This season the Canucks haven’t been as fortunate. Not having the services of all-star goaltender Thatcher Demko since the start of the season due to a knee injury was the first issue that the hockey club had to deal with. Dakota Joshua also missed the first 14 games recovering from off-season cancer surgery. Brock Boeser suffered what appeared to be a concussion on Nov. 7 and missed seven games but was set to return to the lineup in Boston against the Bruins on Tuesday night. Then there’s J.T. Then there is Boeser, who had been out of the lineup for almost three weeks after taking a headshot from Tanner Jeannot in a game against the Kings in early November. Hopefully, there won’t be any lingering symptoms from that injury and Boeser can regain the pace that saw him score 40 goals last year and which he was duplicating this season with six goals in 12 games. As for Miller, when he does return, what player will the Canucks be getting? His play had dipped to the point where he was benched for the last 14:40 of the third period in his final game versus Nashville on Nov. 17. Miller’s production had waned with only six goals and ten assists in 17 games – well off the levels from a year ago when he tallied 37 goals and 66 assists. Then there are other issues that are of concern as well. The second defensive pair of Tyler Myers and Carson Soucy has struggled this season to the point where the organization is checking in with other teams as they look to get help for their blue line corps. What has compounded the problem is that Tocchet has emphasized since training camp that he wants his defencemen to be more involved in the offense and generating more chances. That doesn’t exactly fit into the skill set of either Myers or Soucy so it’s been noted that the Canucks are talking to other teams with Pittsburgh’s Marcus Pettersson being a player of interest. Although Pettersson is a solid defender, he’s not exactly the answer to the Canucks problems when it comes to offence from the back-end. While we are on the topic of Petterssons, the enigma known as Elias Pettersson will need to regain the form that saw him be a dynamic play-driver who scored 30-plus goals the last three seasons. Tocchet and the organization wanted to see more of an investment from Pettersson and the Swede has shown signs of improvement with four goals and six assists in his last seven games. There are other positive signs as well. Quinn Hughes continues to play at a Norris Trophy-calibre level while Kevin Lankinen has provided consistent goaltending during Demko’s absence. Conor Garland continues to play like Conor Garland and Pius Sutter and Teddy Blueger continue to provide good depth while new additions Kiefer Sherwood and Erik Brannstrom have exceeded expectations. Given what we know about the U.S Thanksgiving Day playoff trend, it’s not a slam dunk that the Canucks will make the post-season but it’s not a slam dunk they won’t either. Unlike last year when the team had enough of a cushion in the standings to play games pressure-free for the most part in the second half, it appears they won’t have that luxury this season. As Tocchet always likes to say, things are going to just keep ‘getting tougher’ and the Canucks are going to have to ‘embrace the hard’ as they deal with the grind of an NHL season. Their playoff hopes will depend on it.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has confirmed that running back Isiah Pacheco and defensive end Charles Omenihu will not play against the Carolina Panthers in Week 12. South Korea's spy agency said earlier on Friday that a North Korean soldier who was captured while fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine had died of his wounds. Zelensky did not specify how many North Koreans had died after being captured by Ukrainian troops. Zelensky had earlier said that nearly 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been "killed or wounded" so far as they joined Russia's forces in combat in its western Kursk border region, where Ukraine mounted a shock incursion in August. South Korea's intelligence service had previously put the number of killed or wounded North Koreans at 1,000, saying the high casualty rate could be down to an unfamiliar battlefield environment and their lack of capability to counter drone attacks. The White House on Friday confirmed the South Korean estimates, saying that Pyongyang's troops were being sent to their deaths in futile attacks by generals who see them as "expendable". "We also have reports of North Korean soldiers taking their own lives rather than surrendering to Ukrainian forces, likely out of fear of reprisal against their families in North Korea in the event that they're captured," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. For the last several years, Jrue Holiday has been the guy who you trade for to win a championship. He has been a winner throughout his entire career, and now, the Spurs might have a player just like him on their roster. The best part is the Spurs drafted Stephon Castle in the 2024 draft, and he is proving his value in his rookie season. Crucially, they now have him for a cheap price for the foreseeable future. Fans around the league might not have heard of him, but his name will become popular sooner rather than later. The Spurs Have Found Their Jrue Holiday: Stephon Castle On the last episode of the Hoop Collective, the hosts talked about how the Spurs have been much better this season. Some of the reasons are they got veterans like Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes , but they also struck gold with their latest draft pick. ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon is among the latest people to praise Stephon. He said, “We’re going to learn how to say this guy’s name because he’s a really, really good player and you can’t necessarily always see it looking at the box score. He has had some good shooting nights lately, but his shooting numbers overall are not good. He is a winner, a national champion at UConn, and a hell of a defensive player. We’ll see how good of a scorer he becomes, but he impacts winning as a defender. He reminds me a lot of Jrue Holiday when you talk about all those things that Jrue does that impact winning. He’s got a chance to be a pretty dynamite two-way player.” Later on, MacMahon talked about how Spurs coaches value Castle and praise him. He mentioned an interview with Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, in which Johnson praised Castle’s demeanor and spectacular defensive plays. MacMahon said, “He’s stone-faced also like Jrue Holiday and when something goes wrong, he doesn’t get rattled and he is a really impressive rookie.” Castle and Wemby – Defensive Duo of the Future Stephon is playing another impactful player on the defensive end, Victor Wembanyama . Last year, the Spurs were 21st in defensive rating. This year, as of November 26th, they are 9th in defensive rating . They allow 110.6 points per 100 possessions. Of course, Stephon is not the only one responsible for such a jump, but he and Victor have a chance to be a special defensive duo. Impressively, Wemby and Castle post a 104.8 defensive rating when they are on the court together. At just 20 years of age, Castle is playing defensive chess with opponents, asserting himself as the best perimeter defender of his rookie class. Wemby is the backline guy, and Castle is the point-of-attack guy. Teams around the league will have to get used to that. The interesting part is that the Spurs can improve their defense even more. For example, they are allowing 15.4 second-chance points , which puts them at 25th spot in the league. With Victor in the paint, that shouldn’t be the case. They are also 20th in allowed fast break points, another area they can improve thanks to Castle. What About his Scoring? For the season, Castle has been averaging 10.9 points on 39.4% shooting from the floor. But his slow scoring start is a reason for that when he averaged only 5.2 points on 28.9% shooting over the first six games. Over the last nine games, however, he is averaging 15.3 points and 5.0 assists on 44% shooting from the floor. Rookies often have up-and-down periods when it comes to shooting, but Stephon can hang his hat on defense. Is the Jrue Holiday Comparison Real? When Jrue came into the league in 2009, teams were not shooting as many threes as they are today. Even then, Holiday was an amazing defender for his position, and similar to Castle, not a great scorer. During his rookie season, Jrue averaged only 8 points on 44% shooting. Yet, he also averaged 1.1 steals and 2.6 rebounds and was a pesky defender. Stephon might not end up being Jrue Holiday, but the Spurs are known for finding and developing these pesky and gritty players. After all, they had Bruce Bowen and Stephen Jackson on their roster. But, since this is Kansas, you never know when Mother Nature might try to sneak a winter storm past you. You’ve been taught to carry an emergency driving kit in your vehicle for that ‘just in case’ situation – but have you put one together yet and placed it in your vehicle? Having a kit ensures you’re ready for unexpected situations like getting stuck in the snow. Carrying a winter emergency kit in your vehicle is a wise decision for several reasons – namely safety. If you get stuck or your car breaks down, you may need to wait for help in harsh conditions. A winter kit will help you stay warm and safe until help arrives. Or, the fact you have a well-stocked kit may provide you what you need to get yourself out of a bad situation without having to wait for others. Just as important, if not more so, is the need for tires with good tread and windshield wiper blades that keep your windows clean. With that comes the need for washer fluid and to check the anti-freeze level in your radiator. Your heater and defroster will blow cold air if the coolant level is too low. And always keep your gas tank above half full. Knowing you’re prepared for emergencies can give you confidence and reduce anxiety while driving in wintry conditions. Also, your kit may come in handy if you come across someone else in need of assistance. According to the National Highway Transportation Association, you should check your local weather and traffic reports before heading out on a trip. If the roads are not in good shape, consider postponing non-essential travel until the roads are cleared. If you do have to go out, make sure you are prepared in case you become delayed while traveling. If making a long road trip when winter weather is forecasted, consider leaving early or changing your departure to avoid being on the roads during the worst of the storm. They also suggest you familiarize yourself with directions and maps before you go — even if you use a GPS — and let others know your route and anticipated arrival time. Driving Tips • Allow enough time. Trips can take longer during winter than other times of the year. Get an early start and allow plenty of time to reach your destination. • Keep your gas tank full. It may be necessary to change routes or turn back during a bad storm or you may be caught in a traffic delay. • Keep windshield and windows clear. You may want to stop at a safe turnout to use a snow brush or scraper. Use the car defroster and a clean cloth to keep the windows free of fog. • Slow down. A highway speed of 65 miles per hour may be safe in dry weather, but an invitation for trouble on snow and ice. Snow and ice make stopping distances much longer, so keep your seat belt buckled and leave more distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Bridge decks and shady spots can be icy when other areas are not. Remember to avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes. • Be more observant. Visibility is often limited in winter by weather conditions. Slow down and watch for other vehicles that have flashing lights. Visibility may be so restricted during a storm that it is difficult to see the slow-moving equipment. • When stalled, stay with your vehicle and try to conserve fuel while maintaining warmth. Be alert to any possible exhaust or monoxide problems. • Give snowplows room to work. Stay at least four (4) car lengths back from snowplows and snow removal equipment. • Salt brine trucks as well as sand trucks have signs saying “Stay Back.” This is for your safety since material can be spread/sprayed across multiple lanes. • Equipment operators must focus on snow removal and cannot always watch out for motorists. Refrain from, or use extreme caution, when passing snow removal equipment. Caution: Two windows should be cracked slightly to keep fresh air in the vehicle while the candles are lit. • Flashlight and extra batteries: Helps you see in the dark and may be used as a signal device. • First aid kit: Necessary to treat minor injuries. Should include bandages, pain creams, pin relief tablets (Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen). • Snow shovel and ice scraper: For cleaning ice and snow off your car. • Sand or cat litter: These are used for traction if you should become stuck. • Jumper cables: For use if your battery dies or to help someone else. • Basic tools: This should include wrenches, sockets and screwdrivers for a variety of small repairs. • Road flares or reflective triangles: These will alert other drivers that your vehicle is on the road. • Extra phone charger: Very important to keep your cell phone charged. • Tire chains: Useful if you frequently drive in snowy conditions. • Portable air compressor: Cold weather can reduce the air pressure in your tires. Watson has been limited to just 19 games in three seasons because of an NFL suspension and injuries with the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract in 2022. The restructuring allows the team to spread out the salary-cap hit after the 2026 season, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team does not disclose contract specifics. The 29-year-old Watson has two years remaining on his contract with an average of $46 million a year, and with a salary-cap hit of $72.9 million in those seasons. The agreement to restructure his deal will not preclude the Browns from adding talent at the quarterback position in 2025, the person said. Watson played in only seven games this season before suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. He's 9-10 as a starter with Cleveland. The Browns (3-12) have been a major disappointment after making it to the playoffs a year ago behind Joe Flacco, who was signed as a free agent after Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Watson had surgery in October and is expected to make a full recovery. While the team hasn't disclosed its plans at quarterback, it's assumed Watson will be in the mix to be the starter next season. It's also possible the Browns will draft a quarterback in the first round. The team hasn't had a first-round pick the past three years after trading three to the Houston Texans to acquire Watson, who was once considered one of the league's elite QBs. Watson's disappointing tenure has been a sore spot with Cleveland fans, who had hoped the team had finally resolved its interminable QB issues when they signed the three-time Pro Bowler three years ago. But it hasn't worked out, and the major investment in Watson and the salary-cap ramifications of his contract — the largest fully guaranteed deal in league history — have made it difficult for the Browns to upgrade their roster. Watson has shown flashes of being a competent starting quarterback, but there have been just as many moments in which he's looked hesitant in the pocket or unable to connect with receivers down field.
