A defiant Lewis Hamilton said he was convinced he “still had it”, adding his pace at the age of 39 was not even “a question in his mind” after qualifying sixth on the grid for Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix. was beaten by Mercedes team-mate George Russell for a 23rd time in 29 qualifying sessions this season ahead of Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix – an astonishing statistic for a driver who, until partnering Russell, had never previously been out-qualified by his team-mate over their time together. But afterwards the -bound driver rowed back on gloomy comments made the previous evening, when, after qualifying seventh for the sprint race in Lusail, he said he was “definitely not fast anymore”. Despite trailing Russell by 0.436sec in qualifying for Sunday’s main race – an even wider margin than it had been on Friday – Hamilton struck a more bullish note, suggesting the major issue was with his car rather than his driving. “I mean I’m slow, about half a second off my team-mate in the same car,” Hamilton said when asked what exactly he had meant on Friday. “It’s been like that all year. [But] I know I’ve still got it. Just the car won’t go faster. But I definitely know I’ve got it, so it’s not a question in my mind.” "Super dangerous by Verstappen" 📻 George Russell was NOT happy with Max Verstappen 😮 — Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) The seven-time world champion – the all-time record holder for pole positions in , with 104 – has been a mass of contradictions in recent weeks. In Brazil earlier this month, Hamilton told his pitwall that he might have raced for the last time for Mercedes, later . At the next race in Las Vegas Hamilton claimed he was “in the best place I’ve been all year mentally”. He showed it in the race, too, surging from 10th on the grid to second behind Russell. It remains to be seen how he fares in Qatar but the gaps between the leading cars are miniscule. Red Bull’s newly crowned four-time world champion took a surprise pole position for Sunday’s race, his first since pole Austria five months ago, just ahead of Russell. It was a stunning result mainly because the Dutch driver had only been able to finish eighth in the sprint race earlier on Saturday when edged towards their first constructors’ title since 1998 with a one-two, Lando Norris pulling over on the final straight to gift Oscar Piastri victory, where the Australian pulled over to help Norris’s drivers’ championship attempt. Verstappen was more surprised than anyone about his pole position for the main race. “Let’s f------ go,” he shouted after crossing the line. “What a turnaround.” “Yabba dabba doo, Max,” replied his team principal, Christian Horner. “That was a first official pole since Austria. That was a mighty lap.” Horner later said the team had “thrown the kitchen sink” at Verstappen’s car, “changing everything we could change”. It worked, Verstappen edging Russell by 0.055sec. However, the Dutchman was called to the stewards for potentially “driving unnecessarily slowly” and impeding Russell in Q3. Russell called the incident “super dangerous”. Norris was third quickest, another two tenths behind Russell. But he will be happy that he and Piastri were both quicker than the Ferraris as McLaren try to wrap up the team’s ninth constructors’ title. Their one-two finish in the sprint race gave McLaren a 30-point lead over Ferrari in the standings. The Woking team need a 45-point lead by the end of this weekend to secure the title, otherwise it will roll on to the final weekend in Abu Dhabi. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will start either side of Hamilton in fifth and seventh place respectively. Meanwhile, Britain’s was crowned champion in the second season of – the all-female support series run by Formula 1 – after finishing second behind Mercedes’s Doriane Pin in the first race of the Qatar weekend. It was Pulling’s eighth win in 11 F1 Academy races this year. There are still three races remaining this season, with another on Sunday, and two more next weekend in Abu Dhabi. The Alpine driver, 21, secured a fully funded seat in GB3 next year with Rodin Motorsport. “It’s been a tougher season than most people think,” said an emotional Pulling afterwards. “I’ve struggled financially in the past, so to get the prize for next year so early makes me so happy and so proud. I can’t thank the people who have supported me enough – Alpine, Rodin, my family, all the sacrifices my dad made.” She added: “It’s such a weight off my shoulders. I think I go into every winter wondering what I’m going to do next year. I’m going to go into [next season] as hungry as I have this year and make the most of this opportunity. I will leave no stone unturned.” 07:33 PM GMT FIA summon Verstappen to the stewards The driver and team representative are required to report to the Stewards at 23.15, in relation to the incident below: - Max Verstappen Alleged breach of Article 33.4 of the FIA Formula One Sproting Regulations - Driving unnecessarily slowly at 21.58. 07:24 PM GMT Horner on the Russell/Verstappen “I think this is on an out lap where they are all warming tyres up. They are all jockeying for position there. So it wasn’t a timed lap.” Anthony Davidson on Sky suggests that Verstappen should escape punishment. The thing in his favour - heavily - is that it was not on a timed lap. 07:22 PM GMT Christian Horner speaks “We pretty much threw the kitchen sink at it, everything we could change we did change. He was able to really nail it. We really struggled yesterday... those corners [1, 2 and 10] really came alive for us. It’s very windy, the conditions are significantly different - it’s so much cooler. We made some changes to Checo’s car... that gave us a little bit of information and were able to add to that and [make changes] going into quali.” 07:16 PM GMT Not that it is a surprise any more... But that is the 23rd time that Lewis Hamilton has qualified behind George Russell in 2024. Sixth is not a disaster by any means and he was ahead of Perez and Sainz. But again distant from his team-mate. 07:10 PM GMT Verstappen reacts to his first pole since the Austrian GP in June “Yeah, crazy. Honestly I didn’t expect that but well done to the team to give me a car that feels a bit more connect. It felt a lot better out there in qualifying for me. We did change a bit on the car but I never thought it would make such a swing in performance. I hope it lasts tomorrow in the race. It felt stable in one lap... it’s good to be on pole, the first one in quite a while.” 07:09 PM GMT Russell on that Verstappen incident “I ended up going through the gravel, all through the floor. I hope it didn’t damage it. Maybe that’s a reason why we didn’t improve but it was a bit of a hairy one two corners before we started the lap.” You can watch that below: "Super dangerous by Verstappen" 📻 George Russell was NOT happy with Max Verstappen 😮 — Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) So it was as they were starting their hot laps. Hmmm. Not as egregious as if it was on a hot lap but the fact that it was at the end of the lap might be a penalty, but I don’t know for sure. 07:05 PM GMT Verstappen has been noted for going slowly in Q3 And he will be investigated after the session for that. I think that will be a threr-place grid penalty. Either way he should be cheered by a turnaround. Pole positions have not been plentiful for him in the last six months. If that was a previous hot lap then Verstappen is in danger and will almost certainly take a penalty. Russell thought it was Verstappen, but was it Perez? 07:01 PM GMT Q3 - Piastri into third What has norris got on his lap? Only third, ahead of Piastri but behind Verstappen and Russell... 07:01 PM GMT Q3 - Not a great first sector from Sainz Leclerc half a tenth down on Russell too. That’s more like it. Sainz 0.307sec off after two sectors so might struggle to improve here. Russell posts the fastest first sector all and Verstappen beats it by half a tenth. Sainz stays fifth... Leclerc stays third... 06:59 PM GMT Q3 - Final runs under way Who has this? I don’t know. Russell has looked strong all session. Pressure on McLaren and in particular Norris, though. 06:58 PM GMT Q3 - Norris is out there again He is a tenth down in the first sector and then backs off. Is he going to go again? He does not have a lap time on the board yet and is putting himself under pressure here. McLaren were 1-2 in the sprint, remember, qualifying first and third. Yet they are currently sixth and ninth... ouch. It’s a recharge/prep lap for Norris before he gets one more go at a hot lap. 06:56 PM GMT Q3 - Verstappen just falls short! Whatever they have done to the Red Bull between the sprint and now has worked wonders. 06:54 PM GMT Q3 - Russell fastest in sector one Norris has not be able to match it, in fact a long way off. Not sure that this will be worth finishing this lap for him. Indeed he comes into the pits. Let’s see what Russell does. Fastest! 0.310sec faser than Leclerc. Piastri goes fourth in the McLaren, Hamilton beats him to go third and ahead of Sainz but 0.436sec off his team-mate. No lap from Verstappen yet. Norris nearly lost the rear end of his car at turn five after runnign wide, hence his abortint the lap. He dipped his right wheels into the gravel strip on exit. I’m glad it’s there. 06:52 PM GMT Q3 - A good couple of sectors for Leclerc He crosses the line with a 1:20.885, still a couple of tenths off Verstappen’s best from Q2. Sainz a couple of tenths off that and Perez eight-tenths off it. Everyone else has done an extra preparation lap. 06:51 PM GMT Q3 - Piastri backs off when it looked like he was starting a hot lap That means Russell goes ahead of him but I think Russell too is doing another prep lap. 06:49 PM GMT Q3 begins! 12 minutes to go. Norris’ gesture – payback for Piastri’s assistance in Sao Paulo where the Australian pulled over to help Norris’ drivers’ championship attempt – was actually forbidden by McLaren, who felt the gap from Piastri to George Russell behind him in third, at just 0.3sec, was too tight to risk. But Norris disregarded the instruction from his team as he felt it was “the right thing to do.” “It was probably a bit sketchy,” he said, smiling. “The team told me not to do it but I felt I could. I’ve been wanting to do it since Brazil.” Norris had already helped Piastri stay in P2 by dropping back during the 19-lap race to give him a DRS slipstream. Russell was third, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz fourth and Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton just losing out in a tense battle with future Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc for fifth. McLaren now lead Ferrari by 30 points in the constructors’ championship heading into Sunday’s race. They need a lead of 45 points by the end of the Qatar weekend to wrap up the constructors’ title this week, otherwise it will roll on to the final race in Abu Dhabi next week. 03:09 PM GMT We will be back for the main race qualifying That begins at 6pm so we will be here from around 5pm so just under two hours. We actually wanted to release the pressure off Lando, but saying that we are happy to finish in this order but Lando managed to find the opportunity to return the favour. “We were nervous on the pit wall because Russell was very close. The drivers when in the car judge a situation more precisely than us on the pit wall. That’s cohesion, that’s unity to be honest I am very proud of Lando and Oscar.” 02:50 PM GMT Updated constructor standings McLaren take another step to the constructors’ title. I think I could have pushed a bit more than what I was doing. We did our job and that’s the main thing. It was probably a bit closer than I thought but I planned to do it since Brazil. The team told me not to do it but I thought I could get away with it and we did. I’m not here to win sprint races, I’m here to win races and the championship, though that’s not gone to plan.” 02:38 PM GMT George Russell reacts after a frustrating third place “It got pretty close in turn one a couple of times. He now trails team-mate George Russell 22-6 in a combination of sprint and main qualifying sessions this season. This is what he had to say after ending up in seventh, five places and nearly four-tenths behind his team-mate. “I’m definitely not fast any more. Same as every other qualifying, not that great, I’m just slow and same every weekend. So yeah, car felt relatively decent. No, no issues, and not really much more to say.” 12:59 PM GMT Good afternoon Welcome to our Saturday coverage for the Qatar Grand Prix, which is the sixth and final of the sprint weekends in 2024. So far we have had one practice session and sprint qualifying, with McLaren’s Lando Norris coming out on top in the latter with a lap that was less than a tenth of a second faster than the lead Mercedes of George Russell, who put in another strong showing. For a while it looked as if the Ferraris would be able to compete for pole, confounding their pre-weekend expectations. Yet Sainz and Leclerc ended around two and three tenths of a second away from Norris’s ultimate pace in fourth and fifth. The second McLaren of Oscar Piastri was a tenth and a half away from his team-mate’s time, which will boost his team’s hopes of winning the constructors’ championship. Norris can no longer take the drivers’ championship (something that had been on the cards for a little while) but it would be McLaren’s first constructors’ title since 1998 and their first F1 title of any kind since 2008. They currently lead Ferrari by 24 points and extending that looks on the cards, though far from certain, this weekend going on current performance. They can secure that title this weekend, but would need to leave the weekend with a 45-point advantage over Ferrari. It is throwing it forward significantly, of course, but if they were to finish the sprint where they start and repeat the same in the main race, then McLaren would leave Lusail with the championship, scoring 54 points to Ferrari’s 31, increasing their advantage by either 22, 23 or 24 points depending on where the fastest lap goes. So it is certainly doable. Red Bull, who are mathematically still in the constructors’ title fight had another off session, with Max Verstappen in sixth and Sergio Perez way down in 16th. You really struggle to see how the Mexican will be able to line up with Red Bull at the start of next year given his performances have shown zero uptick. Anyway, the sprint race itself starts at 2pm with qualifying for the main race at 6pm GMT. We will be here for all of the build-up, live updates and reaction from both.

Biden will decide on US Steel acquisition after influential panel fails to reach consensus WASHINGTON (AP) — A powerful government panel has failed to reach consensus on the possible national security risks of a nearly $15 billion proposed deal for Nippon Steel of Japan to purchase U.S. Steel. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States on Monday sent its long-awaited report to President Joe Biden, a longtime opponent of the deal. Some federal agencies represented on the panel were skeptical that allowing a Japanese company to buy an American-owned steelmaker would create national security risks. That's according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. Both Biden and President-elect Donald Trump opposed the merger and vowed to block it. Nippon Steel says it is confident the deal will go ahead. Nissan and Honda to attempt a merger that would create the world's No. 3 automaker TOKYO (AP) — Japanese automakers Nissan and Honda have announced plans to work toward a merger that would catapult them to a top position in an industry in the midst of tectonic shifts as it transitions away from its reliance on fossil fuels. The two companies said they signed an agreement on integrating their businesses on Monday. Smaller Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors agreed to join the talks. News of a possible merger surfaced earlier this month. Japanese automakers face a strong challenge from their Chinese rivals and Tesla as they make inroads into markets at home and abroad. What a merger between Nissan and Honda means for the automakers and the industry BANGKOK (AP) — Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan will attempt to merge and create the world’s third-largest automaker by sales as the industry undergoes dramatic changes in its transition away from fossil fuels. The two companies said they had signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday and that smaller Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors also had agreed to join the talks on integrating their businesses. Honda will initially lead the new management, retaining the principles and brands of each company. (AP) — Spencer Knight made 20 saves, Mackie Samoskevich scored with less than a second left in the second period, and the Florida Panthers got four goals in the third to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 6-0 on Saturday and complete a two-day sweep. Aleksander Barkov, Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad, Evan Rodrigues and Adam Boqvist also scored for Florida, which won 6-3 at Carolina on Friday. The Panthers have won three straight — that streak following a stretch of six losses in seven games for the Stanley Cup champions. It was Knight's fourth career shutout, his first since Nov. 9, 2022 — also at home against Carolina. Spencer Martin made 23 saves on 28 shots for the Hurricanes, who have dropped four of their last six games (2-3-1). It was Martin's fourth consecutive start for Carolina. Hurricanes: This was the first time all season that the Hurricanes failed to get a point in the game immediately following a loss. Carolina was 4-0-1 after a defeat entering Saturday. Panthers: A big day for Samoskevich — his alma mater Michigan beat Ohio State in football on Saturday, that game ending just before the Florida-Carolina game started. The Panthers are 5-0-0 when he scores this season. Sam Reinhart had each of the four most recent Florida goals at 19:59, before Samoskevich got his Saturday. The Panthers scored two goals 11 seconds apart in the third to make it 5-0, and Yaniv Perets replaced Martin in the Hurricanes' net with 8:12 remaining. It was the second NHL appearance for Perets, who came on once in relief for Carolina last season. Ekblad's goal was his first in a span of 1,045 regular-season shifts since Feb. 20. Carolina starts a two-game homestand Tuesday against Seattle. Florida goes to Pittsburgh to start a two-game trip on Tuesday. AP NHL: https://www.apnews.com/hub/NHL
Syrian government troops are battling insurgents inside Aleppo, the country's second-largest city, for the first time since 2016, according to state media — the most significant challenge in years to President Bashar al-Assad's rule over the war-torn country. It came after rebel fighters led by militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham broke through government defence lines in Aleppo on Friday , entering the city's western neighbourhoods with little resistance following a shock offensive launched earlier in the week from the countryside in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces. The insurgents took control of dozens of villages and towns along the way, including a strategic town south of Aleppo, and on Saturday claimed to control the entirety of Idlib province after capturing the city of Maraat Al-Numan, south of Idlib city. In Aleppo, Russian warplanes allied with the Syrian government are targeting rebel supply lines on the city's edge, with independent war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights saying about 20 fighters had been killed in air strikes on rebel reinforcements. Thousands of civilians are now fleeing the city by car from the main Khanasir Athriya intersection, according to local residents, mostly heading to Latakia and Salamiya — government strongholds to the west and south. Schools and government offices in Aleppo were closed on Saturday as most people stayed indoors to avoid the fighting, according to Sham FM radio, a pro-government station. Bakeries, however, remained open. Insurgents use social media to show off territorial gains In a social media post, a number of insurgents were pictured outside the Aleppo citadel, a medieval palace in the old city centre which is one of the largest in the world. The rebels also posted mobile phone videos of themselves speaking to residents in their homes, seeking to reassure them they will cause no harm. State media, however, referring to the fighters as terrorists, said a number of them had been chased and arrested by government troops after posing for pictures near city landmarks. On a state TV morning show, commentators on Saturday said army reinforcements and Russia's assistance will eventually repel the insurgents, blaming Türkiye for supporting their push into the Aleppo and Idlib provinces. Russia's state news agency Tass also quoted Oleg Ignasyuk, a Russian defence ministry official coordinating in Syria, as saying Russian planes had targeted and killed 200 militants taking part in the offensive on Friday. It provided no further details. Rebel attack follows weeks of simmering tension Aleppo has not been attacked by opposition forces since they were ousted from eastern neighbourhoods in 2016 following a gruelling military campaign in which Syrian government forces were backed by Russia, Iran and its allied groups. The battle for Aleppo was a turning point in the country's long-running civil war, which began in 2011 following protests against Bashar al-Assad's rule. The latest rebel attack on Aleppo followed weeks of simmering low-level violence, including government attacks on opposition-held areas. Türkiye, which has backed Syrian opposition groups, failed in its diplomatic efforts to prevent the Syrian government attacks, which were seen as a violation of a 2019 agreement sponsored by Russia, Turkey and Iran to freeze the line of the conflict. The rebel offensive came as Iran-linked groups backing the Assad regime, primarily Lebanon's Hezbollah, have been preoccupied with their own battles at home. A ceasefire in Hezbollah's two-month war with Israel took effect on Wednesday , the day the Syrian opposition factions announced their offensive. Israel has also escalated its attacks against Hezbollah and Iran-linked targets in Syria over the past 70 days. It was reported that 6,473 people were killed in road accidents, 4,880 of them motorcyclists. From 2010 to 2019, on average, 59% of those who died in road accidents were on motorcycles. Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director-general Assoc Prof Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak Siti Zaharah said the number of fatalities from road accidents had not dropped, with an average of 6,300 deaths per year from 2010 to 2023. “We are recording over 6,000 deaths from road accidents annually, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, which recorded 4,297 and 4,539 road fatalities respectively. “This drop was due to fewer vehicles on the road when the movement control order was implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said. In Klang Valley, which encompasses Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, 1,230 road fatalities were recorded last year. Selangor had 1,037 road fatalities with Kajang topping the chart at 123 deaths, followed by Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya, each with 91. Kuala Lumpur recorded 186 road fatalities while Putrajaya had seven. Motorcyclists’ risky behaviours making illegal U-turns. — Photos: MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI, IZZRAFIQ ALIAS, FAIHAN GHANI and KK SHAM/The Star “This data shows that urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Kajang tend to have higher fatalities, likely due to higher traffic volume and congestion. “In contrast, rural and less densely populated districts like Sabak Bernam recorded fewer fatalities. “Districts with higher traffic density also contribute to these numbers, highlighting the need for improved traffic management and road safety in these areas,” said Siti Zaharah. Miros also found that 50% of road fatalities occurred on federal roads, while 19% were on local streets or municipal roads and 16% on state roads. “Police statistics show that between 2019 and 2023, 15% to 22% of fatal motorcycle crashes occurred on expressways. “Motorcycles have a significantly higher incidence of single-vehicle crashes compared to other vehicle types, accounting for 68% of such incidents.” Miros’ studies also show that loss of control was the primary cause of fatal motorcycle crashes in Malaysia. Siti Zaharah said this was often a result of high speed, sharp turns or sudden manoeuvres. Other contributing factors, she said, included rear-end collisions often due to tailgating or sudden stops, besides poor visibility caused by inadequate lighting and slippery road conditions. “Reckless riding at high speeds is a significant factor. “Although multiple-vehicle crashes (MVC) are less common than single-vehicle crashes, MVCs involving motorcycles have a higher fatality rate,” she added. Utilisation of exclusive motorcycle lanes may be low due to barriers. Crash trends, rider behaviour Siti Zaharah said one of the more common scenarios in motorcycle crashes on highways involved collisions with stationary vehicles. “A significant number of motorcycle crashes occur when riders collide with vehicles in the emergency lane. “These vehicles can include lorries and cars that have stopped due to mechanical issues or other reasons. “The risk is particularly high at night or under low visibility conditions when motorcyclists may not see the vehicles in time.” Miros also found many motorcycle crashes occurring during peak commuting hours when riders are travelling to and from work. “These crashes often result from increased traffic density, time pressures and rider fatigue,” she said. “Vehicles like cars, buses and lorries can create hazardous conditions for motorcyclists, who are more physically vulnerable.” Through various studies conducted over the years, she said Miros identified several types of reckless behaviour that jeopardised motorcyclists’ safety. “Dangerous behaviours like stunt riding, commonly known as rempit, and illegal racing are also prevalent causes of crashes. Utilisation of exclusive motorcycle lanes may be low due to insufficient lighting in tunnels. “These activities involve high speeds and dangerous manoeuvres, leaving motorcyclists vulnerable to losing control or colliding with other vehicles or objects on the highway. “Other reckless riding behaviours include speeding, which reduces reaction time and increases crash severity, lane splitting and filtering. “Riding without protective gear, ignoring traffic signals and signs, improper overtaking and distractions such as using mobile phones – especially among p-hailing riders – also contribute to the risks faced by motorcyclists.” Motorcycle lane ratings There are three types of motorcycle lanes: exclusive, non-exclusive and paved road shoulders. An exclusive motorcycle lane is built separately from the traffic carriageway and has a physical barrier, while a non-exclusive motorcycle lane is part of the traffic carriageway and is separated by a non-physical barrier. Paved shoulders are part of the traffic carriageway marked by a normal-edge line, where motorcyclists can distance themselves from other vehicles. Within Malaysia, there are 351.1km of exclusive motorcycle lanes and 204.9km of non-exclusive motorcycle lanes. “Our earlier studies have shown a 39% reduction in crashes with the implementation of exclusive motorcycle lanes,” said Siti Zaharah. “However, utilisation rates remain low due to factors such as water ponding, poor pavement conditions, roadside hazards and even criminal threats. “Other reasons include longer travel distances on the motorcycle lanes, violations by other vehicles using the lanes and inconsistent lane layouts. Many riders disregard Kesas Highway rules that prohibit motorcyclists on the main carriageway from 6am to 11pm. “Improvements and maintenance, however, such as those on Federal Route 2, have increased usage rates from 81% in 2016 to 92% in 2023.” Motorcyclists are legally required to use motorcycle lanes when available, as mandated by Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Siti Zaharah said Miros was assessing the safety of exclusive motorcycle lanes and providing them with star ratings. “The rating system will help identify locations with the best conditions for motorcyclists and guide maintenance priorities by highlighting lower-rated lanes that may require urgent upgrades or repairs. “The initiative aims to enhance the overall infrastructure for motorcyclists, ensuring safer travel routes and encouraging the use of designated lanes. “Highly rated locations can serve as benchmarks when designing new exclusive motorcycle lanes, promoting consistent safety standards across the network,” she said. Improving bike handling To promote the safety of motorcyclists, several programmes have been introduced to equip them with road training and skills. “Since it was found that most road crashes involved motorcyclists commuting to work, Miros has a Commuting Safety Support Programme (CSSP) that is a direct intervention programme. “It was launched in 2017 in cooperation with the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to train motorcycle riders towards enhancing travel safety knowledge, awareness and basic skills,” Siti Zaharah said. Miros also offers the P-hailing Safe Riding Training that covers safe and defensive riding techniques. Under the Miros Ori-Rider programme, motorcyclists are also provided specialised training for safe riding and motorcycle maintenance. The Miros Motorcycle Collision Alert System (MCAS), a pilot project launched last year with 35 units installed in 18 motorcycle models, showed an 89% drop in crashes and over 1,000 avoided collisions. It gives real-time alerts to enhance riders’ situational awareness, enabling them to gauge safe distances and brake safely. The Anti-lock Braking System will also be made mandatory for all new motorcycles 150cc and above, beginning Jan 1 next year, which will enhance braking safety and reduce crash risks.

A rich picture has emerged of the three men who left a message hidden inside the walls of a Scottish lighthouse 132 years ago, thanks to the work of genealogists. Earlier this month BBC Scotland News revealed a bottle containing the note had been Written with quill and ink and dated 4 September 1892, it revealed the names of the three workers who installed a new type of light in the 100ft (30m) tower. Now experts from genealogy firm Findmypast have pored over censuses and newspaper archives to uncover the story of the workers who left the intriguing time capsule. Queen Victoria was on the throne and Gladstone was leading a Liberal government but the genealogists' research reveals details of the ordinary working men who travelled from Edinburgh to leave their mark on the remote lighthouse. The first name on the concealed letter was that of John Westwood, a 28-year-old millwright - a tradesman who works with machinery - from Edinburgh. He had travelled from the capital to the lighthouse at the most northerly point of the Rhins of Galloway to carry out the project for James Milne & Son. As a millwright, he was following in the footsteps of his father, David Westwood. He ran his own millwright business, with John's eldest two brothers, David, a millwright, and Alexander, a mechanical draughtsman. Born in St Andrews, Fife, in 1864, John was the youngest of eight siblings. His two eldest sisters, Mary and Margaret, worked as domestic servants when John and his other three siblings were still at school. When John reached 16 he too became a millwright. By 1891, John had moved to Edinburgh and was living as a lodger with a widowed pianoforte maker, Richard Honeyman, 70, and his daughter, Helen, 45. A year later he was sent on the Corsewall Lighthouse project. He married Margaret Gow, the 26-year-old daughter of a contractor from Blairgowrie, in 1896. They went on to have three children - John, Jane and Neil. And John Sr lived a long life. He died aged 93 in March 1958 at Edinburgh City Hospital. James Brodie was 48 when the trio of workers concealed the bottle. He was a James Milne & Sons engineer who had also travelled from Edinburgh. Born in Renfrewshire in 1844, he was the eldest of James and Margaret's five children. Census records show that he was an apprentice engineer when he was 17, and he lived with his parents on George Street in Greenock. His father was a shawl weaver and his mother was a cotton winder. In 1868 he married Annie F Scott in Paisley. By the time he wrote the secret note they had seven children under the age of 14 and were living on Tannahill Place, Paisley. David Scott was 32 when he left the note in the lighthouse and worked as a labourer for James Milne & Sons. He was born in 1860, the son of Jane and William Scott, a grain loftman in Edinburgh. When he wrote the lighthouse note he was still living with his housekeeper mother, his sister Jane Mackay, a millworker, and her two sons David and William at 40 Fox Street in Edinburgh. Ten years later, 41-year-old David was still single and boarding with the Munro family (James, Jane and their infant son John) at 41 Leith Walk, Edinburgh. He had become more specialised in his trade and was now working as a lead and metal worker. All three men worked for James Milne & Son, a business that was founded "prior to 1750" as brassfounders. In 1821 they fitted the author Sir Walter Scott's Melrose home, Abbotsford, with an oil-gas plant and by 1837 they were making gas meters. Around 1885, they moved from their premises in Edinburgh's High Street to the larger Milton House Works, in Abbeyhill. Their Glasgow branch opened two years later, where they displayed gasoliers, pumps, light-fittings and the Wenham Patent Gas Lamp. By the late 1890s, they were making "lamps for lighthouses" and specialised in aluminium. The bottle containing the note was found by Ross Russell, a Northern Lighthouse Board mechanical engineer, during an inspection. He spotted it after removing panels in a cupboard but it was well out of arm's reach. The team retrieved it using a contraption made from a rope and a broom handle. He said he was blown away to find out about the men who had written the note. "I've touched the note and the bottle but never in my wildest dreams would I have thought we would find out all this about their lives," he said. "It's just incredible." Jen Baldwin, a research specialist at Findmypast, said: "These rare mementoes offer such a wonderful window into the past. "From just a name, date and location, we've been able to trace some of their stories back in time and build up a rich picture of their lives and the world around them. "This one lighthouse project might appear at first glance simple and remote, but these workers were part of a revolution in technology and engineering during the late 1800s and were enabling ships to safely navigate through a busy sea passage - part of a wider network of trade and travel routes across a global empire." Historian Eric Melvin said: "The Carsewell Lighthouse story of the hidden message in a bottle is absolutely fascinating. "To discover an original contemporary source is always exciting but to find one deliberately hidden away is intriguing. "Did the three engineers plan this together? What motivated them? Did they tell anyone about the hidden bottle and did they leave any clues? "Great credit is due to those who have researched their family stories."Panthers TE Ja'Tavion Sanders carted off field for neck injury
Carolina Panthers tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken to a hospital for a neck injury after landing on his head while making a catch late in the first half of Sunday's 30-27 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. As Sanders was brought down near the sideline after a 10-yard reception, he was flipped upside down and landed directly on the top of his helmet as he went out of bounds on the tackle by cornerback Trent McDuffie. After receiving attention from the team's medical staff, Sanders was strapped to a backboard and taken off the field on a cart with 40 seconds remaining in the half. He was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for observation and later released Sunday afternoon, according to the team. On the CBS broadcast following halftime, Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Sanders had movement in all his extremities, while extreme precaution was taken because of back tightness. CBS reported he was being examined for a concussion before later amending that to a neck injury. The 21-year-old rookie out of Texas had a team-leading three receptions for the Panthers at the half for 49 yards. In 11 games this season, Sanders has 29 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown. Sanders was a fourth-round selection in the NFL draft in April. --Field Level MediaPanthers TE Ja'Tavion Sanders carted off field for neck injury
New coach Chris Holtmann has been tasked with rebuilding DePaul to the point where it can return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. Northern Illinois coach Rashon Burno knows what it takes to steer DePaul to the NCAAs because he was the starting point guard on the 2000 team that made the tournament -- the Blue Demons' only other NCAA appearance since 1992. Perhaps they can compare notes Saturday afternoon when Burno leads the Huskies (2-3) back to his alma mater as DePaul (5-0) hosts its sixth straight home game in Chicago. Last season, Burno's NIU squad helped accelerate DePaul's need for a new coach -- as the Huskies waltzed into Wintrust Arena and owned Tony Stubblefield's Blue Demons by an 89-79 score on Nov. 25. The Huskies built a 24-point second-half lead before coasting to the finish line. Can history repeat for NIU? There's just one problem with using last year's game as a potential barometer for Saturday's rematch: Almost no players on this year's teams were part of last year's squads. At DePaul, only assistant coach Paris Parham remains as Holtmann had the green light to bring in an all-new roster. UIC graduate transfer Isaiah Rivera (16.0 ppg, .485 3-point rate) and Coastal Carolina transfer Jacob Meyer (15.4 ppg, .406 on 3s) lead a balanced attack that focuses on getting half its shots from beyond the arc. At NIU, Burno retained only two players who competed against DePaul last year -- Ethan Butler and Oluwasegun Durosinmi -- and they combined for three points in 26 minutes in that game. The Huskies' main players used the transfer portal to join such programs as Kansas, Wisconsin, Penn State, Colorado State, James Madison, Georgia State and Niagara. With every starting job open, Butler has jumped into the lineup and produced 11.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. Transfers Quentin Jones (Cal Poly) and James Dent (Western Illinois) pace the Huskies with 14.4 and 14.0 points per game. NIU is on a two-game losing streak, most recently a 75-48 home defeat at the hands of Elon on Wednesday. Holtmann hopes to have Arkansas transfer Layden Blocker for Saturday's game. Blocker missed Tuesday's 78-69 win over Eastern Illinois with a quad injury. With the combo guard unavailable, point guard Conor Enright handed out a career-high 11 assists in a season-high 38 minutes. "We need (Blocker)," Holtmann said. "I don't want to play Conor 38 minutes." --Field Level MediaSUNRISE, Fla. We also visited the homes of his relatives and friends in these areas and sought their cooperation to trace him in case he contacted them directly or indirectly because of his involvement in a serious crime." Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Nikhil Pingale said three police teams were using a variety of sources, including human intelligence, to trace the suspect, but the efforts had not yielded results so far. The other sources include seeking help from the Pune rural, Latur and Solapur police units in Maharashtra to collect intelligence information about his whereabouts. "We have requested the Uttar Pradesh police to maintain vigilance at the residence of the main accused Shaikh, arrested from there, because we suspect that he might contact his family for seeking shelter or financial assistance," he added. The rape survivor, from a city in Gujarat, and her friend (22), a chartered accountancy (CA) student from north Maharashtra, had gone to Bopdev Ghat around 11pm on October 3. An hour later, three men approached them near the "Table Point" on the ghat and assaulted the CA student before raping the young woman. The police made their first arrest in the case on October 11 in the form of Kanaujia, a labourer from Kadnagar in Undri, and followed it up with the arrest of ragpicker Shaikh from Prayagraj in a coordinated action with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force. The arrested duo are under judicial custody in the Yerawada central prison.
