magical oceans Most skin diseases are unpleasant to live with, but hidradenitis suppurativa is one that can become much more than just uncomfortable and unattractive. While other skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis can also become severe and significantly impact your quality of life, hidradenitis suppurativa —also known as HS or acne inversa—has the potential to become extremely painful, socially debilitating, and even life-threatening. That’s why if you think you have HS, it’s so important to visit a dermatologist (or other qualified healthcare provider ) to explore treatment options. It’s also important to understand both the milder and more serious symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa, as well as the lifestyle changes that can help you stay in control of this challenging (and non-curable) skin disease. To begin with the basics, hidradenitis suppurativa is a skin disease that experts think originates with an overactive immune system, which leads to excessive inflammation around sweat glands and hair follicles. The first sign that someone has HS is usually a smattering of red, painful lesions on certain areas of the body, often the armpits, inner thighs, buttocks, or groin area. These may be mistaken for pimples at first, then grow larger and much more painful. HS flare-ups may involve a combination of blackheads, firm nodules, and softer abscesses—pus-filled cysts under the skin that can sometimes break open and release foul-smelling liquid. In severe cases, affected areas may also develop sinus tracts, tunnels that form underneath the skin. If left untreated, HS can lead to serious health problems. Here are some of the scarier complications that can arise for people living with HS, plus tips on how to stay healthy and maintain a better quality of life if you have this relatively common skin disease. Blood infections and sepsis One way in which HS can quickly get dangerous: If bacteria get trapped in a clogged, inflamed hair follicle, this can lead to an infection that can spread to the skin or blood. In extreme cases, people with HS develop sepsis, a rare but life-threatening complication in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. Symptoms include high fever, trouble breathing, and low blood pressure and require a trip to the emergency room. Another condition to look out for: An infection of the skin called cellulitis, which involves red streaks, pain, and fever. To help avoid these complications, always avoid squeezing HS lesions, and use proper wound care (below). Cancer A rare but real complication of severe HS: If inflammation in the skin is allowed to continue uncontrolled for years, this can lead to skin cancer and other cancers. People with HS have a 50 percent higher risk of getting cancer, according to a 2024 research review in the journal Annals of Medicine . One specific risk to be aware of: Long-lasting, untreated HS lesions can turn into a cancer called squamous cell carcinoma , the second most common form of skin cancer. It is curable if diagnosed and treated promptly; your dermatologist can provide careful screening. A treatment plan for HS that includes medications like biologics can help fight inflammation to help prevent the increase in cancer risk associated with this skin disease. Heart attacks and stroke People with HS also have an increased risk of experiencing serious cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes, according to a study published in 2019 in the journal JAMA Dermatology . This is again a result of the chronic inflammation involved with hidradenitis suppurativa. People with HS are also at a much higher risk of having metabolic syndrome, a disorder that can lead to complications like cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, according to research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology . Inflammatory bowel disease Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBS, is a general term for conditions that involve chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. People with HS appear significantly more likely to develop IBS, according to a study published in 2019 in the journal JAMA Dermatology . If you have HS and frequently experience symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or bloody stool, it’s important to make an appointment with a gastroenterologist to get a diagnosis and treatment plan. Staying Healthy With Hidradenitis Suppurativa The good news: There are lots of steps you can take to keep yourself healthy while living with HS. Proper wound care is important to relieve pain and prevent infections that can lead to serious health problems. Open abscesses should be gently cleaned, after which you can apply a topical antibiotic (ask your healthcare provider for recommendations) and a sterile, non-adhesive dressing, to promote faster healing. Your skincare routine can involve using an antiseptic cleanser, to help kill bacteria that contribute to symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa, as well as infections. Certain lifestyle changes can help minimize the symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa and prevent longer-term complications. A big one is committing to maintaining a healthy weight; obesity puts you at a higher risk of developing HS, and weight loss has the potential to reduce the severity of flare-ups or even put the skin disease into remission. Same goes for smoking—quitting is a lifestyle change with major potential to minimize symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa (not to mention benefit your overall skin health, and health in general). A State-level party has, yet again, caused a roadblock for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While details fit into the jigsaw puzzle of explaining victories and losses, the big picture presented by Jharkhand has two key elements. First, it was about the tenacity and the ability of State-level forces to face and respond to all-India intrusions and, second, the tough competition between regional identity-based politics centred around Adivasis vis-à-vis an attempt to draw in Adivasis toward a set of aggressive and all-India concerns that are centred on cultural identity. Jharkhand Assembly elections 2024: Full coverage The two sides At the tactical level, the emphatic victory of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance was a victory: of effective coalition management and of a campaign that focused on issues that struck a chord with voters. But beyond that, Jharkhand saw a clear competition between two alternative narratives. The JMM-led government was defending its track record in governance and its image of representing tribal interests. The BJP-led alliance sought to present a wider narrative to try and appeal to a wider cross-section and aggressively attack the incumbent government on non-performance and high levels of corruption. The BJP’s narrative also had a strong dose of Hindutva mobilisation that sat awkwardly with the Adivasis of Jharkhand’s many tribal groups. The results indicate that the JMM alliance was able to hold on to its tribal vote and make inroads in non-tribal areas on account of its alliance with the Congress. While the BJP did well in the non-tribal belt, it was not able to make deeper inroads in tribal areas. In the winning alliance, the JMM was the leader, winning 80% of the seats it contested. The Congress clearly benefited from being the junior alliance partner, securing a strike rate of just over 50%. The Lokniti-CSDS survey (see methodology) provides some indications of what contributed to the INDIA coalition’s win. While it scored in terms of better coordination within the alliance which brought together a diverse social coalition and support across regions, the NDA coalition depended largely on the BJP’s efforts. There was a much fairer distribution of seats within the INDIA coalition while the NDA saw the BJP contest seven of every 10 seats. The INDIA coalition’s united message worked to its advantage. It won support across age groups, did very well in rural areas, drew strong support from the poor and middle classes and the less educated, and finally, built a social coalition of support that included key segments among the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes, Muslims and Yadavs. The diverse nature of its social coalition reflected the impact of the different parties in the coalition which included the JMM, the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Communist parties. Voters and polarisation The Lokniti-CSDS survey clearly indicates the strong levels of polarisation among voters. Two thirds of them who were fully satisfied with the Soren government, voted for the INDIA coalition. On the other hand, two thirds of those fully dissatisfied with the incumbent government voted for the NDA, suggesting that more than satisfaction, voters’ prior decision to vote for a particular coalition was crucial. While net satisfaction with the Narendra Modi government was much higher than that with the Soren government, the fact that this was a State election seemed to matter. The support for the party was clearly central to the voting decision, with more than half the respondents saying they cast their vote keeping in mind the party concerned. Data indicate that voters were not very happy with the development record on the ground. They believed that the state of industrialisation and corruption had worsened in the past five years, while the situation regarding communal violence and naxalism had improved. Yet, two factors need to be considered. First, those who highlighted unemployment, poverty, inflation and the lack of development as factors continued to invest in the INDIA coalition. Second, women voters seem to have favoured the INDIA coalition in larger numbers. The impact of the Maiya Samman Yojana appeared to be a factor. Role of leaders Yet another factor aiding the INDIA coalition was the perception among voters that State-level issues were central to this election. More than half of those who took this stand favoured the winning coalition. On the other hand, just one in every 10 persons who believed that State issues mattered voted for NDA candidates. The impact of national leaders in supporting the coalition they led was also visible. Most of those who voted for the BJP endorsed the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in their voting choice. Similarly, when reflecting on the role of Rahul Gandhi, supporters of the INDIA coalition clearly highlighted his impact. Hemant Soren was the preferred Chief Minister choice of one-thirds of the respondents. Thus, while the BJP banked largely on the charisma of Mr. Modi, the INDIA coalition had a combination of national- and State-level leaders who contributed to heightened support for its candidates. Thus, the victory of the INDIA coalition was closely linked to the support enjoyed by the JMM in the tribal pockets and the corollary support from its alliance partners in non-tribal areas. It scored over the NDA in securing support across key demographic indicators. Though there was a strong perception of increased corruption under the incumbent government, it was still voted back as other key factors emerged as key influencers determining voter choice. The BJP did try to mobilise voters on issues of the Uniform Civil Code and Bangladeshi infiltrators, but voters were more concerned with their local identity issues — as is seen from the strong feeling voters expressed on the question of Sarna identity. Except for the Santhal community, the BJP was not able to attract many among other Adivasi groups. In the long run, the challenge for the BJP will be to connect with Adivasis. How it manages that with its overall ambition to also popularise Hindutva will decide the future course of political competition in the State. A role reversal doomed the No. 22 Xavier Musketeers in their only loss of the season, against Michigan at the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Wednesday. Normally a team that avoids committing turnovers and pressures its opponent into making them, Xavier (6-1) will try to recapture its early-season winning form when it hosts South Carolina State on Sunday in Cincinnati. Through their six wins, the Musketeers had just 58 turnovers while forcing 82 by their opponents. But against the Wolverines, they lost the turnover battle 19-10 and the game 78-53. The Musketeers committed 14 turnovers in the first half and fell behind 41-30. Xavier head coach Sean Miller credited his team for typically playing an up-tempo style while avoiding mistakes, while also acknowledging that the turnover bug really bit them against the Wolverines. "We lost to a really good team; no shame in that," Miller said. "We, on top of that, didn't play well." "And that (avoiding turnovers) is something you (usually) do well? CLEVELAND — With snow falling, Nick Chubb plowed forward. On a play that looked eerily similar to the one in Pittsburgh last year that threatened to end his career, Chubb kept his legs moving and pushed his way into the end zone for a touchdown he and his teammates won't forget. Chubb ran for a 2-yard touchdown w ith 57 seconds left, and the Cleveland Browns stunned one of their division rivals on Thursday night, beating the Steelers 24-19 and ending their five-game winning streak. Chubb's score came in his first game against the AFC North-leading Steelers (8-3) since the running back sustained a season-ending left knee injury in Week 2 last September in a Monday night game against the Steelers. Chubb, who had injured the same knee while playing at Georiga in 2015, had to endure grueling rehab sessions to make it back on the field, and the sight of him scoring against the dreaded Steelers was almost poetic. “It meant a lot to me. I know it means a lot to him,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks. “He won’t say it, but it’s true. I’ll say it because this time last year we were sick to our stomachs. There was just so much in the air, so for him to come back and be pivotal in this game just speaks to the kind of resilience and the man that he is. That was a statement I was intending to make and I think I made.” Garrett set up Cleveland’s second score with a strip-sack of Wilson. These are the 2024 Seahawks, who, after struggling mightily against the run earlier this season, held the visiting Arizona Cardinals to 49 rushing yards in Sunday's 16-6 victory . The defensive line kept Kyler Murray under consistent pressure thanks to a dominant performance from Leonard Williams, the secondary flew around to smack away passes, and safety Coby Bryant scored on a 69-yard pick-6. Sunday's defensive performance was reminiscent of the Seahawks of a decade ago and a promising sign that first-year coach Mike Macdonald’s system is starting to click. Macdonald, who coordinated Baltimore's NFL-best defense last year, was leading one of the worst rush defenses in the league earlier this season. But Seattle consistently stuffed the Cardinals, who came in as the fifth-best running team in the league at 149.4 yards per game. “Three games in a row now we played pretty decent on defense,” Macdonald said. “There is an expectation and standard here throughout the course of our Seahawks history that we’re trying to live up to and build on. So that’s the idea.” At 6-5, the Seahawks drew even with the Cardinals in the tightly bunched division. The teams play each other again in two weeks at Arizona. Last month's trade for linebacker Ernest Jones IV has clearly paid off. Seattle hasn't allowed a running back to rush for more than 79 yards since its Week 8 loss to Buffalo, which was Jones' first game in a Seahawks uniform. He has led the team in tackles in every game he's played and has helped resurrect the run defense. The Seahawks' run game continues to underperform. Seattle got 65 yards on the ground Sunday, with the Cardinals holding Kenneth Walker III to 41 yards on 16 attempts. Zach Charbonnet had 22 yards on six carries. Walker hasn’t topped 100 yards since Week 1. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb needs to think of something different to get the running backs involved. Williams single-handedly disrupted the Cardinals with 2 1/2 sacks, four quarterback hits, three tackles for loss and one pass defensed. “I thought he was dominant,” Macdonald said. “I knew he played great and then I looked at the stat line and he played out of his mind.” The Seahawks finished with five sacks, seven quarterback hits, five tackles for loss and six pass deflections against the Cardinals, shutting down a team that had averaged 29.3 points over its previous three games. Geno Smith finished with 254 yards passing and a touchdown, but he threw another momentum-stalling interception. Smith was picked off on a third-and-6 play on the Arizona 18-yard line at the start of the fourth quarter, ending an 11-play, 73-yard drive. Smith has an NFL-most 12 interceptions this season, more than in either of his previous two seasons as the Seahawks' full-time starter. “That was a huge drive for us. ... Obviously made a terrible mistake down there, something I got to clean up,” Smith said. “But it was a big drive. We wanted to put the game ahead at least two scores.” The offensive line has contributed to the problem. Guard Anthony Bradford left with an ankle injury, and the line struggled to protect Smith, who was sacked five times.
