Commanders get by Falcons in OT for long-awaited playoff berthA fan who racially abused Arsenal player Thomas Partey in a social media post was banned from attending all games for three years on Tuesday. Charles Ogunmilade, who is Black, admitted to sending a "grossly offensive" message on X, which he claimed was satire of what a racist white person would say. He posted the offensive comment in April 2023 after Partey, a Ghana international who is Black, missed a shot during Arsenal's 3-3 draw with Southampton . The court in London was informed the post on X was reported to the police, who visited Ogunmilade's home. He said the comment was intended to be a sarcastic quote among a group of friends. "I am not a racist person," Ogunmilade said in court. While issuing his sentence, magistrate Shaoni Myer said Ogunmilade's early guilty plea, prior good character and experience of racism were taken into account. The soccer banning order also requires him to surrender his passport to police whenever the England men's national team plays an away game abroad. He was ordered to pay a fine and costs totaling £260 ($325).
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola committed himself to Manchester City for another two years on Thursday and quickly set his sights on adding to his record-breaking reign. Guardiola ended uncertainty about his future by signing a contract extension that would prolong his tenure as City manager to 11 seasons. “I have said this many times before, but I have everything a manager could ever wish for," said the 53-year-old Catalan coach, whose current deal was due to expire at the end of this season. "Hopefully now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus.” Guardiola has overseen a period of unprecedented dominance since joining City in 2016. He has gone on to win six Premier League titles in seven years at the Etihad Stadium and also won the Champions League. In total, he has won 15 major trophies at the club. He has set new benchmarks, with City becoming the first team to win four-straight English league titles and the first to amass 100 points in a single season in 2018. He also led City to the treble in 2023, winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in one season — matching Manchester United's achievement in 1999. “Manchester City means so much to me. This is my ninth season here. We have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club,” Guardiola added in his statement. “That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons.” Publicly, Guardiola gave no indication about whether he would stay on even as he entered the final months of his contract. That led to speculation about potential successors, but City remained hopeful he could be convinced to sign another extension. He has already managed City for longer than any his former clubs, having spent four years at Barcelona and three at Bayern Munich. City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said he was “delighted” that Guardiola is staying. “His hunger for improvement and success remains insatiable and the direct beneficiaries of that will continue to be our players and coaching staff, the culture of our club, and the English game at large,” he said. “This renewal will take Pep beyond a decade of coaching Manchester City and the opportunity to continue to re-write the managerial record books.” Guardiola's new deal comes at a time when City's Premier League dominance appears to be under threat . The four-time defending champion has lost four games in succession in all competitions — the worst losing streak of Guardiola's managerial career. Guardiola is widely considered one of the greatest managers of all time, having been a serial winner at Barcelona, Bayern and City. He has won 33 major titles with those clubs, including three Champions League trophies. His decision to stay at City also comes as the club faces a slew of alleged financial breaches . Punishment could be as extreme as expulsion from the league. City faces more than 100 charges ranging over a nine-year period when it was trying to establish itself as the biggest force in English soccer. The club denies the charges and Guardiola had said in September — when a closed-door hearing was scheduled — that he welcomed the chance to clear the club’s name. A verdict is not expected until next year. James Robson is at https://twitter.com/jamesalanrobson AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

In a long post on social media platform LinkedIn, Southgate said he is searching for his next "purpose" in life after his time as the coach of the England men's national team from 2016-2024. "This higher purpose kept me on track, gave me structure, made my life more fulfilling and is going to be extremely difficult to replicate," Southgate wrote Tuesday. Timeline: Jimmy Carter, 1924-2024Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said Friday that his government would submit legislation to repeal a law by former president Macky Sall granting amnesty for deadly political violence. The controversial amnesty was granted just before March 2024 elections as Sall sought to calm protests sparked by his last-minute postponement of presidential elections in the traditionally stable West African country. Critics say the move was to shield perpetrators of serious crimes, including homicides, committed during three years of political tensions between February 2021 and February 2024. But it also allowed Sonko, a popular opposition figure, to stand in the elections after court convictions had made him ineligible, as well as Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who eventually won the presidency. “In addition to putting compensation for victims into the budget, a draft law will be submitted to your august Assembly to repeal the March 6, 2024 amnesty so that light may be shed and responsibilities determined on whatever side they may lie,” Sonko said in a policy speech before lawmakers. Sonko’s government had pledged earlier this month to investigate dozens of deaths resulting from political violence between 2021 and 2024. “It’s not a witch hunt and even less vengeance... It’s justice, the foundation without which social peace cannot be built,” Sonko told lawmakers.Wild return to the ice rested and, they hope, a little healthier

Against Scott Boland in the 56th over, Pant had tried playing a falling ramp shot, but inside-edged the ball onto his stomach. Australia skipper Pat Cummins had placed fielders in the deep in fine leg and third man in case Pant repeated that shot. It did happen that way as on the next ball Pant tried the same shot, but to his horror, this time the top-edge went to Nathan Lyon at deep third man, as the batter was dismissed for 28 off 37 balls, leaving Gavaskar livid. "Stupid, stupid, stupid! You've got two fielders there and you still go for that. You missed the previous shot, and look where you've been caught. That is throwing away your wicket. You cannot say that that's your natural game. I'm sorry. That is not your natural game. That is a stupid shot. That is letting your team down badly. You have to understand the situation as well. He should not be going in that (India's) dressing room, he should be going in the other dressing room," said Gavaskar on ABC Sport. In this series so far, Pant has averaged just 20.66, with his highest score being 37. On Fox Cricket, Australia women's captain Alyssa Healy and former men's player Kerry O'Keeffe lauded Cummins for his spot-on field placing to get Pant out. “You sense that Pant was placed there for such a shot. They also had the two deep (fielders) on the leg side, a fine leg and a backward square anticipating something like that,” O'Keeffe noted. “Obviously Rishabh didn't mean the ball to go to Nathan Lyon, but with two out on the leg side it's a risky shot,” added Alyssa.“Pat was grinning, he knew he had the field right there,” replied O'Keeffe. Meanwhile, Gavaskar suggested for all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to be promoted up the batting order, citing that the youngster is more responsible and aware of the game situation. Before lunch break came, Reddy showcased his good footwork and proactiveness to be not out on 40. In the series, Reddy has been a revelation with the bat, showcasing maturity and composure on his first tour of Australia. "He should be promoted up the order, because he bats with a great deal of responsibility. He bats with a great deal of awareness of the situation. Awareness of the situation is so important when you're playing Test cricket." Key player Vikings WR Jordan Addison Asked how he would defending himself, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson said: “It’s either let everybody else go off or let Justin go off. I’m going to let everybody else go off.” Well, the Chicago Bears let Jordan Addison go off. Addison had a career-high 162 yards receiving on eight catches, including a 69-yard catch and run to open the second half. His most important grab might have been the last one, when he connected with Sam Darnold on a 12-yard reception on third and 10 from the Vikings 21-yard line to move the chains as the overtime entered sudden death. (Honorable mention here to tight end T.J. Hockenson , who took over in OT and capped 114-yard day with three catches for 58 yards in the extra period.) Key play 11 points in 29 seconds After the Vikings kicked a field goal to go up 27-16 just after the two-minute warning, the Bears, with no timeouts, came all the way back. DeAndre Carter’s 55-yard kickoff return certainly helped. But starting when there were 29 seconds on the clock, Caleb Williams hit Keenan Allen on a 1-yard TD pass and connected with D.J. Moore on a two-point conversion. Then the Bears recovered an onside kick after it bounced off Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt ’s foot. Williams hit Moore for 27 yards on the next play. After the Bears clocked it, Cairo Santos kicked a 48-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. Sign up for the Access Vikings newsletter Key number 6 Entering Sunday’s games, only the Dallas Cowboys (three) had fewer rushing touchdowns than the Vikings ’ five. The team’s struggles running the ball in the red zone, in particular, are acute, and Aaron Jones ’ fumble at the 1 in the first quarter didn’t help that perception. Jones punched in the Vikings’ sixth rushing TD of the season late in the third quarter to give them a 14-point lead. He had 22 carries for 106 yards, his second 100-yard game with the Vikings. But Minnesota was only 3-for-7 in the red zone (though on the last trip inside the 20, the Vikings intentionally set up Parker Romo ’s game-winning field goal) and has scored only 21 TDs in 39 red-zone drives (53.8%). Up next Vs. Arizona, noon Sunday After a three-game road trip, the Vikings return to U.S. Bank Stadium, where they will play three of their four December games.
