Editor’s note: “Quantum Computing Revolution: The Gargantuan Opportunity Investors Shouldn’t Ignore” was previously published in November 2024 with the title, “Quantum Computing: the Key to Unlocking AI’s Full Potential?” It has since been updated to include the most relevant information available. For the past two years, AI stocks have been all the rage on Wall Street, regularly outperforming the broader market. Exchange-traded funds – such as the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF ( AIQ ) and the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF ( ARKQ ) – represent strong proxies for the industry as a whole. And as you can see in the graph below, those AI plays have been killing it . But recently, a new evolution of AI stocks has emerged as, potentially, this whole AI Revolution’s biggest winners. They’re called “ QAI ,” or Quantum Artificial Intelligence , stocks. These are trades at the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. And they have absolutely soared over recent months. One is up more than 400% since early September 2024, while another has popped more than 500%. And those are the “small” winners... Three other QAI stocks have rocketed 1,000% in that same time – with one up more than 3,500%! These companies are creating the next-gen quantum computers that could entirely revolutionize AI software development and create a new class of super-powered AI applications. And some may just end up being the biggest market winners of this decade. To understand why, we’ll need to take a deep look into this groundbreaking technology. What Is Quantum Computing? Let me start by saying that the underlying physics of this technological breakthrough – quantum mechanics – is a highly complex topic. It would likely require over 500 pages to fully understand. But, alas, here’s my best job at making a Cliff’s Notes version in 500 words instead. For centuries, scientists have developed, tested, and validated the laws of the physical world, known as classical mechanics. These scientifically explain how and why things work, where they come from, so on and so forth. But in 1897, J.J. Thomson discovered the electron. And he unveiled a new, subatomic world of super-small things that didn’t obey the laws of classical mechanics... at all. Instead, they obeyed their own set of rules, which have since become known as quantum mechanics. The rules of quantum mechanics differ from that of classical mechanics in two very weird, almost-magical ways. First , in classical mechanics, objects are in one place at one time. You are either at the store or at home, not both. But in quantum mechanics, subatomic particles can theoretically exist in multiple places at once before they’re observed. A single subatomic particle can exist in point A and point B at the same time until we observe it. And at that point, it only exists at either point A or point B. So, the true “location” of a subatomic particle is some combination of all its possible positions. This is called quantum superposition . Entanglement Second , in classical mechanics, objects can only “work” with things that are also “real.” Of course, you can’t use an imaginary friend to help move the couch. You need a real friend instead. But remember how the true location of a subatomic particle is the combination of all of its probabilistic states? Well, all those states are not independent; they’re entangled. So, if we know something about the probabilistic positioning of one subatomic particle, then we know something about the probabilistic positioning of another. It’s all connected. And that means that theoretically, all of these probabilistic states can work together, all at once, to create a super-complex ecosystem. This is called quantum entanglement. Between entanglement and superpositioning, subatomic particles can theoretically have multiple probabilistic states at once. And all those states can work together – again, all at once – to accomplish some task. Pretty wild, right? It goes against everything classical mechanics taught us about the world. It goes against common sense. But it’s true. It’s real. And now, for the first time ever, we are learning how to harness this unique phenomenon to change everything about everything ... That is why some folks think quantum computing could be more revolutionary for humankind than the discovery of fire or the invention of the wheel. And I agree. Mark my words. Quantum mechanics could very well reshape our world over the next few years. And some investors may end up making a lot of money because of it. Quantum Computing Will Change the World You see; the study of quantum theory has made huge advancements over the past century, especially so over the past decade. Scientists at leading laboratories and tech companies have started figuring out how to harness the almost-magical powers of quantum mechanics to make a new generation of super quantum computers . These devices are infinitely faster and more powerful than even today’s fastest supercomputers. In the words of Haim Israel, Bank of America’s head of Thematic Research: Again, the physics behind quantum computers is highly complex. But here’s my shortened version... Today’s computers are built on top of the laws of classical mechanics. That is, they store information on what are called bits , which can store data binarily as either “1” or “0.” But what if you could turn those classical bits into quantum bits – qubits – to leverage superpositioning to be both “1” and “0” stores at once? Further, what if you could leverage entanglement and have all multi-state qubits work together to solve computationally taxing problems? Theoretically, you’d create a machine with so much computational power that it would make today’s most advanced supercomputers seem ancient. That’s exactly what’s happening today. The Possibilities Behind Quantum Computing Earlier this month, Google unveiled its latest quantum processor, Willow. At that reveal, Google announced that Willow had solved a complex calculation – one that takes its fastest classical supercomputer around 10 septillion years to complete – in just five minutes . Ten septillion years (which, written out, is 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) cut down to five minutes... That is the very real power of quantum computers. Just imagine the possibilities if we could shorten and simplify all the world’s problems in a similar manner. We may finally have the level of AI that you see in movies. Arguably the biggest limitation to today’s AI is the robustness of machine learning algorithms, which are constrained by supercomputing capacity. Expand that capacity, and you’d get infinitely improved machine learning algos – and infinitely smarter AI. We may be able to eradicate disease . Of course, we already have tools like gene editing. But, as with AI, gene editing tech’s effectiveness relies on the robustness of the underlying computing capacity to identify, target, insert, cut, or repair genes. With quantum computing capacity, all that could happen without error in seconds. What about a million-mile EV? We can only improve batteries if we can test them. And we can only test in the real world so much. Therefore, one way to unlock a million-mile battery is through simulation. And the higher the underlying computing capacity, the faster and more effective the simulations. There’s seemingly no limit to what such powerful computing capacity could lead us to... Which means the economic opportunities here are truly enormous. The Final Word That is why I state with such confidence that quantum computing is the most underrated and most transformational technological breakthrough since the internet. In fact, it may be bigger than the internet. And Wall Street is starting to take notice. Per my research, there are five noteworthy pure QAI stocks. All five are up more than 5X since early September. Three have surged more than 10X: Quantum Computing ( QUBT ), Rigetti ( RGTI ), and D-Wave Quantum ( QBTS ). And one – QUBT – has rocketed an astounding 35X. These stocks are on fire. Though, to be sure, not all of them will succeed in the long run. Some of these QAI stocks will be flashes in the pan, like how Pets.com or Webvan were back in the 1990s. But some could easily become the next Nvidia ( NVDA ) or Microsoft ( MSFT ). And that’s why, at the very least, you should pay close attention to developments in the quantum computing industry. We’re definitely watching this industry like hawks, following every technical development and the stocks that seem to hold the most promise. The rebels are now working to establish security and start a political transition after seizing the capital on Sunday. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Friday, pressing ahead with efforts to unify Middle East nations in support of a peaceful political transition in Syria. It’s part of Blinken’s 12th trip to the Mideast since the Israel-Hamas war erupted last year in Gaza but his first after Assad was ousted. The U.S. is also making a renewed push for an ceasefire in Gaza, where the war has plunged more than 2 million Palestinians into a severe humanitarian crisis. Israel’s war against Hamas has killed over 44,800 Palestinians in Gaza, more than half of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not say how many were combatants. The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The October 2023 Hamas attack that sparked the war killed some 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, and around 250 others were taken hostage. Some 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead. Here's the latest: BEIRUT — Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes on Friday against sites in several cities in Syria, an opposition war monitor reported. Associated Press journalists heard loud explosions throughout the Syrian capital Damascus. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The strikes hit the summit of Mount Qasioun in Damascus, Khalkhala Airport in the countryside of Sweida and the Defense and Research Laboratories in Masyaf, located in the western countryside of Hama, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Earlier on Friday, Israeli strikes targeted six military sites in the countryside of Damascus and Sweida, the observatory said. Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes since the toppling of the Syrian regime, saying it seeks to neutralize potential threats following the ouster of Bashar Assad. The strikes have targeted weapons production sites, anti-aircraft batteries and airfields. Israel has also moved troops to occupy a buffer zone in the Golan Heights on its border with Syria. DAMASCUS, Syria — Russian forces and military vehicles were seen withdrawing from southern Syria on Friday toward their primary base in in the coastal city of Latakia. The Russian troop movement comes amid questions about whether Moscow will still be able to project power in the Middle East after the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad. His rule was supported by Russia and he received asylum in Russia after being toppled Sunday. There are also questions about what a Russian pullback in Syria could mean for the war in Ukraine. Significant Russian military convoys were seen on the Damascus-Homs highway near Shinshar village heading north. The military vehicles, bearing Russian flags, included tanks and armored personnel carriers. The military equipment had been previously stationed in southern regions such as Daraa and Damascus. On Thursday, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Russian forces were leaving bases in Ain Issa and Tel Al-Samn in the Al-Raqqah countryside. Satellite images released by Maxar Technologies on Friday show what appear to be cargo planes at a Russian military airfield in Syria with their nose cones opened to receive heavy equipment, along with helicopters being dismantled and prepared for transport. The Syrian insurgents who overthrew Syrian President Bashar Assad on Sunday did so with vital help from Turkey. WASHINGTON — The U.S. military has transported out of Syria an American who disappeared seven months ago into former President Bashar Assad’s notorious prison system and was among the thousands released this week by rebels, a U.S. official said Friday. Travis Timmerman was flown out of Syria on a U.S. military helicopter, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing operation. Timmerman, 29, told The Associated Press he had gone to Syria on a Christian pilgrimage and was not ill-treated while in Palestine Branch, a notorious detention facility operated by Syrian intelligence. He said he was freed by “the liberators who came into the prison and knocked the door down (of his cell) with a hammer.” Timmerman said he was released Monday morning alongside a young Syrian man and 70 female prisoners, some of whom had their children with them. The ten organizations told The Hague District Court last month that they thought the Netherlands was in violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention, drawn up following World War II, by continuing to sell weapons to Israel more than a year into the conflict in Gaza. “The government uses my own tax money, that I pay, to kill my own family. I’ve lost 18 members of my own family,” Ahmed Abofoul, a legal adviser for the pro-Palestinian organization Al-Haq, one of the groups involved in the lawsuit, told the court during a hearing in November . The court ruling said that “it is not up to the interim relief judge to order the state to reconsider government policy. That is primarily a political responsibility.” Lawyers for the government argued it wasn’t up to a judge to decide foreign policy for the Netherlands. The activist groups pointed to several emergency orders from another court, the International Court of Justice, as confirming the obligation to stop weapons sales. In January, the top U.N. court said it was plausible Palestinians were being deprived of some rights protected under the Genocide Convention. CAIRO — Israeli attacks in and around a hospital in northern Gaza wounded three medical staff overnight into Friday and caused damage to the isolated medical facility, according to its director. Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya said Israeli quadcopter drones carrying explosives deliberately targeted the emergency and reception area of Kamal Adwan Hospital, where one doctor was wounded for a third time. Abu Safiya said “relentless” drone and artillery strikes throughout the night exploded “alarmingly close” to the hospital, heavily damaging nearby buildings and destroying most of the water tanks on the hospital’s roof and blowing out doors and windows. Kamal Adwan Hospital in the town of Beit Lahiya has been hit multiple times over the past two months since Israel launched a fierce military operation against Hamas in northern Gaza. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the strikes. “We demand international protection for the hospital and its staff,” Abu Safiya said in a statement released via the U.K.-based aid group Medical Aid for Palestinians, “as well as the entry of delegations with surgical expertise, medical supplies, and essential medications to ensure we can adequately serve the people we are treating.” Abu Safiya said there were 72 wounded patients at the hospital, one of the few medical facilities left in northern Gaza. BAGHDAD — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced stop in Iraq on Friday on his latest visit to the Middle East aimed at stabilizing the situation in Syria to prevent further regional turmoil. Blinken met in Baghdad with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani as part of the hastily arranged trip, his 12th to the region since the Israel-Hamas war erupted last year but his first since the weekend ouster of Syrian strongman Bashar Assad. Blinken has already been to Jordan and Turkey on his current tour and will return to the Jordanian city of Aqaba for meetings on Saturday with Arab foreign ministers, Turkey’s foreign minister and the United Nations special envoy for Syria, the U.N. said. Blinken will try to unify support for an inclusive post-Assad transition that does not allow the Islamic State group to take advantage of the political vacuum in Syria and secures suspected chemical weapons stocks. In Baghdad, Blinken underscored “U.S. commitment to the U.S.-Iraq strategic partnership and to Iraq’s security, stability, and sovereignty,” the State Department said. “He will also discuss regional security opportunities and challenges, as well as enduring U.S. support for engagement with all communities in Syria to establish an inclusive transition,” it said in a statement. His trip comes as the Biden administration winds down with just over a month left before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Trump has been highly critical of Biden’s approach to the Middle East and skeptical of the U.S. military presence in both Iraq and Syria. The U.S. and Iraq agreed in September to wrap up U.S.-led military operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq next year, although Assad’s ouster and the potential for the group taking advantage of a political vacuum in Syria could complicate the timing of the withdrawal, according to American officials. DAMASCUS — The kingdom of Bahrain sent a message Friday to Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the leader of the insurgency that toppled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It said Bahrain is “fully prepared to consult with you continuously and to provide support in regional and international organizations to achieve what is in the interest of the brotherly Syrian people.” It added, “We look forward to Syria regaining its authentic role in the Arab League.” Bahrain is the current head of the Arab summit. Syria was readmitted to the Arab League last year after 12 years of ostracization. It is still unclear how the international community will deal officially with the new interim government in Syria. JERUSALEM - Israel’s defense minister told troops to prepare to remain through the winter months on the peak of Mount Hermon, Syria’s highest point, located in a swath of southern Syria that Israeli troops moved into after the fall of Damascus to insurgents. The comments by Defense Minister Israel Katz signaled that the military will extend its occupation of the zone along the border, which Israel says it seized to create a buffer zone. In a statement Friday, Katz said that holding the peak was of major importance for Israel’s security and that it would be necessary to build facilities there to sustain troops through the winter. The summit of Mount Hermon, the highest peak on the eastern Mediterranean coast at 2,814 meters (9,232 feet), gives a commanding view over the plains of southern Syria. It also positions Israeli troops about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the center of Damascus. The mount is divided between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Lebanon and Syria. Only the United States recognizes Israel’s control of the Golan Heights. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that Israeli troops would remain in the zone until another force across the border in Syria could guarantee security. Israeli troops moved into the zone -– set as a demilitarized area inside Syrian territory under truce deals that ended the 1973 Mideast war -- after the regime of Bashar al-Assad fell last weekend. ANKARA, Turkey -- U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday there was “broad agreement” between Turkey and the United States on what they would like to see in Syria following the ouster of President Bashar Assad. “There’s broad agreement on what we would like to see going forward, starting with the interim government in Syria, one that is inclusive and non-sectarian and one that protects the rights of minorities and women” and does not “pose any kind of threat to any of Syria’s neighbors,” Blinken said in joint statements with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The insurgent groups that toppled Assad in Syria have not made clear their policy or stance on Israel, whose military in recent days has bombed sites all over the country, saying it is trying to prevent weapons from falling into extremist hands. Blinken also said it was crucial to keep the Islamic State group under control. “We also discussed the imperative of continuing the efforts to keep ISIS down. Our countries worked very hard and gave a lot over many years to ensure the elimination of the territorial caliphate of ISIS to ensure that that threat doesn’t rear its head again,” Blinken said. The Turkish foreign minister said the two discussed ways of establishing prosperity in Syria and ending terrorism in the country. “Our priority is establishing stability in Syria as soon as possible, preventing terrorism from gaining ground, and ensuring that IS and the PKK aren’t dominant,” Fidan said, in a reference to the banned Kurdistan Workers Party. Blinken said: “We’re very focused on Syria, very focused on the opportunity that now is before us and before the Syrian people to move from out from under the shackles of Bashar al-Assad to a different and better future for the Syrian people, one that the Syrian people decide for themselves.” Blinken and Fidan said they had also discussed a ceasefire for Gaza. “We’ve seen in the last couple of weeks more encouraging signs that (a ceasefire) is possible,” Blinken said. Blinken, who is making his 12th trip to the Mideast since the Israel-Hamas war erupted last year but first since the weekend ouster of Assad, met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan late Thursday. The outgoing Biden administration is particularly concerned that a power vacuum in Syria could exacerbate already heightened tensions in the region, which is already wracked by multiple conflicts, and create conditions for the Islamic State group to regain territory and influence. Later Friday, Blinken is to return to Jordan for meetings on Saturday with Arab foreign ministers and senior officials from the European Union, the Arab League and the United Nations. ANKARA, Turkey -- Turkey has appointed a temporary charge d’affaires to reopen its embassy in Syria, Turkey’s state-run news agency reported. The Turkish Embassy in Damascus had suspended operations in 2012 due to the escalating security problems during the Syrian civil war and embassy staff and their families were recalled to Turkey. The Anadolu Agency said late Thursday that Turkey appointed Burhan Koroglu, its ambassador in Mauritania, to the post. UNITED NATIONS- – Two U.N. aid convoys were violently attacked in Gaza, making it virtually impossible for humanitarian agencies to operate without putting staff and civilians at risk, the U.N. food agency says. On Wednesday, a 70-truck convoy from Kerem Shalom was waiting for personnel to safeguard the food and other aid destined for central Gaza when there were reported attacks by Israeli forces in the nearby humanitarian zone, the U.N. World Food Program said Thursday. More than 50 people are now estimated to have died in the attacks, including civilians and local security personnel who had been expected to ensure the convoy’s safety, WFP said. The Rome-based agency said the convoy was forced to proceed from Kerem Shalom to central Gaza without any security arrangements, using the Philadelphi corridor, an Israeli-controlled route that had been recently approved and successfully utilized twice. On the way, WFP said, conflict and insecurity led to a loss of communication with the convoy for more than 12 hours. ”Eventually, the trucks were found but all food and aid supplies were looted,” the U.N. agency said. In a second incident, Israeli soldiers approached a WFP convoy moving out of the Kissufim crossing into central Gaza, fired warning shots, conducted extensive security checks, and temporarily detained drivers and staff, the agency said. “As the trucks were delayed, four out of the five trucks were lost to violent armed looting,” WFP said. UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations chief has a message for Israel: Stop the attacks on Syria. Secretary-General António Guterres is particularly concerned about several hundred Israeli airstrikes on several Syrian locations and stresses “the urgent need to de-escalate violence on all fronts throughout the country," U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters Thursday. The Israeli military said Tuesday it carried out more than 350 strikes in Syria over the previous 48 hours, hitting “most of the strategic weapons stockpiles” in the country to stop them from falling into the hands of extremists. Israel also acknowledged pushing into a buffer zone inside Syria following last week’s overthrow of President Bashar Assad. The buffer zone was established after Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1973 war. Dujarric said Guterres condemns all actions violating the 1974 ceasefire agreement between the two countries that remain in force. And the U.N. chief calls on the parties to uphold the agreement and end “all unauthorized presence in the area of separation” and refrain from any action undermining the ceasefire and stability in the Golan Heights, the spokesman said.

Police in South Wales and Gwent will become the first police units in the UK to use mobile apps with facial recognition that can scan a person’s face in “near real-time.” The app, known as operator-initiated facial recognition (OIFR), allows law enforcement to take a photograph of a person’s face with a mobile phone and match it to a predetermined database. The technology, however, has quickly come under scrutiny from rights groups that warn that police searches could be conducted against thousands of photos of innocent people. Police say that the OIFR will enable quick identification of suspects and missing persons. The facial recognition feature can also be used when a person is found unconscious or dead, refuses to identify themselves or provides a fake name. “This mobile phone app means that with the taking of a single photograph which is compared to the police database, officers can easily and quickly answer the question of ‘Are you really the person we are looking for?” says Trudi Meyrick, assistant chief constable to the South Wales Police. The app has already been tested by 70 officers across South Wales, securing quick arrests and detentions. However, digital rights group Big Brother Watch says that mobile facial recognition could create a “dangerous imbalance” between the public’s rights and the police’s powers. For years, regulators and rights groups have been that the police are storing images of innocent people in its national database which may be used for facial recognition checks. This is despite a ruling that keeping custody images of people who faced no charge or were charged and then acquitted is unlawful. “South Wales Police will search against thousands of unlawfully held photos every time they do a face scan, and they should be fixing this ongoing industrial-scale privacy breach rather than exploiting these photos for yet more surveillance,” says Jake Hurfurt, head of Research and Investigations at Big Brother Watch. According to the organization, South Wales Police has disproportionately targeted ethnic minorities for face scans, which may further undermine trust in the police. The police note that in private places such as houses, schools, medical facilities and places of worship the app will only be used in situations carrying a risk of significant harm. Photos taken through the app will not be retained. “The use of this technology always involves human decision-making and oversight,” says Gwent Police Assistant Chief Constable Nick McLain. While the UK government has been equipping police with more facial recognition surveillance tools, privacy and data watchdogs have been warning of lacking oversight. Rishi Sunak’s government had planned to eliminate the post of the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner, transferring of the responsibilities for biometrics regulation to the Information Commissioner’s Office. However, the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDI) that was supposed to enable this change was in May due to the UK elections. Since then, England and Wales have had limited oversight, according to the Scottish Biometrics Commissioner Brian Plastow. The Home Office has been “gapping” the position since Tony Eastaugh left in mid-August, Plastow tells in an email. Members of the Credit Union have been voting for one of these three groups. LIMERICK Suicide Watch (LSW) is fully funded through public donations, and PRO Audrey Ellis said it would be brilliant for them to win the prize from Sarsfield Credit Union as they could update equipment and afford more training for volunteers. “The more money we have, the more we're able to go out, and offer the public.” Audrey said they're updating their equipment at the moment. “We have a thermal camera and all that, but it has to be updated... For each person to go out at night, it costs them by the time they're all equipped, their training, and everything costs about €650.” A lot of their funding goes towards riverside training and child protection training. “We all have to be certified in all courses to be prepared for anything that could happen,” stated Audrey. The charity was formed in May 2016 with limited volunteers and has grown to a 55-strong team of volunteers since then. Audrey explained that LSW keep an eye on people that are showing signs of distress or that could be contemplating suicide by patrolling the bridges and the area along the River Shannon in the city centre. “We patrol four nights a week for a minimum of four hours. We don't do less than that, some nights we could be out six, seven hours.” LSW depends on donations and fundraising events to help fund its day-to-day operation. The voluntary group is seeking a new base as they have to leave their current base at the rear of the Tate Centre next year. Audrey said they're trying to secure a permanent base but haven't found anywhere suitable yet. Meanwhile, Blue Box Creative Learning Centre would be thrilled to partner with Sarsfield Credit Union. CEO Bryan Gough said this would represent a wonderful opportunity for them to further their shared goal of community empowerment. “This recognition highlights the available intervention that our therapists provide to children.” Blue Box aim to support children and young people who are experiencing, emotional, behavioural, trauma or psychological challenges to realise their full potential through Play or Creative Art Therapies. They apply a trauma informed nondirective approach to support the children and families. They provide free therapy support to children in eleven DEIS schools in Limerick and also provide on-site services. READ MORE: Leading Limerick soprano to take on job of business group's president Bryan explained: “We work closely with statutory services like TUSLA and the HSE to provide much needed services to children who experience trauma, emotional, behavioural, or psychological challenges to realise their full potential.” If BlueBox was chosen as the charity partner, Bryan said the money would go towards providing free therapies to, children in the local community. “It would be an amazing opportunity to lift the profile of Blue Box and for the local community to understand what options are out there for children who are in need of psychological intervention.” He concluded: “The schools that we provide service to all say that it's an invaluable service and it should be expanded.” It's the only charity that provides free support and therapy to children in Limerick. BLOOD Bikes Mid West Ireland which provides free transport to the HSE, private hospitals, clinics and hospices celebrated a decade in operation last year and is continuing its delivery of effective healthcare. Volunteer with the charity, Brendan Caffrey said winning the credit union prize would help them sustain their fleet because all their funding is going towards fuel and insurance. He added that the prize would also go towards servicing tyres and kitting out the vehicles for the coming year. The charity is dependant on donations as it doesn't receive government or HSE funding. “We fundraise around the shopping centres throughout the year in Limerick and in Shannon and we primarily rely on donors and the fundraising at those events to pretty much keep the service going,” explained Brendan. Blood Bikes Mid West was set up in 2013 to provide an out of hours service to the local hospitals and to patients in their own homes. It then progressed to a 24/7 365 days of the year service. They collect medical records, scans, blood samples, medical equipment, breast milk and chemotherapy drugs and transport them around the Munster region to and from hospitals and people in their own homes. “We link up with other groups in Cork, in Galway, in Dublin, and Athlone to deliver stuff across the country,” said Brendan. One very important additional service is the transportation of breast milk. The Human Milk Bank is located in Fermanagh and regular trips are required to ensure the Maternity Hospital Limerick is kept stocked in order to help support premature babies and their mothers. The organisation was set up in response to the need for an out of hours service providing the transport of essential items to relieve emergency situations.
