FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — If Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh has given any thought to the possibility of clinching a playoff berth in his first season with the team with a win at New England on Saturday, he isn't letting it show. “Just attacking, that’s our mindset. Win the next game," he said. Harbaugh's relative silence on the topic isn't a total departure from his usual business-first approach, but there could also be something else at play. Aside from wrapping up what would be Harbaugh’s fourth postseason trip in five years as an NFL head coach, since the Chargers (9-6) have the tiebreaker over the Denver Broncos but not against the Pittsburg Steelers, Los Angeles would appear destined to be the sixth seed in the postseason. That would mean a trip to Baltimore and a possible Harbaugh Bowl 4 matchup opposite older brother and Ravens coach John Harbaugh. The Ravens beat the Chargers earlier this season 30-23. But first things first. And that's taking care of the Patriots (3-12), who have lost five straight games but showed several signs of offensive improvement during their 24-21 loss at Buffalo last week. Jim Harbaugh sees a dangerous group. And his players say they are locked in on the present. “Always one week at a time. We’ve got a lot of respect for this Patriots team," Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert said. "We know we’re going on the road and have to be prepared for everything.” If the Patriots are going to play the role of spoiler, it must start with rookie quarterback Drake Maye. He has thrown a touchdown pass in seven consecutive games, tied with Jim Plunkett (1971) for the longest such streak by a rookie in franchise history. But he has also thrown at least one interception in each of the past seven games. Overall, the Patriots have a minus-9 turnover margin. The Patriots did score 14 points in the first half during last week’s loss at Buffalo. Still, New England's offense has had trouble finishing drives, scoring touchdowns on only 47.7% of its chances in the red zone. Maye said that doesn't mean he plans to be timid over the final two games. “I think there’s definitely a way we need to cut down turnovers,” he said. “That starts with me protecting the football and throwing it incomplete or throwing it in the dirt or little things like that. I’m still going to be aggressive.” The Chargers could have a major weapon return in running back J.K. Dobbins, who has been on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury against Baltimore on Nov. 25. With Dobbins out of the lineup, the Bolts have struggled to have any consistency on offense. Los Angeles has averaged only 74.8 rushing yards in the past four games, which is quite a drop from the 118.1 they were generating before Dobbins’ injury. Dobbins was listed as questionable, while Gus Edwards — who rushed for two touchdowns and a season-high 68 yards in last Thursday’s win over Denver — was ruled out with an ankle injury. Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins would likely take over in the backfield if Dobbins also can't play. Justin Herbert, who has 20,466 career passing yards, needs 153 yards to surpass Peyton Manning for the most in a player's first five seasons in league history. Ladd McConkey is 40 yards away from becoming the first Chargers rookie receiver to reach 1,000 yards since Keenan Allen in 2013. The Chargers have won 11 of their past 13 when playing in the Eastern time zone, including last year’s 6-0 victory over the Patriots. Los Angeles has five of its nine games on Eastern time this season for the first time since 2005. They are trying to become the ninth team since 1988 on Pacific time to win at least four games when having to travel at least three time zones. The Chargers have given up two touchdowns and a field goal on the first possession in the last three games. They allowed only one touchdown on an opening drive in the first 12 games. Another cause for concern is that the Bolts have given up scores on the first two series in back-to-back games. AP Sports Writer Joe Reedy in Los Angeles contributed to this report. Rocket Lab Establishes Synspective SatelliteNina Agdal’s attorneys filed a letter with the courts claiming that Dillon Danis “very likely” damaged his own cell phone to prevent evidence being collected in an ongoing lawsuit against the fighter. Agdal, a model and social influencer who is in a relationship with Logan Paul , filed the lawsuit against Danis back in 2023 claiming he posted “despicable” things about her more than 250 times since a boxing match he booked against Paul was first announced. Agdal claimed she suffered “humiliation, emotional distress and reputational harm” from Danis’ repeated posts about her. Agdal also claimed that at least one post Danis made involved a sexually explicit image taken from a “romantic encounter” more than 10 years ago, alleging it violated federal and state law. Following plenty of back and forth between attorneys, Danis eventually submitted his cell phone for examination but Agdal’s attorneys are now crying foul that he may have purposefully destroyed the device before handing it over. “We write to apprise the Court that an independent forensic specialist conducted an initial inspection of Defendant Dillon Danis’s dead cellular phone and determined it is very likely its condition is the result of an intentional effort to render it inoperable and, thus, destroy electronically stored information (ESI) central to this case,” Agdal’s attorneys wrote in a letter addressed to Judge Michael Hammer. “We therefore request that, as a precursor to a motion for spoliation sanctions under Fed. R. Civ. P. 37, the Court order Defendant to pay the expenses associated with completing a forensic examination of the phone in order to confirm whether the data thereon is unrecoverable, as appears to be the case. Plaintiff already incurred over $5,000 in forensic expenses, and, under the circumstances, it would be unjust for Plaintiff to bear the additional expenses.” Agdal’s attorneys claim that the phone was the “exclusive device” Danis used to post about their client and search for content of her to post. They also allege that third-party discovery “revealed that he also used the phone to text with others about his harassing conduct and to coordinate future posts about [Agdal], despite denying under oath that he had done so in his interrogatory answers.” In the letter, Agdal’s attorneys say that a forensic specialist hired to examine the phone confirmed that the charging port was “rendered inoperable” and the device will not turn on. The forensic expert offered his opinion that contradicts Danis’ claims in testimony that the device died “after he took it in the sauna and then subsequently tried to charge it.” The attorneys claim the forensic expert “indicates it appears highly likely that [Danis] is lying about how his phone was damaged.” While the attorneys still hope to recovery additional data from the phone, the costs incurred still fall on Agdal with estimates running up to $5,000 for the initial next steps to get the device to power on again and then an additional $16,200 to $23,500 in fees to “extract any data that is recoverable.” Danis’ attorneys opposed the expenses related to a forensic expert examining the device because the lawsuit involves “posting of a photograph on Twitter that discovery in this case has established, was taken by [Agdal’s former boyfriend] and subsequently made available on the internet, along with a multitude of other nude photographs of [Agdal], who earns her living by posing in a state of partial and complete undress.” They also argued that Danis primary means of communication was from messaging — not email or text — and Agdal’s attorneys have already received all of his Twitter, What’s App and Facebook messaging. “There is no evidence that there is any material of substantial value on [Danis] non-functioning mobile telephone,” Danis’ attorneys wrote. The letter by Agdal’s attorneys was filed on Dec. 4. The judge hasn’t issued any ruling yet on the matter. When filing the lawsuit against Danis, Agdal asked for unspecified damages and she’s requesting no less than $150,000 per violation of federal law, which prohibits sharing intimate images.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears to have broken his silence and addressed comments made by Donald Trump encouraging Canada to become “our 51st state.” “Some information about Canada for Americans,” Trudeau wrote on X Thursday afternoon above a video ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver aired by the American news outlet NBC. The six-minute clip narrated by Tom Brokaw gives a broad overview of Canadian politics, landscapes and formative moments in the national memory. Some information about Canada for Americans: https://t.co/EnI8CrF4cB The terse six-word message is the first direct response the prime minister has made to a series of Trump posts about Canada joining the U.S. It follows a post on X by Mark Carney saying it was time to “stand up for Canada.” Trudeau has said little publicly since his finance minister quit on Dec. 16 and several of his MPs have called for him to resign. He is said to be considering his political future over the holidays . Since winning the presidential election in November, Trump has increasingly taunted Trudeau, often referring to him as a governor, equivalent to a state-level American leader on his social media platform, Truth Social. “Their (Canada) Taxes would be cut by more than 60%, their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other Country anywhere in the World,” Trump wrote in his Christmas Day post. The incoming U.S. president has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff against Canada as soon as he takes office in January. Shortly before Trump’s Christmas Day message lambasting Trudeau, he posted a message recalling a conversation with Wayne Gretzky , encouraging him to run for high office. “Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada — You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign,” Trump recalls telling the Canadian hockey great. Trudeau’s comments came just hours after former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney publicly denounced Trump, saying the incoming American president’s remarks about “Governor Justin Trudeau” were “carrying the ‘joke’ too far.” “The casual disrespect, the poor tax math, and ignoring that workers on both sides of our border will be better off if we work together,” Carney wrote on X above a screenshot of Trump’s Christmas Day statement. “Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership.” This is carrying the ‘joke’ too far: the casual disrespect, the poor tax math, and ignoring that workers on both sides of our border will be better off if we work together. Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🇲🇽 https://t.co/BO4zEMrk0B Carney, who was tapped by Trudeau to replace Chrystia Freeland as finance minister , is among the first to publicly condemn the repeated jabs by Trump. Negotiations to join the government between the economist and Trudeau broke down earlier this month, recently appointed Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc confirmed. Senior Liberals have sought to downplay the comments or frame them as well-intentioned jokes. Canada’s ambassador to America, Kirsten Hillman, characterized Trump’s social media posts as ribbing between two close countries. Likewise, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said in early December that she had joked with Republican senators, offering them to join Canada as the eleventh province. Carleton University professor Aaron Ettinger said federal officials have rightly been dismissing the social media posts and maintained a “focus like a laser beam” on the real and “existential threat” of tariffs. “This strikes me as being profoundly unserious,” Ettinger said, who has studied Canada-U.S. relations during the first Trump presidency. “These are taunts; these are churlish provocations that are not mature, and do not reflect just how serious the coming trade war is.” Oh Canada! Donald Trump Truth Social 04:32 PM EST 12/02/24 @realDonaldTrump pic.twitter.com/XyIx7eCVmE Ettinger said Trump is likely continually posting about Canada because it plays well to his supporters, without being seen as a real threat of annexation. “We know his moves. He makes fun of, he belittles, he mocks, because he can,” he said. But he said that a vacuum of leadership in Ottawa from an embattled prime minister is spurring “the freelancing of some of the provincial leaders” in response to Trump’s comments. Donald Trump’s son and close adviser, Eric, weighed in on the ongoing spat as well, sharing a picture on Monday of his father set to purchase Canada, Greenland and Panama Canal in his Amazon cart. “We are so back!!!” the executive vice president of the Trump Organization tweeted. We are so back!!! pic.twitter.com/PvybVULeAz Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state at a dinner meeting with Trudeau on Nov. 29 at Mar-A-Lago, his Flordia coastal estate. “It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!” Trump wrote following their meeting. — With files from The Canadian Press Our website is the place for the latest breaking news, exclusive scoops, longreads and provocative commentary. Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy: A Closer Look at Symptoms, Diagnosis and Clinical Research UnderwayEthiopia and Somalia agree to hold ‘technical talks’ over breakaway Somaliland region[KUALA LUMPUR] As Malaysia gears up to assume the chairmanship of Asean in 2025, the launch of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) stands to underscore the region’s commitment to economic integration and dynamism. Mak Joon Nien, chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, highlighted the longstanding economic ties between Malaysia and Singapore, with Singapore being Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner and Malaysia ranking as Singapore’s third-largest. “The introduction of the SEZ will further strengthen this relationship, and allow both countries to leverage their strengths collaboratively,” said Mak, the first Malaysian CEO of the country’s oldest operating bank, which has been present since 1875. Mak described the SEZ as a “win-win” opportunity, where Malaysia offers key resources such as renewable energy, land and emerging talent, while Singapore contributes technology and expertise. He likens this partnership to a successful marriage. “Much like my wife, who hails from Singapore, and I, from Malaysia, we grow collaboratively by leveraging our individual strengths.” With its strategic vision and collaborative framework, the JS-SEZ holds the promise of unlocking new growth opportunities for Malaysia, Singapore and the broader region. He noted that the SEZ is a game-changer, potentially bolstering both economies and driving strategic cooperation that has a multiplier effect across the region. “Prospects for Asean remain attractive in light of the ongoing global political uncertainties, and the SEZ is well-positioned to capitalise on it, with Malaysia’s 2025 Asean chairmanship providing further impetus,” he said. He envisions the SEZ will drive seamless connectivity between the two countries, which will create a robust and interconnected economic corridor that enhances the movement of goods and people. “For instance, moving goods from Changi to Johor should be no different to moving goods from Changi to Jurong,” he said. Mak acknowledged the Malaysian government’s efforts to support the success of the JS-SEZ. These include realigning Johor’s weekend holidays, the 4-km Rapid Transit System Link, and the introduction of a passport-free immigration clearing QR code system – all of which are improving cross-border movement. The InvestMalaysia portal and Johor Super Lane further showcase the commitment to facilitating investments and trade. However, he noted that the long-term success of the SEZ hinges on the seamless integration of regulatory frameworks, financial incentives, and the free movement of people and goods. “The zone offers a unique proposition. Malaysia will maintain independence in its financial sector, focusing on becoming a regional Islamic banking hub while attracting global business services and family offices to the JS-SEZ, via the special financial zone (in Forest City),” said Mak. For foreign banks such as StanChart, which has deep roots in both Malaysia and Singapore, the anticipated influx of fresh investments and robust economic activity presents a significant opportunity. With operations across 52 markets, StanChart is “well-positioned” to foster cross-border initiatives, such as one-stop banking, and services as a platform for inbound and outbound investment, he added. Since an official memorandum of understanding was signed in Johor Bahru to formalise the establishment of the JS-SEZ in January this year, Johor has garnered strong interest from investors and business owners. For instance, Johor’s property sector has already witnessed steady growth. In the first half of 2024, total property transaction values in Johor rose more than 40 per cent from a year earlier, reaching nearly RM22 billion (S$6.7 billion), dominating Malaysia’s overall transaction value. StanChart Malaysia, meanwhile, received a significant number of inquiries from its international network, said Mak, who is optimistic that this interest will continue to grow. With rising interest from investors and business owners, the JS-SEZ is expected to drive significant economic benefits, including higher income levels and job creation, which will in turn address the persistent brain-drain issue faced by Malaysia. “It will also drive greater cost efficiencies for Singaporean – or other international – businesses operating in the JS-SEZ, as there will be higher margins arising from Malaysia’s lower operating expenses,” he added. The JS-SEZ is expected to drive growth in several key sectors. Among the most promising are the electronics and semiconductors sector; healthcare and wellness; and technology services. He noted that the relocation of supply chains to Johor, particularly for electronics and electric, as well as semiconductor industries, could create a broader ecosystem supporting data centres and high-tech industries. With enhanced accessibility between the two borders, Mak also sees good potential growth for Malaysia’s healthcare and wellness sectors, tapping cost-effective advantages, while advanced healthcare facilities continue to attract medical tourists. Additionally, with Singapore’s ageing population, Johor could become a hub for senior-living and retirement services, he added. Both Malaysia and Singapore have seen substantial investment growth over the past five to 10 years, with Malaysia experiencing strong double-digit increases in total approved investment in 2023. “The establishment of the JS-SEZ will provide clarity and focus for both foreign direct investments and domestic investments across the value chain, facilitating the next phase of growth for both countries,” he added. To continue developing, Singapore must address its capacity constraints and high living costs, which place it among the world’s most expensive cities. He noted that this will involve shifting its business focus towards research, development and services to attract new investments that optimise resources. For Malaysia, the opportunity lies in leveraging its renewable energy, land, and skilled workforce to attract and cultivate new industries – particularly in manufacturing and services. Mak said this strategy will enable Malaysia to diversify its economic portfolio and ascend the value chain, creating a spillover effect that promotes knowledge transfer and employment opportunities, ultimately helping to reverse the brain-drain issue.
