As of Nov. 18, a total of 294 dairies in California were under quarantine due to the avian flu, state agriculture officials confirmed. More than 4 million turkeys and chickens have been killed at poultry ranches across the state in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading. Meanwhile, the bird flu virus was detected in a batch of raw milk from Raw Farm in Fresno County, the California Department of Public Health reported. The Fresno Bee talked to María Soledad, a food safety inspection service spokeswoman at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to learn more about the virus and how it affects food safety. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, highly pathogenic avian influenza — also known as bird flu or H5N1 — is a highly contagious and often deadly disease primarily found in poultry. It is “caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5) and A (H7) viruses,” the agency said on its website. HPAI can spread from wild birds to domestic poultry and other animals. The virus can also infect humans in rare cases. “It is important to note that ‘highly pathogenic’ refers to severe impact in birds, not necessarily in humans,” the agency said. Unlike seasonal influenza viruses, which are typically contracted through human-to-human transmission, avian influenza viruses are spread by infected birds through saliva, mucus and feces, according to the CDC. The virus can also be present in the respiratory secretions, organs, blood, or body fluids of other infected animals — including milk. Human infections occur when the virus enters the eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled through airborne droplets, aerosol particles or dust. It can also be transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. “Illness in humans from avian influenza virus infections have ranged in severity from no symptoms or mild illness to severe disease that resulted in death,” the CDC said. “Consumers can safely enjoy turkey this holiday season,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration wrote in an email to The Bee, noting that food safety inspectors examine turkeys for disease “before and after slaughter.” That includes your Thanksgiving bird. “The turkeys from farms with confirmed avian influenza don’t even get sent to slaughter,” Soledad said. “They are destroyed on premises.” During an avian flu outbreak, “The chance of infected poultry or eggs entering the food chain is low,” the FDA said on its website in April, “because of the rapid onset of symptoms in poultry as well as the safeguards in place, which include testing of flocks and federal inspection programs.” “When food is properly prepared and stored, the risk of consumers becoming infected with HPAI is reduced even further,” the FDA said. UC Davis professor Linda J. Harris, who focuses on microbial food safety, says you should prepare your Thanksgiving turkey using four essential steps: clean, cook, chill and separate. According to the USDA, any traces of highly pathogenic avian influenza in your turkey are inactivated when food reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. The USDA recommends following this rule anytime you’re preparing raw poultry, including chicken. On its Thanksgiving food safety website , the USDA has videos and information including calculators that help you determine the appropriate amount of time to thaw and cook your turkey. “Simply select your turkey’s weight, along with your preferred thawing and cooking methods, and you’ll immediately receive guidance on how to safely prepare your turkey this Thanksgiving!’ USDA congressional public affairs specialist Maria Machuca wrote in an email to The Bee. “There is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted to humans through properly prepared food,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on its website. Pasteurized milk and other dairy products are safe to consume and cook with, according to Hebah Ghanem, infectious disease specialist at University of California San Francisco, Fresno. “The most important thing that it has to be pasteurized, because the virus is killed with heat,” Ghanem told The Bee. “Pasteurization of milk was adopted decades ago as a basic public health measure to kill dangerous bacteria and largely eliminate the risk of getting sick,” the FDA said on its website. All egg products are pasteurized as required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “This means that they have been rapidly heated and held at a minimum required temperature for a specified time to destroy bacteria,” the agency said. However, eggs that are still in their shells aren’t required to be pasteurized, leading to potential health risks if eaten raw or uncooked. According to the CDC, avian flu symptoms in humans may include: California dairy workers infected with avian flu have experienced mild flu-like symptoms, The Bee previously reported. “All the cases that we have here in California are very mild,” Ghanem told the Fresno Bee in October. “They haven’t needed hospitalization.” To prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, people should avoid exposure to dead animals, Ghanem said in October. Fantasy plays: Players to start and sit for NFL Week 13Freshman wide receiver George Dimopoulos threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dane Pardridge on the first play of the second overtime to lift Northern Illinois to a 28-20 victory over Fresno State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Monday afternoon in Boise, Idaho. The Huskies disguised the game-winning play as a jet sweep, but Dimopoulos pulled up and found Pardridge behind the defense for the winning score. Dimopoulos followed up his first career pass with a two-point conversion toss to quarterback Josh Holst to give the Huskies (8-5) bowl wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2010-11. "When they missed the field goal (to win) at the end of the game, I said, ‘We're going to empty the clip and figure out ways to go win this game by any means necessary,'" said Northern Illinois coach Thomas Hammock said. "George Dimopoulos did a phenomenal job executing those plays at the end and our guys wanted it. They wanted it for those (30) seniors and I was proud they were able to get it done." Fresno State interim head coach Tim Skipper tipped his cap to Hammock and his staff for their creativity regarding trick plays. "All season long, they've been doing those plays (in the red zone) and they keep on inventing new ones," Skipper said. After Kanon Woodill booted a 29-yard field goal to make it 6-3, Fresno State interim head coach Tim Skipper gave Wood the controls for the Bulldogs' next drive -- and he needed just four plays to go 90 yards for a score. He hooked up with Dalena for a 54-yard bomb before taking a keeper untouched up the middle for a 13-yard score and a 13-3 lead. NIU took the first possession of the second half 76 yards for a score. Tight end Grayson Barnes leaped between two Bulldogs and snagged Holst's 26-yard lob with his right hand to cut the deficit to 13-10 with 11:22 left in the third. The recent election here in Churchill County and Nevada had some interesting results. Former President Donald Trump won the state, 728,858 votes to Vice President Kamala Harris’s 682,966. Nationwide, Trump won by 2.6 million votes, not the landslide he claims. That is less than the 2.9 million votes Hillary Clinton got over Trump in the popular vote in the 2016 election. In 2020, President Joe Biden got 7 million more votes than Trump, much closer to a landslide. What was unexpected but welcomed by Democrats was the win by Democratic incumbent Sen. Jacky Rosen over Republican challenger Sam Brown. Rosen received 701,105 votes to 677,046 for Brown. Thousands of Nevadans who voted for Trump then voted for Rosen or “None of these candidates.” Brown faced a lot of opposition from the Nevada State Republican Party. His changing positions on the issues, such as Yucca Mountain and abortion, didn’t help. His views on abortion were especially confusing. He claimed to be against abortion in most circumstances, but his wife’s campaign commercial seemed to show the opposite. She talked about her unexpected pregnancy and subsequent abortion, before she met Brown. Amy Larsen was 24, unmarried and in the military, an adult with a secure job. When she discovered she was pregnant, she had an abortion at 51⁄2 weeks, far too early to know if there were problems with the baby or any danger to her health. This was a totally elective abortion, which was her right. She then met and married Sam Brown. She talked about his comfort and compassion. What is confusing and hypocritical is that she and Brown now want to prevent other women from having the choice she had. This showcases one of the fundamental principles of the modern Republican Party – hypocrisy. This isn’t new, but it’s still rather mind-boggling. In line with their rejection of Brown, Nevadans approved ballot Question 6, which would amend the state constitution to create a fundamental right to an abortion. Churchill County voted 6,575 to 6,204 against Question 6, but statewide, the vote was 876,104 to 489,241 in favor, an overwhelming endorsement of reproductive rights. This was the first vote on this issue, so it will have to be approved again in 2026 to become part of the Nevada Constitution. Another controversial initiative, Question 3, promoted an open primary election and ranked choice voting. The open primary, often called a “Jungle Primary,” would list every candidate for an office regardless of party affiliation. People would then choose their preferred candidate from this very long list. The top five candidates would then proceed to the general election, regardless of party. Since Question 3 was first approved in 2022, it would have become law if passed in 2024. However, it was defeated 731,794 to 639,067. Nevada’s normal primary election process will continue. Question 7 was another controversial issue. This law would require photo ID for in-person voting or the inclusion of personal information, such as a Social Security number, on mail-in ballots. This measure was overwhelmingly approved by Nevada voters, 1,029,608 to 376,179. This will need to be voted on again in 2026 to become law. Much of the opposition was based on the fact that this is a solution in search of a problem, since voter fraud is basically non-existent in Nevada. If this is approved a second time, the hope is it won’t disenfranchise people who may not have the required identification. We’ll have to see. Nevada’s results illustrate a nationwide phenomenon this election. “Exit polls showed that the more attention voters paid to political news, the more likely they were to vote for Harris, by wide margins. Harris +13 for voters who paid a great deal or a lot of attention. Trump +23 for voters who paid little or none at all. In a double-blind poll conducted in October, voters preferred Harris’s policies to Trump’s when they weren’t told whose policies were whose.” (Dan Rather, Team Steady, Nov. 11) Nevadans chose Trump but showed they agreed more with Harris’s positions.
