Chrome is one of those browsers that is synonymous with the Google brand identity, which means you see its footprint everywhere across the company's products. If history has taught us anything, it's that such close association on a Big Tech platform only means bad news for the competition , and the average user, by that extension. The U.S. Department of Justice wants Google to break Chrome into a separate business because of competition concerns and how it was helping create a monopoly in the search and advertising business. The latest legal tussle involving Google has experts scurrying to find similarities with the landmark Microsoft antitrust case over two decades ago. The lengthy United States vs. Microsoft antitrust battle, which had Internet Explorer at the center of it , is a close example. However, the internet has matured dramatically since the heyday of Internet Explorer, as browsers are no longer just about visiting the web. They are the center point of a deeper web that binds together user activity tracking and targeted advertising. It is, therefore, no wonder that Chrome could go for as much as $20 billion if Google is forced to sell the browser business. Now, a final ruling is only expected to arrive in the latter half of 2025, but August 2024 has already made it clear that Google is viewed as a monopoly in the online search and advertising market. So, even if a sale doesn't materialize, we can expect some big changes in how Google moves ahead with Chrome and the ecosystem built around it. Chrome's value is worth billions of dollars on its own, and on top of that, it offers unhindered access to Google's search engine. Spending to the tune of an estimated $20 billion for Chrome — which is arguably the most advanced browser out there on both mobile and desktop platforms — would mean the buyer could theoretically look for a fast way to reap a return on their fat investment. There are only a few ways to do that at scale. The first one is to put a premium on accessing Chrome, which would dramatically diminish its appeal as Google has offered it free so far. Another option is to somehow monetize it, a web that inevitably entangles Chrome once again with Google Search, the biggest search engine out there by an overwhelming majority. In the hands of another company, Chrome's convenient access to Google Search or its ad network could either get technically hobbled or pushed behind a premium. In either case, there are going to be overhead costs, and recovering that won't be easy for any company spending billions of dollars to buy Chrome. So, we're back to square one. Finally, there's the challenge of technical development. Google is in a uniquely advantageous position to keep innovating Chrome. A buyer likely won't play by the same rules. "Few companies would have the ability or incentive to keep them open source, or to invest in them at the same level we do," notes Lee-Anne Mulholland, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Google. Selling off Chrome would pose an existential threat. Curiously, it once again harkens back to the "browser wars" era, when Microsoft launched Internet Explorer as a free tool, crushing Netscape and forcing the monumental open-source release of the latter's code. From the ashes rose Mozilla, which eventually spawned the Firefox browser as we know it today. Notably, the very survival of Firefox depends on the money it gets from Google, despite being a Chrome competitor. That's because Google reportedly pays Mozilla to the tune of half a billion dollars each year to keep Google Search as the default search engine. A team of researchers highlighted the same conundrum in a research paper discussing the unique antitrust paradox of Chrome. "The precedent set by Mozilla's financial dependence on Google highlights potential challenges for Chrome in maintaining its operations without similar support," says the research paper . The paper also makes a case for the reverse scenario, arguing that Chrome definitely offers enough incentive for Google to keep investing billions of dollars into its development, which means a buyer(s) would likely pour money to extract the benefits. But the buyer has to be a deep-pocket entity, preferably from the Big Tech pool. However, such an exchange of hands would again raise antitrust alarms. Google, on the other hand, already has an eponymous app that offers browsing perks. It won't take the company too much time to make it the next avenue for accessing its search engine and other services. Whoever ends up snagging Chrome, the biggest challenge would be to keep it competitive in terms of convenience as well as functionality. Right now, Chrome acts as a direct window to not just Google Search but also to other Google services ranging from the Gemini chatbot and the AI-fied search answers to Gmail, Map, and the entire Workspace suite. Decoupling the Google productivity suite from Chrome and its seamless interplay could deter buyers. All these services come as a default to users, and consumer psychology tends to stick with the defaults unless there is a strong incentive to look elsewhere. The court's ruling in the antitrust case has a whole section dedicated to "The Power of Defaults," citing a massive proportion of search queries originating from default access points, such as Chrome and Android OS . Even if Google is forced to sell Chrome, the open-source Chromium project that underpins it — and a host of other browsers such as Microsoft's Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi — would still rely on Google's development work. "If they're really just saying, 'Give up Chrome,' that would be very weird because Google would still control all the underlying technology and they could just tank anyone who would try to do stuff with it, including anyone who ends up owning Chrome," notes Christo Wilson, a professor of computer science at Northeastern University. Then there's the question of making money from the hefty Chrome investment. A focus on returns would also mean lower margins for development and functional downgrades for users, at least in the short term. Assuming the DOJ's push for spinning Chrome out of Google's conglomerate is successful, the biggest beneficiary (or loser) would be Google Search. Some of the testimonies in the antitrust offer a clear look at how the company built a wall around Google Search and what the outcome could be. "When the court asked why Google pays billions in revenue share when it already has the best search engine, he answered that the payments "provide an incredibly strong incentive for the ecosystem to not do anything"; they "effectively make the ecosystem exceptionally resist[ant] to change"; and their "net effect . [is to] basically freeze the ecosystem in place[.]" wrote U.S. judge Amit Mehta, citing a testimony provided by Dr. Sridhar Ramaswamy, a Google Search veteran and former Senior Vice President of Ads and Commerce at Google. To fix the problematic conduct, the DOJ has requested that Google start sharing ad data at no cost with competitors and do something similar for user data as well as access to the Search Index, including data listed on Google-owned platforms such as YouTube. The remedy seeks to share the data with "suitable security and privacy safeguards" in tow. Google argues that doing so would open the doors for "major privacy and security risks," citing how AOL unintentionally exposed the search data of over half a million users. Targeted harassment, doxxing, surveillance, aggressive ad targeting by third parties, and profiling are just some of the possible outcomes if the search and ad data fall into the wrong hands.

(AP) — New Jersey gambling regulators have handed out $40,000 in fines to two sportsbooks and a tech company for violations that included taking bets on unauthorized events, and on games that had already ended. In information made public Monday, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement fined DraftKings $20,000. It also levied $10,000 fines on Rush Street Interactive NJ and the sports betting technology company Kambi. According to documents released by the state, Rush Street accepted 16 bets worth $1,523 in Nov. 2021 on a college basketball game between the University of North Carolina-Asheville and Tennessee Tech University after the game had already concluded with a UNC victory. Kambi told the enforcement division that a trader had failed to manually remove that game from its betting markets, saying it had stopped receiving messages from its own sports data provider due to a network connectivity error. Kambi said it has updated its guidelines and retrained its traders to prevent a recurrence. Kambi, which is based in Malta, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Monday. Rush Street declined comment, and DraftKings had no immediate comment Monday. DraftKings stopped using Kambi in 2021. In March 2022 Rush Street took seven bets totaling just under $2,900 on three Magic City Jai Alai games after the results were already known. Kambi told the division it experienced a connectivity issue that allowed the bets to be accepted after the games were over. An explanation of what Kambi did to address the situation was blacked out in documents released by the division. A month earlier Rush Street took 13 wagers worth $8,150 with pre-match odds on a Professional Golf Association match after the event had already begun. In this case, Kambi told the division a newly hired trader failed to enter the correct closing time time for bets on the event. The trader and a supervisor underwent retraining. DraftKings was fined for taking bets on unapproved events including Russian basketball for nine months in 2020 and 2021. It eventually voided over $61,000 in bets and returned the money to customers after being directed to do so by the state. In this case, Kambi told the division it misidentified this particular Russian basketball league as one that was approved for wagering in New Jersey. DraftKings told the state it did not catch the error, either. In 2020, DraftKings accepted 484 wagers on unapproved table tennis matches. Kambi incorrectly enabled the events for wagering without conditions required by the state, the division said. In Feb. 2022, the division said DraftKings took pre-season NFL bets involving specific players but did not give the state specific information on what information was to be included in the bets, drawing 182 wagers worth nearly $7,000 that were later voided and refunded to customers. Mr Singh said "10 Kuki terrorists" tried to enter a relief camp in Jiribam's Borobekra where 115 internally displaced people were living, but the CRPF foiled their plan. All the 10 were shot dead in a gunfight with the central forces on November 11 in Borobekra, a village on the interstate border with Assam. One CRPF soldier was injured. "If the CRPF was not deployed, the lives of many civilians would have been lost. The Kuki terrorists came with rocket launchers, AK 47, and many sophisticated weapons. They attacked the (police) camp , and killed two people on the spot," Mr Singh told NDTV. "They were trying to enter Borobekra relief camp where 115 Meitei civilians were living. But due to the timely intervention by the CRPF, the lives were saved. Otherwise that scenario could have been different. It's very unfortunate that eight innocent people were killed. The two died in the attack, and six including three small children were kidnapped and mercilessly killed. It is an intolerable crime," the Chief Minister said. Civil society groups and leaders of the Kuki tribes have claimed the 10 men were "village volunteers". The police have, however, called them "militants" and showed assault rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher as recovered from them. A bullet-ridden vehicle of the security forces was shown as one of the targets of the "militants". At least two dozen suspected Kuki militants had split into two groups before launching the attack in Borobekra, police sources had told NDTV. While one group took six Meitei hostages, the other group of 10 men vandalised and set fire to houses, and killed two senior citizens from the Meitei community. These 10 were later shot dead in the encounter with the CRPF, police sources have said. The six hostages were from the same family - a woman, her infant child, her two-year-old son, her mother, her sister and her sister's daughter - all were killed in captivity by suspected Kuki militants. Their bodies were dumped into a river . Days before the Borobekra attack, a mother of three from the Hmar tribe was allegedly raped and killed by suspected Meitei militants during a night attack on a village in Jiribam. Mr Singh said the Manipur cabinet's resolution was placed "after a lot of thought", adding the Centre sent more forces to catch the "militants". "You can't deal with Kuki militants without the forces. The operations have already started . This was the demand," he added. The Manipur cabinet has sought to declare the militants involved in the Jiribam terror attack of taking hostages and killing them as an unlawful organisation, or a terror group. He expressed confidence that the Centre would look into the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, by keeping in mind the "pulse of the people of Manipur" and will surely do something about it. The AFSPA, which gives sweeping powers to the security forces to operate in "disturbed areas" without fear of court proceedings, was reimposed in six police station areas of Manipur's valley region. Protests had also broken out in the valley areas when the partially decomposed bodies of the six hostages were found. The Chief Minister told NDTV that vandalism that happened during the protests was carried out by vested interests and rivals. "The people came out to protest in shock after hearing about the killings of the six innocent women and children. They were simply rallying and appealing to the government and MLAs, not involved in the violence. The arsonists stole many things from the houses they targeted. It was not the public. They were peacefully protesting, rallying. The troublemakers were the defeated group, politically desperate group, politically motivated gang, who looted and attacked homes. No one from the public attacked the MLAs' houses. The public was in the bazaar, protesting," Mr Singh said in the state capital Imphal. The Chief Minister said that in one MLA's house, some 600 people came and spoke to him, and after agreeing to their demands of bringing justice in the Jiribam terror attack case, the group of people left. "Another group of 200 or so people came. These were the ones who created trouble. We have identified them. There is video evidence. Most wore masks, but we know them. They have stolen gold, cash, even eight paddy bags from an MLA's house. What's all this?" Mr Singh said. On the much controversial War on Drugs campaign, the Chief Minister said at least 500 acres of poppy cultivation has been detected in Kangpokpi district, which sprang up fast as the security forces are tied up with other priority tasks. "Due to the present crisis, security has been tied up in some areas and cannot go out. Taking advantage of this, six villages in Kangpokpi are cultivating a huge amount of illegal poppy. Earlier, the forces used to go in the morning and evening to destroy illegal poppy cultivation. At least 500 acres are being cultivated," Mr Singh told NDTV. "We have asked the Chief Secretary to send forces to destroy the poppy farms in Kangpokpi before they can be harvested. They want to destroy the youth of Manipur by making them addicted to drugs, they want to harm India. They are using many strategies to invade India," he said. The Kuki tribes have often criticised Mr Singh for allegedly singling out the community and branding them as a people who encourage drug trafficking, even though many members of other communities have been arrested in narcotics cases. To bring peace in Manipur, Mr Singh said, the Centre had called both sides and started talks. "From the state government's side, we sent MLAs, leaders to Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi for talks. Political dialogue, negotiations, interactions, these are the things that will help bring peace," he said. He faulted the media for allegedly not reporting the whole picture from Manipur, where he said trouble is confined to two-three districts, and not the entire state where people from different communities are living together in peace. "Differences between communities have been there for a long time. After my government came, I launched the go-to-hills campaign, go-to-village, meet with people from different communities, bring them together, we honoured every community, and constructed a museum of everyone's culture and traditions," the Chief Minister said. "The Sangai ethnic park has the model of houses of every tribe to show oneness... we are all proud Indians, we are all proud Manipuris, and almost succeeded except for the present scenario with this one community. But other communities are living together. Go to Imphal and see. There are churches, temples, masjids. Trouble is happening only in one-two districts, not the whole Manipur. The national media needs to be aware of all this," he said. When violence broke out in May 2023, temples were razed and set on fire in many hill areas, while churches in the valley areas also suffered the same fate. To a question about the National People's Party (NPP) withdrawing support to his government, Mr Singh told NDTV he is not worried. "The Congress has only five leaders. They won only five seats after 15 years... There's nothing to worry about. Whether the NPP withdraws or not, there is enough of a majority. Those who want to give an excuse at a time when the state is going through hardships, let them be. For example, if a lifeguard runs away when an incident is about to happen, let him run away. I am here to save everyone," he said. There are many villages of the Kuki tribes in the hills surrounding the Meitei-dominated valley. The clashes between the Meitei community and the nearly two dozen tribes known as Kukis - a term given by the British in colonial times - who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, has killed over 220 people and internally displaced nearly 50,000. I started playing football since I was young at Viable Stars Academy...that was my humble beginning to mold me into a better player. I later moved to play for Nigeria AIRFORCE football club in the country’s second-tier league. How was your upbringing? It was strict because I have disciplined parents, they are educated and smart. They made sure we studied well and worshipped God. My family is loving and supportive, I thank God for it. Were your parents supportive when you started playing football? It wasn’t easy to convince my father that I want to play football but, when he saw my passion and determination, he had no option but to support me. How did your move to Rwanda unfold? I was playing in my home country Nigeria and a friend of mine introduced me to someone who brought me to Sunrise FC because he believed I would fit into their system. How was your time at Sunrise FC? Sunrise is a good team with wonderful people. I enjoyed every bit of my stay there. I come from the Eastern region of Nigeria, so seeing myself at Sunrise, also in Eastern Rwanda, was like I was at home. The atmosphere is almost the same and so is the culture. It was just unfortunate that Sunrise FC couldn’t stay in the first division; I learnt a lot in the league while at the club and it has helped me to keep me going. You have been among the best defenders in the league this season since moving to AS Kigali. What would you say is the secret? I’m honored that my talent is being recognized. The only secret to success is God, hard work and discipline. You only have to believe in what you can achieve. EL SEGUNDO — Running back J.K. Dobbins suffered a sprained knee during the Chargers’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night and is likely to be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday he “didn’t really know how to categorize” the injury, however. “He’s working through something with his knee,” Harbaugh added. The NFL Network, citing an unnamed source, said Dobbins would be out this week. Dobbins gained 40 yards on six carries before he was sidelined in the second quarter of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss on Monday. The Chargers turned to Gus Edwards and Hassan Haskins in Dobbins’ absence in the second half, but relied almost exclusively on their passing game after trailing 14-13 at halftime. The Chargers (7-4) rushed only five times in the second half. Overall, Edwards had nine carries for 11 yards and one touchdown and Haskins had one carry for 3 yards. Quarterback Justin Herbert rushed four times for 29 yards and one touchdown, a 5-yard scramble on the Chargers’ first drive of the game. Edwards’ 1-yard touchdown run came on their final possession. “Gus is heating up,” Harbaugh said. “Great to have him back in there.” Edwards has rushed for 206 yards and one touchdown on 63 carries in seven games, spending four games on injured reserve because of an ankle injury. Harbaugh was uncertain whether Dobbins’ injury would force him onto the injured reserve list and a minimum of a four-game layoff. “Don’t know that yet,” Harbaugh said of the possibility of Dobbins going on IR. Haskins has rushed for 26 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries, primarily playing an impactful role on special teams. Rookie Kimani Vidal, another possible replacement for Dobbins, has rushed for 44 yards on 18 carries and caught three passes for 49 yards and one touchdown. Dobbins has rushed for a team-leading 766 yards (fourth in the AFC) and eight touchdowns on 156 carries. He and Edwards signed with the Chargers in the offseason as free agents after starting their careers with the Ravens. Dobbins, 25, has had an injury-plagued career, but hasn’t missed a game so far this season. His 2023 season ended early after he sustained a torn Achilles tendon in the Ravens’ season opener. Herbert is the Chargers’ second-leading rusher with 211 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries, most coming on scrambles away from on-rushing defenders. He set a career-high with a 38-yard scramble in the first quarter of the Chargers’ 26-8 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 27. SAMUEL (NON) UPDATE Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. hasn’t played since the Chargers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, placed on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. Harbaugh declined to speculate whether Samuel would be sidelined for the remainder of the season, referring questions to Samuel. Samuel isn’t required to speak to reporters while on IR. So, his extended absence has been something of a mystery. However, his absence has opened the door for rookies Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still to move into the starting lineup. Hart is sidelined by an ankle injury that required him to wear a protective boot while watching Monday’s game from the sideline. Still has been a reliable fill-in with 33 tackles and one interception. “No, I don’t expect him back this week,” Harbaugh said of Samuel. In somewhat related moves, the Chargers placed cornerback Eli Apple on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury suffered against the Ravens. They also claimed safety Marcus Maye off of waivers. Maye played 11 games this season with the Miami Dolphins, who cut him earlier this week. Maye started three games and had 30 tackles overall for the Dolphins. CHARK’S STATUS Wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. started the season on injured reserve, but he hasn’t cracked the lineup consistently after recovering from a hip injury. Chark was active for only one game this season, the Chargers’ Nov. 10 victory over the Tennessee Titans , and he was on the field for only one snap. “The opportunity is there, the opportunity is there,” Harbaugh said of Chark, a seven-year NFL veteran. “I really like what I see. Every week, there’s an opportunity. Opportunities are guaranteed, and DJ has the license and opportunity to take advantage of that opportunity.”
