ESCONDIDO, CA -- The stars of "Mufasa: The Lion King": Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Tiffany Boone opened up to On The Red Carpet about playing the three lead lions in the upcoming Disney adventure. Pierre voices the title character, Mufasa, the father of Simba who was first introduced in the original 'Lion King' movie in 1994. Harrison Jr. plays his adoptive brother Taka who fans know better as the villain, Scar. And Boone plays Sarabi, a female lion who attracts the attention of the two males, putting their brotherly bond to the test. The new film opening in theaters December 20, isn't the first time Pierre and Harrison Jr. have worked together. The pair also portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X in Nat Geo's "Genius: MLK/X." Harrison Jr. jokingly calls Pierre his "big brother" because they're "months apart." But! Pierre quickly clarified their birthdays are only a month apart. Boone revealed to On The Red Carpet what if feels like to see her character on screen as an animal singing, "Strange. Yes, when I finally saw it or even when we would see some of the sketches come to life it was like 'this is really, really strange' especially how intense the technology is. It's so life-like." Speaking of "intense," Pierre opened up about starring in a highly anticipated film hitting theaters before the holidays, "I'm very nervous but you know I'm really hopeful that people will connect with this and it resonates with people whether they choose to see it on their own or with their loved ones, I just hope people leave feeling inspired and feeling joyous!" Boone shared similar sentiments about voicing Sarabi. "It's an amazing opportunity to be in this cast of actors, to be working with (Lin-Manuel Miranda), to be working with (director) Barry (Jenkins). It's one of those moments where you have to pinch yourself and be like, 'oh, ok you are in this amazing opportunity, what are you gonna do with it and hopefully be present in it." Pierre says he's pinching himself too. "I still can't quite believe that this is a reality," He said. The Indian arm of UK-headquartered pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has laid off more than 125 employees from its biopharmaceutical business unit, according to people aware of the development. AstraZeneca India confirmed that the headcount has changed but did not say how many jobs have been cut. "In the biopharmaceutical business unit, we are furthering efforts to deliver the next generation of therapeutics in our pipeline, focusing on specialists, science and innovation, while improving access of our existing portfolio in specialist disease areas," a company spokesperson said in an email response to ET's query. The company statement said, "This has led to strategic restructuring of our biopharmaceutical team impacting certain roles. We are fully cognizant of the impact this has caused, and our first responsibility remains towards our employees and meeting the needs of patients." The unit sold some of the old, legacy brands such as anti-cholesterol brand Crestor, clot buster Brilinta and Forxiga, one of the best prescribed brands for the treatment of diabetes. Along with a few other brands, the annual sales from the biopharma unit were around ₹400 crore, according to an industry source. However, the loss of patent exclusivity of these brands in India resulted in a deluge of generic drugs in the market. "When dapagliflozin (Forxiga) lost its patent rights four years ago, at least 250 generic substitutes came in. It gets tough for MNCs to compete on pricing," the source said. However, AstraZeneca's ambitions for India remain. A significant traction is seen in its new wave of patented drugs like Tagrisso for lung cancer, Koselugo for a rare genetic disorder, Breztri (drug to treat COPD) and Enhertu used in the treatment of breast and gastric cancer. In that direction, AstraZeneca said in the statement, "Our aspiration to be pioneers in science has increased our focus on specialist disease areas where we can make the most meaningful difference in helping people with cancer, other chronic and rare diseases." Over the last few years, AstraZeneca has seen a series of job cuts in its core India operations, while it has continued to invest and ramped up capacity at its global capability centres at Bengaluru and Chennai to support research and innovation efforts. Giants: At Philadelphia to face Saquon Barkley and the Eagles.Extended price rises by fuel retailers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane must be urgently investigated, the National Roads and Motorists’ Association has declared, after its new finding that the three biggest petrol markets are more expensive than the smaller cities of Darwin, Perth and Adelaide. The NRMA is demanding the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission review the fuel-price cycles that trap motorists in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, pointing to their analysis that shows an average family spends at least $250 a year more on fuel in those cities compared with Perth. Motorists in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are being stung as a result of fuel-price cycles. Credit: afr That’s because Perth has a one-week price cycle among its fuel retailers, while service stations in the nation’s biggest capital cities consistently cycle their prices over a six-week period, which is too long for motorists to wait out high price periods before they fill their tanks. “There is no justifiable reason for our biggest cities to be among the most expensive – it just doesn’t pass the pub test,” said NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury. Prices take about two weeks to shift from the lowest point to the peak, but they remain elevated for weeks – taking about a month to cycle back to the budget end of the scale. In Perth, the same cycle only takes seven days. NRMA analysis found the price of unleaded petrol in Sydney was 9.7 cents more per litre compared with Perth in 2024, and 8.9 cents more in Melbourne. In Brisbane, a litre costs 13.6 cents more this year than in Perth, while the most expensive fuel was in the nation’s capital, Canberra, at 14.9 cents more than Perth. For an average family that fills one 55-litre tank with unleaded petrol once a week, the annual fuel bill is $277 more in Sydney compared with Perth, and $255 more in Melbourne. Khoury said petrol is the single largest weekly expense for most households, and NRMA is eyeing the upcoming federal election, due by May, to focus get political leaders to focus on addressing the issue. “It’s growing worse over time, and our expectation is there will be a heightened awareness of it in 2025 because it’s an election year,” Khoury said. “Cost of living is going to play one of the biggest parts in determining the outcome of the election, and we know that fuel has been a major factor which has put upward pressure on inflation. “The status quo isn’t working for Australians any more and the only avenue to do something about it is through the ACCC.” Australia’s major markets have only recently flipped from being among the nation’s cheapest to the most expensive. “Sydney in 2019 was the second-cheapest city in Australia, in 2020 it was the third-cheapest city in Australia. In 2018, Melbourne was the third-cheapest city in Australia. So they’ve gone from being in the top three-cheapest to being in the top three most-expensive,” Khoury said. A spokesperson for the ACCC said the NRMA’s call for an investigation was a matter for the government to consider. A spokesperson for Treasurer Jim Chalmers, whose portfolio includes the ACCC, said it monitored petrol prices to ensure fair pricing. “We don’t want to see service stations take Australian motorists for mugs,” the spokesperson said. “Petrol prices decreased in the last quarter in the five major Australian cities, taking pressure off consumers who are doing it tough.” Queensland Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg welcomed the prospect of an ACCC inquiry, which he acknowledged must be triggered by the federal government. “The appropriate mechanism to consider those measures and the effects of those measures would be an ACCC inquiry, noting that the federal government is responsible for price regulation,” Mickelberg said on Monday. The ACCC monitors fuel prices and its latest quarterly report found that “price cycles only occur at the retail level and are not driven by movements in wholesale prices or underlying costs”. “While petrol price cycles can be frustrating for motorists, and the longer cycles in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane make it more difficult for motorists to time their purchases in these cities, there are opportunities to save throughout the cycle. Login or signup to continue reading At the start of December, Justin Tatum stated that his Illawarra Hawks could win their four upcoming challenging games against the Perth Wildcats, Melbourne United, Perth and Sydney Kings. On Friday night, the Hawks made it two from two after a breakthrough win over United in Melbourne. The Hawks' 106-93 win at John Cain Arena improved their win/loss record to a league-leading 10-5. As importantly, the performance showed Tatum's team was the real deal and a genuine championship contender. The Hawks' coach was also happy to pick up just his second win over United in nine outings in Melbourne. But Tatum said the round 12 win wasn't a top-tier win as United were missing key players Chris Goulding and Rob Lee. He was, however, happy to see his team play well for four quarters and fight through adversity. "I'm happy how they trusted each other out there. I'm happy how they encouraged each other not to get caught up in anything and just worry about the game. So I was proud of the growth of my group," Tatum said. 'It's a tough place to play. We have not had so much success since I've been the head coach here, but this is not playoffs; this is regular season for us to get better, so I don't really put it as a top-tier win; it's just something to help us grow as a group." Hawks' co-captain Sam Froling was fantastic for Tatum's team, finishing with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. In his previous six outings against United, Froling averaged 18 points on 71.9 per cent shooting. Asked why he always did well against United, Froling praised his long-time partner in crime, Tyler Harvey, who also had a big game, contributing 31 points, seven rebounds and four assists, for freeing him up to shine. "It's the beauty of having Tyler on this team. So much focus goes to him, Trey, now, we've got shooters everywhere. They back their bigs in a one-on-one matchup, and I back myself in that matchup, and it tends to work," he said. "The first three minutes, we didn't get some great shots, and I told the guys, to Tyler, get me one, and he straight in. "I think it's a good outlet when we're not getting great shots; you can roll it in. I think I'm smart enough to make the right play and get us a good shot. And many of those shots in the third quarter were me going up low; there was no help. "That's why we have so many good shooters." Froling added the Hawks took a lot of confidence out of beating United convincingly and leapfrogging them to the top of the table. "We come into this game confident with a good game plan. We backed ourselves, and everyone was talking about the record, and we pushed that to the side. This is another game, a team we can beat, and we went out there and executed the game plan and got that." Tatum added that the Hawks weren't overly concerned with recognition and were focused on gaining as many wins as possible. "I think winning speaks for everything, speaks volumes. I think the more games we can win, the more respect we'll get. "We haven't been at the top of the echelon in the league for a while. And so what we're doing is probably surprising the league, but every day, we come to practice and work, and we're not surprising ourselves; we're trying to get to the point where we see our potential together. "We are just going to keep winning." The Hawks' next chance to win is against the Perth Wildcats in Wollongong on Sunday, December 22. Wollongong born and bred.
