COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A fight broke out at midfield after Michigan stunned No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday as Wolverines players attempted to plant their flag and were met by Buckeyes who confronted them. Police had to use pepper spray to break up the players, who threw punches and shoves in the melee that overshadowed the rivalry game. Ohio State police said in a statement “multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray.” Ohio State police will investigate the fight, according to the statement. After the Ohio State players confronted their bitter rivals at midfield, defensive end Jack Sawyer grabbed the top of the Wolverines' flag and ripped it off the pole as the brawl moved toward the Michigan bench. Eventually, police officers rushed into the ugly scene. Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he understood the actions of his players. “There are some prideful guys on our team who weren't going to sit back and let that happen,” Day said. The two Ohio State players made available after the game brushed off questions about it. Michigan running back Kalel Mullings, who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, didn't like how the Buckeyes players involved themselves in the Wolverines' postgame celebration. He called it “classless.” “For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game," he said in an on-field interview with Fox Sports. “It’s just bad for the sport, bad for college football. But at the end of the day, you know some people got to — they got to learn how to lose, man. ... We had 60 minutes, we had four quarters, to do all that fighting.” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said everybody needs to do better. “So much emotions on both sides," he said. "Rivalry games get heated, especially this one. It’s the biggest one in the country, so we got to handle that better.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. After firing third-year coach Matt Eberflus on Friday – the first time the Bears have terminated a head coach midway through a season in their 105-year history – a long list of candidates now stands in line as potential replacements, including Texans offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowik. A week ago, Slowik was listed as a potential candidate for the head job in Chicago by USA Today reporter Jack McKessy , who wrote: "Matt Eberflus is perhaps the clearest example of a sitting duck head coach since, well, former Bears head coach Matt Nagy (remember the reports he'd be fired after Thanksgiving in 2021?). Chicago has been on a downward spiral ever since the Week 8 loss to the Commanders on Jayden Daniels' Hail Mary pass. The Bears have already fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron after less than one full season, and some signs are pointing to a lost locker room in Chicago. For the second time in four years, the team appears set to fire its head coach one season after drafting a rookie quarterback." McKessy’s crystal ball proved accurate in predicting Eberflus’ departure, and although the Texans’ offense has struggled down the stretch this season, Slowik’s 2023 resume still makes him one of the top contenders on the coaching carousel. After spending time with DeMeco Ryans in San Francisco, Slowik was appointed offensive coordinator in Houston last year, steering the Texans to a Wild Card win over the Browns in C.J. Stroud’s breakout Offensive Rookie of the Year season. Slowik signed on for another season in Houston back in January, also interviewing for head coaching jobs in Carolina, Atlanta, Washington, Tennessee, and Seattle over the offseason. Bobby Slowik on last years offense vs this years offense: “I’m pretty positive our offense is better right now” pic.twitter.com/vzmyjMRUrw Houston’s offense has taken a step back this year, suffering serious second-half scoring droughts behind an offensive line that has surrendered the fifth-most sacks. Stroud’s turnover battles are as much on the quarterback as they are Slowik’s play calling, but with connections to Kyle Shanahan, he’ll still be viewed as a Top 10 candidate in Chicago or any other city in need of a new coach between now and next season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George has a bone bruise on his left knee and will miss two games, the team said Thursday. The 76ers said George did not suffer any structural damage when he injured the same knee that he hyperextended during the preseason in Wednesday night's loss at Memphis. The game marked the first time this season the All-Star trio of George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey started a game together. George will miss home games Friday against Brooklyn and Sunday against the Los Angeles Clippers, his former team. A nine-time All-Star, the 34-year-old George will be evaluated again on Monday. Wednesday's 117-111 loss to the Grizzlies dropped the Sixers to 2-12, the worst record in the NBA headed into Thursday night's games. George signed a four-year, $212 million contract with Philadelphia after five seasons with the Clippers. He has averaged 14.9 points in eight games this season. Embiid has been out with injuries, load management rest and a suspension, while Maxey was sidelined with a hamstring injury. An expected contender in the Eastern Conference, the Sixers haven't won since an overtime victory against Charlotte on Nov. 10. In its recent statement, the Arab League accused Iran of interfering in Syria's internal matters, urging Tehran to "respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity." Responding to these allegations, Araghchi released a comprehensive statement in Arabic on X, outlining Iran's regional objectives and underscoring the nation's commitment to maintaining stability and order. “Like you, we aim to achieve stability, calm, and prevent chaos and disturbances in Syria,” he stated. The top diplomat elaborated on Iran's goals, highlighting the importance of preserving Syria's unity and territorial integrity, ensuring the security of all ethnic and sectarian groups, and protecting holy sites. Araghchi also emphasized the need to limit illegal arms, reject foreign intervention, and prevent Syria from becoming a base for terrorism. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces from the territories they had unlawfully seized and called for the establishment of a truly representative government in Syria. Moreover, the top diplomat emphasized that the ongoing regional chaos necessitates rational, inclusive, and collaborative strategies, cautioning against provocations that could incite sectarian conflict and justify foreign intervention. “Iran shares with other countries in the region a vision for a safe and peaceful transition towards an inclusive government in Syria with the participation of all ethnic groups,” Araghchi asserted. The foreign minister criticized those stirring up discord, pointing out that they attempt to fulfill their desires by blaming external forces for Syria's problems. He argued that such actions aim to legitimize continued occupation by the Israeli regime and the United States, justify foreign interference, and exclude certain Syrian groups from political participation. The foreign minister also highlighted the importance of avoiding divisiveness and sectional interests, stating, “Navigating the current turbulent period in the region requires rationality, participation, cooperation, and avoiding the stirring of conflicts and temporary interests.” Araghchi concluded by reiterating Iran's commitment to collaborating with other regional countries to create an inclusive government in Syria, indicating a readiness to support efforts in achieving this aim. Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government earlier this month, recent developments in Syria have heightened uncertainties about the country's political future.
