SOURCE China Telecom GlobalYou knew it was coming, didn’t you? Baseball’s reigning Evil Empire took the initiative this week, signing another high-profile starting pitcher and giving its fans something additional to be grateful for during Thanksgiving week (besides, of course, those shots of the Commissioner’s Trophy being shown off here, there and everywhere throughout Southern California). And after the bombshell announcement Tuesday night, that the Dodgers had signed Blake Snell , the howls could be heard throughout the land. The Dodgers are making a mockery of the sport. The rest of baseball can’t compete. They’re signing everybody! And how are the Cincinnatis and Pittsburghs and Colorados of the sport able to compete with an organization that not only brings in boatloads of money – and has created a second source of runaway revenue through its ties to Japan – but isn’t interested in hoarding it? Shouldn’t the next step be a salary cap to restrain this franchise’s runaway spending? Oh, stop it. Competitive balance is not an issue in baseball, period. Four different teams have won the last four World Series, and nine different fan bases have celebrated championships in the last 12 years. There hasn’t been a repeat champion in ... checks notes ... a quarter of a century. (That would be the New York Yankees, the first Evil Empire, in 1999-2000.) Meanwhile, Kansas City, Detroit and Baltimore have all risen from rebuilding to contention in the last couple of seasons. Milwaukee and Cleveland, both smaller markets, were legitimate threats as this past postseason began. And the Padres, long squeezed between Mexico to their south, the Imperial Valley to their east, the Pacific to their west and L.A. to their north, just might have been the second-best team in baseball in 2024 and, may we remind you, had the Dodgers by the neck going into Game 4 of their National League Division Series . Nor are they going away, even with some payroll retrenching in the wake of controlling owner Peter Seidler’s death. (But, nope, still no parade.) Most of the caterwauling, of course, comes from those whose favorite teams were either outbid or declined to spend. Trust me, no ownership in Major League Baseball can claim poverty, even with the cable TV issues that have scrambled some teams’ finances. Yes, big-market teams start with a financial advantage. Yes, Diamond Sports’ bankruptcy and the cord-cutting revolution have factored in. And yes, the Dodgers and Yankees have insulated themselves to a degree by owning their own cable networks. So, maybe, give them some credit for intelligence and foresight? Front Office Sports reported that deferrals on Snell’s reported five-year, $182 million deal, said to be $60 million, would push the Dodgers closer to the $1 billion mark in deferred money owed to five players. Shohei Ohtani’s whopping $680 million deferred on a $700 million contract signed last winter enabled the Dodgers to add additional pieces. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts also have chunks of deferred money in their contracts – as does, interestingly, Teoscar Hernández on his one-year 2024 deal with the Dodgers. That would make that contract even more of a bargain than we thought. And this is an undisputable fact: Salary caps and other payroll-limiting mechanisms put no limits on front office creativity and ingenuity. It’s been pretty well established that in Guggenheim Baseball’s 13-year ownership of the Dodgers, especially after Mark Walter’s organization corrected the problems of the Frank McCourt era and particularly after Friedman arrived from Tampa Bay in 2015, the Dodgers have a smart, savvy organization whose advantages go way beyond their cash on hand. (And yes, as I noted on social media Tuesday night, we do tease them about sometimes trying too hard to be the smartest guys in the room. But most of the time they are, anyway.) Assuming everyone stays healthy – and as we saw throughout baseball in 2024, that’s a tall ask – what will the Dodgers’ rotation look like in 2025? They’ll have left-hander Snell, a two-time Cy Young Award winner who was one of the victims of a soft free agent market last spring and didn’t sign with the San Francisco Giants until March 19. He got off to a dreadful start as a result but was lights out from the start of July. In 14 starts he was 5-0 (and his team 12-2 in those starts), with a 1.23 ERA, an opponents’ batting average of .123, an 0.78 WHIP, five double-digit strikeout games and a 3.8-1 strikeout to walk ratio, and a complete-game no-hitter, an achievement for someone denigrated as a five-and-dive pitcher. Maybe those final three months spurred him to sign early this time. It’s almost certain the Dodgers will use a six-man rotation from the start of the season, and right now they have seven possibilities and who knows what they do from here. They’ll have Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher. Tyler Glasnow, Snell’s former teammate in Tampa Bay, will be back, as will Tony Gonsolin in his return from Tommy John surgery. Dustin May, essentially inactive since May of 2023, will return, and Clayton Kershaw is expected to re-sign and has indicated he plans to retire a Dodger. Is there room for free agent Jack Flaherty, last season’s major trade deadline acquisition? Or fellow free agent Walker Buehler, who closed out Game 5 of the World Series against the Yankees, following a sometimes spotty comeback from injury? And the wild card might be Roki Sasaki, who will be posted by his Japanese team this winter. The Dodgers had long been considered the favorites to land him, and even Snell’s signing might not change that. Then again, the way the 2024 Dodgers went through pitchers because of injuries – 40 for the season, including 12 starting pitchers – shouldn’t they be tempted to grab every reasonably healthy arm they can and sort it out as they go along? But this is, and should be, the bottom line: Every fan in every sport wants the people running their favorite team to care as much about winning as they do. In a lot of cities, with a lot of teams, that’s really hard to envision. In Dodger Stadium, it’s not hard at all. And if they’re going to be the new Evil Empire, why not just lean into it and have Dieter Ruehle play “The Imperial March” (i.e., Darth Vader’s Theme) before every game? jalexander@scng.com

BOSTON (AP) — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, Flutie threw the Hail Mary and found receiver Gerard Phalen , who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field during BC’s 41-21 victory over North Carolina before the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the anniversary of the Eagles’ Miracle in Miami. “There’s no way its been 40 years,” Flutie told The Associated Press on the sideline a few minutes before he walked out with some of his former teammates to be recognized after a video of The Play was shown on the scoreboards. It’s a moment and highlight that’s not only played throughout decades of BC students and fans, but around the college football world. “What is really so humbling is that the kids 40 years later are wearing 22 jerseys, still,” Flutie said of his old number. “That amazes me.” That game was played on national TV the Friday after Thanksgiving. The ironic thing is it was originally scheduled for earlier in the season before CBS paid Rutgers to move its game against Miami, thus setting up the BC-Miami post-holiday matchup. “It shows you how random some things are, that the game was moved,” Flutie said. “The game got moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was the most watched game of the year. We both end up being nationally ranked and up there. All those things lent to how big the game itself was, and made the pass and the catch that much more relevant and remembered because so many people were watching.” There’s a statue of Flutie winding up to make The Pass outside the north gates at Alumni Stadium. Fans and visitors can often be seen taking photos there. “In casual conversation, it comes up every day,” Flutie said, when asked how many times people bring it up. “It brings a smile to my face every time we talk about it.” A week after the game-ending Flutie pass, the Eagles beat Holy Cross and before he flew off to New York to accept the Heisman. They went on to win the 49th Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. “Forty years seem almost like incomprehensible,” said Phalen, also standing on the sideline a few minutes after the game started. “I always say to Doug: ‘Thank God for social media. It’s kept it alive for us.”’ Earlier this week, current BC coach Bill O’Brien, 55, was asked if he remembered where he was 40 years ago. “We were eating Thanksgiving leftovers in my family room,” he said. “My mom was saying a Rosary in the kitchen because she didn’t like Miami and wanted BC to win. My dad, my brother and I were watching the game. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “Everybody remembers where they were for the Hail Mary, Flutie pass.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. KUWAIT: Key amendments to the Nationality Law of 1959 were published on Monday in the official gazette Kuwait Al-Youm in an Amiri decree, which means they are effective. The amendments almost entirely abolish the right of foreign women to get Kuwaiti citizenship after getting married to Kuwaiti men. Under the previous law, such women had the right to apply for citizenship after five years of marriage, provided they have children. In the past several months, the government has revoked the citizenship of more than 10,000 naturalized wives of Kuwaitis. The amendments also allow revoking the citizenship of Kuwaitis who obtained it through forgery or cheating. All relatives who had obtained citizenship through that person will also lose it. The amendments allow revoking the citizenship of any naturalized Kuwaiti convicted in a final verdict of crimes related to honor or state security crimes or for abusing the Almighty, prophets and HH the Amir. The amendments allow revoking the citizenship of naturalized Kuwaitis if they were dismissed from government jobs over honesty or honor reasons within 10 years of obtaining the citizenship. The amendments also allow authorities to revoke citizenship for national interests and the state’s external security, and also for carrying out anti-state activities. The state can use modern technology in granting citizenship or revoking it, the amendments state. The amendments treat children of Kuwaiti women married to foreigners as Kuwaitis if they maintain their stay in the country and their fathers are held by the enemy, die or divorce their mothers. As per the decree, a foreign male obtaining Kuwaiti citizenship does not entitle his foreign wife to the citizenship. However, their underage children would be treated as Kuwaitis, and they can choose their preferred nationality one year after reaching the legal age. The amendments also abolished allowing authorities to naturalize foreigners including stateless people or bedoons who or their ancestors lived in the country since 1965 and before, and maintained their stay in Kuwait. In the explanatory note, the government says it has become very difficult to trace this category of people. First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense and Interior and Chairman of the Supreme Nationality Committee Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah will hold a meeting on Wednesday with editors-in-chief of daily newspapers and heads of public welfare societies at 10:30 am at Seif Palace. The interior ministry said in a statement on Monday that the meeting aims to clarify the most prominent features of the new Kuwaiti nationality law amendments and discuss the files of dual nationals and those who acquired nationality based on fraud, false statements or incorrect certificates according to article 21, and the files of article 8 (wives of Kuwaitis). Meanwhile, the new residency law which contains tough penalties and high fines of up to five years in jail and KD 10,000 in fines is likely to be implemented in March, a top interior ministry official was quoted as saying. The new residency law was issued by an Amiri decree earlier this month, but it does not become effective until the interior ministry completes the bylaws necessary to apply the law. The new law considers trading in visas or selling residency for money as a felony instead of a misdemeanor in the previous law, director of the residency affairs detectives department Brig Mishaal Al-Shanafa told a local newspaper. The penalty for this crime has been toughened to up to five years in jail and a fine that could reach KD 10,000, said Shanafa, adding that the penalty will be added for each case. Expat workers who pay money to obtain residency are also penalized under the new law, he said. Previously, the penalty was deportation, but under the new law, they will be fined and jailed and then deported, he said. He said that during the first eight months of this year, the department has sent 26,000 expats to the deportation department. Shanafa said the new law stipulates that expat visitors can stay for three months and violators are liable for a one-year jail term and a fine between KD 1,000 and KD 2,000.

AdvertisementMALAGA, Spain (AP) — The last man to face — and beat — Rafael Nadal in professional tennis, 80th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp , converted his 10th match point Friday to finally close out a 6-4, 6-7 (12), 6-3 victory over Daniel Altmaier and help the Netherlands reach its first Davis Cup final by sweeping Germany. Tallon Griekspoor, who is ranked 40th, sealed the 2-0 win for the Dutch in the best-of-three-match semifinal by hitting 25 aces and coming back to defeat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4. When it ended, appropriately, on an ace, Griekspoor shut his eyes, dropped to his knees and spread his arms wide. “We have been talking about this for two, three years,” Griekspoor said. “We believed in ourselves so much. We always felt like this was possible. To do it now feels unbelievable.” The other semifinal is Saturday, with No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner and defending champion Italy taking on Australia . The championship will be decided Sunday. “We don’t have that top 5 player. We don’t that top 10 player. We don’t have that top 15 player,” Dutch captain Paul Harhuuis said. “But it’s a team effort. ... So proud of these guys.” In Friday's opener, van de Zandschulp was up a set and just a point away from leading 5-2 in the second when Altmaier began playing more aggressively and interacting more with the German fans, yelling and throwing uppercuts or raising his arms after key points. In the tiebreaker, Altmaier managed to save five match points before converting his own fourth set point to extend the contest. But van de Zandschulp — who upset four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open — quickly moved out front in the final set, even if he eventually needed five more match points in the last game before serving it out. “At some point, I didn’t know what to do any more on the match points,” van de Zandschulp said. “I had the toughest match of my life on Tuesday (against Nadal), so everything that comes next is maybe a little bit easier.” In the quarterfinals, van de Zandschulp outplayed Nadal for a 6-4, 6-4 result that marked the end of the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s career because the Netherlands went on to eliminate Spain 2-1. The 38-year-old Nadal announced last month that the Davis Cup would be his final event before retiring. Presumably because people purchased tickets ahead of time with plans to watch Nadal compete in the semifinals, there were hundreds of unoccupied blue or gray seats surrounding the indoor hard court at the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martina Carpena in southern Spain on Friday. Now truly a neutral site, the place was not nearly as loud and rowdy as on Tuesday, although there were shouts of “Vamos, Rafa!” that drew laughter while van de Zandschulp played the 88th-ranked Altmaier. It took Griekspoor more than 75 minutes and nearly two full sets to figure out how to break No. 43 Struff and then did it twice in a row — to lead 6-5 in the second set, and then go up 1-0 in the third. That was plenty, because Griekspoor saved the only two break points he faced. The Netherlands hadn’t been to the semifinals since 2001. The Germans — whose best current player, two-time major finalist Alexander Zverev, is not on the team in Malaga — have won three Davis Cups, but not since 1993, when 1991 Wimbledon champion Michael Stich led them to the title. Everyone had their fangs dropped after an avalanche of disappointments. The previous 13 starters varied from underwhelming to awful. It created a buzz kill. So who is ruining Thanksgiving now? The nonBolievers in Bo Nix. I don’t get it. No matter how much life after Peyton Manning has put your guard up, how can you not embrace the rookie? Truth be told, I am over it. This is not about keeping receipts. It is about facts, trying to understand why a faction in the media — national and local — and fans (or perhaps social media trolls) cannot see the truth. All anyone wanted since Peyton was a serviceable leader, someone who could win games, and throw more passes to players in an orange jersey than the other team. Over the past 10 games, Nix has delivered 20 touchdowns — 16 passing, three rushing, one receiving — with two turnovers. According to CBS Sports, the quarterbacks who have matched or bettered that stat line over the past 10 years are Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. All first-ballot Hall of Famers. Yet, we have those diminishing Nix for his perceived low ceiling, inconsistent footwork and lack of success against man coverage. Still, others insist with a straight face that they would rather have Russell Wilson. What in the actual heck is going on here? Nix is putting up historically great numbers — the best by a rookie since Dak Prescott in 2016 — and a loud faction refuses to recognize it, creating straw arguments that go deeper into the weeds than bees and butterflies. I am not saying you should wear your passion for Nix like a thorny crown. But is it too much to ask for an open mind and common sense? Those reluctant to admit Nix is succeeding are revealing their own ego, making their dislike personal, either for the kid or coach Sean Payton. I believed Nix would work because of Payton’s confidence when he drafted him. Payton told us at the combine that he would be better at identifying a quarterback than most. This stuck with me because the coach’s Hall of Fame legacy hinged on getting this decision right. He had never worked with a rookie, but he had 15 years of offensive dominance in New Orleans that suggested he knew what he wanted his handpicked quarterback to look like. Payton screwed it up the first few weeks, trying to make Nix drink out of a fire hose with endless dropbacks. But after the opening two losses, the two have met in the middle. An appreciation for his athleticism emerged — he runs better than scouts expected — along with his edge. When Nix yelled at Payton on the sideline on Oct. 6 — something the coach appreciated — he showed why he was the starter. Everything since has shown why he is clearly the future. He has been the Broncos’ best player on the field since the end of October. But, but, but, he can’t throw downfield. Really? That’s funny. He has 716 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 126.9 rating on passes of 10-plus yards over the past five games, per Fox Sports. This includes multiple darts between the numbers and over layered defenders to Courtland Sutton and Devaughn Vele. But those were off-script, right? Try again. Nix delivered these lasers from the pocket. Listen, he is not perfect. He will have bad games. But do you remember what life looked like with Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco and Teddy Bridgewater? Worse, some of the same people who were Druthers for Drew Lock refuse to acknowledge Nix’s development. Make it make sense. Nix boasts four games with a 70% completion rate with at least two touchdown passes and no picks. You know how many Broncos quarterbacks have done that since Peyton? Zero. Lock did it once in 24 games. Wilson twice in 30 starts. When Keenum was missing Demaryius Thomas sprinting open down the sideline, when Flacco looked like he had never seen a blitz, when Brandon Allen couldn’t throw the ball into the wind, when Paxton Lynch was showing up late and leaving early, Broncos Country had fever dreams about the type of stats Nix is compiling. Still, I can’t go on my Twitter timeline or turn on the radio without hearing someone dissing Nix or advocating for Wilson. Yes, Wilson was functional last year, and made terrific plays scribbling outside the lines. But the Broncos stunk in goal-to-goal situations and were awful in the red zone. By the time the Broncos beat the Chiefs last October, Payton had seen enough. He was over the veteran, viewing his style of play as unsustainable because of the lack of timing throws and endless sacks (45 in 15 games). Compare that to Nix, who is on pace for 27. Payton chose to absorb a $53 million dead cap hit this season and $32 million next year to cut Wilson. It was uncommon, but not surprising if you know anything about how that relationship had deteriorated. Would you rather they stayed together for the kids, delaying the divorce until after this season when the quarterbacks available in the draft are Two Men (Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward) and Four Maybes (Jalen Milroe, Quinn Ewers, Garrett Nussmeier and Carson Beck)? It is OK to take a deep breath, trust your eyes and the numbers and admit Nix is playing well. If you are still tearing him down, the problem is you, not him.
Stacey Solomon is reportedly eager to grow her family with husband Joe Swash, despite their already bustling household. The Loose Women star has expressed to her social media followers that motherhood is her "favourite thing in the world". According to The Mirror, she's even made a "baby pact" with her good friend Mrs Hinch, also known as Sophie Hinchcliffe, who has just announced her third pregnancy. Stacey was quick to send her congratulations, reports Birmingham Live . Insiders claim that Stacey, who shares Rex, Rose, and Belle with Joe, along with her older sons Zachary and Leighton from previous relationships, is considering a sixth child. They are confident that there's "nothing" Stacey and Joe, who has son Harry, 17, from another relationship, can't handle together. The couple has been contemplating adding more animals to their family at Pickle Cottage in Essex. The freshman was sacked at the Panthers' 49-yard line by Louisville's Ashton Gillotte, who rolled on the quarterback's ankle. Holstein was in a walking boot as he was helped to the cart. Holstein missed last week's game against Clemson after suffering a head injury in the loss to Virginia two weeks ago. Holstein was 3-for-5 passing for 51 yards and an interception before exiting. Nate Yarnell, who threw for 350 yards in the loss to Clemson, replaced Holstein. --Field Level Media
