News Don't miss out on the headlines from News. Followed categories will be added to My News. It’s been a rough couple of years for the Territory. In fact, the past decade has been a bit of a battle. An economy stuck in neutral, spiralling public debt, rising crime and social dysfunction and a series of underwhelming governments have combined to leave the Territory on struggle street. There’s perhaps no better indicator of our plight than Darwin house prices. At its peak in May 2014, Darwin’s median house price was a tick over $645,000. More than 10 years on – and even with the benefit of an artificial spike driven by a temporarily shifting population and record low interests rates during Covid - that median house price has gone backwards by about 10 per cent. Today it sits at just over $580,000. For those who bought at or around the peak, it means they’ve spent a decade with little, no, or even negative equity in their most significant asset. Aerial view of Darwin's Waterfront Precinct. That factor alone can have a devastating impact on the local economy, drying up discretionary spending and in the process making it more difficult for businesses to turn a decent profit. Our net interstate migration, which has reached record lows in the past two years, would perhaps be worse if not for the fact so many people would be forced to sell their home at a loss if they wanted to up stumps and leave. But as we head into 2025, could there finally be cause for some optimism? Could this be the year we finally turn the corner? Real estate agents are not a traditionally reliable source of information when assessing the future prospects of a housing market, but many are quietly talking about a recent uptick that has the potential to continue. It’s being driven by many things, among them the fact that our housing market has fallen so far it now represents outstanding value to studious investors. You can buy an established home in Darwin for a price significantly less than what it costs to build a new one, and that’s before you add the cost of the land. But there are also signs the economy is turning. Gas from the Barossa field will be exported to Darwin LNG via a new export pipeline tied into the existing Bayu-Darwin Pipeline. Supplied Next year will see Santos process the first gas from its Barossa field at the Darwin LNG plant. After fighting off a series of legal challenges, Barossa will be full steam ahead in 2025, delivering 350 permanent jobs in the Top End for the next 20 years, with an estimated $2.5 billion worth of wages and contracts expected to flow for Territorians. Empire Energy and Tamboran Resources are expecting to produce their first gas from the Beetaloo Basin by the end of 2025. This will help keep out lights on in the short-term and has the potential to create thousands of jobs and provide much-needed royalties for the NT Government. Interestingly, Santos has had a recent change of heart on its position in relation to the Beetaloo. Tamboran Resources Shenandoah South Pilot Project site amid the vast Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory. Speaking at an Energy Club lunch in Darwin in February, Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher said the uncertain regulatory framework in Australia and the company’s bruising legal battles when trying to develop Barossa meant it was unlikely to pursue development in the Beetaloo any time soon. “Until we tighten up the (regulations) until approval means approval, it’s very difficult to see (investment),” he said. “Would I be throwing a lot of capital into the Beetaloo right now? Not on your Nellie because I don’t know when I’m ever going to get a return on it.” But a changing political landscape and a growing acceptance that there is no renewable energy future without gas playing a significant role has Santos singing from a different song sheet. “We’re looking to actually do some further appraisal in 2026 and we’re really excited about just how supportive the new Northern Territory government is to actually exploiting these opportunities,” Santos executive vice president Brett Darley said following the company’s Darwin board meeting earlier this month. “This is a fantastic resource for us.” Diggers on parade at Robertson Barracks. Picture GLENN CAMPBELL Darwin will also benefit from a shift in Defence resources. The Australian Army’s 7RAR has just returned to Darwin to rejoin 5RAR after a decade in Adelaide. Significant upgrades continue at Robertson Barracks and Tindal Air Base, and next year Japanese troops will join US Marines for training exercises in the Top End. All of this could mean the Territory’s economic prospects will finally show some improvement in 2025. This might be an overly optimistic view. But if your glass isn’t half full at the start of the year, when will it be? Here’s to better days ahead. Why Composite Fillings Are the Preferred Choice for a Natural-Looking Smile 11-26-2024 12:38 AM CET | Associations & Organizations Press release from: ABNewswire When it comes to treating cavities, patients today have more choices than ever to restore their teeth in a way that looks natural and beautiful. Tryon Family Dentistry, a leading provider of comprehensive dental care with locations in Raleigh and Zebulon, is proud to offer composite fillings, the preferred choice for patients seeking a natural-looking, durable solution. Composite fillings not only blend seamlessly with natural teeth but also offer a range of benefits that make them an excellent alternative to traditional silver amalgam fillings. Aesthetic Advantages of Composite Fillings Unlike traditional metal amalgam fillings, composite fillings are made from a blend of resin and finely ground glass particles. This combination results in a tooth-colored filling material that can be perfectly matched to each patient's natural tooth color, creating a seamless and discreet restoration. For patients concerned with maintaining a uniform appearance, composite fillings offer the aesthetic advantage of a natural look, making them virtually undetectable in the mouth. Blending and Bonding for a Stronger Smile Composite fillings [ https://tryonfamilydentistry.com/dental-services/general-dentistry/composite-fillings/ ] not only look natural but also bond directly to the tooth structure, providing a strong and durable seal that protects against further decay. This bonding process allows for a more conservative approach, as it requires less removal of healthy tooth structure compared to amalgam fillings. The result is a restoration that not only preserves the tooth but also strengthens it, contributing to a healthier, longer-lasting smile. Key Syria rebel, Murhaf Abu Qasra becomes defence minister in interim govt DAMASCUS: Syria’s new rulers have appointed Murhaf Abu Qasra, a leading figure in the insurgency which toppled Bashar al-Assad, as defence minister in the interim government, an official source said on Saturday. Abu Qasra, who is also known by the nom de guerre Abu Hassan 600, is a senior figure in the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group which led the campaign that ousted Assad this month. He led numerous military operations during Syria’s revolution, the source said. Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa discussed “the form of the military institution in the new Syria” during a meeting with armed factions on Saturday, state news agency Sana reported. Abu Qasra during the meeting sat next to Sharaa, also known by the nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, photos published by Sana showed. Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir said this week that the defence ministry would be restructured using former rebel factions and officers who defected from Assad’s army. Bashir, who formerly led an HTS-affiliated administration in the northwestern province of Idlib, has said he will lead a three-month transitional government. The new administration has not declared plans for what will happen after that. Earlier on Saturday, the ruling General Command named Asaad Hassan al-Shibani as foreign minister, Sana said. A source in the new administration told Reuters that this step “comes in response to the aspirations of the Syrian people to establish international relations that bring peace and stability”. Shibani, a 37-year-old graduate of Damascus University, previously led the political department of the rebels’ Idlib government, the General Command said. Minorities reassured Sharaa hosted Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt on Sunday in another effort to reassure minorities that they would be protected. Sharaa said no sects would be excluded in Syria in what he described as “a new era far removed from sectarianism”. “We take pride in our culture, our religion and our Islam. Being part of the Islamic environment does not mean the exclusion of other sects. On the contrary, it is our duty to protect them,” he said during the meeting with Jumblatt, in comments broadcast by Lebanese broadcaster Al Jadeed. The press has given Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra the nickname "Paetongphoey" -- a reference to her dependence on prepared scripts at important occasions -- as part of the year-end tradition among Government House reporters to come up with monikers for senior government officials. The nickname "Paetongphoey" is a mash-up between the first two syllables of the prime minister's name, and phoey -- the Thai word for "script". When asked to comment on the name, Ms Paetongtarn insisted it didn't upset her, before adding good-naturedly that "Paetongpad" would have been more accurate, as she reads the scripts off her iPad (as her critics have noted). Government House correspondents also dubbed Ms Paetongtarn's administration as "the dad-backed government", due to her father's -- former prime minister Thaksin -- prominent role in her government. Meanwhile, they also viewed her remarks about her husband's southern origin, brought up when the South was hit by severe floods last month, as quote of the year. In the wake of widespread public criticism for her decision to supervise flood clean-up operations in the North instead of visiting the South when the floods there were at their worst, the premier responded by saying her husband "is a Southerner," so would not let her ignore the area's plight anyway. She said she would have loved to inspect the flooded areas herself, but the widespread nature and timing of the disasters meant she had no option but to delegate tasks to various lawmakers and members of her cabinet. "I feel like I just have to take a step back from anything that makes me feel bad, because hating someone is tiresome," said Ms Paetongtarn at Government House on Monday. When asked about her goals for next year after receiving the feedback from the press, Ms Paetongtarn said she will put her focus on chronic social issues plaguing the country, before pledging to expedite the nation's economic recovery.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden kicked off his final holiday season at the White House on Monday by issuing the traditional reprieve to two turkeys who will bypass the Thanksgiving table to live out their days in southern Minnesota. Biden welcomed 2,500 guests to the South Lawn under sunny skies as he cracked jokes about the fates of “Peach” and “Blossom” and sounded wistful tones about the last weeks of his presidency after a half-century in Washington power circles. “It’s been the honor of my life. I’m forever grateful,” Biden said, taking note of his impending departure on Jan. 20, 2025. That's when power will transfer to Republican President-elect Donald Trump, the man Biden defeated four years ago and was battling again until he was pressured to bow out of the race amid concerns about his age and viability. Biden is 82. Until Inauguration Day, the president and first lady Jill Biden will continue a busy run of festivities that will double as their long goodbye. The White House schedule in December is replete with holiday parties for various constituencies, from West Wing staff to members of Congress and the White House press corps. Biden relished the brief ceremony with the pardoned turkeys, named for the official flower of the president's home state of Delaware. “The peach pie in my state is one of my favorites,” he said during remarks that were occasionally interrupted by Peach gobbling atop the table to Biden's right. “Peach is making a last-minute plea,” Biden said at one point, drawing laughter from an overflow crowd that included Cabinet members, White House staff and their families, and students from 4H programs and Future Farmers of America chapters. Biden introduced Peach as a bird who “lives by the motto, ‘Keep calm and gobble on.’” Blossom, the president said, has a different motto: “No fowl play. Just Minnesota nice.” Peach and Blossom came from the farm of John Zimmerman, near the southern Minnesota city of Northfield. Zimmerman, who has raised about 4 million turkeys, is president of the National Turkey Federation, the group that has gifted U.S. presidents Thanksgiving turkeys since the Truman administration after World War II. President Harry Truman, however, preferred to eat the birds. Official pardon ceremonies did not become an annual White House tradition until the administration of President George H.W. Bush in 1989. With their presidential reprieve, Peach and Blossom will live out their days at Farmamerica, an agriculture interpretative center near Waseca in southern Minnesota. The center's aim is to promote agriculture and educate future farmers and others about agriculture in America. Separately Monday, first lady Jill Biden received the official White House Christmas tree that will be decorated and put on display in the Blue Room. The 18.5 foot (5.64 meters) Fraser fir came from a farm in an area of western North Carolina that recently was devastated by Hurricane Helene . Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm lost thousands of trees in the storm “but this one remained standing and they named it ‘Tremendous’ for the extraordinary hope that it represents,” Jill Biden said at the event. The Bidens were also traveling to New York City on Monday for an evening “Friendsgiving” event at a Coast Guard station on Staten Island. Biden began his valedictory calendar Friday night with a gala for hundreds of his friends, supporters and staff members who gathered in a pavilion erected on the South Lawn, with a view out to the Lincoln Memorial. Cabinet secretaries, Democratic donors and his longest-serving staff members came together to hear from the president and pay tribute, with no evidence that Biden was effectively forced from the Democratic ticket this summer and watched Vice President Kamala Harris suffer defeat on Nov. 5. “I’m so proud that we’ve done all of this with a deep belief in the core values of America,” said Biden, sporting a tuxedo for the black-tie event. Setting aside his criticisms of Trump as a fundamental threat to democracy, Biden added his characteristic national cheerleading: “I fully believe that America is better positioned to lead the world today than at any point in my 50 years of public service.” The first lady toasted her husband with a nod to his 2020 campaign promise to “restore the soul of the nation,” in Trump’s aftermath. With the results on Election Day, however, Biden’s four years now become sandwiched in the middle of an era dominated by Trump's presence on the national stage and in the White House. Even as the first couple avoided the context surrounding the president's coming exit, those political realities were nonetheless apparent, as younger Democrats like Maryland Gov. Wes Moore , Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Biden's Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg not only raised their glasses to the president but held forth with many attendees who could remain in the party's power circles in the 2028 election cycle and beyond. ___ Associated Press writer Steve Karnowski in Minneapolis contributed to this report. The Jets enter the Christmas break with back-to-back wins, while the Maple Leafs dropped their second in a row at Scotiabank Arena without wounded captain Auston Matthews, out with an upper-body injury. Gabriel Vilardi added three assists. Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves. Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey had two assists to reach 30 for the season. John Tavares scored twice for the Maple Leafs, and Joseph Woll stopped 22 shots. Maple Leafs forward William Nylander extended his point streak to seven games with assists on both of Tavares' goals. Toronto: Defender Chris Tanev missed his first game this year with a lower-body ailment after skating in the pre-game warmup. Winnipeg: As impressive as the Jets (25-10-1) have played before the break, they are only one point ahead of the 36-game pace of 23-9-4 set a year ago. After Jets defenseman Neal Pionk had his shot blocked, the puck bounded to Mitch Marner for a breakaway. Pionk hustled back to lift Marner’s stick to foil his shot attempt early in the second period to preserve Winnipeg’s 2-0 lead. The Maple Leafs have gone 7-4-0 with Matthews on the sidelines this season and 42-23-2 in his career. Toronto returns to action after the holiday break on Friday, visiting the Detroit Red Wings. Fantasy tip Philadelphia’s defense is tied for ninth in the NFL with a plus-6 turnover margin. With Hurts possibly sidelined, Philadelphia giving up an uncharacteristic 36 points last week and the chance to clinch the division, the Eagles defense likely will be extra motivated to have a good performance against a Dallas offense that ranks 21st in the league in points. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL The Associated PressColts need help for playoff shot, while Giants seek end to record skid

The S&P 500 fell less than 0.1% after spending the day wavering between small gains and losses. The tiny loss ended the benchmark index’s three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1% and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%. Trading volume was lighter than usual as US markets reopened following the Christmas holiday. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.2%. Meta Platforms fell 0.7%, and Amazon and Netflix each fell 0.9%. Tesla was among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, finishing 1.8% lower. Some tech companies fared better. Chip company Broadcom rose 2.4%, Micron Technology added 0.6% and Adobe gained 0.5%. Health care stocks were a bright spot. CVS Health rose 1.5% and Walgreens Boots Alliance added 5.3% for the biggest gain among S&P 500 stocks. Several retailers also gained ground. Target rose 3%, Ross Stores added 2.3%, Best Buy rose 2.9% and Dollar Tree gained 3.8%. Traders are watching to see whether retailers have a strong holiday season. The day after Christmas traditionally ranks among the top 10 biggest shopping days of the year, as consumers go online or rush to stores to cash in gift cards and raid bargain bins. US-listed shares in Honda and Nissan rose 4.1% and 16.4% respectively. The Japanese car makers announced earlier this week that the two companies are in talks to combine. All told, the S&P 500 fell 2.45 points to 6,037.59. The Dow added 28.77 points to 43,325.80. The Nasdaq fell 10.77 points to close at 20,020.36. Wall Street also got a labour market update. Treasury yields mostly fell in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 4.58% from 4.59% late on Tuesday. Major European markets were closed, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Qatar Charity partners with Theeb Marathon for humanitarian effortsThe press has given Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra the nickname "Paetongphoey" -- a reference to her dependence on prepared scripts at important occasions -- as part of the year-end tradition among Government House reporters to come up with monikers for senior government officials.
