A CJ Logistics truck and a driveryman / Courtesy of CJ Logistics In 2025, Koreans will see a number of small and big changes, including some that will improve convenience in their daily lives and some that may even lead to changes in how they live. Among Korean companies, CJ Logistics is set to take what may be the most aggressive approach yet to promoting customer convenience while affording small and large companies here an extra day for their business. Starting from Jan. 5, CJ Logistics will begin delivering packages seven days a week, including on public holidays, under its "Everyday O-NE" delivery service. O-ne, pronounced oh-nae, means coming or visiting. The new service is expected to further intensify competition between CJ Logistics and Coupang Logistics Services, the logistics unit of e-commerce giant Coupang. Coupang has been strengthening its presence in the parcel delivery market with a seven-day delivery schedule and the next-day "Rocket Delivery" service. With the new weekend delivery service by CJ Logistics, more consumers will now be able to choose any day of the week to receive their orders or have their gifts delivered to their friends or loved ones on the exact day of their special occasions even when they fall on weekends. Korean firms are not the only ones with good, meaningful changes. Two renowned U.S. companies -- Meta Platforms, Inc. and Apple Inc. -- are also coming up with measures to better serve their Korean customers in the new year. Meta's photo-sharing app Instagram will introduce teenage accounts for users aged between 13 and 17 in South Korea starting next month as part of efforts to promote the safety of teens on social media. The "Teen Accounts" will limit unwanted contact and sensitive content, such as violent and sexually explicit materials, for their users. The accounts are also automatically set to only receive messages from other accounts they follow or have previously connected with, and hide potentially offensive comments and messages. Users will receive a reminder to close Instagram after spending a total of 60 minutes on the app each day. A parent or guardian will be allowed to supervise their teen's account, provided both the parent and the teen agree to the arrangement. Apple plans to launch its "Find My" service in Korea next year to help its users locate their Apple devices, personal belongings and even track their friends and family while ensuring the protection of their personal data. The introduction comes 15 years after Apple first created the feature in 2010. South Korea was the only country where Find My was not available due to unknown reasons. Some have speculated the absence was due to the government not providing map data to Apple, citing national security concerns. However, the Korea Communications Commission has clarified that there existed no restrictions on the service in the country. Amid mounting frustration among local Apple users, the company announced in September it will bring the feature to Korea in spring of 2025. On the systemic side, the cap on compensation for parents taking time off from work to take care of their child or children aged eight years or less will be raised to 2.5 million won ($1,738) per month starting in January, up from the current 1.5 million won, for the first three months of their leave. The cap will then drop to 2 million won per month for the following three months and to 1.6 million won for the next six months. The exact amount will vary depending on workers' ordinary wages. gettyimagesbank The government will also pay the full amount monthly, unlike the current policy where 25 percent of the amount is provided six months after the worker returns to his or her job. Early this month, Seoul also unveiled plans to have up to 70 percent of fathers take parental leave by 2030, sharply up from 6.8 percent in 2022, to help tackle the nation's pressing demographic challenges. The total fertility rate, which refers to the average number of expected births per woman in her lifetime, came to 0.76 in the third quarter, far below the 2.1 births per woman needed to maintain a stable population without immigration. The government is pushing to raise the fertility rate to 1 by 2030. In 2025, the minimum wage will exceed 10,000 won per hour for the first time since the country introduced the minimum wage system in 1988. The rate surpassed the 5,000 won mark in 2014. The minimum wage will increase by 1.7 percent to 10,030 won per hour next year from the current 9,860 won. The 2025 hourly wage translates to 2.1 million won per month, based on a 40-hour workweek. On the investment side, the government plans to resume stock short selling on March 31 after establishing a platform to monitor short selling that can help identify illegal transactions. Short selling has been a contentious political issue in South Korea, with retail investors often blaming the practice for driving stocks lower. Meanwhile, Korean students will see some changes in their schools next year. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital textbooks will be introduced in local elementary and secondary schools, in response to a growing call for diversified learning content. AI digital textbooks have been pushed as part of the government's digital education innovation to offer diverse learning content through expanded virtual world (metaverse) and interactive AI technologies. The use of digital textbooks is also expected to make possible customized learning for individual students at different learning levels. Third- and fourth-grade elementary school students and middle and high school freshmen will be the first beneficiaries of digitally customized textbooks that will first be used for mathematics, English and informatics starting in 2025. Moreover, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education plans to open an online classes-only school next year, allowing high school students to take courses that are not available at their own schools. The tentatively named Seoul Integrated Online School will open at the start of the new school year in March, and allow students to receive credit in the same way they do by taking courses at their own schools. The move comes in tandem with the scheduled start of a high school credit system, where students will be allowed to choose subjects they want based on their own career paths and aptitudes. President-elect Donald Trump won back the White House with a campaign that was bigoted and fascist. And from President Joe Biden’s backing of Israel’s ghastly war in Gaza to his ill-fated decision to seek reelection, progressives aren’t celebrating his tenure, either. The next few years will see an onslaught of challenges. If you look closely, you’ll see signs people aren’t just going to roll over and accept it. Here are five that caught my eye. The American public has had it with economic elites. Union activity has been on an upswing for a few years, with union petition filings in 2024 significantly up over 2023. After a successful national strike in 2023, the United Auto Workers won an election in Tennessee this year, a significant breakthrough in the traditionally anti-union South. And more Amazon warehouse workers and drivers are pushing to join. Meanwhile, communities in places such as Wisconsin fought back against a private-equity takeover of nursing care. And nationally, widespread anger exploded over the greed of health insurance companies. Trump likes to play a populist on TV. But if he moves to slash workers’ rights, cut taxes for CEOs and erode access to health care, he’ll have a fight. The movement for a ceasefire in Gaza drew support from a vast, diverse coalition of young people — with additional support from faith communities, unions, environmentalists and others who’d previously stayed “in their lane.” They haven’t succeeded yet. But they’ve won broad, bipartisan public support for a ceasefire, an arms embargo on Israel and, more generally, foreign policy informed by human rights. Democratic politicians, in particular, won’t be able to avoid this issue. Temperatures continue to rise. Natural disasters worsen, and our leaders fail us on climate. The Biden administration’s signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, is unleashing record investments in green jobs, fueling unprecedented growth in renewable power. Meanwhile, Indigenous-led efforts are quietly reintroducing species to their natural habitats. The more local support initiatives such as these win, the harder they’ll be to reverse. One of the worst moments of the 2024 campaign was the ridiculous slander of Haitian Americans in Springfield, Ohio, by Trump, and other right-wingers. Springfield natives turned out to support their Haitian neighbors. Locals flocked to Haitian restaurants, churches and community centers to show their solidarity. The lesson is that, while hardline immigration measures can attract support in the abstract, people feel differently when they realize members of their communities could be affected. Progressives should defend their immigrant neighbors without apology. They may win some unlikely allies if they stand up for what’s right. Forget “red states” and “blue states” — there’s support for progressive ideas in all 50 states. Just look at the election. Several conservative states passed ballot measures to raise the minimum wage, guarantee paid leave, protect abortion access and liberalize marijuana laws. Once you filter out the noise around candidates and ask people about progressive policies directly, even “red state” voters tend to support them. The key is to make candidates run on those policies — without watering them down. Our politics are a mess. But the U.S. isn’t lost — only our leaders are. When Americans organize around our common decency, it will be a lot harder for bullies such as Trump to walk over us. Certo is the communications director of the Institute for Policy Studies. For those on the right side of the political aisle, 2024 was a mixed bag. We had to trudge through the final year of Joe Biden’s disastrous presidency while fighting to prevent the administration from inflicting further economic carnage. Yet we also received an enormous gift with the victory of President-elect Donald Trump. Here are my top five moments of 2024. By far, this was best. Things did not look good for Trump at the start of the year, as he faced a litany of felony charges across multiple jurisdictions. But despite the legal onslaught, Trump refused to back down. (tncms-inline)9a826eb8-a769-4b71-b7ae-7e84438f7477[0](/tncms-inline) Aside from his legal problems, Trump faced several opponents as he fought for the GOP presidential nomination. In the spring, many political pundits and talking heads thought Trump could not win the Republican nomination. Yet he emerged victorious and united the GOP under the “Make America Great Again” banner. Trump then pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in political history as he cruised to victory and helped the Republican Party gain control of both houses of Congress. This election will go down in history as a turning point, considering the vast inroads Trump made among voters who traditionally voted for Democrats. Though the polls were tight heading into the debate between Trump and Biden, the absolutely pitiful performance by Biden completely changed the race. Soon after Biden flopped in front of millions of Americans, the Democratic Party pulled the plug on his reelection effort. Of course, this short-sighted move benefited Trump greatly, as it demonstrated that the sitting president was going senile. More important, it led to the rise of Vice President Kamala Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket. Considering Harris’ flip-flops on basically every central policy position, it really was a blessing in disguise that she inherited Biden’s place and was eventually destroyed by Trump. This could have easily been first or second on my list. In midsummer, Trump was crisscrossing the country, holding outdoor rallies. Unfortunately, Trump’s proclivity to engage with his supporters nearly cost him his life. But despite two would-be assassins somehow evading Secret Service detection — and one fired several shots — Trump was largely unharmed. While this was a blessing, we must never forget that one person, Corey Comperatore, died at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally, and two others were wounded. On Oct. 14, SpaceX launched its Super Heavy Starship, the most powerful rocket in the world. Then, in an unprecedented engineering marvel, the 23-story-tall Super Heavy booster returned to the launch pad in an upright position and was “caught” without a hitch. It was like something straight out of a science-fiction movie, and it demonstrated that the age of space exploration has entered a new chapter. The department, known as DOGE, is an early Christmas present for conservatives and libertarians. For decades, we have been warning that the size and scope of the federal government is unsustainable and that big government is bad news for personal liberty. Finally, some significant spending cuts and institutional reforms are in the offing. With the national debt exceeding $36 trillion and trillion-dollar deficits the new normal, we need to downsize the federal bureaucracy and get back on sound fiscal footing before it is too late. (AP) — Josh Norris broke a tie on a power play with 7:18 left, Leevi Merilainen made 30 saves in his fifth NHL game and the Ottawa Senators beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1 on Sunday night. Ottawa has won seven of its past nine games, while the Wild have lost five of their past seven. The Senators won in Minnesota for the first time since 2016. With starter Linus Ullmark and backup Anton Forsberg out with injuries, the Senators have been relying on Merilainen and Mads Sogaard since before the NHL holiday break. Frederick Gaudreau opened the scoring for Minnesota late in the first period. Ridly Greig tied it early in the second. Claude Giroux added an empty-netter. Senators: A team that finds itself surprisingly in a playoff position after missing the postseason the past six seasons topped a Western Conference contender in Minnesota. Norris has been a big part of the Senators' surge and now ranks second on the team with 14 goals. Wild: A lower-body injury kept Kirill Kaprizov out of his second straight game, but Joel Eriksson Ek returned after missing 11 games with a lower-body injury. The Wild are 17-5-4 with Eriksson Ek in the lineup and 5-6-0 without him. The Wild killed one penalty midway through the third, but Jared Spurgeon went to the box seconds later on a holding call. Norris scored on the power play. The Senators’ nine-game trip continues Thursday at Dallas night. The Wild host Nashville on Tuesday night. AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl
