Beyond Paradise's Humphrey and Martha had a very exciting house guest in this year's Christmas special . Much of the couple's journey up until this point has been consumed by their attempts to becomes parents, which involved trying to conceive naturally, before turning to IVF. But when that option proved to be unsuccessful, they eventually decided to explore fostering . They'd already had some practice with a young boy called Ryan, who was having some problems at home. But he has since returned to his mum, which means Humphrey and Martha were ready to open their home to Jaiden . The teenager, who arrived shortly before Christmas, was greeted by the pair, who were very excited, if nervous, to have him with them. But despite their warm welcome, he only removed his headphones to ask for the WiFi password, before placing them firmly back on his head. "He's a lovely kid," said Hannah the social worker. "He might just take a while to warm up." And she wasn't kidding. "Moving into a new placement is a very stressful time for these kids," said Hannah. "They didn't ask to be put into care, and because of that, they feel like they have no control." Jaiden was parked on a bench down in the town, and as Martha approached, he appeared despondent. "You must think I’m really rude, sitting on my own all the time, always on my phone," he said. Martha assured him that she didn't, before encouraging him to open up to her and Humphrey. "You don't have to keep these things to yourself, you know," she said. "I know it must be difficult. We can talk about it, it might help a bit." And without forcing the issue further, Jaiden then felt able to confide in her about his younger brother Ben, who was living with another foster family due to them having different dads. It was a huge breakthrough considering he had barely spoken a word to her since his arrival. And now that she had that crucial insight, Martha felt able to ease off, leaving him to call his brother, which completely shifted his mood. When Humphrey arrived home that evening, the scene couldn't have been more different. "Both vehicles stopped and a short time later, the Toyota was seen travelling north along Gundaroo Drive with the driver of the Mazda in the tray of the Hilux," the police said. "The driver of the Toyota pulled over and the man in the tray exited the vehicle and began walking back towards the Barton Highway." Police wanted anyone who may be able to help with information to get in touch. April 2023: Grande posts a TikTok addressing people's comments about her body Body-shaming comments seem to have hit a nerve with Grande last year. The star was still filming "Wicked" in the Spring of 2023 when her Instagram was flooded with comments and concerns about her thinness and what people perceived as a visible weight loss. The singer then took to TikTok to address the rampant speculation and "concern" around her weight. On the video was a caption that stated, "You have talked a lot about it over the past decade or longer so I'd like to join in this time. "I think we should gentler and less comfortable commenting on people's bodies — no matter what. If you think good or well-intentioned — whatever it is — healthy, unhealthy, big, small, this or that. We just shouldn't. We should work towards not doing that as much," she emphasized. She suggested that people should aim towards tweaking their compliments or ignoring something that bothers them so they don't comment at all to "keep each other safer." Grande added, "There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful. I know personally for me, the body you've been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body." The singer revealed that in the past, "I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy. A Winnipeg pilot project offers arena ice and rocks in a curling club to top teams in the area. Two sheets at the eight-sheet Heather Curling Club are prepped and clipped by leading ice maker Greg Ewasko, who has repurposed provincial championship rocks for use. A cabinet containing a TV for video analysis, speed trap equipment for weight control and smart brooms to track pressure, speed and power is rinkside. When Dave Murdoch accepted the job of Curling Canada’s high-performance director two years ago, he envisioned regional training hubs across the country to serve the nation’s top curlers and teams, plus the next generation in the sport, in those geographical areas. Winnipeg’s hub that’s been up and running since Oct. 8 is a step toward his vision. The Saville Community Sports Centre on Edmonton’s University of Alberta campus and Calgary’s Glencoe Club had National Training Centre designations predating Murdoch’s arrival. Winnipeg is a test case for what he hopes will be expansion across Canada. “We’ve got a couple of centres in Alberta, but how can we create a network across the country that’s really going to not only help our national team program, but has somewhere for our NextGen to evolve?” Murdoch said. “We have a lot of interest in this model, and I’d like to think that come season 2025-26 we’ll have a few more in place.” Olympic and two-time world champion Jill Officer oversees the Heather operation as Curl Manitoba’s high-performance director. “The biggest thing about it is, while we are using an existing facility, we have two dedicated sheets that are probably 85 per cent of the time for national team and NextGen athletes,” Officer explained. “The difference is the consistency and quality of the ice. Recreational curlers playing on that ice might have a difficult time managing it because it’s so much more similar to arena conditions. It is curling a lot. The speed is really nice. “I’ve had a lot of players say ‘thanks so much for doing this. It feels good to be excited to go to practice again.'” Mike McEwen, Kerri Einarson, Kaitlyn Lawes, Kate Cameron, national under-25 men’s champion Jordan McDonald and the NextGen mixed doubles duo of Mackenzie Arbuckle and Aaron McDonnell are among curlers training with lively ice and rocks that mimic Grand Slams, national and world championships more than regular club ice and stones. “We went to the Heather because I run some youth programs there, but I also knew they had enough hours for us to be able to offer it,” Officer explained. “A lot of clubs in Winnipeg typically are quite full up or they’re booked. It’s maybe a little more challenging to provide us with two sheets that would be for us 85 to 90 per cent of the time. “The big idea came from David and we’ve been talking about his idea of wanting to have these regional hubs across the country because Canada is so large and we have athletes spread out everywhere. It would be great to have these sort of setups and conditions in more places than just Alberta.” Winnipeg’s hub is a joint venture of Curling Canada, Curl Manitoba, the provincial government, Sport Manitoba and the Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba. “The biggest piece we were missing was funding to make it happen,” said Curl Manitoba executive director Craig Baker. “Curl Manitoba couldn’t go at it alone and Curling Canada couldn’t go at it alone, so how do we make it happen? “There was a bunch of different pieces and for us this year the biggest one was the province coming on board. The province of Manitoba came to Curl Manitoba and said it’s something they wanted to support.” Neither Murdoch nor Baker would give the price tag for the project stating it was the sum of funding from multiple partners. Existing rocks and technological equipment were brought to the facility, and a nutritionist and strength and conditioning coach at the Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba were already working with athletes. Athletes pay a fee to use it, either as individuals or as a team. “We’re trying to do it as economically has possible,” Baker said. “If we’re able to provide a venue where athletes can say they love to train, then I think we’re doing something right.”

Wall Street closes higher after business activity dataGRAND FORKS — The latest defense authorization bill expands mental health care access for North Dakota’s military service members and adds new provisions for countering threats posed by unmanned drones. Those are among the provisions touted by North Dakota’s two U.S. senators in the annual National Defense Authorization Act. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law Monday after it passed by divided votes in the House and Senate. ADVERTISEMENT Language in the latest NDAA includes an order to establish a counter-UAS task force combatting drone incursions onto U.S. military bases and several provisions for current service members’ mental health care, including measures singling out pilots of U.S. combat drones. Drone incursions have been reported in recent weeks over U.S. military bases in England and Germany, while residents of several eastern states have reported seeing numerous unidentified lighted drones flying overhead, though U.S. officials say most of the latter incidents have been manned aircraft. Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said the NDAA “helps formalize what (the Defense Department) is already doing” to combat unwanted drone use, citing the counter-UAS goals of Project ULTRA and ongoing efforts to integrate drones into U.S. airspace at the Northern Plains UAS Test Site. Project ULTRA — which stands for UAS logistics, traffic, research and autonomy — seeks to boost national security and operational efficiency of unmanned aerial system operations. “The interesting thing about Grand Forks is we’ve built an ecosystem where, I’ve talked about us being the tip of the spear against China; we’re the tip of the spear in developing drone and counter-drone,” Hoeven said. Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., has championed a provision that expands the number of mental health providers certified under military health insurance provider TRICARE. Cramer said he pushed for the expanded access in response to a pair of suicides among Grand Forks Air Force Base personnel in the past several years. “The standards to join TRICARE are so stringent now, they don’t take into account that some states like North Dakota only have certain accreditations and certifications that are available to them,” Cramer said. “If you don’t get the right credential — it’s not that it’s a better credential, just the right one — your providers don’t meet the standard for TRICARE.” ADVERTISEMENT He’s also pushed for a provision creating a combat status identifier for pilots of remotely piloted aircraft involved in combat operations. Cramer cited as inspiration the 119th Wing of the North Dakota National Guard, which flies MQ-9 Reaper unmanned planes. “Our remote pilots are treated differently when it comes to things like PTSD potential or depression or mental health challenges as the result of, say, a kill shot,” he said. “I wanted to make sure the remote pilots are given the same type of consideration as somebody that’s in the cockpit of an airplane.” This year’s NDAA also authorizes $1.9 million in planning and design funding for maintenance on Grand Forks Air Force Base’s runway — one of Cramer’s pet projects — and reauthorization for the Space Development Agency’s mission, including its recently-established Operations Center North at Grand Forks Air Force Base. Hoeven said his office is working to appropriate another $450 million toward an advanced fire control system built off the SDA’s network of low-Earth orbit satellites. Other North Dakota-specific provisions in this year’s NDAA include authorization for funding to update the UH-72 Lakota helicopters used by the North Dakota National Guard and funding authorization to modernize Minot Air Force Base’s nuclear capabilities. Policy measures, like more provider options for mental health care or the counter-UAS task force, became law with the passage of the NDAA. ADVERTISEMENT However, NDAA provisions that require funding — like nuclear modernization or the runway study — will need to pass in a separate defense appropriations bill. “An authorization just says that it’s approved,” Hoeven explained. “In defense appropriations, we allocate the dollars to do it, and if we don’t provide those dollars for the NDAA, for those authorizations or programs, then obviously they don’t advance.” The federal government is currently operating at last year’s funding levels via a continuing resolution set to expire in March. Congress will have to attempt to pass a defense appropriations bill before then or pass another continuing resolution. The NDAA usually passes with significant bipartisan support. This year, however, the bill passed with significant dissent from both House and Senate Democrats after a last-minute amendment by House Speaker Mike Johnson added language barring TRICARE from covering some gender-affirming care for transgender children of service members. Both Hoeven and Cramer expressed support for Johnson’s amendment, which blocks gender-affirming care “that could result in sterilization” — though medical professionals say hormone therapy (like puberty blockers) generally does not cause infertility. Cramer said providing gender-affirming care did not support military readiness and dismissed concerns about the mental health impact of denying that care to minors. “(The amendment) has a much lower priority than caring for people who are stressed out by the fact that they’re a warfighter,” he said. “We need them to be healthy, we need them to be ready for war, and puberty blockers, gender-affirming care, just simply don’t do either of those things.” ADVERTISEMENT Hoeven said gender-affirming care was hurting military readiness and recruiting and decried providing gender-affirming care as a “social experiment,” a phrase also used by Cramer. President-elect Donald Trump is widely expected to reinstate a ban on transgender service members in the U.S. Armed Forces, as he did in his first administration. North Dakota’s U.S. senators also dismissed concerns that the Johnson provision could affect bipartisanship or productivity in the next Congress. The Senate ultimately passed the NDAA 85-15, while less than half of the House’s Democrats supported the act. More Democrats attacked Johnson’s last-minute addition while saying they felt compelled to vote for the broader bill. “I’m hopeful Democrats will come around and join us with what we’ve always done with our military, which is support our professional, great men and women in uniform who do such an outstanding job, not a bunch of social policies that shouldn’t be in there,” Hoeven said. ORONO, Maine (AP) — Christopher Mantis helped lead Maine past Holy Cross on Sunday with 17 points off of the bench in an 80-55 win. Mantis had five rebounds for the Black Bears (3-3). Quion Burns scored 16 points and added eight rebounds. AJ Lopez went 6 of 13 from the field (2 for 6 from 3-point range) to finish with 14 points. The Crusaders (4-3) were led in scoring by DeAndre Williams, who finished with 12 points. Joe Nugent added 11 points for Holy Cross. Caleb Kenney had 10 points. The man, who is in his 30s, was brought before a special sitting of Ballyshannon District Court earlier today. The accused cannot be named for legal reasons in order to protect the identity of the alleged victim. Inspector Anthony Coyle gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. The court heard that a protection order was served on the man in early November. He is charged that, at a named address in Donegal, he contravened a protection order in that he entered the home of the applicant without invitation and assaulted her by stabbing her. The charge is contrary to section 33(1) of the Domestic Violence Act, 2018. There was no objection to bail, which was granted by Judge Brendan O’Reilly on the accused’s own bond. Bail conditions include that he be of good behaviour and commit no further offence and reside at a name address and inform Gardai of any change. He must also comply with the terms of the protection order; have no contact, either directly or indirectly, to include social media, with the alleged injured party and any witnesses and stay away from a named address. Legal aid was granted to the man’s solicitor Mr Donough Cleary. The matter was adjourned to January 20, 2025.
