BJP backs Devendra Fadnavis as Eknath Shinde raises CM pitchMUMBAI: Shashi Ruia , cofounder of the metals-to-technology conglomerate Essar Group , passed away at the age of 81 in Mumbai late on Monday night. Ruia, a first-generation entrepreneur, co-founded Essar with his younger brother Ravi Ruia in 1969. It was a maiden venture to build a breakwater project at the Chennai Port, a first for an Indian company, and since then Essar has delivered infrastructure construction projects across India's major ports. In the following two decades the group moved into the energy sector , steel , power and telecommunications. It built one of India's largest telecom operator with Hutchison , a business that it later exited. Under Ruia's stewardship, Essar withstood significant challenges - when insolvency proceedings were initiated to recover unpaid loans. It sold some of its assets to clear debts and reinvented itself. The group currently manages assets worth $9.6 billion across a string of energy, infrastructure, and technology ventures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in a message on social media platform X: "Shri Shashikant Ruia Ji was a colossal figure in the world of industry. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence transformed the business landscape of India. He also set high benchmarks for innovation and growth." "The Chinese people are so miserable," read a social media post in the wake of yet another mass killing in the country earlier this year. The same user also warned: "There will only be more and more copycat attacks." "This tragedy reflects the darkness within society," wrote another. Such bleak assessments, following a spate of deadly incidents in China during 2024, have led to questions about what is driving people to murder strangers en masse to "take revenge on society" . Attacks like this are still rare given China's huge population, and are not new, says David Schak, associate professor at Griffith University in Australia. But they seem to come in waves, often as copycat attempts at garnering attention. This year has been especially distressing. From 2019 to 2023, police recorded three to five cases each year, where perpetrators attacked pedestrians or strangers. In 2024, that number jumped to 19. In 2019, three people were killed and 28 injured in such incidents; in 2023, 16 dead and 40 injured and in 2024, 63 people killed and 166 injured. November was especially bloody. On the 11th of that month, a 62-year-old man ploughed a car into people exercising outside a stadium in the city of Zhuhai, killing at least 35. Police said that the driver had been unhappy with his divorce settlement. He was sentenced to death this week. Days later, in Changde city, a man drove into a crowd of children and parents outside a primary school, injuring 30 of them. The authorities said he was angry over financial losses and family problems. That same week, a 21-year-old who couldn't graduate after failing his exams, went on a stabbing rampage on his campus in Wuxi city, killing eight and injuring 17. In September, a 37-year-old man raced through a Shanghai shopping centre, stabbing people as he went . In June, four American instructors were attacked at a park by a 55-year-old man wielding a knife. And there were two separate attacks on Japanese citizens, including one in which a 10-year-old boy was stabbed to death outside his school. The perpetrators have largely targeted "random people" to show their "displeasure with society", Prof Schak says. In a country with vast surveillance capabilities, where women rarely hesitate to walk alone at night, these killings have sparked understandable unease. So what has prompted so many mass attacks in China this year? A major source of pressure in China right now is the sluggish economy. It is no secret that the country has been struggling with high youth unemployment, massive debt and a real estate crisis which has consumed the life savings of many families, sometimes with nothing to show for it. On the outskirts of most major cities there are entire housing estates where construction has stopped because indebted developers cannot afford to complete them. In 2022, the BBC interviewed people camping in the concrete shells of their own unfinished apartments , without running water, electricity and windows because they had nowhere else to stay. "Optimism certainly does seem to have faded," says George Magnus, a research associate at Oxford University's China Centre. "Let's use the word trapped, just for the moment. I think China has become trapped in a sort of cycle of repression. Social repression and economic repression, on the one hand, and a kind of faltering economic development model on the other." Studies appear to point to a significant change in attitudes, with a measurable increase in pessimism among Chinese people about their personal prospects. A significant US-China joint analysis, which for years had recorded them saying that inequality in society could often be attributed to a lack of effort or ability, found in its most recent survey that people were now blaming an "unfair economic system" . "The question is who do people really blame?" Mr Magnus asks. "And the next step from that is that the system is unfair to me, and I can't break through. I can't change my circumstances." In countries with a healthy media, if you felt you had been fired from your job unfairly or that your home had been demolished by corrupt builders backed by local officials, you might turn to journalists for your story to be heard. But that is rarely an option in China, where the press is controlled by the Communist Party and unlikely to run stories which reflect badly on any level of the government. Then there are the courts – also run by and for the party – which are slow and inefficient. Much was made on social media here of the Zhuhai attacker's alleged motive: that he did not achieve what he believed was a fair divorce settlement in court. Experts say other outlets for venting frustrations have also narrowed or been shut down altogether. Chinese people often air their grievances online, says Lynette Ong, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, who has carried out significant research on how the Chinese state responds to push back from its people. "[They] will go on to the internet and scold the government... just to vent their anger. Or they may organise a small protest which the police would often allow if it's small-scale," she explains. "But this sort of dissent, small dissent, has been closed off in the last couple of years." There are plenty of examples of this: Increased internet censorship, which blocks words or expressions that are deemed controversial or critical; crackdowns on cheeky Halloween costumes that make fun of officialdom; or when plain-clothed men, who appeared to have been mobilised by local officials, beat up protesters in Henan province outside banks which had frozen their accounts. As for dealing with people's mental and emotional responses to these stresses, this too has been found wanting. Specialists say that China's counselling services are vastly inadequate, leaving no outlet for those who feel isolated, alone and depressed in modern Chinese society. "Counselling can help build up emotional resilience," says Professor Silvia Kwok from Hong Kong's City University, adding that China needs to increase its mental health services, especially for at-risk groups who have experienced trauma or those with mental illness. "People need to find different strategies or constructive ways to deal with their emotions... making them less likely to react violently in moments of intense emotional stress." Taken together, these factors suggest the lid is tightening on Chinese society, creating a pressure cooker-like situation. "There are not a lot of people going around mass killing. But still the tensions do seem to be building, and it doesn't look like there is any way it is going to ease up in the near future," Mr Magnus says. What should worry the Communist Party is the commentary from the general public blaming those in power for this. Take this remark for example: "If the government truly acts fairly and justly, there would not be so much anger and grievance in Chinese society... the government's efforts have focused on creating a superficial sense of harmony. While it may appear that they care about disadvantaged people, their actions have instead caused the greatest injustices." While violent attacks have been rising in many countries, according to Professor Ong, the difference in China is that officials have had little experience dealing with them. "I think the authorities are very alarmed because they've not seen it before, and their instinct is to crack down." When China's leader Xi Jinping spoke about the Zhuhai attack, he seemed to acknowledge pressure was building in society. He urged officials across the country to "learn hard lessons from the incident, address risks at their roots, resolve conflicts and disputes early and take proactive measures to prevent extreme crime". But, so far, the lessons learnt seem to have led to a push for quicker police response times using greater surveillance, rather than considering any changes to the way China is run. "China is moving into a new phase, a new phase that we have not seen since the late 70s," Prof Ong says, referring to the time when the country began opening to the world again, unleashing enormous change. "We need to brace for unexpected events, such as a lot of random attacks and pockets of protest and social instability emerging."
Travis Hunter is knocking hard on the Heisman door, but it appears that it’s his QB teammate Shedeur Sanders who will steal the show at the 2025 NFL Draft. Or so is predicted by the NFL pundit Daniel Jeremiah. “He is gonna be the star of the draft,” Jeremiah said about Shedeur on The Rich Eisen Show. “He is gonna be the one that is most asked about.” Considering that QBs have been a major weakness for some lowly NFL teams, this idea doesn’t appear as alien as many would think. With the Giants, Browns, Jets, and Raiders being one of those teams, it boils down to the franchises that are approved by Deion. After all, Deion warned that he would intervene if Shedeur gets paired with the wrong franchise. From how the 2024 CFB season went, one might argue that it hasn’t been a QB-heavy competition and that only a few quarterbacks have truly blossomed—Shedeur and Cam Ward being two of them. Watching how well Colorado has progressed under his leadership, teams would be head over heels for Shedeur, and his electrifying games have only given them more reasons. Not only that, but Shedeur , in his entire college career, has consistently progressed every year. Although Travis Hunter has played a pivotal role in Colorado’s progress, Shedeur has been at the center of it all as a true leader. Furthermore, many have endorsed Shedeur and Travis as the top three picks in the draft for a long time. And with QBs in high demand for next year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Shedeur grab the spotlight.Earnings of Philippine corporations grew slower in the first nine months of this year as the consumer, property and power sectors showed weakness due to high inflation during that period. In its latest Philippine Market Strategy report, COL Financial Group Inc. found that listed companies grew by 5 percent in the January to September period, down from 10.5 percent in the first quarter and 9.6 percent in the first half. Banks were the strongest among the industries as high net interest income and trading gains drove growth. According to COL, nearly all banks listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange booked higher profits, with growth averaging at 12.4 percent. Demand for loans increased, buoyed by consumer and corporate loans, which were up by 17 percent and 11.7 percent, respectively. The telecommunications sector, meanwhile, saw core earnings grow by an average of 19.1 percent on gains from the newer businesses of Globe Telecom Inc. and Converge ICT Solutions Inc. The performance of Manuel Pangilinan-led PLDT Inc. was relatively weaker than its competitors as poor weather led to network outages. Still, COL said these companies “all performed above expectations.” It also pointed out, however, that strength in the banking and telco industries failed to offset the “weaker” performance of the consumer, property and power companies. COL explained that consumer firms “delivered the worst performance” among all the publicly listed companies as high inflation during the period significantly dragged revenues. On average, profits of these firms fell by 10.1 percent as nine out of 13 stocks covered by COL reported “below expected” earnings. Although relatively unaffected by the business cycle, earnings of the power sector also declined by 1.9 percent. This came due to lower commodity and spot market prices, COL said. At the same time, property firms grew by 11.9 percent from 13.9 percent previously due to slower revenue growth. “Going forward, the pace of residential revenue growth might slow down further as takeup sales contracted for the fifth quarter in a row by 14.8 percent in [the third quarter],” COL noted. Earlier, analysts interviewed by the Inquirer explained that rate cuts were “not enough” to give the local market a much-needed boost in the third quarter due to an upside risk. Employees at The Strand, one of New York City’s most iconic bookstores, have walked off the job after authorizing a strike, according to a recent report from Gothamist . The 110 unionized workers at the Strand decided to strike in the middle of the holiday sale season to demand a pay increase above minimum wage, according to Gothamist. Labor organizers have told the news outlet that for now, the three-story book store — noted for having “18 miles of books” —is being staffed solely by managers, part-time employees and administrative staff which are not part of the union. Unionized employees from the Strand, who are a part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, are looking for a wage increase from $16 to $18 dollars an hour, Gothamist reports. “That’s far from enough for workers in the city,” Aaron Eisenberg, political director of the regional UAW told Gothamist. “Our workers at the Strand will continue to be on strike until the owners come back to the table with a real offer.” At the end of November, workers at the Strand voted to organize the strike, with well over 90% approving of the action, according to reporting from The Chief . The last contract for the unionized employees ended on Nov. 28 and there was some belief that the strike could take place on Black Friday, according to The Chief.
Chinese retailers Temu and Shein are rapidly gaining share with “explosive” user growth. SINGAPORE – Increasing competition and an uncertain economic outlook have dampened growth prospects for Singapore’s e-commerce industry. Observers told The Straits Times that while the industry is expected to expand in the coming years, it remains vulnerable to headwinds. Professor Lawrence Loh at the National University of Singapore Business school noted that e-commerce companies saw a surge in hiring during the pandemic to meet sudden spikes in demand, but shoppers are returning to physical stores, creating a likely oversupply of workers. “E-commerce is an industry that is heavily dependent on economic growth fluctuations,” Prof Loh said. “Its imports may also be subject to tariffs in the US, which is expected to intensify such tariffs soon, this is why these companies will be even more vulnerable to revenue shocks in the near future.” Prof Loh said the demand for e-commerce is expected to keep expanding over the next decade, but its growth rate is projected to be far slower than the surge during the Covid-19 pandemic, when consumers flocked to online platforms for purchases. A report published in November by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company found that Singapore’s e-commerce sector grew from US$8 billion (S$10.7 billion) in gross merchandise value (GMV) in 2023 to US$9 billion in 2024. GMV refers to the total value of goods sold between customers or from e-commerce platforms. E-commerce sales here stood at US$4.9 billion in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, and ballooned to around US$8 billion in 2021 and 2022. The expansion in 2024 comes after several layoffs and payment delays in the sector. In January, regional e-commerce company Lazada axed around 100 employees in Singapore, with sources indicating that the company planned to reduce its South-east Asia headcount by 25 per cent to 50 per cent. Local e-commerce company Qoo10 was declared insolvent by the Singapore High Court in November, following its failure to pay merchants using its platform since July. The company also reportedly laid off 80 per cent of its employees in August. Insead Associate Professor Ben Charoenwong said the sector’s volatility stems from several factors. Rising interest rates have heightened pressure on platforms to demonstrate clear pathways to profitability, and this will likely lead to operational restructurings. Another factor is the advancements in technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation that are boosting operational efficiencies, reducing the need for human labour. “Some of the layoffs may reflect this technological transformation rather than purely economic distress, similar to what we’ve observed with major US tech companies,” Prof Charoenwong said. He added that higher capital costs and changing market conditions will likely lead to cost adjustments in the sector. This does not necessarily signal a decline but rather a “natural cycle of maturation”, with businesses focusing on sustainable growth over expanding market share. “The intensity of future adjustments will likely depend on several factors: the trajectory of interest rates, the pace of technological adoption, and broader economic conditions,” he said. “Companies that can adapt their capital budgeting and operational strategies to this new environment while maintaining competitive advantages are likely to emerge stronger.” Growing competition Despite the challenges, e-commerce companies here have been vying for market share in the region in 2024. Bloomberg Intelligence notes that Sea-backed Shopee remained the region’s leading e-commerce platform in 2024, based on GMV and user numbers. The platform’s monthly active users in South-east Asia had grown to nearly 260 million in October, up from just under 250 million in the same period in 2023. Shopee’s GMV is expected to reach US$70 billion in 2024, accounting for about 50 per cent of the region’s total GMV. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Nathan Naidu said Shopee’s parent company Sea has continued to invest in live-streaming features to fend off its rivals in 2024, but TikTok Shop is still the region’s most popular live-streaming e-commerce platform. TikTok Shop is also positioned to overtake second-place Lazada in the near term. The number of people who used Lazada fell to 107 million in October from 120 million a year earlier, likely due to less aggressive promotional tactics than Shopee, TikTok Shop and new entrant Temu. Temu, which is backed by Chinese tech firm PDD, and Shein, a Chinese fast-fashion retailer, are also rapidly gaining share with “explosive” user growth, said Mr Naidu. “Singapore’s e-commerce market is relatively more mature compared with other markets in South-east Asia, hence e-commerce merchants might seek growth opportunities in other countries in the region such as Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines,” he added. Support for Singapore’s SMEs There is potential for Singapore’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) looking to enter the e-commerce sector. E-commerce companies told ST they have introduced various initiatives to help smaller firms tap into opportunities on their platforms. For example, Shopee introduced its Seller Education Hub in 2021, where sellers, including SMEs, can attend workshops and webinars focused on key topics like using AI to improve product listings and search engine optimisation. ST understands that Shopee plans to allow sellers to list products internationally, targeting markets like Malaysia and Thailand, through its Shopee International Platform programme by 2025. Similarly, Amazon launched the Amazon Global Selling Singapore Cross-border Launchpad programme in partnership with Enterprise Singapore and the Singapore Business Federation in 2023. The initiative aims to help over 100 local micro, small and medium-sized enterprises expand into the United States by 2025. The programme aims to equip at least 300 Singapore companies with cross-border e-commerce knowledge through seminars, business reviews and business-matching by 2025. Meanwhile, TikTok Shop allows merchants to live-stream products themselves or through influencers, giving retailers the opportunity to engage users throughout the purchasing process. It also launched its Seller Academy in 2022 to help merchants improve selling techniques and boost brand awareness. Bhavani Stores, which sells its Uncle Saba’s Poppadoms Lentil Chips on Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop in Singapore, is one SME leveraging these initiatives. Managing director Sreenivas Saba said the firm has attended Amazon’s Global Selling Programme, as it aims to enter the US e-commerce market soon. “The great thing about e-commerce platforms today is that they are very easy to get on and start selling,” added Mr Sreenivas. “We want to tackle some large overseas e-commerce platforms next... the good thing is that many of them have workshops which onboard sellers, and we will definitely continue making use of them.” Mr Sreenivas said he has engaged influencer agencies to help market Uncle Saba’s Poppadoms Lentil Chips via live streaming on TikTok shop. He also plans to explore Shopee’s International Platform programme, set to launch in 2025, to expand the business to Thailand and possibly other countries in the region. Ms Maya Kale, co-founder of woman’s wellness platform Moom Health, said platforms like Shopee and TikTok Shop have been helpful with their training workshops. The company’s products, which include natural supplements, are sold on Shopee, TikTok Shop and Lazada. “We definitely plan to continue selling on these platforms, as they provide valuable exposure and help grow our brand,” Ms Kale said. Read 3 articles and stand to win rewards Spin the wheel nowShoats has 18 in Siena's 66-53 victory against CanisiusPitt running back Rodney Hammond’s strange senior season — which began with him being ruled ineligible by the program days before kickoff of the season opener and proceeded with his reinstatement five weeks later — has ended, head coach Pat Narduzzi announced on Monday afternoon. Hammond did not travel with the team for its Week 13 contest at Louisville this past weekend and Narduzzi said it was because Hammond intends to redshirt and preserve his final year of college eligibility. Hammond has appeared in four games this season. If he had played in one more, he would be ineligible for a redshirt year, and his collegiate career would be over. “Rodney would like to redshirt. I’m going to grant his wishes,” Narduzzi said. “Would I like him to play? Yeah. But he’s got to do what he’s got to do, and everybody has got to make a business decision, and I’ll make a business decision, as well, at times.” Narduzzi added that Hammond has not informed the team of whether he intends to stay in Pittsburgh or enter the transfer portal when it officially opens on Dec. 9. “That’s the last thing I’m worried about,” Narduzzi said. “I’m worried about our football team that’s playing right now.” Hammond could have been a useful piece for the Panthers, whose ranks at running back have thinned in recent weeks. Daniel Carter, the team’s third-leading rusher behind quarterback Eli Holstein, is out for the season after suffering a grisly leg injury against Clemson, and there is limited experience elsewhere on the roster. True freshman Juelz Goff and junior Derrick Davis Jr. are the backups to Reid now that Hammond and Carter won’t be able to play this weekend. Hammond was declared ineligible on Aug. 30, roughly 24 hours before the Panthers opened the 2024 season against Kent State at Acrisure Stadium. He was Pitt’s leading rusher during the 2023 campaign and has accounted for just 45 total yards on 14 rushes and receptions during his limited action in 2024. The starting job that Hammond took over last season was claimed by Reid, the Western Carolina transfer who has become Pitt’s best playmaker this year. The 5-foot-9 and 175-pound Reid has rushed for 797 yards and four touchdowns and is currently the Panthers’ leading receiver with 47 catches for 564 yards and four more touchdowns. The transfer portal was a hot topic during Narduzzi’s weekly Monday press conference as he and the team look forward to the regular season finale against Boston College. Pitt won seven games in a row to open the season and climbed to as high as 18th in the AP poll and College Football Playoff rankings before dropping four straight contests in November. With the opening of the transfer portal and national signing day so close to the end of the season, players will have to make quick decisions about their futures. However, Narduzzi is working hard to keep his team focused on Boston College in the meantime. Players will make their decisions about where to play football next year when that time comes, but for now, Pitt has at least one more game to play before the portal begins to siphon pieces from rosters around the country. “That’s going to happen either way. You’re going to have to deal with the portal. Not really worried about it,” Narduzzi said. “I think our guys in here are pretty happy. The ones that aren’t — hey. But we feel pretty good about that.” DL gains one veteran, loses another There weren’t many positives to take away from Pitt’s 37-9 loss at Louisville last Saturday, but it did feature the return of a veteran defensive lineman who was thought to be out for the season. Sixth-year senior Nate Temple saw his first game action of the season after suffering a knee injury in preseason training camp. Temple had been slowly ramping up during practices over the latter half of the season. The reward for working hard to get “way ahead” of his scheduled recovery time, as Narduzzi put it, was 16 snaps on Saturday night and perhaps another year of eligibility. “He’s still rusty and raw, but that will come with time,” Narduzzi said. “It was good to have Nate back. He’s got a motor. He cares. And I love his attitude.” Still, Narduzzi had some bad news to share about one of his senior defensive linemen. Defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, a Pittsburgh native who transferred in from Youngstown State this offseason, hasn’t played since the season opener after suffering what Narduzzi called a “scary” back injury in practice the following week and won’t return this season. Johnson had been using a walker but is now able to move on his own. The program is looking into getting him a medical waiver and more eligibility, but Narduzzi can’t say for sure if that will be possible. “He’s getting better now, thank God. ... He’s back moving around pretty good,” Narduzzi said. “But my heart goes out to Anthony — just another one of those injuries. I don’t think he’s got another year left. We’ll still have to look at that.” While Johnson’s ailment isn’t new, it’s one part of a constantly growing injury report that Pitt has dealt with during the second half of the season.
The Group General Manager, Continental Hotels, Karl Hala and General Manager, Lagos Continental, Christoph Schleissing, recently unveiled projects already embarked on at the Lagos and Abuja hotels aimed at leaving enduring legacies and memories with guests and tourists, writes Charles Ajunwa As I walked into the Lagos Continental Hotel that Morning after the usually detailed security checks through a smaller door as maintenance work was ongoing at the main entrance, guests and tourists were already checking in and out seamlessly with their luggage well arranged on the ground floor lobby. Hala, who has lived in Nigeria for 16 years with his family, hit the ground running by unveiling the reason for the meeting. According to him, Lagos Continental Hotel and Abuja Continental both formerly Intercontinental and Sheraton respectively, epitomise the luxury and lifestyle hospitality in Nigeria. “Together we have 947 elegantly big-sized rooms and suites and they do offer you unparalleled comfort. You know when you come somewhere, you have a feeling, like you just mentioned, in Asmara, when you feel, ah, I have arrived! “That is Continental. So what they offer is this unique experience that reflects this rich culture and diversity of Nigeria. What else we have and which is extremely iconic are our convention, media and banquet facilities. Both hotels have 5,000 square metres of meeting space, and can accommodate up to 3,500 delegates. Important to note, both are top state-of-the-art, both are pillarless, both have been refurbished recently, both are the centre for best conferencing in Nigeria, whether it’s the government enhancement delegation conference, whether it’s corporate gatherings, weddings or board meetings. So we provide all of that. It’s flexible, versatile and it’s covered by the best teams in the country. “To further support this, we just opened the Ladi Kwali Sports Village in Abuja. And that is a place which features sports facilities from tennis courts, volleyball, squash and table tennis. And a brand new gym which just opened last month (November).together with the gym in Lagos, which will enhance both of them, absolute top of fitness anything you wish within the technology. “So this Ladi Kwali building the sports facilities we added two paddle and two pickleball courts. So, when I was first told paddle built I said of course. So I went back and googled paddle. Paddle is the fastest growing sport in Africa and in Europe. But it has existed since the 60s in the US. “So are pickles. Now you can see it coming all over. So we have that in our premises in Abuja. So that serves as a hub for team-bonding and the togetherness and brainstorming for smaller groups, bigger groups. You want to have your visions for the next three years to come. “You work this and you can build in addition fun exercises. You can have this creativity and fun together. But you do the brainstorming sessions. You come up and challenge your mindset by being fit. “So it’s physical health and health creates future success for your team and for your company. That really has fostered teamwork and collaboration amongst all bodies. Whether it’s the big companies, whether it’s Oriflame or the MVCs or governmental bodies or the UNs, whoever it is, this is the way forward. And we are triggering this success through and through this new Ladi Kwali Village. And then we have a very impressive selection of culinary options in both hotels across 12 restaurants and bars. “We offer the finest Nigerian and international kitchen. And now the challenge. Michelin star. Michelin star is the pinnacle of acknowledgement being the best in the restaurant business. Do you know how many Michelin star restaurants there are in Africa? All over the world, they are in their thousands, but not in Africa. All over the world they are. In their thousands, but not in Africa. So I looked around and there are between LA, London and Dubai eight Nigerian restaurants. And one of them got a Michelin star. It’s Adejoke Bakare, the first black lady in the UK to be awarded. The restaurant is called Chisuru. Challenge through the media, the Mishla guide. Africa, we are here. If you take the story, this is an interesting ending, it has to do with Yam, yeah? So the ancient lore of the humble Nigerian Yam in all different variations. And we have it all over. We created. Now, if we can have success in LA, in Dubai, and in London, therefore, why not here. Shall we take it up together? We help, we push.’ Talking about the festive season which he described as “festive wonderland, festive continental,” adding, “We are to celebrate. It’s a very joyous season. And I must say, I’ve come to Nigeria for the last 16 years, and it has become very joyous. Decorations are there, events are there, you feel more mellow. Hala, who acknowledged the two hotels in Abuja and Lagos are finishing on a strong note economically in the last five months, said Abuja of course celebrates as well from gingerbread houses to amazing landscaping. “So when you come into Abuja because of the 14 hectares, it is a festive Christmas land you’re going to be overwhelmed with. When you come through, you will celebrate between the Christmas Eve’s because here one celebrates on the 25th at lunch, correct? So where we come from, 24th in the evening, so we celebrate both of those. “So they have wine pairings in the evenings, lavish Christmas, Santa lunches on the 25th, and then get ready for the crossovers on the 31st, where it will be between the restaurants and the pool bar. And the swimming pool has just been reopened. Brand new dialing, decking, whatsoever. Again, another brand new feature for us in Abuja. “And then they have very exclusive staycation packages. Makes families welcome to bring their family along and enjoy the sports village, the culinaries, the swimming pool, or just a walk, I want to say in the park, but it is like a park actually. We have a coconut garden, we have a lot of greens and all this around. This is the difference between Abuja and Lagos, the tranquility of Abuja. Greens, the hills, mountains around. It’s an amazing picture. I love both. “We also have Santa surprises for the children, workshops, cooking, everything around Abuja will offer. So similar to Lagos Abuja, just come, see and enjoy and relax. It’s the place to be for families this Christmas and then the crossover of course will be sensational. Not just fireworks, the fireworks will be on a culinary level with the entertainers, the singing, the dancing. And then we put a bit of light into the air, crossover. “For the next event, March, April, before Easter, we want to talk a little bit about academies, development, and how to bring the best skill set out of our teams. Don’t forget, indirectly and directly with Continental Hotels, we have over 1,700 colleagues. So we do have a platform we want to work with and we want to develop. Because the striving talent in Nigeria is always exciting. There is an eagerness to learn, to see, to perform. Now we want to make sure we realise it to the best with all the platforms which we can offer. It means the engagement with our employees comes to the best and up to the strengthening of the leadership. But we’ll discuss this in much more detail with much more exciting news like our own Academy just before Easter. “Yes, come and see us, come and enjoy, because with Continental Hotels, we are moving forward. We are staying agile. We will continue to innovate responsibly. And we will maintain and continue a relentless focus delivering memorable, bespoke experiences that define the Continental experience of luxury for the business.” The General Manager, Lagos Continental Hotel, Schleissing who arrived Lagos in August, from Kazakhstan in Central Asia, threw more light on the activities lined up for the festive period. “We are very much on the festive season and I think you all arrived to the lobby. You saw that we made a very nice, very festive decoration in the lobby. The goal was really to build a winter wonderland. We have a real Christmas boutique. We sell specialties all over the world. Some of them, we brought them directly from Germany or Italy or the UK. And many of them, we produce in-house. So it’s real, I think it’s a must to pass by the Boutique Alhambra. On the other hand, we go on.” On what he finds interesting about Nigeria, he said “First, is the climate and secondly, for me, most important are the people. When I look here at our people and our team, this genuine hospitality, very welcoming, we all speak the same language, makes my task to deliver exceptional hospitality, you know, easier.”Georgia turns to backup Stockton to face Notre Dame

People In USA Left Amazed When They're Calling 1-800-242-8478. Here's WhyPHILADELPHIA — Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said he was “shocked” by President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of anti-vaccine activist and former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to run the Department of Health and Human Services. Calling Kennedy an “agent of chaos in the vaccination world,” Offit asserted that under Kennedy, a vaccine denier , “children could suffer that chaos.” Trump announced Kennedy’s selection last week. The move follows Kennedy’s decision in August to endorse Trump and withdraw his own independent candidacy in key states, including Pennsylvania. “I’m going to let him go wild on health,” Trump said of Kennedy at an October rally in New York. “I’m going to let him go wild on food. I’m going to let him go wild on medicines.” For years, Kennedy, a conspiracy theorist, has said that vaccines cause autism , a falsehood that has been disproven multiple times by dozens of scientists around the world. “RFK Jr. is a dangerous man,” Offit said. “This decision is completely and utterly depressing.” Offit and Kennedy connected 20 years ago when Kennedy called to ask whether thimerosal , a compound safely used as a preservative in vaccines, caused cancer. “I assured him it was untrue — that it had been removed from all vaccines by 2001,” said Offit, coinventor of the rotavirus vaccine, which attacks the virus that can lead to fatal diarrhea in children. But Kennedy disregarded Offit’s expertise, and has been blaming vaccines for autism ever since. “RFK Jr. has become a science denialist,” Offit said. “If you present him with science, he’ll ignore it if it goes against a bias he has.” Kennedy’s team did not comment after receiving a list of questions, as well as Offit’s statements. As head of HHS, Kennedy wouldn’t have direct authority to ban vaccines, according to reporting by The Hill . But Offit and others say he’ll stay have powerful influence over the agencies that regulate vaccines, with the authority to reduce funding, or remove protections vaccine makers usually have. Kennedy has promised to “ Make America Healthy Again ,” imitating Trump’s slogan. Aside from his pledge to “expose the flaws in vaccine science,” Kennedy said he’d battle chronic disease in America by “breaking the stranglehold of the processed food lobby,” and working to “clear out corruption” at America’s health agencies, which could involve eliminating entire departments. Kennedy has also proposed combating the chronic disease epidemic by addressing the root causes such as poor diet, environmental toxins, and inadequate healthcare. He’s also called to reduce harmful chemicals and toxins from America’s food, water, and air. In October, Kennedy said in a post on the social platform X the he won’t “take anyone’s vaccines away from them. I just want to be sure every American knows the safety profile, the risk profile, and the efficacy of each vaccine. That’s it.” Offit doesn’t find reassurance in this promise, arguing that Kennedy’s selection will help amplify anti-vaccine rhetoric. “Just the mere fact he’s being considered for this job will validate some parents’ fears about vaccinations. Even now in kindergarten, measles and whooping cough vaccines are being refused by parents in some cases.” Kennedy has spread other health misinformation , saying: the use of vaccinations is akin to the Holocaust ; the coronavirus vaccine is the “ deadliest” created by man; drinking water can change children’s gender identity ; fluoride in water can lower IQ ; the coronavirus was “ethnically targeted” to prevent Jews and Chinese people from succumbing to COVID-19; WiFi causes cancer; drinking raw milk, which can contain E. coli and listeria, should be encouraged ; and antidepressants are to blame for school shootings. Kennedy will sometimes further confuse people by denying saying things he has. For example, he recently said he’s “never been anti-vaccine,” and that “no vaccine” is safe and effective. But last November, FactCheck.org , part of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, said that’s incorrect . The nonprofit discovered a Lex Fridman podcast Kennedy had done in July 2023 in which he said, “There’s no vaccine that is, you know, safe and effective.” Offit said he can’t understand Kennedy’s nomination. “Why would you put this person in charge of agencies based on science? He makes things up. He’s just a liar.” ©2024 The Philadelphia Inquirer, LLC. Visit at inquirer.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
