But shares of Jeju Air Co. lost 8.8% after one of the company’s jets skidded off a runway , slammed into a concrete fence and burst into flames Sunday in South Korea as its landing gear failed to deploy. 179 people died in the crash. Political turmoil continued as South Korean law enforcement officials requested a court warrant on Monday to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. They are investigating whether his martial law decree on Dec. 3 amounted to rebellion. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index lost 0.9% to 39,914.21 as the dollar gained against the Japanese yen, trading at 157.83 yen, up from 157.75 yen. The Tokyo market will wrap up trading for 2024 with a yearend ceremony as Japan begins its New Year holidays, the biggest festival of the year. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong shed 0.3% to 20,030.63 while the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.3% at 3,408.72. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 dipped 0.9% to 8,191.50. On Friday, the S&P 500 fell 1.1% to 5,970.84. Roughly 90% of stocks in the benchmark index lost ground, but it managed to hold onto a modest gain of 0.7% for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8% to 42,992.21. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite fell 1.5%, to 19,722.03. The losses were made worse by sharp declines for the Big Tech stocks known as the “Magnificent 7”, which can heavily influence the direction of the market because of their large size. A wide range of retailers also fell. Amazon fell 1.5% and Best Buy slipped 1.5%. The sector is being closely watched for clues on how it performed during the holiday shopping season. The S&P 500 gained nearly 3% over a 3-day stretch before breaking for the Christmas holiday. On Thursday, the index posted a small decline. Despite Friday's drop, the market is moving closer to another standout annual finish . The S&P 500 is on track for a gain of around 25% in 2024. That would mark a second consecutive yearly gain of more than 20%, the first time that has happened since 1997-1998. The gains have been driven partly by upbeat economic data showing that consumers continued spending and the labor market remained strong. Inflation, while still high, has also been steadily easing. A report on Friday showed that sales and inventory estimates for the wholesales trade industry fell 0.2% in November, following a slight gain in October. That weaker-than-expected report follows an update on the labor market Thursday that showed unemployment benefits held steady last week. The stream of upbeat economic data and easing inflation helped prompt a reversal in the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy this year. Expectations for interest rate cuts also helped drive market gains. The central bank recently delivered its third cut to interest rates in 2024. Even though inflation has come closer to the central bank's target of 2%, it remains stubbornly above that mark and worries about it heating up again have tempered the forecast for more interest rate cuts. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market’s path ahead and shifting economic policies under incoming President Donald Trump. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. In other dealings early Monday, U.S. benchmark crude oil picked up 1 cent to $70.61 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, lost 1 cent to $73.78 per barrel. The euro fell to $1.0427 from $1.0433.Trump convinced Republicans to overlook his misconduct. But can he do the same for his nominees?

Stock market today: Asian shares are mixed after Wall Street slips, led by tech giantsPatna, Dec 30 (PTI) In an apparent dig at Jan Suraaj Party, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav accused the fledgling outfit floated by former political strategist Prashant Kishor of acting as ‘B team’ of the Nitish Kumar-led ruling alliance in Bihar. In a video message late on Sunday, hours after police used water cannons to disperse students seeking cancellation of a recent BPSC exam, the former deputy CM, in an apparent reference to the IPAC founder and his party, said the protesters were “misled” into marching towards Gandhi Maidan. “This movement was started by students. The nearly two week-long dharna at Gardani Bagh, where I also had gone recently, had caused the government to tremble. At this moment, came some elements acting as the government’s B team,” alleged Yadav, who is now the leader of the opposition. “The protesters were misled into marching towards Gandhi Maidan, despite warnings from the administration against doing so. And, when the time to face lathi charge and water cannons came, those who had offered to lead the protests, chose to run away,” he said. Notably, though Kishor was not at the spot when police took recourse to use of force, he had addressed the protesters earlier on Sunday along with his supporters. This has led to slapping of an FIR against Kishor and Jan Suraaj Party president Manoj Bharti, in addition to several others. The protesters, who were joined earlier on Sunday by Prashant Kishor at Gandhi Maidan, attempted to march towards the chief minister’s residence in the evening, prompting police to take action, Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh had said. Yadav promised that his party will use its clout to “politically” back the protesters’ demand for cancellation of the Combined Competitive Exams held on December 13, when five lakh candidates had appeared at more than 900 centres across the state. “But you must not get swayed by empty promises. Stick to your guns. January 4 is still a few days away. There is time enough to bring the government to its knees. It is nonsensical to say the BPSC does not come under the government. Its chairman is an appointee of the chief minister, who also happens to hold the Home portfolio, the department which controls the police,” said Yadav. Notably, the BPSC has decided to hold re-examination for more than 10,000 candidates who were assigned Bapu Pariksha Parisar, an examination centre in the city where hundreds had boycotted the tests alleging that question papers had been “leaked”. The BPSC rubbished the allegation and claimed the test was disrupted as part of a “conspiracy” to get the exam cancelled. PTI NAC ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. "I am looking for a chief of staff for myself. However, this role is not a conventional role with the usual perks that such jobs come with. We are making this job unattractive for most people. There is no salary for this role for the first year. You will have to pay Rs 20 lakh for this opportunity. 100% of this 'fee' will be paid in the form of a donation directly to Feeding India. Second year onwards, we will start paying you the usual salary (definitely more than Rs 50 lakh, but something we will only talk about at the start of Year 2,'' Mr Goyal wrote. NEW YORK — The city that never sleeps isn’t exactly a college football town. That’s why they’re playing the Pinstripe Bowl in a world-famous baseball stadium. But if you’re staging a memorable snowball fight, it’s hard to beat Central Park on Christmas Day, as an army of Nebraska football players, dressed in white warmup gear, walked into a clearing dusted with snow. The Huskers had a short walk-through practice as coach Matt Rhule hatched a plot with his coaches. “We’re going to start the biggest snowball fight of all time,” Rhule said, as captured by NU’s social media staff. Eventually the battle dwindled down to Rhule chasing his prize quarterback, Dylan Raiola, like a pass rusher looking for a sack. “I have to get him,” Rhule said, pursuing Raiola into two more defenders — well, coaches — who all delivered a snowball to Raiola’s 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame. People are also reading... A snowball fight in Central Park — is this holiday heaven? It’s a prelude to Nebraska and Boston College, Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Before kickoff, NU spent the week in the city, practicing three different times, eating pizza and sandwiches, taking the subway, visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and, for a few, ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. The city is not the classic warm climate bowl spot — though the Huskers played the 1962 Gotham Bowl in New York — but, when you haven’t been to a bowl in eight years, and your 6-6 record barely squeezed you into this soiree, you’ll take what you can get, especially if you’re a sixth-year senior like Ty Robinson or Bryce Benhart — who have never played in a bowl game — or even if you’re a true freshman from Miami, like Jacory Barney or Vincent Shavers, on the front of a Husker career. “The value feels great, coming to another state, coming to compete, win, last game for the seniors,” Shavers said. “Leave on a good note. I’m very happy for them. Let’s get it.” NU has never faced Boston College, making its third appearance in the Pinstripe Bowl. Neither the Eagles nor the ACC has had much success in the game against the Big Ten, which has won the last seven matchups in Yankee Stadium and eight of the last nine. That may account, to some degree, for the Huskers being a four-point favorite headed into kickoff. Or it could be what’s likely to be a NU fan advantage in the Yankee Stadium seats that somewhat awkwardly encircle the playing surface, with one of the end zones sitting right near the outfield wall. Or perhaps it’s the slew of seniors who, instead of opting out of the bowl, will experience the postseason for the first time Saturday. “I’m just excited to be a part of this experience,” said Robinson, who finished with 33 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and six sacks this season. “It was a big reason why I wanted to come to Nebraska, just to help make it great and be a part of the process to where we get this thing turned around, where we needed it to go. “I’m loyal through and through to this place, so to be able to represent the red ‘N’ one more time in Yankee Stadium — I’m blessed and honored.” Robinson will play his last game for a new defensive coordinator — John Butler, taking over for Tony White — and alongside young players, like Riley Van Poppel, who redshirted behind now-departed Huskers lured to the transfer portal by lucrative NIL offers. As NU continues to get down to a 105-man roster for 2025, more than 20 have left the program between the end of the Iowa game and Saturday’s kickoff. Dozens more are likely to leave after that. “The national move is you have less guys,” Rhule said, “so it’s an opportunity for some younger guys to play.” In its one open practice this week, Nebraska chose to let some of its younger players — Shavers and Van Poppel — speak to their experiences. And NU’s social media staff posted a photo of the nine 2025 high school signees who made the trip and can practice with the team. They’ll get to pile into Yankee Stadium, too. So NU, like many college football teams, arrives at its bowl game in flux — what Rhule, in his late December press conference in Lincoln, called a “fine line.” “It’s the end of this year and the first game of next year,” Rhule said. The fourth game for NU’s offensive coordinator — Dana Holgorsen — and the first game in a new role for defensive coordinator John Butler. Rhule said Holgorsen has made subtle changes but “not a wholesale shift” to the scheme, while Butler is tasked with continuing the 3-3-5 system developed by predecessor Tony White and Rhule. Collectively, coaches, players and the storylines of a wild season — from an impressive blowout of Colorado to an ugly loss at Indiana, through ending a long losing streak to Wisconsin — will converge on a baseball stadium that hosted the 2024 World Series. It might not be the venue Nebraska expected or planned. But it’s where one season ends and another begins. “I have this thing I say to myself all the time: Just winning comes first,” Rhule said. “Winning always comes first.” Whether it’s a snowball fight or a football game. HOUSTON (AP) — Tyler Herro scored 27 points before being one of six people ejected after a fight in the final minute of the Miami Heat’s 104-100 victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday night. Herro was thrown to the ground by the Rockets’ Amen Thompson with 35 seconds left and the Heat leading 99-94. Players and coaches from both benches then came onto the court. Both players were thrown out along with Rockets guard Jalen Green, coach Ime Udoka and assistant coach Ben Sullivan. Terry Rozier was also ejected for Miami. Houston led 92-85 after Fred VanVleet’s layup with 8:10 to play, but the Rockets missed their next 11 shots, allowing Miami to tie the game when Herro found Haywood Highsmith for a 3-pointer with 4:47 to play. Herro’s jumper with 1:56 to play put the Heat on top for good. MAGIC 102, NETS 101 ORLANDO, Fla. Goga Bitadze added 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. The Magic’s comeback was their second in eight days after Orlando rallied from 25 points down to beat Miami 121-114 on Dec. 21. Thomas came off the bench with 25 points to lead the Nets in his first game since Nov. 25. Jalen Wilson added 16 points including two free throws with 6.2 seconds left. Thomas, Brooklyn’s leading scorer with 24.7 points per game, played 25 minutes after missing 13 games with a strained left hamstring. Pascal Siakam chipped in with 17 points and Bennedict Mathurin had 14. Jaylen Brown led Boston with 31 points and six assists. Jayson Tatum had 22 points, nine boards and six assists. Last season, they went 37-4 at TD Garden during the regular season and 9-2 in the playoffs en route to the NBA championship. Clint Capela had 11 points and 13 rebounds as the Hawks opened a six-game trip by handing the reeling Raptors their 10th consecutive loss. Scottie Barnes scored 19 points and RJ Barrett had 17, but the Raptors fell behind by more than 30 points and allowed more than 130 for the second straight game. Toronto gave up a franchise-worst 155 points in Thursday’s loss at Memphis. Young shot 7 for 13 from 3-point range, singlehandedly making as many shots from distance than the entire Raptors team, who combined to go 7 for 24. Toronto’s Bruce Brown made his season debut after sitting out the first 31 games recovering from right knee surgery. Brown soared for a one-handed dunk for his first points shortly after entering the game in the first quarter. He finished with 12 points in 19 minutes. THUNDER 130, GRIZZLIES 106 OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points and Oklahoma City won their 11th straight game, beating short-handed Memphis in a matchup of Western Conference leaders that turned lopsided before halftime. Rookie Ajay Mitchell scored 17 points, Aaron Wiggins contributed 16 and Jalen Williams added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Thunder (26-5), who opened a five-game lead over second-place Memphis. Gilgeous-Alexander made 14 of 19 shots to go along with seven assists, six rebounds and a team-high four blocks. He sat most of the fourth quarter. Oklahoma City blocked nine shots, including three by center Isaiah Hartenstein. The Thunder led 76-50 at halftime behind 23 points from Gilgeous-Alexander and 12 each from Mitchell and Kenrich Williams, who combined to go 5 for 7 on 3-point shots. Desmond Bane had 22 points and nine rebounds for Memphis (22-11), which played without star Ja Morant (shoulder) and Zach Edey, the team’s No. 9 overall draft pick, who was in concussion protocol. Jay Huff added 17 points but Jaren Jackson Jr., the team’s leading scorer at 21.9 points per game, managed 13 points on 3-of-17 shooting. After DiVincenzo made one of two free throws with 12.1 seconds left, the Spurs had one more possession down 112-110. San Antonio found a wide-open Jeremy Sochan for 3, but he came up short. Wembanyama led San Antonio with 34 points and eight rebounds. Harrison Barnes had 24 points, Devin Vassell had 22 and Chris Paul dished out 14 assists. The Associated PressTORONTO, Dec. 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Purpose Investments Inc. (“Purpose”) announced today that it has decided to terminate (“the Fund”) at the close of business on or about March 14, 2025 (the “Termination Date”). It is anticipated that the ETF units of Purpose Marijuana Opportunities Fund will be voluntarily delisted from the Cboe Canada Exchange at the close of business on or about March 12, 2025 (the “Delisting Date”). The decision to close the Fund was driven primarily by the Fund’s relatively low assets under management, which has made it difficult to efficiently manage the Fund in accordance with its intended investment objective. As a result, in the view of Purpose, the termination is in the best interest of unitholders. Unitholders that hold Class A Units, Class F Units or ETF Units (collectively, “Units”) will have the option to redeem their Units at net asset value on or prior to the Termination Date. There will be no fees or redemption charges applicable to such redemptions. Holders of ETF Units of the Fund may continue to trade their ETF Units on the Cboe Canada Exchange until the Delisting Date. All units not redeemed prior to the Fund’s closure will be automatically redeemed at that time at net asset value, in accordance with the terms of the master declaration of trust of the Fund. Units still outstanding at 4:00 p.m. EST on the Termination Date will be automatically redeemed, with the proceeds either deposited into the unitholder’s account or a cheque mailed directly to the unitholder or to their dealer, nominee or intermediary, as applicable. If required, a final distribution for the Fund will occur on or about the Termination Date. There may be tax implications for unitholders with respect to any disposition of Units. We strongly urge unitholders to contact their financial advisor to discuss the financial and tax implications associated with a redemption of Units and the termination of the Fund. Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100 ATLANTA (AP) — Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died. He was 100 years old and had spent more than a year in hospice care. The Georgia peanut farmer served one turbulent term in the White House before building a reputation as a global humanitarian and champion of democracy. He defeated President Gerald Ford in 1976 promising to restore trust in government but lost to Ronald Reagan four years later amid soaring inflation, gas station lines and the Iran hostage crisis. He and his wife Rosalynn then formed The Carter Center, and he earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most internationally engaged of former presidents. The Carter Center said he died peacefully Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. Jimmy Carter: Many evolutions for a centenarian ‘citizen of the world’ PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — The 39th and longest-lived U.S. president, James Earl Carter Jr., died Sunday at the age of 100. His life ended where it began, in Plains, Georgia. He left and returned to the tiny town many times as he climbed to the nation’s highest office and lost it after four tumultuous years. Carter spent the next 40 years setting new standards for what a former president can do. Carter wrote nearly a decade ago that he found all the phases of his life challenging but also successful and enjoyable. The Democrat's principled but pragmatic approach defied American political labels, especially the idea that one-term presidents are failures. Jetliner skids off runway and bursts into flames while landing in South Korea, killing 179 SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A jetliner skidded off a runway, slammed into a concrete fence and burst into flames in South Korea after its landing gear apparently failed to deploy. Officials said all but two of the 181 people on board were killed Sunday in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters. The 737-800 operated by Jeju Air plane arrived from Bangkok and crashed while attempting to land in the town of Muan, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) south of Seoul. Footage of the crash aired by South Korean television channels showed the plane skidding across the airstrip at high speed, evidently with its landing gear still closed. Tornadoes in Texas and Mississippi kill 2 and injure 6 as severe weather system moves east HOUSTON (AP) — A strong storm system is threatening to whip up tornadoes in parts of the U.S. Southeast, a day after severe weather claimed at least two lives as twisters touched down in Texas and Mississippi. Strong storms moving eastward Sunday are expected to continue producing gusty, damaging winds, hail and tornadoes through Sunday. That is according to National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira. So far, the line of severe weather has led to about 40 tornado reports from southeastern Texas to Alabama, Pereira said, but those reports remain unconfirmed until surveys of damage are completed. Israeli hospital says Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — An Israeli hospital says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has undergone successful prostate surgery. Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center said his prostate was removed late Sunday and that he was recovering. Netanyahu’s office had said Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a close ally, would serve as acting prime minister during the procedure. Doctors ordered the operation after detecting an infection last week. Netanyahu is expected to remain hospitalized for several days. With so much at stake, Netanyahu’s health in wartime is a concern for both Israelis and the wider world. Syria's de facto leader says it could take up to 4 years to hold elections BEIRUT (AP) — Syria’s de facto leader has said it could take up to four years to hold elections in Syria, and that he plans on dissolving his Islamist group that led the country’s insurgency at an anticipated national dialogue summit for the country. Ahmad al-Sharaa, who leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the group leading the new authority in Syria, made the remarks in an interview Sunday. That's according to the Saudi television network Al-Arabiyya. It comes almost a month after a lightning insurgency led by HTS overthrew President Bashar Assad’s decades-long rule, ending the country’s uprising-turned civil war that started back in 2011. The baby's father says the 20-day-old child was found with his head as “cold as ice” Sunday morning in their tent. The baby’s twin brother was moved to the intensive care unit of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Their father says the twins were born one month premature and spent just a day in hospital, which like other Gaza health centers has been overwhelmed and only partially functions. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Looking at Ohio State's schedule at the start of the season, the game against Indiana in late November didn't stand out. The Hoosiers haven't been a contender in the Big Ten for decades and were terrible last year, so it was logical to think about this game as a throwaway, one that wouldn't require a lot of heavy lifting for the Buckeyes as they schemed for revenge against Michigan the following week. Instead, the college football world will get a treat instead of a dud on Saturday when undefeated No. 5 Indiana plays No. 2 Ohio State at the Horseshoe, a place where the Hoosiers haven't won a game since Ronald Reagan was president. Indiana (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten, No. 5 CFP) is one the most uplifting stories of the season. Behind Ohio University transfer quarterback Kurtis Rourke, the Hoosiers are enjoying their best season since 1967 when they finished 9-2 and shared the Big Ten title with Purdue and Minnesota. People are also reading... They haven't even sniffed a conference crown since. The Buckeyes (9-1, 6-1, No. 2 CFP) are doing what they were expected to do. Their only stumble this season was a nail-biter of a 32-31 loss to now-No. 1 Oregon. Ohio State hasn't dropped below No. 4 in the AP Top 25 all season. "We saw Indiana becoming a big game, now a Top 5 matchup," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said this week. “Our guys are fired up for this one and know this is a must-win for us. We’ve got to go win this game to play in Indianapolis (in the Big Ten championship). I know the team, the coaches, everybody in this building, the fans know what kind of game this is, and we’ve got to bring it on Saturday.” Oregon has already clinched one of the spots in the conference title game. If Indiana beats Ohio State — the only nationally ranked team on its schedule this year — and closes out the season with a win over Purdue, the Hoosiers will be in the Big Ten championship for the first time since the inception of the game in 2011. If Ohio State wins out, it will return to the conference title game for the first time since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season — and get a rematch with the Ducks. Ohio State has a 28-game winning streak against Indiana, dating back to 1991. That's the longest active winning streak of one team over another in Division I football. Plug and play Ohio State has enjoyed an embarrassment of wealth at skill positions. Last week it was receiver Carnell Tate who caught two touchdowns from Will Howard in the 31-7 win over Northwestern. True freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith has a TD catch in all but two games this season and leads the team with 865 receiving yards and nine scores. Four-year player Emeka Egbuka is right behind him with 612 yards and eight TDs. Running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson have combined for 1,388 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. “The thing about this team here is that they’re not worried about individual accolades or anything like this, especially late in the season,” Day said. “They’re focused on winning, and they want to play for each other. And when you have that, you have a chance.” Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!
