Maresca led the Foxes to the Sky Bet Championship title last season before joining Chelsea over the summer. Leicester famously toasted their improbable Premier League success in 2016 with an impromptu bash at Vardy’s house. But the venue for last April’s party was not at the striker’s abode, but at Maresca’s house when the players turned up unannounced at 2am. Maresca recalled: “The best present I had from last season was when we got promoted and they arrived at my home. All the team. “This showed the connection between the players; they could go for a party at a different place but they all arrived at my home. It was a fantastic connection and I will always be thankful for them. “I was at home celebrating with my staff and my family and about two o’clock in the morning all the squad was there. We celebrated all together. Last night at Enzo’s 🏡 💙 pic.twitter.com/dqP8BFsDn3 — Leicester City (@LCFC) April 27, 2024 “When I was a player and I won things I never thought to go to the manager’s home. That shows the connection.” Similarly to when they clinched the Premier League crown, Leicester were not actually playing when they found out they were promoted after Leeds lost at QPR. “To be honest I was at home watching the game and when it finished all the staff came over – and later the players,” added the Italian. “They didn’t knock on the door, they were in the garden and knocked on the window. What time did they leave? I don’t remember.” Vardy might not be having a party at the end of this season but he is still banging in the goals at 37 and Maresca rates the striker even more highly than England’s two top goalscorers – Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney. “People don’t realise how good he is,” added Maresca. “I know England have been quite lucky because of Kane and Rooney, this type of striker, they are fantastic. “But Jamie is, if you ask me, the best one.” Maresca returns to the King Power Stadium for the first time with Chelsea on Saturday, but he will be without captain Reece James due to a hamstring problem.FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Senior Volleyball squads from North Peace Secondary School (NPSS) have returned with outstanding performances from B.C. provincials played last weekend. Following up on their 11th-place showing in 2023, the NPSS Senior Girls’ team finished sixth overall at the ‘AAAA’ competition, their strongest showing in at least 15 years. Head coach Alexandra Olsen commended her squad for playing “outstanding” and said the squad played at a high level, losing just twice throughout the tournament. She added that the Grizzlies won the BC Secondary Sports Fair Play award for the second consecutive year. “This was a huge achievement for NPSS and the program,” said Olsen. “There has been consistent growth with the program and it showed in our provincials performance.” “I have so much pride to represent these girls. They are outstanding athletes and humans and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.” Going 3-0 in pool play, NPSS needed a win over North Vancouver’s Argyle to gain a quarter-final position, winning in five sets. This set up a showdown with Kelowna’s Okanagan Mission Secondary. The Grizzlies lost in four sets. They won their next game against Kelowna Secondary before losing to Surrey’s Earl Marriott Secondary. Elsewhere, the Senior Boys Grizzlies represented the north region after playoff champions Prince George Secondary School were unable to go to Vancouver Island for the ‘AAA’ provincials. With a goal of “representing the north well” head coach Scott Hyde says mission accomplished, as the team won its final game to finish 15th overall. “Even with the lower ranking, the boys never got blown out,” said Hyde. “They held their own against every team they faced. This is great news when we think about the future of the team.” With comments from opposing coaches and officials on the teams work ethic and winning desire, the team also snagged the Fair Play Award for their tournament, something Hyde says the team was “very happy” to bring the award home. More information about the NPSS Grizzlies Volleyball teams can be found on the team’s Facebook pages.
CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy finished 26th in the 29-team Major League Soccer standings just one season ago, and their biggest supporters boycotted certain matches to protest a decade of poor performance. The most successful club in league history seemed light years away from its luminous prime. When the Galaxy raised the MLS Cup again Saturday amid confetti and fireworks, their spectacular transformation was complete. In only one year, a team that was profoundly lost had rediscovered its peerless championship pedigree. "We won this trophy, and it's finally back where it belongs," striker Dejan Joveljic said. Joseph Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the first half, and the Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing years, but everything changed after LA spent smartly in the offseason to build a high-scoring new lineup topped by Paintsil, Joveljic and Gabriel Pec. The Galaxy finished second in the Western Conference and streaked through the postseason with an MLS playoff-record 18 goals in five games to win another crown. "I'm just so proud of this group after the challenges that we (had) and the way they bounced back and competed as a group," Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. "We spent a lot of energy at the start, but I'm just so proud of these guys. They've cemented themselves as legends in this club." The Galaxy even won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the conference final. Puig watched this game in a suit, but the Catalan catalyst's teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass in the ninth minute, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their roaring fans during the celebration. "I was really waiting for this moment," said Paintsil, who scored his 14th goal of an impressive season. "I'm much more, 10 times faster than them, and Gaston saw the space. ... It was really a good thing. We did it for Riqui, and we did it for our family that came, and our supporters." Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home his 21st goal. Brugman was named the MLS Cup MVP after a commanding performance in midfield. The Uruguayan hadn't started a match for the Galaxy since Oct. 5 after an injury-slowed season, playing only as a postseason substitute before the final. "I dreamed of that yesterday, of something I could give to the team," Brugman said of his pass to Paintsil. "Today, it happened." Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable postseason charge ended one win shy of their first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. "I love these guys," Schwarz said. "Some guys, they are crying. In the big picture, that's a start. Sometimes when you lose the final, it's tough, but you use this experience to create the next energy, the next intensity." Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons, but Nealis beat the 2022 MLS Cup MVP in the 28th minute when he volleyed from the penalty area. The second half was lively: Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. After Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz received the MLS Cup that bears his name because of his steady financial support of the league during its shaky years, Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida carried the trophy to his teammates for the celebration. The Galaxy extended their lead over DC United (4) for the most MLS Cup championships in league history. The Red Bulls remain one of three original MLS franchises never to win the title, along with FC Dallas and the New England Revolution. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough. But this season was about the Galaxy's rebirth. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández swiftly turned itself into a contender again by acquiring young talents without international fame. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and grabbed Paintsil, a Ghanaian playing in Belgium. The duo combined with Joveljic to form a potent attack with orchestration from Puig, one of MLS' best players. "Losing a guy like Riqui after the performance he put in all season was devastating," McCarthy said. "Even if he wasn't on the field, we did it for him." Cargill has more than 160,000 employees worldwide, and a spokesperson said all operating regions will be affected by cutbacks. CHICAGO - Global commodities trader Cargill began laying off employees across its vast operations on Dec 3 in a drive to slash headcount by 5 per cent, sending US workers from supply chain, inventory control and other roles to look for new jobs. Cargill, a major grain merchant and US beef processor, is facing a downturn in returns in cattle, grains and oilseeds businesses. In Minnesota, home to its headquarters, Cargill plans to terminate 475 employees at an office centre in Wayzata starting on Feb 5, the company said in a letter to state officials. Cargill began informing staff about layoffs this week, and they are eligible for severance, according to the letter. Cargill has more than 160,000 employees worldwide, and a spokesperson said all operating regions will be affected by cutbacks. “The company is facing a cyclical downturn,” said Mr Chris Johnson, agribusiness director for S&P Global Ratings. “Certainly, their exposure to beef is a reason why they have faced a significant shortfall in earnings.” Cargill rival Archer-Daniels-Midland, which does not have a beef business, said on Dec 3 it is seeking to control costs as the challenging commodities cycle is likely to continue into 2025. The cost of cattle has soared for beef processors after drought reduced grazing lands, prompting ranchers to slash the nation’s herd to its smallest size in decades. US meatpacker Tyson Foods said on Dec 2 it is closing a Kansas beef and pork plant. Cargill’s oilseed processing business is also under pressure from uncertain demand for biofuels and lower processing margins, analysts said. Ample supplies of soya beans and corn have pushed prices for the commodity crops near four-year lows, hitting the grains handling business of Cargill, ADM and other rivals such as Bunge. On LinkedIn, several employees in Costa Rica said they had lost their jobs in talent acquisition. US employees in inventory control, marketing, supply chain analysis and the company’s digital technology and data unit also sought new jobs on the networking site. Cargill previously said it will undergo structural changes after missing internal earnings goals. It reported revenue of US$160 billion for its 2024 fiscal year that ended in May, down from a record US$177 billion in the previous year. “We think it’s more of a multi-year process for this strategic change to really impact the company’s profitability,” Mr Johnson said. The Coyotes look to clinch a share of their first Missouri Valley Football Conference title when they face off with North Dakota State in the DakotaDome on Saturday. With the conference title, potential playoff seeding and a chance at revenge for last year’s playoff loss, there are plenty of storylines to observe in this one. ADVERTISEMENT Here are three things I’ll be watching for... Pierre has been a focal point of the Coyote offense this season. He and Travis Theis grew into a truly dynamic duo out of the backfield with complementary skill sets. Since a season-low three rushing attempts against South Dakota State last month, the Coyotes have relied on him heavily in the last two games. And he has certainly delivered. Last week against UND, Pierre had a career day in multiple facets. His 173 rushing yards were a career-high, and so were his 75 receiving yards. He also added a touchdown in both the run and the receiving game. It was the second straight game Pierre went off as against Indiana State in the previous week, he went for 165 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Over those last two games, he’s amassed 338 rushing yards, 413 total yards from scrimmage and four total touchdowns. To say he’s hot right now may be an understatement and the Coyotes will need him to replicate those performances against NDSU. But it certainly won’t be an easy task. The Bison have the third-best rushing defense in the conference. They’ve only allowed 112.8 rushing yards per game, 3.7 yards per rush and opposing offenses have scored 11 rushing touchdowns. Another big game by Pierre and there’s a good chance the offense will be plenty successful. If not, winning this game could become much more difficult. Miller has taken a major step forward this season. Plenty of questions surrounded him entering this year and whether he could lead the Bison like great quarterbacks of the past have done. He put those concerns to bed and will likely be in the running for multiple major awards. If USD wants to pull the upset, it will start with forcing him into miscues. ADVERTISEMENT Mistakes are not something Miller has made many of this season. So far he’s thrown for 2,166 yards and 22 touchdowns with a conference-leading 76.9 completion percentage. He is also listed as the FCS leader in passing efficiency. But what may be more impressive than anything is the fact that he’s only thrown a single interception all year. Only one other quarterback in the country – Montana State’s Tommy Mellott – can boast that achievement. To say the least, Miller has been one of the most efficient and smart quarterbacks in the country. However, the Coyotes certainly have the ability to force him into mistakes. It’ll start up front with the defensive line. The front four will need to find ways to generate consistent pressure and make Miller get the ball out of his hands before he’s ready to throw. Combine that with one of the strongest secondaries in the country and there should be plenty of opportunities for the Coyote defense to make Miller uncomfortable. However, USD needs to be well aware of Miller’s running ability too. He’s rushed for 371 yards and six touchdowns to go along with his strong passing season. Miller will pose the biggest playmaking threat to USD’s defense this season. It is going to take a strong performance across the board to slow him down. With so much on the line, it may even go a bit overlooked that Saturday is senior day. So many seniors on this team have bettered the program for the foreseeable future. Just to name a few, players like Theis, Carter Bell, Dennis Shorter, Nick Gaes and Blake Holden have all made lasting impacts on the program. A win on Saturday could truly cement their legacies. Obviously, the biggest accomplishment that would come from a win against the Bison would be a share of the conference title. The Coyotes have never won the Valley since joining the conference in 2012 and have watched other Dakota schools win it multiple times. A win would also go a long way when it comes to competing for a potential national title. At this rate, a loss could mean no first-round bye for USD in the playoffs. The cancellation of the Portland State game is looming large right now. But a win would all but guarantee a top-eight seed and would likely give the Coyotes a top-five seed. Having a higher seed and a bye would be incredibly helpful. But for now, the focus is just on winning the game in front of them. A win would be a monumental point for the program and would have this senior class being talked about for generations because of what they accomplished.Memphis beats No. 2 UConn 99-97 in overtime to tip off Maui Invitational
