y64t4be.c60 Shopian, Nov 22: A recent snowfall along the heritage Mughal Road turned the entire area into a wonderland. The snow covered pine trees dotting the awe- inspiring mountains offer a spell-casting view in different hues of season. However, amidst this natural beauty, the halting stations—Sukh Saria and Aliabad Sarai—along the road, which have always been a major attraction for the tourists and travellers, remain in a state of disrepair. These crumbling halting stations reflect the government’s apathy and neglect in preserving the cultural heritage. Located at an altitude of 2700 meters, barely a 40-minute drive from Shopian town, the Sukh Sarai is a Mughal marvel. The halting station occupies a vast 9,600 square feet and is situated in the middle of a serene meadow. This Mughal era mud, brick and stone structure is lying in a run-down state with its entrance walls completely damaged. A short drive away along the road is located Alibad Sarai. The rectangular is situated on the banks of the River Panchal. The Sarai was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and was later restored by Emperor Jahangir through his Governor Ali Mardan Khan. The halting station was among the 14 such structures from Delhi to Lahore enroute to Srinagar. The Saria was designated as a monument under the central protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and managed according to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act of 1958. However, the dilapidated and decaying Sarai, which is now covered by thick overgrown vegetation, speaks volumes of the government’s indifference. “The authorities are hardly bothered about preserving our heritage. It has been our long-standing demand to initiate steps to protect these historic monuments,” said Mitha Gatoo, a social activist from the area. Gatoo said that civil society members took up the matter with higher authorities umpteen times but nothing was done about it. He said that preserving such sites would not only help the next generation connect with their history, but also give a boost to the local economy. The Department of Culture launched a scheme aimed at revival, restoration and preservation, maintains and of the architecture and heritage in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021. The Sarai was included in the scheme, but nothing has been done so far. An official, however, said that District Development Commissioner, Shopian Mohammad Saleem Shahid Dar convened a high-level meeting of officials including officials from the ASI and forest department, to discuss the preservation and restoration of the glory of these Sarais. He said that a host of possibilities were discussed to preserve these monuments. “Some eco-friendly steps will be initiated to build an approach to Aliabad Saria,” added the official.

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) may be in line for another job — this time working for a Democratic megadonor. Politico reported the eyebrow-raising news Wednesday, noting that John Morgan is in active discussions to have the one-time attorney general nominee join his Florida law firm of Morgan & Morgan . The gig would be in addition Gaetz's new role — only announced this week — as a primetime host on the right-wing One America News Network. That role is expected to begin next month. "A lot of the things that my politics are, Matt Gaetz’s are," Morgan told the publication, adding that Gaetz could prove useful in a recent lawsuit his firm filed that accuses large food companies of manipulating their products to be more addictive and marketing those to children. Gaetz confirmed to Politico in a text message that he and Morgan have discussed joining forces. ALSO READ: The Medicare Advantage trap: What they don’t tell you "I’ve known John Morgan for more than a decade. I’ve taken a lot of advice from him on matters of law, policy and politics. I have great respect for how he stands to the powerful for his clients — and he wins," said Gaetz. The fit appears to be a curious one for both men. Morgan has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years to Democratic causes across the country, including $355,000 to the Biden Victory Fund in August 2020, $109,500 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2022, $100,000 to Terry McAuliffe's campaign for Virginia governor in 2020 and $35,500 to the Democratic National Committee in 2020. Gaetz, meanwhile, has been an ally of President-elect Donald Trump and has taken several right-wing stances throughout his political career, including opposing sanctuary cities — campaigning that undocumented immigrants were “ sucking us dry ” — opposing gun restrictions and taking an anti-abortion stance. Gaetz's tenure in Congress came to an abrupt end when he resigned days ahead of a House Ethics Committee vote on whether to release a report on its investigation into serious allegations against Gaetz , including sex trafficking of a minor, sexual misconduct with a minor, drug use bribery and misusing campaign funds. He has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

That means Butler will not play Saturday at Atlanta or Sunday at Houston. The earliest he could play again is Wednesday at home against New Orleans. Butler hasn’t played since the first quarter of Miami’s Dec. 20 game against Oklahoma City, when he twisted an ankle, left the game and then was ruled out because of illness. Miami has played three games since without Butler, two because of the illness and then Thursday’s win in Orlando with him back in Miami conditioning for a return. He is not with the team on the road trip. The Heat said Thursday that they are not going to trade Butler, that announcement coming after ESPN, citing sources, said the six-time All-Star would prefer to be moved before the trade deadline on Feb. 6. Butler has not publicly expressed any desire to be traded. He is averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season. (The Center Square) – Paula Scanlan is hopeful the narrative around gender ideology is shifting, especially as Republicans prepare for majorities in both chambers of the 119th Congress and a seat in the White House. “I am hopeful that with the majorities now that we will be able to get across the finish line,” Scanlan told The Center Square on Thursday, speaking of more legislation on the way to protect women's spaces. “Obviously, this goes beyond sports ... So ideally, I think that the biggest thing would be to federally pass something that says this is what a woman is.” Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. This time, It is adding granular settings for users to choose when and how exactly can games download updates. This is part of the brand-new Steam Client Beta update that went live today. Currently in the live build, Steam will measure users' previous interactions with games to judge whether a brand-new updates needs immediate downloading, or keep it for later. There are existing options to set download times and speed limits, but these have not been deemed enough: "While this default behavior works in most cases, there are times when you need more control of when updates are applied. Some users might want to delay updating a 200GB game until they are ready to play it again in a few months, especially if they are on metered connections or have monthly bandwidth caps. For others who play the same game every night, they might want updates downloaded as soon as they are available. The process of automatic updates itself can be changed in the beta client now. The Downloads section in the app's settings page can be used to change the default behavior to "let Steam decide when to update the game" or "wait to update until the game is launched." Next, going to any game's properties in the beta client will reveal the new Automatic Updates section that applies changes just to that title. The four available options here are: set it to use the chosen Global Setting, wait until the user launches the game to update, let Steam decide (depending on user history), and give priority to download any update to it immediately, skipping any other restrictions. Once Valve decides the feature is ready to ship, it will move to the main client from beta at a later date. For those who can't wait, they can switch to the Steam Beta Client by heading to the app's Settings > Interface section and changing the Client Beta Participation dropdown to the latest version available.

President Joe Biden on Monday signed into law a defense bill that authorizes significant pay raises for junior enlisted service members, aims to counter China 's growing power and boosts overall military spending to $895 billion despite his objections to language stripping coverage of transgender medical treatments for children in military families. Biden said his administration strongly opposes the provision because it targets a group based on gender identity and "interferes with parents’ roles to determine the best care for their children.” He said it also undermines the all-volunteer military's ability to recruit and retain talent. “No service member should have to decide between their family’s health care access and their call to serve our nation,” the president said in a statement. The Senate forwarded the bill to Biden after passing it last week by a vote of 85-14. In the House, a majority of Democrats voted against the bill after House Speaker Mike Johnson insisted on adding the provision to ban transgender medical care for children. The legislation easily passed by a vote of 281-140. Biden also objected to other language in the bill prohibiting the use of money earmarked to transfer detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba , to some foreign countries and into the United States. He urged Congress to lift those restrictions. The annual defense authorization bill, which directs Pentagon policy, provides a 14.5% pay raise for junior enlisted service members and a 4.5% increase for others. The legislation also directs resources towards a more confrontational approach to China, including establishing a fund that could be used to send military resources to Taiwan in much the same way that the U.S. has backed Ukraine. It also invests in new military technologies, including artificial intelligence, and bolsters the U.S. production of ammunition. The U.S. has also moved in recent years to ban the military from purchasing Chinese products, and the defense bill extended that with prohibitions on Chinese goods from garlic in military commissaries to drone technology. The legislation still must be backed up with a spending package. __ Associated Press writer Stephen Groves contributed to this report.

(AP) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will miss Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers with a sore throwing shoulder. Purdy injured his right shoulder in last Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy underwent an MRI that showed no structural damage but the shoulder didn’t improve during the week and Purdy was ruled out for the game. Coach Kyle Shanahan said star defensive end Nick Bosa also will miss the game with injuries to his left hip and oblique. Left tackle Trent Williams is questionable with an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision. This will be the first time Purdy has missed a start because of an injury since taking over as the 49ers’ quarterback in December 2022. Brandon Allen will start in his place. The Niners (5-5) are currently in a three-way tie for second in the NFC West, a game behind first-place Arizona, and have little margin for error if they want to get back to the playoffs after making it to the Super Bowl last season. Purdy has completed 66% of his passes this season for 2,613 yards, 13 TDs, eight interceptions and a 95.9 passer rating that is down significantly from his league-leading mark of 113 in 2023. Allen has been mostly a backup since being drafted by Jacksonville in 2016. Allen last started a game in Week 18 of the 2021 season for Cincinnati and has thrown just three passes the last three seasons — including none since joining San Francisco in 2023. Joshua Dobbs will be the backup on Sunday. Rape allegation against Jay-Z won’t impact NFL's relationship with music mogul, Goodell says IRVING, Texas (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says a rape allegation against rapper Jay-Z won’t impact the NFL's relationship with the music mogul. Jay-Z's company Roc Nation has produced some of the NFL’s entertainment presentations including the Super Bowl halftime show. A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 amended the lawsuit Sunday to include an allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. Jay-Z says the rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. The NFL teamed up with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in 2019 for events and social activism. The league and the entertainment company extended their partnership a few months ago. Ohio politician proposes make flag planting a felony after fight in Michigan rivalry game An Ohio politician has seen enough flag planting. Republican state Rep. Josh Williams said Wednesday on social media he's introducing a bill to make flag planting in sports a felony in the state. Gastineau confronts Favre in documentary for his 'dive' on Strahan's record-breaking sack Former New York Jets star Mark Gastineau confronted Brett Favre last year at a memorabilia show and angrily accused the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback of deliberately going down on a record-breaking sack. Gastineau set an NFL record with 22 sacks in 1984, but Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan broke the mark when he sacked Favre in 2002 in a game between the Giants and Packers. Many have accused Favre of purposely taking the sack so Strahan could set the single-season record with 22 1/2. What happens next with Alex Jones' Infowars? No certainty yet after sale to The Onion is rejected Lawyers in the Alex Jones bankruptcy case are now in discussions on what could happen next after a federal judge in Texas rejected the auction sale of Jones’ Infowars to The Onion satirical news outlet. The next steps remained unclear Wednesday as the judge ordered the trustee who oversaw the auction to come up with a new plan. Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston rejected the bid late Tuesday, saying there was too much confusion about The Onion’s bid. The bankruptcy case was in the wake of the nearly $1.5 billion that courts have ordered Jones to pay for calling the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut a hoax. Sandy Hook families had backed The Onion’s bid. Albertsons sues Kroger for failing to win approval of their proposed supermarket merger Kroger and Albertsons’ plan for the largest U.S. supermarket merger in history has crumbled. The two companies have accused each other of not doing enough to push their proposed alliance through, and Albertsons pulled out of the $24.6 billion deal on Wednesday. The bitter breakup came the day after a federal judge in Oregon and a state judge in Washington issued injunctions to block the merger, saying that combining the two grocery chains could reduce competition and harm consumers. Albertsons is now suing Kroger, seeking a $600 million termination fee, as well as billions of dollars in legal fees and lost shareholder value. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Tuesday the government will work with business leaders and labor unions to create an environment where salaries keep rising, vowing to achieve his goal of raising Japan's average minimum hourly wage to 1,500 yen by the end of the 2020s. But Ishiba also instructed relevant ministers to draw up measures by next spring to ease concerns among smaller businesses unable to increase salaries rapidly. He met with representatives from the Japanese Trade Union Confederation and business lobbies including the Japan Business Federation at the prime minister's office, starting discussions toward annual minimum wage revisions and wage negotiations between labor unions and management in 2025. The average minimum hourly wage for fiscal 2024 was set at 1,055 yen. Achieving Ishiba's target of raising it to 1,500 yen in the 2020s requires 7.3 percent growth each year, and business leaders who attended Tuesday's meeting expressed their concerns. "Small business owners in rural areas cannot pay if the pace of wage hikes is too fast," Ken Kobayashi, chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told reporters after the meeting. Masakazu Tokura, head of the business federation or Keidanren, said, "It takes time for management to make improvement efforts." At the meeting, Ishiba also urged companies' efforts to realize "significant salary hikes" at annual wage negotiations in early next year, as the country has been facing rising prices due largely to higher import costs amid the weaker yen. In the so-called shunto spring wage talks this year, member unions of the confederation secured an average 5.1 percent pay rise, topping 5 percent for the first time in more than 30 years. The average pay hike for smaller firms, meanwhile, stood at 4.45 percent in 2024. In another effort to mitigate the impact of soaring prices and boost consumption, Ishiba is planning to pledge in a parliamentary policy speech Friday that the government will raise the nontaxable income threshold from the current 1.03 million yen, an issue being discussed as part of tax changes for fiscal 2025, sources close to the matter said. Trump's policies Also Tuesday, the government warned of the potential adverse impact of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's economic policies, as it maintained its view that the country's economy is recovering moderately in its monthly report for November. The Cabinet Office, which is in charge of economic and fiscal policy, said the economy is "recovering at a moderate pace, although it remains paused in part," using the same expression for its overall assessment for the fourth straight month. The government upgraded its assessment of imports, which typically reflect robust domestic demand, citing improved shipments of goods such as personal computers from China and automobiles from India. But the report said "full attention" should be given to the "future policy trends in the United States," following Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential election in early November. He will assume office in January. Trump's proposed plans, such as raising tariffs and cutting taxes, could affect the U.S. economy and accelerate inflation, a Cabinet Office official said. Any impact on the world's largest economy is bound to affect Japan, given the strong economic ties between the two countries, the official said. Consumer prices, a key gauge of inflation, were changed from "rising moderately" to "rising recently," due partly to a surge in food prices including rice. It was the first change in 10 months. The Cabinet Office revised its wording on corporate goods prices from "the pace of rise is slowing" to "modestly rising." The assessment of public investment was downgraded, as the effect of public works financed by a supplementary budget for the previous fiscal year that ended in March tapered off. The budget was aimed at strengthening infrastructure. The government made no changes to its evaluations of other key components such as private consumption, which accounts for more than half of the nation's gross domestic product, and exports. The Premier League season has not reached its halfway point and yet Arsenal knew this was a game they had to win. Liverpool’s stunning form at the top of the table had seen to that. It was scrappy for long spells, Ipswich digging deep, determined to show a response to the 4-0 home drubbing against Newcastle from last Saturday – the only time they have taken a real battering this season. Arsenal were restricted. They found chances difficult to come by. But in the end, one goal was enough – together with another clean sheet for David Raya, his 23rd in 50 league appearances for the club. Kai Havertz was the scorer, turning home a Leandro Trossard cross midway through the first half; he made it look simple. The game was not that way for Arsenal but they did what was required, keeping alive the division’s only unbeaten home record in the process. They are up into second place, six points behind Liverpool, albeit having played an extra match. It was the night when Arsenal started their stretch , who is coming to terms with the first major injury setback of his career; when they had to begin to find a way to replace his goals and assists. As expected, Arteta switched Gabriel Martinelli over to the right wing and brought in Trossard on the left. The overall sweep of it is that Arsenal want to do better without Saka than they did without the captain, Martin Ødegaard, when he missed seven league games from mid-September. The team won only three of them without him. Kieran McKenna wanted Ipswich to be compact. He wanted his team to keep Arsenal in front of them and, most definitely, not allow them to get in around the sides. Which is why the concession of the breakthrough goal would have upset him so much. Ipswich were solid enough for the first 20 minutes or so. But then a cross from Martinelli on the right found its way all the way through to Trossard on the other flank and it was a straight one-on-one between him and Ben Johnson. Trossard won it with ease, flicking on the after-burners to get to the byline and cross. When the ball reached Havertz – and it eluded a couple of blue shirts on the way – he finished with an assured touch from close range. Ipswich switched between a five and a four at the back; it was more five than four, depending mainly on where Johnson was on the right-hand side. They created a half-chance inside the opening minute when a Leif Davis cross deflected and Sammie Szmodics could not get anything to it as it bounced. But the pattern for the remainder of the first half became deeply entrenched, Arsenal dominating the ball, Ipswich with everybody behind it, holding their shape. After 27 minutes, Arsenal had hogged a jaw-dropping 92% of the possession. Liam Delap looked to put himself about at the tip of the Ipswich formation and it certainly said something that the visiting goalkeeper, Arijanet Muric, was jeered for time-wasting just 20 minutes in. That was after Jurriën Timber had blasted straight at him after rushing through a small seam in the centre of the pitch. Arsenal struggled to create very much in the first half. Trossard had a shot blocked by Kalvin Phillips, who made his first start since 2 November. Declan Rice whipped one high from distance. And Gabriel Jesus had the ball in the net only to be pulled back for offside. For Ipswich, it was about staying in contention. Arsenal were chasing a fourth successive clean sheet at home in the league and it was a bold move by Arteta to persist with Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back, with Riccardo Calafiori back to fitness. The 18-year-old had a lovely moment in the first half when he turned upfield, away from a challenge, trying to make something happen. If that was noteworthy, it was because there was plenty of niggle and not so much inspiration. Omari Hutchinson, booed by the Arsenal fans who had not forgotten how he drove a move away from their academy to Chelsea, was fortunate to avoid a booking after a dive in Lewis-Skelly’s vicinity. Lewis-Skelly would square up to Phillips on the hour. He is no respecter of reputation. The home support needed a second goal to allow them to breath more easily and it was a mystery how Gabriel Magalhães did not score it after Rice arched over a wonderful corner in the 63rd minute. Having run off Delap, he was all alone and just three yards out when he made contact for the header. He directed it past the post. Ødegaard crackled to life in the second half, driving in the final third. He saw Muric tip over from him and, from the resulting corner, he picked out Rice on the edge of the area, who caught the volley sweetly. Dara O’Shea blocked. Arsenal pushed. Havertz missed his kick when well-placed; the substitute, Mikel Merino extended Muric. It became about them keeping the back door bolted.Intercontinental Exchange Chair & CEO Jeffrey C. Tanger Nashville’s transformational design supports sustainability through on-site solar energy production, water use reduction systems, low-emitting materials, lighting controls, electric vehicle charging, and more. The center fosters engagement and well-being through ease of access, walkability, green and gathering spaces, an extensive mural arts program, and restaurants, retail brands, and experiences that celebrate the local culture and community. Opened in October 2023, the development has also helped to revitalize the Southeast Nashville community that surrounds it, fueling job creation, economic health, and business growth in the area. Earlier this year, the Nashville chapter of the Urban Land Institute recognized Tanger Nashville with a 2024 Excellence in Development Award for being one of the best and most innovative projects in the region and for its positive impacts on the community. Tanger Nashville will next pursue LEED Gold® for Operations and Maintenance (O+M) certification, as will Bridge Street Town Centre, Tanger’s open-air lifestyle shopping destination in Huntsville, Alabama. Tanger has 18 other shopping centers that have achieved LEED Gold O+M certification (one of which also achieved BD+C certification), reflecting Tanger’s deep commitment to best-in-class, sustainable operations across its portfolio. StormReady Tanger has also taken steps to mitigate the potential impacts of severe weather on its operations, for the benefit of all who work and shop at its centers. Tanger partners with the U.S. Department of Commerce and National Weather Service to ensure its shopping centers are “StormReady” and has been recognized as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. These programs help communities strengthen local safety programs and preparation skills needed to protect lives and property in extreme weather and water events. The scenario-specific Weather-Ready plans Tanger maintains at its centers have helped its local team members remain safe and mitigate property damage during events like this year’s devastating hurricanes. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Tanger’s center in Asheville, North Carolina, was well prepared to support the community, hosting emergency responders on-site and quickly restoring business operations to serve residents and business partners. WELL Health and Safety As part of its commitment to the well-being of people at its centers, Tanger achieved and has maintained the WELL Health-Safety Rating for Facility Operations and Management for all the shopping centers it owned and managed in the U.S. in 2022. This year, Tanger Outlets Nashville also achieved this Rating, and the two newest additions to Tanger’s portfolio, in Huntsville, AL, and Asheville, NC, are expected to achieve it in 2025. A component of the International WELL Building Institute’s WELL Building Standard, the WELL Health-Safety Rating recognizes owners and operators like Tanger that prioritize the health and safety of their team members, visitors, and stakeholders. Tanger also participates in the WELL at Scale program to maintain its WELL Ratings more efficiently and benchmark its health and well-being efforts across the portfolio. MINNEAPOLIS — Just over a week ago, the Lakers’ mission was clear. But what has transpired over the last week has been a reversal of what was desired. The Lakers’ offense was humming coming off a frustrating 119-118 home loss to the Orlando Magic on Nov. 21 that ended their six-game winning streak. Their 118.3 offensive rating (points scored per 100 possessions) ranked No. 4 through the first 15 games, delivering on the belief that the Lakers could be an elite offensive team. They scored at least 110 points in seven of eight games through the loss to the Magic and 12 of the first 15 games, helping them to a 10-5 record. The next step was clear: improve on the defensive end of the court, with the Lakers’ defensive rating of 117.4 in the first 15 games ranking 26th. The Lakers accomplished their goal: their defense has improved, with a defensive rating of 114.9 in their past six games (19th), including 109.8 (12th) in their last four. But it’s come at a cost – their once elite offense has fallen off significantly over the last week-plus, most evident in their 109-80 road loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night . “It’s very frustrating,” All-Star big man Anthony Davis said. “We were really good offensively and our defense was a problem and we kind of start just focusing on defense and now our offense is kind of shifted. So we got to get back to how we were [at] the beginning of the year, playing on both sides of the ball very well. “The good thing about it is, offensively it doesn’t take that much to get back going. Defense is a little bit tougher. So with the guys that we have in this locker room, I think we will be fine to figure it out.” The Lakers’ offensive rating has plummeted to 102.4 in their past six games for the league’s third-worst mark (28th) in that stretch. The absence of Austin Reaves, the team’s third-leading scorer who has missed the last two games because of a bruised left pelvis and is listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game in Miami, has impacted the offense. But the Lakers’ offensive regression started before Reaves’ injury. The ball and player movement has taken a notable dip compared to earlier in the season. The Lakers are passing fewer times per game during this offensive lull. Old habits have replaced the ones Coach JJ Redick tried to replace with an offensive system that values player and ball movement. Related Articles “I feel like the offense was fun,” Redick said. “I really believe we’ve gotten better defensively. We’ve spent a lot of time as a staff defensively. And this is the nature of the NBA season. You don’t have a ton of time. The things you emphasize, hopefully you get better at. And sometimes when you don’t emphasize something, or you don’t work on something because you don’t necessarily have time, or you think you’re good at it and you think you have buy-in at it, you just get slippage. We gotta clean that up.” To LeBron James, the Lakers improving their offense will come down to investing similar energy as they did to improve their defense. “Just watching the film and seeing ways we can do better,” James said. “We did that a lot when we wanted to get our defense corrected and we corrected it. You spend a little bit more time on offense things too.” When: Wednesday, 4:30 p.m. Where: Kaseya Center, Miami TV/radio: NBA TV, Spectrum SportsNet/710 AMNone

(Image: Canva) The word cringe means to feel embarrassed and it has been overused in the past couple of years in the wrong sense. The human feelings differ from time to time based on the situation and with growing up or maturity, it is common for any human to feel ashamed or embarrassed with what they had done or said back in time. Some might suddenly get a "cringe attack" which is an intense feeling of shame or humiliation and it can be triggered by any factor. IPL 2025 Mega Auction IPL Auction 2025 Live: Rishabh Pant, Shreyas, Venkatesh hit the jackpot IPL 2025 Auction LIVE: Updated Full Team Squads IPL Auction 2025: Who got whom It is common in people under social behaviour and it might sometimes even pass shivers through the entire body. Why do we get cringe attacks? Psychiatrist Lim Boon Leng in an interview with News Asia stated that a cringe attack is an evolutionary trait that serves as a survival mechanism . Somatic therapist Danic Harris from Texas claimed that the cringe attacks can catch you off-guard and cited that a text sent 3 years ago can probably pop into your head when feeling low and it might make one feel very embarrassed. Harris speaking to Additude explained that the human brain thinks it is saving one from having another shame-inducing moment but it's not and it is only because of a feeling that is there in the memory. It is to be noted that one can overcome the cringe attacks by self-forgiveness , changing mindsets, and disclosure. Harris mentioned that comparatively a perfectionist gets more cringe attacks as it particularly triggers their negative sense, and the same goes for people-pleasers. However for people with a good sense of self and functional ego, cringe attacks may be very rare but if one is self-critical and who's highly flawed - with a negative basis it is prone to revisit their past causing them cringe attacks. How to avoid cringe attacks? Psychiatrist Lim Boon Leng noted that Gen Z is prone to getting a lot of cringe attacks and said that is a dangerous signal that needs to be repeated. Cringe attack is a form of a suppression rebound effect and it is common among younger generations as when one is older, they might be less worried about being judged or what people think of them. As you're older, you may be less worried about being judged or what people think of you, so you cringe less and think less of these situations.CNX Resources ( NYSE:CNX – Get Free Report ) had its price objective raised by Truist Financial from $34.00 to $35.00 in a report released on Friday, Benzinga reports. r top r Who is FBI Director Christopher Wray? The Memphis Grizzlies are learning the benefits of giving this season. When Memphis hosts the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, the Grizzlies will be seeking their sixth consecutive win and their 10th in their past 13 games. Their November success has been the result of an unselfish, team-oriented approach. The Grizzlies enter Saturday leading the NBA with 30.4 assists per game. Memphis dished out 36 assists on 47 made baskets in Friday's 120-109 home victory over New Orleans. "The ball movement (was) great," Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said. "I think we had nine or 10 guys with two or more assists -- or 10 out of 11 guys (with) an assist, which is great." Ja Morant, who missed Wednesday's home win against Detroit due to a bruised knee, led the Grizzlies with seven assists against New Orleans, and Marcus Smart had six off the bench. Despite being limited to 10 games this season, Morant leads the team with 9.1 assists per game, followed by Scotty Pippen Jr. (5.7) and Smart (4.1). "When the ball's moving, it's about getting everyone involved," Pippen said. "It makes it a lot of fun to play with everyone. So, I feel like that's (when we are) the most dangerous, when everyone's touching the ball and everyone feels aggressive." Friday's win marked Memphis' first NBA Cup victory in the second year of the event. The Grizzlies had lost their first seven games of NBA Cup group play. As for Indiana, the Pacers were eliminated from contention for the NBA Cup knockout round with their 130-106 home loss Friday to Detroit. Indiana is 0-3 in Cup play. The Pacers had won three straight games -- all at home -- before being overpowered by the Pistons. Pascal Siakam and Tyrese Haliburton led Indiana with 21 and 19 points, respectively. While the Pacers have struggled during the first two months of the season, Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said several of his younger players have shown signs of contributing at a significant level, including second-year forward Jarace Walker. Walker, 21, finished with 10 points and notched five of the team's nine steals off the bench on Friday. Additionally, third-year guard Bennedict Mathurin, 22, has excelled in a starting role and is averaging 17.7 points per game, while Quenton Jackson, 26, has averaged 10.3 points in his past three games. "(Walker) went in there (Friday against Detroit) and decisively stepped into shot and he was physical," Carlisle said. "Right now is a time for guys like Jarace and Q (Jackson) and Ben (Mathurin) to experience what it's like to have this kind of responsibility and respond as best they can." Mathurin is second on the team in scoring behind Siakam (19.9 points per game), while Haliburton's 16.6 scoring average ranks third. Sunday's game is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. Indiana and Memphis split last season's two meetings, with each squad winning at home. --Field Level Media

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s federal police on Thursday formally accused former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people of attempting a coup to keep him in office after his defeat in the 2022 elections. Police said their sealed findings were being delivered Thursday to Brazil’s Supreme Court, which will refer them to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, who decides either to formally charge Bolsonaro and put him on trial, or toss the investigation. Bolsonaro told the website Metropoles that he was waiting for his lawyer to review the accusation, reportedly about 700 pages long. But he said he would fight the case and dismissed the investigation as being the result of “creativity.” The former right-wing president has denied all claims he tried to stay in office after his narrow electoral defeat in 2022 to his rival, leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has faced a series of legal threats since then. Police said in a brief statement that the Supreme Court had agreed to reveal the names of all 37 people who were accused “to avoid the dissemination of incorrect news.” Dozens of former and current Bolsonaro aides also were accused, including Gen. Walter Braga Netto, who was his running mate in the 2022 campaign; former Army commander Gen. Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira; Valdemar Costa Neto, the chairman of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party; and his veteran former adviser, Gen. Augusto Heleno. Other investigations produced formal accusations of Bolsonaro’s roles in smuggling diamond jewelry into Brazil without properly declaring them and in directing a subordinate to falsify his and others’ COVID-19 vaccination statuses. Bolsonaro has denied any involvement in either. Another probe found that he had abused his authority to cast doubt on the country’s voting system, and judges barred him from running again until 2030. Still, he has insisted that he will run in 2026, and many in his orbit were heartened by the recent U.S. election win of Donald Trump, despite his own swirling legal threats. But the far-reaching investigations already have weakened Bolsonaro’s status as a leader of Brazil’s right wing, said Carlos Melo, a political science professor at Insper University in Sao Paulo. “Bolsonaro is already barred from running in the 2026 elections,” Melo told the The Associated Press. “And if he is convicted he could also be jailed by then. To avoid being behind bars, he will have to convince Supreme Court justices that he has nothing to do with a plot that involves dozens of his aides. That’s a very tall order,” Melo said. A formal accusation of an attempted coup means the investigation has gathered indications of “a crime and its author,” said Eloísa Machado de Almeida, a law professor at Getulio Vargas Foundation, a university in Sao Paulo. She said she believed there was enough legal grounds for the prosecutor-general to file charges. Bolsonaro’s allies in Congress have been negotiating a bill to pardon individuals who stormed the Brazilian capital and rioted on Jan. 8, 2023 in a failed attempt to keep the former president in power. Analysts have speculated that lawmakers want to extend the legislation to cover the former president himself. However, efforts to push a broad amnesty bill may be “politically challenging” given recent attacks on the judiciary and details emerging in investigations, Machado said. On Tuesday, Federal Police arrested four military and a Federal Police officer, accused of plotting to assassinate Lula and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes as a means to overthrow the government following the 2022 elections. And last week, a man carried out a bomb attack in the capital Brasilia . He attempted to enter the Supreme Court and threw explosives outside, killing himself.None

Virginia starting quarterback Anthony Colandrea plans to enter the transfer portal, he said Monday. "This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the best step for my academic and athletic future," Colandrea said in a statement posted to social media. Colandrea started 11 games this season as a true sophomore, throwing for 2,125 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He struggled in his last four starts, however, with seven interceptions and just two touchdowns. Virginia benched him in favor of senior Tony Muskett for the regular-season finale against Virginia Tech with a chance to gain bowl eligibility. The Cavaliers lost anyway as they ended the season with losses in six of their last seven games. With Colandrea transferring and Muskett exhausting his eligibility, Virginia will be in the market for a quarterback.

An additional chief judicial magistrate court at Ballard Pier recently issued notice to Google's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai over YouTube's failure to take down an alleged defamatory video against NGO Dhyan Foundation and its founder Yogi Ashwini, reported Bar and Bench. The contempt case is now expected to come up for hearing on January 3, 2025. In March 2023, additional chief metropolitan magistrate of the 38th court, Ballard Pier, directed YouTube to remove a defamatory video titled 'Pakhandi Baba ki Kartut' from its platform. The order came in response to a complaint filed by Dhyan Foundation, alleging that the video contained false and malicious allegations tarnishing its reputation. In its defense, YouTube, owned by Google, claimed immunity as an intermediary under the Information Technology (IT) Act. It argued that defamation does not fall under the categories listed in section 69A of the Act, which allows for blocking content. The platform stated that such grievances should be addressed in civil courts, not criminal courts. The court, however, rejected YouTube's technical objections, stating that the IT Act does not explicitly bar criminal courts from intervening in such matters. The magistrate noted that the video’s defamatory nature was undisputed and its continued circulation could harm public peace. “The sentiments of followers of any organisation in India are very sensitive particularly when it comes to belief. Therefore, if those videos are not restricted, it may cause threat to public order and security of the state,” the court said. It is Dhyan Foundation's contention that the takedown order has not been complied with, prompting them to file a contempt petition in October 2023. A notice in the plea was issued in November 2024.

NBA News: Adrian 'Woj' Wojnarowski Responds to Shocking Cancer RevealSome directors are good with music. James Mangold is one of them. Back in 2006, “Walk the Line” scored five Oscar nods and won Best Actress for Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. (Joaquin as Johnny Cash lost to Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Capote”). A hard-drinking Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook) makes a memorable appearance in “ A Complete Unknown ” (in theaters December 25 from Searchlight), Mangold’s latest music movie, this time focused on the four-year origin myth of Bob Dylan, from his arrival in New York at age 19 in 1961 to his going electric at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Mangold is returning to his bent for more personal filmmaking (Best Picture Oscar nominee “Ford v Ferrari” ) after tackling 2023 franchise entry “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” for Steven Spielberg. The writer/director spoke to me on Zoom during his global press tour for “A Complete Unknown,” which has earned upbeat reviews, especially for Timothée Chalamet . On the awards circuit, Chalamet could follow his Best Actor Oscar nomination for “Call Me By Your Name” with a second, while Mangold and Jay Cocks are in the running for Adapted Screenplay; Mangold was nominated for Adapted Screenplay for “Logan” but has never made it into the Best Director circle. So far “A Complete Unknown” is landing with awards groups, nabbing the same three Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award nominations for Chalamet, supporting actor Edward Norton, and Best Motion Picture Drama/Picture; Elle Fanning won Best Supporting Actress from the National Board of Review, and the film made it to both the NBR and AFI Top Ten. This Zoom interview has been edited and condensed for clarity and brevity. Anne Thompson: Did you hear Zane Lowe’s unfettered interview with Timothée? James Mangold: It was remarkable. I love him. He’s a remarkable young man. Our journey on this movie has been five-and-a-half years. We met for the first time in 2019 at the Toronto Film Festival. I had just gotten my hands on the Elijah Wald book and Jay Cocks’ script. And there was a project in turnaround from HBO, and I had heard Timmy was interested in it. That was a home run idea. I had only a week ago just heard about the material, found out Timmy was in Toronto while I was there. So on the day that “Ford v Ferrari” premiered, I met with him there and told him how I saw the movie working in the most abstract sense. Do you remember that pitch? The simplest version was using “Amadeus” as a template. The way to structure this was to use the supporting cast to see the effect that genius has on them and to try to understand Bob through each of their eyes, instead of trying to crack him in the classic Freudian sense that he would have some big scene in the third act where he confesses some secret that everyone’s been waiting for, which from all my research, I’m not sure there is one. [Timmy] was excited, and he was thrilled. The fact that I made “Walk the Line” gave him confidence. He’s also a quick decision-maker and an instinctual actor. We decided to do this together, and I went to work revising the script. How big a Dylan fan were you at that point? The project didn’t come from me being a Dylan fan. I’ve listened to Dylan all my life, and like many people have gone in and out... listening to him non-stop, and then I have to take a rest, and then a year later, another wave of Dylan comes into my life. I wasn’t walking around going: “I’ve got to make a Bob Dylan movie.” The idea of making a movie about any true-life person, alive or dead, is to know what part of their life you’re making a movie about [before] you start to assemble a birth-to-retirement or death storyline that is so sprawling that it rarely has thematic unity to it at all. The book Cocks had adapted was focused on the road to the electric breakout? Jay wrote many scenes that still survive in the movie now. But Jay went into 1965 quickly. And I wanted to watch this ascent, and there wasn’t any folk period in the early 1960s. He did introduce Woody [Guthrie, played by Scoot McNairy], but then you jumped forward. The idea of keeping Woody alive through the movie for visits mid-picture and at the end of the movie was another thing I felt was important, to keep him, literally and figuratively, alive through the movie as a primal touchstone for Bob. Was Pete Seeger [Edward Norton] supposed to be what Dylan became? He was going to take over the folk mantle and be the popularizer of folk music, and he handed it to Dylan? Do you see it that way? Not exactly. I deeply admire Pete Seeger. I learned to play banjo in high school, inspired mainly by Pete and Steve Martin, but it’s not controversial to say that Pete only wrote a handful of songs and was much more of a missionary and an evangelist for folk music. Then he was an iconic artist whose unique brand of folk music defined and lifted all folk music. His optimism and generosity and sense of lifting all other boats, as he did with Bob and Joan and many others, and his sense of causes, which he would attach himself to all the way to the end of his life with Toshi, his wife, saving the Hudson River, were who Pete was. Look at it this way: Woody Guthrie, singer-songwriter, auteur, prickly, difficult man, salt of the earth; Pete Seeger, more of an evangelist operator, expert communicator, who was lifting Woody’s work and all the others. And then into their world arrives this star that Pete Seeger recognizes, who has some of what Pete doesn’t have, youth and edge, and a songbook that is staggering, and Seeger recognizes the value of an artist like this and immediately embraces him and is rewarded with Dylan becoming the center, holding up the circus tent of folk music. Did Dylan eventually betray Seeger? Did Bob ever agree to anything? Did he take a pledge? I don’t think he’s betrayed. Must all marriages, even ones that are unofficiated, last forever? And these are the questions the movie asks. In our movie, in the first scene alone with Pete in a car, Bob is clear that he’s not necessarily drinking the same kind of purity; he doesn’t view things in the same clearly divided way. You know that he doesn’t see things as us vs. them. He admires Little Richard and Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, and these are all influences which he thinks are marvelous, and they play on the pop charts, and they have drums and keyboards and rhythm sections. Bob becomes what Pete suggests and excels at it as a solo artist. You spoke with Dylan. Dylan himself was clear to me that he never envisioned himself being a solitary artist on stage. That was not his kind of dream. So that’s why he came to pay homage to Woody, who also, by the way, played with many string bands and bands in his career. But that didn’t mean that all he wanted was to be the Bob Dylan that he became. Dylan’s break toward electric music or band music was something that he always wanted to do and it was actually a matter of how long he was going to hold himself back to maintain this kind of tribalism that had divided these two camps from each other. Also Johnny Cash played at Newport Folk Festival many times, and had no problem as they brought a complete band on the stage. So obviously their concern about Dylan was that he was a symbol of their music. Johnny was a country music star coming as a special guest, a novelty, but Bob was folk, and if Bob turned to something other than folk, the tent might collapse. It struck Timothée that who Dylan was and what he represents is the exact opposite of what everything is today. The movie shows us not that he was pure but that he was true to his art. I agree with Timothée’s observation. [Bob] wanted to paint, but he didn’t want to be the voice in your headphones at MoMA, when you look at the paintings, he didn’t want to have to explain his work. And I think we’ve only gotten worse in that we can’t look at mystery. Art is mystery. The power of art is that it could be read different ways by different people. That it is not journalism. And it is not a Wikipedia entry, and it is not a set of facts or bullet points or simple references, and that to point out what you’re doing is to cheapen your work, and that those of us like Timothée and myself who live in this modern era, we know that’s unavoidable. You have to do it. But Dylan avoided it. But I don’t think it was out of intellectual fortitude or artistic ethics. Dylan was uncomfortable with interviews and with explication of oneself and one’s intentions. It’s easy for one to take what could be the result of a social anxiety and make it an artistic dogmatic position. And I tried to write the script with Jay that tried to depict [Dylan] as someone who loved making, but he didn’t necessarily enjoy or find comfort or even could be unwound by this mass adoration. His goal was never gigantic adoration. His goal was always to send these missives out in the world and let people process them. Timothée had to find that balance where he’s hooded, enigmatic, and mysterious but is also trying to draw you in while he’s keeping you out. It’s hard to pull off. Yes, but I don’t think Timmy tried to keep us out. I don’t think that’s a way you can direct an actor. One of the most beautiful touches early in the film that Timothée did in one take that I circled immediately, was Elle Fanning and him are out on a date, and they’re walking by a subway station, and she writes her number on his hand, and then she kisses his cheek, and Timmy has this moment where he flinches as she kisses his cheek, almost like it scares him a little. It was a penetrating moment: What if this character is actually living with an element of fear and anxiety about social interaction and love and connection, that it’s scary for them? I had this theory that the best angle would be to play him so that the outside world and the sensory world is intrusive to him, and it’s a struggle for him to stay present, and that instead of assuming everything is an attitude or an edge, what if there’s social awkwardness and a lack of filter that makes him blurt out things that are resoundingly blunt to the point that they seem impolite? But where he exists is a space of extreme honesty that doesn’t work in our world; it comes off as rudeness. I tried to find other ways to look at his behavior and encourage Timothée to examine them. For instance, we can call his making stories up about his past a lie, but we can also call it a wish, meaning that he wished he wasn’t a middle-class kid who grew up in comfort, the son of a man who owned a hardware store in Hibbing, Minnesota. He wished he came from the carnival and the rails and the dirt of the alleys like Woody Guthrie. And so those wishes becoming fantasies became legend, and I was trying to understand everything without assuming that he was this puppet master organizing this PR campaign of mystery and subterfuge, which I found slightly hard to believe. His sexual and professional bond with Joan Baez [Monica Barbaro], who was a bigger star, goes on through the movie until he turns up in her hotel room playing guitar in the middle of the night and she kicks him out! Joan was the one equal. Yes, they had different talents. Joan had a nightingale’s voice. She was a masterful guitar player. She had a perfection in her execution of her songs, but she only wrote a handful of songs. On the other side you had Bob, who was more of a wild card, who didn’t always sing, even on pitch, he was sloppy and slightly provocative and rambling in his stage presence. And so they’re completely opposite, but completely fascinating to one another, because, of course, the songs are springing from him like a fountain and how annoying that might be for Joan, that somehow this disheveled and semi-rude, rumpled genius, had no problem springing forth. With songs that she wanted to sing. They loved each other and were fascinated by one another. But it was unavoidable that there would be a slight competitive nature between them, and that each would covet something that the other had. Bob coveted her beautiful voice, her beautiful visage, her brilliant execution, and admired her stardom and her professionalism. And Joan admired the artistic volcano out of which these songs seem to spring. You’ve said the movie isn’t political, but weren’t Dylan’s songs political in their time? All movies are political, either directly or metaphorically. “Ford v Ferrari” is political. I wanted to represent all sides. But does it involve politics? Yes, not even just the obvious politics of the moment, but also the politics of what is music here for? Now, music is almost entirely about the self. We have very little music about our world, we sing entirely about our personal lives. In preparing the music, you did pre-recordings, but once you were shooting, it became apparent that after years of pandemic and strike delays with time for practice, the live performances were better? Was that scary ? It was less scary for me than it was for my sound team and in the edit room. Recordings are more challenging in these different locations, wherein to get a quality recording of the guitar playing, banjo playing, and singing, you have trucks going by, random creaks and sounds. And I had to convince them I didn’t care, that we could fix them later. But there were myriad technical issues, like, “What if Timmy plays the song at one rhythm in one take and then increases by two rhythm beats the next take?” The truth was, he did; the rhythm does vary slightly, but you don’t feel it because the song is so alive. It was much ado about nothing compared to the gains we got by allowing him to do it. It was a process that was rolling. I let us do the first song live; that worked so well we tried it again with the next. And in a sense, we always held the pre-records back there as a backup, and as we rolled forward, we got better and better. The sound team figured out where to hide mics in [Chalamet’s] hair or his hat, or secret mics inside the guitar. Everyone adapted and suddenly developed a brilliant technique to make it all happen. And you somehow got the period right. I grew up in New York in the ’60s and ’70s. I was born in ’63 but I remember those streets, the smell of them, the pickle barrels, the wonderful collection of humanity. That later period, 1969, is harder because you could look like a road production of “Hair” if you don’t watch yourself. But this period, as Bob himself said, the early ’60s were an extension of the ’50s, and the late ’60s were the beginning of the ’70s. And the ’60s, according to Bob, didn’t really exist. There was a dividing line at ’65 and everything onward was a prologue to the ’70s. The big change occurred somewhere around the Newport concert, and the arrival of the Beatles and The Stones, and the worsening of the Vietnam War, and the assassinations, and Woodstock, became demarcations of of a dramatic cultural shift. You recreated Greenwich Village in New Jersey? One of the advantages we had by landing in New Jersey: for a lot of the street scenes, we found blocks that were still pretty much exactly as they were 60 years ago, and they just required a bit of dressing. If you tried to shoot this in New York, there’s not a single block we could even afford to shut down, given the five-star restaurants and businesses that would never agree to anything that didn’t give them each $100,000 a night to close. We shot a few days in New York, obviously, outside the Chelsea Hotel and the Supreme Court courthouse. But most of it was in New Jersey. This is not a conventional narrative. How did you keep the audience invested in the story, even though it was basically a string of musical performances? First of all, I viewed the musical performance as part of the scenes. I viewed the songs as part of the scene where the actors were acting, but on pitch. I had the same demands when they were singing as when they were acting without singing, which is that there always had to be a subtext. There always had to be dramatic tension, whether in the wings or between each other on the stage or with someone in the audience, that I never wanted it to just be wholly a recreation of a famous concert. Watching people sing is no different than when you’re doing an action sequence in an action picture: if there isn’t story development inside the action, or if there isn’t story development inside the song, then the song is a commercial break from the drama of the movie, and the movie unwinds. In the film, Chalamet performs 40 songs, some are guitar or harmonica or radio fragments, including 26 whole songs. He prepared 30 songs, but you had to pick the ones that you put in the movie for a reason. When I started writing, I was just dropping the songs where they went in. I was conscious of how the songs gained power as explications of his emotional state in the context of what was going on politically and emotionally for him at that time. So him singing “Song for Woody” couldn’t be more intentional. Each one of these songs were revealing another aspect of him, also a different energy. Many of his songs were talking directly to the audience. Had that been done much before? Folk music, at that point, existed as a world of covers. All popular music was primarily in [the early ’60s] people singing standards, even Coltrane and Davis, most of their albums were taking Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes, or “My Funny Valentine,” or taking popular melodies and bending them. What happened in the age of Dylan? The power of modern songwriting. Personal songwriting took over, and this idea that we only should sing songs that existed already, that have proven themselves with time, evaporated. And that’s what opened the door for Dylan’s descendants, because he was ready with a portfolio of insanely powerful original music. This film is an antidote to what is going on in Hollywood. It is the opposite of franchise filmmaking, and while we know Dylan and his songs, this is a modest movie that celebrates a gritty authenticity that we don’t see much anymore. I move between those worlds, and in some ways, they give me the license to drive and make these movies, and the wherewithal to put them together financially. And otherwise, these are a big risk for studios, especially if they’re going out theatrically. It’s a white elephant at this point that you have mainstream studios making original movies that don’t have a guaranteed audience, that rely upon execution in order to succeed. And I’m grateful to Searchlight and my friends at Disney for supporting me on this movie because it is a risk, and I miss these movies in the theater. And I grew up on 7’0s films, and so my style is, if anything’ more formed from the work of Mike Nichols and Alan Pakula and Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese and Sidney Lumet and William Friedkin and Bogdanovich, these are the movies I grew up on. And these were all extremely versatile filmmakers who moved from comedy to serious to fantasy to adventure, and there wasn’t this demand that we exist in a lane or a box. I feel that the work I do, moving from one to the other, is always additive, that I learned something about making a horror film that I bring to a musical biopic. I learned something making a fantasy film or a Marvel film that then becomes confidence in how to solve a problem in a dramatic scene. Making a movie like this, finding a bunch of amazing, committed, passionate young actors who are all supporting each other, lifting each other, the environment and the camaraderie on the set was a real joy and we felt purpose, because we felt that this music was about a world in which art could change things, not by directly protesting, but by getting under your skin, by reminding you that we can look within and ask ourselves some of these questions about the direction our world is heading without hitting us over the head with a history lesson or shaming us, so that we could be inspired to think about what our world could be. “A Complete Unknown” will be released in theaters December 25.November sees high box office turnout as people are returning to cinemas

Iceland votes for a new parliament amid disagreements on immigration, energy policy and the economyA Democratic state representative in Florida announced she was switching to the Republican Party just over a month after getting reelected—fortifying the GOP’s considerable grasp on the state’s legislature. Rep. Susan Valdés, who was recently re-elected in November for her final term representing parts of the Tampa metropolitan area, announced her party switch in a post on X on Monday, insisting she would not “waste my final two years in the Florida Legislature being ignored in a caucus whose leadership expects me to ignore the needs of my community.” Valdés’ departure from the Democratic Party comes only one week after she lost an election for chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party, Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell said in her own statement slamming the move as a “bait-and-switch.” Before the election in November, Valdés was an outspoken critic of President-elect Donald Trump and attended local events for Kamala Harris, the Tampa Bay Times reported. She even penned an op-ed in the newspaper only a year earlier comparing the Republican-lead government of Florida to the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in Cuba. Valdés seemed to address some of this disconnect in her statement on Monday, telling her constituents “I know I won’t agree with my fellow Republican House members on every issue, but I know that in their caucus, I will be welcomed and treated with respect.” See statement below... pic.twitter.com/JUVhsziSL7 The man arrested in connection with UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killing last week looked directly into the camera for his mugshot after being taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania Monday. Luigi Mangione was photographed after being escorted by cops to his preliminary arraignment in Hollidaysburg, less than 10 miles from the city of Altoona, where he was taken into custody. He was seen in the mugshot wearing a black scarf and coat, flashing a steely-eyed stare at the camera. After a tip from a McDonald’s worker in the city, police closed in and arrested Luigi Mangione. He has been charged with five crimes, including carrying a gun without a license, forgery, falsely identifying himself to the authorities and possessing “instruments of crime,” according to The New York Times . “Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and carrying multiple fraudulent IDs as well as a U.S. passport,” New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters Monday. “Upon further investigation, officers recovered a firearm on his person, as well as a suppressor, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder.” Not everyone wants to be a tipsy elf during the holidays. Beyoncé ’s mom Tina Knowles has raised eyebrows by “liking” an Instagram post reporting that her son-in-law Shawn Carter (better known as Jay-Z ) had been named in a rape lawsuit involving a 13-year-old and incarcerated former mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs , according to Page Six . The Knowles matriarch was screenshotted having tapped the heart icon on the post by ABC7 Chicago, which had a photo of Combs and Jay-Z with the headline, “Jay-Z, Diddy Named In Lawsuit Alleging Rape of Girl, 13.” Page Six was able to verify that Knowles’ official Instagram account had liked the post, but could not reach her for comment. The unexpected social media move by Knowles follows years of her supporting her daughter’s marriage to the rapper in the press . It also follows the infamous Knowles family elevator fight in 2014, in which Beyoncé’s sister Solange attacked the rapper on an elevator with Beyoncé present. That incident was never addressed publicly by Jay-Z or the family. Jay-Z has responded to the rape allegations in the new lawsuit, however, with a public statement in which he called the suit a “ blackmail attempt ” by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, and vehemently denied the claims. Pope Francis has sparked a new wave of concern for his health after appearing with a black bruise and a swollen neck at a Vatican event. Francis, who turns 88 later this month, appeared at the ceremony Saturday to appoint new cardinals. The Vatican later said in a statement that Francis had a minor fall and hit his chin on the bedside table. At the ceremony, the pontiff did not appear affected by the injury. He has struggled with health issues in the past and currently uses a wheelchair because of knee and back pain. He was hospitalized earlier this year due to breathing issues and also underwent surgery to repair an abdominal hernia. Francis’ predecessor, Pope Benedict, relinquished his post in 2013 at the age of 85, citing declining health. Benedict was the first pope in 600 years to resign. Hope Walz claimed Joe Rogan fans are a relationship “red flag.” The 23-year-old daughter of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz , shared her dating tip for screening men online with her nearly 200,000 followers on TikTok. “A litmus test for me and my friends for like years now has been if the guy we’re talking to follows Joe Rogan on Instagram, they’re a red flag and we should probably stop talking to them,” Walz said on Saturday. “And the times when they do follow him on Instagram and we haven’t stopped talking to them... it’s never ended well.” Rogan, a popular and controversial podcaster, hosts an eponymous show. Men make up 80 percent of his listeners. Walz’s anti-Rogan rule, she alleged has “never failed” her and her friends. “If they follow him we’re like, yeah, this person probably isn’t a great person and probably our values don’t align so we’re gonna move on from that. And honestly it’s worked out well for all of us.” Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Rogan hosted Donald Trump on his show, alongside a slew of MAGA loyalists. Ultimately the podcaster endorsed Trump over Kamala Harris and Walz’s father. A private funeral was being held on Monday for murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as police detained a suspect in the case, a source familiar with the family’s plans told NBC News . The suspect was first caught on surveillance cameras in Manhattan , and had evaded a massive police search. However, Pennsylvania police said they had detained a 26-year-old who was caught with a gun similar to the one used in the shooting. Investigators believe he was in the city for 10 days before the shooting, at one point lifting his mask to speak to a hostel employee. A photo from the camera capturing that moment has been circulated worldwide. Only Murders in the Building landed Golden Globe Award nominations for its three big stars—Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez—on Monday. But missing from the list was their supporting co-star Meryl Streep , who failed to extend her streak as the most nominated actor in the award show’s 80-year history. Streep, who plays Short’s on-screen (and possibly off-screen?) love interest, earned her 33rd Golden Globe nomination last year for Best Supporting Actress on the Hulu comedy. Gomez was a double nominee for her role in the Netflix film Emilia Pérez , which led in overall nominations with 10, followed by The Brutalist with seven and Conclave with six. Other big snubs included directors John M. Chu for Wicked: Part One and Denis Villeneuve for Dune: Part Two . Pamela Anderson was a surprise Best Actress nominee for The Last Showgirl , which the Baywatch star is hoping could lead to an Oscar nomination in the new year. President-elect Donald Trump launched a baffling claim Monday that " Democrats are fighting hard to get rid of the Popular Vote in future Elections." In a post on his Truth Social network, he added: “They want all future Presidential Elections to be based exclusively on the Electoral College !” In fact, the popular vote has in recent decades heavily favored Democrats and, this year, Trump became the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years. Democratic candidates have won the popular vote in five of the seven presidential elections in the 21st Century, losing two of those elections to Republicans who got fewer votes on a national level. Not only is there no Democratic effort to shore up the Electoral College, many prominent Democrats— including the party’s 2016 nominee for president Hillary Clinton , who won more votes than Trump but lost the Electoral College—have argued in favor of a popular vote for president. It is very likely that Trump and George W. Bush , who lost the 2000 popular vote to Al Gore, would have never been elected president were it not for the Electoral College. The jury acquitted Penny of criminally negligent homicide, after throwing out the manslaughter charge on Friday when the jury twice couldn’t come to a unanimous verdict. The charge of criminally negligent homicide would’ve put Penny behind bars for four years; the manslaughter charge had a maximum of 15 years. Penny, a former Marine, put Neely, who was homeless at the time, in a chokehold for six minutes after Neely said, “someone is going to die today,” in May 2023. No witness testified that Neely touched or made any move towards another passenger, though many testified that they were afraid of Neely during his rant. He did not have a weapon on him. Prosecutors noted that Penny kept Neely in the chokehold even after the passengers had left the train. But jurors sided with Penny’s defense—that he was justified in protecting his fellow passengers in the face of an erratic homeless man, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and previously had over two dozen encounters with the police. The defense also questioned if it was the chokehold that killed Neely. A famously lanky English soccer legend has cast his verdict on Barron Trump’s skills after a clip of the 18-year-old playing went viral again. Peter Crouch became a household name in England for his exploits on the pitch, and for his comical appearance. Crouch, now retired, towered over his opponents quite like a young Barron, who was seen playing the sport in a resurfaced clip that is doing the rounds again. In it, Barron—who is now 6-foot-9, dwarfs the other kids on the pitch as he shows off an impressive array of skills. On X, Crouch shared the clip Sunday and simply said: “Baller.” Barron is reportedly soccer mad , and instead of boozing and chasing girls at college he spends his time playing the soccer game FC25, formerly known as FIFA. He also rubbed shoulders with another former England star, Wayne Rooney, when the Manchester United legend was managing D.C. United in the MLS. “(Donald) asked me to give his son football lessons,” Rooney said. Resurfaced video shows Barron Trump playing soccer. pic.twitter.com/Ew2DkUPFUI

The film presents the events of Sept. 5, 1972, purely from the perspective of the ABC Sports production team, shining a light on what Fehlbaum calls “a watershed moment in journalism and its influential legacy.” At the heart of the story are three Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famers — Geoff Mason (played by John Magaro), then a young and ambitious producer; his boss, legendary TV executive Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard); and his mentor, Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin) — along with their German interpreter Marianne Gebhardt (Leonie Benesch). The film juxtaposes the high-tech broadcast capabilities of the time against the many lives at stake and explores the moral decisions that needed to be made in real time. “The live broadcasts marked a turning point in media reporting, bringing a new dimension to how such incidents are seen and understood by the public,” says Fehlbaum. “When the attack begins, a team of American sports reporters are suddenly responsible for the subsequent 22 hours of live coverage, switching their responsibilities from sporting events to geopolitics. I was interested in the unprecedented situation that the media faced: this was the first time an event of this nature was covered by a live broadcast.” Fehlbaum and his team spoke extensively with ABC Sports crew members who were on the ground in Munich, extracting details about their experience in that control room. As a result of the research, the director decided early on to narrate the film purely from the viewpoint of the control room. “We are constantly in the TV studio, almost like in a chamber play, the cameras the only eyes cast on the tragic events unfolding before us,” he says. “The spatial limitation of the narrative world to the ABC Sports TV studio means that we are confronted with the moral, ethical, professional, and, ultimately, psychological dilemmas of journalists who become aware of their responsibility only when switching from sports to crisis news.” When Israeli athletes were suddenly taken hostage, the ABC Sports broadcast team had to shift from sports reporting to live news coverage. Besides the horrors of witnessing and airing a terrorist attack live to millions of people, they also faced the possibility of inadvertently sharing law enforcement’s plans and movements with the terrorists themselves — who were thought to be able to watch the coverage within the Olympic Village — and potentially derailing the rescue mission. “As a filmmaker,” says Fehlbaum, “I felt an affinity with the complexity of the situation. On the one hand, I was critical of tragic events being processed as sensations. But, on the other, I was fascinated by the ambitions and dilemmas of the journalists to tell the story accurately.” Steven Spielberg’s recounts the aftermath of the event, but ’s Munich-based producers — Thomas Wöbke and Philipp Trauer of film-production company BerghausWöbke — believed that there was more to this story and it was ripe to be told for the big screen. Writer/director Moritz Binder and Fehlbaum were enlisted to write the screenplay, along with co-writer Alex David. The producers soon discovered an article written by Jimmy Schaeffler, a production runner on that day, who spoke highly of Mason. They met with Mason, a Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer, who described in vivid detail the experience of producing that 22 hours of live coverage. Mason, who came on board as a co-producer of the film, was impressed by the depth of the research and the power of the script. “After I read early versions, I was impressed by how deeply personal the experience was, not only to those of us involved in that production but in telling the story of what transpired. This is a story about the people in that control room and how we all reacted to what was happening in front of us. I am blessed to be one of the very few people still around to help tell that story.” The filmmakers also drew on biographies of Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famers Roone Arledge and Jim McKay and other ABC executives and crew. In addition, Schaeffler — the runner, who, disguised as an athlete, had smuggled film footage past the police cordons — offered first-hand insights, along with longtime CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus, who sat in the control room while his father, Jim McKay, was presenting the Olympics in the studio next door. ABC Sports, which paid handsomely for the rights to broadcast the 1972 Games live in the U.S., had built a production facility next to the Olympic Village. The massive technical apparatus set new industry standards with innovative technologies — slow motion, handheld cameras — coupled with sensational title designs. The filmmakers drew heavily from , who described the massive technical effort necessary for the first live broadcast of the Olympic Games and how the ABC crew improvised when the hostages were taken. On the storytelling side, Arledge set a precedent by focusing coverage on the athletes’ background stories in an effort to get viewers more invested — a strategy that’s now a staple of Olympics coverage. Throughout development, Mason ensured that the script captured the tone and tenor of that fateful day. Among key decisions was to have the entire plot unfold inside the studio complex. The only outside footage would be clips on the many monitors inside the control room. The filmmakers considered it absolutely necessary to incorporate the original ABC broadcast footage. However, accessing the archives and licensing the footage was a major challenge. Wöbke credits Mason and his relationship with ABC for the production’s access to the material. That access proved invaluable. “Viewing the broadcast footage made it possible to re-create the events within the control room,” says Fehlbaum. “We structured the screenplay accordingly. This led to a visual strategy: we planned the set in such a way that the original material from 1972 could run on the monitors, [blending] in with our directed scenes.” Watching the footage, Fehlbaum concluded that Jim McKay would be played not by an actor but through the original broadcast footage: “It seemed impossible to me to reproduce this performance with an actor. To convey the urgency of the moment, we knew we would also have to incorporate the original material of Jim into our film.” Except for one or two shots, no blue screens were deployed, allowing the actors to react to the actual footage on the monitors in real time. “Working with the real footage was a total game-changer,” says Magaro. “We didn’t know how we were going to tell this story without it. For me, the show was like another cast member. The language of the script changed as we got the footage. Going back to the research we had done, it was easy to pivot and change to calling the live footage, which was a unique challenge.” An additional editing challenge was incorporation of the archival material and selection of the clips — including the re-created sequences — for the monitor wall. “We knew very early on,” notes producer John Ira Palmer, “that the archival footage was going to deliver an emotional wallop that none of us could ever hope to re-create. Because we were also intercutting original footage with re-created footage, along with the story we were telling inside that newsroom, we knew it all needed to blend seamlessly.” When it came to casting the film, Fehlbaum says, “Geoffrey Mason had told us about a unique dynamic and the solidarity among the ABC crew. This feeling had to be reflected in the casting.” Although authenticity was a priority, some dramaturgical liberties were taken, including making some featured characters a composite of people present. Most notably, Mason represents the director of the coverage, and Gebhardt is a blend of several people who were in the control room in Munich. Preparing to portray Arledge, Sarsgaard read various materials about the sports executive and also spoke at length with a friend who works in a similar environment and has covered NHL hockey and the Olympics. “Learning how the system works, how the organism works, was interesting,” he says. “He told me about how Roone had changed things, in what ways he had changed things, and why he was a pioneer. A lot of that was about storytelling and Roone’s way of telling a story that emphasizes its being a satisfying story. That’s okay with sports, but it gets more complicated with journalism.” Magaro connected with Mason early in the process, mining his memory for details and inspiration. During shooting, Mason was sent dailies to review and, says Magaro, “was very encouraging as he was seeing footage roll out. “It was very important to me to capture Geoff’s situation,” Magaro continues, “the struggle of being a good producer, being a good broadcaster, and struggling with the moral dilemma of what’s right and what’s wrong in this situation.” In preparing for the role of Bader, Chaplin read everything he could on the longtime ABC Sports VP of Olympics operations, noting certain quotes from people who knew him. He found this quote from to be especially touching: “I’m sorry I retired. I had the best job in the world. There is no better job.” Says Chaplin, “[Bader] was a legendary specialist in live [coverage] and live reporting, and his love, enthusiasm, and excitement for the job was tangible. I hope audiences come away from the film thinking about someone like Marvin Bader, a thoroughly decent man who spent his life working hard behind the scenes bringing pleasure to millions, doing the very best he could.” For the character of Gebhard, who must manage working in an environment rife with power imbalances, Fehlbaum and Benesch decided that the best approach would be to place the actor into a situation like her character’s: without benefit of newsroom experience. However, Benesch did spend time with a translator in Berlin, asking “loads and loads of questions regarding the nature of her profession. “Everyone did the best they could,” she continues, speaking of the ABC Sports crew in 1972. “I think their intentions were good. I feel like our film might be able to make people feel what it’s like to be a journalist during breaking news.” Through Mason’s industry connections, the director and cast were able to sit in on production-control rooms, notably for and , to see what live TV is really like. “We studied the specific movements and gestures and the dynamics and atmosphere of sports broadcasts,” says Fehlbaum. “We were able to transport those to our set. We wanted to ensure that all the technical equipment on set was as authentic as possible and functional for the actors.” Magaro learned the language of calling a show —camera angles, graphics, music, transitions — becoming familiar with the sportscaster, director, and producer roles. “Anyone who steps into those control rooms knows that it is unlike anything else,” he notes. “If there was a false note, it wouldn’t have worked. Especially, people who have been in those situations would have seen it and immediately dismissed it as phony. Because of the time I spent in those control rooms and doing the research, I think we were able to capture what it was like to call a live broadcast in the 1970s.” The main shoot for took place over 33 days: 29 days at Bavaria Studios in Munich, one day in Penzing, and three in the Olympic Village, which looks virtually the same as it did in 1972, to re-create a few scenes from the original footage. Cinematographer Markus Förderer and Fehlbaum aimed to “tell the story as if we were a team of reporters covering the events of the day, making a documentary about the ABC crew,” Fehlbaum says. “We wanted the camera to react spontaneously to what was happening so we tried to feel the camera movements in the moment instead of planning everything out in advance.” Digital cameras were predominantly deployed for the control-room scenes. For any re-creations of archival footage, Förderer and his team often filmed in both 16mm and digital, sometimes side-by-side. They shot with several cameras to get different angles and had a film camera on set for every scene to have a reference for the color grade and to make sure that everything blended and looked filmic. “We never wanted it to feel dated,” Förderer says. “We wanted the audience to forget they’re watching a movie and believe they’re in the period. Our digital camera was 8K, very high resolution, but we added vintage lenses from the time. When I did research into the lenses used to film the Olympics, I found detailed descriptions of the gear because it was such a technological feat and a milestone in broadcasting.” Förderer even found one of the original Zoomar lenses on eBay — the first-ever zoom lenses were made in Munich — and converted it to match the modern camera. He and his team mixed lenses and switched between a 16mm sensor crop to a 35mm and also used anamorphic lenses. He operated the A camera throughout the shoot to be as unobtrusive and quick-moving as possible. The handheld aesthetic, along with the claustrophobic setting of the control room, fully immerses the audience and adds to the tension. To create the sensation of a real-time broadcast, two cameras were used. Even though scenes were cut and tightened in the editing room, the goal was the movement and energy of one continuous shot. “We mastered the entire scene and captured the actors’ performances by following the story as if we had only this one opportunity,” Förderer explains. “We wanted to embrace the energy, the imperfections, and the chaos of that day.” The style of shooting resulted in a large amount of footage, complicating the editing process in postproduction. Fehlbaum credits editor Hansjörg Weißbrich with bringing it all together: “Hansjörg [has] a fantastic sense of how to sift through the material, organize it, and find what was truly important for our film and what we didn’t need. He shaped the film significantly. It was important to us that the film be fast-paced because, as Geoffrey Mason told us, time was like a whirlwind. We wanted to convey that feeling.” Production designer Julian R. Wagner started his work on by poring over historical footage, photos (and personal recollections) from Mason, and witness interviews in police reports. Then he and his team did the technological research to connect it all. Wagner used original blueprints of the Olympic complex to reproduce the 1972 ABC Sports studio, which is no longer standing. Also, all props were created to the last detail. “Every button, every screen, absolutely everything you can see,” he says, “was a perfect copy of the control room, even down to the glued-on memos we saw in old images.” Old machines were sourced from all over the world, borrowed from collectors and found in museums and television-studio storage rooms. The equipment was meticulously cleaned, polished, and rewired to restore every item. “It was very important,” notes Fehlbaum, “to give today’s audience a feeling for the analog technology that prevailed at the time. Some of these devices were even made functional again for the shoot so that the actors could interact with them.” Wagner acknowledges that, after re-creating the ABC Studio space, the art department’s greatest challenge was to source the vintage technology and get it working: “Everything had to be real. For example, the screens in the ’70s looked different [from today’s], and we wanted to have the real screens. It was a gigantic puzzle. We collected all the individual parts and started to refurbish the old technology.” Filming of the studio set took place entirely on one stage at Bavaria Studios. The production filled the stage, with eight interconnecting spaces allowing continuous camera movements through corridors and into other rooms. In addition to the main studio spaces, Wagner and his team designed several small sets used in re-creations of original footage and generally visible only on monitors in the control room. The impact of the events of September 5, 1972, continues to this day. “We began to understand that the responsibility for being honest, truthful, and thorough in our coverage was more than any of us had imagined,” says Mason of how that day affected the way he views his work. “Going into every production I’m involved with, I think about the quality of our work and storytelling in a much more meaningful way.” The film also raises questions that are more important to address than ever, notes Fehlbaum. “Beside telling a fast-paced, thrilling story, the film sheds light on this historical event from a very specific perspective. I believe that the combination of these elements will create an exciting and simultaneously thought-provoking experience for audiences.”

Who did Trump pardon during his first presidential term? Many of us have felt it, and now it's official: "brain rot" is the Oxford dictionaries' word of the year. or signup to continue reading Oxford University Press said Monday that the evocative phrase "gained new prominence in 2024," with its frequency of use increasing 230 per cent from the year before. Oxford defines brain rot as "the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging." The word of the year is intended to be "a word or expression that reflects a defining theme from the past 12 months". "Brain rot" was chosen by a combination of public vote and language analysis by Oxford lexicographers. It beat five other finalists: demure, slop, dynamic pricing, romantasy and lore. While it may seem a modern phenomenon, the first recorded use of "brain rot" was by Henry David Thoreau in his 1854 ode to the natural world, Walden. Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl said that in its modern sense, "'brain rot' speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time." "It feels like a rightful next chapter in the cultural conversation about humanity and technology. It's not surprising that so many voters embraced the term, endorsing it as our choice this year," he said. The 2023 Oxford word of the year was "rizz," a riff on charisma, used to describe someone's ability to attract or seduce another person. Collins Dictionary's 2024 word of the year is "brat" –- the album title that became a summer-living ideal. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. When Kevin Campbell took a 1991 Chevy truck in trade at his dealership on Moncton's Salisbury Road in early November, he didn't have it for long. But not because it sold right away. The 1991 Chevrolet C1500 SS 454, listed for more than $28,000, was stolen off his lot on Nov. 14, around 1:30 a.m., he said. "This truck is very distinct. There wouldn't be another one, I bet you, in all of New Brunswick. If there was, there would be one or two, so very recognizable, very distinguishable truck, very desirable truck." Campbell's property is equipped with an AI-based security system. The cameras track movement and the system also flashes red and blue lights, sounds an alarm and allows a security guard to talk to trespassers. He said he's spent more than $10,000 on it. It didn't stop the theft. The stolen truck was a 1991 Chevrolet C1500 SS 454, listed for more than $28,000. (Campbell's Auto Sales) Both Campbell and the RCMP say they arrived at the scene within minutes, but the thieves had already left. "They knew they could steal this truck and get out of here, and it took them two minutes and 11 seconds," he said. "I'm mad, I'm upset, I'm — I'm frustrated, I'm every emotion you can imagine. This is a blow." WATCH | See a pickup truck get stolen in minutes: A 1991 truck was stolen in Moncton in under 3 minutes 13 hours ago Duration 2:35 A Moncton car dealer was surprised to see how quickly thieves made off with a pickup truck from his parking lot, after the theft was caught on security cameras. An expert provides tips on how to keep vehicles from being stolen. Codiac RCMP say they are investigating the theft. According to the latest statistics, there have been 386 motor vehicle thefts in Moncton, 84 in Dieppe and 56 in Riverview, so far in 2024. This data was last updated on Nov. 22. Bryan Gast is the vice-president for investigative services at Équité Association, an organization that works to stop crime on behalf of the Canadian property and casualty insurance industry. Gast, who is also a former police officer, was not surprised by how quickly the theft occurred. Brian Gast says there are things that may help to deter theft, including parking in a garage or a well-lit area, and installing devices such as a wheel lock, an aftermarket immobilizer or tracking device, or a pedal lock. (David Common/CBC) He said a vehicle that old could easily be stolen in a few minutes using simple tools but those with modern technology may get stolen even faster. "They've figured out how to do it the old-fashioned way as well as with new technology. So they can do it from both sides," Gast said. And the thieves don't always work under the cover of darkness. "What used to happen pretty much exclusively between 1:00 and 5:00 in the morning is now happening in broad daylight in busy areas ... they are so efficient and effective at the ability to steal vehicles that it doesn't take them long and it almost doesn't even look out of place." Most cars stolen in N.B. are used to commit other crimes, not for export Gast said vehicles manufactured after 2007 are often stolen by capturing the radio frequency of the key fob to start them, by reprogramming the key fob, or by gaining access to the vehicle's electronics and computer. The stolen vehicles are either used to commit another crime, take a joyride, sold part by part, exported to another country or by changing its vehicle identification number and selling it, he said. "I think this is just ... a really good example of the older models are still definitely targets." "This shows the importance of a standard to have all vehicles protected, have effective anti-theft measures right from the manufacture," he said. He said in 2007, a standard was introduced making it mandatory for manufacturers to have an immobilizer installed in vehicles, however thieves were able to adapt to that. Gast said that standard has not been modernized since then. Gast said although the authorities are doing their best, people should apply a layered approach to make the vehicles harder to steal. This Moncton man's prized car was stolen. "You don't have to do them all, but if you could do two or three of them ... those are all good options to make it harder for them to steal," he said. As a business owner, Campbell says the whole situation is upsetting. "It just all frustrates me to think that you work so hard to earn what you have and people just think they can come and take it from you, like, that is so discouraging and so [brazen]."top646 redeem code

Holiday travel season begins, a lost waltz and Trump's guitars | Hot off the Wire podcastPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley normally would have tossed his game-used cleats to the kid who asked for the pair as the star Philadelphia Eagles running back ran off the field and back to the locker room. Sorry, kid. Not today. Barkley kept his mucked-up cleats for good reason — he became the ninth running back in NFL history to top 2,000 yards rushing in a season, reaching the milestone with a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys. That rush gave Barkley 2,005 yards with one game left and stuck him exactly 100 yards from Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105, set in 1984 for the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley left the game after the run that got him past 2,000, finishing with 167 yards on 31 carries. “We definitely knew what the number was to at least get 2,000,” Barkley said. “We weren't leaving this field without at least accomplishing that. That's not the words from me, that's the words from the guys up front.” Whether Dickerson likes it or not — and the Hall of Famer made clear last week he does not — Barkley is coming for the record next weekend against the New York Giants. Well, maybe. The Eagles have clinched the NFC East and least the No. 2 seed in the conference, making that game mostly meaningless. Coach Nick Sirianni could opt to rest Barkley to protect him from injury ahead of the playoffs. “Whatever his decision is, I'm all for it,” Barkley said. “If his mindset is, go out and try it, we'll go out and try it. If his mindset is, let's rest and get ready for this run, I'll all for it, too.” Sirianni simply said, “we'll see.” His backward hat askew, Barkley laughed when asked if he wanted to break the record in a delicious twist against his old team. “I'm not overly trying to go get it,” Barkley said. “I'm not scared to. I would love to. But at the end of the day, we've got bigger things we're focusing on.” Barkley gets a shot at the record thanks to a 17th game of the season that Dickerson and the NFL did not have in 1984. Derrick Henry was the last running back to exceed 2,000 yards. He had 2,027 for the Tennessee Titans in 2020. Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson ran for 2,097 yards in 2012, the second most in an NFL season. Barkley, who left the Giants to sign a three-year deal with the Eagles for $26 million guaranteed, also set the NFL mark Sunday for most yards rushing in a player's first season with a new team. He ran for 176 yards and a touchdown in his first career game against the Giants. “I didn't come here or sign here just to rush for 2,000 (yards) and break a record,” Barkley said. “I'm here to do something special.” Barkley was drafted out of Penn State with the No. 2 overall pick in 2018. He was an instant success with New York and ran for 1,307 yards his rookie season. Barkley ran for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns and had 288 receptions for 2,100 yards and 12 TDs in six years with the Giants. He hit free agency after the Giants elected not to put a franchise tag on him. “I was in the dark,” Barkley said. “You don't know what's going to happen, you don't know where you're going to be. Everything is kind of up in the air.” His mission is clear — win a Super Bowl and maybe take down Dickerson. Sporting his trademark goggles and Jheri curl, Dickerson had seven straight 1,000-yard seasons in the 1980s, and the Hall of Famer is widely considered one of the best running backs ever. Dickerson finished with 13,259 yards, the ninth most in NFL history. Emmitt Smith holds the career record with 18,355 yards. “I don’t think he’ll break it. But if he breaks it, he breaks it,” Dickerson told the Los Angeles Times . “Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it. He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football.” In 1984, Dickerson topped 100 yards rushing 12 times to break O.J. Simpson’s 1973 record of 2,003 yards rushing in a season. Simpson set his record in 14 games for the Buffalo Bills before the NFL expanded to 16 in 1978. The NFL moved to 17 games in 2021. “The way football is right now, it’s kind of hard to rush for 2,000 yards in 14 games,” Barkley said. "So, whether it’s 16, whether it’s 17, it’s a feat that you can never take away from what I was able to do with the O-line. And only eight other players did it, so it’s a special moment.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

SPDR Galaxy Hedged Digital Asset Ecosystem ETF (NASDAQ:HECO) to Issue Dividend of $0.82South Korea’s parliament impeached Acting President Han Duck-soo, dealing another blow to a government already reeling after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s suspension less than two weeks ago for his brief martial law decree. Lawmakers voted 192-0 in favor of Prime Minister Han’s impeachment on Friday, according to National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik. He said before the vote that a simple majority in the 300-seat parliament was needed for the motion to pass, instead of the two-thirds required to suspend a president. The main opposition Democratic Party, which holds 170 seats, filed the motion to impeach Han on Thursday after he resisted pressure to immediately appoint three judges to the Constitutional Court, which would boost the likelihood of a ruling to finalize Yoon’s removal from power. Dozens of ruling party members protested by chanting slogans calling for Woo’s resignation and boycotting the vote. Han said in a statement that he would respect the National Assembly’s decision and suspend his duties. This is the first time an acting president has been impeached in South Korea. Han took over the role after Yoon was impeached by parliament following his Dec. 3 decision to impose martial law, a move that was reversed six hours later. The crisis has rattled financial markets and disrupted Seoul’s diplomacy efforts with partners like the U.S., all while the country’s facing mounting economic challenges and nuclear threats from North Korea. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who now steps in as interim leader, said he will work to minimize any confusion in government operations. He has also instructed the Joint Chiefs of Staff to increase monitoring of North Korea to prevent any provocations that might arise, he said in a statement. It would be nearly impossible for Choi to effectively manage all the roles including finance minister, acting president and acting prime minister simultaneously, according to Shin Yul, a political science professor at Myongji University in Seoul. “This is not a normal situation in a country,” he said. The South Korean won declined 0.6 percent against U.S. dollar after the vote. The currency earlier fell as much as 1.1 percent to the lowest since 2009 on Friday. Han said in an emergency public address Thursday that he would hold off on approving the three judges nominated by parliament. He added that the right to approve the judges rests with the president of the nation. Choi didn’t indicate in his statement whether he would follow Han’s position on the appointment of judges. The Democratic Party has called on Choi to make the appointments immediately. Court process The court, which can still rule with six judges, held its first pre-trial hearing Friday and has until June to make a decision. Yoon has vowed to fight in court, saying he declared martial law to protect the nation from an opposition that’s trying to paralyze the government with impeachment motions and cuts to budget plans. The case against the president is more important and urgent than any other impeachment motion involving government officials, Constitutional Court judge Cheong Hyungsik said at the hearing on Friday, according to a pool report. The court has scheduled the next preliminary hearing for Jan. 3. The political turmoil adds to the risks facing South Korea’s economy, which is expected to grow at a slower pace next year. Export momentum is weakening due to lower semiconductor demand, and companies are bracing for Donald Trump’s return to the White House and his protectionist policies. Recent surveys show confidence among South Korean consumers and businesses has slumped the most since the COVID-19 pandemic. Policymakers have pledged “unlimited liquidity” if needed to reassure market participants and mitigate the economic fallout. The central bank said it would cut its benchmark interest rate next year while considering financial risks and economic conditions. Shin said the political uncertainty could spark an outflow of foreign capital. This would worsen the balance sheets of companies due to their large amounts of dollar-denominated debt, he added.REVEREND Richard Coles has been left gagging as he struggled to swallow a fish eye alongside Tulisa during an I’m A Celeb trial. The Reverand and the Love Island star were the first to face the challenge last week. The new campers had to convince the original contestants to give up their beds to win three food portions. Advertisement Then GK and Coleen brought dishes to the junkyard to clean, and they went about pretending they had the rough end of the stick, making the campers feel sorry for them. In another challenge, they had to dump offal on poor Melvin. And then they recruited The Sun's very own Jungle Jane Moore compete in a challenge together for treats. In reply to this another fan said: "With teams of four it would be very cramped in there don’t you think? Only two would be able to sleep in the comfy bed or sit on the couch. Before his death today, Jimmy Carter defied illness and death for years. When his melanoma spread to his brain in 2015, he drew praise for announcing it publicly. Even as he underwent treatment, he continued to teach Sunday school in his home town's Baptist church. Within months, he announced that he was cancer-free. Four years later, Carter fell at least three times, at one point breaking a hip and at another requiring 14 stitches. Each time he bounced back, even showing up for a Habitat for Humanity home-building project shortly after one stumble. But he has slowly retreated from public life lately, making fewer and fewer appearances or statements and was unable to attend President Biden's inauguration in January 2021. However, he lived long enough to outlast two presidents who followed him and his own vice president, Walter Mondale. He became the longest-living president in March 2019 when he passed former President George H.W. Bush, who died four months before. Although Carter, nicknamed Jimmy Cardigan after once wearing a jumper for a televised speech, left the White House after one of the biggest landslide defeats of the modern era, he was one of very few US leaders to be memorialised while still alive. The evolution of his legacy was unusual as he had such a long period between the end of his unpopular presidency and the announcement at the weekend that he would undergo no further treatment to die peacefully at his home. Carter's time in the White House was marred by his struggles to respond to formidable challenges, including a major energy crisis, high inflation, and unemployment. He took office after Gerald Ford left the entire US government in disarray. Carter entered the Oval Office facing mounting challenges - an energy crisis, Soviet aggression and, above all, a deep mistrust of leadership by voters. In foreign affairs, he reopened US relations with China and tried to broker peace in the historic Arab-Israeli conflict, but was damaged late in his term by a hostage crisis in Iran. Carter's diagnosis of America's "crisis of confidence" did little to boost his flagging popularity, and in 1980 he was defeated in the general election by Ronald Reagan. Over the following decades, Carter built a distinguished career as a diplomat, humanitarian and author, pursuing conflict resolution in countries around the globe. He was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." Born in Plains, Georgia, in October 1924, Carter attended the US Naval Academy graduating in 1946. Already, he had a solid moral compass installed in him by his nurse mother, "Miz" Lillian. She set an example for her son by crossing the strict lines of segregation in 1920s Georgia to counsel poor African American women on health care. Shortly after passing out of the navy, he married Rosalynn Smith, having four children together. But tragedy struck in July 1953 as while he was preparing to serve as an engineering officer on the submarine Seawolf, his father, Earl, died from cancer. Carter returned home and was able to rebuild his family's struggling peanut warehouse business after a crippling drought. Ironically the legume became the symbol of his presidential campaign. Active in community affairs and a deacon at the Plains Baptist Church, he launched his political career with a seat on his local board of education. In 1962, he won the election to the Georgia State Senate as a Democrat, running for the governor's office four years later, finishing a disappointing third. The loss sent Carter into a depression, which he overcame by finding renewed faith as a born-again Christian. He ran again for the governorship in 1970 and won. A year later, Carter was featured on the cover of Time magazine as one of a new breed of young political leaders in the South, known for their moderate racial views and progressive economic and social policies. Initially, Carter was a political phenomenon, a new-generation Democrat who, after a single term as governor of the Peach State, shocked the political world by beating a host of better-known rivals to capture his party's presidential nomination in 1976. A year later, he would oust the incumbent Republican president, Ford. Over four years in office, he sought to restore trust in government following the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal, ushering in reforms meant to transform politics. He mediated the historic Camp David Accords, making peace between Israel and Egypt, an agreement that remains the foundation of Middle East relations. But a sour economy, rocketing inflation, and a 444-day hostage crisis in Iran where 52 American diplomats were held captive undercut his public support. Ultimately, it cost him his re-election bid, losing to Ronald Reagan in 1980. Carter spent his post-presidency, however, on a series of philanthropic causes around the world, like building houses for the poor, combating disease, promoting human rights in places of repression, monitoring elections and seeking to end conflicts. His work as a former president in many ways came to eclipse his time in the White House, eventually earning him the Nobel Peace Prize and rehabilitating his image in the eyes of many Americans. "Between the time he left office and entered hospice care, he got to sit back and enjoy the adulation of a grateful nation," Jeffrey Engel, the director for the presidential history centre at Southern Methodist University, said. "The passage of time smoothed out the rough edges of his political career. If Carter had died in 1982, there would be less adulation than he is receiving right now." Joseph Crespino, the Jimmy Carter Professor of History at Emory University, called his resilience "remarkable." "Instead of sulking about not winning the second term, he used his influence and prominence from his position in politics to help millions of people and win the Nobel Peace Prize," he said. When asked about regrets, Carter spoke of his in his autobiography "A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety." The former president said he was upset by how his kiss with the Queen Mother was portrayed. He wrote how he didn't regret puckering up to Her Majesty, describing it as "lightly on the cheek" as the pair said goodnight after dinner at Buckingham Place in May 1977. However, much like his presidency, its impact never left those affected most by his actions. To her dying day, the Queen Mother had two hates, as detailed in her 2009 biography - oysters and being kissed by a US president.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said her agency will need to start taking “extraordinary measures,” or special accounting maneuvers intended to prevent the nation from hitting the debt ceiling , as early as January 14, in a letter sent to congressional leaders Friday afternoon. "Treasury expects to hit the statutory debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23," Yellen wrote in a letter addressed to House and Senate leadership, at which point extraordinary measures would be used to prevent the government from breaching the nation's debt ceiling — which has been suspended until Jan. 1, 2025. The department has in the past deployed what are known as “extraordinary measures” or accounting maneuvers to keep the government operating. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. "I respectfully urge Congress to act to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," she said. The news comes after President Joe Biden signed a bill into law last week that averted a government shutdown but did not include President-elect Donald Trump’s core debt demand to raise or suspend the nation’s debt limit. The bill was approved by Congress only after fierce internal debate among Republicans over how to handle Trump's demand. “Anything else is a betrayal of our country,” Trump said in a statement. After a protracted debate in the summer of 2023 over how to fund the government, policymakers crafted the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which included suspending the nation's $31.4 trillion borrowing authority until Jan. 1, 2025. Notably however, Yellen said, on Jan. 2 the debt is projected to temporarily decrease due to a scheduled redemption of nonmarketable securities held by a federal trust fund associated with Medicare payments. As a result, “Treasury does not expect that it will be necessary to start taking extraordinary measures on January 2 to prevent the United States from defaulting on its obligations," she said. The federal debt currently stands at roughly $36 trillion — which ballooned across both Republican and Democratic administrations. And the spike in inflation after the coronavirus pandemic pushed up government borrowing costs such that debt service next year will exceed spending on national security. Republicans, who will have full control of the White House, House and Senate in the new year, have big plans to extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts and other priorities but debate over how to pay for them. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are having an enchanted holiday break with good friends. The pair was spotted out on a double date at BondST restaurant in New York City Dec. 27 with the Grammy winner’s longtime pal and collaborator Jack Antonoff and his wife, actress Margaret Qualley. Taylor wore an oversized, beige tweed, crystal-embroidered Stella McCartney blazer, paired with what appeared to be a black skirt, sheer, diamond-patterned black Sheertex tights and Marc Jacobs ankle-length platform boots, as seen in photos published by the Daily Mail. Travis matched the “Style” singer with a beige cardigan, paired with a black shirt, tan pants, dark shoes, glasses and a black cap. He and Taylor were photographed leaving the eatery, with the NFL star leading his girlfriend by the hand. Margaret bundled up in a dark coat with black tights, while Jack wore a yellow zip-up top, black jacket and jeans. Taylor had attended the couple’s wedding in August 2023, weeks before she was first photographed at one of the Kansas City Chiefs tight end’s games following romance rumors between the two. She and the NFL star have now been dating for over a year. They have supported each other’s careers consistently, with him attending more than a dozen concerts on her Eras tour, which ended Dec. 8, and Taylor being spotted at more than a dozen of Travis’ games, most recently Dec. 21, when the Chiefs beat the Houston Texans. While the “Blank Space” singer was absent from the Kansas City team’s Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, she did publicly express support for her boyfriend after he scored his 77th receiving touchdown-to break a record previously held by Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez-by liking several social posts celebrating the feat. Travis had also celebrated Taylor’s career milestone-her Eras Tour, which began in March 2023 and included 149 concerts held in 51 cities, had set a world record to become the highest-grossing music tour by generating more than $1 billion in revenue. The athlete threw the singer a star-studded, Eras-tour-themed party. He also gave her a shoutout on his and brother Jason Kelce’s podcast. “Obviously, it’s her music, her tour and everything but that was a full production, man,” Travis said on the Dec. 11 episode of New Heights. “It was the best tour in the world because of a lot of people.” He added, “And mostly because of Taylor.”AP News Summary at 5:31 p.m. ESTIn a quiet week for economic data, Wall Street’s focus shifted to the possibility of witnessing a "Santa Rally," the seasonal tendency for stocks to rise in the final days of December. Historically, the S&P 500 has gained 64 times in the past 96 years during the Dec. 24–Dec. 31 window, averaging a 0.85% return. The market began the week attempting a recover from the Federal Reserve's hawkish signals of fewer rate cuts in 2024. Yet, renewed volatility resurfaced on Friday, casting doubt on the Santa rally's resilience. Investors remain cautious, as markets weigh Fed policy outlook against uncertainty surrounding the incoming Trump administration's economic plans. Still, 2024 is shaping up to be a banner year. The S&P 500 is on track to match last year's 24% surge, setting up a two-year gain of 55%, the strongest since 1999. U.S. stocks are also outperforming global markets by the widest margin since 1997, driven by the enduring strength of U.S. economic fundamentals. On the leaderboards, Palantir Technologies Inc. PLTR has surged 360%, overtaking Nvidia Corp. NVDA , last year's top performer, which gained 175% in 2024. Consumer Confidence Slips U.S. consumer confidence, as measured by the Conference Board, declined in December, highlighting rising concerns about economic conditions . A deeper drop in the expectations index, a key forward-looking measure, signals potential weakness in 2025 amid fears of persistent inflation and steady, high interest rates. Tesla's Robotaxi Bet Elon Musk envisions a Tesla Inc. TSLA ’s robotaxi fleet allowing owners to earn $40,000 annually. Despite the bold prediction, experts question the feasibility of the technology and regulatory challenges, suggesting Musk's vision remains aspirational rather than immediately achievable in the near term. Trump's Tariff Impact Goldman Sachs projects the Trump administration will raise tariffs on Chinese imports, averaging a 20% hike, with higher rates for non-consumer goods. This could increase consumer prices by 1%-2%, strain industrial margins, disrupt supply chains and ignite Chinese retaliatory measures, the Wall Street firm says. Cadillac EV Success General Motors Co. GM ’s Cadillac Lyriq, priced at $60,000, became its best-selling EV in 2024 through the third quarter. The premium EV's success highlights a potential shift toward luxury electric vehicles as automakers target higher margins and affluent buyers. ALBANY — New York state government agencies will have to conduct reviews and publish reports that detail how they’re using artificial intelligence software, under a new law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Hochul, a Democrat, signed the bill last week after it was passed by state lawmakers earlier this year. The law requires state agencies to perform assessments of any software that uses algorithms, computational models or AI techniques, and then submit those reviews to the governor and top legislative leaders along with posting them online. It also bars the use of AI in certain situations, such as an automated decision on whether someone receives unemployment benefits or child care assistance, unless the system is being consistently monitored by a human. State workers would also be shielded from having their hours or job duties limited because of AI under the law. State Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, a Democrat who sponsored the bill, called the law an important step in setting up some guardrails in how the emerging technology is used in state government.Hurricanes visit the Panthers in Eastern Conference action

mnl top646 UCF head coach Gus Malzahn is resigning to become the new offensive coordinator at Florida State, sources told ESPN on Saturday. Malzahn will be FSU's primary playcaller, a role previously held by head coach Mike Norvell. This marks a distinct shift for Norvell, who has shaken up his staff in the wake of a 2-9 season that concludes Saturday night against Florida. Norvell worked with Malzahn back at Tulsa, when he was Malzahn's graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008. Editor's Picks FSU's Norvell fires both coordinators, WR coach 20d Mark Schlabach From 13-0 to 1-9: How historically bad has Florida State's collapse been? 11d Bill Connelly Recruiting intel: Five-stars flip watch; Georgia, Penn State pushing for a QB commit 7h Eli Lederman The move comes in the wake of two uneven seasons for Malzahn at UCF, as it went 6-7 last year and struggled this season in going 4-8. UCF lost eight of its last nine games to finish this year, and Malzahn would have been considered squarely on the hot seat if he had survived into 2025. His four-year tenure with the Knights ends at 28-24, including 5-13 in the Big 12 over the past two years. In 13 seasons as a college head coach, including stints with Arkansas State and Auburn, Malzahn is 105-62. He reached the BCS title game as Auburn's coach in 2013. Now Malzahn heads to Tallahassee and will attempt to help Norvell bounce back from a season in which the Seminoles went 1-7 in the ACC. FSU is just one year removed from a 13-1 season in which it fell just short of a College Football Playoff berth in a controversial decision. Malzahn is an experienced playcaller; he was Auburn's offensive coordinator and playcaller on its 2010 national title team. The move should help recharge FSU's offense, which never looked in sync in 2024. FSU entered Saturday ranked No. 131 in the country in total offense. In Malzahn's 19 years as a collegiate offensive coordinator or head coach, his offenses have averaged 447.7 yards. They've eclipsed 5,000 yards of total offense in a season 16 times, 6,000 yards eight times and 7,000 yards three times. His last three offenses at UCF have all ranked in the top-10 nationally in rushing. That should marry well with Norvell's pass game, which had been a specialty until the offense never got off the ground this season.

Pakistan rejects new US sanctions on its missile programme as ‘discriminatory’ While US opposes Pakistan’s missile programme, analysts believe it treats India’s long-range missiles programme differently Military personnel stand beside a Shaheen III surface-to-surface ballistic missile during Pakistan Day military parade in Islamabad, Pakistan March 23, 2019.— Reuters KARACHI: Pakistan has strongly reacted to the US decision to impose sanctions on the National Development Complex and three commercial entities, calling the move “unfortunate and biased” and warning that such policies have dangerous implications for strategic stability of the South Asian region and beyond. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700472799616-0'); }); The new sanctions have been imposed weeks before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. While the US opposes Pakistan’s missile programme, analysts believe it treats India’s long-range missiles programme differently. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement tweeted by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar late on Wednesday night said: “Pakistan’s strategic capabilities are meant to defend its sovereignty and preserve peace and stability in South Asia.” “The latest installment of sanctions defies the objective of peace and security by aiming to accentuate military asymmetries. Such policies have dangerous implications for strategic stability of our region and beyond,” the statement said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the fact that Pakistan’s strategic programme is a sacred trust bestowed by 240 million people upon its leadership. “The sanctity of this trust, held in the highest esteem across the entire political spectrum, cannot be compromised.” The statement further said: “We also regret the imposition of sanctions on private commercial entities. Similar listings of commercial entities in the past were based on mere doubts and suspicion without any evidence whatsoever. While claiming strict adherence to non-proliferation norms, licensing requirement for advanced military technology to other countries have been waived off in the past.” It said: “Such double standards and discriminatory practices not only undermine the credibility of non-proliferation regimes but also endanger regional and international peace and security.” Earlier on Wednesday, the United States said it was imposing additional sanctions related to Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme, targeting four entities that it said were contributing to the proliferation or delivery of such weapons. “The United States will continue to act against proliferation and associated procurement activities of concern,” the US Department of State said in a statement. “In light of the continuing proliferation threat of Pakistan’s long-range missile development, the United States is designating four entities for sanctions pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13382, which targets proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery,” it said. The statement further said, “Pakistan’s National Development Complex – which is responsible for Pakistan’s ballistic missile program and has worked to acquire items to advance Pakistan’s long range ballistic missile program – and Affiliates International, Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, and Rockside Enterprise – which have worked to supply equipment and missile-applicable items to Pakistan’s ballistic missile program, including its long range missile program – are being designated pursuant to E.O. 13382 Section 1(a)(ii) for having engaged, or attempted to engage, in activities or transactions that have materially contributed to, or pose a risk of materially contributing to, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction or their means of delivery (including missiles capable of delivering such weapons), including any efforts to manufacture, acquire, possess, develop, transport, transfer, or use such items, by Pakistan.” In September, Mathew Miller had said in a press briefing that “it has been our longstanding policy to deny support to Pakistan’s long-range ballistic missile program, and we will continue to use our sanctions and other – our other tools to ensure our national security cannot be – cannot be impacted, and that the US financial system cannot be used by proliferators.”

Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles make their second-to-last road trip of the regular season Sunday to face Derrick Henry and the Baltimore Ravens. The NFC East-leading Eagles (9-2) have won seven in a row and play four of their final six games in Philadelphia, traveling only about 125 miles to visit the Ravens (8-4) this weekend and the Washington Commanders in Week 16. Sunday's game features the NFL's two leading rushers. Barkley (1,392 yards) and Henry (1,325) are far ahead of Green Bay's Josh Jacobs (944) in third place. Henry leads the league with 13 rushing touchdowns. Barkley (10) is tied for fourth and Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts (11) tied for second. The matchup also features two of the top candidates for Most Valuable Player honors entering Week 13 in Barkley and Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson, who won his second MVP award last season. Their competition includes quarterbacks Josh Allen of Buffalo and Jared Goff of Detroit, with Allen widely considered the favorite. "Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are phenomenal football players that help their team win football games, and Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley are phenomenal football players that help their team win football games," Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. "Excited about the opportunity this week because it's our next one. It will be a really good opponent, really well coached, good players, good atmosphere that will be there. Excited about the opportunity this week. And we're going to have to be on it against a really good team." The showdown at M&T Bank Stadium also pits Baltimore's No. 1 offense (426.7 yards per game) and No. 2 scoring offense (30.3 points per game) against Philadelphia's No. 1 defense (274.6) and No. 6 scoring defense (18.1). The Eagles have held seven consecutive opponents to under 300 total yards, while the Ravens have gained at least 329 yards of offense in all 11 games. Philadelphia is coming off a 37-20 road win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night in which Barkley smashed the franchise record with 255 rushing yards. Baltimore also earned a prime-time win in Los Angeles, defeating the Chargers 30-23 in the "Harbaugh Bowl" on Monday night behind Jackson's three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing). Jackson said he's looking forward to the Barkley and Henry show. "I've known Saquon from high school. We were in the all-star game together and he jumped over somebody's head," Jackson recalled Wednesday. "So I've pretty much seen him before I even got to the league, college, anything. I've been knowing about Saquon, but Derrick Henry -- King Henry -- I'm with him every day and I'm seeing what he's capable of, so it's going to be a great matchup." Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith practiced Wednesday after sitting out Monday with a hamstring issue. Nose tackle Michael Pierce (calf) was designated to return from injured reserve. Tight end Charlie Kolar (broken arm) is out for several weeks and cornerback Arthur Maulet (calf) did not practice. The Eagles lost veteran defensive end Brandon Graham to a season-ending triceps injury Sunday. Wideout DeVonta Smith (hamstring) missed the win over the Rams and did not practice Wednesday. Neither did cornerbacks Darius Slay (concussion) or Kelee Ringo (calf). Philadelphia is 5-1 away from home this season -- 6-1 if you count their season-opening "home" victory against the Packers in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Baltimore is 4-1 at home. The Ravens hold a 3-2-1 lead in the series with the Eagles. They haven't met since Baltimore's 30-28 win in Week 6 at Philadelphia in 2020. --Field Level MediaWhile closing the Mamas’ three-day Flower Sales at Independence Park last Friday, the Association’s President, Mr. Maurice Horry, said he was rather disappointed at not having a Government Official from the Ministry of Climate Change or Ministry of Health capitalise on the event to promote the Government’s current policies on Climate Change and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). He said, as a former long-time Quarantine Officer, he is proud of all the mamas in his organisation who continue to promote Government policies through their flowers, fruit, and timber seedlings. “However, it would be especially important for the Government to use the event to encourage the mamas to do all they can to promote the nation’s policies on our green environment and healthy living,” he said. He said his organisation fulfilled its commitment by paying VT15,000 to the Ministry of Internal Affairs as a charitable organisation, to use the lawn below the Government Offices at Independence Park for three days. Asked why the mamas were not addressed, he suspected an "end-of-year fatigue," which is experienced by all Government employees at the end of each year. But he said it was an ideal opportunity for the Government to speak to the mamas, as they had come together for one purpose, which was to sell their plants. “We come together to sell our flowers to beautify homes, and we encourage both political leaders and public servants to use our gathering to promote the Government’s policies,” he said. He wished all mamas a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2025.Apple Clashes with Meta Over Privacy Concerns

Israel has agreed to a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon that will take effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday. Moments after U.S. President Joe Biden announced the ceasefire deal , which Israel's Cabinet approved late Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike slammed into the Lebanese capital. Residents of Beirut and its southern suburbs have endured the most intense day of Israeli strikes since the war began nearly 14 months ago, as Israel signaled it aims to keep pummeling Hezbollah before the ceasefire is set to take hold. At least 24 people have killed by Israeli strikes across Lebanon on Tuesday, according to local authorities. Hezbollah also fired rockets into Israel on Tuesday, triggering air raid sirens across the country’s north. An Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire would mark the first major step toward ending the regionwide unrest triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. But it does not address the devastating war in Gaza. Hezbollah began attacking Israel a day after Hamas’ attack. The fighting in Lebanon escalated into all-out war in September with massive Israeli airstrikes across the country and an Israeli ground invasion of the south. In Gaza, more than 44,000 people have been killed and more than 104,000 wounded in the nearly 14-month war between Israel and Hamas, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Here's the Latest: BEIRUT -- Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal between Israel and Hezbollah, describing it as a crucial step toward stability, the return of displaced people to their homes and regional calm. Mikati made these comments in a statement issued just after U.S. President Joe announced the truce deal. Mikati said he discussed the ceasefire agreement with Biden by phone earlier Tuesday. The prime minister reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to implementing U.N. resolution 1701, strengthening the Lebanese army’s presence in the south, and cooperating with the U.N. peacekeeping force. He also called on Israel to fully comply with the ceasefire and withdraw from southern Lebanon in accordance the U.N. resolution. JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security Cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, clearing the way for the truce to take effect. Netanyahu’s office said the plan was approved by a 10-1 margin. The late-night vote came shortly before President Joe Biden was expected to announced details of the deal in Washington. Earlier, Netanyahu defended the ceasefire, saying Israel has inflicted heavy damage on Hezbollah and could now focus its efforts on Hamas militants in Gaza and his top security concern, Iran. Netanyahu vowed to strike Hezbollah hard if it violates the expected deal. WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Waltz, President-elect Donald Trump’s designate to be national security adviser, credited Trump’s victory with helping bring the parties together toward a ceasefire in Lebanon. “Everyone is coming to the table because of President Trump,” he said in a post on X on Tuesday. “His resounding victory sent a clear message to the rest of the world that chaos won’t be tolerated. I’m glad to see concrete steps towards deescalation in the Middle East.” He added: “But let’s be clear: The Iran Regime is the root cause of the chaos & terror that has been unleashed across the region. We will not tolerate the status quo of their support for terrorism.” BEIRUT — Israeli jets targeted a building in a bustling commercial area of Beirut for the first time since the start of the 13-month war between Hezbollah and Israel. The strike on Hamra is around 400 meters (yards) from the country’s central bank. A separate strike hit the Mar Elias neighborhood in the country’s capital Tuesday. There was no immediate word on casualties from either strike, part of the biggest wave of attacks on the capital since the war started. Residents in central Beirut were seen fleeing after the Israeli army issued evacuation warnings for four targets in the city. Meanwhile, the Israeli army carried out airstrikes on at least 30 targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs Tuesday, including two strikes in the Jnah neighborhood near the Kuwaiti Embassy. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that 13 people were injured in the strikes on the southern suburbs. BEIRUT — Hezbollah has said it accepts the ceasefire proposal with Israel, but a senior official with the group said Tuesday that it had not seen the agreement in its final form. “After reviewing the agreement signed by the enemy government, we will see if there is a match between what we stated and what was agreed upon by the Lebanese officials,” Mahmoud Qamati, deputy chair of Hezbollah’s political council, told the Al Jazeera news network. “We want an end to the aggression, of course, but not at the expense of the sovereignty of the state.” of Lebanon, he said. “Any violation of sovereignty is refused.” Among the issues that may remain is an Israeli demand to reserve the right to act should Hezbollah violate its obligations under the emerging deal. The deal seeks to push Hezbollah and Israeli troops out of southern Lebanon. JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he would recommend his Cabinet adopt a United States-brokered ceasefire agreement with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, as Israeli warplanes struck across Lebanon, killing at least 23 people. The Israeli military also issued a flurry of evacuation warnings — a sign it was aiming to inflict punishment on Hezbollah down to the final moments before any ceasefire takes hold. For the first time in the conflict, Israeli ground troops reached parts of Lebanon’s Litani River, a focal point of the emerging deal. In a televised statement, Netanyahu said he would present the ceasefire to Cabinet ministers later on Tuesday, setting the stage for an end to nearly 14 months of fighting. Netanyahu said the vote was expected later Tuesday. It was not immediately clear when the ceasefire would go into effect, and the exact terms of the deal were not released. The deal does not affect Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, which shows no signs of ending. BEIRUT — Lebanon’s state media said Israeli strikes on Tuesday killed at least 10 people in Baalbek province the country’s east. At least three people were killed in the southern city of Tyre when Israel bombed a Palestinian refugee camp, said Mohammed Bikai, a representative of the Fatah group in the area. He said several more people were missing and at least three children were among the wounded. He said the sites struck inside the camp were “completely civilian places” and included a kitchen that was being used to cook food for displaced people. JERUSALEM — Dozens of Israeli protesters took to a major highway in Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening to call for the return of the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, as the country awaited news of a potential ceasefire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. Protesters chanted “We are all hostages,” and “Deal now!” waving signs with faces of some of the roughly 100 hostages believed to be still held in Gaza, at least a third of whom are thought to be dead. Most of the other hostages Hamas captured in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack were released during a ceasefire last year. The prospect of a ceasefire deal in Lebanon has raised desperation among the relatives of captives still held in Gaza, who once hoped that the release of hostages from Gaza would be included. Instead of a comprehensive deal, the ceasefire on the table is instead narrowly confined to Lebanon. Dozens of Israelis were also demonstrating against the expected cease-fire, gathering outside Israel’s military headquarters in central Tel Aviv. One of the protesters, Yair Ansbacher, says the deal is merely a return to the failed 2006 U.N. resolution that was meant to uproot Hezbollah from the area. “Of course that didn’t happen,” he says. “This agreement is not worth the paper it is written on.” FIUGGI, Italy — Foreign ministers from the world’s industrialized countries said Tuesday they strongly supported an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah and insisted that Israel comply with international law in its ongoing military operations in the region. At the end of their two-day summit, the ministers didn’t refer directly to the International Criminal Court and its recent arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister over crimes against humanity . Italy had put the ICC warrants on the official meeting agenda, even though the G7 was split on the issue. The U.S., Israel’s closest ally, isn’t a signatory to the court and has called the warrants “outrageous.” However, the EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell said all the other G7 countries were signatories and therefore obliged to respect the warrants. In the end, the final statement adopted by the ministers said Israel, in exercising its right to defend itself, “must fully comply with its obligations under international law in all circumstances, including international humanitarian law.” And it said all G7 members — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States – “reiterate our commitment to international humanitarian law and will comply with our respective obligations.” It stressed that “there can be no equivalence between the terrorist group Hamas and the State of Israel.” The ICC warrants say there's reason to believe Netanyahu used “starvation as a method of warfare” by restricting humanitarian aid and intentionally targeted civilians in Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza — charges Israeli officials deny. BEIRUT — An Israeli strike on Tuesday levelled a residential building in the central Beirut district of Basta — the second time in recent days warplanes have hit the crowded area near the city’s downtown. At least seven people were killed and 37 wounded in Beirut, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. It was not immediately clear if anyone in particular was targeted, though Israel says its airstrikes target Hezbollah officials and assets. The Israeli military spokesman issued a flurry of evacuation warnings for many areas, including areas in Beirut that have not been targeted throughout the war, like the capital’s commercial Hamra district, where many people displaced by the war have been staying. The warnings, coupled with fear that Israel was ratcheting up attacks in Lebanon during the final hours before a ceasefire is reached, sparked panic and sent residents fleeing in their cars to safer areas. In areas close to Hamra, families including women and children were seen running away toward the Mediterranean Sea’s beaches carrying their belongings. Traffic was completely gridlocked as people tried to get away, honking their car horns as Israeli drones buzzed loudly overhead. The Israeli military also issued warnings for 20 more buildings in Beirut’s suburbs to evacuate before they too were struck — a sign it was aiming to inflict punishment on Hezbollah in the final moments before any ceasefire takes hold. TEL AVIV, Israel — The independent civilian commission of inquiry into the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel has found Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly responsible for the failures leading up to the attack, alongside former defense ministers, the army chief and the heads of the security services. The civil commission presented its findings today after a four-month probe in which it heard some 120 witnesses. It was set up by relatives of victims of the Hamas attack, in response to the absence of any state probe. The commission determined that the Israeli government, its army and security services “failed in their primary mission of protecting the citizens of Israel.” It said Netanyahu was responsible for ignoring “repeated warnings” ahead of Oct. 7, 2023 for what it described as his appeasing approach over the years toward Hamas, and for “undermining all decision-making centers, including the cabinet and the National Security Council, in a way that prevented any serious discussion” on security issues. The commission further determined that the military and defense leaders bear blame for ignoring warnings from within the army, and for reducing the army’s presence along the Gaza border while relying excessively on technological means. On the day of the Hamas attack, the report says, the army’s response was both slow and lacking. The civil commission called for the immediate establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the Oct. 7 attack. Netanyahu has opposed launching a state commission of inquiry, arguing that such an investigation should begin only once the war is over. JERUSALEM -- The Israeli military says its ground troops have reached parts of Lebanon’s Litani River — a focal point of the emerging ceasefire. In a statement Tuesday, the army said it had reached the Wadi Slouqi area in southern Lebanon and clashed with Hezbollah forces. Under a proposed ceasefire, Hezbollah would be required to move its forces north of the Litani, which in some places is some 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the Israeli border. The military says the clashes with Hezbollah took place on the eastern end of the Litani, just a few kilometers (miles) from the border. It is one of the deepest places Israeli forces have reached in a nearly two-month ground operation. The military says soldiers destroyed rocket launchers and missiles and engaged in “close-quarters combat” with Hezbollah forces. The announcement came hours before Israel’s security Cabinet is expected to approve a ceasefire that would end nearly 14 months of fighting. BEIRUT — Israeli jets Tuesday struck at least six buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs Tuesday, including one that slammed near the country’s only airport. Large plumes of smoke could be seen around the airport near the Mediterranean coast, which has continued to function despite its location beside the densely populated suburbs where many of Hezbollah’s operations are based. The strikes come hours before Israel’s cabinet was scheduled to meet to discuss a proposal to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The proposal calls for an initial two-month ceasefire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. There were no immediate reports of casualties from Tuesday’s airstrikes. FIUGGI, Italy — EU top diplomat Josep Borrell, whose term ends Dec. 1, said he proposed to the G7 and Arab ministers who joined in talks on Monday that the U.N. Security Council take up a resolution specifically demanding humanitarian assistance reach Palestinians in Gaza, saying deliveries have been completely impeded. “The two-state solution will come later. Everything will come later. But we are talking about weeks or days,” for desperate Palestinians, he said. “Hunger has been used as an arm against people who are completely abandoned.” It was a reference to the main accusation levelled by the International Criminal Court in its arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister. Borrell said the signatories to the court, including six of the seven G7 members, are obliged under international law to respect and implement the court’s decisions. Host Italy put the ICC warrants on the G7 agenda at the last minute, but there was no consensus on the wording of how the G7 would respond given the U.S., Israel’s closest ally, has called the warrants “outrageous.” Italy, too, has said it respects the court but expressed concern that the warrants were politically motivated and ill-advised given Netanyahu is necessary for any deal to end the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. “Like it or not, the International Criminal Court is a court as powerful as any national court,” Borrell said. “And if the Europeans don’t support International Criminal Court then there would not be any hope for justice,” he said. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?" 1914 translation by H.
