Brazilian antitrust regulator Cade said on Monday that Apple must lift restrictions on payment methods for in-app purchases, among other things, as the watchdog moved to proceed with an investigation into a complaint filed by Latin America ecommerce giant MercadoLibre. Apple in Brazil declined to comment. MercadoLibre did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal business hours. MercadoLibre's complaint, filed in 2022 in Brazil and Mexico, accused Apple of imposing a series of restrictions on the distribution of digital goods and in-app purchases, including banning apps from distributing third-party digital goods and services such as movies, music, video games, books and written content. In the complaint, MercadoLibre criticised the California tech giant for requiring developers that offer digital goods or services within apps to use Apple's own payment system and stopping them from redirecting buyers to their websites. Cade ruled that Apple must allow app developers to add tools so customers can buy their services or products outside the app, such as through the use of hyperlinks to external websites. Warning : This story contains distressing content about residential schools. Northwest B.C. First Nation Nadleh Whut’en has confirmed the identification of potential unmarked graves at the site of the former Lejac Indian Residential School, located at Tseyaz Bunk’ut near Fraser Lake. Earlier in May, the First Nation had said it would search the residential school site using both ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometry to detect irregularities underground. Lejac Indian Residential School operated from 1922 to 1976, impacting children from over 70 Nations. Nadleh Whut’en's announcement on November 30 follows nearly two years of geophysical surveys that began after Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation revealed in 2021 that they had identified around 200 potential burial sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Nadleh Whut’en said the preliminary findings from GPR and magnetometry surveys at Lejac uncovered geophysical signatures consistent with burials. These results are part of ongoing efforts to locate and honour the children who died while attending residential schools in Canada, the First Nation said. The survey, conducted by the guiding team of the Nez Keh Hubuk’uznootah project, which translates to "Let's Look for our Children" in Dakelh, covers a 142,500 square-meter area (about 27 football fields). The research is a response to survivor testimony and archival records that suggest numerous children may have been buried in unmarked graves at Lejac. During its operation, at least 7,850 Indigenous children, including day scholars, attended the residential school, which subjected students to harsh conditions, including forced labor, abuse, and the loss of cultural identity. The school’s cemetery, where some graves are marked, has long been known to survivors. However, the recent surveys suggest there are additional unmarked graves that have not been accounted for. “The work is hard and it takes a long time – and we are bringing information forward as we receive it because survivors have a right to know,” Nadleh Whut’en Chief Beverly Ketlo said about the importance of these findings. The Lejac Indian Residential School has had an active cemetery on the grounds since it was founded in 1922. "We have always known that there were children buried at Lejac because many of their graves are marked in a cemetery. I want you to ask yourself if your elementary school had a cemetery,” Ketlo added. Ketlo said this is not just a thing of the past but the horrors experienced at Lejac are still very real for the survivors who lived through this "genocide.” “Lejac relentlessly taught the children that they were inferior. They were forcibly taken from their families, lands, and cultures, leading them to believe that everything about their identity was wrong,” she said. The geophysical surveys, which were conducted in winter 2023 and spring/summer 2024, used advanced technologies to detect disturbances beneath the surface that could indicate burial sites. GPR sends radar pulses into the ground, revealing underground conditions, while magnetometry detects metal objects and magnetic changes. This data is being analyzed by two independent teams of experts and will guide future steps in the search for missing children. Former Chief Archie Patrick of Stellat’en First Nation, a survivor of Lejac, expressed hope that these efforts would help bring justice to those affected. “Lejac is still with me. I continue to deal with the upheaval of being taken from my parents, and the daily trauma of living at that place. But I am so pleased that the stories of survivors are finally being brought to light.” The findings are part of ongoing work, and no immediate plans for excavation or exhumation have been made. The guiding team, made up of survivors and inter-generational survivors, is overseeing the research and will determine the next steps. The federal government has committed to funding these efforts, and an estimated 20 years of work remain to uncover the full truth about the missing children from residential schools across Canada. If you are an Indian residential school survivor or have been affected by the residential school system and need help, you can contact the 24-hour Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line: 1-866-925-4419.

Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? Manitoba’s acting education minister defended the province against criticism it takes an opaque approach to child-care oversight during question period Monday. The matter was raised by Carrie Hiebert, MLA for Morden-Winkler and families critic, citing a highlighting the lack of transparency around “trackers” the province uses when child-care centres are not meeting “key standards” or have “serious issues.” “The NDP like to talk a big game about transparency. However, if you ask them to actually be transparent, you get silence, vague future dates and spokespersons,” Hiebert said during question period. “Why is this minister taking a secretive approach to the oversight of child-care facilities, as described by the media?” In response, acting Education Minister Tracy Schmidt said: “There is no issue with transparency on this side of the house.” The use of such trackers was discovered through a freedom of information request seeking insight into why the province said it would take more than 8,000 hours to compile and share child-care inspection reports. Internal emails shared in response to the access request suggested that the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning uses the trackers to keeps tabs on facilities not in full compliance with standards, though staff continued to say it would be too labour-intensive to share all inspection reports. Asked earlier this month how many how many centres are on the lists, a provincial spokesperson would not say. Critics say this is part of a pattern of secrecy and poor record keeping that includes the department not making public inspection reports from child-care centres or knowing how many facilities have temporary “provisional” licences, issues raised during a investigation into the state of child care in Manitoba earlier this year. “Parents deserve better, children deserve better and child-care staff deserve better,” Hiebert said. She said the province refuses to say if it will stop “hiding” the list of facilities with deficiencies and asked if it will commit to making child-care inspection reports public. Schmidt did not answer the question. “The suggestion that we are being anything but transparent is absolutely false,” Schmidt said. “That being said, we are absolutely happy to work with families, to work with the sector, to ensure that if there are deficiencies, that they will absolutely be addressed.” Currently, if the member of the public wishes to access a child-care inspection report, they can request it from the individual facility, but the facility is not required to share it. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. In cases where a facility is not meeting standards as set out by the province, including child-to-staff ratios, criminal record checks, and health and safety requirements, these issues are are noted on the facility’s provisional licence, which is posted online. However, no details are provided and the issues are listed in regulatory jargon making it difficult to understand what the problem is and how it is being addressed. Other provinces share detailed information about child-care inspections including why the inspection took place, what issues were uncovered and how serious the deficiencies are. In Manitoba, if serious issues arise, such as a child left alone for a period of time, it can result in a licensing order issued by the director of the early learning and child-care program. Details of these orders are made public and posted on the province’s website. The asked again Monday if the province will share the number of facilities and names of facilities on its tracking lists or make inspection reports public. A provincial spokesperson did not answer the questions but noted that licensing orders past and present are posted online. “Disclosure of this type of information is amongst the most proactive and transparent in Canada,” the spokesperson said. katrina.clarke@freepress.mb.ca Katrina Clarke is an investigative reporter at the . NRL Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Broncos are in the box seat to sign Ben Hunt with the Queensland Origin star set to rule out a move to expansion rivals the Dolphins as D-Day approaches. This masthead can reveal the battle for Hunt’s signature has taken a dramatic twist, with a rumoured move to the Roosters in danger of collapsing, while Bulldogs football boss Phil Gould is poised to make a last-ditch pitch. That has sensationally opened the door for an ambush from the Broncos, who have been proactively courting Hunt in their push to engineer a Red Hill reunion. Hunt’s initial preference was to remain in Sydney for family reasons in the wake of his departure from the Dragons - leaving the Roosters and Bulldogs as serious options. But well-placed sources say Hunt is now leaning towards the Broncos after a tour of Brisbane’s opulent $27 million training headquarters, where he held preliminary talks with coach Michael Maguire and CEO Dave Donaghy. Ben Hunt last played for the Kangaroos in the Pacific Cup. Picture: Max Mason-Hubers Hunt also met with Brisbane’s River City rivals the Dolphins during his Sunshine State sortie, but it’s understood the 34-year-old has little interest in a move to Redcliffe. Hunt left Brisbane at the end of 2017, just as the club’s new training headquarters was being finalised, and he returned home last weekend to be blown away by the unrivalled infrastructure of the Broncos. The Australian utility still owns property in Brisbane and during last year’s Origin series, Hunt spoke of his desire to come home to Queensland. The Roosters were rated the frontrunner to win Hunt’s signature, but it’s understood the Bondi glamour club has salary-cap constraints and may not be able to win a bidding war. Hunt has run his eye over the individual rosters of his suitors - Brisbane, the Roosters, Dolphins and Bulldogs - and believes the Broncos are a ready-made force to help him achieve his final frontier: winning a premiership. It’s believed no club has tabled a formal deal for Hunt at this stage, but he hopes to garner all offers over the weekend with a view to making a definitive call early next week. Ben Hunt played 187 games for the Brisbane Broncos. Picture: Getty Images Canterbury supremo Gould shapes as the X-factor in Brisbane’s attempted raid. The Bulldogs have largely kept their powder dry, watching the Hunt machinations with interest, but after missing out on Storm superstar Ryan Papenhuyzen, Gould may up the ante in a bid to bring some playmaking experience to Belmore. Canterbury have set a budget of around $550,000 if they made an official move for Hunt and that figure may not be enough to secure the 334-game veteran. Hunt’s Dragons deal was worth $950,000 and the Dolphins are the only club with the salary-cap space to be able to offer a similar deal, but Redcliffe are currently a distant last in the race. One advantage for the Broncos is Hunt’s history with the club - he made his debut for Brisbane in 2009 and has unfinished business after the heartbreak of his 2015 grand-final loss to the Cowboys. Now, almost a decade later, Hunt is desperate to win a maiden premiership ring in his twilight years and Maguire said last week the Maroons maestro can help break Brisbane’s 19-year title drought in 2025. In conclusion, the match between Herrona and Liverpool is not just another game – it is a test of character, skill, and resilience. The Herrona coach's message to his team is clear: enjoy the experience, embrace the challenge, and give it your all. The stage is set for a memorable clash, and fans can expect a spectacle of footballing brilliance as two powerhouses go head-to-head in a battle for supremacy. Let the game begin, and may the best team emerge victorious.ZURICH (AP) — Saudi Arabia scored a major win in its campaign to attract major sports events to the kingdom when it was formally appointed as the 2034 World Cup host on Wednesday. Still, many questions remain about the tournament as well as the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with three games in South America. Here are some of the key issues that need to be answered over the next decade: Saudi Arabia proposes 15 stadiums — eight still on paper — in five cities: Eight in the capital Riyadh, four in the Red Sea port city Jeddah, and one each in Abha, Al Khobar and Neom, the planned futuristic mega-project. Each would have at least 40,000 seats for World Cup games. The opening game and final are set for a 92,000-seat venue planned in Riyadh. Some designs are vivid . In Neom, the stadium is planned 350 meters (yards) above street level and one near Riyadh is designed to be atop a 200-meter cliff with a retractable wall of LED screens. Saudi Arabia aims to host all 104 games, though there has been speculation that some games could be played in neighboring or nearby countries. Surely not in the traditional World Cup period of June-July, when temperatures in Saudi Arabia routinely exceed 40 Celsius (104 degrees). FIFA moved the Qatar-hosted World Cup to November-December 2022, though those dates were not loved by most European clubs and leagues whose seasons were interrupted. Also, that slot is complicated in 2034 by the holy month of Ramadan through mid-December and Riyadh hosting the multi-sport Asian Games. January 2034 could be a possibility even though that would be just before the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The International Olympic Committee has signaled it won’t be opposed to back-to-back major events. In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Saudi World Cup bid official Hammad Albalawi said the precise dates of the tournament are up the world soccer body. “That’s a decision by FIFA. We stand ready to be part of this conversation. But ultimately it’s a FIFA decision together with the confederations,” Albalawi said. Giving more rights and freedoms to women in a traditionally conservative society is fundamental to Saudi messaging around the modernization program known as Vision 2030. The kingdom decided in 2017 to let women attend sports events, initially in major cities and in family zones separate from men-only sections. By 2034, at the promised pace of social reforms, female fans should not be restricted. Saudi Arabia launched a women’s professional soccer league in 2022 with players joining from clubs in Europe. They face no restrictions playing in shorts and with hair uncovered. The Saudi prohibition of alcohol is clear and understood before FIFA signs any sponsor deals for 2034. But will there be any exceptions? The alcohol issue was problematic for the World Cup in Qatar because the expectation was created that beer sales would be allowed at stadiums even before Qatar won its bid in 2010. One year later, FIFA extended a long-time deal to have Budweiser as the official World Cup beer through 2022. Qatar then backtracked on that promise three days before the first game, causing confusion and the sense of a promise broken. In Qatar, alcohol was served only at luxury suites at the stadiums. Visitors could also have a drink in some hotel bars. But Saudi Arabia has even stricter rules on alcohol — and there is no indication that will change. Albalawi noted that Saudi Arabia has successfully hosted dozens of sports events where alcohol wasn't served. “We’re creating a safe and secure family environment for fans to bring their families into our stadiums,” he said. Saudi promises to reform and enforce labor laws, and fully respect migrant workers, have been accepted by FIFA but face broad skepticism from rights groups and trade unions. A formal complaint is being investigated by the U.N.-backed International Labor Organization. Protecting the migrant workers needed to build stadiums and other tournament projects — a decade after it was a defining issue for Qatar — looms as a signature challenge for Saudi Arabia. Saudi-Israeli relations had been improving when FIFA all but gave the 2034 World Cup to the kingdom on Oct. 4 last year. Three days later Hamas attacked Israel and diplomacy got more complicated. Any soccer federation bidding to host a FIFA tournament accepts a basic principle that whichever team qualifies is welcome. That did not stop Indonesia putting up barriers last year to Israel coming for the men’s Under-20 World Cup. Indonesia does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel which had qualified through a European tournament nine months before the issue flared. FIFA moved the entire tournament to Argentina and the Israeli team reached the semifinals. Israel played at the 1970 World Cup but has never advanced through qualifying in Europe, where it has been a member of UEFA for 30 years. Europe should have 16 places in the 48-team World Cup in Saudi Arabia. Most of the attention at the FIFA Congress on Wednesday was on the Saudi decision, but the soccer body and its members also formally approved the hosts of the 2030 World Cup — the most spread out and longest ever. One game each in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, the original host in 1930, will be played from June 8-9. The tournament resumes four days later for the other 101 games shared between Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Six countries, three continents, multiple languages and currencies. Fans traveling on planes, trains, automobiles and boats across about 14 kilometers (10 miles) of water between Spain and Morocco. The final is due on July 21, 2030 and a decision on where it will be played could cause some tension between the host countries. Morocco wants it in the world’s biggest soccer venue — the planned 115,000-seat King Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca. Spain, meanwhile, has proposed to host the final in either of the remodeled home stadiums of club giants Real Madrid or Barcelona. Associated Press writer Baraa Anwer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, contributed to this report.

However, while the decline in oil prices may bring short-term relief to consumers, it also poses challenges to oil-producing countries and oil companies. The sharp drop in oil prices has put pressure on the revenues of oil-producing countries, impacting their fiscal budgets and economic stability. Oil companies are also facing the challenge of maintaining profitability in the face of falling oil prices, which could potentially lead to cutbacks in production and exploration activities.

The Gunners delivered the statement Champions League victory their manager had demanded to bounce back from a narrow defeat at Inter Milan last time out. Goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard got their continental campaign back on track, lifting them to seventh place with 10 points in the new-look 36-team table. It was Arsenal’s biggest away win in the Champions League since beating Inter by the same scoreline in 2003. “For sure, especially against opposition we played at their home who have not lost a game in 18 months – they have been in top form here – so to play with the level, the determination, the purpose and the fluidity we showed today, I am very pleased,” said Arteta. “The team played with so much courage, because they are so good. When I’m watching them live they are so good! They were all exceptional today. It was a big performance, a big win and we are really happy. “The performance was there a few times when we have played big teams. That’s the level that we have to be able to cope and you have to make it happen, and that creates belief.” A memorable victory also ended Sporting’s unbeaten start to the season, a streak of 17 wins and one draw, the vast majority of which prompted Manchester United to prise away head coach Ruben Amorim. The Gunners took the lead after only seven minutes when Martinelli tucked in Jurrien Timber’s cross, and Saka teed up Havertz for a tap-in to double the advantage. Arsenal added a third on the stroke of half-time, Gabriel charging in to head Declan Rice’s corner into the back of the net. To rub salt in the wound, the Brazilian defender mimicked Viktor Gyokeres’ hands-over-his-face goal celebration. That may have wound Sporting up as they came out after the interval meaning business, and they pulled one back after David Raya tipped Hidemasa Morita’s shot behind, with Goncalo Inacio netting at the near post from the corner. But when Martin Odegaard’s darting run into the area was halted by Ousmane Diomande’s foul, Saka tucked away the penalty. Substitute Trossard added the fifth with eight minutes remaining, heading in the rebound after Mikel Merino’s shot was saved. A miserable night for prolific Sporting striker Gyokeres was summed up when his late shot crashed back off the post.

No revolution in history vanishes as quick as yesterday: Info MinisterDALLAS (AP) — The championship vision that led Nathan Eovaldi to sign with Texas as a free agent two years ago is the same one that brought him back to the Rangers. A World Series title in his first season was followed by a losing record this year. “I believe in the guys in the group that we have. We were able to do it in ‘23. I don’t feel a lot has changed,” Eovaldi said Friday, a day after finalizing a $75 million, three-year contract . “We had a down year last year, but I've said it before, you learn a lot from losing seasons.” Eovaldi had declined a $20 million player option to become a free agent again and reached an agreement during the winter meetings in Dallas. Texas also acquired slugging corner infielder Jake Burger in a swap with Miami. Burger had fallen asleep before getting a call late Tuesday night that he had been traded to Texas, where his family is planning to move after the October birth of a daughter with Down syndrome. “The other city that is really good other than Nashville in terms of children's hospital and resources for her Downs is in Dallas," Burger said. “Not just from the baseball spectrum, from the life aspect as well ... I feel like it was meant to be, and we couldn’t be more more excited about that.” In the Nashville area, Burger lives close to Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, whom he plans to visit with soon. His former Marlins manager, Skip Schumaker , was hired last month by the Rangers as a senior adviser for baseball operations, and Luis Urueta, Miami’s bench coach the past two seasons, recently joined Bochy’s on-field coaching staff for 2025. Burger and Rangers pitcher Dane Dunning were once roommates in the Chicago White Sox organization. Burger hit .250 with 29 home runs and 76 RBIs in 137 games for the Marlins last season, when he started 59 games at third base and 50 starts at first. He was with the White Sox in Texas when he got traded to Miami on Aug. 1, 2023, and four days later hit his first homer with the Marlins at Globe Life Field. When the Rangers made the title run in 2023, Eovaldi was 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA in six postseason starts. He was the winning pitcher in their World Series-clinching Game 5 at Arizona. He was also part of Boston’s 2018 title. Eovaldi was 12-8 this year with a 3.80 ERA in 29 starts, the last seven scoreless innings in the regular-season finale. He is 24-13 with a 3.72 ERA in 54 starts for Texas the past two seasons. The new deal for the Texas native, who who turns 35 in February, includes a $12 million signing bonus, half payable on Nov. 15, 2026, and the rest on Jan. 15, 2028, and salaries of $18 million next season, $25 million in 2026 and $20 million in 2027. He gets a full no-trade provision. After being welcomed back by Chris Young, the team's president of baseball operations, the pitcher said he never felt like he really left. The Rangers stayed in contact throughout the process after he declined his option Nov. 4. “Kind of listening to the market and everything, I’m extremely happy to be back. I’m glad we were we were able to make it all work out,” Eovaldi said. “We had a lot of teams reach out right away and we were in contact with most them across the league. Ultimately we were able to make it back here.” AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Texas' abortion pill lawsuit against New York doctor marks new challenge to interstate telemedicine Texas has sued a New York doctor for prescribing abortion pills to a Texas woman via telemedicine. It appears to be the first challenge in the U.S. to a state shield law that's intended to protect prescribers in Democratic-controlled states from being punished by states with abortion bans. Prescriptions like these, made online and over the phone, are a key reason that the number of abortions has increased across the U.S. even after state bans started taking effect. Most abortions in the U.S. involve pills rather than procedures. Anti-abortion groups are increasingly focusing on the rise of pills. Syrians cheer end of 50 years of Assad rule at first Friday prayers since government fell DAMASCUS (AP) — Exuberant Syrians observed the first Friday prayers since the ouster of President Bashar Assad, gathering in the capital’s historic main mosque, its largest square and around the country to celebrate the end of half a century of authoritarian rule. The newly installed interim prime minister delivered the sermon at the Umayyad Mosque, declaring that a new era of “freedom, dignity and justice” was dawning for Syria. The gatherings illustrated the dramatic changes that have swept over Syria less than a week after insurgents marched into Damascus and toppled Assad. Amid the jubilation, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with allies around the region and called for an “inclusive and non-sectarian” interim government. US military flies American released from Syrian prison to Jordan, officials say WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military has brought an American who was imprisoned in Syria for seven months out of the country. That's according to two U.S. officials, who said Friday that Travis Timmerman has been flown to Jordan on a U.S. military helicopter. The 29-year-old Timmerman told The Associated Press earlier Friday he had gone to Syria on a Christian pilgrimage and was not ill-treated while in a notorious detention facility operated by Syrian intelligence. He said he was freed by “the liberators who came into the prison and knocked the door down (of his cell) with a hammer.” New Jersey governor wants more federal resources for probe into drone sightings TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has asked the Biden administration to put more resources into the ongoing investigation of mysterious drone sightings being reported in the state and other parts of the region. Murphy, a Democrat, made the request in a letter Thursday, noting that state and local law enforcement remain “hamstrung” by existing laws and policies in their efforts to successfully counteract any nefarious drone activity. Murphy and other officials say there is no evidence that the drones pose a national security or a public safety threat. A state lawmaker says up to 180 aircraft have been reported to authorities since Nov. 18. Nancy Pelosi hospitalized after she 'sustained an injury' from fall on official trip to Luxembourg WASHINGTON (AP) — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalized after she “sustained an injury” during an official engagement in Luxembourg, according to a spokesman. Pelosi is 84. She was in Europe to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Her spokesman, Ian Krager, did not describe the nature of her injury or give any additional details, but a person familiar with the incident said that Pelosi tripped and fell while at an event with the other members of Congress. The person requested anonymity to discuss the fall because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly. Russia targets Ukrainian infrastructure with a massive attack by cruise missiles and drones KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has launched a massive aerial attack against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia fired 93 cruise and ballistic missiles and almost 200 drones in Friday's bombardments. He says it is one of the heaviest bombardments of the country’s energy sector since Russia’s full-scale invasion almost three years ago. He says Ukrainian defenses shot down 81 missiles, including 11 cruise missiles that were intercepted by F-16 warplanes provided by Western allies earlier this year. Zelenskyy renewed his plea for international unity against Russian President Vladimir Putin. But uncertainty surrounds how the war might unfold next year. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the war and has thrown into doubt whether vital U.S. military support for Kyiv will continue. Trump’s lawyers rebuff DA's idea for upholding his hush money conviction, calling it 'absurd' NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers are again urging a judge to throw out his hush money conviction. In a court filing Friday, they balked at the prosecution’s “absurd” idea for preserving the verdict by treating the case the way some courts do when a defendant dies before sentencing. The Manhattan district attorney’s office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. Some in seafood industry see Trump as fishermen's friend, but tariffs could make for pricier fish PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump is likely to bring big changes to seafood, one of the oldest sectors of the U.S. economy. Some in the industry believe the returning president will be more responsive to its needs. Economic analysts paint a more complicated picture, as they fear Trump’s pending trade hostilities with major trading partners Canada and China could make an already pricy kind of protein more expensive. Conservationists also fear Trump’s emphasis on deregulation could jeopardize fish stocks already in peril. But many in the commercial fishing and seafood processing industries said they expect Trump to allow fishing in protected areas and crack down on offshore wind expansion. OpenAI's legal battle with Elon Musk reveals internal turmoil over avoiding AI 'dictatorship' A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and best avoid an artificial intelligence ‘dictatorship’ is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker’s ongoing conversion into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. OpenAI is filing its response Friday. Paula Abdul settles lawsuit alleging sexual assault by 'American Idol' producer Nigel Lythgoe LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paula Abdul and former “American Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe have agreed to settle a lawsuit in which she alleged he sexually assaulted her in the early 2000s when she was a judge on the show. Abdul filed a notice of settlement in a Los Angeles court Thursday. The lawsuit filed nearly a year ago had also accused Lythgoe of sexually assaulting Abdul after she left “American Idol” and became a judge on Lythgoe’s other show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Lythgoe said at the time that the allegations were “an appalling smear.” Both sides said in statements Friday that they were glad to put the case behind them.Colorado hands No. 2 UConn second straight loss in Maui
Why Blockchain Will Be More Disruptive in 2025 It was designed to be used in cryptos like Bitcoin , but now, blockchain is ready on the cusp of revolutionizing a whole range of industries in ways that were never considered possible. Blockchain will be much more disruptive in 2025 purely and simply because businesses and industries across most sectors are embracing it. This technology will be more significant than digital currency by 2025 and will spur radical changes in finance, healthcare supply chain management, and many other sectors. The reasons that make blockchain more disruptive this year will explain why. The core of blockchain technology lies in its decentralized architecture, a stark contrast to traditional systems where central authorities control data. Blockchain's distributed ledger ensures that data records are replicated across multiple locations, rendering it impossible to manipulate the system from a single point. This decentralized environment fosters trust through cryptographic principles, ensuring data integrity and security. By 2025, the global blockchain market is projected to reach $39.7 billion, growing at a CAGR of 69.4% (Source: MarketsandMarkets). As more companies adopt blockchain technology, they will realize that its decentralized nature enhances security, efficiency, and transparency while eliminating the need for intermediaries like banks and insurance companies. This shift is expected to decrease costs by up to 30%, accelerate transaction speeds by 50%, and minimize fraud risks by 80% (Source: World Economic Forum). Blockchain technology is revolutionizing various industries, extending far beyond its impact on cryptocurrency. By 2025, blockchain is expected to be vital in transforming the financial system, enabling faster, cheaper, and safer transactions. According to a report by Accenture, blockchain-based systems can reduce transaction costs by up to 80% and increase transaction speed by up to 90% (Source: Accenture). Moreover, blockchain will continue to disrupt traditional payment systems, including peer-to-peer transactions, eliminating the need for intermediaries. Cross-border payments, which currently take an average of 3-5 days and incur high fees, will become near-instant and cost-effective, with blockchain-based systems projected to save up to $20 billion in transaction costs by 2025 (Source: Juniper Research). Additionally, blockchain's transparent nature will help combat money laundering and fraudulent activities, with the global anti-money laundering (AML) market expected to reach $1.4 billion by 2025, driven in part by blockchain adoption (Source: MarketsandMarkets). Smart contracts will be everywhere by 2025 because they automatically execute and enforce the terms of a contract. Self-executing contracts mean faster, more secure agreements between parties without the need for intermediaries like lawyers or notaries. It will transform industries that are based on contracts: real estate , insurance, and even employment agreements. The health industry is well-positioned to adopt blockchain technology, as it holds vast amounts of sensitive patient data across various systems. By 2025, blockchain is expected to facilitate a secure and centralized environment for managing health records among different authorized parties, ultimately enhancing patient care while reducing administrative burdens. Blockchain's immutable ledger ensures that patients' medical records remain unaltered and protected from tampering, which significantly decreases the likelihood of data breaches. This enhances patients' control over their health information and fosters trust in healthcare providers. Additionally, implementing blockchain in pharmaceutical supply chains will improve transparency and help eliminate counterfeit drugs from the market, thereby enhancing drug safety. Moreover, blockchain’s ability to track the origin of drugs and medical equipment will help minimize fraud and counterfeiting, which are prevalent issues in the industry. Over time, healthcare providers will likely begin integrating blockchain solutions into their daily operations, leading to a more efficient, secure, and cost-effective system. One of the most promising applications of blockchain technology is in supply chain management. The sectors most impacted will be manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics, as blockchain will provide end-to-end visibility throughout these supply chains. By 2025, companies will be able to fully track the journey of goods from their origin to their final destination using blockchain. The immutable ledger of blockchain will simplify the verification of product authenticity, significantly reducing the risk of counterfeit goods. This is particularly beneficial for industries such as luxury goods, pharmaceuticals, and food, where it is crucial to ensure that products are genuine and safe. Consumers will also benefit from increased transparency , allowing them to trace the origins of the products they purchase and confirm that they adhere to ethical and sustainability standards. Additionally, blockchain technology will enhance the efficiency of supply chains by minimizing paperwork and administrative tasks. Smart contracts will automate transactions between suppliers, significantly reducing delays and improving overall efficiency. The tracking capabilities of blockchain will also help businesses quickly respond to changes in the market, further reducing potential issues. Blockchain's impact will extend beyond finance, revolutionizing sectors like education, voting systems, and entertainment by 2025. In education, blockchain will enable the secure and transparent verification of academic credentials, making it easier for employers to confirm qualifications. This is particularly significant, given that the global education technology market is projected to reach $252 billion by 2026, with blockchain-based solutions expected to play a key role in enhancing credential verification and authentication (Source: MarketsandMarkets). In voting systems, blockchain technology will provide a transparent, secure, and auditable way to conduct elections, reducing the risk of fraud and increasing voter trust. According to a report by West Virginia University, blockchain-based voting systems can reduce election costs by up to 90% and increase voting participation by up to 20% (Source: West Virginia University). The entertainment industry will also undergo significant disruption, as blockchain enables direct connections between content creators and audiences, cutting out intermediaries and ensuring fairer revenue distribution. The global digital entertainment market is expected to reach $4.8 trillion by 2025, with blockchain-based platforms poised to capture a significant share of this growing market (Source: PwC). Blockchain technology holds significant potential and, over time, is expected to greatly disrupt various industries. By 2025, it is predicted that blockchain will transform business practices by providing safer and more transparent systems, as well as opening new opportunities in nearly every sector. The ongoing innovation in blockchain technology suggests that the next few years will be transformative. Those who embrace these advancements will be well-positioned for success in a rapidly changing world.None

Right back to the 1936 abdication crisis, through to Megxit, there’s always a curveball. This year, we had two in the space of 90 minutes. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today It was a cold January afternoon. I’d just returned from covering the accession of King Frederick and Queen Mary in Copenhagen, when the email landed from Kensington Palace: The Princess of Wales was in hospital. Then, before we’d even had a chance to get to the London Clinic in Central London, another email, this time from Buckingham Palace: The King is heading into hospital (the same hospital!) to treat an enlarged prostate. Both, independently were huge stories, but they happened on the one afternoon, and would go on to shape the year for the Royals. Kate has been largely absent after it later emerged she was being treated for cancer. That news was only revealed after the Princess became the victim of a vicious online rumour cycle that suggested a range of theories — from her untimely death to problems with the Royal marriage — in a terrible period of messaging mismanagement by the Kensington Palace Press Office. The King, even at 75 years of age, has been able to undergo treatment, and maintain a remarkable schedule, including their Majesties’ successful tour of Australia. Buckingham Palace, while always refusing to say what sort of cancer the King is suffering from, has managed to make it seem as if we know more than we do. His Majesty has undergone weekly treatments, while still carrying out the important constitutional functions of state. The monarch and his daughter-in-law are said to share a special bond. That bond has grown tighter this year as both have faced similar battles. And in 2025, we’re bound to face even more drama from the Windsors. Earlier, Sheffield United surrendered their lead at the top after a 2-0 home loss to fellow promotion-rivals Burnley. Josh Brownhill (43rd) and Zian Flemming (53rd) scored to shock the Blades on Thursday, with Socceroos and Sheffield central defender Harry Souttar also copping a booking. Piroe, the Whites' leading marksman, struck either side of half-time to move Leeds to the summit of the table on goal difference. The win was Leeds' seventh in their last nine games overall, but just their second in their last eight away matches. Sunderland's hopes of maintaining the pressure on the sides above them were hit by a last-gasp equaliser by Harry Leonard for Blackburn at Ewood Park. Two swift second-half goals from Chris Rigg and Wilson Isidor had wiped out Yuki Ohashi's early opener and looked set to win it for the Black Cats until Leonard fired home in the 90th minute. Sheffield Wednesday surged back from a 3-0 half-time deficit to snatch a point in a 3-3 draw with 10-man Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. A Finn Azaz double capped a brilliant first half display by Boro after Ben Doak's opener, but second-half strikes from Svante Ingelsson, Josh Windass and Yan Valery sealed the comeback by the hour mark while the hosts had Rav van den Berg sent off. Derby beat managerless West Brom 2-1 as Mason Holgate's own goal proved decisive. Jerry Yates fired the Rams in front and Holgate deflected in Kayden Jackson's effort, with Grady Diangana's goal mere consolation for an Albion team under the temporary stewardship of Chris Brunt after Carlos Corberan's departure for Valencia. Frank Lampard got one over his old England teammate Wayne Rooney as rock-bottom Plymouth were thumped 4-0 at Coventry. All the Sky Blues' goals came in the first half from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Ephron Mason-Clark and a Josh Eccles double, while Argyle had Callum Wright sent off three minutes from time. Gary Rowett got his reign as Oxford boss off to a bright start as goals from Mark Harris, Ciaron Brown and Przemyslaw Placheta saw them cling on for a 3-2 win over Cardiff, while Rocco Vata scored deep into injury time to claim a 2-1 win for Watford against Portsmouth at Vicarage Road. Liam Cullen's double sent Swansea on their way to a 3-0 win over QPR and first half goals from Emiliano Marcondes and Oscar Schwartau were enough for Norwich to see off Millwall at Carrow Road. Brad Potts scored the only goal in Preston's 1-0 win over Hull and Scott Twine did likewise as Bristol City beat Luton by the same score.
The Chargers have made a few roster moves in advance of Monday night’s matchup with the Ravens. Los Angeles announced defensive back Deane Leonard has been activated from injured reserve and cornerback Eli Apple has been signed to the 53-man roster off the club’s practice squad. As corresponding moves, Los Angeles waived safety AJ Finley and placed tight end Hayden Hurst on IR. Leonard has appeared in four games this year, mainly playing special teams. Apple has appeared in three games this year, playing 47 defensive snaps and 13 special teams snaps. He’s recorded one pass defensed and a pair of tackles. Additionally, Los Angeles has elevated safety Tony Jefferson and outside linebacker Caleb Murphy from the practice squad to the gameday roster.
BEIRUT (AP) — Israel’s military launched airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday, unleashing explosions throughout the country and killing at least 12 while Israeli leaders appeared to be closing in on a negotiated ceasefire with the Hezbollah militant group. Israeli strikes hit commercial and residential buildings in Beirut as well as in the port city of Tyre. Military officials said they targeted areas known as Hezbollah strongholds. They issued evacuation orders for Beirut’s southern suburbs, and strikes landed across the city, including meters from a Lebanese police base and the city’s largest public park. The barrage came as officials indicated they were nearing agreement on a ceasefire, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Security Cabinet prepared to discuss an offer on the table. Airstrikes kill at least 12 Massive explosions lit up Lebanon’s skies with flashes of orange, sending towering plumes of smoke into the air as Israeli airstrikes pounded Beirut’s southern suburbs Monday. The blasts damaged buildings and left shattered glass and debris scattered across nearby streets. No casualties were reported after many residents fled the targeted sites. Some of the strikes landed close to central Beirut and near Christian neighborhoods and other targets where Israel had issued evacuation warnings, including in Tyre and Nabatieh province. Israeli airstrikes also hit the northeast Baalbek-Hermel region without warning. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Monday that at least 12 people were killed in the strikes in the Tyre province, adding to the more than 3,700 people in Lebanon who have been killed since Israel launched its invasion two months ago. Many of those killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hezbollah have been , and health officials said some of the recovered bodies were so severely damaged that DNA testing would be required to confirm their identities. Israel says it has killed more than 2,000 Hezbollah members. Lebanon’s Health Ministry says the war has displaced 1.2 million people. The latest round of airstrikes came weeks after Israeli ground forces invaded southern Lebanon in early October, meeting heavy resistance in a narrow strip of land along the border. The military had previously exchanged attacks across the border with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group that began firing rockets into Israel the day after the war in Gaza began last year. Lebanese politicians have decried the ongoing airstrikes and said they are impeding U.S.-led ceasefire negotiations. The country’s deputy parliament speaker accused Israel of ramping up its bombardment in order to pressure Lebanon to make concessions in indirect ceasefire negotiations with Hezbollah. Elias Bousaab, an ally of the militant group, said Monday that the pressure has increased because “we are close to the hour that is decisive regarding reaching a ceasefire.” Hopes grow for a ceasefire Israeli officials voiced similar optimism Monday about prospects for a ceasefire. Mike Herzog, the country’s ambassador to Washington, earlier in the day told Israeli Army Radio that several points had yet to be finalized. Though any deal would require agreement from the government, Herzog said Israel and Hezbollah were “close to a deal.” “It can happen within days,” he said. Israeli officials have said the sides are close to an agreement that would include withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and a pullback of Hezbollah fighters from the Israeli border. But several sticking points remain. Two Israeli officials told The Associated Press that Netanyahu’s security Cabinet had scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, but they said it remained unclear whether the Cabinet would vote to approve the deal. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations. Danny Danon, Israel’s U.N. ambassador, told reporters Monday that he expected a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah to have stages and to be discussed by leaders Monday or Tuesday. Still, he warned, “it’s not going to happen overnight.” After previous hopes for a ceasefire were dashed, U.S. officials cautioned that negotiations were not yet complete and noted that there could be last-minute hitches that either delay or destroy an agreement. “Nothing is done until everything is done,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Monday. The proposal under discussion to end the fighting calls for an initial two-month ceasefire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. The withdrawals would be accompanied by an influx of thousands more Lebanese army troops, who have been in the war, to patrol the border area along with an existing . Western diplomats and Israeli officials said Israel is demanding the right to strike in Lebanon if it believes Hezbollah is violating the terms. The Lebanese government has said that such an arrangement would authorize violations of the country’s sovereignty. A ceasefire could mark a step toward ending the regionwide war that ballooned after Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, . The lack of a ceasefire has emerged as a political liability for Israeli leaders including Netanyahu, particularly while 60,000 Israelis remain away from their homes in the country’s north after more than a year of cross-border violence. Hezbollah rockets have reached as far south into Israel as Tel Aviv. At least 75 people have been killed, more than half of them civilians. More than 50 Israeli soldiers died fighting in the ground offensive in Lebanon. The Israeli military said about 250 projectiles were fired Sunday, with some intercepted. A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, the strongest of , is expected to significantly calm regional tensions that have led to fears of a direct, all-out war between Israel and Iran. It’s not clear how the ceasefire will affect the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Hezbollah had long insisted that it would not agree to a ceasefire until the war in Gaza ends, but it dropped that condition. While the proposal is expected to be approved if Netanyahu brings it to a vote in his security Cabinet, one hard-line member, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, said he would oppose it. He said on X that a deal with Lebanon would be a “big mistake” and a “missed historic opportunity to eradicate Hezbollah.” If the ceasefire talks fail, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said, “it will mean more destruction and more and more animosity and more dehumanization and more hatred and more bitterness.” Speaking at a G7 meeting in Fiuggi, Italy, the last summit of its kind before U.S. President Joe Biden leaves office, Safadi said such a failure “will doom the future of the region to more conflict and more killing and more destruction.” ___ Federman reported from Jerusalem and Metz from Rabat, Morocco. California saw its biggest increase in registered lobbyists last session since at least 2011, when a change in the law caused the number to more than double. There was a roughly 10% increase in the number of lobbyists who registered for the 2023-24 session compared to the previous one — for a record of 3,245 people, according to the Secretary of State’s office. What’s behind the jump? Longtime lobbyist Chris Micheli sees it as the result of high turnover in the Legislature — leading to an “exodus of legislative staff” who went into advocacy. In what was dubbed the Great Resignation of 2022, for example, 26 members opted out of seeking re-election , in addition to the seven who reached term limits. Micheli said he has also seen a rise in state agency rule-making, which motivates those in support of or against regulations to lobby: “Some of these regulatory bodies, like the Air Resources Board — the number of regulations that they’re undertaking and their significance has been growing in recent years.” Meanwhile, the number of legislative staff has shifted only slightly since the mid-1990s, according to data from the National Conference of State Legislatures. The staff count can impact how much time members have to write and research legislation. The increase in lobbyists means there’s now at least one lobbyist for every staff member, compared to two staffers per lobbyist back in 1995, the earliest data available from the Secretary of State’s office. RELATED COVERAGE Tennessee governor repays trip after ethics panel finds a group shouldn’t have covered it Trump’s incoming chief of staff is a former lobbyist. She’ll face a raft of special interests This Montana Senate candidate said his opponent ate ‘lobbyist steak.’ But he lobbied—with steak “The fact that the number of registered lobbyists has risen so high and outstrips the number of actual staffers that legislators have to help them with people’s work shows how skewed our system has become towards the interests of wealthy interests that also dominate campaign spending, rather than regular people,” emailed Trent Lange, executive director of California Clean Money Campaign — an advocacy group that aims to combat the influence of money on politics. Lobbyists are required to register with the Secretary of State’s office, and report on their activities each quarter. That’s according to the state’s Political Reform Act , which passed in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal in 1974 in an effort to combat political corruption. The law defines lobbyists as those who are paid to influence legislation or regulation through direct communication with lawmakers, outside of public comments. They can be hired as contractors by companies, or work to influence policy as an employee, although those who spend less than one-third of their time lobbying don’t have to register. Lawmakers and those who work for state agencies legally must wait one year after leaving state jobs before working as lobbyists. Legislative staff do not have that requirement. The recent jump in new lobbyists was the highest since 2011 , when a law signed by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger went into effect requiring placement agents — financial officers who solicit investments from the state workers’ and teachers’ retirement funds — to register as lobbyists. The law nearly doubled the number of registered lobbyists, from 1,237 for the two-year session ending in 2010 to 2,353 in 2012. The second highest bump came in the session that ended in 2020, with 257 more registered lobbyists compared to the session before, according to the Secretary of State’s office. The rise in the number of lobbyists coincides with an uptick in money spent on lobbying, with industry and advocacy groups spending record amounts each year since 2022 . Spending to lobby California legislators hit nearly $420 million in just the first nine months of 2024, compared to $484 million in all of 2023 and $443 million in the entirety of 2022. Included in the recent boost: a summer lobbying blitz by Google to influence whether it would have to pay news outlets for publishing their content. Jonathan Mehta Stein, executive director of the good governmental advocacy group California Common Cause, labeled it “absolutely wild” that nearly $1 billion was spent on lobbying last session. “Sometimes people in the capitol community,” he said, “lose sight of how staggering it would be to their constituents if they knew how much money is spent to, in many cases, divert policy decisions away from the reason everyone originally went to Sacramento, which is to serve the public interest without fear or favor.” ___ Jeremia Kimelman contributed to this story. ___ This story was originally published by CalMatters and distributed through a partnership with The Associated Press.

WASHINGTON — The House passed a $895 billion measure Wednesday that authorizes a 1% increase in defense spending this fiscal year and would give a double-digit pay raise to about half of the enlisted service members in the military. The bill is traditionally strongly bipartisan, but some Democratic lawmakers opposed the inclusion of a ban on transgender medical treatments for children of military members if such treatment could result in sterilization. The bill passed by a vote of 281-140 and next moves to the Senate, where lawmakers sought a bigger boost in defense spending than the current measure allows. Lawmakers are touting the bill's 14.5% pay raise for junior enlisted service members and a 4.5% increase for others as key to improving the quality of life for those serving in the U.S. military. Those serving as junior enlisted personnel are in pay grades that generally track with their first enlistment term. Lawmakers said service member pay failed to remain competitive with the private sector, forcing many military families to rely on food banks and government assistance programs to put food on the table. The bill also provides significant new resources for child care and housing. "No service member should have to live in squalid conditions and no military family should have to rely on food stamps to feed their children, but that's exactly what many of our service members are experiencing, especially the junior enlisted," said Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. "This bill goes a long way to fixing that." The bill sets key Pentagon policy that lawmakers will attempt to fund through a follow-up appropriations bill. The overall spending tracks the numbers established in a 2023 agreement that then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., reached with President Joe Biden to increase the nation's borrowing authority and avoid a federal default in exchange for spending restraints. Many senators wanted to increase defense spending about $25 billion above what was called for in that agreement, but those efforts failed. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who is expected to serve as the next chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the overall spending level was a "tremendous loss for our national defense," though he agreed with many provisions in the bill. "We need to make a generational investment to deter the Axis of Aggressors. I will not cease work with my congressional colleagues, the Trump administration, and others until we achieve it," Wicker said. House Republicans don't want to go above the McCarthy-Biden agreement for defense spending and are looking to go way below it for many nondefense programs. They are also focused on cultural issues. The bill prohibits funding for teaching critical race theory in the military and prohibits TRICARE health plans from covering gender dysphoria treatment for children under 18 if that treatment could result in sterilization. Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the ranking Democratic member of the House Armed Services Committee, said minors dealing with gender dysphoria is a "very real problem." He said the treatments available, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy, proved effective at helping young people dealing with suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression. "These treatments changed their lives and in many cases saved their lives," Smith said. "And in this bill, we decided we're going to bar service members' children from having access to that." Smith said the number of minors in service member families receiving transgender medical care extends into the thousands. He could have supported a study asking medical experts to determine whether such treatments are too often used, but a ban on health insurance coverage went too far. He said Speaker Mike Johnson's office insisted on the ban and said the provision "taints an otherwise excellent piece of legislation." Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, called the ban a step in the right direction, saying, "I think these questions need to be pulled out of the debate of defense, so we can get back to the business of defending the United States of America without having to deal with social engineering debates." Smith said he agrees with Roy that lawmakers should be focused on the military and not on cultural conflicts, "and yet, here it is in this bill." Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, said his team did not tell Democrats how to vote on the bill. "There's a lot of positive things in the National Defense Authorization Act that were negotiated in a bipartisan way, and there are some troubling provisions in a few areas as well," Jeffries said. The defense policy bill also looks to strengthen deterrence against China. It calls for investing $15.6 billion to build military capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region. The Biden administration requested about $10 billion. On Israel, the bill, among other things, includes an expansion of U.S. joint military exercises with Israel and a prohibition on the Pentagon citing casualty data from Hamas. The defense policy bill is one of the final measures that lawmakers view as a must-pass before making way for a new Congress in January.

Chandigarh: As the Union home ministry on Friday said that last rites of the former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will be conducted at the Nigambodh Ghat crematorium on Saturday, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "intervene personally to change this deplorable decision" of the Union govt. In a post on X, Badal said, "Shocking and unbelievable! It is condemnable in the extreme that Union Govt has declined the request of Dr Manmohan Singh Ji's family for performing the funeral and last rites of the highly distinguished leader at a place where an appropriate and historic memorial may be built to commemorate his unparalleled services to the nation. This place should be Raj Ghat. This will be in keeping with the settled practice and tradition followed in the past." He added, "It is inexplicable why the govt is showing such disrespect to the great leader who was the only member of the Sikh community to rise to become the Prime Minister." The Akali Dal leader added, "As of now, the cremation is slated to be performed at the common cremation ground at Nigambodh Ghat. I am unable to believe that the BJP govt's bias would go to such extremes in utter disregard of the towering global stature which Dr Manmohan Singh ji enjoyed and will always enjoy. Dr Manmohan Singh took the country to great international heights. Our political differences with the Congress apart, we have always held Dr Manmohan Singh in the highest esteem as he transcends politics and political affiliations. He belongs to the entire nation." "Dr Sahib showed great sensitivity and compassion in his dealings with Shiromani Akali Dal over Sikh and Punjab issues. I urge PM @narendramodi Ji to intervene personally to change this deplorable decision of the govt." Three senior leaders of the SAD will attend the cremation of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh at Delhi on Saturday. In a post on X, SAD leader and former minister Daljit Singh Cheema said he, SAD working president Balwinder Singh Bhunder and former cabinet minister Hira Singh Gabria would attend the cremation. Leader of the opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Partap Singh Bajwa also requested Prime Minister Modi to honour Dr Singh with a memorial befitting his immense contribution to the nation. In a post on X, Bajwa said, "I urge Prime Minister @narendramodi to honour Dr Manmohan Singh, one of the most towering Sikhs of modern times, with a memorial befitting his immense contributions to our nation. Rising from humble beginnings in a historic state, representing a community that has always stood steadfast for India's unity and progress, Dr. Singh's life is a testament to intellect, integrity, and selfless service." He added, "Punjabis across faiths and political lines unite in their heartfelt plea to recognize this son of Punjab, who played an instrumental role in shaping India's destiny, with the respect he deserves. His cremation should take place at a location designated for the construction of his memorial ensuring his legacy is honoured for generations to come." Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a clear message to the West following the successful Oreshnik missile launch, Pedro Guanaes Netto, French politician and the host of Fréquence Populaire Média, told Sputnik Africa. He analyzed that the Oreshnik ballistic missile launch demonstrates Russia's capacity for innovation and missile production, even during wartime. This contrasts with Ukraine's reliance on dwindling stocks of external military supplies, the politician stressed. By authorizing the use of ATACMS and Storm Shadow to strike Russia, the West "gave Putin carte blanche to be able to revise his doctrine since it becomes a response to a fact and no longer a unilateral action by Russia," Netto noted. He also highlighted the increasing difficulty Western elites face in maintaining their narrative of a weakened Russia destined to lose the conflict. He cited recent polls indicating growing war-weariness among Ukrainians, a shift from earlier unwavering resolve.Uber Can Provide Decent Value To Investors With A Long-Term View
WASHINGTON — For years, Pat Verhaeghe didn’t think highly of Donald Trump as a leader. Then Verhaeghe began seeing more of Trump’s campaign speeches online and his appearances at sporting events. There was even the former president’s pairing with Bryson DeChambeau as part of the pro golfer’s YouTube channel series to shoot an under-50 round of golf while engaging in chitchat with his partner. “I regret saying this, but a while ago I thought he was an idiot and that he wouldn’t be a good president,” said the 18-year-old first-time voter. “I think he’s a great guy now.” Verhaeghe isn’t alone among his friends in suburban Detroit or young men across America. Although much of the electorate shifted right to varying degrees in 2024, young men were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, while Democrat Joe Biden had won a similar share of this group four years earlier. White men under 30 were solidly in Trump’s camp this year — about 6 in 10 voted for Trump — while young Latino men were split between the two candidates. Most Black men under 30 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, but about one-third were behind Trump. Young Latino men’s views of the Democratic Party were much more negative than in 2020, while young Black men’s views of the party didn’t really move. About 6 in 10 Latino men under 30 had a somewhat or very favorable view of the Democrats in 2020, which fell to about 4 in 10 this year. On the other hand, about two-thirds of young Black men had a favorable view of the Democrats this year, which was almost identical to how they saw the party four years ago. “Young Hispanic men, and really young men in general, they want to feel valued,” said Rafael Struve, deputy communications director for Bienvenido, a conservative group that focused on reaching young Hispanic voters for Republicans this year. “They’re looking for someone who fights for them, who sees their potential and not just their struggles.” Struve cited the attempted assassination of Trump during a July rally in Pennsylvania as one of the catalyzing moments for Trump’s image among many young men. Trump, Struve said, was also able to reach young men more effectively by focusing on nontraditional platforms like podcasts and digital media outlets. “Getting to hear from Trump directly, I think, really made all the difference,” Struve said of the former president’s appearances on digital media platforms and media catering to Latino communities, like town halls and business roundtables Trump attended in Las Vegas and Miami. Not only did Trump spend three hours on Joe Rogan’s chart-topping podcast, but he took up DeChambeau’s “Break 50” challenge for the golfer’s more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers. Trump already had an edge among young white men four years ago, although he widened the gap this year. About half of white men under 30 supported Trump in 2020, and slightly less than half supported Biden. Trump’s gains among young Latino and Black men were bigger. His support among both groups increased by about 20 percentage points, according to AP VoteCast — and their feelings toward Trump got warmer, too. It wasn’t just Trump. The share of young men who identified as Republicans in 2024 rose as well, mostly aligning with support for Trump across all three groups. “What is most alarming to me is that the election is clear that America has shifted right by a lot,” said William He, founder of Dream For America, a liberal group that works to turn out young voters and supported Harris’ presidential bid. With his bombastic demeanor and a policy agenda centered on a more macho understanding of culture, Trump framed much of his campaign as a pitch to men who felt scorned by the country’s economy, culture and political system. Young women also slightly swung toward the former president, though not to the degree of their male counterparts. It’s unclear how many men simply did not vote this year. But there’s no doubt the last four years brought changes in youth culture and how political campaigns set out to reach younger voters. Democrat Kamala Harris’ campaign rolled out policy agendas tailored to Black and Latino men, and the campaign enlisted a range of leaders in Black and Hispanic communities to make the case for the vice president. Her campaign began with a flurry of enthusiasm from many young voters, epitomized in memes and the campaign’s embrace of pop culture trends like the pop star Charli XCX’s “brat” aesthetic. Democrats hoped to channel that energy into their youth voter mobilization efforts. “I think most young voters just didn’t hear the message,” said Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, a liberal group that engages younger voters. Mayer said the Harris campaign’s pitch to the country was “largely convoluted” and centered on economic messaging that he said wasn’t easily conveyed to younger voters who were not already coming to political media. “And I think that the policies themselves were also very narrow and targeted when what we really needed was a simple, bold economic vision,” said Mayer. Trump also embraced pop culture by appearing at UFC fights, football games and appearing alongside comedians, music stars and social media influencers. His strategists believed that the former president’s ability to grab attention and make his remarks go viral did more for the campaign than paid advertisements or traditional media appearances. Trump’s campaign also heavily cultivated networks of online conservative platforms and personalities supportive of him while also engaging a broader universe of podcasts, streaming sites, digital media channels and meme pages open to hearing him. “The right has been wildly successful in infiltrating youth political culture online and on campus in the last couple of years, thus radicalizing young people towards extremism,” said He, who cited conservative activist groups like Turning Point USA as having an outsize impact in online discourse. “And Democrats have been running campaigns in a very old fashioned way. The battleground these days is cultural and increasingly on the internet.” Republicans may lose their broad support if they don’t deliver on improving Americans’ lives, Struve cautioned. Young men, especially, may drift from the party in a post-Trump era if the party loses the president-elect’s authenticity and bravado. Bienvenido, for one group, will double down in the coming years to solidify and accelerate the voting pattern shifts seen this year, Struve said. “We don’t want this to be a one and done thing,” he said. Associated Press writer Joey Cappelletti in Lansing, Michigan, and AP polling editor Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux contributed to this report.Bitcoin’s rally is making some investors nervous about the stock market
The U.S. Army's Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, in collaboration with the U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Programs, recently completed a successful end-to-end flight test of a conventional hypersonic missile from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. "This test builds on several flight tests in which the Common Hypersonic Glide Body achieved hypersonic speed at target distances and demonstrates that we can put this capability in the hands of the warfighter," said Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth. This is the second successful end-to-end flight test of the All Up Round (AUR) this year and was the first live-fire event for the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon system using a Battery Operations Center and a Transporter Erector Launcher. "This test marks an important milestone in the development of one of our most advanced weapons systems. As we approach the first delivery of this capability to our Army partners, we will continue to press forward to integrate Conventional Prompt Strike into our Navy surface and subsurface ships to help ensure we remain the world's preeminent fighting force," said Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro. Information gathered from this test will support the first Army Operational Deployment of the common hypersonic AUR, as well as a Navy sea-based fielding. "This test is a demonstration of the successful Navy and Army partnership that has allowed us to develop a transformational hypersonic weapon system that will deliver unmatched capability to meet joint warfighting needs," said Vice Adm. Johnny R. Wolfe Jr, Director, Navy's Strategic Systems Programs, which is the lead designer of the common hypersonic missile. The Services common hypersonic AUR supports the National Defense Strategy and will provide combatant commanders with diverse capabilities to sustain and strengthen integrated deterrence and to build enduring advantages for the Joint Force. Hypersonic systems – capable of flying at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound (Mach 5) –provide a combination of speed, range, maneuverability, and altitude that enables highly survivable and rapid defeat of time-critical and heavily-defended targets. "The responsiveness, maneuverability and survivability of hypersonic weapons is unmatched by traditional strike capabilities for precision targeting, especially in anti-access/area denial environments," said Lt. Gen. Robert A. Rasch, Director of Hypersonics, Directed Energy, Space and Rapid Acquisitions for RCCTO. The U.S. Army RCCTO and U.S. Navy SSP programs are partnered to rapidly field land and sea variants of a hypersonic weapon system that will meet critical joint warfighting needs. The use of a common hypersonic missile and joint test opportunities allow the Services to pursue a more aggressive timeline for delivery and realize cost savings. The collaboration between RCCTO and SSP enables the Services to stay ahead of emerging threats and maintain a decisive advantage on the battlefield.Repealing no-fault divorce has so far stalled across the US. Robby Carmody went 5 of 7 from the field (4 for 6 from 3-point range) to add 14 points. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Married couples across the U.S. have had access to no-fault divorce for more than 50 years, an option many call crucial to supporting domestic abuse victims and key to preventing already crowded family courts from drowning in complicated divorce proceedings. But some advocates for women worried as old comments from now Vice President-elect JD Vance circulated during the presidential campaign opposing no-fault divorce. After President-elect Donald Trump and Vance won the election, warnings began popping up on social media urging women who might be considering divorce to "pull the trigger" while they still could. Some attorneys posted saying they saw a spike in calls from women seeking divorce consultations. Donald and Ivana Trump pose in May 1988 outside the Federal Courthouse in New York after she was sworn in as a United States citizen. Trump — who is twice-divorced — hasn't championed overhauling the country's divorce laws, but in 2021 Vance lamented that divorce is too easily accessible, as have conservative podcasters and others. "We've run this experiment in real time and what we have is a lot of very, very real family dysfunction that's making our kids unhappy," Vance said during a speech at a Christian high school in California, where he criticized people being able to "shift spouses like they change their underwear." Marriage rates held steady but divorce rates of women age 15 and older declined from 2012 to 2022, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released in October. Despite concerns, even those who want to make divorces harder to get say they don't expect big, swift changes. There is not a national coordinated effort underway. States determine their own divorce laws, so national leaders can't directly change policy. "Even in some of the so-called red states, it hasn't gotten anywhere," said Beverly Willett, co-chair of the Coalition for Divorce Reform, whose group unsuccessfully attempted to convince states to repeal their no-fault divorce laws. A couple exchanges wedding bands Oct. 11, 2018, at City Hall in Philadelphia. Mark A. Smith, a political science professor at the University of Washington, said while many Americans became accustomed to no-fault divorce being an option, Vance's previous comments on making it more difficult to separate from a spouse could help jump-start that effort. "Even though he's not directly proposing a policy, it's a topic that hasn't gotten a ton of discussion in the last 15 years," Smith said. "And so to have a national profile politician talk that way is noteworthy." Meanwhile, Republican Party platforms in Texas and Nebraska were amended in 2022 to call for the removal of no-fault divorce. Louisiana's Republican Party considered something similar this year but declined to do so. A handful of proposals were introduced in conservative-led statehouses over the years, but all immediately stalled after they were filed. In January, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Dusty Deevers introduced legislation that would have removed married couples from filing for divorce on the grounds of incompatibility. Deevers backed the bill after writing a piece declaring no-fault divorce was an "abolition of marital obligation." Sen. JD Vance smiles as his wife Usha Vance applauds Nov. 6 at an election-night watch party at the Palm Beach Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. Similarly, in South Carolina, two Republican lawmakers in 2023 filed a bill that would have required both spouses to file for a no-fault divorce application rather than just one. In South Dakota, a Republican lawmaker attempted to remove irreconcilable difference as grounds for divorce since 2020. None of the sponsors of these bills responded to interview requests from The Associated Press. All are members of their state's conservative Freedom Caucus. Nevertheless, some Democratic lawmakers say they remain worried about the future of no-fault divorce. They point to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the constitutional right to abortion in 2022 as an example of a long-accepted option that was revoked through a decades-long effort. "When you choose to be silent, you allow for this to creep in," said Democratic South Dakota Rep. Linda Duba. "These are the bills that gain a foothold because you choose to be silent." Before California became the first state to adopt a no-fault divorce option in 1969, married couples had to prove their spouse violated one of the approved "faults" outlined in their state's divorce law or risk a judge denying their divorce, said Joanna Grossman, a law professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Qualified reasons varied from state to state, but largely included infidelity, incarceration or abandonment. Donald and Marla Trump wave to photographers Dec. 20, 1993, as they enter their wedding reception in New York's Plaza Hotel. The system was a particular burden on domestic violence victims, who are often women who could be stuck in dangerous marriages while they try to prove their partner's abuse in court through expensive and lengthy legal proceedings. "If there was any evidence that the couple both wanted to get divorced that was supposed to be denied because divorce was not something you got because you wanted it, it was something you got because you've been wronged in a way that the state thought was significant," Grossman said. To date, every state in the U.S. adopted a no-fault divorce option. However, 33 states still have a list of approved "faults" to file as grounds for divorce — ranging from adultery to felony conviction. In 17 states, married people only have the option of choosing no-fault divorce to end their marriages. The link between rates of divorce and age at first marriage has been borne out over time, but it also explains geographic differences in rates of divorce. Today, most of the states with the lowest rates of divorce are also those with a higher median age for marriage. States like New Jersey, New York, California, and Massachusetts all stand out for having fewer than 10% of adults divorced and an age at first marriage above 30. One exception to this is Utah, which has the lowest overall median age for first marriage at 25.5 but also the third-lowest share of divorced adults at 9%, likely due in part to the state’s strong religious ties to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . In contrast, Maine and Nevada lead all states in the share of the population currently divorced at 13.9% and 13.8%, respectively. And at the local level, many of the cities with the highest levels of divorce are found in Florida, Appalachia, and the Southwest. The data used in this analysis is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 American Community Survey . To determine the most divorced locations, researchers at ChamberOfCommerce.org calculated the percentage of adults currently divorced. In the event of a tie, the location with the higher percentage of adults currently separated was ranked higher. To improve relevance, only cities with at least 100,000 residents were included. Additionally, cities were grouped into cohorts based on population size: small (100,000–149,999), midsize (150,000–349,999), and large (350,000 or more). Dobbins Dobbins is having a great season for the Chargers and is in the running for NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Being placed on injured reserve will likely take him out of consideration for the award, but the Chargers don't want to risk putting him out there until he is 100 percent healthy. The Chargers have been able to throw the ball quite well in recent weeks and feel the duo of Edwards and Vidal can keep them afloat and still in the playoff race, ready for Dobbins to come back at full speed. Watson has been limited to just 19 games in three seasons because of an NFL suspension and injuries with the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract in 2022. The restructuring allows the team to spread out the salary-cap hit after the 2026 season, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team does not disclose contract specifics. The 29-year-old Watson has two years remaining on his contract with an average of $46 million a year, and with a salary-cap hit of $72.9 million in those seasons. The agreement to restructure his deal will not preclude the Browns from adding talent at the quarterback position in 2025, the person said. Watson played in only seven games this season before suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. He’s 9-10 as a starter with Cleveland. The Browns (3-12) have been a major disappointment after making it to the playoffs a year ago behind Joe Flacco, who was signed as a free agent after Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. While the team hasn’t disclosed its plans at quarterback, it’s assumed Watson will be in the mix to be the starter next season. It’s also possible the Browns will draft a quarterback in the first round. The team hasn’t had a first-round pick the past three years after trading three to the Houston Texans to acquire Watson, who was once considered one of the league’s elite QBs. Watson’s disappointing tenure has been a sore spot with Cleveland fans, who had hoped the team had finally resolved its interminable QB issues when they signed the three-time Pro Bowler three years ago. But it hasn’t worked out, and the major investment in Watson and the salary-cap ramifications of his contract — the largest fully guaranteed deal in league history — have made it difficult for the Browns to upgrade their roster. Watson has shown flashes of being a competent starting quarterback, but there have been just as many moments in which he’s looked hesitant in the pocket or unable to connect with receivers down field. Watson was suspended for the first 11 games of his first season in Cleveland after an independent arbiter ruled he violated the conduct policy after he was accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions. Since having surgery, Watson has been rehabbing his Achilles injury. He has not spoken to reporters for months. On Thursday, he posted a photo of himself on Instagram standing without wearing a walking boot. The caption read: “Back on My Feet! MOREGLORY!” Last week, Browns defensive star Myles Garrett caused a stir by saying he did not want to be part of a rebuild in Cleveland. Garrett also made it clear he wanted to know the team’s offseason plans, including what the Browns intended to do at quarterback. On Friday, Garrett said he had “a few” discussions this week with the team’s front office following his comments. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year didn’t reveal any specifics of the talks. “They just wanted to see where my head was at and what I was thinking and just trying to keep things in house, in house,” he said. Garrett was asked if he got a favorable reaction from teammates. “They want to know what’s coming next as well,” he said. “So I haven’t really heard too many people speak up on whether they liked my comments or not. Everyone’s kind of feeling the same way. But I’m not going to assume and I’ll have my answer at the end of the year.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLHow to watch the 136th Rose Parade on TV, apps or online

The firms are discussing expanding their existing collaboration to include this planned program in which Cantor Fitzgerald would lend dollars to clients who put up bitcoin for collateral, Bloomberg reported Sunday (Nov. 24). Neither Cantor Fitzgerald nor Tether immediately replied to PYMNTS’ request for comment. The two companies already have a custodial relationship in which Cantor Fitzgerald’s custody business holds the U.S. Treasurys that support the value of Tether’s USDT stablecoin, according to the report. The Bloomberg report comes at a time when Cantor Fitzgerald Chairman and CEO Howard Lutnick is co-chair of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team and has been named as Trump’s pick to head the Commerce Department, the report said. Cantor Fitzgerald will start its bitcoin lending project with $2 billion in funding and expects to expand that to tens of billions of dollars, per the report. Tether would likely be one of many financial contributors to the project, which has not yet formally started lending, according to the report. Cantor Fitzgerald announced its plans for a bitcoin financing business in July, saying in a press release that it aims to provide leverage to investors who hold bitcoin and that it will partner with select bitcoin custodians to launch the program. “Cantor Fitzgerald arranges and finances vast amounts of securities and commodities and, as strong supporters of bitcoin, will now build an incredible platform to support bitcoin investors’ financing needs,” Lutnick said in the release. “We are excited to help unlock bitcoin’s full potential and continue bridging the gap between traditional finance and digital assets.” Bitcoin has reached record highs since the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election, with traders expecting the crypto sector to benefit from Trump’s support of cryptocurrencies. That rise was bolstered last week by media reports that Trump’s social media company is considering buying crypto trading firm Bakkt and that Trump was meeting privately with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong to discuss the incoming administration ’s personnel appointments. Tether’s USDT is the largest stablecoin by market cap, PYMNTS reported in October.
Eye on state election, Assam CM expands cabinet with 4 new minsThe last time we heard from JJ McCarthy, he was in the Minnesota Vikings locker room back in early September , telling media members how he was feeling, following a meniscus tear and resulting knee repair surgery that ended his rookie season. At the time, things were good, but his recovery hadn’t even really gotten started yet. In the nearly two months that have passed since McCarthy spoke with media that day, we’ve seen the Vikings future QB1 return to the sideline with his teammates , before he suffered a setback and had to undergo another procedure, (PRP injection) after his knee showed unexpected swelling during rehab. Then, this week, the Minnesota Vikings made it clear that they are keeping all 2025 QB options open, by signing Daniel Jones for a two-plus month trial run, after he was waived by the New York Giants a week earlier. JJ McCarthy injury update So, how is JJ McCarthy doing now, about ? Well, the 21-year-old gave his own update, via the L.A.B. Podcast , hosted by fellow Michigan alum (TE) Jake Butt . During his appearance, McCarthy noted that his knee is “feeling fantastic”, and that his recent PRP injection wasn’t ideal, but that it was “part of the process”. #Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy gives an update on his knee injury and things look “fantastic” “The knee is doing fantastic. It’s on the road the told me it would be on... PRP we got that done... it’s all part of the process.” : The L.A.B. Podcast / YT pic.twitter.com/aD12D4TKuJ “The knee is doing fantastic. It’s on the road that they told me it was going to be on, which is up and down, upside down, sideways, backwards, all the way around. The PRP [injection], got that done. Going in there and having to get cut open wasn’t great. But it’s alright, because it’s all a part of the process and I know I’m in a good spot right now.” It is interesting to hear JJ McCarthy describe his recent knee procedure as being “cut open”, especially after the Minnesota Vikings PR department tried so hard to convinced us that his most recent procedure was non-invasive. What can Minnesota Vikings fans take away from McCarthy’s update? At this point, we are waiting for a timeline update on the 2024 No. 10 overall draft pick . He is still expected to return, at some point before the 2025 season. But will that be this summer, for offseason workouts and minicamp? Or, are we crossing our fingers for a return by training camp... or the first preseason game. I’m not sure the Minnesota Vikings can answer that question, which is why they are so interested in Daniel Jones, who looks like a better bridge option than Sam Darnold, just based on his time before putting on purple. Unfortunately, we only got to see JJ McCarthy play in one mythic exhibition game vs the Las Vegas Raiders, where he completed 11-of-17 passes (65.7%) for 188 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. TORONTO — Canada's main stock index pushed higher to end Monday up almost 150 points on light trading action, while U.S. stock markets also gained ahead of the Christmas break. "Today is a quiet pre-Christmas Day of trading," said Kevin Burkett, a portfolio manager at Victoria, B.C.-based Burkett Asset Management. While markets in both Canada and the U.S. were mild, Burkett suggests watching the markets closely during the holiday season, a contrast to what's typically a sleepy period for markets. "We're continuing to watch markets very closely here because you've got some tectonic plate shifting in terms of the macroeconomic backdrop," he said. "It's all the political conversations both in Canada and in the U.S." Burkett added fiscal policy seems to be disconnected from monetary policy in the post-pandemic period. "The fiscal policy may shift and that shift absolutely has market implications both in the short and long term," he said. The S&P/TSX composite index was up 149.50 points at 24,748.98. Statistics Canada released its latest numbers on Canada's economic growth, up 0.3 per cent in October — driven by the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector. The loonie continued its slide, trading for 69.47 cents US compared with 69.61 cents US on Friday. The telecom sector was the biggest loser at the closing on TSX, which Burkett attributed to "tax loss selling happening at the end of the year." Competition Bureau Canada announced on Monday it was suing Rogers Communications Inc. for allegedly making misleading claims about its infinite wireless plans. The stock price for Rogers, which is hovering near 52-week lows, fell 0.7 per cent on Monday. Meanwhile, BCE was down almost 1.4 per cent and Telus dropped 0.9 per cent. Burkett suggested the day's poor performance among telecom companies was likely tax loss selling since it's almost the end of the year. "It's been a tough year for the communication services sector," he said. South of the border, communications services was the top-performing sector, led by large-cap tech companies. Several big technology companies helped support the gains, including chip companies Nvidia and Broadcom. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 66.69 points at 42,906.95. The S&P 500 index was up 43.22 points at 5,974.07, while the Nasdaq composite was up 192.29 points at 19,764.89. The February crude oil contract was down 22 cents at US$69.24 per barrel and the February natural gas contract was down six cents at US$3.35 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$16.90 at US$2,628.20 an ounce and the March copper contract was down one cent at US$4.09 a pound. Wirex added two new stablecoins to its digital payments platform. The integration of the VNX Euro (VEUR) and VNX Swiss Franc (VCHF) coins allows users to spend these currencies directly through their Wirex cards, the United Kingdom-based company said in a Monday (Dec. 23) press release . “This addition allows our users to effortlessly spend stablecoins in real life, whether for daily purchases, remittances or managing their digital assets,” Wirex co-founder Pavel Matveev said in the release. “At Wirex, our goal is to make digital currencies as convenient and versatile as traditional money, and VEUR and VCHF are another step toward achieving that vision.” The company plans to add more features after launch, including loans and high-yield X-Accounts, both of which are increasing in popularity among Wirex users, according to the release. The loans let users access liquidity without selling underlying digital assets, using digital assets like bitcoin and other digital assets as collateral for loans in stablecoins. X-Accounts allow users to earn yields on their stablecoin balances, “enhancing the overall value proposition of holding VEUR and VCHF within the Wirex ecosystem,” the release said. Wirex’s announcement came in the final days of a pivotal year for cryptocurrency marked by shifts in technology , regulation and market sentiment. “As the sector matured, it experienced transformative changes that bridged gaps between the speculative origins of cryptocurrency and its increasingly utilitarian applications across industries,” PYMNTS wrote this week. For example, holiday moviegoers this year were allowed to buy tickets and concessions at Regal theaters around the United States using the USDC stablecoin . Stablecoins also continued their rise as the backbone of cross-border and enterprise crypto payments and a bridge to the traditional finance world. They allow businesses to bypass traditional correspondent banking networks and settle transactions almost instantaneously . “ Blockchain technology, and public blockchains in particular, are opening up a number of new use cases, one of which is to transfer value — such as remittances — from one country to another,” Raj Dhamodharan , executive vice president of blockchain and digital assets at Mastercard , told PYMNTS in November.

DALLAS (AP) — The championship vision that led Nathan Eovaldi to sign with Texas as a free agent two years ago is the same one that brought him back to the Rangers.

The Red Sox sent four prospects to Chicago in exchange for the 25-year-old left-hander, one of the best young starters in baseball. “There was definitely a lot of relief when it finally came to fruition,” Crochet said via Zoom on Friday. “A lot of people might view the trade as adding some chaos into your life, but for me, it felt like all the chaos was stripped away. Worrying about it for eight months on end, knowing the writing on the wall. It’s nice just being able to put it behind me and look forward to the season.” Advertisement As far back as the trade deadline, the Red Sox had been pursuing Crochet but a deal never materialized at the time. They were far from the only team vying for the lefty, who pitched one of the most dominant seasons in baseball last season and doesn’t hit free agency for two more years. Crochet posted a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts over 146 innings with a 35.1 percent strikeout rate and 5.5 percent walk rate, a lone bright spot on a 121-loss White Sox team. Among pitchers with at least 100 innings, Crochet’s 35.1 percent strikeout rate was No. 1 in baseball. He led all American League starters with six starts of 10 or more strikeouts. His 97.2 mph fastball ranked in the top 10 percent in the league. He allowed three runs or fewer in 15 consecutive starts in the first half. Garrett Crochet, 99mph Fastball and 95mph Cutter, Overlay. pic.twitter.com/jLAuBNMa39 — Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) April 2, 2024 His 2024 season was even more impressive in that it marked the first year Crochet was a full-time starter in the majors. Drafted in the first round in 2020, Crochet skipped the minors and debuted in September of that season with the White Sox, becoming the first pitcher since Brandon Finnegan in 2014 to make his big-league debut the year he was drafted. The White Sox used Crochet out of the bullpen in 2020 and throughout 2021 with an intent to build him out as a starter, but at the start of 2022, he landed on the injury list with elbow inflammation leading to Tommy John surgery. He missed all of 2022 and most of 2023. Crochet made 32 starts in 2024, but after pitching five or more innings in his first 18 starts, the White Sox limited his innings in the second half. Over the final three months, he pitched no more than four innings a start but took the mound every five days, marking an important step in building out his endurance as a starter, even if he pitched fewer innings. Advertisement He stayed healthy the entire year and because of the purposeful pitching plan, but envisions going much deeper into starts in 2025. “It was frustrating in a lot of ways, but at the same time, I understood the usage concerns,” he said. “Going from 12 to 100 (innings) would be seen as a big jump and just even being that close to 150 (innings) is a lot greater. There were a lot of things I was working on in the second half that I felt like I could have expanded had the innings been a little bit more normal. “In terms of how long my leash will be, I hope to not even be wearing a collar come the second half next year,” he added. Crochet noted his excitement in working with pitching Andrew Bailey who had worked alongside Crochet’s former White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz when both were in San Francisco. Though Crochet is coming off an excellent season, he’s still just 25 with one full season as a starter and has plenty to learn as he enters the Red Sox ’s pitching program. Garrett Crochet, Unfair Behind-the-Back Leg Slider. 😯 pic.twitter.com/nVCyMAm84X — Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) April 7, 2024 As a reliever, Crochet relied almost exclusively on his sweeper and four-seamer. Last season, he added a cutter and sinker while incorporating his changeup more judiciously. “I felt like I was utilizing the changeup a lot more effectively and learned the situations to throw it based on hitters’ reactions or just setting it up in general,” he said as he dug into his pitch mix and how he learned to use different pitches in different situations. “The sweeper was a pitch that at the beginning of the year, I was doing exactly what I wanted to with it, in terms of throwing it for strikes at a higher clip, using it early, using it late,” he said. “Adding the cutter, which I really didn’t do until spring training, was where the real growth started to set in. I felt like that was huge for my game, as a whole. It was kind of protecting the sweeper and protecting the four-seam all at the same time. Advertisement “Throughout the year, as hitters began to adjust to me, I felt that adding a sinker maybe wasn’t necessary, but I saw it as very beneficial after seeing how the cutter panned out. Just being a pitch that breaks to my glove side, and I could throw hard like a fastball. I kind of wanted to pair that with another pitch that broke arm-side that I could throw hard like a fastball.” Crochet said he wasn’t necessarily surprised with how well he pitched last season but was relieved with how well the year went after missing much of the previous two. In a funny turn of events, if Crochet’s history of uniform numbers is any indication of future success in Boston, he’s in good company. The newest Red Sox starter wore No. 45 for the White Sox the past four seasons, but quickly realized Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez ’s “45” was a retired jersey in Boston. Crochet wore No. 34 at the University of Tennessee but realized that number, of course, was also retired, belonging to Hall of Famer David Ortiz. So he went back even further and landed on the No. 14 that he wore in high school in Mississippi, only to learn that Hall of Famer Jim Rice wore “14” and that too sits on the facade in right field among Red Sox retired numbers. Crochet settled on No. 35. Crochet, who pitched with Lucas Giolito and Liam Hendriks in Chicago and met Tanner Houck and Jarren Duran at the All-Star Game, is excited to call Fenway Park home. “It’s an electric atmosphere and the fans are knowledgeable about baseball, and not every fanbase can say that,” he said. “That along with, they expect you to win and they expect you to be great because they’ve seen it before. And that’s the main thing I’m looking forward to.” (Photo: Denis Poroy / Getty Images)
