Australia edge out US to reach Davis Cup semi-finals, Sinner inspires ItalyBy Dwayne Mahimkar* Apia, Samoa – 26 November 2024 – Part of the visit by the staff and students of Monash University GIG Initiative, explored the socio-cultural aspects of Samoa achieving certain Sustainable Development Goals. The students visited the Samoa Recycling and Waste Management Association (SRWMA) site at Tafaigata to study waste management and recycling of non-renewable resources and how they are handled. The discussions of their visit were held at the USP Samoa lecture room, where they reflected and shared what they had learnt or discovered at the site. Jack Scott, one of the students of the visiting delegation, took a video of what appeared to be mounds of plastic and other rubbish at the site they visited. He shared how the authority handles the huge amounts of waste that are from across the country, and they are from rubbish compartments from families; manufacturing companies; restaurants etc. Some of the waste separated and packaged for recycling. Students discussed issues occurring in these sites such as staff turnover, lack of funding and resources to work with the wastes, and most would end in landfills. The students had to split up into their working groups and got to experience what it is like to study on a campus such as USP Samoa, with its pristine environment, and breathtaking views. After a lunch break, it was then time for the local insight session of the day. The session focused on ‘Youth Activism in SDGs’, and comprised three presentations and a Q&A panel. The first speaker was Samantha Kwan of Conservation International. Her presentation focused on the Guardians Programme. It is a grassroots initiative where Indigenous learning, environmental conservation and its connection to ‘Fa’asamoa’ (Samoan way of life). A video was presented to the audience of USP and Monash students combined, showcasing the activities undertaken by the programme. Pauli Uitualagi Fetu Saili, owner of Lele Homestead, did a presentation on gender equality, and socio-economic issues in local business. She is a part of the Samoa Women’s Association of Growers (SWAG), a non-profit organisation that promotes primary productions led by Samoan women, from rural areas. Fetu Saili started her business as a dream from her mother, to help her sisters (Fetu’s aunties) secure food resources. She shared her successes and struggles with running a business, such as employment and financing, whilst providing for her family and adapting to climate change. The final presentation was by Doris Tulifau, the founder of Brown Girl Woke (BGW), a feminist organisation that addresses social injustices and human rights issues. Doris’ presentation was a reality check on achieving the 17 SDGs of the United Nations (UN), particularly Goal #5 (Gender Equality). She stated that by 2030 (the expected deadline when all countries meet the SDGs), most countries still have yet to achieve at least one or most of the goals. According to Doris, it will take more time for all countries to practically achieve all the SDGs. The presenters: Fetu Saili (SWAG), Doris Tulifau (BGW) & Samantha Kwan (Conservation International Samoa). In her presentation, she gave a socio-cultural outlook of Samoa and she discussed the importance of addressing social issues such as gender-based violence, mental health, suicide and others, while also respecting traditional concepts. Doris has been very outspoken on these issues and is never afraid to address the flaws within society, hence, the NGO was rarely invited to community-level events. The questions from the students ranged from Indigenous learning to youth engagement to colonial influence and hangover. Questions and Answers session. On the fifth day of the Monash University GIG initiative in Samoa, the students learn about the culture by visiting some major cultural sites in Samoa. The day started with a visit to the National University of Samoa (NUS) where Ta’iao Dr Matiu Matavai Tautunu, director of the Center of Samoan Studies, gave a briefing on what the centre does. He covered the connection between culture and climate change in Samoa and shared the NUS Centre of Samoan Studies and the disciplines they cover; from history to culture and archaeology. The director also gave some insight into the significance of the Ava ceremony, village and hierarchical structures, and more details about Samoan history and the people who have studied it.

Lam says DAP Sarawak, as part of the unity government, successfully tabled and amended the SLO within just two years in office. KUCHING (Dec 14): The passing of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Amendment) Bill 2024, has highlighted Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) failure to safeguard the interests of Sarawakians during its over 60 years in power, said Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak secretary George Lam. In contrast, Lam said Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak, as part of the unity government, successfully tabled and amended the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (SLO) within just two years in office. This milestone, he said, marked a revolutionary improvement for Sarawakian workers and demonstrates DAP’s ‘people-first’ spirit. “The provisions of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance had been out of sync with the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Law for 20 years, neglecting the rights of Sarawakian workers for two decades. “GPS, formerly Sarawak Barisan Nasional, including SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party), had failed to secure the rightful interests of Sarawakians during its 60-plus-years in power. “However, after DAP took office, immediate efforts were made to consult various agencies and NGOs (non-governmental organisations), culminating in the successful amendment and passage of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance in Parliament yesterday,” he said in a statement yesterday. With the passing of the amendment, Lam said that Sarawakian workers earning a monthly salary of RM4,000 or less are now entitled to a maximum of 45 working hours per week. “Any hours beyond this must be compensated with overtime pay. Additionally, maternity leave has been increased to 98 days, with fathers now entitled to seven days of paternity leave. “Employers are also prohibited from dismissing pregnant employees, and issues such as workplace sexual harassment could be addressed under the revised legislation,” he said. Lam said this long-awaited amendment grants Sarawakian workers the rights they have been denied for nearly 20 years, making it a significant milestone. “Today, we thank Human Resources Minister Steven Sim for hearing the voices of Sarawakian workers and successfully tabling and passing this bill within just one year of his appointment. “SUPP has failed to address grassroots concerns during its six decades in power. If SUPP had taken the people’s voices seriously, Sarawakians would not have had to wait 20 years for these rights,” he said. “DAP, by contrast, have worked tirelessly to fulfil the people’s wishes and succeeded in amending the Sarawak Labour Ordinance within a short period, highlighting the fundamental difference between the DAP and SUPP. “While SUPP, under GPS, focused on cronyism and large-scale projects for personal gain – ignoring grassroots voices – the DAP Sarawak will continue to be the strongest pillar for the people of Sarawak, putting public interest first and assisting the federal government in implementing policies that benefit the people,” he added. As a member of the DAP Sarawak committee, Lam believes what Sarawakians need most now is a political party that truly understands the voices of the people. He criticised SUPP and GPS for “being out of touch” and “governing based on their own perspectives while ignoring grassroots needs”. “DAP Sarawak remains steadfast in standing with the people and we urge Sarawakians to unite in the upcoming state elections to strengthen DAP’s voice in representing the people of Sarawak and protecting our interests,” he said.
Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Noah Hanifin will make his 700 th career NHL game when he takes the ice against the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday at Wells Fargo Center. Hanifin, in his first full season with the Golden Knights, scored 65 goals with 232 assists in his 10 NHL seasons. “He’s calm out there. He’s got good composure. He doesn’t get rattled and plays a lot of minutes for us. Plays in all situations. I think he knows what he is,’ Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He’s a guy that can really use his feet to help him in many areas of the game. ... He wants to initiate. I like that about Noah. Every play, he wants to be involved. He wants to make something happen. You got to be careful with that when your feet are that good that you don’t chase the game. He’s done a good job letting the game come to him most nights.” About the Flyers The Flyers come into the game off a 3-2 overtime victory on Nov. 23 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Philadelphia is 9-10-2 on the season. “They’re more grinder [team]. They work really hard,” Golden Knights forward Tomas Hertl said. “They don’t leave any pucks behind. It’ll definitely be a tough game. They’re more straightforward: forecheck hard and grind it.” The Flyers are a gritty team that will attempt to clog the shooting lanes and block shots. Cassidy said the team has to be aware of this and not get frustrated when shots are going through. “They’re a hard-working team. They’re a team that works hard to block shots. The preparation today is you got to create your shooting lanes,” Cassidy said. “You got to hang around the front of the net. There are going to be opportunities. You’re going to get frustrated because they do a good job.” Paul Delos Santos is the Las Vegas sports insider for Dice City Sports. Follow him on X at @PaulDelos_ . Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh are brothers (if you didn't know that, ), and on Monday, Jim's Chargers play John's Ravens. As you can probably guess, it's a massive showdown for several reasons, and the pair will likely have family in the stands to see them go head-to-head at SoFi Stadium. However, some very important people to both coaches won't be there: Jack and Jackie Harbaugh, their parents. , Jack and Jackie are in Florida with their daughter Joani and son-in-law Tom Crean (plus two grandkiddos) to celebrate 63 years of marriage. How sweet! Jackie and Jack Harbaugh will not be attending tonight’s Ravens-Chargers game in Los Angeles. Instead, they will be with their daughter Joani, son-in-law Tom Crean, and their two grandchildren in Florida, celebrating their 63rd anniversary. “Back in 1957 in that biology class, I... — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter)CM: Govt aims to give 3L permanent jobs to youthNEW YORK — Nebraska football writer Luke Mullin offers his extra points from the Husker football team's 20-15 bowl game win over Boston College on Saturday. Play of the game: Rahmir Johnson's fourth-down conversion late in the fourth quarter. On a play where Nebraska needed to gain 1 yard to ice the game, Johnson came up with 11 instead and gained a first down that the Huskers simply needed to have. Had he been stopped short, Boston College could've gotten a chance to come all the way back for a win, but Johnson ensured that didn't happen. Turning point: Boston College's missed field goal in the first quarter. Having intercepted a Dylan Raiola pass, the Eagles drove into Nebraska territory and had a chance to take a 3-0 lead. When the drive stalled out and BC's long field goal try missed, momentum was back on NU's side, where it remained for much of the game. Quotable: "I don't think you should say 6-7 (record), that's such a miserable thought right now. Let's be positive, guys, we just won a bowl game!" Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule on what it meant to end the season with a win. Game ball: Rahmir Johnson. The MVP of the bowl game certainly deserves a game ball, and Johnson earned it as the hometown hero playing in front of family and friends. The sixth-year senior played one of his best games as a Husker in his final game with the team. Game ball: The entire Nebraska defense. The final score shows that it was a close game, and it's only that way because of Nebraska's ability to stop Boston College inside its own territory. A below-average game from the Husker defense could've led to a BC win instead, but Nebraska played at a high level and won the game because of it. Hat tip: To Dylan Raiola, who made big passes and gained key yardage with his legs when the situation required it. An early interception didn't do much to detract from Raiola's performance as the true freshman led Nebraska to a win. Questionable: There wasn't much to complain about, but Nebraska's decision to attempt a fake field goal might just warrant it. Given that the Huskers had already converted a fake punt, Boston College was bound to be alert for the chance of a fake and indeed it was. There was no issue with going for the try, but Nebraska would've been better served by keeping its offense on the field rather than trying some trickery once again. Tone-setter: Jahmal Banks' one-handed catch. While it didn't lead to any points, Banks' grab showed that Nebraska was going to go after the one-on-one matchup that BC afforded it. The Huskers made great use of those situations to move the ball all game long. 10: Different Huskers who caught a pass on Saturday, including defensive back Isaac Gifford. 7: Consecutive Boston College drives which ended without points to begin the game. 2-for-2: Punter Brian Buschini's passing statistics this season, having thrown for 38 yards on his two tries. 7: Tackles for a loss recorded by the Nebraska defense, three of which being quarterback sacks. 3,290: Days since Nebraska's last bowl game win during the 2015 season.Walmart Inc. Tesla stock ( TSLA ) is down Monday following a strong recent run-up as one Wall Street bank says “animal spirits” have pushed the stock beyond any “fundamental change” at the company. Joseph Spak at UBS noted that Tesla stock has surged around 40% since the election, adding over $350 million to its market cap. While some of President-elect Donald Trump's policy proposals could favor Tesla, there are some policy negatives as well that would hurt fundamentals more than where the theoretical upside has taken the stock. “The rise in Tesla stock is mostly driven by animal spirits/momentum (which has happened multiple times in TSLA’s history),” Spak wrote. Tesla stock is down around 1% in midday trade, coming after Spak and UBS reiterated a rare Sell rating with a price target hike, to $226 from $197, for Tesla. Investors took Tesla stock to multiyear highs following Trump’s election win, mainly on the back of CEO Elon Musk’s full-throated endorsement of Trump. In return, Trump has unofficially placed Musk in his inner circle, allowed him to sit in on policy meetings, and named him to run a government efficiency council. Trump has also said his view on electric vehicles has improved due to Musk’s presence, though reports from the transition team claim the federal EV tax credit could be on the chopping block. While the removal of tax credits could hurt Tesla’s competitors more than Tesla itself, the calculation is not that simple. “The removal of consumer tax credits is not an absolute positive for US EV (and TSLA) demand. TSLA may have some new models/refreshes on the way which could help. But, we've seen pricing action (not including tax credits) only stabilize demand. So if credits go away, further pricing actions may be needed,” Spak wrote. The other bullish outcome for Tesla from Trump’s win is a more friendly regulatory environment, especially for Tesla’s robotaxi rollout. While there is a view that an easier regulatory “hurdle” is positive for Tesla’s robotaxi service, there is tempered by the fact that there really aren't any onerous federal autonomous vehicle regulations to "relax," Spak wrote, as the bigger issues are dealt with on a state-by-state basis. In fact, the bigger robotaxi challenge could be the technology itself. “A change in regulation doesn't immediately solve, nor change the timeline to solve, the technological challenge of unsupervised [Full Self-Driving],” Spak wrote. “We continue to believe that FSD is improving, but the product is not ready for wide scale robotaxi deployment.” As for the hike with his price target, Spak said stock is essentially at his prior upside case valuation, and using the bank’s 57 times forward 2026 price-earnings ratio nets a $226 price target which is well below the current stock price. Spak isn’t here to pour cold water on Tesla’s recent monster move. He just isn’t buying it from a fundamental point of view, especially over the long run. For Tesla and its 40% rally in less than a month, that often doesn’t matter. “From a narrative perspective, especially if one were valuation agnostic, we get it,” Spak said. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Walmart’s Mexico subsidiary said Friday it plans to appeal a $4.6 million fine for Walmart de Mexico said in a statement that it had talked with suppliers to see if there were any concerns. The agency that issued the fine, known as the Federal Competition Commission, expressed concerns about a “relative monopolistic practice.” The commission, Mexico’s main anti-monopoly regulatory agency, is one of several independent agencies soon to be eliminated as part of what the government describes as a money-saving measure. It apparently levied the fine after at least one rival store chain accused Walmart of using its substantial purchasing power to gain discounts that put other sellers at a disadvantage. Walmart is by far the largest retail chain in Mexico. It called the decision “incorrect” and said it contained “errors in applying the law.” The company said it would abide by the agency’s ruling Thursday, but would appeal the decision. Walmart’s shares rose about 7.5% on the Mexican stock exchange Friday. The Associated Press
