to get down in the trenches and bully the opposition when the situation calls for it. “We had a joint practice what, two years ago with them, and I think what stood out is that they are a physical, tough team,” Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. “They come in with a mentality. So it starts with that. It comes from their head coach. He's done a great job with that culture. Then you look at their skillset, right? They've got two really good running backs. Their offensive line is – I mean compared to a lot of the great offensive lines that have played. “So up front, they can run the ball. They can protect. The quarterback is playing – I mean, if he has three incompletions in a game, that's a shocker to him. So they're just very effective. They're very efficient. They've got playmakers on the perimeter. ... If they don't score every series, they're upset. So very explosive that way, and it's a great challenge for us.” Indianapolis has won its last two meetings against Mahomes and the Chiefs in large part by being the more physical team on the field. The Colts ran the ball efficiently in both a 2019 victory at Arrowhead Stadium and a 2023 upset at Lucas Oil Stadium. That helped keep the Kansas City offense on the sideline, and the Indianapolis defense made some big plays at opportune times to further limit the damage. That won’t be a simple formula to replicate Sunday against the Lions. Detroit has the fifth-ranked run defense in terms of total yards and is 11th with an average of 4.3 yards allowed per carry. So keeping the ball out of the Lions’ hands will take significant effort. And when Detroit has possession, it’s absolutely lethal. The Lions average 33.6 points per game and have topped the 40-point barrier four times – including two 52-point showings in the past four weeks, against the Colts’ AFC South rivals Tennessee and Jacksonville. Detroit put up a massive 645 yards of total offense last week against the Jaguars, and its 46-point margin of victory marked the third time this year it has won by more than 35 points. This is domination often witnessed in the college game but rarely at the pro level. “Obviously, they play hard for all four quarters,” Indianapolis defensive tackle DeForest Buckner said. “They play really well together, especially offensively. On the offensive line, they do a really good job working with each other, communicating. They’ve got a lot of great skill players. They’ve probably got one of the best running back duos in the league. Obviously, Jared Goff is playing at a very high level. “So, defensively, we’ve got to be on a lot of our keys and our technique. We’ve just got to continue to communicate better and just make sure that everybody, especially in the run game, are in their gaps and their fits.” Left tackle Bernhard Raimann (knee) did not practice again Thursday, increasing the chances Indianapolis will again start three rookies on the offensive line. Right tackle Braden Smith (foot) was upgraded to full participation. Defensive end Tyquan Lewis (elbow) and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. (back) were full participants for the second straight day. Wide receiver Josh Downs (calf) and cornerback Kenny Moore II (knee) were added to the report but were full participants Thursday. But analysts saw some optimism. “The silver lining we think is that the swift reversal of the martial law underscores the resilience of South Korea’s institutions,” said analysts at BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions. “For now, we expect limited implications for the economy and financial markets as the Bank of Korea and the ministry of finance have responded swiftly by reassuring investors. “Notably, the central bank committed to boosting short-term liquidity and enacting measures to stabilise the forex markets, which aligns with our view that risks around the South Korean won should remain contained for now.” And senior economist for emerging Asia at Natixis CIB Trinh Nguyen said: “We believe this is a growth shock rather than a sovereign risk given the political reverberation of the martial law, which was short-lived. “The incident shows the strength of Korean institutions that prevented it and will indeed raise the questions of how Yoon will govern (already a lame duck) and whether he can continue to govern (impeachment or resignation very likely).” In early trade, Seoul’s Kospi was down 0.3 per cent, having finished more than one per cent down on Wednesday – itself an improvement on the initial drop. Six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick interviewed for the head-coaching job at North Carolina, Inside Carolina and the Raleigh News & Observer reported Thursday. According to the News & Observer, Belichick "blew them away in the interview," yet he is not likely to move forward because he is pushing 73 years old and has no experience in the college game. After he and the New England Patriots agreed to part ways following a 24-year stint, Belichick interviewed for the head job with the Atlanta Falcons, who instead hired Raheem Morris. The North Carolina interview is the first known instance of Belichick showing interest in a college position. Belichick is expected to draw interest for NFL openings in the upcoming hiring cycle. The Tar Heels retained an outside advisory firm to identify coaching candidates to replace Mack Brown, whom they fired at the end of the regular season. Login or signup to continue reading Mission Australia's 2024 Youth Survey Report has revealed the issues plaguing older teenagers, including mental health , violence and housing. From 213 responses in Newcastle and the Hunter, cost of living rated as by far the biggest issue at 60 per cent - five per cent higher than the state-wide response, and 35 per cent were extremely or very concerned. This is despite 95 per cent of local respondents living with parents or guardians. Mission Australia state director NSW Di Kapera said that like many in the community, young people were feeling the impact of inflation and the high cost of housing. "It's distressing that there are families across NSW struggling to pay their rent and afford necessities like groceries," Ms Kapera said. It is the first time cost of living was the issue young people in NSW considered most important in Australia, an increase of more than 20 percentage points on the previous year. Mental health was ranked as the Hunter's second biggest issue at 20 per cent, followed by violence, safety and crime at 15 per cent and housing and homelessness at 14 per cent. Less of the region's youths planned to complete year 12 than the state average, with 72 per cent compared to 92 per cent. More than half of the respondents from the Hunter (59 per cent) also planned to get an apprenticeship, compared to 16 per cent across NSW. Conversely, 18 per cent of Hunter youths had plans to attend university, which shot up to 60 per cent for the state average. Less than half of the young people from the Hunter said they were happy or very happy with their life as a whole, with 53 per cent saying they were either sad/very sad or neither happy not sad. Ms Kapera said she believed the federal government needed to raise income support payments, including Jobseeker and Youth Allowance and lift Commonwealth Rent Assistance to help young people and families. "Continued investment in social and affordable housing, including youth specific options such as youth foyers will also help young people who are navigating an increasingly unaffordable rental market," she said.
