99bet login app A coalition of federal opposition lawmakers has alleged a conspiracy among some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and 24 state party chairmen to extend the tenure of the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, until 2027. The lawmakers made the accusation during a press conference in Akokwa, Imo State, on Sunday evening. They claimed the move was a deliberate strategy to undermine the PDP and weaken its chances in future elections. The spokesman for the group and member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency, Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, said, “Today, our nation is facing different challenges, both economic and political. But there’s something that’s missing in all these problems and that’s a vibrant and responsive and responsible opposition. “We have the PDP that’s supposed to lead the opposition, but what we have are political charlatans hijacking the heartbeat of the opposition party and turning it into an errand platform for the ruling party. “Some of you called me yesterday after the meeting the governors had in Jos and said it’s all over for the PDP. It’s very shameful that a party that was founded in 1998 by the great efforts of our founding fathers-the likes of Alex Ekwueme, Jerry Gana, Atiku Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo, and so many others, came together and ended 16 years of military rule. “That political party is what these guys are playing Akara with. Umar Damagun and Samuel Anyanwu are now messing up with and forgetting the sacred expectation of Nigerian people.” He alleged that plans had been perfected to prevent the National Executive Committee from selecting a substantive chairman from the North Central zone, as originally intended. He added, “They want Umar Damagum to continue to parade himself as the National Chairman and stay in office till 2027 so they can foist on us a weakling that will be presidential candidate. “We have impostors among us who have no honour and decency. The ruling party will be laughing at them now that they want to sabotage their own party. “First, they said there was a Sallah holiday, and they shifted it. Since last year, they kept on shifting the NEC meeting. Till now, no NEC meeting. They keep on giving different excuses. The national leaders of PDP are frolicking with APC leaders, going to London having meetings with APC leadership.” He accused the party leadership of nurturing a political alliance with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.Thousands of Afghans on Thursday attended the funeral of the refugees minister, AFP journalists saw, after he was killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul the day before in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group. The Minister for Refugees and Repatriation, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, was killed on Wednesday afternoon in a suicide bombing at the ministry's offices in the Afghan capital. Thousands of men, many of them armed, gathered for Haqqani's funeral in his home village of Sarana, in a mountainous area of Paktia province, south of Kabul. The funeral included heavy security, with armoured vehicles, snipers and personnel manning the area and the road from Kabul, which was jammed with hundreds of cars as mourners travelled from surrounding provinces. Senior Taliban officials, including the Chief of Army Staff Qari Fasihuddin Fitrat, and Maulawi Abdul Kabir, political deputy of the prime minister's office, attended the funeral, according to an AFP team on site. The deceased's nephew, the powerful interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, also attended, along with foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. In a speech there, Muttaqi said the latest IS attacks had been planned "abroad", denouncing, without naming them, "countries harbouring" the organisation. "We call on all nations to work together to stop the common enemy, which does not recognise any kind of morality." In September, the Taliban authorities said IS had training camps in Balochistan province of Pakistan, which also regularly faces jihadist attacks. Haqqani, the highest ranked member of the Taliban government to be killed in an attack since their return to power, "was a big loss for us, the system and the nation", said Paktia resident Hedayatullah, 22. "May God protect our other leaders and keep them victorious." "Our leader... who had his life brutally taken away, achieved martyrdom," said Bostan, 53, haranguing the "cowardly attack" that killed Haqqani. The United Nations mission in Afghanistan condemned the attack on Thursday, offering condolences to the victims' families. "There can be no place for terrorism in the quest for stability," the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on X. The European Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also condemned the attack, along with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran. Haqqani -- who is on US and UN sanctions lists and never appeared without an automatic weapon in his hand -- was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of the feared Haqqani network responsible for some of the most violent attacks during the Taliban's two-decade insurgency. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a bomber detonated an explosive vest inside the ministry, according to a statement on its Amaq news agency, as translated by the SITE Intelligence Group. Taliban authorities had already blamed IS for the "cowardly attack" -- the first targeting a minister since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Violence has waned in Afghanistan since the Taliban forces took over the country that year, ending their war against US-led NATO coalition forces. However, the regional chapter of IS, known as Islamic State Khorasan, is active in Afghanistan and has regularly targeted civilians, foreigners and Taliban officials with gun and bomb attacks. bur-qb-sw/nroIndia's longest bull market has more room to run - Morgan Stanley

That's your chance to change your favourite news media. Fill in a short questionnaire Source: Legit.ngThe Pittsburgh Steelers have suffered three devastating losses in the past 11 days. While everyone expected the games against the Philadelphia Eagles , Baltimore Ravens , and Kansas City Chiefs to be the toughest of the year, few expected the team to look as inept as they did. This is especially worrisome as the Steelers have already secured a playoff spot. After the latest loss, word broke that several players were hinting that there is someone specific they hold responsible for the losses. The day after the Chiefs loss, Mark Kaboly from The Pat McAfee Show joined Pat McAfee and his team to discuss the disappointing contest. Kaboly said three losses in 11 days wasn't where the team saw themselves at this point of the season. He added that after the game, there were a lot of one-on-one conversations happening as the players tried to figure out what was going on with the once-successful team. Cam Heyward: “When 10 guys do their job and one guy doesn’t, we are screwed." McAfee asked him about the veiled comments from players, and Kaboly said he thinks someone is trying to do too much to the detriment of the entire defense. Captain Cameron Heyward seemed to imply the same thing by saying it is hard to be successful when 10 guys do their job, and one doesn't. This has led to rampant speculation about who that player is. "Apparently, this has been happening for a couple weeks now," said Kaboly. "I know Patrick Queen had mentioned it last week, about people doing their jobs, and not being in their right positions. But that's normally just player talk after a game, you know, 'We all have to be accountable.' But something was a little off yesterday after the game. You could tell people wanted to say something about somebody specific, but they bit their tongue. But they made it known that somebody, one, two, three people, who knows, are going outside of their capabilities maybe, trying to play maybe hero ball, and that's not really working very well in their goal of winning." Kaboly said there have been a lot of uncontested touchdowns. In his opinion, that usually means a communication error, as Patrick Queen indicated after the Week 16 loss to the Ravens. Those kinds of miscommunications are what you expect during the first couple of weeks of the season, but certainly not in the last few. Head Coach Mike Tomlin didn't pull any punches in his postgame press conference , calling their play "junior varsity." The Steelers need to figure out what has gone wrong during their mini-bye week before their final game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The losses have all but knocked them out of contention for winning the AFC North since the Ravens beat the Houston Texans. Now, the Steelers need to win a game that many thought would be irrelevant against the Bengals to hopefully face the Texans in the playoffs instead of the Ravens or the Buffalo Bills. Steelers Players Express Their Frustrations As Kaboly said, the players expressed their frustrations in the locker room after the game. That included TJ Watt , who echoed the sentiments of many others, saying they need to take a long look in the mirror and get back to work. DeShon Elliott , who the Steelers were relieved to have back on defense, said they must stop leaving opponents wide open. Calvin Austin III explained he finds a loss like this more frustrating because it feels like they gave the opponent the win. In addition to his comment about one player's lack of effort, Heyward added they have played like s**t the past three weeks. That's hard to argue with. Not much went right during these losses. They turned the ball over, failed to stop opposing offenses, continued to have slow starts that later stalled, and the offensive line seems to be regressing. They have their work cut out for them to be able to win a playoff game. Who do you think is playing "hero ball?" Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is seeking to have the draft laws passed without a single deal with the Greens after months of argument over housing, the environment, university fees, school funding and other reforms. Loading The approach reflects a crucial calculation that the Greens have lost ground in recent state and local government elections and are at risk of losing federal seats because voters think the party has moved too far to the left on economic policy and the Middle East. But in two significant retreats, Labor shelved a bill on Sunday that sought to crackdown on misinformation and did not put forward a long-awaited ban on gambling advertising after earlier saying it would unveil the package before the end of the year. Read more about the bills before the parliament in the final sitting week of the year here. 3.40am Here’s what to know about the new COP29 funding deal In the wee hours Sunday at the United Nations climate talks, countries from around the world reached an agreement on how rich countries can cough up the funds to support poor countries in the face of climate change. It’s a far-from-perfect arrangement, with many parties still deeply unsatisfied but some hopeful that the deal will be a step in the right direction. An attendee reacts during a closing plenary session at the COP29 UN Climate Summit. Credit: AP Here’s how they got there: What was the finance deal agreed at climate talks? Rich countries have agreed to pool together at least $300 billion a year by 2035. It’s not near the full amount of $1.3 trillion that developing countries were asking for, and that experts said was needed. But delegations more optimistic about the agreement said this deal is headed in the right direction, with hopes that more money flows in the future. What will the money be spent on? The deal decided in Baku replaces a previous agreement from 15 years ago that charged rich nations $100 billion a year to help the developing world with climate finance. The new number has similar aims: it will go toward the developing world’s long laundry list of to-dos to prepare for a warming world and keep it from getting hotter. That includes paying for the transition to clean energy and away from fossil fuels. Countries need funds to build up the infrastructure needed to deploy technologies like wind and solar power on a large scale. Loading Why was it so hard to get a deal? Election results around the world that herald a change in climate leadership, a few key players with motive to stall the talks and a disorganized host country all led to a final crunch that left few happy with a flawed compromise. Developing nations also faced some difficulties agreeing in the final hours. Meanwhile, activists ramped up the pressure: many urged negotiators to stay strong and asserted that no deal would be better than a bad deal. But ultimately the desire for a deal won out. AP 3.29am What’s making headlines By Josefine Ganko Good morning and welcome to the national news blog from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. My name is Josefine Ganko, I’ll be with you on the blog for the first half of the day. It’s Monday, November 25. Here’s what’s making headlines this morning. Pressure is on the Albanese government to make headway on its long list of stalled legislation during the final sitting week of 2024. Peter Dutton will use a private Coalition meeting to calm MPs who are fearful that Labor’s teen social media ban is a Trojan Horse for government control of the internet. A media storm threatens to thwart plans to transfer five of the Bali Nine drug traffickers to Australia by the end of the year after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese asked Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to approve the transfer during a meeting in Peru last week. Overseas, countries at the COP29 summit in Baku adopted a $460 billion a year global finance target on Sunday to help poorer nations cope with impacts of climate change. The GOP embrace of Hegseth came as another controversial Trump nominee, Matt Gaetz, withdrew from consideration for attorney general. Gaetz said it was clear he had become a “distraction” amid pressure on the House to release an ethics report about allegations of his own sexual misconduct. An attorney for two women has said that his clients told House Ethics Committee investigators that Gaetz paid them for sex on multiple occasions beginning in 2017, when Gaetz was a Florida congressman. Fresh questions over the two nominees’ pasts, and their treatment of women, arose with Republicans under pressure from Trump and his allies to quickly confirm his Cabinet. At the same time, his transition has so far balked at the vetting and background checks that have traditionally been required. While few Republican senators have publicly criticized any of Trump’s nominees, it became clear after Gaetz’s withdrawal that many had been harboring private concerns about him. Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, who served with Gaetz in the House, said it was a “positive move.” Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker said it was a “positive development.” Maine Sen. Susan Collins said Gaetz “put country first and I am pleased with his decision.” After meeting with Hegseth, though, Republicans rallied around him. “I think he’s going to be in pretty good shape,” said Wicker, who is expected to chair the Senate Armed Services Committee in the next Congress. Republican senators’ careful words, and their early reluctance to publicly question Trump’s picks, illustrated not only their fear of retribution from the incoming president but also some of their hopes that the confirmation process can proceed normally, with proper vetting and background checks that could potentially disqualify problematic nominees earlier. Gaetz withdrew after meeting with senators on Wednesday. Sen. Thom Tillis said Gaetz was “in a pressure cooker” when he decided to withdraw, but suggested that it would have little bearing on Trump’s other nominees. “Transactions — one at a time,” he said. As the Hegseth nomination proceeds, Republicans also appear to be betting that they won’t face much backlash for publicly setting aside the allegations of sexual misconduct — especially after Trump won election after being found liable for sexual abuse last year. Hegseth held a round of private meetings alongside incoming Vice President on Thursday in an attempt to shore up support and told reporters afterward: “The matter was fully investigated and I was completely cleared, and that’s where I’m gonna leave it.” A 22-page police report report late Wednesday offered the first detailed account of the allegations against him. A woman told police that she was sexually assaulted in 2017 by Hegseth after he took her phone, blocked the door to a California hotel room and refused to let her leave. The report cited police interviews with the alleged victim, a nurse who treated her, a hotel staffer, another woman at the event and Hegseth. Hegseth’s lawyer, Timothy Palatore, said the incident was “fully investigated and police found the allegations to be false.” Hegseth the threat of what he described as a baseless lawsuit, Palatore has said. Wicker played down the allegations against Hegseth, a former Fox News host, saying that “since no charges were brought from the authorities, we only have press reports.” Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., said after his meeting with Hegseth that he “shared with him the fact that I was saddened by the attacks that are coming his way.” Hagerty dismissed the allegations as “a he-said, she-said thing” and called it a “shame” that they were being raised at all. The senator said attention should instead be focused on the Defense Department that Hegseth would head. It’s one of the most complex parts of the federal government with more than 3 million employees, including military service members and civilians. Sexual assault has been a persistent problem in the military, though they are seeing a decline among active-duty service members and the military academies. Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, who will be the No. 2 Republican in the Senate next year, said after his meeting with Hegseth that the nominee is a strong candidate who “pledged that the Pentagon will focus on strength and hard power – not the current administration’s woke political agenda.” Senate Republicans are under pressure to hold hearings once they take office in January and confirm nominees as soon as Trump is inaugurated, despite questions about whether Trump’s choices will be properly screened or if some, like Hegseth, have enough experience for the job. Senate Armed Services Chairman Jack Reed, who will be the top Democrat on the panel next year, said the reports on Hegseth “emphasized the need for a thorough investigation by the FBI on the background of all the nominees.” It takes a simple majority to approve Cabinet nominations, meaning that if Democrats all opposed a nominee, four Republican senators would also have to defect for any Trump choice to be defeated. Trump has made clear he’s willing to put maximum pressure on Senate Republicans to give him the nominees he wants – even suggesting at one point that they allow him to just appoint his nominees with no Senate votes. But senators insist, for now, that they are not giving up their constitutional power to have a say. “The president has the right to make the nominations that he sees fit, but the Senate also has a responsibility for advice and consent,” said Republican Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota. In the case of Gaetz, he said, “I think there was advice offered rather than consent.”Winston's performance in snowy win over Steelers adds new layer to Browns' quarterback conundrum

A former GOP lawmaker has his own theory about the reports of “mystery” drones flying over New Jersey in recent weeks. Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) told his followers on Thursday to compare his explanation of the mystery drones to Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s (R-N.J.) long-shot theory that he floated on Wednesday. This comes as residents across the state have expressed deep concerns with the drone reports despite officials reiterating that there is no known threat. Kinzinger, a strong Trump critic, suggested that the drone sightings may be coming from just one private company that is testing its own drones without breaking any laws. “My drone theory, bookmark this vs the Jeff Van Drew ‘Iran mothership’ theory: Private company testing transportation drones, and does not want to reveal their intellectual property so not fessing up... and not breaking any laws at all," Kinzinger wrote on social media platform X. My drone theory, bookmark this vs the Jeff Van Drew “Iran mothership” theory: Private company testing transportation drones, and does not want to reveal their intellectual property so not fessing up... and not breaking any laws at all Van Drew, in a Wednesday appearance on Fox News, floated the idea that the drones over the Garden State could be flying in from an Iranian “mothership” off the East Coast. “This is a national security crisis we cannot ignore,” Van Drew wrote in his post on X . “Bring them down now.” Deputy Defense Department Press Secretary Sabrina Singh debunked this claim in a press conference on Wednesday, explaining that there is no Iranian “mothership” off the East Coast. “There is not any truth to that. There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States and there’s no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States,” she said. It is still not clear what these mystery drones are, but the FBI is continuing to investigate the sightings. The FBI has asked for the public’s assistance in reporting the drones to its tip line.
