OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested Monday that Ottawa will retaliate against Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs with counter-tariffs to try to reverse threatened American surcharges on Canadian exports he said would be “devastating” for the economy. In remarks to the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, Trudeau did not specify how extensively his government would levy import duties on American goods to “punch back,” but he referenced Canada’s strategic counter-tariffs in 2018 that were “politically impactful to the president’s party and colleagues.” As the North American free trade pact negotiations were stalling in 2018, Trump slapped 10 per cent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products, citing supposed national security risks. Canada retaliated, more than $16 billion in dollar-for-dollar tariffs on a range of American imports. Tariffs were eventually on both sides. Newly re-elected, Trump has again vowed to use tariffs, this time to force Canada and Mexico to tighten border security against illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling. Trump and his team also say tariffs would boost domestic manufacturing sectors, entice foreign investors to open plants in the U.S., and raise billions in federal revenue to pay off the U.S. debt. “Let’s not kid ourselves,” Trudeau said Monday, “25 per cent tariffs on everything going to the United States would be devastating for the Canadian economy,” and would mean “real hardship for Americans as well.” “Part of” Canada’s argument will be that tariffs jack up prices on Canadian goods shipped to the U.S., Trudeau said. “The other part is we will, of course, as we did eight years ago, respond to unfair tariffs in a number of ways.” “We’re still looking at the right ways to respond,” he added. “But our responses to the unfair steel and aluminum tariffs were what ended up lifting those tariffs last time,” he said, hinting strongly they would again. “It wasn’t that Americans were paying more for their steel and aluminum — although that was annoying to some people in the States. It was the fact that we put tariffs on bourbon and Harley Davidsons and playing cards and Heinz ketchup and cherries and a number of other things, that were very carefully targeted because they were politically impactful to the president’s party and colleagues, was how we were able to punch back in a way that was actually felt by Americans.” At that time, Canada also filed a trade with the World Trade Organization, and did a full-court press to lobby American business, union, political and legislative allies to persuade the White House to reverse course. The prime minister — who has until now suggested his team is well experienced in dealing with Trump — acknowledged that handling Trump 2.0 will be “more challenging” because “they are coming in with a lot clearer set of ideas of what they want to do right away than they had last time. But we can do this.” Trudeau again called for a united Canadian front, without naming Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who last week Trudeau said was playing politics. The prime minister said “one of the strongest voices last time around Team Canada was actually Premier Scott Moe of Saskatchewan ... no big fan of mine” but someone Trudeau said “complemented” Ottawa’s arguments. Despite Trump’s mandate, there are “so many diverging interests in the United States” that if Canada can unite and be “thoughtful and strategic and firm in our approach, as we succeeded in last time,” Trudeau said the government’s efforts will be once again successful. But Trudeau’s appeals and criticisms have failed to win Poilievre over. A day earlier, Poilievre repeatedly said Trudeau has “lost control” of the border, immigration, crime and drugs, and “the bottom line is that Justin Trudeau is a weak leader and he gains no respect from countries all around the world.” Asked whether Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, part of Poilievre’s caucus, advocated against the imposition of U.S. tariffs when he met with Trump’s vice-president elect JD Vance , Poilievre said he did not have an answer because he was personally “not at that meeting.”How major US stock indexes fared Monday, 12/9/2024Article content Caitlin Clark raised the profile of women’s basketball to unprecedented levels in both the college ranks and the WNBA, and Tuesday she was named the AP Female Athlete of the Year for her impact on and off the court. After leading Iowa to the national championship game, Clark was the top pick in the WNBA draft as expected and went on to win rookie of the year honors in the league. Fans packed sold-out arenas and millions of television viewers tuned in to follow her journey. Clark’s exploits were far reaching, casting a light on other women’s sports leagues along the way. A group of 74 sports journalists from The Associated Press and its members voted on the award. Clark received 35 votes, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles was second with 25 and boxer Imane Khelif was third, getting four votes. Clark is only the fourth women’s basketball player to be honored as the female athlete of the year since it was first presented in 1931, joining Sheryl Swoopes (1993), Rebecca Lobo (1995) and Candace Parker (2008, 2021). “I grew up a fan of Candace Parker and the people who came before me and to be honored in this way, is super special and I’m thankful,” Clark said in a phone interview. “It was a great year for women’s basketball and women’s sports.” Shohei Ohtani won the AP Male Athlete of the Year on Monday for the third time. Clark broke the NCAA Division I career scoring record for both men and women finishing her career with 3,951 points while guiding Iowa to its second consecutive national championship game. After her Hawkeyes lost to South Carolina for the title, Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley took the mic during her team’s celebration and said, “I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport.” For all the success Clark has had and the attention she has brought to women’s basketball, she is often the centerpiece of debates and online toxicity towards her and other players in the league. For her part, Clark has disavowed the toxic discourse. Lobo also has been impressed with the way the 22-year-old Clark has handled the pressure and attention that has come her way. “I would say she’s navigated it almost flawlessly. she hasn’t had an big missteps or misspeaks at a time you’re under constant scrutiny,” Lobo said. “She’s seemed to say and do all the right things. That’s just incredible at a time when it’s constant attention and scrutiny. She has not done anything to tarnish this sort of mild persona she has.” As Clark handled the praise — and the backlash — during the heat of competition, it was hard for her to appreciate just what she was able accomplish over the past year. But after having time to reflect on the whirlwind tour, she appreciates those who were there alongside her for the ride. “I’m thankful for the people I got to do it with,” Clark said. “A year ago I was still in the early part of my senior year in college. ... How fast things change, and now I can see how great a college season it was.” Iowa sold out all of its games at home and on the road with Clark as the main attraction. That momentum continued into the pros. Her No. 22 jersey was prevalent wherever she played during her rookie season and will be retired at Iowa. “You’d be remiss not to acknowledge how crazy her fan base is and the eyes she gets with everything she does,” said Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, who was often spotted courtside at Clark’s Indiana Fever games. “It’s a different type of popularity, she’s one of the most popular athletes in the world. It’s not just women’s sports anymore. “It’s really cool to see and she just handles it with such grace.” Clark said she enjoys spending time with fans at games, usually taking a few minutes before and after games to sign autographs. “For me it’s still really fun,” she said. “Whether it’s 15 seconds or 10 seconds or 5 seconds can be very impactful in a young girl and young boys life. Seeing the fans going crazy an hour before tipoff, I never take that for granted. That’s super cool and I never want that to go away.” After a slow start to her WNBA career, Clark eventually found her stride there too. She set the single-game assist record with 19 and also had 337 assists on the season to break that mark as well. Clark, known for her logo-distance 3-pointers, was the fastest player to reach 100 3’s when she did it in 34 games which helped Indiana reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Lobo, who won the AP female athlete of the year award after lifting UConn to its first national championship, was on the court for launch of the WNBA two years later. The ESPN analyst sees Clark’s ascension as something different. “She’s brought unprecedented attention both in the building, but also viewership to the sport that was worthy of it but didn’t have it yet,” Lobo said. “There’s never been anything like this. “That timeframe from 1995-97 was a baby step in the progression of it all. This is a giant leap forward. I’ve never seen anything like this. There’s more attention then the sports ever had.” The numbers have been record breaking when Clark is part of a broadcast: — TV viewership in the WNBA was up 300% thanks in large part to Clark with ABC, CBS, ION, ESPN, and ESPN2 all having record viewers when Fever games were on. — The NCAA women’s championship game outdrew the men on TV for the first time in the sport’s 42-year history with 18.9 million viewers tuning it to watch the event. It was the second most watched women’s sporting event outside of the Olympics in the history of U.S. television. — The 2024 WNBA draft was the most-watched in league history with 2.4 million viewers. Clark credits the community of women athletes for the popularity increase of women’s sports, saying “we” did this or “we” did that when asked about it. “It’s fascinating, you don’t always appreciate how many people 18 million is,” Clark said. “You see that number against a college football game or the Masters or whatever it is as far as the biggest sporting events in our country and it puts it in perspective. We outdrew the men’s Final Four.”TV Milestones: How much did it cost to own the latest TV?
Proper nutrition and physical activity are widely accepted tools in preventing chronic disease. However, some doctors have begun to embrace another tool: vagus nerve stimulation. Navaz Habib, a chiropractor certified in functional medicine, stresses the importance of diet and exercise, but the vagus nerve also plays a big role in his wellness strategy. He’s written two books on the subject, the most recent titled, “Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve.” The book explores the research, methods, and benefits of stimulating the vagus nerve, such as inflammation control, better immunity, and more. “It’s a very unique nerve,” Habib said. “It is the only cranial nerve that leaves the head cavity and the only nerve in the body that connects to essentially every visceral organ.” The name “vagus” comes from a Latin word that means wandering. When it’s working properly, the vagus nerve network presides over a diverse array of functions—influencing the immune, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, and endocrine systems. Modern Applications The Functionality of the Vagus Nerve “Our bodies cannot heal when we’re in a sympathetic fight or flight state. They need to enter that parasympathetic, rest, digest, and recovery state, and that’s where the healing process can occur,” he said. While significant scientific details regarding the vagus nerve have emerged in recent years, the fundamental understanding of its functions has been available for centuries, particularly in the realm of deep breathing techniques like pranic breathing found in yogic practices, according to J.P. Errico, a neuroimmunology expert. “Holding your breath and exhaling in a controlled manner stimulates the vagus nerve,” Errico told The Epoch Times. “When you’re only shallow breathing, because you’re stressed or in fight or flight mode, you’re not stimulating it, because you’re not getting that signal through those stretch receptors,” Errico added. In addition to deep breathing, other self-initiated techniques for stimulating the vagus nerve include humming, gargling, chanting, and singing. These methods promote stimulation through vibration rather than stretch receptors. Since the voice box is located near a branch of the vagus nerve that runs through the neck, these vocalizations can gradually induce a sense of peace and calm. However, keep in mind that these self-stimulating techniques work much slower than electrical stimulation. This is by design, Errico noted. Emerging Technologies for Vagus Nerve Stimulation “What I’ve found is when we use electrical stimulation, we get results far more quickly,” he said. “We’re able to accelerate the process of healing within the vagus nerve itself.” But Habib prefers another option. The device he uses on his patients and himself is a small handheld unit that runs between $300 and $500. This device, known as Truvaga, was developed by Errico, who has been in the medical device-making business since the 1990s and has more than 250 patents to his name. Errico said he had been mulling over the idea of a nerve-stimulating device for years following a brief but enlightening discussion with a neurosurgeon. “He was one of the very first people to start using deep brain stimulation to treat Parkinson’s and essential tremor. And I was absolutely flabbergasted when I saw the results of his surgeries,” Errico said. “By getting to the right location in the brain and stimulating it with the right parameters, he could stop a patient from shaking, and all the symptoms would go away with no side effects. That was pretty much as close to magic as I'd ever seen, and I knew that I wanted to get involved.” Clinical research for Errico’s vagus nerve stimulator began in 2006, and initial studies showed that his design was effective, but he wanted to create something more accessible than an implant. “We actually did FDA approved pilot studies that worked beautifully,” Errico said, “but what we realized was that it wasn’t very user friendly, and we needed to figure out a way to do it non invasively.” Subjects were “highly selected career linguists at the US Department of Defense’s premier language school.” “These are people who are motivated, focused, good at what they do, and we were still able to demonstrate in every application anywhere from a 25 to 40 percent improvement,” Errico said. “That acetylcholine moves throughout the brain, and it quiets any of those immune cells that happen to be distracted by inflammation. It really helps you focus. It really gets your brain working optimally,” he said. Errico details the science behind vagus nerve stimulation in his recent book, “The Vagus-Immune Connection.” While there are several reported benefits to vagus nerve stimulation, there is also a vulnerability to this nerve, as some people can inadvertently produce a negative reaction. Known as the vasovagal response—the condition can be brought on by pain or emotional upset, which can cause light-headedness, a sudden drop in blood pressure, and possibly fainting or syncope. But Errico ensures that this reaction won’t happen with Truvaga. Elizabeth Tringali, a board-certified physician assistant who runs an integrative family practice in West Palm Beach, Florida, says she’s been using it on her patients for about two years with good results. “It’s miraculous,” she said. Tringali mentions one patient—a 40-year-old woman who was having anxiety attacks. “She was flipping out,” Tringali said. “We called 911 just to make sure she wasn’t having a heart attack.” Within minutes after using the Truvaga device, the patient calmed down. “She told the paramedics they didn’t need to stay. She was like a new person,” Tringali said. Since vagus nerve stimulation can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, Tringali says Truvaga can be very helpful for patients stuck in sympathetic dominance. “We inherit these patients with all these chronic illnesses, and they just can’t get out of fight or flight from being sick for so many years,” she said. “They are on 20 medications and have tried everything under the sun.” Tringali lets patients try the device in her office, and if they like it, they may purchase a unit to use at home. She says some results are immediate, while others take time to manifest. How to Use Truvaga “It’s where you would feel for your pulse,” Errico said. “You place the two electrodes in that notch, and then you begin to turn up the amplitude. The very first thing you'll feel is a little tingling at the skin.” Errico says this particular place on the neck that the unit targets offers the best opportunity for stimulation. “That’s where the largest number of fibers are,” he said. A bit of contact gel (like the one used on an EKG machine) helps carry the current from the device to the skin. Users can control the amplitude of the device, typically setting it low when they first begin and turning it up once they get used to the feeling. Errico says even dogs like it. “As soon as they see the device, they'll roll over and expose their neck,” he said. “It calms them down. They like it.” The least expensive version of the device is called Truvaga 350. The drawback is that it has a limited number of uses (only 350 two-minute sessions or about six months worth of treatments if you use it twice a day). The pricier models have an unlimited number of uses but require an app installed on your phone.

Villa came into the game winless in eight matches in all competitions but they jumped back into the top half of the Premier League with a scintillating performance in the opening 45 minutes. Unai Emery has never gone nine matches without a win as manager but Brentford never posed a threat to prolong that run as Villa cashed in on a dominant first period with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash. Brentford have only managed one point away from home all season and Mikkel Damsgaard’s effort after the break proved to be in vain as their miserable run on the road continued. Tyrone Mings made his first start in the Premier League since August 2023 in place of Pau Torres while Leon Bailey was brought into the side following their heavy loss to Chelsea. Bees boss Thomas Frank opted for Vitaly Janelt and Yehor Yarmoliuk over Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen. Kevin Schade completed his first career hat-trick at the weekend and showed his confidence six minutes in when his drilled shot was deflected narrowly behind. It took a quarter of an hour but Villa began to knock the ball about and Watkins bent an effort towards goal but Mark Flekken was brought into action for the first time to collect. The tension inside Villa Park alleviated as the hosts took the lead in the 21st minute. Boubacar Kamara’s beautiful turn in the middle of the park set Watkins on his way and he teed up Rogers outside the box who whipped into the far corner in magnificent fashion. The hosts almost added a second straight away as Bailey got in behind the Bees back line but blasted straight at Flekken. Villa had another opportunity to go two in front when Ethan Pinnock dragged Watkins down inside the area and the penalty was eventually given by referee Lewis Smith. And England striker Watkins dusted himself down and snuck his spot-kick into the bottom right corner from 12 yards. Emery’s side showed no mercy and added a third 11 minutes before the break as Lucas Digne’s cross fell to Cash who was waiting at the back post to slam home. Things threatened to get worse for Brentford after the interval when Flekken came to punch Youri Tielemans’ corner away but almost diverted it into his own goal before he got back to push behind for a corner. The Bees got themselves on the scoresheet in the 54th minute as Bryan Mbeumo’s cross was diverted into the path of Damsgaard who cut back and lashed high into the net. Watkins wasted an opportunity to restore Villa’s three-goal advantage as he pounced on a loose pass but aimed straight at Flekken. The visiting goalkeeper was again called on to deny substitute Jhon Duran but Villa settle dfor three goals as they returned to winning ways.AKTU’s centre to offer engineering courses

PTI General Secretary Dr Masroor Sial made a series of visits to different districts of Sindh in an effort to strengthen the party's grassroots presence in Sindh. The move included workers' conventions, peaceful protests demanding the release of party chairman Imran Khan, and efforts to restore the party's "stolen mandate." Dr Sial was accompanied by other PTI leaders, including Ashfaq Ahmed Khalifa, Sam Khan, Moazzam Khan, Mola Bux Soomro, and Nazish Fatima. They toured Karachi, Thatta, Naushahro Feroze, Kandiaro, Khairpur, Dadu, and other cities over a span of five days. The PTI delegates were warmly welcomed by the party's leadership from various divisions, including Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Sukkur. During the tours, the PTI leaders engaged with party workers, discussing strategies to bolster the organisation at the grassroots level. Worker conventions were held in several cities, and peaceful protests were organised to call for the release of Imran Khan and the restoration of the party's "stolen mandate." Addressing these gatherings, Dr Sial claimed that PTI was the largest political party of the country, adding that its mandate in the recent elections was "snatched through a conspiracy." The current government has been imposed on people through illegitimate means, triggering economic turmoil, skyrocketing inflation, and rampant corruption, he added. "Illegal governments have bankrupted the country and deprived the people of basic sustenance." He criticised the PPP and PML-N, saying that their political lifelines had come to an end. "The upcoming government will be led by PTI, with Imran Khan as Prime Minister," he claimed. Dr Sial described Sindh's law and order situation as dismal.
