Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine took part in his first regular season game in nearly a year, and while it wasn’t perfect, we saw a lot of the qualities that makes him a special player. It was an encouraging start, bolstered by the fact that Laine followed up his Habs debut by scoring a powerplay goal in the very next game. If the 6’4′′ winger can add explosiveness and speed to the mix, and recover some stamina sooner than later, his addition to the Habs could prove a deal that moves the needle for a franchise in desperate need of offensive reinforcements. Regardless of how fast he manages to find his former game shape, there still are five aspects of his game that shone through in Laine’s first two matches with the Canadiens. PATRIK LAINE AGAIN Two goals in two games in a @CanadiensMTL uniform! pic.twitter.com/nCnMb0i1Ur — NHL (@NHL) December 6, 2024 Lethal Weapon It’s no secret, Laine has a fantastic shot. Much like the league’s top powerplay goalscorers, such as Alex Ovechkin, he can find twine even when the opposing team pays close attention to him in the offensive zone. We saw a perfect example of that against the Islanders, as goaltender Ilya Sorokin squared up to the shot, only to see the puck fly by him before he could get a good read on the shot’s destination. Laine exploited a miniscule area of opportunity — a sharpshooter’s goal. His accuracy and the velocity powering his shots makes it rather difficult to defend against, even more so when you’re trying to figure out where he’ll shoot. WELCOME BACK, PATRIK LAINE!! pic.twitter.com/eB119eOQBD — NHL (@NHL) December 4, 2024 Furthermore, by moving Laine to Caufield’s former spot on the powerplay, it allows head coach Martin St-Louis to have all his players sitting in the right chair. So far in his young career, Caufield hasn’t seen extended success as the left dot trigger man. Prior to joining the Canadiens, Caufield was often seen at the bumper position, notably with Team USA, and looked dangerous there. On top of moving Lane Hutson to the first powerplay unit, adding Laine on the dot and moving Caufield to the bumper cold mean improved conversion rates with the special units. Controlled Entries One thing Laine likes to do above all, is hold on to the puck. When his confidence is high, he uses his soft hands to deke defenders, and gain the offensive zone. Remember, a controlled entry leads to a much more high-danger chances than a dump-in. We saw a few examples of this against the Islanders, whereas lesser talented players might have simply lobbed the puck in the zone. Improving controlled zone entries should yield more possession time when it matters, yet another area of weakness for the Montreal Canadiens that should improve with Laine’s addition to the lineup. It’s no secret that you win more games when the puck is on your stick, in the offensive zone. MONTREAL LOVES LAINE The @CanadiensMTL crowd really gave Patrik Laine a warm welcome. pic.twitter.com/3ViIj62dT4 — NHL (@NHL) September 24, 2024 Patty’s Puck Protection Generating controlled entries is just the beginning for Laine, as he also has a tendency to drive the offence with the puck on his stick in high-danger scoring areas, drawing defenders toward him, which, in turn, makes life a little easier on his linemates. With his big frame and long reach, it becomes very difficult for defenders to force turnovers. on a bien senti ce « wooo » we felt that “wooo” #GoHabsGo pic.twitter.com/ZaFMHBI3SQ — Canadiens Montréal (@CanadiensMTL) December 4, 2024 There was one particular shift against the Islanders where Laine spent two whole minutes (!) in the offensive zone, as he and linemates Kirby Dach and Juraj Slafkovsky played keep away, seemingly toying with their opponents. This style of play is also a strong suit for these two young players, showing that Laine can adapt to the pieces already in place, rather than forcing a re-tool of the team’s offensive strategies. Before long, this line could very well be too good to dismantle, and having a legitimate second line would be a welcome sight for all involved, including St-Louis, who is enjoying a healthy lineup for the first time since his taking over. It’s a rare opportunity to share the wealth throughout the lineup. Consequently, coaches formulating a game plan to shut down the Canadiens would no longer have to simply focus on a few players, or one line. Montreal Canadiens Aura The Bell Centre was electric both times they got a chance to watch Laine in action. Unsurprisingly, the crowd went berserk when two goals in two games. The re-invigoration goes beyond the fans, who definitely deserve a little more excitement in the mix considering the high prices of NHL tickets. Laine’s stoic, yet positive personality has started to spread among Montreal Canadiens players, energizing them at a time when the team risks of falling by the wayside due to the struggles involved in playing for a rebuilding organization. It’s almost like his presence inspired the rest of the team to step up, work harder, and focus on not only individual growth, but team-wide improvements as well. #Habs Patrik Laine on the ovation he received from the fans at the Bell Centre tonight: “that was the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard in my life” – says he felt he didn’t deserve it but will remember it for the rest of his life. — Priyanta Emrith (@HabsInHighHeels) December 4, 2024 Hockey Humans, Not Hockey Robots Laine’s recent health issues are well documented, and while mental health remains stigmatized in the professional sports setting, having a player openly discussing his use of a therapist is an important reminder that once the uniforms come off, hockey players also deal with difficult situations that can cast a dark cloud on their day-to-day lives. Everyone stumbles once in a while, that’s to be expected. It’s the manner in which you get back up that really counts, and you’d be hard-pressed to argue Laine did not take all the right steps to get back to doing what he loves most, playing hockey. It makes rooting for the 26-year-old Finn a rather easy proposal. #Habs Patrik Laine: “I talked with my therapist about this when I was a little nervous yesterday and decided putting this jersey on today is an achievement after everything and everything that comes after that is a plus.” — Priyanta Emrith (@HabsInHighHeels) December 4, 2024 What are your impressions of the newest member of the Montreal Canadiens, Patrik Laine ? The San Francisco 49ers haven't been ruled out for the postseason yet but things really aren't going their way right now. San Francisco can't seem to catch a break and has been dealing with high-impact injuries all season to this point. The 49ers haven't been at full strength for seemingly a single game this season and won't be on Sunday when they take on the Chicago Bears. The 49ers ruled out star offensive tackle on Friday and also listed superstar defensive end Nick Bosa as doubtful for the team's showdown against the Bears, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "49ers ruled out (left tackle) Trent Williams for Sunday’s game vs. the Bears and listed (defensive end) Nick Bosa as doubtful," Schefter said. Bosa is having another solid season for the 49ers despite all of the negative chatter about the team this year. He has seven sacks in 10 games to go along with 17 quarterback hits and one interception. The $170 million 49ers star hasn't been fully ruled out for the contest against the Bears yet, but things aren't looking good. Bosa is dealing with an oblique injury and this will be something to watch over the final five weeks of the National Football League regular season. BJP's Ramveer Singh, meanwhile, thanked the Muslim voters in the Kundarki assembly constituency for the "bumper" vote margin he won with. Naseem was fielded from Sishamau in Kanpur after her jailed husband Irfan Solanki was disqualified as MLA from the family bastion seat. Irfan was jailed for arson in a woman's house. "The way people were harassed and beaten during bypolls yet they cast their votes, I salute them. I thank the party workers and most of all the party president (Akhilesh Yadav) for giving me this opportunity. This seat belongs to my husband Irfan Solanki," Naseem told reporters after the results. Asked about visiting a temple in the run-up to the bypolls, she said, "I have no problem going to mandir, church or gurdwara for my supporters. If it keeps my supporters happy, then why not. I will also get works done there (places of worship)." Meanwhile, BJP's Suresh Awasthi who lost to Naseem by 8,654 votes, blamed the division in votes for his defeat. "Somewhere we had thought the Hindu votes won't get divided. But the Hindu votes got divided and that has resulted in my (defeat). The result is yet to be out (officially)," he told reporters. Awasthi said he won't comment on the impact of the 'katoge to batoge' slogan. He said caste equations and how other parties contested the bypolls in the seat was a matter of detailed analysis. In Kundarki, BJP's Ramveer Singh said he expected a win by a 50,000-vote margin but ended up with a whopping 1.45 lakh vote gap. He added that among those who encouraged him to contest the polls were Muslim community members of his constituency. "Muslim voters from three generations are my supporters and they have full faith in me. I will serve them with honesty and dedication. Had they not had faith in me, I would not have got such bumper votes," Singh said, after securing victory of the BJP on the seat after several years. "People love me and they were unhappy with the Samajwadi Party. They have voted for honesty, development and the 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas' policy of PM Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath," Singh told reporters. In Karhal, SP's Tej Pratap Yadav secured a victory against his fufa BJP's Anujesh Pratap Singh. He also alleged that voters were harassed during the voting process and claimed SP supporters were prevented from voting. "We will increase the vote margin in future, whatever shortcomings are there we will fix them," Yadav told reporters. In Meerapur, Mithilesh Pal of the RLD, an ally of the BJP, secured victory and said CM Adityanath's magic worked for the alliance candidates. "No doubt there is power in unity," she said when asked about the CM's 'batoge to katoge' slogan. She also thanked RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary for giving an "ordinary worker of the backward community" to fight the election. BJP's Surender Diler, who won from the Khair (SC) seat in Aligarh district, rubbished SP's allegations of irregularities during the bypolls. In Ghaziabad, BJP's winning candidate Sanjeev Sharma told reporters that his tenure as MLA would be two years approximately during which he will get the development work done as much as he would have done in five years. "Along with getting the Dudheshwarath temple corridor built, I will especially work in the field of medicine and education," Sharma said. He credited the party organisation and workers for his victory and "direct connection" with the public. In Katehari, BJP's Dharmraj Nishad secured victory for the party after three decades. "It was the people of the constituency and the party workers who fought the election for me. I am thankful that a poor man like me was given a chance by the BJP and the result is that lotus has bloomed here after so many years," Nishad told reporters. In Phulpur, BJP's winning candidate Deepak Patel said the party cadre ensured his victory and he went to the electorate with the main issue of development. "People were convinced that only the BJP can do good for them," he said. In Majhawan, BJP's Suchismita Maurya credited her victory to the party. "BJP works for everyone, it does not engage in politics of appeasement. This worked for me," she said. (This story has not been edited by THE WEEK and is auto-generated from PTI)

ONCO Stock Hits 52-Week Low at $0.6 Amid Market ChallengesExperts discuss why and how to navigate information overload and counter misinformation so that people with cancer can make well-informed decisions about their care. WASHINGTON , Dec. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Comprehensive Cancer Network ® (NCCN ® )—a non-profit alliance of leading cancer centers—hosted a Patient Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. , today. The annual event brings together leading experts to promote strategies and best practices for improving cancer care. This year's summit focused on practice and policy solutions for sharing accurate, evidence-based health information with patients and caregivers. It featured a keynote address from W. Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, MMHC, Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) , along with panel discussions that included Robin Vanderpool , DrPH, Chief of the NCI's Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch . "When people with cancer are empowered to make informed choices about their care, they tend to have better outcomes," said Crystal S. Denlinger , MD, Chief Executive Officer, NCCN , who welcomed attendees at the start of the program. "That means we must provide patients with clear, trustworthy information that meets them where they are. For example, the NCCN Guidelines for Patients offer plain-language explanations of the latest evidence-based recommendations. They feature expert guidance on most cancer types, along with prevention, screening, and supportive care. We share them in multiple languages and formats, including books and webinars." "Every person facing cancer needs and deserves high-quality information to understand their options and guide their decisions. The National Cancer Institute, NCCN, and other organizations represented at the summit contribute to a complex information landscape to meet the needs of people with cancer," said Dr. Rathmell. "Trust in the cancer research enterprise is essential to ensuring that scientific progress includes and reflects the diversity of patient experiences and providing reliable health information is a key aspect of earning and honoring that trust." During a series of Best Practices Presentations for sharing patient-centered health information, NCCN's Senior Director of Patient Information Operations, Dorothy Shead , explained that the NCCN Guidelines for Patients ® are available for free at NCCN.org/patientguidelines or via the NCCN Patient Guides for Cancer App —thanks to funding via the NCCN Foundation ® . Additional presentations came from spokespeople for We Engage 4 Health, HPV Cancers Alliance, Cancer Support Community, and the Frontier & Rural Patient Navigators at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute. More information can be found in a new resource toolkit at NCCN.org/patient-advocacy-resources . Preventing the spread of misinformation Speakers underscored the need to identify and debunk any myths that can create misunderstanding and a false sense of security. They discussed the importance of working with trusted messengers to counter misinformation. "A key lesson learned from COVID-19 was the importance of having trusted professional and community advocates address misinformation and disinformation," noted Martha Dawson , DNP, RN, FAAN, FACHE , Immediate Past President, National Black Nurses Association . "Diverse researchers, scientists, policymakers, faith-based leaders, and community advocates with similar lived experiences can serve as sources of trusted information. It is important to support and expand cancer education at the community level and engage with people where they are born, live, work, play, worship and transition life." "Misinformation in cancer care can create confusion, delay treatment, and undermine trust between patients and providers. By addressing these challenges head-on, we can empower patients with accurate, accessible information to make informed decisions about their health," agreed Skyler Johnson , MD, Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah . "Effective communication is at the heart of quality cancer care. We need to equip clinicians and patients with the tools and strategies to counter misinformation, foster trust, and work together through an increasingly complex healthcare landscape." Clear and consistent messaging to build trust A recurring theme throughout the discussions was the importance of clear and consistent health messaging that is delivered in a way everyone can understand. That means keeping in mind inclusive technology and supportive health literacy levels. Speakers cautioned against using too much medical jargon, instead focusing on language that can resonate. They also noted that it can be hard to retain information right after learning you or a loved one has cancer, so careful repetition can be key. Speakers also reiterated how crucial it is to build trust with each patient through open and honest two-way relationships. "As a survivor and caregiver, I've seen firsthand the impact that clear and culturally-relevant care discussions can have for patients and their families," explained Randi Ervin , Survivor/Advocate, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) . "Compassionate, empathetic, and relatable communication—delivered at the right time—can make a difficult journey feel a little more manageable for families like mine." Bryce Reeve , PhD, Professor, Population Health Sciences, Duke University School of Medicine, commented: "As a health care system, we have a responsibility to ensure that every individual with cancer has a voice in their care. This is especially important for young children and individuals from marginalized communities whose values, perceptions, and experiences have often been overlooked." "Regardless of our affiliations, whether it be community healthcare, academic medicine, the federal government, or the nonprofit sector, it is critical for us to recognize the richness of collaborating with non-science/healthcare community members to address challenges such as health misinformation and equitable clinical trial participation," concluded Arnethea Sutton, PhD, Interim Assistant Director of Community Outreach and Engagement, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center . "Not only will these collaborations contribute to trust-building amongst all partners, but the richness of diverse thought and perspectives will contribute to the translation of science and ultimately equitable outcomes for all." SIOUX CITY -- The Sioux City Council authorized a subordination agreement Monday between the city and a bank for Siouxland Splash, a 10-acre waterpark planned for the city's north side. There was no discussion on the item, which was part of the council's consent agenda, before the vote. Earlier this year, the council approved the sale of land at 3820 Highway 75 to Siouxland Splash, LLC and Frontline Development, LLC for the development of a multi-phase waterpark. The development agreement green-lighted by the council authorized the sale of land for $229,460 and a schedule of annual payments, which included an initial payment of $100,000 due at closing and five annual payments of $25,892. The annual payments are secured with a mortgage on the property. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in August for Siouxland Splash, a 10-acre waterpark at 3820 Highway 75 North. Dolly Butz "The developer is ready to finalize its permanent financing for the project with Midstates Bank. Midstates Bank has requested the city sign the attached subordination agreement allowing it to establish first security position on the property," city documents stated. "Approval of this resolution will establish the security positions of Midstates Bank and the city by authorizing the city to enter into a subordination agreement with Midstates Bank and complete the financing for this project." Siouxland Splash is slated to be open for business by the summer of 2025. Sioux City currently has several public pools and splash pads, but no waterparks. Joe Zehring, partner and co-owner of Frontline Development, LLC, previously told The Journal that the park will have a 50-foot slide tower with multiple waterslides coming off of it, as well as a large kids play structure with splash elements, lazy river, adult pool area and "surprise" feature that he said is going to be "really unique to the area." A rendering of Siouxland Splash, a waterpark proposed on Highway 75, is shown. Provided The council also approved a rezoning request that will allow for a grocery store at the former site of Casa Del Rey near downtown. The vote was unanimous in favor of the request to rezone property at 1303 and 1315 Douglas St. from mixed use to general commercial. Lusio Torres has been working to clean up the property and open a grocery store with alcohol and tobacco sales. Torres doesn't plan for the store to be open past 9 p.m., according to city documents. The property is currently two separate distinct lots. The 1303 Douglas Street property formerly housed Casa Del Rey, a restaurant that has been closed for more than 10 years. The 1315 Douglas Street parcel served as the satellite transmission site for KCAU, which last owned the property in 2018. The rezoning will for a grocery store to operate out of the former Casa Del Rey restaurant to serve the surrounding neighborhood. The council also passed an ordinance that repeals the city's temporary automobile sales, rental and service moratorium. The vote on third and final consideration was 4 to 1 with councilman Alex Watters casting the lone "no" vote. There was no discussion on the item. The council, during its May 20 meeting, gave city staff direction to create and present a moratorium on the establishment of new automobile sales locations for six months. The moratorium on the establishment of new automobile sales and expansions of locations went into effect on June 8 and ended on Nov. 9. DeAndre Carter muffed a punt in the second half. And those were just the special teams mistakes for the struggling Chicago Bears. Santos' blocked field goal and Carter's turnover were part of another sloppy performance for Chicago in its fifth consecutive loss. The pair of miscues helped set up two of Minnesota's three touchdowns in a 30-27 overtime victory . The Bears (4-7) closed out a miserable three-game homestand after they won their first three games of the season at Soldier Field. They were in position to beat Green Bay last weekend before Santos' 46-yard field goal attempt was blocked on the final play of the Packers' 20-19 win . “It’s tough. ... When things just aren’t going your way, you gotta put your head down and just keep going to work,” tight end Cole Kmet said. “It’s not easy to do but that’s kind of where we’re at.” Chicago and Minnesota were tied at 7 when Caleb Williams threw incomplete on third-and-4 at the Vikings 30 early in the second quarter. Bears coach Matt Eberflus sent Santos out for a 48-yard attempt, but it was knocked down by defensive lineman Jerry Tillery. “I think it was the penetration with the trajectory of the ball,” Santos said. “Had the ball started 3 or 4 inches to the right of both those guys' hands, I think it still goes in through the uprights.” Brian Asamoah returned the blocked kick 22 yards to set the Vikings up with good field position. Sam Darnold then capped a six-play, 53-yard drive with a 5-yard TD pass to Jalen Nailor for a 14-7 lead with 6:29 left in the first half. It was the third blocked field goal for Santos this year, the most for Chicago in a single season since it also had three blocked in 2012. Santos also had a 43-yard try blocked in the fourth quarter of a 35-16 victory over Jacksonville on Oct. 13. The Bears became the first NFL team to allow three blocked field goals in a season since the Browns and Ravens each had three blocked in 2022. “Whenever that happens two games in a row we’ve got to make sure we take a hard look in terms of the protection, the technique and who we have in there,” Eberflus said. “So it's going to be a big thing to look at.” Chicago trailed 17-10 when it forced a Minnesota punt midway through the third quarter. Carter warned his teammates to get out of the way, but it hit the ground and bounced off the inside of his right leg before it was recovered by Bo Richter at the Bears 15. The Vikings turned the mental error into Aaron Jones' 2-yard touchdown run and a 24-10 lead. “Gotta get out of the way of the ball. That’s on me,” Carter said. “I let the team down today. Game shouldn’t have been in the situation it was in. I felt bad for the guys.” Santos and Carter both played a role in a late rally for Chicago. Carter had a 55-yard kickoff return, and Santos got an onside kick to work before making a tying 48-yarder on the final play of regulation. But the Bears stalled on the first possession of overtime, and Darnold drove the Vikings downfield to set up Parker Romo's winning 29-yard field goal. “We're losing in the most unreal situations,” Bears receiver DJ Moore said. “Now it's like the luck's got to go in our favor at some point.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL"Black Myth: Wukong" New Update Officially Announced! It is now adding more wind and solar projects to support its efforts at electrification of transport and buildings, and kicking out gas, and is also contracting its first two big batteries. The first of these, Neoen Australia’s 100 MW, 200 MWh Capital battery is working through the commissioning process, and the Williamsdale battery is being built by Eku Energy, an offshoot of finance and investment giant Macquarie, which has struck a unique revenue sharing arrangement with the government. The newly appointed ACT climate and energy minister Suzanne Orr says the new batteries will help store renewable energy “when it’s most abundant”, making its power supply more resilient and sustainable. “This project demonstrates the ACT Government’s commitment to leading our nation on climate action and delivering tangible benefits to our community by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and supporting the ACT’s commitment to a cleaner, greener city,” she said. The deal with Eku will see the ACT government make quarterly payments for the battery – a guaranteed source of income that helped it reduce the cost of financing – and in return will earn a share of revenue from the operation of the battery, which will play in the FCAS and arbitrage markets. Eku Energy’s chief technology office Elias Saba told Renew Economy that the battery contract market is rapidly evolving in Australia, and battery prices are also coming down. “It’s a good time to be executing projects,” he said. Recently re-elected chief minister Andrew Barr described the battery as a significant milestone in the ACT’s journey towards a more sustainable future. “The project highlights the ACT Government’s commitment to innovative, environmentally friendly energy solutions that will power our city for generations to come while shielding our community from energy price volatility,” he said. Eku Energy’s first big battery project was the 150 MW, 150 MWh Hazelwood battery in Victoria, which it officially opened in 2023. It has now unveiled plans to develop the 300 MW, 1,200 MWh Tramway Road battery that will plug into the nearby Hazelwood terminal substation, near the 350 MW, 1400 MWh Wooreen battery planned by EnergyAustralia. (It is not the same substation as the Hazelwood battery). Eku Energy is also building the 200 MW, 400 MWh Rangebank battery in the south-east of Melbourne in partnership with Shell. In the UK, Eku has opened the 40 MW, 40 MWh Maldon battery in the UK, and has three other battery projects under construction in the UK and Japan. Eku Energy’s previous battery projects in Australia have used Fluence technology, but for Williamsdale it has turned to Tesla technology. Consolidated Power Projects is the main contractor. Saba said battery suppliers are assessed for each project, and Tesla turned out to the best option for the Williamsdale project. The project has created a $500,000 community fund available to eligible local non-profit organisations, and Eku Energy has committed an additional $500,000 to the Australian National University’s Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program.
