LeBron James is going to have to make room for the NFL. Wednesday's doubleheader on Netflix set records as the most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history, with numbers nearly five times more than the NBA. The Baltimore Ravens' 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans averaged 24.3 million while Kansas City's 29-10 win at Pittsburgh averaged 24.1 according to early viewer figures released by Nielsen on Thursday. Nielsen also said there were 65 million U.S. viewers who tuned in for at least one minute of one of the two games. The NBA's five-game slate averaged about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, according to the league and Nielsen. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” While the NBA's Christmas lineup has its best viewer numbers in five years, the NFL has made Christmas one of its tentpole events during the regular season, joining Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving. “The numbers speak for themselves and LeBron can have his own view, and I’m sure more people will look at that because of this," said Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media. "But, you know, we’re focused on the NFL and we’re thrilled with the results this year with the Christmas on Netflix and we’re excited to continue to build that over the next couple of years.” Both NFL games surpassed the previous mark of 23 million for last season’s AFC wild-card game between the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs on Peacock. Viewership for Ravens-Texans peaked with the Beyoncé Bowl. The 20-minute halftime performance averaged over 27 million viewers. The viewer figures include the audience on Netflix, mobile viewership on NFL+ and those who tuned in on CBS stations in Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore and Houston. Global ratings and final U.S. numbers are expected to be available on Tuesday. The NFL's Christmas numbers decreased from last season, but not at the rate that usually happens when something goes from broadcast to streaming. Last year’s three games averaged 28.68 million viewers. The early afternoon contest between the Las Vegas Raiders and Chiefs led the way, averaging 29.48 million on CBS. Once global and Netflix's first-party data is released, both Christmas games should surpass 30 million. The NBA's lineup saw an 84% rise over 2023. One reason for the increase is that all five games were on ABC, compared to two last year. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record. For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting. “Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. The swearing-in process ahead of legislative business beginning in January came a day after the final recount of a Nov. 5 election race concluded. Democrats, who have controlled the State House and governor’s office since 2018, saw their majorities narrow to a 76-73 advantage in the House, with two independents, and to a 20-15 edge in the Senate. The Legislature voted Wednesday for Attorney General Aaron Frey to continue in the role he has held since 2018, after Democrats nominated him by secret ballot Tuesday over challenger Maeghan Maloney, the district attorney for Kennebec and Somerset counties. Rep. Joe Perry, D-Bangor, will become the Maine state treasurer after beating House Majority Leader Mo Terry, D-Gorham. NEW YORK—The man accused of burning a woman to death inside a New York City subway train used a shirt to fan the flames, a prosecutor said Tuesday at his arraignment on murder charges. Sebastian Zapeta, 33, who federal immigration officials said is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the United States illegally, was not required to enter a plea and did not speak at the hearing in Brooklyn criminal court. Zapeta, wearing a white jumpsuit over a weathered black hooded sweatshirt, will remain jailed and is due back in court on Friday. His lawyer did not ask for bail. Zapeta is charged with two counts of murder, accusing him of intentionally killing the woman and killing her while committing arson. He is also charged with one count of arson. The top charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the attack a “gruesome and senseless act of violence” and said it would be “met with the most serious consequences.” The apparently random attack occurred Sunday morning on an F train that was stopped at the Coney Island station. The victim’s identification is still pending. Authorities say Zapeta approached the woman, who may have been sleeping in the train, and set her clothing on fire with a lighter. Zapeta then fanned the flames with a shirt, engulfing her in fire, Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg said in court Tuesday. Zapeta then sat on a bench on the subway platform and watched, Rottenberg said. According to Rottenberg, Zapeta told detectives that he didn’t know what happened but identified himself in images of the attack. Zapeta’s lawyer, Andrew Friedman, did not speak to reporters after the arraignment. Video on social media appears to show some people looking on from the platform and at least one police officer walking by while the woman is on fire inside the train. NYPD Transit Chief Joseph Gulotta said Sunday that several officers responded to the fire and one stayed to keep the crime scene “the way it’s supposed to be” while the others went to get fire extinguishers and transit workers. “Officers who were on patrol on an upper level of that station smelled and saw smoke and went to investigate. What they saw was a person standing inside the train car fully engulfed in flames,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. They eventually put the fire out, but “unfortunately, it was too late,” Tisch said, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Zapeta was taken into custody Sunday afternoon while riding a train on the same subway line after teenagers recognized him from images circulated by the police. A Brooklyn address for Zapeta released by police matches a shelter that provides housing and substance abuse support. The shelter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Federal immigration officials said Zapeta was deported in 2018 but later reentered the United States illegally. Overall, crime is down in the transit system compared to last year. Major felonies declined 6 percent between January and November compared to the same time period last year, according to data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. But murders are up, with nine killings this year through November compared to five during the same period last year. Tennessee 32, Houston 27An Amsterdam district court convicted five men on Tuesday for their role in last month’s “antisemitic hit-and-run squads” following a football match. The men were found guilty of a slew of crimes including kicking Maccabi Tel Aviv fans in the street to inciting violence in chat groups, according to AFP. The harshest sentence was six months in prison for a man identified as Sefa O. who played a “leading role” in the public violence against multiple individuals. Following the football match on November 8 between Tel Aviv and Amsterdam’s Ajax, chaos unfolded on the streets as hordes of men shrouded in black hoodies targeted the supporters of the Israeli team. Dutch authorities arrested 62 people following the attacks, in which at least five people were hospitalised and up to 30 suffered from minor injuries. Reports also emerged of people being thrown into canals and rammed with cars. Court images showed O. kicking a person on the ground, chasing people and punching them in the head and the body in beatings which the prosecutor said had ”little to do with football”. The prosecutor also said there was “no evidence” of “terrorist intent”, adding the violence was not motivated by antisemitism, rather, by the “situation in Gaza”. A second defendant, Umutcan A., 24, received a one month sentence for assault and for tearing a Maccabi scarf from a fan. Another man was also jailed for one month, another for two-and-a-half months and the fifth was given 100 hours of community service. A sixth defendant, born in Gaza, who is facing an attempted murder charge, had his case postponed pending psychiatric assessment. The judge said the convicted individuals would normally serve community service, but considering the “seriousness” of the offences and the context in which they were committed, “only imprisonment is appropriate”. Another six suspects are set to appear in court at a later date. Three of them are minors. The violence was described by Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema as “hit and run attacks”, while Dutch prime minister Dick Schoof condemned the “antisemitic violence against Israelis”.
