Thursday, December 26, 2024 As 2024 comes to a close, private weather service AccuWeather meteorologists have released their New Year’s Eve forecast, offering key insights for travelers and revelers across the United States. With multiple storms predicted to impact various regions, Mother Nature may play a pivotal role in shaping how millions ring in 2025. From potential rain in New York City to sunny skies in Los Angeles, the forecast provides a detailed guide for holiday planners. AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok predicts that the Northeast could face stormy weather as the year comes to an end. New York City, the epicenter of New Year’s Eve festivities, may experience rain or a mix of rain and snow depending on the storm’s exact timing. “There can be a storm that arrives New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day that has the potential to produce a mix of rain and snow for the Northeast, with all rain farther south,” Pastelok explained. The timing of the storm remains uncertain, but rain could begin before the iconic Times Square ball drop. Revelers in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., might also face raindrops during outdoor celebrations, with wet weather potentially disrupting firework displays. Chicago and Detroit are similarly advised to keep an eye on the forecast. A slower-moving storm system could result in lingering precipitation well past midnight, potentially affecting the NHL Winter Classic at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, scheduled for 5 p.m. ET on New Year’s Eve. The Great Lakes region, including cities like Chicago and Detroit, is forecasted to experience mild temperatures for late December, ranging from the 30s to lower 40s. However, any acceleration of the storm system could bring colder air sooner, potentially lowering temperatures below current projections. Despite the possibility of rain or snow showers, temperatures in the Great Lakes and Northeast are expected to remain above historical averages, providing some relief from the bone-chilling cold typical of the season. Meanwhile, Seattle and Portland are unlikely to escape the wet weather that has persisted throughout December. Rain is expected to either continue or move in just as 2025 begins, potentially dampening outdoor celebrations in the Pacific Northwest. Despite the gloomy forecast, temperatures in both cities are expected to remain relatively mild, making conditions manageable for those braving the rain for festivities. Cities like Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Diego are expected to enjoy some of the best weather for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Dry and mild conditions are forecasted, providing ideal settings for fireworks displays and outdoor gatherings. With temperatures expected to remain comfortable, residents and visitors in these Southwest cities can look forward to welcoming the new year without worrying about weather-related disruptions. For those planning to travel or attend outdoor events, staying informed about local weather updates is crucial. Here are a few tips to help navigate the potential weather challenges: As the clock ticks closer to midnight on December 31, weather conditions across the U.S. promise to be as diverse as the country itself. From potential storms in the Northeast to rain in the Pacific Northwest and sunny skies in the Southwest, New Year’s Eve revelers will need to adapt their plans accordingly. While some may face wet weather in cities like New York and Seattle, others in Phoenix or Los Angeles will enjoy a mild and pleasant start to 2025. With proper planning and a close watch on weather updates, Americans can ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration, no matter where they are. As always, AccuWeather remains committed to providing accurate and timely forecasts, helping everyone prepare for the year-end festivities with confidence. It comes almost exactly one year after the Los Angeles Dodgers forked out a princely sum of $700 million on a 10-year, heavily deferred deal for two-way Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. They are believed to be the two richest contracts in pro sports history. The way it's going, a contract approaching $1 billion doesn't seem out of the question. But several factors are working against it — at least in the near future. There's reason to believe the megadeals for Ohtani and Soto are unicorns in the baseball world. Both players are uniquely talented, surely, but both also had unusual circumstances propelling their value into the stratosphere. Ohtani is the greatest two-way player in baseball history, capable of improving any team on both sides of the ball. He's also the rare baseball player who has true international appeal . His every move ( like his unexpected marriage announcement ) is followed closely in his native Japan, adding another 125 million potential fans who buy merchandise, watch him play and help fill the Dodgers' coffers. Then there's Soto — a four-time All-Star and on-base machine who won a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019. The X-factor for him is he became a free agent at the prime age of 26, which is extremely hard to do under current MLB rules. Players have to be in the big leagues for six years before testing free agency. The precocious Soto debuted at 19 with the Nats, making him part of a rare group of players who reached the highest level of professional baseball as a teenager. That accelerated his free agency timeline. It's rare for players to debut that young, and rarer still for them to develop into stars and test the open market the first chance they get. Two recent examples are Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, who both reached free agency in 2019. Machado signed a free-agent record $300 million contract with San Diego, and Harper overtook him days later with a $330 million contract to join the Phillies. Most players debut in the big leagues from ages 22 to 26, which means free agency comes in their late 20s or early 30s. A typical example is Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who is one of this generation's great players but didn't hit the market until he was 30. Judge played three seasons of college baseball for Fresno State before getting drafted by the Yankees in 2013 at age 21 — already two years older than Soto was when he made his MLB debut. It took a few years for the budding superstar to reach the majors, and he was 25 when he had his breakout season in 2018, smashing 52 homers to earn AL Rookie of the Year honors. By the time he reached free agency after the 2022 season, he had already passed age 30. It's a major factor that led to him signing a $360 million, nine-year deal with the Yankees, which seems downright reasonable these days after the Ohtani and Soto deals. Two major trends are colliding that will make it harder for guys like Soto to hit free agency in their mid 20s. First, MLB teams have been more likely in recent years to take college players early in the draft, betting on more experienced talents. Just 10 high school players were drafted among the top 30 picks in the 2024 draft . Second, teams are more eager to lock up young, premium talent on long-term deals very early in their careers, well before they hit free agency. Sometimes before they even reach the majors. Since Soto, just two players have debuted in MLB before their 20th birthday — Elvis Luciano and Junior Caminero. Luciano hasn't been back to the majors since his 2019 cup of coffee. Caminero is now 21 and has only played in 50 big league games. Among those that debuted at 20: Fernando Tatis Jr. signed a $340 million, 14-year deal with San Diego in 2021, years before reaching the open market. Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio got an $82 million, eight-year deal before even reaching the big leagues. Young stars Corbin Carroll ($111 million, eight years with Arizona), Bobby Witt Jr. ($288 million, 11 years with Kansas City) and Julio Rodriguez ($209.3 million, 12 years with Seattle) also got massive guarantees early in their 20s to forgo an early free agency. The exception and wild card: Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be a 26-year-old free agent next offseason. Guerrero hasn't been as consistent in his young career as Soto, but a standout 2025 season could position him to threaten Soto's deal. More likely is that the player to pass Soto isn't in the majors yet — and might not even be in pro baseball. When 25-year-old Alex Rodriguez signed his record $252 million, 10-year deal with Texas in 2001, it took over a decade for another player to match that total, when Albert Pujols got $240 million over 10 years from the Angels in 2012. For many players, passing up life-changing money in their early or mid 20s is too enticing, even if it means that they might not maximize their value on the free agent market later in their careers. Soto was determined to test the market. He famously turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer to stay with the Washington Nationals in 2022, betting that he could make even more as a free agent. Not many players would turn down that kind of cash. Then again, that's what makes Soto so unique. And it's also why his $765 million deal could be the industry standard for some time. The only certainty is that the stakes are high, and the consequences of missteps could have far-reaching and long-lasting implications for the entire region. As the conversation around fairness and integrity in table tennis continues to evolve, it is clear that players like Wang Chuqin play a crucial role in shaping the future of the sport. Corporate regulator suing Rex, directors over breachesCellectis announces the drawdown of the third tranche of €5 million under the credit facility agreement entered with the European Investment Bank (EIB)Manhattan police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione , suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while carrying a gun, mask and writings linking him to the ambush. Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Late Monday, Manhattan prosecutors charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Here's the latest: White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says “violence to combat any sort of corporate greed is unacceptable” and the White House will “continue to condemn any form of violence.” She declined to comment on the investigation into the Dec. 4 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson or reports that writings belonging to the suspect, Luigi Mangione, said insurance companies care more about profits than their customers. “This is horrific,” Jean-Pierre said of the fatal shooting of Thompson as he walked in Manhattan. He didn’t appear to say anything as deputies led him to a waiting car outside. “I’m deeply grateful to the men and women of law enforcement whose efforts to solve the horrific murder of Brian Thompson led to the arrest of a suspect in Pennsylvania,” Gov. Hochul said in the statement. “I am coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office and will sign a request for a governor’s warrant to ensure this individual is tried and held accountable. Public safety is my top priority and I’ll do everything in my power to keep the streets of New York safe.” That’s according to a spokesperson for the governor who said Gov. Hochul will do it as soon as possible. Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a healthcare executive in New York City, apparently was living a charmed life: the grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, valedictorian of his elite Baltimore prep school and with degrees from one of the nation’s top private universities. Friends at an exclusive co-living space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Hawaii where the 26-year-old Mangione once lived widely considered him a “great guy,” and pictures on his social media accounts show a fit, smiling, handsome young man on beaches and at parties. Now, investigators in New York and Pennsylvania are working to piece together why Mangione may have diverged from this path to make the violent and radical decision to gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen attack on a Manhattan street. The killing sparked widespread discussions about corporate greed, unfairness in the medical insurance industry and even inspired folk-hero sentiment toward his killer. ▶ Read more about Luigi Mangione Peter Weeks, the Blair County district attorney, says he’ll work with New York officials to try to return suspect Luigi Mangione there to face charges. Weeks said the New York charges are “more serious” than in Blair County. “We believe their charges take precedent,” Weeks said, promising to do what’s needed to accommodate New York’s prosecution first. Weeks spoke to reporters after a brief hearing at which a defense lawyer said Mangione will fight extradition. The defense asked for a hearing on the issue. In the meantime, Mangione will be detained at a state prison in western Pennsylvania. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said Tuesday it will seek a Governor’s warrant to secure Mangione’s extradition to Manhattan. Under state law, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul can issue a warrant of arrest demanding Mangione’s return to the state. Such a warrant must recite the facts necessary to the validity of its issuance and be sealed with the state seal. It would then be presented to law enforcement in Pennsylvania to expedite Mangione’s return to New York. But Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks says it won’t be a substantial barrier to returning Mangione to New York. He noted that defendants contest extradition “all the time,” including in simple retail theft cases. Dickey, his defense lawyer, questioned whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law, but prosecutors raised concerns about both public safety and Mangione being a potential flight risk, and the judge denied it. Mangione will continue to be housed at a state prison in Huntingdon. He has 14 days to challenge the detention. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have a month to seek a governor’s warrant out of New York. Mangione, wearing an orange jumpsuit, mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair, or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion, but was quieted by his lawyer. Luigi Mangione, 26, has also been denied bail at a brief court hearing in western Pennsylvania. He has 14 days to challenge the bail decision. That’s with some intervention from owner Elon Musk. The account, which hasn’t posted since June, was briefly suspended by X. But after a user inquired about it in a post Monday, Musk responded “This happened without my knowledge. Looking into it.” The account was later reinstated. Other social media companies such as Meta have removed his accounts. According to X rules, the platform removes “any accounts maintained by individual perpetrators of terrorist, violent extremist, or mass violent attacks, as well as any accounts glorifying the perpetrator(s), or dedicated to sharing manifestos and/or third party links where related content is hosted.” Mangione is not accused of perpetrating a terrorist or mass attack — he has been charged with murder — and his account doesn’t appear to share any writings about the case. He shouted something that was partly unintelligible, but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” He’s there for an arraignment on local charges stemming from his arrest Monday. He was dressed in an orange jumpsuit as officers led him from a vehicle into the courthouse. Local defense lawyer Thomas Dickey is expected to represent the 26-year-old at a Tuesday afternoon hearing at the Blair County Courthouse. Dickey declined comment before the hearing. Mangione could have the Pennsylvania charges read aloud to him and may be asked to enter a plea. They include possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. In New York, he was charged late Monday with murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain with corporate greed, said a a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of the suspect’s hand-written notes and social media postings. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. The filing echoes earlier statements from NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny who said Mangione had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America.” Mangione is now charged in Pennsylvania with being a fugitive of justice. A customer at the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested said one of his friends had commented beforehand that the man looked like the suspect wanted for the shooting in New York City. “It started out almost a little bit like a joke, my one friend thought he looked like the shooter,” said the customer, who declined to give his full name, on Tuesday. “It wasn’t really a joke, but we laughed about it,” he added. The warrant on murder and other charges is a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania. In court papers made public Tuesday, a New York City police detective reiterated key findings in the investigation he said tied Mangione to the killing, including surveillance footage and a fake ID he used to check into a Manhattan hostel on Nov. 24. Police officers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, found that ID when they arrested Mangione on Monday. Mangione doesn’t yet have a lawyer who can speak on his behalf, court officials said. Images of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and ski cap. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. Mangione’s cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione, announced Tuesday morning that he’s postponing a fundraiser planned later this week at the Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore, which was purchased by the Mangione family in 1986. “Because of the nature of this terrible situation involving my Cousin I do not believe it is appropriate to hold my fundraising event scheduled for this Thursday at Hayfields,” Nino Mangione said in a social media post. “I want to thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support. My family and I are heartbroken and ask that you remember the family of Mr. Thompson in your prayers. Thank you.” Officers used New York City’s muscular surveillance system . Investigators analyzed DNA samples, fingerprints and internet addresses. Police went door to door looking for witnesses. When an arrest came five days later , those sprawling investigative efforts shared credit with an alert civilian’s instincts. A customer at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania noticed another patron who resembled the man in the oblique security-camera photos New York police had publicized. He remains jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. By late Monday evening, prosecutors in Manhattan had added a charge of murder, according to an online court docket. It’s unclear whether Luigi Nicholas Mangione has an attorney who can comment on the allegations. Asked at Monday’s arraignment whether he needed a public defender, Mangione asked whether he could “answer that at a future date.”New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin agreed to a record-setting eight-year, $92 million contract on Friday, according to multiple reports. Shesterkin's deal, which averages $11.5 million annually and runs through the 2032-33 season, is the largest ever for a goaltender. The previous high was an eight-year, $84 million deal ($10.5 million average) that Carey Price signed with the Montreal Canadiens in 2017. Shesterkin, who won the Vezina Trophy as the top netminder for the 2021-22 season, turned down an eight-year, $88 million offer just prior to the start of this season. He is making $5.66 million in 2023-24 in the final season of a four-year, $22.67 million contract. The Moscow native finished third in Hart Trophy (MVP) balloting during his stellar 2021-22 season in when he went 36-13-4 and led the NHL with both a 2.07 goals-against average and .935 save percentage. Shesterkin, who turns 29 on Dec. 30, has won 36 or more games in each of the past three regular seasons. But this season, he is just 8-9-1 with a personal-worst 3.05 GAA in 18 games this season. His .908 save percentage is also his worst. Overall, Shesterkin is 143-68-18 with a 2.48 GAA and .920 save percentage in 231 appearances (226 starts) over six seasons. In the postseason, he is 23-20-0 with a 2.41 GAA and .928 save percentage. Reports of the deal began circulating shortly after the Rangers traded captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks. That freed up money for next season as Trouba was in the sixth season of a seven-year, $56 million deal. --Field Level Media
As the story of the man's failed attempts continues to circulate online, it serves as a cautionary tale for others who may be tempted by the promise of easy money. While the allure of a large cash prize may be enticing, it is important to consider the true value of such challenges and whether they align with one's personal goals and values. In the case of this unfortunate individual, his single-minded pursuit of the prize money led to repeated disappointment and financial loss, highlighting the pitfalls of prioritizing material rewards over personal growth and self-improvement.Unity Shares: The Future of Gaming Finance Awaits! JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Josh Reynolds was ready for another change of scenery after getting shot in Denver in mid-October. The Jaguars (2-10) claimed Reynolds off waivers from the Broncos on Wednesday, adding the journeyman to help offset season-ending injuries to Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis. The 29-year-old Reynolds missed the last eight games, with the bulk of those coming after the shooting. “Yeah, man, one of them things I had rather put behind me,” Reynolds said following practice Friday, his first public comments since the incident. “But I mean anybody going through that, man, it is a crazy ordeal. But, hey, I’m here now. I’m in sunny Florida. I’m just blessed to be here.” Reynolds and another man were shot as they drove from a strip club in the early morning hours of Oct. 18, about the time the Broncos were returning from a 33-10 win at New Orleans. Denver police arrested two men in connection with the shooting, which involved at least 30 rounds getting fired into the vehicle carrying Reynolds and his companions. The men have been charged with six counts of attempted murder, assault and other felonies. Reynolds was shot once in his left arm and once in the back of his head. “Was tough for a few weeks, but I had a good support system behind me,” Reynolds said. “A lot of the organization over there was helping me out a lot, so they made it easier for me to kind of transition through that whole process.” His mom was there, too, taking off work to be with him on weekends. “She’s always been a big part of my life,” Reynolds said. “Always been in my corner whenever she can. It’s been awesome to have her traveling and just seeing her at my games, man. It’s awesome.” Reynolds has 12 receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown this season. He has 232 catches for 3,116 yards and 20 scores in eight NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Detroit, Tennessee and Denver. He signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Broncos in 2024. “You put on the tape, he’s obviously been in a couple of spots, and he’s been a guy that’s a bigger, taller, athletic receiver,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “Again, gives us depth where we’re obviously missing Christian and Gabe. Definitely gives us something that we can continue to develop that room, I think. “It helps us in the way that we’re trying to win these games. We’re trying to go out and play well, and he gives us an opportunity to do that. So, we’re excited to get him going a little bit and see how he can help.” The Jaguars play Sunday at Tennessee (3-9).Dr. Kelvin Wymbs Season’s greetings to all Williamsburg County School District scholars and stakeholders. I cannot begin to tell you how impressed I have been with our academic preparation and increases during the last three years. Despite the fact that both of our high schools have two of the highest poverty indexes in the state, Williamsburg County School District continues to soar beyond predictions and focuses the scholars on “Imagining Greatness” in academics. I sincerely ask that you take time to nurture and love your family and friends during this holiday season. When we return in the New Year, I ask that we continue our amazing trajectory by encouraging our scholars to continue to be models of success. The scholars’ success is Williamsburg County’s success. Our unprecedented state assessment growth in Algebra 1 and Biology speak greatly of our success in preparing our scholars for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) higher level courses. Our 92.24% overall passage rate on the English 2 End-of-Course exam shows that our scholars have the skills and knowledge to enter college, the workforce, or the military. They are being prepared for jobs that have not yet been created as we ensure that they are immersed in cutting edge coursework. Our delegation has developed a perfect slogan that epitomizes the spirit of a county on the move. “Team Williamsburg” is a movement that all members of Williamsburg County Schools will become attuned to saying and believing. Today, I ask you to join forces with the delegation, the WCSD Board of Trustees, and Williamsburg County School District’s leadership team to continue to take giant steps forward. We sit on the cusp of being a multi-faceted school district that shows exceptional promise for academics, arts, and athletics. As we enter the New Year, let’s once again prove that actions and unity speak volumes. In closing, to paraphrase the great singer/poet J. Cole, “There is beauty in the struggle, sometimes sadness in success, but always love Yours (your people).” God Bless You, Dr. Kelvin Wymbs
Starmer’s lead EU negotiator opens door to a major concession in Brexit reset talksJEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Mike Parson cut the ribbon Friday on a new historical exhibit in the state Capitol featuring portraits of most of the state’s 57 governors. Included in the revamped display of previous chief executives is Parson’s portrait, which also was unveiled Friday with little more than a month to go before he leaves office after six years at the helm. “Serving as Missourians’ Governor and First Lady has truly been the honor of our lives, and we are excited to share this official portrait with the thousands of visitors to our magnificent State Capitol,” Parson and first lady Teresa Parson said in a joint statement. The governor’s comments came as he has spent the past year traveling the state, signing his biography and talking about his tenure as governor. He said the unveiling would be his last official function before he leaves Jan. 13. Parson’s portrait was painted by Lisa Ober of St. Louis, who consulted with the governor and first lady about the composition of the painting and its elements. The portrait depicts Parson standing in front of a window inside his office at the Capitol. Ober replaced the background, which normally overlooks the Missouri River, with a rendering of the rolling timber and hay fields of Polk County, where the Parsons have a family cattle operation. Also included in the backdrop of the painting are a John Deere tractor and hay baler, Missouri and U.S. flags and the number “57” hidden in the foliage of a tree. “This portrait may serve as the bookend to our public service careers, but we will forever be humbled and count ourselves truly blessed to have been entrusted by the people of Missouri to lead our great state, where the promise of faith, family, and freedom lives on for generations to come,” Parson and his wife said. The oil painting, as was a painting of the first lady that hangs in the Governor’s Mansion, was funded by Sedalia philanthropist Sue Heckart. The gubernatorial display has been under wraps for several weeks as workers installed new signs directing visitors to the “Hall of Governors” on the Capitol’s first floor. The corridors, which lead to the state history museum, had been devoid of artwork before the changes. Most of the pictures had already been displayed in the first-floor museum, but they were located in largely nondescript corners with little fanfare. Some of the portraits had been stored in state archives due to a lack of space in the museum. “You could never have found them all at one time,” said Gov.-elect Mike Kehoe, who was on hand for the dedication. Among the portraits are governors who sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War and those who died in office. Not included in the mix is a portrait of former Gov. Eric Greitens , who resigned amid scandal in 2018, paving the way for Parson to be elevated from his position as lieutenant governor. “The Hall of Governors is a testament to the importance of governance and the impact of leadership. It is a reminder of the challenges our leaders have faced, the milestones they’ve achieved, and the collective strength that unites us as one in pursuit of a brighter future,” said Office of Administration Commission Ken Zellers.
