(NYSE:O) Shares Acquired by Pathstone Holdings LLCNoneNEW YORK (AP) — A gunman killed UnitedHealthcare’s CEO on Wednesday in a “brazen, targeted attack” outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, police said, setting off a massive search for the fleeing assailant hours before the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting nearby. Brian Thompson, 50, was shot around 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The shooter appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire , New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police had not yet established a motive. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Tisch said, adding that the shooting "does not appear to be a random act of violence.” Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows someone emerging from behind a parked car, pointing a gun at Thompson’s back, then firing multiple times from several feet away. The gunman continues firing, interrupted by a brief gun jam, as Thompson stumbles forward and falls to the sidewalk. He then walks past Thompson and out of the frame. “From watching the video, it does seem that he’s proficient in the use of firearms as he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Thompson was shot at least once in the back and once in the calf, Tisch said. The shooter, who wore a jacket, face mask and large backpack, fled through Midtown on foot before pedaling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away, police said. The assailant remained at large Wednesday afternoon, sparking a search that included police drones, helicopters and dogs. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” the insurer’s Minnetonka, Minnesota-based parent company, UnitedHealth Group Inc., said in a statement. "We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.” Police issued a poster showing a surveillance image of the man pointing what appeared to be a gun and another image that appeared to show the same person on a bicycle. Minutes before the shooting, he stopped at a nearby Starbucks, according to additional surveillance photos released by police on Wednesday afternoon. They offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that he told her “there were some people that had been threatening him.” She didn’t have details but suggested the threats may have involved issues with insurance coverage. Eric Werner, the police chief in the Minneapolis suburb where Thompson lived, said his department had not received any reports of threats against the executive. The killing shook a part of New York City that's normally quiet at that hour, happening about four blocks from where tens of thousands of people were set to gather for Wednesday night’s tree lighting. Police promised extra security for the event. The hotel is also a short walk from other tourist sites, including the Museum of Modern Art and Radio City Music Hall, and is often dense with office workers and visitors on weekday mornings. Many security cameras are nearby. “We’re encouraging New Yorkers to go about their daily lives and their daily business but to be alert,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. Investigators recovered several 9 mm shell casings from outside the hotel and a cellphone from the alleyway through which the shooter fled. They were also searching Thompson's hotel room, interviewing his UnitedHealthcare colleagues and reviewing his social media, Kenny said. Police said the e-bike that the shooter used to ride into Central Park came from the city’s bike-share program, CitiBike. A spokesperson for Lyft, which operates the program, said police had not yet contacted the company. Health care giant UnitedHealth Group was holding its annual meeting with investors to update Wall Street on the company's direction and expectations for the coming year. The company ended the conference early in the wake of Thompson's death. “I’m afraid that we — some of you may know we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” a company official told attendees, according to a transcript. “And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today. ... I’m sure you’ll understand.” Thompson, a father of two sons, had been with the company since 2004 and served as CEO for more than three years. UnitedHealthcare is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the U.S. and manages health insurance coverage for employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs. Minnesota Gov. NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday expressed anguish over not being allowed to learn Hindi in Tamil Nadu as a student and was even mocked on the streets for attempting to learn the language. The Minister's reply to the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha digressed to the language issue when some Opposition members tried to corner Sitharaman over her Hindi. Recalling her experience as a student in Tamil Nadu, Sitharaman shared her experience when learning Hindi and Sanskrit was looked down upon in the southern state. "I speak from my lived experience in Tamil Nadu when even going to learn Hindi, aside from my school, I was mocked on the streets. And I was mocked saying -- oh you want to learn Hindi. You live in Tamil Nadu... and you want to learn Hindi, North India's bhasha (language). These are the words ringing in my ears... "Learning Hindi and Sanskrit are perceived as learning some other foreign language and words that they used are people who have come over to this land. Is Tamil Nadu not part of India? So what's wrong in my learning Hindi," she said in the Lower House. Sitharaman, who was born in Madurai, lamented that she was called 'vandheri' (a Tamil word loosely meaning outsider in a negative sense). "They called us vandheri. Is it not part of a political strategy there?" she wondered. The Minister said that she was denied her "fundamental right" to learn the language of her choice. "I have lived experience of Tamil Nadu imposing on me not to learn Hindi. Is that not imposition on me?," Sitharaman asked. "It's alright to say we don't want imposition of Hindi. We don't want to impose Hindi but why did they impose on me not to learn Hindi? I want to ask this," Sitharaman said. If you qualify for deductible IRA contributions , then a contribution to your traditional IRA can reduce your taxable income for 2024. Here are tips and strategies to prepare now for the 2025 tax-filing deadline. If you had significant changes in your life in 2024 — maybe you got married or divorced, started your own business, or had to claim unemployment benefits — your taxes may be more complicated. As a result, you might need to hire a certified public accountant (CPA), enrolled agent (EA) or other tax professional to prepare and file your taxes. If you decide to hire someone, it’s best to start planning for that sooner rather than later. Waiting until the calendar flips to April could cost you. The average fee for a professional to prepare and file a simple Form 1040 tax return, with no itemized deductions, is about $220, according to a survey by the National Society of Accountants in 2020-2021, the most recent data available. But that amount rises quickly for more complex returns, and varies depending on where you live. For example, a Form 1040 with itemized deductions costs an average of $432 in states on the Pacific Coast, compared with $285 in New England. Some taxpayers may also qualify for a free state tax filing, depending on the software provider. In January, the IRS will announce the income limit to qualify for the program for the 2025 tax season (for filing 2024 tax returns). For the 2024 tax season (2023 tax returns), taxpayers’ adjusted gross income (AGI) couldn’t exceed $79,000. •The IRS also offers its Direct File program, a free tool that allows you to file your federal income tax return directly with the IRS at no cost. The program supports simple tax returns and is available only in certain states. Check to see if you qualify here. •Another free-filing option is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. IRS-certified volunteers offer free basic tax preparation in person to people who earn less than $67,000 a year, are disabled or whose English is limited. The IRS has an online location tool for hundreds of free tax preparation sites in the U.S. (the locator tool is updated from February through April). Some VITA sites also offer online tax-prep assistance. Now is a good time to create an IRS online account. If you want to see your Form 1040 from last year, or you’re missing a prior year Form W-2 or mortgage interest statement, you can find your documents using this free tax tool. Another benefit of creating an IRS online account is that it allows you to quickly obtain your prior year’s tax information without sitting on the phone for hours with an IRS representative, says Carl Johnson, a certified public accountant in New Orleans. An IRS online account also lets you view your account balance and payment history for each year. You can also create a payment plan to settle your federal income tax debt within minutes. If you’re 73 years old and have enjoyed watching your 401(k) or IRA grow tax-free without touching it, remember that the IRS is going to want its share each year. That means you’ll have to make withdrawals — and pay income tax. If you turned 73 in 2024, plan to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) at the latest by April 1, 2025. Read this IRS bulletin for more information. The amount of your RMDs is based on your age and the year-end values of your retirement accounts. A Roth IRA has two big tax advantages over a traditional IRA : Qualified withdrawals are not considered income for federal (and usually state) tax purposes, and you don’t have to take distributions from a Roth every year once you reach age 73. Converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA may save you money in the long run. Just know that when you convert an IRA to a Roth, it’s considered taxable income, which will raise your tax bill for that year. Generally, it’s best to convert to a Roth IRA when you’re in a low-income year. As tax season approaches, many people start receiving phone calls, emails and texts from entities claiming to be the IRS. Be wary, and understand that these are scams. Typically, the IRS will mail you a notice before using any other method of communication to notify you concerning issues with your tax return. The IRS won’t reach out via social media or text messaging. Relatedly, the IRS warns taxpayers to be careful when choosing a tax preparer. Taking time to vet your tax preparer is crucial to protect yourself from tax scams and fraud. Before hiring a tax professional, search that person’s name in the IRS database of federal tax return preparers to avoid dishonest “professionals.” “Taxpayers should check the tax professional’s credentials,” Johnson says. Tax pros without credentials “may take questionable positions without any degree of scrutiny or fear of losing their access to the profession,” Johnson says. Taxpayers who don’t file a tax return and owe a tax bill, or who file but don’t pay their tax bill on time, risk severe penalties. The IRS can even seize assets if necessary. Respond quickly if the IRS has been sending you letters because it found an error on your return or claims you owe back taxes. Typically, the IRS will send you a notice if you have a balance due, changes were made to your tax return, or the agency needs additional information. “If you ignore a collection letter from the IRS, you may face wage garnishments, liens, bank levies, and other adverse action. Make copies of your correspondence and use only the U.S. Postal Service, the postmark from which is your proof of timeliness when responding. How many calibrations should a TV get? Check that TV model again? John in the U.K. writes: How highly would you rate the 55-inch Samsung Neo QLED QN55D? I entered myself into a competition draw via Dolby. First, I think there may have been a typo there? I’m not aware of a QN55D — at least not in the North American market — and I don’t know of one in the U.K. or Europe either. Did you possibly mean the QN85D or QN95D? Let me know the exact model number. The “55” should go before the QN to signify size, I believe, and the following number is the model or series number. Out-of-stock Hisense Brendan wrote in about the Hisense 75U8N being out of stock at Walmart, and that they’re concerned they may miss out on a big employee deal, and also about the availability of that TV in general since it is highly rated. If you’ve been eyeballing a 75-inch Hisense U8N , my contacts at Hisense let me know that a restock order is due to ship in two to three weeks, which would place the item back in stock at Walmart during the first or second week of December. For a while there, I was wondering if Walmart’s acquisition of Vizio may have led to some Hisense models being edged out strategically, but happily this does not appear to be the case. How many times should you calibrate? Omar writes: Is it better to calibrate a TV twice, once for daytime/bright and once for night/dark? I have never seen anyone mention this before and would like to know. Also, is it common for TVs to have multiple preset “slots” for multiple calibrations? This is a great question. Yes, it is wise to have a TV calibrated for daytime or bright room use and also have a preset for nighttime or dark room use. That way, you can have a fully accurate mode and a mode that is better suited for viewing in the day, when scenes that are displayed at their intended brightness (by the creator anyway) would be too dark to see unless you were in a pitch black room. There’s plenty of content out there like that. And, yes, one of the things we got the TV manufacturers to do is create multiple preset options with labels that make sense for day and night use. But a good TV can have any mode calibrated to perform to your liking — so even the dreaded Vivid mode can be made more accurate, but still bright enough for daytime use. Soundbars in corners Omar writes: Do soundbar systems work in the corner of the room? My TV is wall-mounted, in a corner of the room, with the soundbar hanging underneath. Will Atmos soundbars work in a corner configuration? I’m interested in getting the new Sonos Arc Ultra complete system or the Bravia Quad. Any recommendations on which one I should get? You could go with either the Theatre Quad or the Sonos Arc Ultra system. The Theater Quad might be a little better since it can be placed more flexibly and you’ll still get killer Atmos surround sound. However, the Sonos Arc Ultra could work mounted under the TV. Any drivers shooting out of the sides of the Arc Ultra, though, would struggle to give you some extended width to the sound, as they would not bounce off at the intended angle — that might be hard for the Sonos TruePlay system to overcome. But it would still sound amazing, especially with the surrounds and sub in place. So don’t feel like you should skip it because of that one concern. Both would be great, but if this were my room, I would do Theatre Quad. Noisy 4K Blu-ray blues Max writes that he noticed when watching The Matrix – specifically in scenes like “The Construct” — that the white background is super noisy, even though the 4K Blu-ray version is known to be the product of a high-quality transfer. They noticed it on a Bravia 7 with a Sony UBP-X800M2 Blu-ray player and on a Hisense U8K with a Panasonic Blu-ray player. Is it normal for a movie to have these noise issues? This is something that keeps coming up, and I think that means we need to keep talking about it. The Matrix was shot on 35mm film and used a lot of effects. One of the things that made that movie interesting was its blend of traditional filmmaking and more modern digital special effects. That white background was not digitally manifested. It was an actual white background. That doesn’t necessarily account for it being noisy, though. When doing a transfer to digital, the grain in 35mm film is very difficult to reproduce well — digital scanning must be done very carefully to get a digital representation of it. The real issue, though, is that despite all the advances in TV image processing, digital capture of film grain is hard to perceive as anything but noise to the TV. And even if the TV’s digital noise filters are disabled, the TV still has a hard time knowing what to do with all that “noise.” The white background, even if it was digitally inserted, would need to have had digital film grain added in order for it to work with the rest of the movie — with actual film grain in the source image. The noise is always there. It’s just way, way more obvious with bright and light colors. I think that’s why it seems so severe. It’s just easy to see and, therefore, potentially more distracting. Where’s the Samsung QN90D review? Devon writes: Will there be a full review on the Samsung QN90D besides the one that I see was done for subscribers? The Sony Bravia 7 was my pick until I saw how bad the reflections are, so now I would really like to hear your full thoughts on the Samsung. Thank you for all that you do! First, a little correction. I have not done a review on the QN90D for members. I have shared some behind-the-scenes info, as I have been testing the TV and have talked a little about some specific experiences and some questions that have come up. The full review of the QN90D has now been published. Unfortunately, the review on the 98-inch version might not provide the information you’re looking for. If you think the Bravia 7 may be too reflective, the QN90D will be a better option. If you are getting a 75-inch model or lower, the QN90D will likely make you very, very happy.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies are on scene of an active incident involving a shooting at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Palermo, which is located on Highway 70 at Cox Lane in southern Butte County. The suspected shooter is dead, the sheriff's office said in a social media post. Students are being taken to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene, located at 2238 Monte Vista Avenue, Oroville. Parents are asked to respond to the church to be reunified with their children. No additional information is available at this time.
Jonah Goldberg Among elites across the ideological spectrum, there's one point of unifying agreement: Americans are bitterly divided. What if that's wrong? What if elites are the ones who are bitterly divided while most Americans are fairly unified? History rarely lines up perfectly with the calendar (the "sixties" didn't really start until the decade was almost over). But politically, the 21st century neatly began in 2000, when the election ended in a tie and the color coding of electoral maps became enshrined as a kind of permanent tribal color war of "red vs. blue." Elite understanding of politics has been stuck in this framework ever since. Politicians and voters have leaned into this alleged political reality, making it seem all the more real in the process. I loathe the phrase "perception is reality," but in politics it has the reifying power of self-fulfilling prophecy. Like rival noble families in medieval Europe, elites have been vying for power and dominance on the arrogant assumption that their subjects share their concern for who rules rather than what the rulers can deliver. Political cartoonists from across country draw up something special for the holiday In 2018, the group More in Common published a massive report on the "hidden tribes" of American politics. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." Lacking a narrative might seem like a very postmodern problem, but in a postmodern elite culture, postmodern problems are real problems. It's worth noting that red vs. blue America didn't emerge ex nihilo. The 1990s were a time when the economy and government seemed to be working, at home and abroad. As a result, elites leaned into the narcissism of small differences to gain political and cultural advantage. They remain obsessed with competing, often apocalyptic, narratives. That leaves out most Americans. The gladiatorial combatants of cable news, editorial pages and academia, and their superfan spectators, can afford these fights. Members of the exhausted majority are more interested in mere competence. I think that's the hidden unity elites are missing. This is why we keep throwing incumbent parties out of power: They get elected promising competence but get derailed -- or seduced -- by fan service to, or trolling of, the elites who dominate the national conversation. There's a difference between competence and expertise. One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. This is a particular problem for the left because it is far more invested in credentialism than the right. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. The New York Times' Ezra Klein says he's tired of defending the authority of government institutions. Rather, "I want them to work." One of the reasons progressives find Trump so offensive is his absolute inability to speak the language of expertise -- which is full of coded elite shibboleths. But Trump veritably shouts the language of competence. I don't mean he is actually competent at governing. But he is effectively blunt about calling leaders, experts and elites -- of both parties -- stupid, ineffective, weak and incompetent. He lost in 2020 because voters didn't believe he was actually good at governing. He won in 2024 because the exhausted majority concluded the Biden administration was bad at it. Nostalgia for the low-inflation pre-pandemic economy was enough to convince voters that Trumpian drama is the tolerable price to pay for a good economy. About 3 out of 4 Americans who experienced "severe hardship" because of inflation voted for Trump. The genius of Trump's most effective ad -- "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" -- was that it was simultaneously culture-war red meat and an argument that Harris was more concerned about boutique elite concerns than everyday ones. If Trump can actually deliver competent government, he could make the Republican Party the majority party for a generation. For myriad reasons, that's an if so big it's visible from space. Given everything that had occurred in the previous hour or two, it made bizarrely perfect sense that Sione Tuipulotu’s grandmother would hand him the Hopetoun Cup trophy after beating the Wallabies at Murrayfield. “She whispered in my ear and said, ‘we got them’,” Tuipulotu said post-game. And it all came after a memorable afternoon at Murrayfield where Tuipulotu – and his 77-year-old grandmother – were in the middle of absolutely everything, much to the delight of an adoring Scottish crowd. But first to re-cap. Born and raised in Melbourne, Tuipulotu played for the Junior Wallabies but couldn’t crack a regular spot for the Rebels in Super Rugby, and so he moved to Scotland to play. The son of a Tongan-Australia father and a mother with Italian-Scottish heritage, Tuipulotu qualified as eligible for Scotland due to his maternal grandmother Jaqueline Thomson, who was born in Greenock in the Scottish lowlands but emigrated to Australia as a child and settled in Frankston. The nuggety centre debuted for Scotland in 2021 and quickly became a fan favourite, and Thomson became something of a cult hero, too, often getting thanked on Scottish rugby social media after a big game by Tuipulotu. The 27-year-old was made captain ahead of the November internationals, and last week, Thomson was flown to Scotland by a sponsor, for the first time in decades, as a surprise for Tuipulotu and his brother Mosese, who both play rugby in Scotland and are close to their gran. Tuipulotu hadn’t seen her in years and after the reunion video did the rounds in Scotland, Thomson was given a rousing cheer when the video – and Thomson – were shown again on the Murrayfield screen on Sunday just before kickoff. When her grandson later scored a try and pointed to her in the stand, the camera found the overwhelmed grandmother; this time shaking her head. “It was super special,” Tuipulotu said. “I don’t really score many tries, to be honest. MILAN (Reuters) - AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca was pleased with his side's serious approach in their 6-1 last-16 Coppa Italia win over Sassuolo at the San Siro on Tuesday. Milan raced into a four-goal lead by halftime to end any hopes of an upset by the Serie B leaders, and allowed the manager to send on four substitutes at the start of the second half. "We played a great game, magnificent first half, which also helped us manage the players," Fonseca told Italian broadcaster Mediaset. "Nothing to say, we played a very serious game. The attitude of the players was very serious and I am satisfied." Fonseca made eight changes from the team which beat Empoli 3-0 at the weekend, and the manager was happy with how the players who came in responded. "I have always said to have faith in all the players, that's why they all play," Fonseca said. "Today I'm very pleased because we had players who had played less and who played a magnificent game. They told me that they are ready to play all the time. That's what I want to hear." Fonseca was also pleased with his players' performance in a game they were expected to win. "In the past, I think it was a problem. The attitude towards the big teams has always been perfect," Fonseca said. "But the attitude towards the other teams has always been lacking. That's what we've had today." Fonseca could face his former team AS Roma in the quarter-finals, if they get past Sampdoria, but for now the Milan manager is focussed on their next league game on Friday. "I didn't think about that," Fonseca said. "Now I'm going home and I'm thinking about the game against Atalanta."
