US politicians on both sides have reacted to news that former US President Jimmy Carter, who as president brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, has died at age 100. Login or signup to continue reading Here are some of the immediate comments. PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND FIRST LADY JILL BIDEN "Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian. Over six decades, we had the honour of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what's extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well." US PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP "The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers." FORMER US PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON AND FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON "From his commitment to civil rights as a state senator and governor of Georgia; to his efforts as President to protect our natural resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, make energy conservation a national priority, return the Panama Canal to Panama, and secure peace between Egypt and Israel at Camp David; to his post-Presidential efforts at the Carter Centre supporting honest elections, advancing peace, combating disease, and promoting democracy; to his and Rosalynn's devotion and hard work at Habitat for Humanity—he worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world." US SENATOR MITCH MCCONNELL "Elaine and I join the Senate and the nation in mourning the passing of our 39th president, Jimmy Carter." "President Carter served during times of tension and uncertainty, both at home and abroad. But his calm spirit and deep faith seemed unshakeable. Jimmy Carter served as our commander-in-chief for four years, but he served as the beloved, unassuming Sunday school teacher at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia for forty. And his humble devotion leaves us little doubt which of those two important roles he prized the most." US HOUSE SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON "Today, the thoughts of Americans and the prayers of Congress are lifted up on behalf of the Carter family. President Carter's story was one of humble beginnings, and his life is a testament to the boundless opportunities available in this great nation. Because of his work in brokering the Camp David Accords and his advocacy with Habitat for Humanity, the world is a more peaceful place, and more Americans have a place to call home. No one can deny that President Carter led an extraordinary life of service to his country. May he rest in peace." US REPRESENTATIVE MIKE TURNER "I am deeply saddened to learn about the death of President Jimmy Carter. President Carter was a man of integrity who was guided by his faith. I join all Americans in saluting President Carter for his lifetime of service, first as a naval officer, then as a senator in the Georgia State Senate, then as Governor of Georgia, and, finally, as President of the United States. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the Carter family." US SENATOR MARK WARNER "President Carter will be remembered by what he built and left behind for us – a model of service late into life, a tireless devotion to family and philanthropy, and a more peaceful world to call home." There are not many things Kolkata does really well, but Christmas is certainly one of them. For the past couple of decades, hotels, malls, stores and other select venues around urban India have been decking their halls with boughs of holly, putting up Christmassy decorations including trees, gingerbread houses, Santas and sleighs. And turkey, mince pies and plum cakes are also assiduously promoted. But in Calcutta/Kolkata, it's a more universal celebration. ET Year-end Special Reads Two sectors that rose on India's business horizon in 2024 2025 outlook: Is it time for cautious optimism or rekindling animal spirits? 2024: Govt moves ahead with simultaneous polls plan; India holds largest democratic exercise For those unfamiliar with Calcutta's Christmas-or Kolkata's Krismas, if you will-this may not seem a particularly enlightening assertion. But those who have experienced it will agree that Christmas is no recent import of a 'globalised' India in what was once "the second city of the (British) Empire" but a very organic fiesta, which people from all walks of life mark in their own way. And so it has been from the time that the British sahibs ruled India from Calcutta. India's other two 'Presidency' cities, Bombay and Madras-now Mumbai and Chennai-also have a tradition of Christmas celebrations that can be traced back to their equally old colonial roots. But the Yuletide festivities in those cities have not remained (or even become) as widespread as Calcutta's even though it is now Kolkata. Today, Krismas is a British legacy that has been successfully Kolkatised and its different manifestations reflect separate aspects of the city. The 'Christmas' of the sahibs lives on in the city's many colonial era clubs. There, the elites-barristers, boxwallahs, planters, (or their current avatars), bureaucrats, politicians and others-not all of them Bengalis but certainly Calcuttans, congregate in their winter finery to quaff fine wines and spirits, and tuck into cold cuts, Christmas turkey, ham and plum cake as a band belts out seasonal favourites. Five star hotels mimic those festivities, with higher price tags. But most Kolkatans cannot aspire to clubs and five-stars. Yet the whole city is part of the celebrations. Not only is Kolkata's iconic Park Street ablaze with lights that put London's Christmas decor to shade, other major roads and even smaller lanes are also lit up. The themes are not just western Christmassy motifs like stars, bells, bows and angels; there are also distinctly desi parrots, peacocks, paans, kalashes (pots), fountains etc, making for a very "meri" Krismas. Midnight Mass at churches see congregants that far outnumber the city's Anglo-Indians and Christians. The sale of plum cakes (admittedly of varying authenticity) from local bakeries is brisk, and Christmas trees, baubles and Santa costumes are sold at every street corner, although no longer in the central rotunda of New Market. Krismas (X-mas) is for everyone. And the thousands of Kolkatans who throng the streets around and on Burra Din have not gleaned their idea of Christmas recently off the internet; 99% of them are not Christian either. Most of them crowd Kolkata's gaily bedecked streets during the year-end holidays to carry on a much-loved tradition passed down by their forebears-of dressing up and going out to admire the lights, eating, drinking and singing in the very agreeably nippy winter weather. Kolkata has lost much in the century since the focus-and the Raj-shifted to New Delhi, but its unique Christmas spirit has not diminished. After spending many Christmases in Calcutta over the years I feel that while Durga Puja celebrations emphasise the city's vibrant Bengaliness, UNESCO should recognise the unmistakably kinetic Krismas in Kolkata as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity too.Trump offers a public show of support for Pete Hegseth, his embattled nominee to lead the Pentagon

The Biden administration has imposed sanctions on the founder of Georgia’s ruling political party, which has steered the country away from a pro-Western stance and towards Russia, US officials said. The US State and Treasury departments said they hit Georgian Dream party founder and honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili with penalties “for undermining the democratic and Euro-Atlantic future of Georgia for the benefit of the Russian Federation”, according to a statement. The designation of Mr Ivanishvili is the latest in a series of sanctions the US has placed on Georgian politicians and others this year. Those sanctions include freezes on assets and properties those targeted may have in US jurisdictions or that might enter US jurisdictions as well as travel bans on the targets and members of their families. “The United States is committed to promoting accountability for those undermining democracy and human rights in Georgia.” Mr Ivanishvili is a billionaire who made his fortune in Russia and served briefly as Georgia’s prime minister. In 2012, he founded Georgian Dream, Georgia’s longtime ruling party. Critics have accused Georgian Dream of becoming increasingly authoritarian and tilted towards Moscow. The party recently pushed through laws similar to those used by the Kremlin to crack down on freedom of speech and LGBT+ rights, prompting the European Union to suspend Georgia’s membership application process indefinitely. In October, Georgian Dream won another term in a divisive parliamentary election that has led to more mass protests. Last month, the country’s prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced a four-year suspension of talks on Georgia’s bid to join the European Union, fuelling further public outrage.
Gore-Tex maker sued over pollution from toxic ‘forever chemicals’The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has directed oil marketers to halt petrol imports, counting on the Dangote Refinery to meet the country’s fuel demands. According to BusinessDay, this mandate was disclosed at a high-level meeting in Abuja, attended by NNPC Group CEO Mele Kyari, representatives of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), and other key stakeholders. NNPC declared that all petrol supplies would now hinge on clearance from the Dangote Refinery, which reportedly has the capacity to cater to Nigeria’s fuel needs. This refinery, operational since January 2024, has produced diesel, jet fuel, and other products mainly for international markets. Join Tekedia Capital Syndicate and i nvest in Africa’s finest startups here . Recently, it began supplying petrol domestically, adhering to premium quality standards of 10ppm sulfur content, a significant improvement over the 50ppm standard previously dominant in Nigeria. While the refinery’s capacity is significant, oil marketers have questioned its ability to handle Nigeria’s fluctuating fuel demand reliably. Additionally, marketers raised concerns about the refinery’s payment structure, which requires advance payment—unlike the traditional post-delivery settlement model. This shift could strain the liquidity of smaller players in the downstream sector. BusinessDay quoted one marketer as saying, “Paying upfront significantly increases financial pressure, especially for businesses with limited capital.” The quality of Dangote’s fuel has introduced a price differential compared to imported alternatives, which typically have a higher sulfur content (50 ppm). While Dangote’s product aligns with global standards, some marketers have reportedly undercut its prices by sourcing cheaper, lower-quality imports, exacerbating market challenges. Dangote Refinery has accused these activities of distorting the market and even threatened legal action against NNPC for continued fuel imports. Mele Kyari recently stated that the NNPC had ceased fuel imports and was sourcing products exclusively from domestic refineries. However, this claim faced scrutiny as documents revealed significant fuel importation volumes between October and November 2024. The NNPC clarified that Kyari’s statement was taken out of context, explaining that while it prioritizes local refineries, importation remains an option when economically viable. However, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), announced earlier this week that it has reached an agreement with Dangote Refinery for fuel supply. As part of this significant agreement, the refinery will supply 60 million liters of petrol each week to IPMAN. This partnership could see the association receiving up to 240 million liters of petrol monthly. While the directive underscores the government’s reliance on the Dangote Refinery to stabilize Nigeria’s fuel supply, a giant obstacle stands in the way. Challenges surrounding crude oil supply to the refinery have cast doubt on the viability of this initiative. The success of this policy hinges on uninterrupted crude oil supply to the Dangote Refinery. However, The NNPC has struggled to meet its obligations under its stock agreement with the refinery. Dangote Refinery recently disclosed that the NNPC is failing to fulfill its crude oil supply commitments, especially under the much-publicized naira-for-crude agreement. This arrangement was designed to ensure that the NNPC supplies crude oil to the refinery in exchange for naira payments, a system projected to save Nigeria up to $8 trillion annually. Unfortunately, these supply disruptions have forced the Dangote Refinery to procure crude oil from international markets, including the United States, paying in dollars—a practice that undermines the purpose of the agreement. The decision to prioritize Dangote Refinery is expected to bolster the naira in the foreign exchange market by reducing the demand for dollars typically needed by importers. Curbing the dollar demand associated with petrol importation was touted as a way the naira’s performance in the FX market could stabilize. Analysts project that this directive could significantly lower Nigeria’s annual dollar outflows, allowing more resources to be channeled toward other economic priorities. Stakeholders are expressing concern about the sustainability of the directive, given the refinery’s operational challenges. Market experts worry that inconsistent crude oil supply and the refinery’s financial pressures could disrupt the envisioned stability in Nigeria’s fuel market. The failure of the naira-for-crude agreement not only threatens Nigeria’s FX goals but also risks destabilizing the refinery’s pricing and distribution plans. If crude oil procurement costs remain high, it may lead to higher petrol prices, further straining consumers already grappling with economic hardship.
Structure must follow strategy, and there are two strategies we must implement effectively if agriculture is to have a prosperous new year. The first is the clustering and consolidation of our farmers (with an average 1.3-hectare farm size) to achieve economies of scale. The second is the delivery of agriculture extension services to farmers and fisherfolk. They have lacked these services since they were devolved to the local government units (LGUs) because of the Local Government Code of 1991. The two structures needed to implement these two strategies are the Bureaus of Cooperative Development and of Agriculture Extension. If these cannot be realized, the DA must at least create offices that will be adequately funded to fulfill these bureaus’ major functions. READ: The DA as a pillar of nutrition efforts Last Dec. 22, these recommendations were given during the last regular meeting of the Agrifisheries Alliance (AFA) with Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. AFA is composed of three coalitions for the three major agriculture sectors—farmers and fisherfolk (Alyansa Agrikultura or AA), agribusiness (Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. or PCAFI) and science and academe (Coalition of Agriculture Modernization in the Philippines or CAMP). PCAFI covers commodity issues, for which there are added monthly reports from the DA-organized 10-member commodity councils starting next month. These commodity-specific concerns are supplemented by AFA cross-cutting and policy recommendations, such as the two identified here. Recognizing the value of cooperatives, Thailand changed the name of its agriculture ministry in 1972 to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The addition of this emphasis resulted in impressive achievements. Last year, Thailand recorded $61.4 billion in agriculture exports, 10 times our $6.4 billion. It is double our overseas remittance of $33.5 billion, which we need to get at great cost to our family and social lives. Last Sept. 3, Tiu Laurel created the Agriculture Cooperative Enterprise Development (Aced) Services. He stated: “By adopting modern farming technologies and enhancing food security and agricultural exports, we are taking first steps toward a more productive and sustainable sector.” AFA leaders added that if the cooperative structure is not appropriate for a specific situation, Aced can promote other forms such as cooperatives and associations. In fact, the DA is doing this with its Farmer and Fisheries Clustering and Consolidation (F2C2) program. The F2C2’s goal is “to achieve economies of scale and capacity building for farmers, such as business plan preparation, financial management and enterprise operation.” Though F2C2 and Aced work jointly, there is still a lack of authority and resources, resulting in limited gains. A Bureau of Cooperative Development must be established to solve this deficiency. We now have 11.2 million agriculture extension workers. However, this statement may be deceptive. In reality, the great majority of these workers are not doing their jobs properly. When this service was devolved to the LGUs, the staff were not given the necessary guidance and technology transfer. In fact, many were unqualified and did nonagriculture work. The Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Service (Pafes) is a program originally proposed by CAMP and approved by the DA to address this problem. Its objective is to have the focus of extension at the provincial level. This is correct, for this is where the unique needs are best known. However, the DA does not have authority over these extension workers. Aside from the DA giving more support to Pafes, AA recommended that there should be one DA extension worker for every 10 barangays to have a direct line to DA. It was stated that 10,000 out of their more than 50,000 personnel will now do this. Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address. I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . However, this again is not enough. A well-funded Bureau of Agriculture Extension with authority should be created to ensure DA programs are implemented properly in the barangays. To implement the two critical strategies identified here, the structures of the Bureau of Cooperative Development and Agriculture Extension should immediately be created.

EWS land housing buyback: SAD demands probeFormer Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visits to Andhra Pradesh left a lasting impact, particularly through his initiatives aimed at empowering rural communities and boosting the state’s industrial and defence sectors. One of his most significant contributions was the launch of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA) in 2009 at Bandameedapalli in Anantapur district. The scheme provided guaranteed wages to farm labourers, particularly in drought-prone regions like Rayalaseema, preventing mass migration to cities during difficult seasons. This initiative has since helped numerous small farmers and rural families across the country. N Raghuveera Reddy, former minister, recalled the importance of this scheme, noting that it allowed farmers and labourers to remain in their villages with secure wages, particularly during dry spells. The project remains a successful tool for addressing rural poverty and unemployment. In Visakhapatnam, Singh’s impact is also significant. On July 26, 2009, he launched India’s first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arihant, at the Ship Building Centre, marking a milestone in the nation’s defence capabilities. This event, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Vijay Diwas, underscored India’s growing strength in defence technology. Singh’s presence in Visakhapatnam was a defining moment for the city’s industrial future as well. Earlier, in May 2009, Singh laid the foundation stone for the expansion of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, which had a capacity of 6.5 million tonnes. Singh highlighted Visakhapatnam’s potential to become a special economic region and attract significant investment, including his support for an international airport and a Mass Rapid Transit System. These steps were crucial in shaping the port city into a major industrial hub.
Laurie Baratti | (TNS) TravelPulse As the holidays approach, travelers hoping for smooth journeys will want to know at which U.S. airports the weather most often wreaks havoc. A recent analysis by Upgraded Points, using data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, revealed which airports are most likely to experience weather-related delays from November through January. Related Articles The right book can inspire the young readers in your life, from picture books to YA novels Holiday gift ideas for the movie lover, from bios and books to a status tote These holiday gifts change the game when building fires, printing photos, watching birds and more Beer pairings for your holiday feasts Best (and worst) Black Friday deals of 2024 The analysis identifies five major U.S. airports that regularly see high numbers of weather-related delays during the holiday months. These airports, which include both coastal and northern hubs, are vulnerable to various weather disruptions, from heavy rains and fog to snow and icy conditions. Travelers flying through these locations should be prepared for longer waits and potential rescheduling. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) tops the list, with a striking 42.3% of holiday delays caused by weather. December is particularly challenging at SFO, where over half of all delays in that month (50.5%) are weather-related, often due to rain and fog. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) follows closely, with 42.1% weather-related delays, driven by the frequent winter storms that hit the East Coast. LaGuardia Airport (LGA), an East Coast hub, ranks third with 38.3% of delays attributed to inclement weather, reflecting the challenges of winter travel in the Northeast. In Seattle, November rain and fog are common, contributing to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s (SEA) 38.1% weather-delay rate. Rounding out the top five, Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS) has a 31.3% weather-delay rate, which spikes during the city’s harsh winter season. For travelers looking to avoid weather-related delays, several U.S. airports typically experience fewer disruptions during the holiday months. Warm coastal climates and reliably milder weather conditions help keep these airports running smoothly. With a low weather-related delay rate of 11%, Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is the most reliable option for those aiming for hassle-free holiday travel. Thanks to Hawaii’s tropical climate, flights here face few weather disruptions even during peak travel periods. Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) are close behind, each with around 12% of delays attributed to weather. Meanwhile, Dallas Love Field (DAL), San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Miami International Airport (MIA) all see weather-related delays at rates under 13.5%, making them solid options for travelers seeking smoother travel experiences. 1.
