In recent news, a disturbing incident has come to light involving a budget 9.9 yuan day trip that turned into a nightmare for over 50 senior citizens. These individuals, seeking a brief escape and a chance to explore new destinations, were left stranded on the roadside, highlighting the risks and pitfalls of cut-price travel deals.

Toy Show update One of the stars of the Toy Show , Brian Óg, opened the show by taking over Patrick Kielty’s host duties. When Kielty asked him to sing Wagon Wheel on a karaoke machine - as he had on last week’s show - Brian Óg said he’d prefer the real deal. Cue Nathan Carter arriving for a duet. “The phone’s been hopping all week,” Brian Óg said of the past week before promising he’d have Kielty’s job for real “in the next 10 or 12 years”. A post shared by Irish Examiner (@irish_examiner) It comes as this year’s Toy Show Appeal reached over €5 million in donations since its launch ahead of last week’s episode. Dancing with the Stars news The Late Late Show kicked off proceedings with a glamourous announcement: five new faces we’ll be seeing on Dancing with the Stars from January 5, 2025 onwards. Television presenter Elaine Crowley, chef Kevin Dundon, social media star Kayleigh Trappe, Olympic gold medalist Rhys McClenaghan and actress Yasmin Seky are the latest celebrity dancers added to the line-up. Earlier this week, Mickey Joe Harte, Olympian Jack Woolley, comedian Gearóid Farrelly, Mrs. Brown’s Boys actor Danny O’Carroll and former Miss Universe Ireland, Aishah Akorede were confirmed as contestants in the new season of the competition. "They haven't stopped laughing since I told them," Elaine said about telling her family the news. "I've never been so nervous in my life. I don't know why I'm doing this, I must be nuts." New judge Karen Byrne also joined the group to talk about going from pro dancer on the show to judge and why she will "say it how it is". "I could be tough but I'll be encouraging." Rupert Everett and his almost-Irish citizenship Actor Rupert Everett told Kielty about his failed attempt to become an Irish citizen after Brexit. “I decided to move to Ireland at one point when Brexit happened. Boris Johnson became the Prime Minister in England, I thought, ‘That's enough. I'm moving to Ireland’,” he said. “I have an Irish grandmother. I thought 'I can get an Irish passport'. Unfortunately, she was born in England, and then she came back to Ireland, so I couldn't get an Irish passport. So my new life was aborted, finally, unfortunately.” A post shared by Irish Examiner (@irish_examiner) Looking back on his career, he said he would consider doing a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding with Julia Roberts. “They're difficult to pull off, those kind of things, really,” he said, adding “it just never happened.” He said he had a “sweet” reunion with his costars on the film’s 20th anniversary and that he would “love to see a sequel”. Life after European gold Irish athlete Ciara Mageean joined Patrick Kielty to talk about winning gold at the European Championships and the disappointment she felt after an injury laid waste to her Olympic dream. ”I've been battling with this injury for quite a long time,” she said of her Achille’s tendon injury. “Unfortunately for me, something gave a little bit more in my final prep. I flew early into Paris to try to rectify it, had two cortisone injections, but ultimately, the day before I was to race my first race, I had to make the decision to withdraw.” She described the grieving process she went through after having to pause her Olympic dream and how she felt like “the biggest failure” when she came home. “In many ways, it's the death of a dream. It was my life's work to get out there and race on the Olympic stage.” Peacekeepers home from Lebanon Irish peacekeepers recently returned from South Lebanon spoke about life in Camp Shamrock. Commandant Jane O'Neill recalled her recent experience there as “the most challenging one”, describing it as “a dangerous operating environment”. “We definitely got to put all our training to the test,” she added. Private Adam Higgins, one of the youngest peacekeepers deployed as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said he would still encourage people to consider it as a career path. “I think everyone should do it least,” he said. “I think it really puts into perspective what you want to do in life.”The bullish start of the A-shares market drew attention and optimism from many investors and market participants. The benchmark indices showed a sharp rise at the opening bell, indicating positive market sentiment and confidence among traders. However, the upward trend was short-lived, as profit-taking and cautious trading strategies led to a midday reversal in the market. As the battle for control of Manbij rages on, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilian lives and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The international community must also play a constructive role in mediating the conflict and ensuring that a lasting ceasefire is established to prevent further bloodshed and destruction.

December 16, 2024 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked peer-reviewed publication trusted source proofread by National University of Singapore Food scientists at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have revealed key characteristics of the foodborne pathogen Salmonella dry surface biofilm (DSB), a previously overlooked type of biofilm that commonly exists in dry food processing environments. Bacterial biofilm formation in the food industry is a significant concern, affecting food safety , production efficiency, economic loss, and consumer trust. Most existing research on foodborne pathogenic biofilms has focused on wet surface biofilms (WSBs), as it is generally believed that microorganisms cannot survive under dry conditions, let alone form biofilms. However, recent recalls and outbreaks of Salmonella associated with low-moisture food (LMF) have provided mounting evidence that pathogens can persist in dry conditions. A research team led by Assistant Professor LI Dan from the NUS Department of Food Science and Technology has provided a detailed characterization of the Salmonella DSBs examining their morphology, single-cell landscape, and response to sanitization techniques in comparison to traditional WSBs. The efforts of this research offer valuable insights for managing dry biofilms in the food industry. The research findings were published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology on 4 November 2024. The study explored the structural and functional characteristics of Salmonella Typhimurium DSB using advanced microscopy techniques, including confocal laser scanning, transmission electron, and scanning electron microscopy. These analyses revealed unique features of DSB compared to WSB. Specifically, DSB cells are surrounded by a dense, compact capsule that likely contributes to their higher antimicrobial resistance, while WSB cells display distinct plasma and outer membrane layers. Additionally, DSBs exhibit a "sandwich-like" vertical structure, with intact cells at the core and damaged cells on the outer layer. To understand functional diversity within the biofilm, single-cell transcriptomics was employed, identifying bacterial clusters with active antioxidative and virulence functions—highlighting potential safety concerns for LMFs. The team also developed a water-free antibiofilm strategy tailored for the LMF industry. This method combines the flavonoid morin with 70% isopropyl alcohol, offering an effective sanitization method without requiring water. Asst Prof Li said, "The outcomes of this research are of critical importance, offering several pivotal insights. By detailing the structural and functional properties of Salmonella DSB, we illuminate how these biofilms resist desiccation and sanitization, which are prevalent challenges in LMF environments. "The application of single-cell RNA sequencing allows us to uncover the heterogeneity within DSB populations. These findings challenge the perception of dehydrated biofilm cells as uniformly dormant and underscore the persistent threat posed by these pathogens. "With the advent of flavonoid-based sanitizers, the food industry can adopt more effective, eco-friendly, and scalable solutions for biofilm management. Implementing such strategies could significantly reduce contamination events, enhance consumer trust, and minimize financial losses associated with recalls and outbreaks. "Taken together, these outcomes reaffirm our commitment to translating scientific discoveries into actionable solutions for food safety and public health." By Steve Benen After Elon Musk helped derail a bipartisan spending bill with misinformation , Rep. Richie Neal made no effort to hide his frustration . The Massachusetts Democrat — the ranking member on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee — asked, “Can you imagine what the next two years will be like if every time that Congress works its will, and then there’s a tweet, or from an individual who has no official portfolio, who threatens members on the Republican side with a primary, and they succumb?” The billionaire apparently wasn’t pleased with the congressman’s comments, declaring soon after that he would soon “be funding moderate candidates in heavily Democrat districts, so that the country can get rid of those who don’t represent them, like this jacka--.” Whether Musk is aware of this or not, Neal is already widely seen as a moderate, and there’s no reason to believe a primary rival backed by the world’s wealthiest individual would fare any better against the longtime lawmaker. But in the case of Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, a primary challenge apparently isn’t good enough for the billionaire: Musk wants her to be kicked out of Congress altogether. As CNBC reported , at the heart of the story is a change made to the stopgap spending bill designed to prevent a government shutdown last week. House Democrats Jim McGovern of Massachusetts and Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut say their Republican colleagues in Congress caved to the demands of Elon Musk, sinking a bipartisan government funding bill that would have regulated U.S. investments in China. In the original, bipartisan spending agreement — the one that Musk helped kill — there was a provision designed to restrict U.S. investments in China , specifically related to investments in the artificial intelligence and technology sectors. When the legislation was rewritten, Republican took this provision out for reasons GOP officials haven’t fully explained. Ostensibly, the party was looking to make the bill cheaper, but this measure cost effectively nothing. In a series of online items , McGovern complained that the removed provision “would have made it easier to keep cutting-edge AI and quantum computing tech — as well as jobs — in America.” The Massachusetts Democrat added, “But Elon had a problem.” McGovern went on to write, “His bottom line depends on staying in China’s good graces. He [Musk] wants to build an AI data center there too — which could endanger U.S. security. He’s been bending over backwards to ingratiate himself with Chinese leaders.” DeLauro went a bit further, writing a letter to congressional leaders questioning whether the change to the bill reflected some kind of behind-the-scenes corruption: Perhaps, the Connecticut Democrat alleged, the legislation was tweaked specifically to benefit Musk, who has, as DeLauro put it, “extensive” business interests in China. It was, to be sure, a provocative allegation. But the billionaire megadonor responded with an online item of his own , calling DeLauro an “awful creature” and saying that he believes the Democratic congresswoman “needs to be expelled from Congress!” For the record, members of Congress are allowed to raise concerns about possible corruption, just as they’re able to make allegations regarding prominent public figures. Whether the congresswoman’s allegations have merit or not, to suggest that an elected lawmaker be kicked out of office for criticizing a billionaire in ways he doesn’t like is, to put it mildly, unsettling. As in past years, YouTube was the single most popular platform teenagers used — 90% said they watched videos on the site, down slightly from 95% in 2022. Nearly three-quarters said they visit YouTube every day. There was a slight downward trend in several popular apps teens used. For instance, 63% of teens said they used TikTok, down from 67% and Snapchat slipped to 55% from 59%. This small decline could be due to pandemic-era restrictions easing up and kids having more time to see friends in person, but it's not enough to be truly meaningful . X saw the biggest decline among teenage users. Only 17% of teenagers said they use X, down from 23% in 2022, the year Elon Musk bought the platform. Reddit held steady at 14%. About 6% of teenagers said they use Threads, Meta's answer to X that launched in 2023. The report comes as countries around the world are grappling with how to handle the effects of social media on young people's well-being. Australia recently passed a law banning kids under 16 from social networks, though it's unclear how it will be able to enforce the age limit — and whether it will come with unintended consequences such as isolating vulnerable kids from their peers. Meta's messaging service WhatsApp was a rare exception in that it saw the number of teenage users increase, to 23% from 17% in 2022. Pew also asked kids how often they use various online platforms. Small but significant numbers said they are on them “almost constantly.” For YouTube, 15% reported constant use, for TikTok, 16% and for Snapchat, 13%. As in previous surveys, girls were more likely to use TikTok almost constantly while boys gravitated to YouTube. There was no meaningful gender difference in the use of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. Roughly a quarter of Black and Hispanic teens said they visit TikTok almost constantly, compared with just 8% of white teenagers. The report was based on a survey of 1,391 U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 conducted from Sept. 18 to Oct. 10, 2024.
