Hidden Game: Canadiens' third-period comeback against Rangers falls shortOld man’s joy no more? Some Chinese cities are cracking down on unlicensed e-scooters favoured by seniorsPITTSBURGH (AP) — Technically, the standings still show the Pittsburgh Steelers atop the AFC North. It just doesn’t exactly feel that way at the moment. While the Steelers still have everything in front of them even after a 34-17 loss in Baltimore on Saturday in which a pair of Russell Wilson turnovers and a battered defense starting to show signs of wear allowed the Ravens to pull away, the grasp they had on the division two weeks ago is now far more tenuous. There were no excuses offered afterward. Yet there’s also no time to pout either. Not with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs visiting Acrisure Stadium on Christmas Day. “The one thing I’m not going to do is keep my head down,” Wilson said shortly after a fourth-quarter pick-6 allowed Baltimore to pull away. “I know for us, we got so much great confidence in who we are and what we can do and how we’re going to respond.” If Pittsburgh wants the home playoff game that capturing a division title for the first time since 2020 would provide, it doesn’t really have a choice. To do it, the Steelers will likely have to beat the two-time defending Super Bowl champions on three days’ rest and then the Bengals in the regular-season finale, not exactly ideal opponents for an injury-marred defense that has given up more than 400 yards in consecutive weeks for the first time since the first three games of the 2019 season. Beating Philadelphia and Baltimore on the road even in the best of times is a tough ask. The Steelers came up empty twice in six days, and while Wilson’s turnovers didn’t help, Pittsburgh’s inability to match up with either team in the trenches could be a far bigger problem going forward if it can’t find a way to regain the physicality it showed earlier this season. True, the Ravens and Eagles have the two best running games in the league led by backs who are putting together Hall of Fame resumes. Still, every team the Steelers figure to face in the postseason will almost certainly try to follow the blueprint Philadelphia and Baltimore used so effectively. Pittsburgh’s truncated schedule — the visit by the Chiefs will be its third game in 11 days — means the tackling issues that have popped up of late will have to be addressed more in theory than in practice. It’s a less-than-ideal situation. Yet despite the step or two back recently, the Steelers believe that everything they want to do this season is still in front of them. That’s certainly true. Wilson — who knows a thing or two about winning this time of year — remains upbeat. “We can’t let a tough game like this take us into a negative state of mind because there’s a lot more to play for and a lot more we’re searching for, and we can still win the (AFC) North,” he said. “There’s still a lot of opportunity there, too, as well. And so we just got to buckle down and get back to work.” What’s working Being disruptive in the red zone. Minkah Fitzpatrick’s fourth-quarter pick of Lamar Jackson — his first in 26 games — was the fifth takeaway by the Steelers inside their 20 this season, tied for second most in the NFL. What needs help Just about everything else in the red zone. The Steelers allowed Baltimore to score touchdowns on its first three drives that reached the Pittsburgh 20. The other two ended with Fitzpatrick’s interception and a chip-shot field goal by Justin Tucker in the final minutes. Two short touchdown throws from Jackson to tight ends Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews bothered Steelers coach Mike Tomlin the most. “It is just too late in the year to have guys running open like that, to be quite honest with you,” Tomlin said. “So we’ve got some work to do this week and try to shore some of that up.” Stock up Calvin Austin III is the only wide receiver who seems capable of being a difference-maker with George Pickens out of the lineup. The 5-foot-9 Austin has nine receptions for 130 yards over the past two games, and while Wilson’s fourth down heave to Austin at the goal line in the third quarter fell incomplete, it also symbolized the faith Wilson has in a highly motivated player who thrives on being underestimated. Stock down Complementary football. The Steelers surged to the top of the division by having a team that thrived in all three phases. That hasn’t happened of late. The Ravens turned Wilson’s fumble into a 96-yard touchdown drive. Fitzpatrick’s interception appeared to give the Steelers momentum only to have Wilson give it right back with a poor throw that Marlon Humphrey turned into the clinching score. Injuries Pickens could return from the hamstring injury that has forced him to miss the past three games. Safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring), defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (groin), cornerback Donte Jackson (back) could also play after sitting out against Baltimore. The news isn’t as positive for starting cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (knee) and wide receiver Ben Skowronek (hip), both of whom left against the Ravens and did not return. Key number 39 — field goals this season by Chris Boswell, five short of the NFL record set by David Akers with San Francisco in 2011. Next steps Try to heal up quickly and beat Mahomes for the first time. The Kansas City star is 3-0 against the Steelers with 14 touchdowns and zero interceptions. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflPhreesia Announces Third Quarter Fiscal 2025 Results
How Bashar al-Assad’s Regime CrumbledORCHARD PARK — The Buffalo Bills love a good reunion. Then again, Micah Hyde never officially cleaned out his locker and neither side ever closed the door on a return. Hyde walked back in the door Wednesday, officially signing to Buffalo’s practice squad. After 12 games, it seemed Hyde wasn’t going to return. He was happy living in San Diego and the Bills didn’t appear to need massive safety help, as Damar Hamlin has played 98% of the defensive snaps and Taylor Rapp has hardly left the field aside from a concussion that caused him to miss 1 1⁄2 games. From general manager Brandon Beane to head coach Sean McDermott to quarterback Josh Allen, all admitted to staying in touch with Hyde throughout the season. . While he wasn’t signed to a team after his contract expired in March, Hyde continued to workout in San Diego with trainers and a Peloton in his garage, while coaching his son’s youth soccer team. But when defensive tackle Jordan Phillips was re-signed Nov. 6, Hyde reached out to congratulate his former teammate. Phillips then asked when Hyde was coming back and their conversation ended with Phillips putting word to Beane that he might like to return. Ultimately Hyde decided to re-sign with Buffalo in the lead-up to last week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Hyde also said that he would officially retire at the end of the season. “I just wanted to come back and do anything I could do to help,” Hyde said. “If it's helping young guys understand the NFL on and off the field, older guys helping them with what they got to do on the field, whatever it may be, I'm here to help.I'm an open book, and so I'm excited for this role, and it's a new role for me.” That meant he was going to hang on to jeopardize his health or play at a diminished level to chase a Super Bowl ring. One of the reasons Hyde decided not to return immediately was that he needed time to get healthy physically and mentally. Hyde injured his neck in Week 2 of 2022, missing the remainder of the season following neck surgery. Hyde returned last season, but suffered a stinger against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9, causing him to miss the ensuing game. After returning for three games, Hyde sustained another stinger against the Chiefs, forcing him out for two more contests. Healthy again, Hyde has followed the Bills all season. Hyde missed the locker room and seeing the team celebrate wins on social media, but he never felt like it was necessary to return. “I wouldn't say it was hard, because I was extremely happy for everybody here,” Hyde said. “It wasn't like I was like, 'Damn man, I should be there.' Like, none of that. I was happy and I was living my best life in San Diego, so it was giving me time that I've never had and a new experience around my kids and being there 24/7 and all that type of stuff.” The question now centers around when Hyde suits up for a game and what his role will be when that happens. McDermott said he was pleased with his current safeties in the roles they are playing and doesn’t plan to change them. McDermott said Hyde’s role right now is to be on the practice squad and they would take it one day at a time. He also said that when the Bills traded for receiver Amari Cooper earlier in the season. Hamlin is currently second on the team with 70 tackles, while Rapp is fourth with 62. Both players have a pair of interceptions. “I’m very protective of the locker room and not only now, but for sure now, but also any time of year, especially once we’re kind of into the spring and you’re looking to drop a new person in,” McDermott said. “... It’s got to be the right person, the player, yes, but the right person based on where this team currently is, not in terms of record, but in terms of where they’re at with the relationships and different pieces of the puzzle.” McDermott’s views on locker room relationships is a big part of why 16 players have left for another team and returned. Although Hyde didn’t sign with another team, he's the third player — Phillips and Quinton Jefferson — to re-sign with the Bills in less than a month. Some of it is continuity and familiarity with McDermott and the scheme. That’s why 14 players who played for McDermott in Carolina were signed during his early years with the Bills. "Seeing the smiles, and being actually wanted, it's a hell of a drug," Phillips said after re-signing. :You can do a lot for people when it's in the right environment." WR Keon Coleman (wrist), TE Dalton Kincaid (knee), TE Quintin Morris (shoulder/groin) and WR Curtis Samuel (foot) were all limited in Wednesday’s walk-through. ... DT DeWayne Carter (wrist) and OT Tylan Grable (groin) were full participants and are eligible to return from injured reserve.
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has criticised the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Andhra Pradesh, accusing it of neglecting all sectors and not paying the fee reimbursement benefits to the students. In a post on social media platform X on November 24 (Sunday), Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the NDA was ‘playing with the lives of students’. Non-payment of fee reimbursement benefits in the last three quarters is forcing the students to discontinue their education, he alleged. “I am deeply saddened by the news that a student of J. Panguluru of Ongole district has turned into a labourer as he was unable to pay the fee,” he posted. All sectors appear to have taken the regressive path as soon as Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu assumed the office, he said, pointing out that ‘the education sector was badly hit’ with several initiatives undertaken during the YSRCP’s tenure such as Amma Vodi, English medium in schools, TOFEL from third standard, CBSE to IB, tabs to 8th class students, Byju’s content, Nadu-Nedu scheme were discontinued. Vasathi Deevena and Vidya Deevena schemes were dropped and students of professional courses are being deeply troubled, he said. ‘Benefits pending’ “During YSRCP’s tenure, we used to deposit money to mothers’ accounts quarterly. During the previous academic year until December, ₹12,609 crore was deposited for Vidya Devena. As we believe that only education can change the fate of generations, we spent ₹18,000 crore on the two schemes,” he said. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said due to the election code, the benefits for the January-March quarter could not be paid as the NDA lodged a complaint with the Election Commission. The NDA government did not pay the amount after assuming office. Vasathi Deevena has met the same fate. Now, the October-December quarter is coming to a close and fee reimbursement benefits of ₹2,800 crore is due. For Vasathi Devena, ₹1,100 crore is pending. “The total amount due by December would touch 3,900 crore. This government is high on talk and nil on deeds,” said Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The former Chief Minister further alleged the students are not getting certificates until they clear their dues. “Around 11 lakh students are affected by the neglect of the NDA government. Parents are taking loans or selling their properties. If they have no resources, they are sending their children to work. This is the situation in the State,” he said. “There have been scams in sand and liquor after the NDA government assumed office. Gambling dens are being opened. Medical colleges and ports are being privatised, but there is no concern for education. “We demand that Ammaku Vandanam, fees reimbursement and Vasathi Devena dues be released immediately,” he added. The man arrested Monday in connection to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was allegedly in possession of a type of homemade weapon known as a "ghost gun." Luigi Mangione , 26, who police named as a “ strong person of interest ” had a "ghost gun that had the capability of firing 9 mm round and a suppressor” when he was arrested on weapons charges in Altoona, Pa., New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters. > Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are A senior law enforcement official told NBC News the weapon found in Mangione's possession appears to be similar to the weapon used in the Manhattan murder. Kenny said the weapon "may have been made on a 3D printer." "Ghost guns" are firearms that can be assembled at home from parts that are bought online. Those parts can usually be obtained without background checks and do not have serial numbers. How long have ghost guns been around? The do-it-yourself kits have been around since the 1990s, but have exploded in popularity in recent years — especially among criminals. Stories that affect your life across the U.S. and around the world. Between Jan. 2016 to Dec. 2021, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it received approximately 45,000 reports of suspected privately made firearms recovered by law enforcement in criminal investigations — including 692 homicides or attempted homicides. The number of ghost guns recovered rose steadily each of those years, from 1,758 in 2016 to 19,344 in 2021, according to the Justice Department. Technology has also added to the steep increase - online videos on how to assemble the guns have millions of views , while some sellers offer 3-D printing files for customers to print and assemble the weapons themselves, and without serial numbers. The Justice Department said in a 2022 fact sheet that unserialized firearms are incredibly difficult to trace — the ATF reported it was only able to trace 0.98% of the suspected ghost guns submitted by law enforcement to an individual purchaser. What is the government doing on the issue? In 2022, President Joe Biden announced restrictions on the sale of ghost guns with the finalization of a rule requiring makers of gun kits to include serial numbers on firearms and for sellers to follow the same standard as with other guns, including requiring a background check for purchase. “These guns are the weapons of choice for many criminals,” Biden said, and “we are going to do everything we can to deprive them of that choice.” Gun rights groups and manufacturers have challenged the ATF rule in court, with a federal judge in Texas and an appeals court ruling against the Biden administration. The Supreme Court has ruled twice that the regulations can remain in place while the litigation continues. Gun safety advocates, meanwhile, have been urging Congress to take action on the issue to close loopholes and turn the rule into a law. Over a dozen states have also passed laws regulating ghost guns, according to Everytown for a Gun Safety , a gun violence prevention organization. The group and others have also been urging Congress to take action on 3D-printed guns, which the Trump administration loosened regulations on in 2020. There is no federal law barring them, but the ATF says it's illegal to make them for sale without a license, and that they must be able to be detected by metal detectors and X-ray machines. A number of states also have individual laws regulating or banning the weapons, according to Everytown. This article first appeared on NBCNews.com .
