Steve Verheul, former chief trade negotiator for Canada, says though the threat may not seem credible to many, the country still needs to take it seriously by engaging with the new administration and considering potential retaliation. "We’re in a very uncertain period right now," said Verheul during an online panel hosted by BMO on Wednesday. Trump has said he will introduce tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports into the U.S. unless they are able to halt the movement of illegal drugs and migrants across their borders. Experts have warned such tariffs would be damaging to the Canadian economy. "Our economies are integrated, our supply chains are closely intertwined, and we would be in for a highly disruptive period of time if such tariffs were to be put in place," said Verheul. "So I think the question now is, how will Canada respond?" Canada will do what it can to try and dissuade Trump from enacting such a dramatic policy, said Verheul, but if Trump makes good on his threat come inauguration day, Canada needs to be ready to retaliate, such as with tariffs of its own. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently flew to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, and briefed opposition leaders this week on the government's plan for the Canada-U.S. border. Verheul was joined on the panel by BMO chief economist Doug Porter and Yung-Yu Ma, chief investment officer for BMO Wealth Management in the U.S. Trump initially said he would enact 10-per-cent tariffs on all imports, with a 60-per-cent hit for China. But more recently he threatened Canada and Mexico with 25-per-cent tariffs. Porter said such high tariffs on all imports are unlikely to happen, especially on key imports like energy. Financial markets don't appear to believe the threats will become reality, he said — but that doesn't mean they should be disregarded. "I think we should take the threat seriously, or at the very least prepare and consider what broad-based tariffs could mean for the economy," he said. “The reality is, we're dealing with an overtly protectionist president who is very fond of using tariffs." Verheul said 25-per-cent tariffs across the board would be a significant hit to Canada's economy, which relies heavily on exports to the U.S., as does Mexico. Trump is a "big fan of tariffs," said Verheul, and sees them as a way to bring production back to the U.S., address trade deficits, and increase revenue. But while Trump's interest in tariffs isn't new, Ma said this time around we're dealing with a different Trump, one who is no longer a political outsider. “President Trump is definitely more emboldened with tariffs this time around than he was in 2017, 2018," he said. While Ma also doesn't think the threats of sweeping tariffs are credible, he could see Trump enacting more limited tariffs on certain goods as bargaining chips. The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) is up for review in 2026, meaning 2025 is a year for negotiations, said Verheul. "I think there's a good chance that all of these tariff discussions will start to evolve into a renegotiation of the agreement, and we would attempt to address some of those issues within that negotiation," he said. The Los Angeles Galaxy will aim to complete one of the most remarkable transformations in Major League Soccer history on Saturday when they host the New York Red Bulls chasing a record-extending sixth MLS Cup crown. A year ago, the California franchise had hit rock bottom, plummeting to their worst ever regular season record to finish one place off the bottom of the Western Conference. The team that had once been a home to the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were engulfed in crisis, with fans boycotting fixtures after nearly a decade of failure on the field. Moreover, the Galaxy's status as one of MLS's glamour clubs had been diminished by the arrival of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, as well as the emergence of city rivals Los Angeles FC, winners of the MLS Cup in 2022. Jimmy Carter's 1977-1981 presidency included successes like the Camp David peace accords, but also enough controversy for U.S. voters to see him as weak — and send him packing after only one term. Carter's legacy, however, was largely built on his post-presidency, the longest in U.S. history. Here are a few key moments in the life of Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100. The Panama Canal During his first year in office, Carter went back on a campaign promise and decided to hand back management of the Panama Canal — which had been in U.S. military control since its construction at the start of the 20th century. "Fairness, and not force, should lie at the heart of our dealings with the nations of the world," he said at the signing of the canal treaties with Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos on September 7, 1977. Carter was ridiculed for the move, which gave Panama control over the canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the end of 1999. History, however, has looked upon the deal as a deft bit of diplomacy. Giving Panama a meatier role in the canal's management in the run-up to the transfer allowed for stability and broke with America's image as an overbearing imperialist power in Latin America. Morality in politics Upon his arrival in the Oval Office, Carter looked to distance himself from the realpolitik practiced by his predecessors — a vestige of the Cold War — and placed human rights at the heart of his agenda. "Our principal goal is to help shape a world which is more responsive to the desire of people everywhere for economic well-being, social justice, political self-determination and basic human rights," he said in a 1978 speech at the U.S. Naval Academy. In concrete terms, Carter notably signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in 1977. It was eventually ratified by the United States in 1992 after being blocked for years by the Senate. Camp David Accords In September 1978, Carter invited Israeli Premier Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to Camp David, the presidential retreat outside Washington. After 13 days of secret negotiations under Carter's mediation, two accords were signed that ultimately led to a peace treaty the following year. The diplomatic triumph was cited when Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Crisis of confidence In the summer of 1979, the economy rocked by inflation and his approval rating in free fall, Carter addressed the American people in a nationwide televised speech on July 15. In that half-hour, he responded to his critics on his lack of leadership, instead laying the blame on a national "crisis of confidence." The Carter Center Carter remained extremely active into his 90s despite his retirement from political life. In 1982, he founded the Carter Center, which has focused on conflict resolution, promoting democracy and human rights, and fighting disease. Carter — often viewed as America's most successful former president — traveled extensively, supervising elections from Haiti to East Timor, and tackling thorny global problems as a mediator. The Elders Carter was also a member of The Elders, a group of former world leaders founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007 to promote peace and human rights. Fellow Nobel peace laureates South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu (who died in 2021), former Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf Johnson and the late U.N. Qatar tribune Agencies New York Traders defied China’s efforts to support the yuan, sending the currency to a one-year low on bets policymakers will have to keep easing monetary policy to revive the economy. The yuan was dragged down as the nation’s 10-year bond yields slid to a record on concern the economic malaise will worsen further due to expected higher tariffs once Donald Trump becomes US president. The declines came even after Beijing tried to bolster the currency with a stronger-than-expected daily reference rate. “The yuan remains sluggish amid expectations for further rate cuts at home, while the economic recovery remains uneven,” said Christopher Wong, a strategist at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. in Singapore. “Headlines over the past few days serve as a constant reminder that wider tariffs could soon hit when Trump comes on board officially in January.” The yuan’s decline of almost 4 percent from its late September high threatens to undo China’s long-held ambition to maintain a stable, powerful currency. Traders are now closely watching whether the authorities will allow the daily fixing to be set weaker than the level of 7.2 per dollar, which has been seen as an important line in the sand. The yuan has been the worst-performing Asian currency since the start of November, with much of the decline being triggered by Trump’s election victory. “The PBOC will be very careful in managing how far the renminbi goes,” said Tai Hui, Asia Pacific chief market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management in Hong Kong, using another name for the yuan. “From a domestic perspective, a rapidly depreciating RMB has always been seen as a risk to financial stability.” Pressure on yuan has intensified in recent days as trade tensions have escalated. Trump on the weekend reiterated a threat to impose 100 percent tariffs on a group of emerging-market countries including China. The US then unveiled new restrictions on China’s access to vital components for chips and artificial intelligence on Monday. To make matter worse, the yuan’s interest-rate discount to the US has been widening as traders added to bets on PBOC easing. China’s 10-year yield slid to a record 1.98 percent on Monday, more than 2 percentage points below similar-maturity US Treasuries. The onshore yuan is also trading at the largest discount relative to the daily fixing since July, reflecting the bearish sentiment. The majority of analysts are pessimistic. BNP Paribas SA, UBS Group AG and Societe Generale SA all predict the currency will weaken beyond last year’s low of 7.3510 some time during 2025. “The risk is for the yuan to weaken further, driven primarily by a strong dollar on better US economic data,” said Wee Khoon Chong, a strategist at BNY in Hong Kong. “The market is fearing the uncertainties around Trump’s potential tariffs as soon as January.” The yuan’s declines were tempered Tuesday as state banks increased their dollar sales when the onshore currency weakened toward 7.30, according to traders who asked not to be identified. Chinese stocks also fell. The benchmark CSI 300 Index slipped as much as 0.6 percent, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index lost as much as 1.1 percent before erasing declines. “Given the sentiment, it’s important for the 7.20 fix level to hold, as any fix set higher would trigger more immediate dollar buying,” said Khoon Goh, head of Asia Research at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group in Singapore. In addition to the daily reference rate, “the PBOC has several tools it can use to stem the depreciation pressure,” he said. While in Melbourne during the week, I bumped into Amaru owner Clinton McIver who, unprompted, told me what a key role Overbye had played in the evolution of the restaurant. So although Overbye’s medium of choice might be the humble pie, it’s safe to assume it will be informed by plenty of kitchen know-how. For now, the plan is to serve 10 different pies each day, most of them savoury. Some fillings will be familiar (mince pies, steak and mushroom, say). Some, such as apricot chicken, Korean-braised eggplant and Japanese-style golden curry will be more left of centre, not least because Overbye is committed to ensuring vegetarians get in on the action. Vegetarians such as Patrick Wallis, the former operations manager at Modus and Overbye’s business partner at Angelwood, who’ll be overseeing the shop’s back-end. Another of Overbye’s commitments will be “real ingredients”, from mushrooms grown by urban farmers The Mushroom Guys and thoughtfully raised meats to the butter – not margarine – he’ll use in pastry. Speaking of which, Angelwood’s pies will feature two different pastries: a shortcrust, sturdier pastry for the bases and a flakier laminated pastry for the lids: “the best of both worlds,” says Overbye. Sweet pie fillings might include cherry and pecan, while Overbye has hinted that trad Aussie bakery items such as vanilla slices may also make appearances. Sausages rolls are another item our man is looking forward to re-examining through the Angelwood lens. Although takeaway is the name of the game, the shop will feature a small counter for people to park up at while waiting for orders and coffees. The rest of the beverage range will follow the same new-meets-old spirit: expect Bundaberg ginger beer and chocolate milk sharing fridge space with small-batch sodas and kombucha from Margaret River’s Waves & Caves.
