Sanaullah says 'won't accept pressure' from US to release Imran Govt did not commence dialogue with PTI due to Donald Trump, clarifies PM's aide Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Tuesday ruled out any possibility that the government would accept any pressure from the new US administration led by President-elect Donald Trump to release Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. When questioned about potential pressure from the Trump administration in view of its loyalist Richard Grenell's tweet demanding Imran's release, Sanaullah replied: "We would not work under pressure of Donald Trump [...] if any intervention is made then we would consider it as interference in our sovereignty." Grenell, who has been picked by Trump as "envoy for special missions" earlier this month, had called for release of former premier Imran — who remains incarcerated at the Adiala jail since August last year — via writing "Release Imran Khan" on X last month. The premier's aide, who is also one of the members of the government's negotiation committee, further said that they did not commence dialogue with the major opposition party due to Trump. He stressed that negotiations should be held bilaterally between the treasury and the opposition. He also said that Pakistan had witnessed ups and downs in its bilateral ties with the US, however, Islamabad would not accept anything against its national interests. To another question, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader replied that the federal government would not create obstacles if the Imran Khan-founded party seeks "conclusive and time-bound" talks. He, however, said that it won't be possible if both sides agreed on all demands during the talks, adding that the government was not in haste to summon meetings immediately. He was pointing towards the recent statement of the embattled PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan in which he sought government's “timeframe” in connection with progress on their demands after the latter met Imran at Adiala Jail today. “Dialogues should be held within [a specified] timeframe,” Gohar said, quoting the incarcerated PTI founder, urging the incumbent government to make progress. The PTI founder expressed his satisfaction over initiating the negotiation process, he added. Responding to a question, the PTI chairman said that matters related to the civil disobedience movement were not discussed in the meeting. The development came a day after the ruling coalition and the PTI came to table to defuse political tensions in the cash-strapped country. Negotiating committees, formed by the government and the PTI, conducted their much-hyped meeting in a conducive environment and resolved to continue dialogue process a day ago. National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who presided over the meeting, had said that the next session will be held on January 2 and PTI’s team would present a charter of their demands in the huddle. Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged Muslim faithful to resist tendencies that can divide the state through religion or politics. This is as he donated a bus for the propagation of Islam in the state. He also commended them for their contributions to the growth and development of the state since he assumed office. The governor stated this on Tuesday, while receiving the Muslim Community of Oyo State, led by its leader, Alhaji Kunle Sanni, on a courtesy visit at the Executive Chamber, Office of the Governor, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. The governor said, “Since 2019, I can say it without any bias that some of the quality advice that I have gotten in terms of governance came from our Muslim leaders. So, I don’t discriminate. “When some people came and said that the cabinet is lopsided, while I try to balance things, I also look for quality. If you look at the education sector, the Commissioner for Education is a Muslim. SUBEB Chairman is a Muslim. Barrister Abdulraheem Abiodun, the chairman of the Education Trust Fund, is a Muslim. I have nothing to hide. “They said the appointment of Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning is lopsided. It used to be Finance and Economic Planning but when we came in, we split it into two. And it is almost everything that is going on in Finance that is visible to someone doing Budget and Economic Planning. “Anything they want to bring to Exco, they will ask if it has been captured in the budget. If it is there, they will check how much has been spent and how much is remaining. He is the custodian and he is a Muslim. So, we have nothing to hide. “I will keep saying it that if people want to divide us along religious or political lines, we as leaders must resist that attempt and expose them. “So, I want to say that it is our state; some have come and gone and I will go too. Whatever we do for our state is what the successor will meet and continue from there. “I am begging you that we should resist their attempts because there are people that will profit from our division. But if we don’t allow division, they will go elsewhere. “Day before yesterday, one of the Christian leaders said some people are bringing up the issue of Sharia Court again in Oyo State. And I said, for me in Oyo State, our laws and constitution is what I swore to uphold. If they are within the law, fine. But if they are not, they should expect that I will insist that the law must be followed. “So, I want to use this opportunity to say that if there are certain people using the issue to play politics, they should have a rethink and constantly stay on the side of the law.” Speaking on the Ibadan stampede incident, Governor Makinde assured that the law would take its due course to prevent future occurrences. “The incident at Islamic High School was avoidable and the loss of innocent lives was a sad one. Some of them would have been future leaders. Some could have been future presidents but the dreams are dead. “And then, I listened to people on social media who were saying that because I know Oriyomi Hamzat, justice won’t prevail. I said to myself that these people don’t probably know the kind of person their governor is. “When Prof. was talking, he said something about tempering justice with mercy. Yes, we will get to that but if my child was part of those that died, I would be saying something totally differently. And, no life is bigger than any other life, we are equal before God. “It is easier for people to say I know some certain people and they should be treated as such. What about the 35 innocent souls that died, don’t they also deserve justice? “That was why early this year, I signed off the rule of law enforcement authority. We want our systems to be working like that of the developed world. Rule is rule; law is law. But for us, we don’t want to do those things and they are impeding our progress. “Inasmuch as we’re are fair to everybody, it is fine. On my watch, whoever deserves justice will get it. And how do we ensure that this thing does not occur again? Those are the things we have to look into. “Finally, I will say that we are not infallible. We are all mortals. Wherever you think we have fallen short, call our attention to it and we will make correction. No matter how we try, we will still make mistakes.” Earlier in his speech, the Leader of the Muslim Community, Alhaji Sanni, expressed gratitude to the governor for the massive recruitment of teachers into the primary and secondary schools, describing the act as capable of lifting people from poverty to prosperity. The letter dated Dec. 23 was shared publicly Sunday by New Brunswick MP Wayne Long, who has been saying since the fall that Trudeau should step down. Long wrote in a Facebook post that he shared the letter for "openness and transparency." "If we are to have any chance in the next election, and prevent a Pierre Poilievre government, we need new leadership with a new vision for our party and the country," Long wrote. Atlantic caucus chair and Nova Scotia MP Kody Blois penned the letter, saying it is no longer "tenable" for Trudeau to continue to lead the party. The letter notes that the country faces "instability" amid U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats and signals from opposition parties that they will declare non-confidence in Trudeau's government at the first opportunity. The letter thanks Trudeau for his nine years of service as prime minister, saying he leaves a "positive and consequential legacy." It cautions Trudeau that could be undone if he stays on as leader. The letter comes less than two weeks after Chrystia Freeland's resignation from Trudeau's cabinet as finance minister and deputy prime minister. "Our colleagues this morning expressed their deep personal affection for you, their pride in our work as a Liberal team, but also their deep concern that without a leadership change that progress will be lost under a Pierre Poilievre-lead government," Blois wrote to Trudeau. The letter concludes with a call for a national caucus meeting in early January so the Liberal MPs can discuss their next steps. Blois did not respond immediately to a request for comment. Trudeau is said to be thinking about his future during the holiday break.
