An encampment protest was held on the university campus to show opposition to Israel's ongoing military actions in Gaza and draw attention to the university's funding of companies, organizations or research linked to arms development or military applications. The encampment ended in mid-July but the issues continue to be raised, including at the University Board of Governors meeting on Thursday morning. Lynn Logan is Vice-President of Operations and Finance at Western and responded to an inquiry from board member Noah Zabian, "we are hearing, certainly, from the community, around the human rights issues.” Logan told the Board of Governors the military and arms divestment request is one the university has only just begun to consider, "The Investment Committee is considering it, how long it will take us to actually do the research and to the due diligence that we need to bring forward, a framework or potential resolution for Western, I can't speak to." Western VP of Operations and Finance responds to a question about divestment (Gerry Dewan/CTV News London) Logan indicated it could take some time though, with the Investment Committee meeting only four times a year. Those campaigning for divestment linked to environmental concerns say they're all too familiar with that message. Gisele Hachey has been part of the effort to secure fossil fuel divestment, "at least five years, we've been requesting divestment - and that is just from fossil fuels, and they have not put forward any substantial action or motion towards doing that." Student Jessica Roberts said that when the encampment ended it was the expectation of the organizers that there would be accelerated efforts to try and address the concerns raised, "the divestment coalition took down the encampment to potentially - hopefully - continue conversations in good faith. But it was not met by any sort of action." The board meeting was on the third floor of the Interdisciplinary Research building. Gisele Hachey, Jessica Roberts and Nora Vincent were on the ground floor handing out flyers to those heading to the meeting. The flyers contained a letter that was sent to Western President Alan Shepard that they say didn’t receive a response. The flyers were stamped with the messages 'We asked.. No answer,' and, 'ignored but not silent.' Sample of a flyer distributed to meeting attendees Hachey said they were soon approached by Western University security, "they asked for our student cards - that our student cards are property of Western, actually, so we should hand them over and we need to hand them over." The trio declined and said they would leave, but the exchange didn’t end there. According to Hachey, "they said no, you should identify yourselves. You need to identify yourselves or we can identify you by other means." Hachey said at that point they left the building. CTV News requested an interview with Alan Shepard and with Lynn Logan at the conclusion of the meeting but were told by a member of the communications team that they were not available to speak with us. With a focus on early detection and cutting-edge diagnostics, Cerba Lancet Nigeria is poised to reshape the healthcare landscape, offering hope for a system heavily reliant on personal funds and the growing burden of chronic diseases. The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, at the Cerba Lancet Nigeria grand opening and new name unveiling in Lagos, praised the facility for its potential to transform healthcare delivery. “Testing before treatment is crucial. Using laboratories to define treatment strategies ensures we avoid the misuse of antimicrobials and reduce the burden of preventable diseases,” Abayomi stated. He called on Cerba Lancet to expand its local testing capacity to reduce reliance on foreign laboratories, ensuring quicker and more cost-effective diagnostics. “Building local capacity is key to improving healthcare outcomes and addressing the challenges of out-of-pocket spending,” he added. The minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, also commended the initiative, describing it as a “game-changer” for Nigerians. He urged Cerba Lancet Nigeria to partner with universities to enhance medical research and training. CEO of Cerba Lancet Nigeria, Dr. Olayemi Dawodu, emphasised the company’s commitment to preventive healthcare, particularly in early detection of conditions like hypertension and diabetes. “Preventive care not only improves health outcomes but also alleviates the financial strain on individuals and the healthcare system,” Dawodu noted. Cerba Lancet’s CEO further outlined partnerships with Health Management Organizations (HMOs) and local communities to make diagnostics accessible and affordable, reinforcing the company’s mission to extend the average Nigerian lifespan. Operating in 14 African countries, Cerba Lancet Africa’s ambition is to decentralize diagnostics and deliver world-class services locally. Legal experts ripped apart Donald Trump's latest request to have his guilty verdict in New York tossed, in which he cited Hunter Biden's sweeping pardon. Trump's lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the guilty verdict , handed down by a New York state jury in May. The questionable filing prompted legal analysts to post takedowns on social media and say they expected the judge will ignore the request. In 72 pages , the lawyers cite Trump's case in federal court and the opinion rules of the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel. However, rules for federal prosecutors don't bind Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, as that case is in a state court. “Since DA Bragg took office, he has engaged in ‘precisely the type of political theater’ that President Biden condemned," the filing said. Former ethics czar Norm Eisen soundly trounced that claim in a Bluesky thread . ALSO READ: Will Trump back the FBI’s battle against domestic extremists? He won’t say. Eisen later pointed out that Trump's lawyers even went so far as to "invent a new constitutional category of pre-presidential privileges, arguing that the case must be dismissed bc it 'disrupts his transition efforts and his preparations.'" As Eisen explains, there's no such law. As for the Biden pardon, Reuters judicial reporter Brad Heath concluded the claim, which appears on "the first page of this filing," was likely "written for an audience other than the judge." Lawfare's senior editor, Roger Parloff , posted a screen capture on X revealing, " Trump asks that if Justice Merchan plans to deny his now two pending motions to dismiss and schedule a sentencing that grants Trump a 2-week stay so he can seek a federal injunction." The organization State Democracy Defenders Action released a statement saying, "Trump, like everyone else, should be held accountable for his crimes."SAN DIEGO, Dec. 03, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Robbins LLP reminds investors that a class action was filed on behalf of all persons and entities that purchased or otherwise acquired Xerox Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: XRX) securities between January 25, 2024 and October 28, 2024. Xerox and its subsidiaries offer workplace technology that integrates hardware, services, and software for enterprises in the Americas, and internationally. For more information, submit a form , email attorney Aaron Dumas, Jr., or give us a call at (800) 350-6003. The Allegations: Robbins LLP is Investigating Allegations that Xerox Holdings Corporation (XRX) Misled Investors Regarding its Business Prospects According to the complaint, during the class period, defendants failed to disclose to investors that: (1) after a large workforce reduction, the Company’s salesforce was reorganized with new territory assignments and account coverage; (2) as a result, the Company’s salesforce productivity was disrupted; (3) as a result, the Company had a lower rate of sell-through of older products; (4) the difficulties in flushing out older product would delay the launch of key products; and (5) therefore, Xerox was likely to experience lower sales and revenue. Plaintiff alleges that on October 29, 2024, Xerox revealed “lower-than-expected improvements in sales force productivity” and “delays in the global launch of two new products” had led to “sales underperformance.” The Company disclosed that for third quarter 2024, quarterly revenue was down 7.5% year-over-year to $1.53 billion, net loss fell to -$1.2 billion (down $1.3 billion year-over-year), and equipment sales declined 12.2% year over year to $339 million. In a corresponding earnings call, the Company’s COO revealed the product delay was in fact a “forecasting issue” where the Company “had higher expectations that we were going to flush through the older product” which it needed to “sell through” in order to “make those transitions.” On this news, the Company’s share price fell $1.79, or 17.41%, to close at $8.49 per share on October 29, 2024.
