US President-elect Donald Trump filed a brief Friday urging the Supreme Court to pause a law that would ban TikTok the day before his January 20 inauguration if it is not sold by its Chinese owner ByteDance. "In light of the novelty and difficulty of this case, the court should consider staying the statutory deadline to grant more breathing space to address these issues," Trump's legal team wrote, to give him "the opportunity to pursue a political resolution." Trump was fiercely opposed to TikTok during his 2017-21 first term, and tried in vain to ban the video app on national security grounds. The Republican voiced concerns -- echoed by political rivals -- that the Chinese government might tap into US TikTok users' data or manipulate what they see on the platform. US officials had also voiced alarm over the popularity of the video-sharing app with young people, alleging that its parent company is subservient to Beijing and that the app is used to spread propaganda, claims denied by the company and the Chinese government. Trump called for a US company to buy TikTok, with the government sharing in the sale price, and his successor Joe Biden went one stage further -- signing a law to ban the app for the same reasons. Trump has now, however, reversed course. "Now (that) I'm thinking about it, I'm for TikTok, because you need competition," he recently told Bloomberg. "If you don't have TikTok, you have Facebook and Instagram -- and that's, you know, that's Zuckerberg." Facebook, founded by Mark Zuckerberg and part of his Meta tech empire, was among the social media networks that banned Trump after attacks by his supporters on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The ban was driven by concerns that he would use the platform to promote more violence. Those bans on major social media platforms were later lifted. In the brief filed on Friday, Trump's lawyer made it clear the president-elect did not take a position on the legal merits of the current case. "President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute," John Sauer wrote in the amicus curiae -- or "friend of the court" -- brief. "Instead, he respectfully requests that the court consider staying the act's deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case, thus permitting President Trump's incoming Administration the opportunity to pursue a political resolution of the questions at issue in the case." ft/ahaPolice searching for man who allegedly groped 5-year-old near New York migrant shelter

Jamiya Neal finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four blocks to lead host Creighton over UNLV 83-65 on Saturday in Omaha, Neb. Creighton was without star Pop Isaacs, who was ruled out for the season on Saturday morning after undergoing surprise hip surgery. It was a startling turn, considering Isaacs led Creighton with 27 points in Wednesday's win over No. 1 Kansas. Neal and Steven Ashworth (17 points) anchored the backcourt in Isaacs' absence, combining to make 13-of-20 shots from the field. Neal made 7 of his 10 and Ashworth 6 of 10. Isaac Traudt also stepped up, making five 3-pointers off the bench to account for all 15 of his points. Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 12 points, making 4-of-5 attempts from the field, and added six rebounds. Creighton opened the second half on a 10-0 run, extending its lead to 49-27 before UNLV mustered an answer. Creighton made 10 consecutive shots early in the second half, extending its lead to a 62-41 with 12:20 remaining. Dedan Thomas Jr. paced UNLV with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, making 1 of 4 attempts from 3-point range. Jailen Bedford added a team-high 20 points for the Rebels on 8-of-15 shooting, scoring 17 points in the second half. Julian Rishwain added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, but UNLV's second leading scorer for the season, Jeremiah Cherry, was limited to just four points in 16 minutes after early foul trouble. Creighton shot a resounding 63.3 percent from the field for the game, including going 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. Creighton outscored UNLV 38-34 in the paint and outrebounded them 34-21. UNLV finished the game shooting 42.2 percent field, making 7-of-21 attempts from distance. --Field Level Media

Beyond Paradise's Humphrey and Martha had a very exciting house guest in this year's Christmas special . Much of the couple's journey up until this point has been consumed by their attempts to becomes parents, which involved trying to conceive naturally, before turning to IVF. But when that option proved to be unsuccessful, they eventually decided to explore fostering . They'd already had some practice with a young boy called Ryan, who was having some problems at home. But he has since returned to his mum, which means Humphrey and Martha were ready to open their home to Jaiden . The teenager, who arrived shortly before Christmas, was greeted by the pair, who were very excited, if nervous, to have him with them. But despite their warm welcome, he only removed his headphones to ask for the WiFi password, before placing them firmly back on his head. "He's a lovely kid," said Hannah the social worker. "He might just take a while to warm up." And she wasn't kidding. Read more: Beyond Paradise star Kris Marshall confirms next year's Christmas special is already done Beyond Paradise season 3 begins filming as old face returns to series Humphrey was needed at work the next day, but Martha had left the café in capable hands so that she could bond with Jaiden, or at least attempt to. Despite suggesting bowling and the cinema, all he wanted to do was stay in his room, prompting a frustrated and downbeat Martha to call the social worker for some advice. "Moving into a new placement is a very stressful time for these kids," said Hannah. "They didn't ask to be put into care, and because of that, they feel like they have no control." "So just leave him to do his own thing?" asked Martha. "You're doing exactly the right thing," she said. "It's baby steps until he gets to trust you. "For the first few days, they don't want to say anything that might get them into trouble or upset their carers in case they get sent somewhere else. Just trust your instinct." However, Martha was still struggling with being iced out, so she took Jaiden into work in an effort to coax him out of his shell. But that didn't work either, and a short time later, he disappeared, which sent Martha into a panic spiral as she sprinted all over town in an effort to find him. Thankfully, he hadn't gone far. Jaiden was parked on a bench down in the town, and as Martha approached, he appeared despondent. "You must think I’m really rude, sitting on my own all the time, always on my phone," he said. Martha assured him that she didn't, before encouraging him to open up to her and Humphrey. "You don't have to keep these things to yourself, you know," she said. "I know it must be difficult. We can talk about it, it might help a bit." And without forcing the issue further, Jaiden then felt able to confide in her about his younger brother Ben, who was living with another foster family due to them having different dads. It was a huge breakthrough considering he had barely spoken a word to her since his arrival. And now that she had that crucial insight, Martha felt able to ease off, leaving him to call his brother, which completely shifted his mood. "Piece of cake," said Martha when Humphrey enquired about the rest of their day. "What's the secret?” he quizzed. "Oh, I'm not sure there is one," she laughed. Trump trolls Canada after telling Trudeau it should be the 51st state... as onlooker reveals what they discussed at Mar-a-Lago dinner By NIKKI SCHWAB, CHIEF CAMPAIGN CORRESPONDENT FOR DAILYMAIL.COM IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Published: 23:43 GMT, 3 December 2024 | Updated: 23:43 GMT, 3 December 2024 e-mail 34 View comments President-elect Donald Trump publicly embraced his joke to make Canada the '51st state' Tuesday by posting a picture of himself standing next to a Canadian flag overlooking a mountain range captioning it, 'Oh Canada!' Fox News reported Monday night that Trump had floated to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during their Friday meeting that Canada become the '51st state' if the country couldn't afford the Republican's proposed 25 percent tariffs. Trudeau reportedly told Trump he cannot levy that large of an import tax on the U.S.'s northern neighbor because it would completely kill the Canadian economy. The president-elect then suggested to Trudeau that Canada become the 51st state, which caused the prime minister and others at the table to laugh nervously, Fox's sources said. On Tuesday, Dominic LeBlanc, a Canadian cabinet minister clarified that Trump's comment was a 'joke' and was taken that way at the dinner table, according to the Toronto Star . LeBlanc was on hand at the Florida dinner. When asked by reporters if Trump thought Canada was a joke LeBlanc replied, 'Not at all, not at all.' 'That was not the context at all,' he said. 'In a three-hour social evening at the president's residence in Florida on a long weekend of American Thanksgiving, the conversation was going to be lighthearted.' 'The president was telling jokes,' the cabinet minister continued. 'The president was teasing us. It was, of course, on that issue, in no way a serious comment we had.' The joke may be on Trump, with the Star pointing out that the mountain range in the Truth Social image is actually the Matterhorn in Switzerland. President-elect Donald Trump publicly embraced a joke he told to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - to make Canada the '51st state' if the country couldn't survive the Republican's proposed 25 percent tariffs. The mountains in the image are actually in Switzerland During Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Friday night Mar-a-Lago dinner with President-elect Donald Trump, Trump floated that Canada become the 51st state. Canadian cabinet minister Dominic LeBlanc (far left) assured reporters that it was a 'joke' Fox's sources said Trudeau nervously laughed when Trump initially made the '51st state' jest. Trump said that while prime minister is a better title, Trudeau could still be a governor. The sources said that someone at the table suggested Canada would be a really liberal state, which cued laughter. Trump then suggested that Canada could be divided into two states - a conservative and a liberal state. He then told Trudeau if he didn't stop people from flowing over the northern border, Canada could become one or two U.S. states, the sources said. While the exchange prompted laughs, sources also told Fox that Trump gave a serious message to Trudeau about immigration enforcement. Illegal crossing from Canada represent a much smaller number than the illegal foot traffic into the U.S. from Mexico - but Trump threatened both Canada and Mexico with 25 percent tariffs if actions weren't taken. In the same Truth Social post, he threatened an additional 10 percent in import taxes on China - due to the government not imposing a death penalty on drug dealers as was promised. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is photographed Saturday in his West Palm Beach hotel after making a surprise trip to Mar-a-Lago to see President-elect Donald Trump. Last Monday, Trump threatened a 25 percent import tax on Canadian goods over immigration Part of Trump's hardline policies are to stop the flow of the deadly Chinese-produced drug fentanyl into the United States. A Canadian Broadcasting Corporation report from last week found that the U.S. Border Patrol had intercepted more than 21,000 migrants crossing into the U.S. from Canada during the first 10 months of the year. In October alone, however, border agents apprehended more than 56,000 migrants coming over the southern border. A majority of the illegal crossings from Canada - around 18,000 for the first 10 months of the year - are via the so-called Swanton Sector, which has seen a dramatic rise in illegal crossings over the past two years. It's the area east of the Great Lakes in New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. Trump's incoming 'border czar,' Tom Homan, is from this region - and will no doubt pay it some attention - and it's part of Rep. Elise Stefanik's district. She's been a top Trump ally on Capitol Hill and is due to become is ambassador to the United Nations. After a rough start to the 2024-25 season, the Kings part ways with 2023 Coach Of The Year Mike Brown , ESPN reported. The Kings are currently 13-18 and have a four game losing streak. After being the 3rd seed in the Western Conference just two seasons ago, the Kings have failed to reach those heights again. Currently, Sacramento has the longest championship drought in the NBA at 73 years. They are likely to miss the playoffs again this year, and a championship looks very far away. What Is Going On In Sacramento? The Kings signed DeMar DeRozan in the offseason, looking to make a splash in the competitive Western Conference. Since then, the signing hasn’t looked as great as it sounded. DeRozan has had his worst season in years, only averaging 21 points and lower shooting splits. De’Aaron Fox has been involved in trade rumors recently, as he may want out from Sacramento. Fox was drafted there in 2017 and has only been involved in one playoff appearance. The All-Star has been the bright spot for the poor franchise, and his time there may be coming to an end. What To Expect Next Sacramento is likely to miss the playoffs again, and firing Brown is honestly a questionable move. He led them to their first playoff appearance since 2006 and genuinely shifted the culture in the city. The blame should be placed more on the front office than Brown, as they haven’t made significant moves to fight for a championship. They will likely select a new head coach in the next few hours, and Mike Brown will be looking for a new home. This move will give De’Aaron Fox more leeway to request a trade, as their relationship was close. The Kings will have to find some type of rhythm for the rest of the season to push for a playoff spot. This article first appeared on Hardwood Heroics and was syndicated with permission.
