COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Dover-Eyota High School graduate and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wide receiver Jack Studer has been named one of 18 semifinalists for the 2024 Gagliardi Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding football player in NCAA Division III. Studer was named to the 2024 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) First Team after leading UWL in receptions (64), yards (1,081) and touchdowns (nine) this season. He led the WIAC in receiving yards and yards per catch (16.9), while ranking second in receiving yards per game (90.1) and third in receptions and receiving touchdowns. ADVERTISEMENT He had least four receptions in 11 of 12 games this season with at least six catches in six contests. His 1,081 receiving yards this year ranks fifth in school history. This comes on the heels of a 2023 campaign that saw him set a single season school record 1,567 yards (22.4 average) and 15 touchdowns. Studer finishes his career as UWL's all-time leader in touchdown receptions (35) and receiving yards (3,127) while ranking second in career receptions (182). The Gagliardi Trophy, given annually since 1993 is awarded to the most outstanding NCAA Division III football player and recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and community service. The award is named after John Gagliardi, Saint John's University (Minn.) legendary Hall of Fame head football coach who passed away at the age of 91 in 2018. He retired in 2012 with 489 career victories, the most in college football history. The Gagliardi Trophy finalists will be announced during a live show on Thursday, December 19, at 3 p.m. (Central) on D3football.com . Tel Aviv: Israel said that the body of an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi who went missing in the United Arab Emirates has been found after he was killed in what it described as a “heinous antisemitic terror incident.” The UAE’s Interior Ministry later said authorities arrested three suspects involved in the killing of Zvi Kogan. Kogan, 28, an ultra-Orthodox rabbi who went missing on Thursday, ran a kosher grocery store in the futuristic city of Dubai, where Israelis have flocked for commerce and tourism since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in the 2020 Abraham Accords. The agreement has held through more than a year of soaring regional tensions unleashed by Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack into southern Israel. But Israel’s devastating retaliatory offensive in Gaza and its invasion of Lebanon, after months of fighting with the Hezbollah militant group, have stoked anger among Emiratis, Arab nationals and others living in the the UAE. However, senior Emirati diplomat Anwer Gargash wrote on the social platform X in Arabic that “the UAE will remain a home of safety, an oasis of stability, a society of tolerance and coexistence and a beacon of development, pride and advancement.” Earlier, the UAE’s state-run WAM news agency acknowledged Kogan’s disappearance but pointedly did not acknowledge he held Israeli citizenship, referring to him only as being Moldovan. The Emirati Interior Ministry described Kogan as being “missing and out of contact.” “Specialised authorities immediately began search and investigation operations upon receiving the report,” the Interior Ministry said. The ministry later said that three “perpetrators” had been arrested “in record time” without giving additional details. Netanyahu told a regular Cabinet meeting later Sunday that he was “deeply shocked” by Kogan’s disappearance and death. He said he appreciated the cooperation of the UAE in the investigation and that ties between the two countries would continue to be strengthened. Israel’s largely ceremonial president, Isaac Herzog, condemned the killing and thanked Emirati authorities for “their swift action.” He said he trusts they “will work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice.” Israel also again warned against all nonessential travel to the Emirates after Kogan’s killing. “There is concern that there is still a threat against Israelis and Jews in the area,” a government warning issued Sunday said. Kogan was an emissary of the Chabad Lubavitch movement, a prominent and highly observant branch of ultra-Orthodox Judaism based in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighbourhood in New York City. It said he was last seen in Dubai. The UAE has a burgeoning Jewish community, with synagogues and businesses catering to kosher diners. The Rimon Market, a kosher grocery store that Kogan managed on Dubai’s busy Al Wasl Road, was shut Sunday. As the wars have roiled the region, the store has been the target of online protests by supporters of the Palestinians. Mezuzahs on the front and back doors of the market appeared to have been ripped off when an Associated Press journalist stopped by on Sunday. Kogan’s wife, Rivky, is a US citizen who lived with him in the UAE. She is the niece of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, who was killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The UAE is an autocratic federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula and is also home to Abu Dhabi. Local Jewish officials in the UAE declined to comment. While the Israeli statement did not mention Iran, Iranian intelligence services have carried out past kidnappings in the UAE. Western officials believe Iran runs intelligence operations in the UAE and keeps tabs on the hundreds of thousands of Iranians living across the country. Iran is suspected of kidnapping and later killing British Iranian national Abbas Yazdi in Dubai in 2013, though Tehran has denied involvement. Iran also kidnapped Iranian German national Jamshid Sharmahd in 2020 from Dubai, taking him back to Tehran, where he was executed in October. I do, however, like to keep store-purchased canned veggies in my pantry and use them in tight squeezes. I am confused by statements that canned veggies are highly nutritious and comparable to frozen. Comparing nutrition labels does not seem to support this statement. I would so appreciate your input.” Fresh veggies certainly are best if available — and if they don’t lose precious nutrients by overcooking or languishing too long in the fridge. But don’t feel bad about using frozen and canned varieties, too. They are picked at the peak of ripeness and generally processed right away, which helps maintain nutrients. In fact, the current 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage us to eat a variety of vegetables including “fresh, frozen and canned.” While frozen and canned veggies both have their place, some facts about canned goods may surprise you. For one, they may literally save your life in an emergency when refrigerated food is not available. What about sodium? According to the Canned Food Alliance (mealtime.org), salt or sodium is not used to preserve canned food. That’s done with heat and cooling. So it’s OK to look for lower-sodium versions if needed. Or you can simply drain and rinse beans and other canned vegetables to get rid of 40% or more of the added sodium. Interestingly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the major sources of sodium in our food are pizza, cold cuts, cured meat, bread, rolls, burgers and sandwiches. Canned food is not even in the top 10. What about nutrients and other beneficial substances? Some, such as lycopene (the healthful red pigment in tomatoes) and beta carotene (which converts to vitamin A in the body), are actually enhanced in heat-processed canned vegetables. Vitamin C is another story. It is the least stable of all vitamins and is easily destroyed by heat and exposure to air. However, according to a 2021 review in the journal Antioxidants, new technologies can now preserve the vitamin C content in many canned foods. I have a can of 100% vegetable juice in my cupboard, and it contains more vitamin C than a medium orange. “The general conclusion of this review,” say these authors, “was that while canned foods are often perceived as less nutritious than fresh or frozen products, the research reveals that this is not always true.” Susan C. from Lynchburg, Virginia, responded to a recent column about feeding picky grandkids: “You said you always want to throw in a vegetable and that you saw a tomato on your counter. I was always told that a tomato is really a fruit. Isn’t that true?” It is true. Tomatoes are biologically fruits but nutritionally vegetables. The former president urged audience members in a packed theater to remain engaged and find ways to communicate with those they disagree with despite a divisive political time. The two spoke about a month after former President Donald Trump's win over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election. “We’re just passing through, and we all need to just calm down and do something that builds people up instead of tears them down,” Bill Clinton said. Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state who was defeated by Trump in the 2016 election, said she understands the next couple of years are going to be challenging for voters who don't agree with the decisions being made. "In addition to staying involved and staying aware, it’s important to find something that makes you feel good about the day because if you’re in a constant state of agitation about our political situation, it is really going to shorten your life," she said. The Clintons spoke during a panel discussion with journalist Laura Ling, who the former president helped free in 2009 when she was detained in North Korea with another journalist. Hillary Clinton said part of the goal is to modernize the facility and expand it to make it a more open, inviting place for people for convene and make connections. When asked about advice he would give for people disappointed by the election results, Bill Clinton said people need to continue working toward bringing people together and improving others' lives. “If that's the way you keep score, then you ought to be trying to run up the score,” he said. “Not lamenting the fact that somebody else is winning a different game because they keep score a different way." “And in addition, figure out what we can do to win again,” Hillary Clinton added, eliciting cheers. The program featured a panel discussion with cast members of the hit NBC show “The West Wing” and former Clinton White House staffers. The weekend amounted to a reunion of former Clinton White House staffers, supporters and close friends, including former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and adviser James Carville. McAuliffe said he and Carville ate Friday at Doe's Eat Place, a downtown restaurant that was popular with Clinton aides and reporters during Clinton's 1992 White House run.
