resident-elect Donald Trump met with moderator Kristen Welker for his first televised broadcast network interview since his win in the November presidential election against Vice President Kamala Harris. As the U.S. and the rest of the world prepares for Trump’s return to the White House in January, there is much discussion about what the President-elect plans to do once he takes office alongside his Vice President, J.D. Vance. In the sit-down interview, which took place on Friday, Dec. 6 and aired on Sunday, Dec. 8, Trump covered a range of high-profile topics, including his plans related to abortion, immigration, tariffs, and his controversial Administration selections. He also spoke about his foreign policy plans. Here are some of the key topics Trump spoke out about in his televised interview as he prepares for his second presidency. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned in 2022, Trump has often applauded himself for the ruling. Throughout the 2024 election, abortion played a large role as the Trump-Vance ticket went head-to-head with Harris and her VP pick, Tim Walz. Trump argued he would not sign a federal ban on abortion when elected, while the Harris-Walz ticket argued that Trump would further restrict abortion rights if re-elected. When asked whether he would restrict abortion pill access, Trump told Welker: “I’ll probably stay with exactly what I’ve been saying for the last two years. And the answer is no." This comes after Vance tried to seem more moderate on abortion in the vice presidential debate, Standing on the podium, Vance said that the Republican party needs "to do so much better of a job at earning the American people’s trust back on this issue where they frankly just don’t trust us.” Welker asked Trump, who was convicted during a high-profile earlier this year, whether he plans to pardon Jan. 6 rioters when in office. Retribution will be through success.” He stated that he would not appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Biden, something he proposed on , “unless I find something that I think is reasonable.” He also called out Biden’s recent choice to after previously stating that he would not, saying: “I always knew he was going to give him a pardon.” Trump will be the oldest U.S. President by the end of his term—and , particularly when it was Biden going head-to-head with Trump. When Welker pointed out that experts have said such tariffs could impact the prices of a range of imported goods, from cars to electronics, Trump defended his idea. “I’m a big believer in tariffs. When asked if he could guarantee the tariffs would not impact pricing for the average American he said: “I can’t guarantee anything, I can’t guarantee tomorrow.” Trump emphasized that immigration will be one of the first things he will begin working on when he returns to the White House. Throughout the campaign, Trump promised a slew of new policies regarding immigration, including mass deportations, ending birthright citizenship, and reinstating the “ policy. Trump doubled down on some of these policies, arguing that he will be focused on deporting migrants who came to America illegally and have criminal records first, but that eventually the aim would be for all illegal immigrants to be deported. “Well, I think you have to do it... it’s a very tough thing to do. But you have to have, you know, you have rules, regulations, laws. Sydenham District Councillor Conny Glenn is among 41 municipal city councillors who signed an open letter requesting the Ontario Big City Mayors (OBCM) rescind an open letter calling for the use of the notwithstanding clause, and instead explore “evidence-based solutions to homelessness.” Glenn said on Tuesday that councillors who signed the letter are concerned that using the notwithstanding clause is overreach from the provincial government, and that not all options have been exhausted to get to that point. She says at the end of the day, its not a practical route if it’s actually about helping people, and will take a lot more expense and work than is being communicated by the province or the OBCM. “Even if you use the notwithstanding clause the simple reality is that we do not have the resources available to house and treat people,” Glenn said. “This is not as simple as it’s painted out that ‘hey, we’ll just sweep everybody up and take care of it’. It doesn’t work that way.” Glenn says councillors were also concerned that the letter was sent based on the suggestion of Doug Ford. While Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson was not a signatory of the letter from OBCM, he is a member of the group and has said he remains in support of everything the OBCM is asking for. On the same day the letter came out, the Ontario government tabled The Safer Streets, Stronger Communities Act, which takes aim at supervised consumption sites, among other changes to enforcement and road laws. The legislation would close any supervised consumption site that is within 200 metres of a school or any child care centre, and would also require municipalities to get permission from the province in order to open new sites. While the legislation doesn’t explicitly ban them in the province, it does insert itself in between municipalities and the federal government for exceptions in order to run the sites. Health Minister Sylvia Jones has also told reporters, plainly, that no more supervised consumption sites will be opened under the oversight of the Ford government. As an alternative, the provincial government will open intensive addiction recovery HART hubs, 19 of which are set to be opened in the province under a $378 million budget. Dr. Piotr Oglaza, KFL&A Public Health’s Medical Officer of Health, said the HART hubs could be an effective tool in helping to meet people where they are in their recovery journey, but that supervised consumption sites also play a significant role in the current landscape. “Harm reduction programs and services such as supervised consumption sites, safer supply programs, and needle syringe programs have demonstrated many health and social benefits,” Dr. Oglaza said in a statement. “Harm reduction is based off a set of internationally recognized, evidence-based strategies that reduce deaths and unsafe drug-use behaviours, prevent certain infectious diseases and lessen the burden on emergency departments. It is a pillar of KLF&A’s comprehensive approach, and focuses on mitigating the adverse health, social and economic consequences of substance use without requiring people to stop using substances as a precondition for support.” Dr. Oglaza also noted that the Integrated Care Hub won’t among those sites forced to close due to proximity to a school or childcare facility, however it will have to adhere to enhanced mandatory reporting requirements, transparency and safety procedures if the bill passes. Councillor Glenn said encampments and supervised consumption sites are symptoms of the problem, which still aren’t being addressed sufficiently in proposals coming from the province. “What we’re likely to see then is instead of people going to one site that’s safe for consumption, people will be out in our parks and other public places potentially doing this,” Glenn said. “If we had followed up safe consumption sites with provision of more spots for treatment, more housing for people, we would see that we were making progress, but we haven’t done that in sufficient quantity to get the headway that we actually need.” She added that until more comprehensive solutions are created for those using supervised consumption sites or living in encampments, they’re an unfortunate necessity. “I don’t want encampments, I don’t want to have to have safe consumption sites. It’s an unfortunate reality that we’re in that they exist,” Glenn said. “What I want is the proper funding for us to be able to end them and that’s not what we’re getting, and trying to force people into treatment that doesn’t exist makes no sense.”By GABRIELA SÁ PESSOA and MAURICIO SAVARESE, Associated Press SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s federal police said Thursday they indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people for allegedly attempting a coup to keep him in office after his defeat in the 2022 elections. Police said their findings were being delivered Thursday to Brazil’s Supreme Court, which must decide whether to refer them to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, who will either formally charge Bolsonaro and put him on trial, or toss the investigation. The former right-wing president has denied all claims he tried to stay in office after his narrow electoral defeat in 2022 to his rival, leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has faced a series of legal threats since then. Police said in a brief statement that the Supreme Court had agreed to reveal the names of all 37 people who were indicted “to avoid the dissemination of incorrect news.” The 700-page police document likely will take several days for the court to review, Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes said. Dozens of former and current Bolsonaro aides also were indicted, including Gen. Walter Braga Netto, who was his running mate in the 2022 campaign; former Army commander Gen. Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira; Valdemar Costa Neto, the chairman of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party; and his veteran former adviser, Gen. Augusto Heleno. The investigation started last year.
