A recent bushfire in Kadnook, western Victoria, which destroyed at least one property and burned more than 1,000 hectares of land, is being investigated due to suspicion it was deliberately lit . This is not an isolated example. About 28% of bushfires in south-east Australia are deliberately lit . The figure rises to 40% if we’re only talking about fires with a known cause. These figures are consistent with international trends and tell us preventing arson and unsafe fire behaviour alone could significantly reduce the number of bushfires. Despite this, prevention of deliberately lit bushfires is mostly absent from emergency, public health and climate action plans. These fires are devastating Deliberately lit bushfires can spread rapidly and have devastating consequences. They often occur on the edge of urban areas close to populated places, where there are both dense vegetation and flammable structures. We see a peak in bushfires during summer when hot temperatures, low rainfall, and dry conditions make fire a more potent threat. Climate change, land management practices, and increased interaction between people and rural areas increase our vulnerability to fire and the risks associated with deliberate fires. The royal commission into Victoria’s devastating Black Saturday fires in 2009 reported 173 people died and an additional 414 were injured . The commission concluded at least three of the 15 fires that caused (or had the potential to cause) the greatest harm were deliberately lit. The commission concluded we need to better understand arson. It recommended research to improve how best to prevent arson and how to detect who’s at risk of offending. Nearly 15 years on from Black Saturday, these recommendations have not been implemented. There is also very limited evidence globally about how to prevent both bushfire arson and deliberately lit fires more broadly (for instance, fires set to structures or vehicles). Who lights these fires? We know little about the characteristics and psychology of people who light bushfires or how to intervene to prevent these fires. The little research we have suggests there is no one “profile” or “mindset” associated with deliberately lighting bushfires. But there are some risk factors or vulnerabilities we see more commonly in people who light them. These include: an interest or fascination with fire or fire paraphernalia. This could include an interest in watching fire, or a fascination with matches or the fire service experiences of social isolation, including a lack of friends or intimate relationships increased impulsivity general antisocial behaviour, such as contact with the police, truanting or property damage difficulties managing and expressing emotions problems with being assertive. However, most people with these vulnerabilities will never light a fire. Research shows rates of mental illness are higher in people who set fires (including schizophrenia, mood and anxiety disorders, personality dysfunction, and substance use disorders). However, mental health symptoms are rarely a direct cause of firesetting . Instead, they appear to worsen existing vulnerabilities. Why do people light these fires? There are many, complex reasons why people light fires. Commonly reported drivers include : relieving boredom or creating excitement, gaining positive recognition for putting out a fire (they want to be seen as a hero), as a cry for help, or because they’re angry. However, not everyone who lights a fire intends to cause serious damage or harm. In some cases, people may not be aware of the possible consequences of lighting a fire or that the fire may spread into a bushfire. Knowing these kinds of facts about people who light bushfires is important. However, they don’t help us prevent people from lighting fires in the first place. This is because authorities don’t always know who sets the fires. So how can we prevent this? First, we can learn more about why people set fires more generally, particularly those who do not attract attention from authorities. Research in the United States , United Kingdom and New Zealand has started to investigate those who set fires but don’t attract police attention. The aim is to identify ways to prevent people lighting fires in the first place, and support them so they don’t light more. There is almost no research in Australia or internationally into the effects of community awareness, and prevention campaigns or targeted strategies to prevent firesetting, including bushfire arson, in higher risk groups. We know slightly more about interventions to reduce repeat firesetting. Fire safety education programs delivered by fire and rescue services show some promise as an early intervention for children and adolescents who have already set a fire, particularly those motivated by curiosity, experimentation, or who are not aware of the consequences. There is also some evidence suggesting specialist psychological interventions can be effective in reducing vulnerabilities associated with adult firesetting. Forensic or clinical psychologists typically deliver a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy (a type of talking therapy), skills building (such as building coping skills, emotion and impulse control, and reducing their interest in fire), and fire safety education. However, availability of firesetting interventions is patchy both in Australia and internationally. Interventions that are available are also not always tailored to people with complex needs , such as those with significant emotional or behavioural problems or mental health needs. We also don’t know if these interventions lead to a long-term change in behaviour. Climate change is making this urgent The continued and escalating effects of climate change makes it more urgent than ever to address the problem of deliberate firesetting, including bushfire arson . Failing to address deliberate firesetting will have significant long-term consequences for public health, human life and the environment. But until funding is available for Australian arson research, identifying and helping people who are more likely to set fires will continue to be based on guesswork rather than evidence. A new report made in consultation with people who use drugs calls for federal decriminalization, expanded access to overdose prevention sites and several other measures designed to mitigate and eventually end the toxic drug crisis. Seven calls for action are laid out in the report by the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition, which over three years held 13 public consultations. The coalition said nearly 800 people were included in the meetings. Beeta Senedjani, the coalition's community policy and network co-ordinator, hopes the report will provide Canadians — and, crucially, policy makers — insight into the damage the crisis and a lack of available services are inflicting on communities. “I believe that in terms of the general public, there's a misunderstanding that what is happening is an increase in substance use, whereas really it’s the supply that's creating such devastating consequences. That's a nuance that I think is not fully understood.” The toxic drug supply, poisoned by an influx of fentanyl, has killed over 15,000 British Columbians since the provincial government declared a crisis in 2016, as well as over 47,000 Canadians. Data released by Statistics Canada on Dec. 4 shows B.C. led all provinces in deaths per 100,000 population in 2023, followed by Alberta and Saskatchewan. But the coalition's report also comes as federal and provincial governments backtrack from programs meant to confront the crisis. The B.C. NDP ended its decriminalization pilot program due to public outcry, and last month closed the addictions ministry while making the crisis the responsibility of new Health Minister Josie Osborne . Premier David Eby has also dismissed a call by former chief coroner Lisa Lapointe to add non-prescription drugs to its safe supply program. A decrease in federal funding has led to the closure of social sites such as Nelson's Coordinated Access Hub earlier this year. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has also promised to end funding for safe supply programs in favour of expanded treatment facilities if he is elected prime minister in next year's federal election. Senedjani criticized the politicization of the drug crisis. The coalition's report, she said, offers evidence instead of rhetoric. “Whenever the most marginalized people in our community are being targeted by politicians, we need to ask ourselves why, and really look at that with a critical view, because usually it's not in our best interest as a collective.” The report features 87 recommendations under seven calls to action. They include: 1. The collection of disaggregated statistics for drug fatalities and hospitalizations to better show how the crisis is impacting diverse communities such as Indigenous, African, Caribbean and Black peoples. Senedjani said current reporting typically focuses on age and gender, and doesn't include more specific demographics for communities that can be used to show how they are being impacted by the crisis in ways that differ from the rest of Canada. 2. Expansion of access to harm reduction services, which are designed for public use and don't feature specialized supports for racialized, Indigenous or LGBTQ2 peoples. Vancouver's SisterSpace, an overdose prevention site exclusive to women, is a model for how other services might cater to certain demographics. “We don't want to then further marginalize people who have multiple marginalized identities in being able to access services that are already so hard to access.” 3. Decriminalization of all criminal penalties for substance use. Senedjani said feedback heard during the consultations included people who were unable to receive healthcare because they had been labelled as seeking drugs by medical professionals, which also dismissed the validity of their health concerns. 4. The displacement of the toxic drugs with increased access to safe supply that includes drugs of known content and dosage. B.C.'s safe supply program distributes pharmaceutical opioids, which have been criticized as ineffective substitutes for alternatives such as lab-tested heroin. “We need to think about alternatives, and we need to think about ways to make this make sense and have this meet the needs of the devastating issue that we're facing today.” 5. Meaningful consultation, and compensation, with people who use drugs when developing policy. As an example, Senedjani referred to Reclaim Collection, an advocacy group made up of people with lived experience. 6. Expanded affordable housing availability as well as a more diverse range of options for people in need of services. Senedjani said the drug and housing crises in Canada are intertwined. “I think that people as individuals are being blamed for a housing crisis and a toxic drug crisis, when really these are structural, systemic issues that are happening clean across the country, and they require work at the same time on both of those prongs in order to improve social wellness and improve our communities well across the country.” 7. Expanded harm reduction services in housing and shelter settings. The consultations heard from shelter workers who were traumatized by finding people poisoned to death by drugs at their facilities. Senedjani said Toronto's Integrated Prevention and Harm Reduction Initiative, which was designed to address drug deaths in city shelters by including supervised consumption and mental health case management, is a model that other municipalities should consider. “It's important for shelter providers to look at developing proper harm reduction policies, because whether they like it or not it's going to happen, and so they might as well make it safe for everyone involved, including the person accessing the service and the people who are supporting them and trying to do their jobs in a in a proper way.”Popular but problematic plan

An illegal alien accused of causing the crash that killed 12-year-old Travis Wolfe in Hazelwood, Missouri, last year is now out of jail without paying any bail. Endrina Bracho, an illegal alien from Venezuela, was charged in March with one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of child endangerment, and one count of driving without a license after allegedly causing a December 2023 crash that left Wolfe dead and his parents, Timothy and Stephanie Wolfe, injured. Bracho’s lawyer told local media that part of Hilton’s decision centered on allowing the accused to spend time with her family during the Christmas holiday. “What about my family? We don’t get to go see Travis,” Wolfe’s sister Taylor told FOX2 Now. “He doesn’t get to come home and see us. She took that from us.” Bracho, while out of jail, must wear a GPS tracking device and has been forbidden from driving a vehicle. She has also been ordered not to contact the Wolfe family. Bracho had previously been ordered held in jail on $500,000 bail. Sen. WASHINGTON — Special counsel Jack Smith moved to abandon two criminal cases against Donald Trump on Monday, acknowledging that Trump’s return to the White House will preclude attempts to federally prosecute him for retaining classified documents or trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The decision was inevitable, since longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Yet it was still a momentous finale to an unprecedented chapter in political and law enforcement history, as federal officials attempted to hold accountable a former president while he was simultaneously running for another term. Trump emerges indisputably victorious, having successfully delayed the investigations through legal maneuvers and then winning re-election despite indictments that described his actions as a threat to the country's constitutional foundations. The outcome makes it clear that, when it comes to a president and criminal accusations, nothing supersedes the voters' own verdict. In May, she indefinitely canceled the trial date amid a series of unresolved legal issues before dismissing the case outright two months later. Smith’s team appealed the decision, but now has given up that effort. Trump faced two other state prosecutions while running for president. One them, a New York case involving hush money payments, resulted in a conviction on felony charges of falsifying business records. It was the first time a former president had been found guilty of a crime. The sentencing in that case is on hold as Trump's lawyers try to have the conviction dismissed before he takes office, arguing that letting the verdict stand will interfere with his presidential transition and duties. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office is fighting the dismissal but has indicated that it would be open to delaying sentencing until Trump leaves office. Bragg, a Democrat, has said the solution needs to balance the obligations of the presidency with “the sanctity of the jury verdict." Joe Rogan said that Democrats are “scrambling” to “create their own version” of his popular Spotify podcast following Donald Trump ’s win in the 2024 presidential election. The host of “ The Joe Rogan Experience ” had interviewed Trump in October but was unable to bring Vice President Kamala Harris on as a guest. “I think these ‘Call Her Daddy’ [podcast] shows and all these different shows that [Harris] went on, I mean, I’m sure they had an impact,” he told software engineer Marc Andreessen. “But I think that in the future, I’m sure they’re scrambling to try to create their own version of this show. This is one thing that keeps coming up, like, ‘We need our own Joe Rogan.’” “But they had me,” he added. “I was on their side.” Andreessen agreed with Rogan, replying, “The [Democrats] had you, and they drove you away. That’s No. 1. But they also have, you know, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN. Right?” The martial arts commentator argued that traditional TV networks don’t have the same impact as podcast appearances in the current political climate. “But that doesn’t work anymore. It’s like, you know, like you’re using smoke signals, and everybody else has a cell phone,” Rogan said. “It’s just it’s a bizarre time.” Rogan, who endorsed President-elect Donald Trump on the eve of the election, previously endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) during his 2020 presidential campaign. Rogan also showed support for independent candidate and vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for president in this year’s election, calling him the “ the only one that makes sense to me ” in August. Over the summer, Rogan said he “could see” Harris triumphing over Trump in November’s election. “I’m saying it because she could,” Rogan said during a July 30 episode of his podcast, not long after President Joe Biden stepped back from his campaign. “I’m not saying it because I think she’s going to, and I’m not saying it because I want her to. I’m just being honest. I could see her winning.” On Tuesday, Harris’ campaign aides explained on “Pod Save America” why the vice president’s interview with Rogan fell through. “I hate to repeat this over and over, but it was a very short race with a limited number of days and for a candidate to leave the battleground and go to Houston, which is a day off the playing field in the battleground [states],” Stephanie Cutter said. “So, we had discussions with Joe Rogan’s team. They were great. They wanted us to come on. We wanted to come on. We tried to get a date to make it work, and ultimately we just weren’t able to find a date.” Cutter claimed that Rogan’s team “never confirmed” with them and Trump ended up taping with Rogan that same day, adding, “We kind of figured that out in the leadup to it.” Another Harris aide, David Plouffe, added: “We offered to do it in Austin. On average, consumers are expected to spend $71.36 per person on holiday decorations this year, according to the National Retail Federation , compared to $60.43 in 2020. However, certain items will cost you a lot more. “The scammer is able to get, you know, sometimes, $300 to $400 for these trees. They offer it a slight discount in comparison to a reputable website,” said Campbell. And the BBB said it’s happening again this year. A reverse image search shows the exact same product photos on other retailer's websites. The customer service phone number rings until you get a message that the call cannot be completed as dialed, and the company claims to be a BBB-accredited business. “They never ship the item, and the customer is never able to contact the business, because this business is not actually at the location that's listed on their website,” said Campbell. Homeowners are also taking their decorations outside and hiring individuals to hang their lights, but sometimes they’re a no-show. Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Past NBA General Secretary – I will spend time with kith and kin in the village Christmas for me is a period of celebration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, but, the Christmas season or period is also a period of stock taking and review of performance targets that I set for myself for the year in review. It is a season of reflection, a season of thanksgiving and love. As a family, we will travel down to the village to spend time with kith and kin, participate in community activities and development programmes, and generally engage the grassroots with a view to share knowledge and perspectives. Jean Chiazor-Anishere, SAN – I will be cooking and sharing meals For me, Christmas is a time to reflect on themes of hope, love, joy and peace. Beyond its religious significance, Christmas is characterised by gift-giving, festive meals, family gatherings, parties and acts of kindness. I love Christmas Season, because it also symbolises togetherness, gratitude and the spirit of generosity. I will spend it with my loved ones, cooking, sharing my meals and wines. I also love to decorate my huge Christmas tree with friends and loved ones, and it is a time I give out gifts to my clients in appreciation of their patronage over the year and exchange gifts with friends and loved ones. I look forward to visiting the Jazz club with friends. Its merry making with my son, who will be visiting from England. Well, it’s not only party all the way, but I will also have some personal reflection by attending Church service and carol nights because its only at Christmas, that one gets to listen to and sing the evergreen and melodious Christmas carols. For the New Year, 2025, I look forward to the exciting fireworks and the New Year’s Eve gathering to count down to midnight. I look forward to writing meaningful and achievable resolutions and goals for the New Year. I hope to use the first days of the New Year to relax, reset and focus on self-care.Then as the New Year settles in, make plans with my son on his work in England and other projects. The New Year celebrations to me, is not complete without going to the beach for a good picnic with my son and some old friends of his and mine. Paul Harris Ogbole, SAN – I will visit the Motherless Babies Home Christmas is a time to renew our minds, with the knowledge of God’s love for mankind. It is a time to remind ourselves of the Jesus Christ who came into world, to demonstrate the love of God in salvation. I will spend the Christmas and New Year with family and friends, visit the Motherless Babies Home and attend Christmas Carols. Epilogue For Nigerian Lawyers, there will obviously be little work and plenty play, this Christmas and New Year Season. Letting down our hair this week and the next, resting from court appearances and our busy schedules, it will be Lawyers merry-making in the cities and their villages, in the spirit of the Yuletide. Despite the economic hardship that Nigerians have faced this year, this season is always a time of joy and thanksgiving to God.
