Shock and Awe! Saint-Denis FC Crashes Out in Cup StunnerBalchem Corporation Announces DividendBy Ja'han Jones Pete Hegseth, the politically inexperienced weekend Fox News host whom Trump has tapped to lead the Pentagon, has been embroiled in scandal over the past week. The controversy has largely centered on reports that Hegseth paid off a woman who accused him of sexual assault, while he claims the encounter was consensual. (NBC obtained a copy of the police report ; a spokesperson for Hegseth said, “The incident was fully investigated and police found the allegation to be false, which is why no charges were filed.” The police did not provide a reason for the decision not to file charges.) However, Hegseth’s actual politics have gotten far less attention, and in particular his apparent ties to Christian nationalism. That issue came into focus initially because two of Hegseth’s tattoo are a ssociated with far-right extremist groups (Hegseth has said that the accusation is “ anti-Christian bigotry ”). Hegseth is doing little to dispel the perception of extremism, as earlier this week he called for an “educational insurgency” to take over American schools. As Right Wing Watch flagged , Hegseth made his comments Monday on a right-wing podcast while discussing a book he published in 2022 , in which he and his co-author vowed to give “patriotic parents the ammunition to join an insurgency that gives America a fighting chance” against educators. Hegseth has ties to Christian nationalists , who see religiously affiliated schools — some of which receive public funds — as key to their efforts to blur the line between church and state . On the podcast Monday, Hegseth agreed when one of the hosts suggested Christian schools should be seen as bootcamps to groom children for the so-called insurgency. “That’s what the crop of these classical Christian schools are gonna do in a generation,” Hegseth said. “Policy answers like school choice, while they’re great, that’s phase two stuff later on once the foothold has been taken, once the recruits have graduated boot camp.” Hegseth continued: We call it a tactical retreat. We draw out in the last part of the book what an educational insurgency would look like, because I was a counterinsurgency instructor in Afghanistan and kind of the phases that Mao [Zedong] wrote about: We’re in middle phase one right now, which is effectively a tactical retreat where you regroup, consolidate and reorganize. And as you do so, you build your army underground with the opportunity later on of taking offensive operations in an overt way.” “Obviously, all of this is metaphorical and all that good stuff,” Hegseth added. Ask yourself: In a country where school violence is commonplace, do Americans really need a defense secretary who has promoted a war — figurative or not — on American schools? Consider the message this might send at a time when right-wing religious extremists already portray schools as enemy territory . And then consider how it looks to have the top civilian leader of the United States military affirming their views. It’s typical for defense secretaries to have battle plans, of course, but if he’s confirmed, Hegseth will be unique in that the war he’s most prepared to wage isn’t against a foreign combatant but against institutions and people he’ll be sworn to protect. Ultimately, it was a cakewalk for the debutant Ishank Kumar, son of sitting MP Raj Kumar, as he sealed an emphatic win in Chabbewal trouncing four-time MLA and former minister Sohan Singh Thandal and Congress’s Ranjit Kumar. Ishank Kumar, a doctor, polled 51,904 votes and Ranjit Kumar secured 23,214 votes. The BJP’s Sohan Singh Thandal was a distant third with 8,692 votes, Election Commission data showed. It was the second consecutive win for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha constituency and the fourth victory for MP Raj Kumar’s clan in Chabbewal. Having himself won the LS election in June this year after switching to AAP, the MP pushed for his son’s candidacy and succeeded in getting him the ticket. Raj Kumar has admitted that the party leadership was in a quandary over the allotment of the ticket to his son. But the decision paid off as Ishank won the seat by a margin of 28690 votes, higher than what Raj Kumar had got (a margin of nearly 27,000 votes) in the LS elections from Chabbewal. Despite a low turnout (53.43%), Ishank bagged around 61% of the total votes polled. Opposition had levelled allegations of dynastic politics against AAP and tried to make it an election issue but it did not resonate with the electorate. In fact, the party’s victory can be attributed to Raj Kumar’s sway in the constituency ever since he entered the political arena in 2012. Ishank’s campaign had centred predominantly on his father’s legacy. His mild manners and humility also won him support. Opposition’s hopes to garner the support of Akali Dal and BSP cadre also didn’t pay off. The Akalis decided to opt out of the bypoll contest and the results indicate that their supporters galvanised towards AAP rather than BJP or Congress. The other factor that helped Ishank secure a massive mandate seems to be the delay by the Congress and BJP in naming the candidates. While AAP remained active after the LS election, Congress and BJP oiled their machinery at the eleventh hour. Ranjit Kumar and Sohan Singh Thandal were the last-minute choices of Congress and BJP, respectively. Ranjit Kumar had contested the last LS election on Bahujan Samaj Party ticket and was handpicked by local Congress leadership for the bypoll. Experts feel that if the election had been held one week earlier as per the initial itinerary, Congress’ performance would have been worse as it would not have had any time for campaigning. Thandal left the SAD to contest the election on the BJP ticket but failed miserably. It was his seventh assembly election from the constituency of which he won four, besides having contested the previous Lok Sabha poll from Hoshiarpur. Incidentally, Thandal has lost the last three elections to Raj Kumar and the byelection to his son. In 2017 Raj Kumar won the Chabbewal seat on Congress ticket by a margin of 29, 261 votes. In the following election, his victory margin was reduced to 7,646 mainly because 34.40% of votes went to AAP. In LS elections, he gained a lead of over 27,000 votes in Chabbewal. Ishank Kumar had predicted a higher lead this time around and it came true. He attributed his victory to the ‘hard work’ done by his father as an MLA and an MP and the party’s support. “People have given a verdict in favour of AAP’s policies. My father worked hard for my success. With the help of my voters and supporters, I could win the election”, he said adding that now his priority would be to expedite development projects.
As the Knicks continue their march towards the playoffs, Karl-Anthony Towns' performance against the Raptors will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for the team's confidence and momentum. Towns' ability to deliver in clutch situations and lead by example will be invaluable as the Knicks look to make a deep postseason run.

The scammers are getting better and shoppers are increasingly falling for fake online selling sites as it becomes harder to tell what's real and what's not New research by Avast Malware identifies nearly 80,000 counterfeit websites posing as genuine retailers that are targeting New Zealand shoppers of well-known brands like Pandora, Zara, Swatch and H&M. Netsafe's chief online safety officer Sean Lyons says these sites are set up with one purpose - to make people part with their hard-earned money. "The numbers are really quite significant ... we did some research last year and the year before with the Global Anti-Scam Alliance and they've estimated it could be over $2 billion worth of loss to New Zealanders," he says. But according to Jessica Walker, acting head of research and advocacy at Consumer NZ, that figure could be even higher. "There is no central repository gathering this information, so we know what the big financial institutions are being told but that's only based on what's being reported to them, so we think the figure is likely to be staggeringly high." Walker would like to see New Zealand follow Australia and centralise all the work being done in this area. "Having that one stop shop would make such a difference. It's really hard to know where to go and especially when you have a near miss," she says. "People don't have the time to go looking for where to report it, so they don't, which means more and more people are at risk of being harmed." Scammers can strike at any time of the year, but they really up their game during certain holiday periods. "There's definitely a boost around any time when people are shopping more, so Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there is probably an increase in the number of reports we see and then there's probably an increase in the proliferation of these sites themselves," Lyons says. He adds that scammers rely on people being more rushed and eager to make purchases, because they are less likely to take the time to properly check a website's credibility. With the evolution of technology, it is becoming easier for scammers to scam, and harder for customers to see red flags. "[The scammers] are putting a lot of time and effort into creating these scams, but they're putting a lot of time and effort in because they are profitable endeavours," Lyons says. One green flag many Kiwis look for when checking a website's legitimacy is a .nz domain name. But Domain Name Commissioner Barbara Pearse says that is not necessarily a good marker. It does not even guarantee the website is being operated in New Zealand. "To have a .nz domain name, you don't have to be located in New Zealand or be a New Zealand business, they're available globally," she explains. While online scams occur in less than 1 percent of websites in the .nz domain, Pearse says it is still important to check a site's credibility in other ways. Gurgaon: Forest fires in Haryana more than doubled in a year from 82 recorded in FY 2022-23 to 166 in FY 2023-24 – a finding that experts say must prompt the state's govt to come up with a mitigation plan. According to data from the Indian State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023, farm fires went up in Ambala, Faridabad, Panchkula and Yamunanagar. Others remained largely unaffected. In 2022-23 fiscal year, the report said, there were six forest fires in Ambala. The next year, this figure was 19. Faridabad, which did not record any farm fires in 2022-23, saw 12 the year after. Panchkula saw a six-fold jump from 5 to 29 in the same timeframe. And Yamunanagar recorded nearly a four-fold hike, from 19 in FY 2022-23 to 73 in FY 2023-24. Other districts, among them Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri and Jind, remained untouched by forest fires both the years. ISFR report also noted that most of the state's forested area – 93.9%, or 1,680 sqkm – was not prone to fires. Smaller portions were moderately (4.5%, 79.7 sqkm) and highly (1.6%, 28.9 sqkm) prone. No area was considered highly or extremely prone to forest fires. "The increase in forest fires across various districts, particularly in Ambala, Faridabad, Panchkula and Yamunanagar, highlights the need for immediate action. We are focusing on improving our fire detection systems, increasing patrolling, and raising awareness among local populations to prevent such incidents in the future," a Haryana forest official said on Sunday. Experts said policymakers need to use this data to inform forest management plans and allocate resources effectively. This includes investing in technology for better fire detection systems and responses, and engaging local communities for prevention efforts. "This significant increase in forest fires calls for immediate action to protect these vital ecosystems. It underscores the importance of targeted fire management practices to safeguard the more vulnerable areas and prevent the spread of fires. The fires are mostly in northern areas of Haryana, which is adjoining Himachal Pradesh. Most forest fires are also caused by human actions. Haryana needs to take action to curb the rise of such incidents," said Debadityo Sinha, lead for climate and ecosystems at Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy. Vaishali Rana, an environmental activist, said: "By understanding the patterns and causes of forest fires, the state can better prepare and protect its forests, ensuring they continue to thrive for generations to come."
