Baker Mayfield threw for five touchdowns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stayed in the race atop the NFC South by pounding the visiting Carolina Panthers 48-14 on Sunday afternoon. Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan both caught two TD passes and Bucky Irving rushed for 113 yards as Tampa Bay's second victory of the month against Carolina came much easier than the road version in overtime. Mayfield completed 27 of 32 passes for 359 yards and Evans caught eight balls for 97 yards. The Buccaneers (9-7) collected 551 yards of total offense. The Panthers (4-12) have lost five of their last six despite Bryce Young throwing two touchdown passes to Adam Thielen (five catches, 110 receiving yards). Young finished 15-for-28 passing for 203 yards, but Carolina managed only 39 rushing yards as it played without injured top running back Chuba Hubbard. Both of Mayfield's TD tosses to Evans were short (2 yards, 1 yard). Mayfield's scoring throws to McMillian covered 10 and 16 yards. He also had a 5-yard throw to Payne Durham to open the second-half scoring. The Buccaneers also scored off J. J. Russell's blocked punt return during a 25-second span of the third quarter when they racked up 14 points. Chase McLaughlin kicked field goals of 23 and 34 yards for the Buccaneers, who need to finish with a better record than the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional race because the tiebreaker favors Atlanta, which plays at Washington on Sunday night. Tampa Bay hosts New Orleans next weekend, while Carolina plays at Atlanta. After scoring on its first possession, Carolina's next three series on offense resulted in a total of minus-6 yards and three punts. The Buccaneers cashed in for 17 points following those defensive stops. The Panthers perked up by going 70 yards in 21 seconds to score on Young's 40-yard pass to Theilen with 50 seconds left in the half. They got the ball back following a Tampa Bay punt, and were in position to post 10 points in the last minute of the half until Eddy Pineiro's 53-yard field goal attempt was off the mark. Carolina has surrendered more points this year than in any season in franchise history, though Tampa Bay came four points shy of matching the most points ever allowed by the Panthers in a game. --Field Level MediaNo. 16 Iowa State falls short in Big 12 title game again, this time with CFP at stake

OVP Undersecretary and Vice President Sara Duterte’s chief of staff, Atty. Zuleika Lopez —Inquirer/Grig Montegrande MANILA, Philippines — What is the extent of Congress’ power to detain its resource persons outside their facilities? These questions, for legal experts, could eventually be challenged before the courts in light of the heated standoff between Vice President Sara Duterte and the House of Representatives, which sought to move her chief of staff Zuleika Lopez to the Mandaluyong Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) to serve her contempt citation early Saturday morning. Human rights lawyer Chel Diokno pointed out that while the power of contempt is a “broad power, [whether] and how that power can be exercised could be subject to judicial review.” “The place of detention—that issue may eventually reach the courts,” he said. READ: House panel moves to cite OVP exec Lopez for contempt The power of contempt is an inherent power by Congress to compel witnesses to testify or produce documents during legislative inquiries. It has been popularized recently by the House quad committee investigating criminal activities linked to the Duterte administration. It has cited dozens of resource persons in contempt for lying, refusing to attend, or refusing to answer lawmakers’ questions. Persons cited for contempt are usually held in the House’s 16-person detention facility. However, some resource persons are held in city jails when the facility is full, or in the case of alleged offshore gaming shareholder Cassandra Ong, transferred to the CIW when facing multiple contempt citations. Constitutionalist and policy consultant Michael Henry Yusingco said that while a 2023 Supreme Court ruling clarified the extent of Congress’ contempt powers, the Constitution does not allow it to render a penal punishment. The CIW is a facility for convicted felons, as Lopez pointed out when she resisted being transferred. But the House said they merely wanted to move her to a facility with enough security to handle Duterte, who had insisted on staying with her throughout her detention. Yusingco said Congress does not even have the power to detain persons outside their headquarters “just by the very definition of who they are.” “They are lawmakers, they are not judges. So the proceedings that they do, they are legislative in character and purpose, it’s not a criminal proceeding. And therefore lawmakers cannot render any penal punishment—so they cannot send anyone, detain anyone in a prison,” Yusingco said. This is why, he added, the 2023 ruling was clear about the limitations of the contempt powers of Congress. The ruling said that while Congress is not precluded from compelling its resource persons or witnesses to appear in its proceedings, its powers of legislative investigation are subject to three limitations: 1) it must be in “aid of legislation”; 2) conducted in accordance with its duly published rules of procedures; and 3) the rights of persons appearing in or affected by such inquiries shall be respected. Detention must also only last until the termination of the legislative inquiry, the Supreme Court said. Sought for comment, House Secretary General Reginald Velasco maintained that Lopez was treated well and not subjected to any ill-treatment. After receiving a clean bill of health at VMMC (Veterans Memorial Medical Center), Atty. Lopez was later transported to St. Luke’s Medical Center by OVP (Office of the Vice President) staff for further evaluation. She was declared stable and subsequently returned to VMMC, accompanied by House representatives to ensure her safety,” Velasco said.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: 'It's Definitely Every Canadian's Dream To Play At Home'Looking to buy an underappreciated ASX stock with strong growth potential heading into 2025? Then you may wish to run your slide rule over (ASX: XAO) software solutions company, ( ). That's to ECP Asset Management's Damon Callaghan (courtesy of ). Callaghan said he is bullish on the outlook for Fineos. Although at the moment he said the ASX tech stock is still an "unloved, under-followed technology company". But that may well be set to change. "Fineos is leading in the development of modern core systems software for the life, accident and health insurance industry, in both North America and [Australia and New Zealand]," Callaghan said. He noted that investors may have been put off by the lacklustre financial performance the ASX tech stock has reported in recent years. However, he believes that performance is about to lift off. According to Callaghan, "Over the last five years, a slow deal environment ... makes its backward-looking [profit and loss statement] uncompelling. The business, however, is approaching an inflection point." He pointed to Fineos' new AdminSuite product as something the company's competition will find "extraordinarily difficult to replicate". "It has established a reputation as the software leader among major insurers and has recently developed tier-1 consulting partnerships set to drive new deals," Callaghan added. The ASX tech stock reported its September quarterly on 28 October. Fineos reported a 23% year on year increase in cash receipts from customers to 35.5 million euros. The boost was partly credited to the contribution of revenues from a new name customer. Cash receipts were down 2% from the prior quarter, which management noted had benefited from significant upsell wins. And the September quarter saw the launch of Fineos' AdminSuite, which Callaghan mentioned, at both Guardian and NYL. The ASX tech stock reported a closing cash balance at 30 September of 29.1 million euros. Commenting on the latest quarterly performance, Fineos CEO Michael Kelly said: Pleasingly, we secured another new contract win during the quarter and were able to finalise several important contract renewals. Our pipeline remains healthy and given the significant progress we are making with existing clients moving their business to the Fineos Platform, our growth prospects remain strong. The Fineos share price has gained 19% in a year. Much of that lift has come over the last month, with the ASX tech stock up 36% since 11 November. On Monday, farmers in Punjab staged a statewide bandh, effectively obstructing major roads and disrupting commuter traffic in protest of unmet government demands. This demonstration was organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. The bandh, scheduled from 7 am to 4 pm, witnessed farmers holding sit-ins at several key locations, including the Dhareri Jattan Toll Plaza on the Patiala-Chandigarh National Highway. Entry points like Amritsar's Golden Gate and Bathinda's Rampura Phul bore the brunt of the protest as roads were blocked. Even as the bandh halted normal operations, essential services were allowed to continue with exemptions for emergency cases, such as medical emergencies, airport journeys, and weddings. Meanwhile, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal's hunger strike reached its 35th day, as farmers persisted in their demands, including a legal guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP), debt waivers, and justice for victims of past violence. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s pick for intel chief, faces questions on Capitol Hill amid Syria fallout

Bluesky finds with growth comes growing pains — and botsPresident Joe Biden still believes that President-elect Donald Trump is an existential threat, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed to reporters on Thursday. “It’s been two, you know, more than two weeks since the election. This was an election that elected a man that President Biden has repeatedly referred to as an existential threat. So why is it that the American people have not heard President Biden talk about this threat since the election?” a reporter asked Jean-Pierre, who said the will of the American people has been very clear. “And so the president is now in a situation where we have to deal with a peaceful transfer of power. We have to respect the will of the American people, and that’s what you have been seeing from this president, trying to lead by example, to make sure that that happens,” she said, failing to explain how, exactly, Biden is able to do that if he truly believes Trump is an existential threat. “You know, I’ve been asked about existential threat. I’ve been asked about threat to our democracy. The President is always going to be honest with the American people. He feels like he is obligated. What he said still stands, but we are now in a different place. ... The American people spoke. They deserve a peaceful transfer of power. That’s what this President wants to have,” she continued. When asked if Biden has a message for people who believe that Trump is an existential threat “assuming that he still believes Donald Trump is an existential threat,” Jean-Pierre assured that Biden’s opinion on that has not changed. “His thoughts, what he said, his thinking on that has not changed. It has not,” she said. “And I think he was very clear about what he believes should have been done or how we should move forward.” “He was very clear during those moments he spoke about it. Right now, right now, he wants to lead by example and talk — show the American people what it looks like to have an efficient, effective transfer power, and he believes that is what the American people deserve,” she added. Biden’s aides have reportedly referred to Trump as “Hitler Pig,” and Vice President Kamala Harris referred to Trump as a fascist threat to democracy, also incorporating “dictator” messaging. It remains unclear how they can actually believe that and willfully transfer power to someone they believe is actually Hitler-esque.

Maupay also had a dig at Everton when he departed on loan to Marseille in the summer and his latest taunt has further angered the Premier League club’s supporters. The 28-year-old said on X after Sean Dyche’s side had lost 2-0 to Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on Sunday: “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.” Former boxer Tony Bellew was among the Toffees’ supporters who responded to Maupay, with the ex-world cruiserweight champion replying on X with: “P****!” Maupay endured a miserable spell at Everton, scoring just one league goal in 29 appearances after being signed by the Merseysiders for an undisclosed fee in 2022. He departed on a season-long loan to his former club Brentford for the 2023-24 season and left Goodison for a second time in August when Marseille signed him on loan with an obligation to make the deal permanent. After leaving Everton in the summer, Maupay outraged their fans by posting on social media a scene from the film Shawshank Redemption, famous for depicting the main character’s long fight for freedom.WACO, Texas (AP) — Georgia's Dasha Vidmanova and Columbia's Michael Zheng won NCAA singles tennis titles on Sunday. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — There’s plenty of concern and second-guessing to unpack from how the Bills unraveled on defense, special teams and clock management in their loss to the Los Angeles Rams to wonder whether it was premature labeling Buffalo as Super Bowl contenders only a week earlier. But first, the good news. There’s very little wrong with Buffalo’s Josh Allen-led offense after the quarterback strengthened his NFL MVP case. A week after a four-TD performance that included the statistical anomaly of him scoring two touchdowns on the same play in a 35-10 win over San Francisco, Allen became the NFL’s first player to throw and rush for three scores apiece in 44-42 loss to Los Angeles on Sunday . That Allen's latest superhuman-like effort ended in defeat is what’s troubling for the five-time defending AFC East champions (10-3) in their bid to dispel questions of finding ways to fall short in the playoffs in each of the past five years. Buffalo’s defense had few answers in stopping the Rams’ dynamic attack while allowing a season-high 457 yards. Worse still, the Bills allowed Los Angeles to go 11 of 15 on third down for a 73.3 conversion percentage — the third highest allowed by Buffalo and worst since allowing Miami's 75% conversion rate in 1986. If that’s not bad enough, the Bills lost for the first time in 39 games in which they scored at least 42 points, while becoming the NFL’s second team to lose when scoring 42 or more and not committing a turnover. Special teams didn’t help. Aside from allowing a blocked punt to be returned for a touchdown, the Bills couldn’t muster an attempt to block the Rams’ final punt from midfield with 7 seconds left because they only had nine players on the field. As coach Sean McDermott concluded after finally addressing reporters more than an hour after the game ended: “I thought we lost two of the three phases today.” He failed to mention yet another clock management misstep. Rather than have Allen spike the ball to stop the clock after a failed quarterback keeper from the Rams 1 with 62 seconds remaining, McDermott called timeout. That left Buffalo with two timeouts and essentially relying on the slim chances of recovering an onside kick after Allen scored on his next attempt. McDermott defended his decision by saying he feared too much time would elapse before the Bills aligned for another snap. And yet, it would not have matched the 45 seconds the Rams ran off on their final possession after Buffalo used its final two timeouts. Together, these are the types of miscues that have haunted the Bills in their recent playoff losses. The bright side is the loss to the Rams didn’t end the Bills’ season, though they fell two games behind Kansas City (12-1) in the race for the AFC’s top seed . And perhaps, the loss can be chalked up to a team riding a little too high off a playoff-clinching win and having to travel across the country to face a Rams team in the thick of its divisional race. If that’s so, the Bills have a chance to address their flaws — and doubters — by how they respond in what still stands as a juicy showdown at the NFC-leading Detroit Lions (12-1) on Sunday. “They’re the top dog in football right now,” Allen said, looking ahead to Detroit. “We have to have a good week, learn from this one, and put it behind us.” Scoring. The Bills topped 30 points for a team-record seventh consecutive game and ninth time this season. Buffalo entered the day ranked second in the NFL averaging 30.5 points per outing, behind Detroit (32.1). Run defense. Though the Rams averaged just 3.3 yards per carry, they stuck with it in finishing with 137 yards, helping them enjoy a 17-minute edge in time of possession. Allen. If not for him, the Bills wouldn't have been in position to nearly overcome a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit. His 424 yards (342 passing and 82 rushing) accounted for all but 21 yards of Buffalo's total offense. With so many options, perhaps the focus falls on special teams coordinator Matthew Smiley. This is the second time in 13 months special teams personnel management became an issue. Buffalo was flagged for having too many men as time expired, providing Wil Lutz a second chance to hit a decisive field goal in sealing Denver's 24-22 win last season . Starting CB Rasul Douglas was sidelined by a knee injury. ... DE Casey Toohill injured his ribs. 80-1-1 — The Bills' record when scoring 38 or more points, including a 38-38 tie with Denver in 1960. Facing Detroit represents Buffalo's final major test before closing the season with two games against New England and hosting the New York Jets. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
