(The Center Square) – Although it remains unclear how many Democratic Senators will vote for the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, some House members in the party have explained why they voted yes, despite a controversial provision restricting military-funded transgender surgeries for minors. The nearly $900 billion bill passed the House 281-140 Wednesday, with 200 Republicans and 81 Democrats voting in favor versus 124 Democrats and 16 Republicans voting against it. Most of the NDAA consists of bipartisan agreements, such as pay raises for service members, strengthened ties with U.S. allies, and funding of new military technology. But a critical point of contention is a Republican addition that would prohibit the military’s health program from covering any gender dysphoria treatments on minors that could "result in sterilization.” The must-pass bill is so critical that nearly 40% of House Democrats voted in favor–but not without expressing their disappointment. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., condemned Republican colleagues who, she said, “chose to sully this bill with political culture wars;” nevertheless, she voted in favor. “While it doesn't address everything we asked for and consider important, including the full ability of parents to make their own decisions about healthcare for their children, it marks a rare moment of productive bipartisan agreement on what is arguably the most crucial legislation we take up as a body each year,” Houlahan said. The bill’s provision does not forbid service members’ children from receiving transgender therapy. It forbids the military’s health insurance provider, TRICARE, from covering treatments on minors that “may result in sterilization.” Reps. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, and Terri Sewell, D-Ala., also voted in favor of the bill despite their displeasure at the ban. “The NDAA is a hugely important bill. We had to pass it, which is why I voted yes,” Landsman posted on X Friday. “However, the anti-trans language that was attached to it was mean and awful and should never have been included.” “I have serious concerns about some remaining provisions that were placed in the bill for political purposes,” Sewell said Wednesday. “Still, the responsibility to support our service members and provide for our national security is one that I do not take lightly, which is why I ultimately chose to support the bill.” Besides the importance of annual military funding, another reason some House Democrats assented to the legislation is because they were successful in axing other House Republican amendments, such as a plan to eliminate reimbursements for service members who travel to obtain abortions. The Senate is expected to pass the bill within the next few days, after which President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law.China Restricted Young People From Video Games. NCSOFT Achieves Industry-Leading ESG Rating for Four Consecutive YearsG.I. Joe defined the term "action figure" all the way back in 1964. Since then, he’s been in TV shows, movies, and a few controversies. These stories originally aired on WAGA on November 29, 1983 and WWOR on February 9, 1989. G.I. Joe has been fighting battles in kids’ living rooms and bedrooms for 60 years now. Originally a masculine response to Barbie, the "Real American Hero" has now taken on a life of his own. "G.I. Joe" is not actually one character, but a line of action figures meant to represent a cross-service team of military servicemen and specialists. The initial line, launched in 1964, included Action Soldier, Action Sailor, Action Pilot, and Action Marine. One of the original G.I. Joe action figures (WTTG) Since then, the product line has expanded to include dozens of characters – including both heroes and enemies – featured in TV shows, movies, and video games. The name itself is derived from the usage of "G.I. Joe" as a term for the generic U.S. soldier, which itself was derived from the more general term "G.I." that dates back to World War I. After Mattel’s Barbie burst onto the toy scene in 1959, rival Hasbro was eager for a success of its own. But most experts at the time did not believe that boys would play with a doll. That’s when Stanley Weston, a Manhattan licensing agent, came up with the idea of a poseable toy soldier. He licensed the idea to Hasbro in 1963 for $100,000 – the equivalent of over $1,000,000 today. Don Levine, credited with helping invent G.I. Joe, with an original figure (right) and reissue (left). (WTTG) Hasbro was careful to avoid the word – or even the implication – that G.I. Joes were dolls. They even popularized a new term to help market it. "Definitely it's not a doll," explained Don Levine, the Hasbro vice president who created the original prototype figure. "It's an action figure." The giant U.S.S. Flagg aircraft carrier playset was coveted by countless boys in the 1980s. (Photo By John Prieto/The Denver Post, Sept. 24, 1987 via Getty Images) For years, G.I. Joe figures were 12 inches tall – roughly the same size as Barbie and Ken. The two product lines naturally crossed paths in homes with young boys and girls. When asked in 1996 what the difference was between G.I. Joe and Ken, Levine explained it was the fact that the G.I. Joe figures could be moved and posed using 19 individual joints. "Ken’s a doll," Levine chuckled. "The difference is that [G.I. Joe] is an articulated action figure and basically the first ever made in the USA. All of the other action figures we see on the counters today started from the original G.I. Joe." A G.I. Joe "COBRA" figure stands on display in the Hasbro showroom during the International Toy Fair, Monday, Feb. 12, 2007 in New York. (Photo by Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images) For the 1982 launch of the smaller toy figures and Marvel Comic series, which introduced the COBRA terrorist nemesis, Hasbro hired Marvel Productions to produce a series of animated TV commercials. That eventually grew into a miniseries and then a full TV series. Another TV series followed in 1989, along with feature-length films. That led some parents and watchdogs to criticize the use of violence to market children’s toys. "There is some research that says a child, by the time they’re age 18, has witnessed 18,000 murders on TV – most of them on Saturday morning," Stu Cohen of the North Dekalb Family and Children's Clinic told WAGA-TV in 1983. "G.I. Joe toys teach kids again that the only way to solve problems is through violence and that there’s always a winner, instead of both people being willing to compromise," one parent told KTBC-TV at a 1988 protest in Austin, Texas. Joe: Retaliation" movie toy line on February 13, 2012 in New York City. (Photo by Theo Wargo/Getty Images for Hasbro) More recently, several live-action films were also produced, featuring big-name actors like Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, Bruce Willis, and Dwayne Johnson. Hasbro still sells a line of 6-inch G.I. Joe toys that look a lot different from the classic 1964 versions but retain the multi-joint poseability of the originals. Elsewhere, a strong internet resale market exists for the hundreds of characters produced through the years. Next up for G.I. Joe could be a crossover movie with the Transformers toy line, supposedly confirmed by Paramount for release in 2025 or 2026, according to IGN . Information for this story came from the FOX Television Station broadcast archives, including a 1996 interview with Don Levine. Facts from Hasbro, Wikipedia, and IGN are were also included. If Barbie was a real person, she'd be approaching retirement. But she's still going strong. In this LiveNOW & Then full episode, we look back at Barbie's first appearances on TV and the character's impact on popular culture.

Q&A: Former Gov. Jerry Brown weighs in on Kamala Harris’ loss, top issues facing CaliforniaA stroke changed a teacher’s life. How a new electrical device is helping her moveAlabama football has 11 names in the NCAA transfer portal, including seven from its offense. Justice Haynes, a former five-star in the 2023 class from Buford, Ga., became the latest name Friday to enter the portal. The talented running back recorded 168 yards rushing and two touchdowns as a freshman on Alabama’s 2023 Southeastern Conference Championship team. Nick Sabam was giddy about Haynes in spring practice and his excitement for him continued into the season. Much was expected from Haynes this season and he totaled seven rushing scores and 448 yards, but did he have enough opportunities to showcase his talents? Statistics would say no as he averaged six carries per game. He is heading to place where he can be the featured back, but what does it mean for Alabama’s running back room? Jam Miller is the featured guy in the backfield. He finished the regular season with 641 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 135 carries. The coaching staff trusted Miller more with the ball as he averaged nearly 12 carries a game (11.25). He was an exceptional pass-blocker and caught 13 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. If Miller chooses to forgo the NFL Draft and return for his senior season, he would be the biggest voice in the running back room. Richard Young, a former 5-star from the 2023 class, would be the next important back. Young, a native Floridian, would be fully healthy next season — starting in the spring. He was banged up at times this season; however, he finished with 25 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Young brings a physicality to him, but he also has some speed. He needs to develop more breakaway speed on big runs to be a home run hitter. Daniel Hill and Kevin Riley were freshmen this season, but now it’s time for them to be called on more. Hill, a native Mississippian, has a rushing touchdown as a power back. Riley, a Tuscaloosa native, has more speed and explosiveness. Alabama also has Akylin Dear, a freshman signee from Mississippi, in the room too. It will be interesting to see how he fits the rotation. It does not feel good to lose Haynes, but Alabama has not had a game-breaker at running back since Jahmyr Gibbs. Miller will be good for the Tide and Young has the potential, but should Alabama hit the portal for a back? We will see what the coaches do.
