Daniel Chapo, of the ruling Frelimo party, won the 9 October presidential election with 65.2% of the vote, Lúcia Ribeiro, the chair of Mozambique’s constitutional council, told a press conference on Monday. The figure was lower than that previously announced by the election commission, which said Chapo had won 70.7%, but still more than the 50% needed to win. Meanwhile, the second-place opposition candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, who has captured the imagination of young urban voters, got 24.2%, up from 20.3%, but nowhere near the majority he has claimed. The report of the council, whose members are mostly appointed by Frelimo politicians, said there had been “discrepancies” at the district level during the vote counting, without specifying what caused them. It also said that the Podemos party, which supports Mondlane, had submitted “inflated” figures in their challenge to the results. Mozambique has been roiled by weeks of protests , with security forces killing at least 130 people, according to Human Rights Watch. International election observers have said there was evidence of ballot rigging, but some cautioned that Mondlane may still not have won a free and fair election. The protests have repeatedly brought Mozambique’s economy to a standstill. Its north has also been battered by Cyclone Chido , which made landfall in the south-east African country on 15 December, killing 120 people and destroying an estimated 110,000 homes. Before the ruling on Monday afternoon, Mondlane told his supporters to stay at home until Friday, as part of the anti-election protests, whose latest stage he has called “Turbo V8”. He also said they should not commit any violence. However, in a separate video on Facebook, he said: “If we get the electoral truth [from Ribero], we will have peace. If we get electoral lies, we will push the country over a precipice into chaos, into disorder.” After the ruling, Mozambican TV stations broadcast footage of tyres being burned in streets that were otherwise empty apart from armed state security officers. Sign up to The Long Wave Nesrine Malik and Jason Okundaye deliver your weekly dose of Black life and culture from around the world after newsletter promotion Chapo, who is due to take office on 15 January, told a crowd of cheering Frelimo supporters that he would lead an electoral reform process. “Dialogue is the only way to build social harmony,” he said, without elaborating. While it was expected that the constitutional council would validate Chapo’s victory with some changes, Mondlane inciting protests rather than bargaining with Frelimo was uncharted territory for Mozambique, said Alex Vines, head of the African programme at the thinktank Chatham House. “Historically it’s been a weak state with a stronger party,” said Vines, who was part of a Commonwealth election observer team that monitored the vote. “Now you’re finding both a weak state and a weakening party, being challenged by a new politics ... led by a charismatic populist leader who has tapped into the anger of disenfranchised, frustrated youth.”

NoneThe Christian’S Approach To Morality And The 2024 Election – Drew Alan HallThe New England Patriots are set to take on the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida for their second meeting of the year. However, New England will once again be without offensive lineman Cole Strange, who returned to practice this week after suffering a torn patellar tendon late in 2023. If the Patriots wanted to have him back for the contest, they would've had to activate him from the PUP list by Saturday. Coaches mentioned this week that Strange is still doing invidiual drills at this point, as he works his way back into playing condition. The offensive lineman himself recently stated that he had to teach himself how to walk again after the injury. New England has two more weeks remaining in his 21-day practice window to activate him, or they'll lose him for the season. Given the severity of the injury, they'll likely be pretty cautious with him. When he does finally return, it sounds like the Patriots may consider him replacing Ben Brown as the team's starting center , although he'll be working at both guard (his normal position) and center at practice in the meantime. Against the spread: Eagles 6-4; Rams 4-6. Series record: Eagles lead 23-20-1. Last meeting: Eagles beat Rams 23-14 in Inglewood, Calif. on Oct. 8, 2023. Last week: Eagles beat Washington 26-18; Rams beat New England 28-22. Eagles offense: overall (5), rush (1), pass (22), scoring (7). Eagles defense: overall (1), rush (7), pass (2), scoring (6). Rams offense: overall (17), rush (26), pass (T-7), scoring (21). Rams defense: overall (23), rush (18), pass (22), scoring (22). Turnover differential: Eagles plus-2; Rams plus-4. RB Saquon Barkley. Barkley combined for 198 scrimmage yards and two scores, rushing 26 times for 146 yards (5.6 average) while adding two receptions for 52 yards against Washington. With 1,137 rushing yards through 10 games, Barkley only trails Baltimore’s Derrick Henry for the NFL lead. He had his sixth 100-plus yard rushing game this season, which is the most in the NFL. S Kam Kinchens. The rookie third-round pick from Miami had eight tackles, one tackle for loss, an interception and a forced fumble against the Patriots as he continues to come on strong. Kinchens has three picks in the past three games. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts vs. Rams’ defensive line. Hurts shredded Los Angeles for 303 yards passing and 72 yards rushing last season despite the presence of superstar DT Aaron Donald. After Donald retired, the Rams turned to a committee approach to get after the passer, and it has worked with rookie OLB Jared Verse and DT Braden Fiske fitting in well next to second-year OLB Byron Young and DT Kobie Turner. But they can only unleash their excellent pass rush skills by limiting Philadelphia on early downs. Hurts has been at his dual-threat best over the past five games, accounting for 15 total touchdowns (six passing, nine rushing) against two turnovers. Eagles defensive end Bryce Huff had surgery on his left wrist on Thursday, a move that could allow him to return toward the end of the season. ... WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and DT Milton Williams (foot) each missed practice this week. ... Rams RT Rob Havenstein (ankle) looks to be trending toward a return this week. Havenstein sat out the previous two games because of the ailment. The Eagles have won all three games in Los Angeles since the Rams moved back in 2016. ... Overall, Philadelphia has won seven of the past eight. The only setback came in Week 2 of the 2020 pandemic season. Barkley has passed 100-plus scrimmage yards in eight of 10 games. That is tied with LeSean McCoy (2011) and Brian Westbrook (2007) for the most by an Eagle through 10 games. His 198 yards were his second most as an Eagle (199 in Week 9). ... The Eagles have allowed two passing touchdowns during their winning streak. Only one opponent has topped 200 passing yards against them in this stretch, with Cincinnati throwing for 222 in Week 8. ... Hurts leads all NFL quarterbacks with 11 touchdown runs and is second only to Henry's 13 scores for the Ravens. ... WR A.J. Brown leads the league in receptions of 30 yards or longer. He is averaging 18.7 yards per catch, the best mark of any player with at least 30 grabs. ... Even before he hurt his wrist, Huff struggled in his first season in Philadelphia with just 2 1/2 sacks and four quarterback hits. His snap count has dipped since he was injured ahead of a game earlier this month against Jacksonville. Huff had 17 1/2 sacks in four seasons with the Jets before he signed a three-year, $51 million free-agent deal with the Eagles. ... Philadelphia has run for at least 150 yards and two touchdowns in five straight games, something it hadn't accomplished since 1949. ... Rams WR Puka Nacua caught his first touchdown of the season in New England. He has at least seven receptions and 98 yards in three of his past four games, with only a second-quarter ejection in Seattle having limited Nacua since he returned from a knee injury. ... WR Cooper Kupp has 614 receptions through his first 98 games, which is fourth most in NFL history through 100 games. Julio Jones (619) is third. ... RB Kyren Williams averaged a season-high 5.7 yards per carry, finishing with 86 yards on 15 attempts versus the Patriots. ... Verse has 11 tackles for loss and 4 1/2 sacks through his first 10 games. Verse is pressuring the quarterback on 20.2% of pass rush snaps, which ranks second in the league overall. ... The Rams were 2 of 8 (25%) on third down against New England, their third straight game converting 25% or worse. ... QB Matthew Stafford has not been sacked in each of Los Angeles’ past three wins. Don’t be discouraged using Stafford, Kupp and Nacua against Philadelphia's pass defense. All three put up solid fantasy numbers in last season’s meeting, even as the Eagles sat on the ball for nearly 38 minutes. Stafford had 222 yards and two scores, finding Kupp eight times for 118 yards and Nacua seven times for 71 yards and a touchdown, so they'll find ways to produce. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

Nagpur: In a dramatic leap toward ensuring online safety, city's cybercrime cops have stepped up as digital guardians, addressing 759 cases of harmful content targeting women and children. Their decisive actions underscore a heightened commitment to safeguarding vulnerable groups in the ever-evolving digital landscape. The cases involved instances of harassment, exploitation, and abusive content on platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, Google, and X (formerly Twitter). Acting swiftly, the cybercrime team ensured the immediate removal of objectionable posts, preventing further harm and bolstering trust in the online sphere. Authorities emphasised the importance of public awareness and collaboration with social media platforms to tackle these challenges effectively. Reporting mechanisms, such as the NCCRP portal, have played a pivotal role in expediting the resolution of such cases. Public participation, through vigilant reporting of harmful activities, has further empowered law enforcement to address the issues promptly. DCP Zone 1, Lohit Matani, said, "When we receive complaints of harassment or bullying targeting women and children, the first step is to report the content, followed by the Ministry of Information Technology filing a complaint to remove it nationwide. In more serious cases, we apprehend the suspects." He further explained, "These incidents typically involve individuals with anonymous social media profiles, making it more difficult for us to trace and capture them." Senior officials, including Additional CP Sanjay Patil, cyber deputy commissioner Lohit Matani, and Additional CP Lata Patil commended the efforts of the cybercrime team. Amit Dolas, senior police inspector, and Amol Deshmukh, police inspector, led their team in utilising advanced technical expertise to execute this mission with precision. Their coordinated efforts, combined with the guidance of senior leadership, have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter died Sunday, confirmed by his family to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Washington Pos t. He was 100 years old. Born James Earl Carter, Jr., in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924, the Democrat pursued state politics before he was elected to one term in the White House, where he served as the 39th president between 1977 and 1981. Carter's mother was a nurse, and his father was a businessman and farmer who grew peanuts, cotton, sugar and corn. The National Park Service currently oversees the Carter family farm as part of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, which is open to visitors. Carter attended public school in his hometown before enrolling in Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He ultimately graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for seven years. Once his time at the academy was completed, Carter married Rosalynn Smith, who later became the first lady during Carter's time in office. The couple had three sons and one daughter and would be married for 77 years, the longest marriage in presidential history. Carter first decided to pursue a career in politics in the early 1960s, when he was elected to the Georgia Senate . He launched his first gubernatorial campaign ahead of the 1966 election and lost, but went on to win his second bid for governor four years later, becoming the state's 76th elected leader and serving from January 1971 through January 1975. After a brief time overseeing the Democratic National Committee , Carter announced his intention to run for president in late 1974. He defeated incumbent Republican Gerald Ford with 297 electoral votes to Ford's 240, with former Minnesota Senator Walter Mondale joining the new Democratic administration as Carter's vice president. Mondale died in 2021 at 93. In a statement Carter released at the time, he remembered Mondale as "the best vice president in our country's history" and a "dear friend." While president, Carter was credited with encouraging a peace agreement in the Middle East that ultimately resulted in the Camp David Accords, which the Office of the Historian at the U.S. Department of State described as "historic." The White House archives lists the Panama Canal treaties and an agreement between the U.S. and the Soviet Union restricting nuclear weapon production as some of Carter's biggest victories overseas. In the U.S., Carter pursued deregulation in a handful of industries, including energy and transportation, and pushed for new environmental protections. The U.S. Department of Education also launched during his time in office. Carter's presidency is often remembered by the Iran hostage crisis and struggles at home as the U.S. faced an economic downturn. A White House Historical Association overview of Carter's administration credited the hostage crisis—which continued for more than a year and didn't end until Carter's final day as president—with impacting the Democrat's unsuccessful bid for re-election. Carter lost the 1980 election with 41 percent of the popular vote and just 49 electoral college votes. He was succeeded by Republican Ronald Reagan. Shortly after leaving the White House, Carter established The Carter Center in Atlanta with his wife and in collaboration with Emory University. The former first lady was Carter's "full partner" in their efforts at the nonprofit and was continuing her work by chairing its Mental Health Task Force as of January, according to her co-founder page on the organization's website. The Carter Center was created "on a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering" and describes its continuing mission as seeking "to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health." In 2002, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Carter was its choice for the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." At the time of the announcement, the committee recognized Carter's work on the Camp David Accords while he was president, as well as his efforts in protecting democratic elections overseas and defending human rights through the Carter Center. More recently, Carter continued voicing his positions on voting rights in his own country as a slew of states weighed the implementation of new election-related restrictions. In March 2021, Carter criticized his home state's legislature for pursuing election-related legislation that he said seemed "to be rooted in partisan interests, not in the interests of all Georgia voters." "As our state legislators seek to turn back the clock through legislation that will restrict access to voting for many Georgians, I am disheartened, saddened, and angry," Carter said at the time. Two months later, the Carters were visited at their home in Georgia by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden . Carter had previously congratulated Biden on his win in the 2020 election through a statement in which he and Rosalynn said they both "look forward to seeing the positive change they bring to our nation." In the years before his death, and following a series of hospital stays, Carter began hospice care at home, opting to spend his remaining time surrounded by family. Rosalynn, who was also in hospice care at their Georgia home following a diagnosis of dementia, died in November 2023. Carter is survived by his four children, Jack, James, Donnel and Amy, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This is a developing news story and will be updated with more information.NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks tiptoed to more records amid a mixed Tuesday of trading, tacking a touch more onto what’s already been a stellar year so far. French President Emmanuel Macron’s office has announced a new government, after the previous Cabinet collapsed in a historic vote prompted by fighting over the country’s budget. Newly named Prime Minister Francois Bayrou put together the government that includes members of the outgoing conservative-dominated team and some new figures from centrist or left-leaning backgrounds. Coming up with a 2025 budget will be the most urgent order of business. The new government enters office after months of political deadlock and pressure from financial markets to reduce France’s colossal debt. Mr Macron has vowed to remain in office until his term ends in 2027, but has struggled to govern since snap elections in the summer left no single party with a majority in the National Assembly. Since his appointment 10 days ago, Mr Bayrou has held talks with political leaders from various parties in search of the right balance for the new government. Some critics were angry at Mr Bayrou for consulting with Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, and some argue the government looks too much like the old one to win the trust of politicians. Former prime minister Michel Barnier resigned this month following a no-confidence vote prompted by budget disputes in the National Assembly, leaving France without a functioning government. Ms Le Pen played a key role in Mr Barnier’s downfall by joining her National Rally party’s forces with the left to pass the no-confidence motion. Mr Bayrou will need support from moderate legislators on the right and left to keep his government alive. Banker Eric Lombard will be finance minister, a crucial post when France is working to fulfil its promises to European Union partners to reduce its deficit, estimated to reach 6% of its gross domestic product this year. Mr Lombard briefly worked as an adviser to a socialist finance minister in the 1990s. Mr Bayrou has said he supports tax hikes championed by his predecessor, but it is not clear how the new government can find the right calculation for a budget that satisfies a majority of politicians angry over spending cuts. Bruno Retailleau stays on as interior minister, with responsibility for France’s security and migration policy. Sebastien Lecornu, who has been at the forefront of France’s military support for Ukraine, remains defence minister, while foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who has travelled extensively in the Middle East in recent weeks, also retains his post. Among the new faces are two former prime ministers. Manuel Valls will be minister for overseas affairs, and Elisabeth Borne takes the education ministry.
