There’s a word for this decline: enshittification. The term, made famous by the tech critic Cory Doctorow in 2023, was just selected by Macquarie Dictionary ― Australia’s oldest! ― as its 2024 word of the year . Here’s how they defined it: noun Colloquial: the gradual deterioration of a service or product brought about by a reduction in the quality of service provided, especially of an online platform, and as a consequence of profit-seeking. The Macquarie committee politely described the phrase as “a very basic Anglo-Saxon term wrapped in affixes which elevate it to being almost formal; almost respectable.” As Doctorow described it in 2023 , enshittification is about more than the outcome. It’s a deliberate business strategy in which everyone loses except the platform and its shareholders (at least in the short term). First, says Doctorow, a digital service gains a foothold by making itself useful to its users. Having locked them in, the platform leverages those users to appeal to businesses. Then, in its third and final step, the platform abuses both businesses and customers to extract all the value for itself. “We’re all living through the enshittocene, a great enshittening, in which the services that matter to us, that we rely on, are turning into giant piles of shit,” Doctorow remarked in a 2024 lecture after the word went viral. “Today’s giants are not constrained by competition,” he added. “They don’t care. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Five New Yorkers have been charged with felony possession of stolen property, conspiracy and other related crimes, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said. The bust served as a reminder to shoppers as the holiday shopping season kicks off in earnest with Black Friday this week to make sure they are supporting legitimate establishments, she said. “When a deal seems too good to be true, I guarantee you, it’s too good to be true,” Katz said. Nationally, businesses lose roughly $100 billion and the average family pays $500 more a year because of the impact of organized retail theft, according to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who joined the district attorney and other law enforcement officials in Queens. The Democrat said the arrests also marked the first time anyone has been charged under a new criminal statute of fostering the sale of stolen goods that she recently signed into law to help crack down on retail theft. “This is real simple. As I pen down these words, I do so with the awareness that you are not an ordi­nary year. Your arrival brought hope, but as the days rolled, that hope was replaced with hardship, struggle, per­severance and lessons. In this letter, as tricky as it may be, I will attempt to recount the key events that shaped you – the milestones that defined not only my life but the collec­tive experience of a nation grappling with economic hardship, political un­certainty, and social upheaval. Nigeria stands at a crossroads, and you will be remembered as a year that tested our spirit and resolve. This is not just a recollection of facts but a narrative of survival in a land where, at times, the future seemed uncertain. You were, indeed harsh, but we, the Nigerian people, have shown re­markable resilience and perseverance. Despite the economic hardships you brought, with inflation, unemploy­ment, and rising living costs affecting all, we have stood strong. Your visita­tion of economic hardships worsened by 34-40% inflation rate and supply chain disruptions, an embarrassing unemployment rate of 40%, and rising living costs affected both the high and the low. Almost all households felt your pinch. Nigeria›s food inflation rate rose to close to 40% by mid-year, pushing millions into poverty. National Bureau of Statistics reports indicated that over 71 million Nigerians faced food insecurity by the third quarter. The exchange rate rose by over 60%. Yet, amid these challenges, the Nigerian people showed remarkable resilience and perseverance. To put it into context, essential com­modities such as rice, maize, and garri doubled in price within months. The petrol price fluctuated between ₦700 to ₦1200 per litre, severely impacting transportation and logistics. Even sachet water, popularly called ‹pure water›, became a luxury for many, re­flecting the depth of economic strain. You made our economic thinkers and planners look clueless. Thank God we, the people, showed understanding with them. You brought needless political con­tentions –the Rivers crisis, contentious elections in Edo and Ondo states, the Kano Emir drama, the Old-New-Old national anthem, and “Endbadgover­nance”demonstrations. An attempt to reform our tax system highlighted our stubborn ethnic fault lines. You were not short of drama, both relevant and irrelevant. The reinstatement of the old national anthem left citizens divid­ed, as critics viewed it as distracting from pressing governance issues. However, amid these contentions, the Nigerian people stood united, showing remarkable solidarity. Despite the divi­sive nature of some of these events, we have remained a united front. Poverty and hunger became our companions, resulting in three deadly stampedes during palliative distribu­tions in Oyo, Anambra, and the Feder­al Capital Territory (FCT), leaving no fewer than 60 people dead. Unemploy­ment among the youth reached over 45%, with many university graduates resorting to menial jobs or leaving the country in search of greener pastures, contributing to the ongoing ‹Japa› wave. At the global scene, you delivered historic elections and global unrest. People in more than 60 countries— representing almost 50 per cent of the world’s population—went to the polls during the year. Voters in Mexico and the United Kingdom picked new leaders, while a former U.S. president was invited by voters back to the White House. In Nigeria, voter turnout in lo­cal elections dipped to a record low of 28%, reflecting growing disillusion­ment with governance. This disin­terest was amplified by widespread insecurity, with over 1,500 reported cases of abduction and banditry dis­rupting daily life. Villages in Zamfara, Kaduna, and Borno faced relentless attacks, forcing thousands into inter­nally displaced persons (IDP) camps. “Lakurawa” gained a strong foothold in parts of North-West states. Some strange things happened that we did not foresee. Greece extended adoption rights to same-sex couples, and Thailand legalised same-sex marriage, becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to do so. You gave LGBTQ+ rights activists something to celebrate. This felt strange in this part of the world, where same-sex relations remain criminalised, and social acceptance lags far behind. In Nigeria, lawmakers intensified ef­forts to uphold conservative values, with proposed bills aimed at further restricting LGBTQ+ rights. The dis­parity in cultural values highlighted the widening gap between regions of the world, reflecting the complex lay­ers of societal evolution. You saw the world in turmoil, and the Russian vs Ukraine war continued unabated. This war brought about lots of military posturing, leading some to fear nuclear conflict between Rus­sia and NATO. The conflict between Israel, Hamas, and Iran ramped up to greater heights. The Middle East is in commotion, with the war extending to Lebanon and Israel vowing not to stop until it wipes Hamas and Hezbollah out. Iran has shown its willingness to confront Israel, framing itself as the watchdog of the Middle East against Israel’s aggression. You also witnessed the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, raising fears of extremist groups seizing power. Reports from the UN suggested that over 300,000 Syrian refugees fled to neighbouring countries by year-end, adding to the growing refugee crisis. But amid it all, you allowed some of my compatriots to think and look at things differently, to learn that hard work does not kill and bad governance is for a season. Despite the odds, small businesses grew by 7% in sectors like agriculture and technology, offering a glimmer of hope. Despite the increase in tariffs and persistent collapse of the national grid, there has been a mar­ginal improvement in power output in homes and factories. The healthcare sector witnessed significant transformation in the past few months of 2024 because of incisive, superlative reforms and pro­grammes. So far, 53,000 health work­ers have been re-trained—an impres­sive number—to deliver integrated, high-quality services. The Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Initiative, which offers free caesarean sections to all eligible Nigerian women meeting the criteria, and the Nigeria Climate Change and Health Vulnera­bility and Adaptation (V&A) Assess­ment Report were launched. These initiatives represent a step forward in our healthcare system, offering hope for the future. Your successor, 2025, is shaping up to be quite the mixed bag — it’s like the year is expecting a baby, but no one knows if it’ll be a bundle of joy or a handful of trouble. Nigeria is trying really hard to stop putting all its eggs in the oil basket. There’s a lot of noise about agriculture, tech, and manufac­turing stepping up. With this African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) getting more action, we might see Nigeria flexing as West Af­rica’s trade big brother. But let’s be honest — oil and gas aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Dangote Refinery finally kicking into gear might help us cut down on those expensive imported petroleum products. If it plays out right, that could mean fewer trade deficits and more jobs, which we desperately need. But you know how it is with oil — pric­es are like Lagos traffic, unpredictable and everywhere. Plus, the world’s mov­ing towards greener energy, so we’ve got to figure out how to keep the mon­ey flowing long-term. Now, on the money front, I won’t sugarcoat it. Inflation and the ex­change rate will probably keep danc­ing around, and not in a fun way. The Central Bank will try to keep things under control, but they’ll need se­rious foreign investment and more non-oil exports to make it work. The tech space is looking exciting, though. With all these young, sharp minds and everyone glued to their phones, Lagos and Abuja are becoming mini–Silicon Valley — fintech, e-commerce, aggro­tech, you name it. Politically, Nigerians are still out here demanding real change. Anti-cor­ruption will stay a hot topic — we’re all tired of the same old stories. There’s also this growing pressure for elector­al reforms and better public services. Civil society is getting louder, and I’m here for it. But security? Whew. That’s going to be a big one. Between insur­gency in the Northeast, banditry up North, and secessionist noise in the Southeast, the government has its hands full. It will take more than mili­tary action — they must dig into why these issues keep popping up. On top of that, some states are push­ing harder for more control over their resources and policies. The whole de­centralisation and restructuring de­bate might heat up. Meanwhile, you can bet politicians are already gearing up for 2027. Alliances will shift — it’s like watching chess, but with higher stakes. Look, Nigeria has its share of problems—inequality, environmen­tal issues, governance struggles. But the potential? It’s huge. We’ve got the people and the energy, and if we can channel it right, the sky’s the limit. Here’s hoping 2025 is more of a blessing than a headache. As I look ahead to 2025, I do so with cautious optimism. While the road ahead remains uncertain, I am reminded that even in the darkest of times, resilience shines through. So, to everything we have passed through, thank you, 2024, for setting us free. 2025, if you’re reading, please be more lib­eral to us as a nation and as a people. Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has been carrying the Bucks on his back this season, leading his team to wins in 10 of their last 12 games. Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks Season Stats: 28.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 8.1 apg Following Doncic's return to the court, the Mavericks put together a seven-game win streak. There's no question the Slovenian guard is one of the most prolific scorers in the league, making him one of the top five leaders in points per game. Fans often question his ability defensively, always making his case for an MVP title controversial, but the consistency offensively is always there. 4. Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics Season Stats: 28.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 5.6 apg This season we've been able to see Tatum really emerge as the team leader, helping keep his team comfortably seated at the No. 2 spot in the East. After coming off an NBA Championship season, the Celtics roster has taken a few severe hits early in the season with players like Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Kristaps Porzingis all missing games due to injury. That said, Tatum has been putting the team on his back, stringing together some huge wins behind some incredible performances of his. Tatum leads the Celtics in almost every stat category including scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals. He's making a very strong case to add an MVP trophy to his hardware case. 3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder Season Stats: 29.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 6.5 apg Offensive consistency is the first thing that comes to mind when bringing up what Gilgeous-Alexander is doing in Oklahoma City this season. It's very normal to see him come out night after night and score between 25-30 points, easily. What's been even more impressive is his playmaking and closing skills this year. The Thunder are coming off a big playoff run from last season, and haven't seemed to miss a beat behind the offensive production from Gilgeous-Alexander. Fans are interested in seeing if the dominance can translate into more success from the Thunder, but they definitely have an MVP-caliber player just based on the first quarter of the season. 2. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks Season Stats: 32.6 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 6.6 apg If you thought Antetokounmpo couldn't get any better than he already has been in previous seasons, you've thought wrong. The "Greek Freak" has shown massive improvement in his shot selection, shooting 61.1% from the field. Not only does he now lead the league in scoring, but he's leading his team up the Eastern Conference standings, as the Bucks now sit at No. 6 in the East. Critics initially believed the Bucks would need to become playoff contenders in order for Antetokounmpo to make a real case for the MVP title this year, but after leading his team to win 10 out of 12 of the Bucks' last games, that may not be an issue any longer. 1. Nikola Jokić, Denver Nuggets Season Stats: 29.9 ppg, 13.4 rpg, 10.4 apg Not only has Jokić fully emerged as the front-runner in the NBA MVP race so far, but you could also make a case for him being the most impactful player in the league. Principles Integrity, a firm hired to act as the City of London’s Integrity Commissioner, has ruled that Stevenson’s persistent questioning of Deputy City Manager of Social and Health Development Kevin Dickins and an accompanying social media post that identified him by name, constitutes harassment and bullying. Deputy City Manager, Social and Health Development Kevin Dickins (Daryl Newcombe/CTV News London) “It has been alleged that the Councillor demonstrates a pattern of behaviour that is inappropriate, unwarranted, unwelcome, unprofessional, not conducive to respectful Council and Staff relations, and is creating a toxic work environment for civic administration,” the Integrity Commissioner writes. “We find that the Councillor’s conduct constitutes harassment, bullying, and targeting, and that this pattern of behaviour is in contravention of the Code of Conduct,” the report concludes. It recommends council suspend Stevenson’s pay for 30 days. “I disagree with the findings,” Stevenson tells CTV News after the report was posted on the council agenda. “It's not clear where I crossed the line or how any of us (councillors) could avoid this going forward,” Stevenson adds. “And a month's pay? This could have a chilling effect on people who want to run for office, who want to make change.” A complaint was received on May 30, 2024 from Deputy City Manager of Social and Health Development, Kevin Dickins. Dickins alleged that Stevenson’s conduct towards administrative staff amounted to harassment and violated the Council Code of Conduct. Dickins’ complaint cited a specific incident on social media when Stevenson posted an altered quote from a CTV News article that added capital letters and emojis to suggest shock, chagrin, shame, and embarrassment. I’m (sic) my role, like yours I am often required to speak to media, while I can’t control what they publish, I do ask that as someone who is on the same team as I am refrain from using it in such an inappropriate manner and to position me in such a way personally. You’ll notice staff do not do this to any member of council. Your prompt attention to this is appreciated. On April 22, Stevenson replied by email: My social media post was a direct quote from the news article that I shared.... I’m not understanding what your complaint against me would be. I can assure you that I certainly did not intend to upset you in any way. In the report the Integrity Commissioner determined, “the Councillor editorialized the quote by the addition of provocative emojis; gratuitously included the staff member’s name (completely unnecessarily, if she had simply referenced the article), and unfairly implied that the views advanced were the staff member’s own, rather than reflecting the widely acknowledged prevailing view across the Province.” “I didn't think that was going to be either bullying, harassing, or targeting. It was an undecided matter of council, something that was going to be coming to us in a few months that's important to Londoners,” Stevenson explains. In addition the report states, “The post appeared to suggest that this individual was responsible for the continuing problem of encampments in the City. Naming the employee left him vulnerable to targeting by members of the public.” A photo of graffiti written in black marker on a streetlight pole is included in the report. Picture of graffiti on a streetlight pole (Source: Integrity Commissioner Report) It reads, “(Redacted) is responsible for 100s of homeless deaths.” The Integrity Commissioner also describes, “a clear pattern in which the Councillor takes the opportunity, even where an issue only relates tangentially to homelessness or shelters, to ask questions which allow her to repeat her concerns around the encampment issue. “I'm happy to keep (the) Deputy City Manager's names and all staff off my social media,” Stevenson concedes. “But to be less persistent in my questioning, I don't think I have since I got this complaint May 31.” The report findings include, “Although her words and tone may be moderated and sound respectful, the constant revisiting of the issue amounts to her harping on something that has been well-canvassed already.” It was posited that administrative staff experiencing repeated questions around the issue would interpret them as harassment. “We're governing a $1.4 billion budget, and I'm not going to apologize for asking questions about how that money is being spent or the services that are being offered when we're in a [homelessness] crisis that is increasingly getting worse,” Stevenson says. “A member of Council is entitled to ask probing questions and to seek relevant information in order to make informed decisions. The role of a member of Council includes that ability to ask questions but not to interrogate; to question the reasoning that supports a staff recommendation but not to publicly question staff’s motives or competence,” the Integrity Commissioner writes. Council will meet on December 17 to consider the report and potentially a punishment. Although the integrity commissioner recommends one month without pay, violating the code can result in punishments ranging from a formal reprimand up to three months without pay. This is the second time Stevenson’s social media posts have been found to have violated the Council Code of Conduct. In 2023, she received a formal reprimand from council for posting photos on social media of recognizable homeless individuals in a way that disregarded the impact the post could have on the individuals involved by linking them to criminality. Stevenson has filed a complaint to the Ontario Ombudsman about the 2023 Integrity Commissioner’s investigation, “I feel it was very personal. I don't feel it was fact based. And now you're going to say we can take away a councillor's ability to make their mortgage payment or do groceries for a month for something that's very unclear and subjective?” She has already decided to file a second complaint about the latest investigation. The city’s communications department says municipal staff can not speak to the Integrity Commissioner’s Report. The initial advert which was launched in early November, featured the No. 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert being stolen by an unidentified culprit. The mystery surrounding the identity of the thief has kept viewers captivated for weeks, making it Waitrose's most successful Christmas campaign to date. According to polls on Waitrose's website, the majority of customers suspected Fig the Cat as the dessert thief, followed by Gamma, then May, with Steve being the least suspicious, reports the Daily Record . Waitrose has now unveiled the second ad, which sees Matthew Macfadyen return as the detective. The latest video follows him as he tries to establish a motive, featuring glimpses from Christmas Day as the movements of the guilty party are reconstructed. The second advert premiered on TV tonight (November 26) during the commercial break for the Great British Bake Off on Channel 4 at 8.15pm, and will be shown again during the I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! break on ITV at 9.15pm. Nathan Ansell, Customer Director at Waitrose, has commented on the impact of their Christmas campaign, noting: "The last few weeks have been filled with suspicion, guessing and alibis. Senior advisers to Vice President Kamala Harris’ failed presidential campaign suggested this week that there just wasn’t much else Harris could have done to beat Donald Trump. Harris couldn’t have distanced herself from President Joe Biden, they said, because she was loyal. She couldn’t have responded more forcefully to attacks over trans rights, because doing so would have been playing Trump’s game. And she might not have had much chance of winning anyway, given the deficit she inherited from Biden when he dropped out of the race in July. “We were hopeful. I don’t know how optimistic we were, but we thought, OK, this is tied, and if a couple things break our way [we could win],” David Plouffe, a senior adviser to the campaign, said Tuesday on the “Pod Save America” podcast in a joint interview with fellow Harris campaign alums Jen O’Malley Dillon, Quentin Fulks and Stephanie Cutter. Plouffe said the campaign’s internal polling never had Harris ahead of Trump. “We didn’t get the breaks we needed on Election Day,” he said. “I think it surprised people, because there was these public polls that came out in late September, early October, showing us with leads that we never saw.” There’s no doubt that voter anger over high prices hurt Harris , just as it has hurt incumbent politicians all over the world. Since Trump’s victory, however, Democrats have debated the relative impacts of other factors, such as the campaign’s muted response to Trump’s anti-trans TV ads and Harris’ decision not to say how she’d be different from Biden. During an early October appearance on “The View,” Sunny Hostin, one of the hosts of the daytime talk show, asked Harris if there was anything she would have done differently than Biden, whose approval rating had been underwater since 2021. “There is not a thing that comes to mind,” Harris said, in an answer ready-made for a Trump TV ad. “And I’ve been part of most of the decisions that have had impact.” Many Democratic pollsters and strategists have questioned why Harris didn’t give some example of how she’d be different, such as by saying she would have acted faster than Biden did to reduce migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border. Cutter said the campaign heard the second-guessing ― but, she said, Harris was merely being true to herself and loyal to Biden, and saying otherwise would have backfired. “We knew we had to show her as her own person and point to the future and not try to rehash the past,” Cutter said. “But she also felt that she was part of the administration, and unless we said something like, ‘Well, I would have handled the border completely differently,’ we were never going to satisfy anybody.” “She had tremendous loyalty to President Biden,” Cutter continued. “Imagine if we said, ‘Well, we would have taken this approach on the border.’ Imagine the round of stories coming out after that, of people saying, ‘Well, she never said that in the meeting.’” Since Election Day, Democrats have also debated the impact of Trump’s anti-trans messaging, with some lawmakers questioning the party’s fealty to trans rights activists with uncompromising positions . The Trump campaign spent significant resources on ads highlighting Harris’ past support for gender-affirming care, including surgery, for people incarcerated in federal prisons. Fulks, Harris’ former deputy campaign manager, called those ads “very effective,” though he and Plouffe said they doubted whether the ads actually moved voters. Log in to hide these messages. “I ultimately don’t believe that it was about the issue of ‘trans.’ I think that it made her seem out of touch, and it was sort of a pseudo-economic ad underneath it, because he was saying you’re going to pay for it with taxpayer money,” Fulks said, adding that the fact the ads used video of Harris stating her position in her own words made them more damaging. “We tested a ton of responses to this, direct responses, and none of them ever tested as well as basically her talking about what she would do... the future, the type of president that she would be,” Fulks said. The campaign’s internal research, Fulks said, indicated they should focus their message on attacking Trump or introducing Harris to voters in a positive way, rather than defending her from Trump’s attacks.
