Private Internet Access (PIA) is among the least expensive premium VPN services, costing only $79 for a 3-year plan. The VPN offers open-source apps with flexible settings to customize your security. Aside from the extensive server network, you can also connect unlimited devices (it's one of the best options for smart TVs). PIA's headquarters in the US isn't ideal for privacy, and the app's many settings can be hard for a beginner to get the hang of. Private Internet Access (PIA) is a cost-friendly and reliable VPN service. Its servers are in all the US states, making it appropriate for geo-restrictions. The app is highly customizable for different user scenarios, depending on whether you want the best security or speed. Also: The best VPNs: Expert tested There are even more praiseworthy things about PIA, which is also featured in our best VPNs list as the best open source VPN option. The VPN has some similarities with its rival IPVanish, for example, in supporting unlimited connections and being headquartered in the US (which isn't a good thing). However, its open-source apps and zero-logging policy add some level of trust. Private Internet Access Private Internet Access offers a great open-source VPN at a lower cost than many other services. An extensive global server network like no other PIA has over 25,000 servers, which is one of the largest networks any VPN offers. That also means it has many IP addresses to offer anywhere. The servers are spread in 91 countries and 140 locations worldwide. The cherry on top is you'll find servers to connect to in every US state. This comes in handy if you need to access IP-restricted services and content when traveling out of state. It's also easier to find a server with fast speeds in any location in the US. But PIA's server distribution is expansive, covering regions like South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. I was surprised to see servers in China and nearby territories like Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most VPNs do not offer servers in China due to the country's strict regulations. The servers in China are virtual, meaning they aren't physically stationed in the country but in a nearby location (and still offer a China IP address). PIA has these virtual servers in several other locations, including India and some US states. They work just like the regular servers and can be even faster. Some notable features of the servers that help to boost performance are: Speeds of up to 10Gbps. The servers are designed to handle connections up to 10Gbps, meaning they won't restrict bandwidth or speeds if you're subscribed to a fast internet service like Google Fiber or Xfinity. RAM-only technology. The servers do not store data on hard disks but instead use volatile RAM memory storage that is automatically wiped clean with every server reboot. This helps to improve user privacy because anyone who gains access to the servers won't find any information they can use to track you. Optimized for streaming. If accessing content with a VPN is your main intention, PIA has specialized servers that are convenient for streaming. What's more, you can get an IP address that is exclusive to you (instead of the shared ones). The IPs are offered only in select countries and will cost you a little extra on top of your subscription. This gives you the freedom to use the same IP on all your devices or the ability to access IP-sensitive services (like online banking) without getting flagged for suspicious activity. Firsthand performance experience with PIA While it's not the fastest VPN , PIA has excellent connections. With my baseline internet speed of 125Mbps, I would occasionally get nearly the same speeds while using the VPN. But save those details for next because I also experienced connection dips in many server locations. Using our VPN testing methodology , I measured PIA's impact on internet connections, taking readings speeds with and without the VPN. It's expected that internet speeds will be slower with a VPN (it happens with most, if not all, VPNs). The key reasons are that data has to be encrypted and decrypted on transit, and also the traffic routing between your location and the server location you've chosen. Starting with PIA servers closest to my location in South Africa, I had near perfect speeds; sometimes registering as small as 2% drop. I did the tests multiple times and averaged the readings during the day and evenings (to note any fluctuations during peak times). The VPN connections were faster on weekdays, with weekends registering slightly slower speeds (sometimes falling by as much as 15%). Here is a summary of how the nearby servers performed. The biggest resilience test was when I connected to international servers. I registered speed losses of up to 45%. My peak interest was on US connections since that's where I stream the most content and even play online games. I wasn't disappointed because some locations had less than 15% connection drops, although I got up to 26% drops in locations to the west. Here is an outlook of speed test results in select locations across different continents. I got slower connections in countries in Europe, South America, and Asian regions. Notably, UK and Sweden server connections dropped by over 20%. But the worst of all were Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. I encountered over 40% slower internet speeds, though my connections were still within the range that can support 4K streaming. I managed to access many streaming platforms with PIA. Netflix is usually one of the most sensitive at detecting blocking VPNs, but most of the Netflix libraries I tested worked with PIA, including Japan (which has the most anime shows). But as I mentioned earlier, there are streaming-optimized servers. I would highly recommend using these for incident-free streaming online. An easy way to sort them is by typing "streaming" in the search bar above the server list. This will display all available dedicated streaming servers in different locations. While testing the servers, I was able to use streaming sites such as; Hulu Disney+ BBC iPlayer YouTube TV Amazon Prime Video Max Also: The best VPNs for streaming: Expert tested All PIA servers support torrenting. To experience faster connections with torrenting, you should use the SOCKS5 proxy servers. They are optimized for speedy file-sharing but may be less secure because they don't encrypt traffic. Port forwarding is another convenient feature for torrenting. You can easily configure P2P clients like BitTorrent, qBittorrent, and uTorrent for safe and smooth downloads. PIA is reliable for intensive online gaming, too. When I chose nearby servers, latency was always below 150ms (the maximum threshold for most fast-paced games). Lower latency is best for gaming because it signifies a faster signal response between your device and the servers, which helps minimize lag in online gaming. The PIA app shows latency on all servers, so you can select the most efficient ones for gaming anywhere. Plus, the VPN's encryption and IP-masking features help to avoid ISP-speed throttling and DDoS attacks that can negatively impact your gaming experience. PIA has a lot of built-in options to customize your security and privacy PIA is one among few VPNs with the option to choose encryption levels. Encryption is the process by which data is scrambled and secured with safe keys so that no one besides the authorized recipient can read it while in transit. When I installed the PIA app on my Windows laptop, it was set to AES128-bit encryption by default. This is relatively less powerful than the advanced AES 256-bit encryption, but it can be faster than the latter. But if you want the best protection in risky environments (like unsecured Wi-Fi networks where hacks may be common), you should switch to AES 256-bit encryption. However, the option to change encryptions is only available if you're using the OpenVPN protocol. Three secure protocols are offered, though WireGuard and OpenVPN (UDP and TCP) are the ones available on most devices. PIA also offers IPSec/IKEv2 protocol on iOS, which is designed to work optimally on mobile devices. When using either WireGuard or OpenVPN protocols, there's an option to customize the data packets/MTU size for better connections. Choose "Small Packets" when on unreliable and slow internet connections to ensure only essential data is tunneled by the VPN, thus minimizing bandwidth usage. "Large Packets" can be used on fast connections because more data is transported simultaneously. Alternatively, you can leave the settings to "Auto" for the VPN to choose the best packet settings depending on your internet connection. Initially, I couldn't tell the difference between the two kill switch settings on the PIA app. Turns out that the first one (VPN Kill Switch) blocks access to the internet if the VPN connection drops accidentally. The other one (Advanced Kill Switch) stops your device from accessing the internet without VPN protection at all times, including when the app is turned off. Both of these settings help to prevent exposure of your IP address during connection failures. It's possible to automate how PIA should connect and secure your traffic on any network. You can set your trusted home networks, for example, to work even without VPN protection, while others are always secured. Split tunneling is another feature that helps customize your VPN connections. With this, you can opt to tunnel some apps on the VPN and leave out others. It can be useful when, for example, streaming international shows and using local services or apps concurrently. But that's not all. I found even more tools meant to boost user privacy, such as: You can use PIA's multihop servers instead of the regular servers. To turn these on, go to the menu and navigate to "Multihop," then check the box next to "Multihop and obfuscation." Multihop servers add an extra layer of anonymity by rerouting your VPN-encrypted traffic on other private proxy servers. It's almost impossible for anyone to find or track your real IP address when traffic keeps bouncing on different servers and you're constantly getting assigned a new IP. Multihop servers can be useful when torrenting, though they may be slower. Again, the multihop servers (with Shadowsocks) can obfuscate your VPN traffic so that sites blocking VPN traffic won't even detect that you're one. If you're having problems accessing geo-restricted sites, simply turn on this setting to camouflage the VPN traffic. PIA also provides leak protection by offering multiple ways to route DNS (domain name server) requests. You can use the VPN's DNS or customize it with your private DNS address. Both of these methods can greatly help deter third parties, including your internet service provider, from monitoring your online activities and searches. MACE is another great addition to PIA's arsenal. It detects and stops potentially harmful ads from domains known for distributing malware. So while you might still see ads while browsing, a lot of filtering has already been done to ensure only safe and appropriate ads are served. It also blocks trackers that might be used to secretly collect information via apps installed on your device. PIA has published its source code, including on Github, for anyone to inspect. This increases transparency because app users and developers can check for loopholes and vulnerabilities in the software. But the fact that PIA has survived public scrutiny means it's solid. Many VPNs, including NordVPN and ExpressVPN, haven't publicized their codes, preferring to keep it a secret. Sadly, the US (where PIA is based) isn't a privacy-friendly location for VPN providers. Like every other company, they're subject to data retention laws that require them to keep some of their customers' data for a period. Also, the US is a member of 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances, in which the participating members freely share intelligence, including information about their citizens. While all these are reasons to question PIA's ability to maintain user privacy, the provider has a zero-logging policy. It has made a commitment to not collect or store sensitive data from its customers. The policy has been audited by Deloitte Romania in an effort to verify its trustworthiness. PIA has also been subpoenaed, including by the FBI, to provide user logs as evidence in a court case, but nothing implicating was found (a sign that they mean what they say). The bottom line is that the provider is doing all it can to ensure no traces of your data can be found in its servers. However, the headquarters in the US remains a drawback, given that most VPN providers have chosen better locations to avoid issues. PIA's prices are among the most affordable in the market Though rich in features, PIA's plans are only a fraction of what some top services charge. The extended plans (1 and 3 years) have the best value proposals. If you go all in with the 3-year plan subscription (plus 3 months free), it costs $79 (an equivalent of $2.03/month) while the 1-year subscription is $39 ($3.33/month). The 1-month plan, however, isn't as enticing because it costs $11.95. Thankfully, all the subscriptions are backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to claim a refund if you aren't satisfied with the service. A free 500GB cloud storage offer also includes longer plans (1 and 3 years). However, it's only for one year and will be offered again the next time you renew your subscription. You can also bundle up your subscription with complementary services like an antivirus and a dedicated IP address, both costing you a little extra. PIA supports different modes of payment including bank cards, PayPal, and cryptocurrency. One subscription for all your devices (see the compatible devices and user experience) Another advantage of PIA is that you can connect all your devices with one account, joining only the likes of IPVanish and Surfshark in supporting unlimited simultaneous connections. It's a great option for multiple users like in a family or hostel shared with friends. Plus, you can use PIA on most, if not all, popular devices. It offers easy-to-install native apps, including a GUI (graphical user interface) app for Linux. That means you don't need to use command lines to switch servers or change settings on Linux. The VPN supports direct installs on various smart TVs, including Apple TV, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV. If your device doesn't allow direct VPN installation, for example, LG and Samsung TV, you can configure the IP address manually using PIA's smart DNS. This enables you to access geo-restricted content on your device, though without protection. Also, connecting your device to a Wi-Fi network or shared hotspot secured with PIA provides the full benefits of a VPN, including data encryption. The list of devices where you can use PIA include; Smartphones: Android and iOS PCs: Mac, Windows, Linux Smart TVs and media boxes (including Fire TV stick and Chromecast) Consoles: Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Playstation, MetaQuest, Amazon Luna Routers Chrome and Firefox browsers I easily set up the VPN on my Windows, Android, and iPad devices. However, navigating the app isn't as straightforward. Newbies, for example, may have problems locating the settings (click the 3 dots at the right top/left). Also, there are many settings on the app that might leave you clueless about what to do. However, the default settings are optimal so you don't need to change anything for the app to work properly (unless you know exactly what you're doing). Something I liked about the interface is how server locations are arranged on the app, starting from the best-performing ones with low latency. You can also favorite specific servers for easy access later. It's also possible to add or rearrange icons on the app by dragging and dropping the tools wherever you need them for convenience. ZDNET's buying advice Private Internet Access checks all the boxes of a good VPN service. It appeals to users with varying priorities, including security, privacy, bypassing geo-restrictions, or high bandwidth browsing. You're better off with the longer subscription plans because they provide more value for cheap, otherwise the monthly price range is within what other providers charge. The VPN is good for multi-connections, that is if you don't want to secure all your devices without an extra subscription. There are downsides too, but mostly not significant enough to hinder the proper functioning of the software. Private Internet Access FAQs The antivirus PIA offers can significantly boost your device's security. It's worth it given the low price and the range of functions it can perform, including scanning your computer for malware and isolating malicious and risky files. The antivirus can also detect missing patches and fixes that could expose your Windows system to cyberattacks. However, the antivirus may not be as robust as a standalone antivirus software. If you need full PC and phone protection from offline threats, you should find the best antivirus software to do the job. PIA MACE ad-blocker isn't effective at blocking ads on YouTube. It's primarily designed to block ads from domains or websites using aggressive advertising tactics, like aggressive tracking or showing adulterated ads. I still encountered ads on YouTube even with the MACE feature turned on, including infeed and in-video ads. You should get an ad-blocker specifically tailored for YouTube ads if you don't want to see ads while using the platform. If PIA is not working, you can try several things. Start with the very basic ones, like checking the internet connection, updating the app, and ascertaining that it's not a firewall (like antivirus or Microsoft Defender) that's blocking the software. Also, try connecting to a different server because specific servers might be experiencing downtime issues. VPNs, including PIA, may also not work properly in some countries, like Russia and China. Using servers in a nearby location can sometimes fix the problem. If you're in a region that restricts VPN use, it's recommended that you turn on the PIA app's Multihop and Shadowsocks features. Another thing you can try is switching to a different protocol (WireGuard or OpenVPN, depending on which one you're currently using). If changing the settings doesn't produce any results, try reinstalling the app. If all else fails, contact customer support for assistance. You can install PIA on Linux distros such as Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Fedora, and Arch. The VPN offers a native app for Linux that allows you to instantly connect to servers without any complications. You can also do a manual Linux setup, including via command line terminal and using a network manager app. Why I pick this ultraportable Lenovo tablet over the iPad Air for multimedia consumption I tested the new Kindle Scribe for two weeks, and it beat my ReMarkable in several ways One of the best QLED TVs I've tested isn't made by Samsung or Hisense These Beyerdynamic earbuds delivered glorious sound for any kind of music I playedWASHINGTON D.C., DC — President-elect Donald Trump on Friday nominated Dr. Marty Makary to lead the Food and Drug Administration , selecting a surgeon and author who gained national attention for opposing vaccine mandates and some other public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic . Makary, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, is the latest in a string of Trump nominees who have declared the U.S. health system “broken," vowing a shakeup. As part of a flurry of nominations late Friday night, Trump also tapped doctor and former Republican Rep. Dave Weldon of Florida to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fox News contributor Janette Nesheiwat, meanwhile, is set to be the nation's next surgeon general. Some of Makary's views align closely with the man who is poised to be his boss — prominent environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine organizer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Trump put forward as the next U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary. In books and articles, Makary has decried the overprescribing of drugs, the use of pesticides on foods and the undue influence of pharmaceutical and insurance companies over doctors and government regulators, points that Kennedy has also harped on for years. Trump said Makary, trained as a surgeon and cancer specialist, “will restore FDA to the gold standard of scientific research, and cut the bureaucratic red tape at the agency to make sure Americans get the medical cures and treatments they deserve.” Headquartered in the Maryland suburbs outside Washington, the 18,000 employees of the FDA are responsible for the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs , vaccines and medical devices as well as a swath of other consumer goods, including food , cosmetics and vaping products . Altogether those products represent an estimated 20% of U.S. consumer spending annually, or $2.6 trillion. Makary gained prominence on Fox News and other conservative outlets for his contrarian views during the COVID-19 pandemic. He questioned the need for masking and, though not opposed to the COVID-19 vaccine, had concerns about booster vaccinations in young children. He was part of a vocal group of physicians calling for greater emphasis on herd immunity to stop the virus, or the idea that mass infections would quickly lead to population-level protection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that COVID-19 vaccinations prevented more than 686,000 U.S. deaths in 2020 and 2021 alone. While children faced much lower rates of hospitalization and death from the virus, medical societies including the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that vaccinations significantly reduced severe disease in the age group. Makary has lamented how drugmakers used misleading data to urge doctors to prescribe OxyContin and other opioids as low-risk, non-addictive pain relievers. That marketing was permitted under FDA-approved labeling from the 1990s, suggesting the drugs were safe for common ailments like back pain. In more recent years, the FDA has come under fire for approving drugs for Alzheimer's , ALS and other conditions based on incomplete data that failed to show meaningful benefits for patients. A push toward greater scrutiny of drug safety and effectiveness would be a major reversal at FDA, which for decades has focused on speedier drug approvals . That trend has been fueled by industry lobbying and fees paid by drugmakers to help the FDA hire additional reviewers. Kennedy has proposed ending those payments, which would require billions in new funding from the federal budget. Other administration priorities would likely run into similar roadblocks. For instance, Kennedy wants to bar drugmakers from advertising on TV , a multibillion-dollar market that supports many TV and cable networks. The Supreme Court and other conservative judges would likely overturn such a ban on First Amendment grounds that protect commercial speech, experts note. Less is known about Trump's pick for the Atlanta-based CDC, which develops vaccines and monitors for infectious disease outbreaks. Weldon is a staunch, self-described “pro-life” Republican. Legislation he introduced more than 20 years ago outlawed human cloning. He also brokered a deal with lawmakers to bar patents on human organisms, including genetically engineered embryos. Weldon also advocated against the removal of the feeding tube for Terri Schiavo, a Florida woman whose family battle over her vegetative state turned into a national debate. Weldon's nomination is likely to placate some anti-abortion advocates, who have been concerned about Trump's nomination of Kennedy, a longtime Democrat and proponent of abortion rights, as the nation's top health official. Weldon retired from his congressional seat in 2008, after 14 years in public office. Earlier this year, he lost in a GOP primary for a seat in the Florida Legislature. If he's confirmed, he'll be in charge of more than 13,000 employees and nearly 13,000 other contract workers. Nesheiwat, meanwhile, will oversee 6,000 U.S. Public Health Service Corps members if the Republican-controlled Senate approves her nomination as the surgeon general. She is a medical director for an urgent care company in New York. She appears regularly on Fox News and has expressed frequent support for Trump, sharing photos of them together on her social media pages. Surgeons general also have the power to issue advisories, warning of public health threats in the U.S. Those advisories can influence how the government, public and medical community respond to health crises in the country. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group. I couldn't stop myself from giggling. A sudsy giggle. I was brushing my teeth, but this was no ordinary toothbrush I was using. It was the Feno Smartbrush — and with its 18,000 bristles, it was navigating all of my teeth, top and bottom, at the same time. The vibration was startlingly different. The entire lower part of my face was shaking, from my gumline to the base of my jaw. It felt like a massage for my teeth, cheeks and the craniofacial muscles surrounding my mouth. Foamy residue escaped onto my chin and chest. The Feno Smartbrush is a mouthful. It was a mouthful. In a good way. For an anxious, teeth-grinding adult like me, the silly visual in the mirror of my mouth vibrating for 20 seconds was worth the feeling that came along with it. Plus, it removed all those tricky goji berry remnants that always seem to evade my regular electric toothbrush. The Smartbrush is a U-shaped device, with top and bottom sections like the mouthguards that athletes use, attached to a fist-sized handle that holds the power source and a camera. It's the flagship product of Feno, a 3-year-old company driven by the belief that "transformative oral health technology" is on the cusp of a breakthrough moment. It was created by Dr. Kenny Brown, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who's also Feno's CEO and a co-founder. He designed it to address problems he saw firsthand with his patients. "We believe oral health is your overall health," Brown tells me when we meet at BioscienceLA , which for Feno doubles as a nonprofit organization for health tech companies and its brick-and-mortar. "When it comes to oral hygiene, patients tend to fail in two aspects: time and technique." How many of us really put in the 2-plus minutes of brushing that dentists recommend? And are we really putting brush to tooth as effectively as we should? Feno cuts the time to just 20 seconds, and its Smartbrush does the work for you. It's a radically different approach from the normal options available for oral care at home, and retails at a breathtaking $299 for a three-month starter kit. There are other high-end, high-tech devices, including Curaprox's U-shaped Samba robotic toothbrush and the Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 , which packs some AI into a more standard-looking electric toothbrush. But neither of those devices has Feno's customization features, like six variations of its U-shaped, top-and-bottom mouthpiece. Feno also stands apart in tracking and analyzing your brushing habits and your mouth as a whole, with reports through a $10 monthly Feno Plus membership intended to support long-term preventive care. Brown's training and experience is another differentiating factor. What you get with the Feno Smartbrush I did my trial with the $299 Founder's Edition bundle , which contains the Smartbrush (comprising the Feno Smarthandle and SnapCharger), a TrueFit Mouthpiece, three tubes of mint-flavored XyFoam toothpaste, a tongue scraper and three months of Feno Plus for access to personalized health insights and virtual oral health coaching. First, I sent in selfies of my mouth through Feno's FitKit , an app that allows the Feno team to map, size and pair it with one of six mouthpieces, and waited for my images to be analyzed and approved. The kit arrived in the mail a week later, in a large, well-designed box. After the unboxing, I downloaded the Feno app and connected it to my newly charged Smartbrush. (The Apple MagSafe-like charger attaches to the back of Feno's Smarthandle, looking rather like a stethoscope.) Here, I was able to customize my Feno experience. I could change the speed and time of the brush while the AI tracked my brushing cadence. The vibration of the brush allowed me to maneuver it around the sides of my mouth, which provided a pleasant jaw massage in the process. You use the Smarthandle to take a scan of your mouth. Over the next two weeks, I used the Smartbrush twice a day for 20 seconds at a time. Once connected to Feno's Wi-Fi network (this will not affect your home's internet connection), I could also connect my Smartbrush to Feno's app, which monitored my brushing and scanning cadence. After brushing, I positioned the Smartbrush 10 inches from my face and pressed a button to capture and send data concerning my oral health to Feno's team for feedback. With regular use, the reports come back every two weeks with insights about the condition of your teeth, gums, tongue and soft tissue, plus a digital health score, summary analysis of your mouth and feedback to improve or adjust your mouth scans. With consistency, the embedded scanner will learn your mouth and note any changes that occur. "[Over time] you're going to have the biggest longitudinal data set on the mouth, actionable data made as effortless as possible, so that it can be done as easily as once a day," Brown said. "You can then get insight into what's happening in your mouth." Feno will send you regular reports on the state of your oral health. Feno's evolution After my trial run with the Smartbrush, I visited Feno's facilities, where the product is tested, packaged and shipped out, to speak with Brown about the device, its AI integration and the state of oral health care. Feno's prototyping space, fulfillment center and company office all sit within the health tech hub's long, single-story brick exterior; blue and green letters read "BioscienceLA" across its windows. Inside, shiny white plaster walls and squeaky-clean floors make up the building's sleek, modern interior. Dr. Kenny Brown is the creator of the Feno Smartbrush. This is where members of the equally passionate core team — eight people, including three dentists — can be found. (It's also where Brown can be found chatting on the phone with customers about postpurchase feedback.) Our conversation took place in Feno's prototyping office, the largest of the three spaces I toured. Nearby, 3D printers for prototyping emit a soothing hum and ambient orange glow. Physical evolutions of Feno's TrueFit Mouthpiece lie to my right. As an oral surgeon and entrepreneur, Brown is an anomaly, a Black oral surgeon in an industry where just under 4% of dentists, dental specialists and oral surgeons are Black. With his creation of the AI-powered Smartbrush, he's also a pioneer. He radiates a passion for oral care — and humanity. (We'll take a moment here to acknowledge another pioneer, Dr. Bobbi Peterson , the Shark Tank-famous orthodontist who invented the Big Mouth electric toothbrush.) Brown estimates that nearly 50% of American adults have some form of gum disease and chronic inflammation. Feno, he says, could address this challenge with "full mouth," U-shaped products. "The idea is better, faster, easier — but it also levels a playing field," Brown said. "Doing this on a technology front shows, 'Look, these solutions are for everyone.' At the end of the day, it's to serve others." The TrueFit Mouthpiece design The TrueFit Mouthpiece began with over 20,000 patient digital impressions to inform a mouth-sizing algorithm, which translated into over 100,000 designs of various shapes, widths, heights and bristle configurations. "It can be extremely risky and expensive to make thousands of prototypes. We used a combination of clinical knowledge, digital impressions, generative AI technology and 3D printing to help us create [ours]," Brown said. "Efficacy is the number one thing. If it doesn't work, it doesn't matter." The design of Feno's mouthpiece went through many iterations. Brown and his team used generative AI — custom algorithms written with design software Rhino 3D and Grasshopper — to test and optimize for the most effective mouthpiece, including features like "bristle contact with tooth surfaces and your gum line." Those iterations became several hundred 3D-printed prototypes, tested again on patients to ensure clinical standards. Today, Feno has six TrueFit Mouthpiece variations that differentiate in dental arch, jawline and oral cavity dimensions, depending on customers' needs. Whether that's arch width or depth, a crooked tooth or gum recession, the goal is that all 18,000 bristles on your Feno TrueFit Mouthpiece touch all of your teeth — 250 strokes per tooth — so you can brush your teeth within 20 seconds. The Smarthandle will pause and alert you to soften your brushing pressure if need be. The TrueFit Mouthpiece connects to Feno's Smarthandle, which uses camera vision, artificial intelligence that can analyze visual data. Each time you scan your mouth with the Smarthandle's embedded scanner, it tracks signs of poor oral health or abnormalities that need attention and compiles it into a data report. While these insights are not considered diagnostic, Feno has a dentist quality-checking information for precision and accuracy. "We really try to be intentional about what we're giving customers," Brown said. "Seeing people and meeting them where they're at is the best form of care, something you cannot capture with any tech. That's humanity." My experience with the Feno Smartbrush For me, in that two-week trial run, the Smartbrush worked. My gums were initially sore (Feno notes this might happen) but my teeth felt... purified, as if all 18,000 bristles, vibrating in various directions, had extracted all the plaque in my mouth. As new to the market as Feno is, there's a lot yet to unfold about how well the Smartbrush performs and what the oral analytics reveal over time. At $299 upfront plus $10 a month, this system is asking you to make a significant investment. Still, I'm intrigued by this innovative approach. After my trial, I decided to keep my Smartbrush. For the last three years, I've been told by two different dentists that I will need veneers before I'm 40. (An alarming statement for a 29-year-old who's had braces twice.) Every six months, I leave my checkup increasingly anxious about what's happening inside my mouth — or, to Brown's point, my body — with no solution or long-term plan. Maybe this is the start of one. As always, as a savvy consumer, you should do your research, talk to your dentist and consider your comfort level with spending on a pricey cutting-edge device. Alongside brushing your teeth, twice a day.

The Trump and Biden teams insist they're working hand in glove on foreign crises
BOULDER, Colo. — A 72-year-old lifelong Colorado fan with end-stage kidney failure waited to the side of the field in his wheelchair for Travis Hunter and the rest of the Buffaloes. One by one, players strolled over and signed a football for Riley Rhoades, his face lighting up with each signature. Standing close by and taking in the scene was Jeremy Bloom. He's become a wish facilitator for older adults. Bloom, the former Colorado wide receiver and Olympic freestyle skier, started the Wish of a Lifetime foundation in 2008, which has made thousands of aspirations turn into reality for older adults. The list of granted wishes range from taking veterans back to the beaches of Normandy to helping late-in-life authors publish a book. He's staged concerts for musicians, assisted some in daredevil feats such as jumping out of an airplane and even lined up a meeting between an Olympic medalist and former President Barack Obama. For Rhoades, his wish was simply to return to Folsom Field again, the place where he used to have season tickets but hasn't attended a game since 2004. "Everybody has somebody in their life —a grandparent, friend, neighbor — at that age where you wish you had more resources to help," said Bloom, whose college career was cut short two decades ago when the NCAA denied his reinstatement to play football and still ski professionally after receiving endorsement money to fuel his Olympic dreams. "Nothing can compare to seeing someone else's eyes light up because you helped make their dream come true." Granting wishes The foundation is a tribute to his grandparents. But the concept began to take root when he was a teenager. He was in Japan for a World Cup freestyle skiing competition when a woman tried to hop on a crowded bus. There was no room, but everyone in front rose from their seats to make space. That stuck with him, along with seeing these acts of kindness for older adults all over Europe and Asia as he traveled. An idea formed — bring that same level of appreciation to the United States, with a wish-granting element. Bloom's organization has been a charitable affiliate of AARP since 2020. Special moment It was the yearning of Rhoades that brought the two of them to Folsom Field last weekend. Rhoades, who had season tickets at Colorado for 27 years, wanted to see the Buffaloes in person after watching the team's resurgence on television. A few years ago, Rhoades, who was born with spina bifida, was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. Being among the 54,646 fans Saturday stirred up plenty of emotions for Rhoades, as he watched the 16th-ranked Buffaloes (8-2, 6-1 Big 12, No. 16 CFP) beat Utah. Colorado remains in the race for not only a conference title but a spot in the College Football Playoff. "It's just great to be back here again," Rhoades said as he pointed out the section where he used to watch games. "It's just ... so cool." For Bloom, the success that coach Deion Sanders has brought to the program means more reunions with teammates as they pass through town. "I've been through many years where nobody comes to visit," Bloom said. "It's fun that Boulder has become the epicenter of college football." Paying athletes Leading the way for Colorado this season have been quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Hunter, who's the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. But what particularly pleases Bloom is that Sanders, Hunter and the rest of college football players are able to finally profit through name, image and likeness. In his day, Bloom got caught in the NCAA crosshairs for wanting to play both sports and to have sponsors in one (skiing) so he could fund his Olympic aspirations. How time have changed. "I'm just really grateful that this generation of athletes gets to monetize their skills and ability," said Bloom, who finished sixth in moguls at the 2006 Winter Games in Italy. "It's the right thing." He's thrown his passion into fulfilling wishes such as learning ballet, riding in a Formula 1 pace car or taking a flight in a fighter jet. He's also helped reconnect families and friends, including a reunion for a trio of centenarian sisters who hadn't seen each other in more than a decade. This granted wish has stuck with Bloom: A person in Alabama wasn't able to travel after being diagnosed with end-of-life emphysema. So he asked for postcards to be sent, just to learn what made someone's town so special. He received 2,000 postcards from 26 different countries. "There's no end to the things that they've done for us in the world," Bloom said of older adults. "We're one of the organizations that reminds them that their dreams still do matter and that we still appreciate them and we cherish them."
Donald Trump Jr. has publicly confirmed neither a breakup from longtime fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle nor a new relationship with Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson. But sources close to Trump Jr., 46, and the family of President-elect Donald Trump are opening up t o People magazine about the reasons that Trump Jr. became tired of his six-year relationship to Guilfoyle, 55, and began dating the younger Anderson about six months ago, “right under Guilfoyle’s nose,” as the Daily Beast added . It turns out that Trump Jr. didn’t like Guilfoyle’s “style,” including the “tight dresses,” a political source told People in another report . He felt that the 39-year-old Anderson, with her honey-blonde hair and “Waspy” model looks, would “impress” his father and perhaps make her a more ideal romantic partner. “Don Jr. has always wanted to look good in his father’s eyes,” the political source told People. Meanwhile, Trump family members got tired of Guilfoyle’s attention-seeking ways and are happy that the former Fox News host will be leaving their “immediate sphere” to take a job as Trump’s new ambassador to Greece, People reported. “Kim is not a nice person and always wants the limelight,” a source told People in another report . The former first lady of San Francisco-turned Trump loyalist couldn’t help but become aware that her fiancée had begun seeing Anderson, 39, after he took the socialite on a trip to Alaska and started to introduce her to family and friends as his new girlfriend, even “when he was still very much with Kim,” People reported. “For the most part Kim has looked the other way because she loves the power and lifestyle,” the source told People. When Guilfoyle became Trump Jr.’s girlfriend in 2018, she also became a top campaigner and fundraiser for Trump and one-half of a MAGA power couple. And, as Trump himself said on Truth Social Tuesday, he named her to be U.S. ambassador to Greece in part because he wanted to reward her for being “a close friend and ally.” But, as many suspected, sending Guilfoyle off to Europe was part of a Trump family plan to “remove her from the picture,” so that Anderson could take her place as Trump Jr.’s new significant other, People reported. “They are trying to send Kim abroad,” a political insider told People, who added that Anderson also wanted Guilfoyle “out of the area.” The plan also was for Trump Jr. to wait for the election to pass before letting the public know that he no longer saw a future with Guilfoyle and had a new woman in his life — who also happens to be “a big Republican,” People reported. “They didn’t want the split to get in the way of anything to hurt Donald in the election,” the political insider told People. The U.K. tabloid the Daily Mail on Tuesday confirmed months of speculation that Trump Jr. and Anderson were an item by publishing photos of the two leaving a dinner date in Palm Beach Monday night. Later Tuesday, Trump announced he was nominating Guilfoyle to be the U.S. ambassador to Greece. For public purposes, Guilfoyle said on social media that she was “honored” to accept the nomination, while Trump Jr. gallantly said on X, “I am so proud of Kimberly. She loves America and she always has wanted to serve the country as an ambassador.” Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle, the ex-wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, began dating in 2018, shortly after Trump Jr.’s first wife, Vanessa, filed for divorce to end their 12-year marriage. Trump Jr. and Vanessa share five children. Guilfoyle also left her lucrative job at Fox News after she began dating Trump Jr. The New Yorker reported in 2020 that Guilfoyle was effectively forced out of her Fox News job, following a human resources into allegations that she engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior in the workplace. As a couple, Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle, a former San Francisco prosecutor, became known as “the prom king and queen of MAGA” politics as they campaigned together around the country on his father’s behalf. At donor events, they also were known for alluding to their playful sex life, while Guilfoyle often liked to introduce herself to the crowd — or appear at Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021 rally preceding the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol — doing a sexy dance. At such events, Trump Jr. appeared to take delight in Guilfoyle’s sexy dances and flamboyant style. But at some point he began to get weary of it, according to the political insider who said that he had started to complain about her “style,” People reported. Others in their “orbit” shared his complaints, according to People. “Don Jr. has been telling people for months that Kim is so uptight and always dresses so professionally in these kinds of dresses and high heels, and never looks relaxed or casual,” the political source said, while commenting to People on “the optics” of the relationship. “The tight dresses need to go and she has been told that.” Apparently, Anderson’s more natural, fun-loving style is more to Trump Jr.’s taste these days, especially as he sees that she could become his “own Melania Trump equivalent,” a source told People. “She is a party girl, and outgoing, and Don is smitten with her,” a Palm Beach source told People. “Bettina is smart, sexy and savvy and knows it. She likes to have fun,” another source added. “Who knows what, if anything, will come from this.”

Who is Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to replace FBI director Chris Wray?OTTAWA — Incoming U.S. president Donald Trump is brushing off Ontario's threat to restrict electricity exports in retaliation for sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods, as the province floats the idea of effectively barring sales of American alcohol. On Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford said Ontario is contemplating restricting electricity exports to Michigan, New York state and Minnesota if Trump follows through on a threat to impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada. "That's OK if he that does that. That's fine," Trump told American network CNBC when asked Thursday about Ford’s remarks on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. “The United States is subsidizing Canada and we shouldn’t have to do that," Trump added. "And we have a great relationship. I have so many friends in Canada, but we shouldn’t have to subsidize a country," he said, claiming this amounts to more than US$100 billion annually in unspecified subsidies. Meanwhile, an official in the Ford government says it's considering restricting the Liquor Control Board of Ontario from buying American-made alcohol. The province says the Crown agency is the largest purchaser of alcohol in the world. The province also says it could restrict exports of Canadian critical minerals required for electric-vehicle batteries, and bar American companies from provincial procurement. Ford doubled down Thursday on the idea of cutting off energy exports. The province says that in 2013, Ontario exported enough energy to power 1.5 million homes in those three states. "It's a last resort," Ford said. "We're sending a message to the U.S. (that if) you come and attack Ontario, you attack livelihoods of people in Ontario and Canadians, we are going to use every tool in our tool box to defend Ontarians and Canadians. Let’s hope it never comes to that." Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce said the province would rather have co-operation with the U.S., but has mechanisms to "end power sale into the U.S. market" the day Trump takes office on Jan. 20. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith ruled out following suit. "Under no circumstances will Alberta agree to cut off oil and gas exports," she said. "Our approach is one of diplomacy, not threats." Michael Sabia, president and CEO of Hydro-Québec, said "it's not our current intention" to cut off Quebec's exports to Massachusetts or New York state, but he conceded it might be possible. "Our intention is to respect those contracts, both because they're legally binding, but also because it's part of, in our view, a sound relationship with the United States," he said. "It's a questionable instrument to use in a trade conflict." Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew would not directly say whether Manitoba would threaten to withhold hydroelectric exports. "We are preparing our list and starting to think through what those options should look like," he said. "I'm not going to make specific news today about items that we're looking at." Kinew added that some premiers felt retaliatory measures wouldn't work in a call Trudeau held Wednesday. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey said "we have no interest in stopping" the export of energy to the U.S., adding that a trade war would hurt both countries. "We hope it is just bluster; we're preparing as if it is not," he said. Canada supplies more oil to the U.S. than any other country. About 60 per cent of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85 per cent of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada sold $170 billion worth of energy products last year to the U.S. It also has 34 critical minerals and metals the Pentagon is eager for. Trump has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tax on all products entering the United States from Canada and Mexico unless they stem the flow of migrants and drugs. Canadian officials have said it is unfair to lump Canada in with Mexico. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Canada since has promised more border security spending to address Trump's border concerns. Ford said that will include more border and police officers, as well as drones and sniffer dogs.
