And with that, the Wings fired coach Derek Lalonde and replaced him with former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan on Thursday. In a release just after noon, the Wings announced that Steve Yzerman, the Wings’ executive vice-president and general manager, named McLellan the team’s 29th head coach in franchise history and signed McLellan to a multi-year contract. The Wings also hired Trent Yawney as an assistant coach, replacing Bob Boughner, another former Sharks head coach who oversaw the defense and penalty-kill. McLellan will be behind the bench Friday, as the Wings return from the three-day NHL holiday break to host Toronto. Yzerman and McLellan will address the media on Friday. McLellan is San Jose’s all-time winningest coach, compiling a 311-155-63 mark over seven full seasons from 2008-15. He won three Pacific Division titles and had a 30-32 record in the postseason, reaching the conference finals in 2010 and 2011. Sailors on two separate vessels have died during the amid . or signup to continue reading The crew members sailing on Flying Fish Arctos and Bowline yachts were both killed when struck by a sail boom, a pole at the base of the sail, on the first night of the race. Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) vice commodore David Jacobs said the two-day race would continue despite the "tragic situation". "It's a very close community and on a boat itself, they train together, they live together, they cook together, they do everything together. It would be devastating, absolutely, as we are devastated," he said. Prime minister Anthony Albanese offered his condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the crew members. "Our thoughts this morning are with the two sailors that tragically lost their lives in the Sydney to Hobart race overnight," he said. "The Sydney to Hobart is an Australian tradition, and it is heartbreaking that two lives have been lost at what should be a time of joy." NSW Police was notified at 11.50pm on December 26 that a crew member on Flying Fish Arctos had been injured and couldn't be revived after fellow sailors performed CPR. The yacht was rerouted to Jervis Bay. Police were contacted again two and a half hours later, at 2.15am on December 27, with reports that a crew member on Bowline had died after being struck by a sail boom. Bowline was expected to arrive at Bateman's Bay on the morning of December 27. "Flying Fish Arctos was sailing approximately 30 nautical miles east/south-east of Ulladulla when the incident occurred. Fellow crew members performed CPR, but they could not revive their fellow crew," the race organisers said in a statement. NSW-based 50-footer Flying Fish Arctos, built in 2001, had 12 crew members on board. "Bowline was approximately 30 nautical miles east/north-east of Batemans Bay and crew members administered CPR. A short time later officers from the Marine Area Command were informed that CPR had been unsuccessful," CYCA said. South Australia's Bowline had seven sailors on board for her third Sydney to Hobart race. A sailor on the Porco Rosso survived the first night of the race after they were swept overboard in the early hours of the morning, the CYCA vice commodore said. The crew member was rescued after being washed around 1.2 kilometres from their boat. "That is one of the most terrifying experiences that you can have, and this was at 3.14 am, so it was at night, which makes it tenfold more scary," he said. The sailor activated their personal location beacon that sent a satellite message to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). "AMSA set out a plane to start searching, NSW Police were ready to dispatch a boat and a helicopter and a boat in our fleet was diverted to try and help with the search," the vice commodore said. "Fortunately, the boat from which the crew member fell was able to retrieve that crew member and they are healthy and well." On the morning of the second race day, December 27, the CYCA vice commodore said 16 yachts had retired after two had mainsail damage, three were dismastered and the other yachts suffered "various equipment failures". He said 88 boats remained in the race. The vice commodore said the Bureau of Meteorology advised organisers to expect strong to gale-force winds before the race started. "These fleets can handle those winds easily. They're ocean races, they're used to those winds. It was not extreme conditions," he said. "Currently there is about a 25 knot northerly wind. Being a northerly wind, it is behind the boats and pushing them down the coast. "The lead boats were experiencing speeds of between about 25 and 30 knots, so they're travelling extremely fast. "The sea was not unusually large, from the information I have received." The yacht race continues as leading boats are expected to arrive at Hobart's Constitution Dock late on December 27 or early on December 28. ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Peter Frank paddled from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in June to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland this month in his 1982 Sawyer Loon decked canoe, but he’s still got a long way to go. The 23-year-old is about a quarter of the way on his planned journey of roughly 6,000 miles to complete the Great Loop route. This continuous watercourse includes part of the Atlantic and Gulf intracoastal waterways, the Great Lakes, part of the Canadian Heritage Canals and inland U.S. rivers. For Frank, the voyage is largely a way to express his gratitude for still being alive and having the ability to take on the physical challenge, almost a decade after a car accident left him with 14 broken bones and nearly paralyzed. He was hiding in a pile of leaves to surprise a friend when a carful of teens drove through the pile without knowing he was there. “It’s my form of showing the appreciation for being alive and being able to walk and do the things that I can do,” he said during a break in Annapolis, Maryland, earlier this month, a day before setting out again. He also enjoys writing about his experiences on his blog at whereispeterfrank.com and meeting people along the way. “I’m grateful to be out here and to share this story,” Frank says. “In some regard, I feel that I have a responsibility to document the things that I experience for people who don’t get to experience them or that dream of experiencing them. That is why it’s important to me.” Clad in a rabbit-fur hat and clothes he made himself to resemble a pirate, he generally paddles between six and 10 hours a day in his 1982 decked vessel, its shell hollowed to stow supplies. Many nights, he sleeps in a tent by the water. However, he often gets invitations from readers of his blog to stay in their homes. To keep warm, he’s picked up a 1970s vintage heavy down coat, an ultra-light Patagonia jacket he found in a thrift store, 1950s German military cold-weather mittens, a set of warm thermals and several wool socks. Recently, when he felt underdressed, he designed and sewed his own pants that he quilted over cotton flannel for extra layering. He carries 10 portable power banks, plus cords and outlet plugs. He says his electronics bag alone, holding only batteries and cords, weighs almost 25 pounds. “I find that 10 is a good amount and will keep me charged on GPS, radio, cameras and phone battery through any predicament,” he says. “I also carry a solar panel as a backup and can charge almost anything I need.” He doesn’t carry much for self-defense: only a small filet knife for fish and a pocket knife for cutting rope. Frank says he’s confident in his ability to protect himself, such as being mindful in bear country, tying up food or simply avoiding populated areas. “In the long run, it’s never been much of a concern, and anything beyond my control isn’t something I can prevent with anything I can take with me,” he says. The Eagle Scout, who still visits with a local scout troop in his hometown, prepared a hearty portion of his food for the long adventure. He dehydrated game meat and ground beef in an oven and vacuum-sealed it for the trek. Frank earns some income by writing about his experience. His blog also helps him pay grocery bills via his “Rotisserie Chicken Fund,” where people can click to send him money. “Every now and then, somebody will send me $20 online, which helps out a lot for like food and stuff, but in the meantime, I also write for magazines, and the magazines will publish my work,” he says. Frank made long-distance trips by bicycle, unicycle and canoes before. For example, he’s already explored Florida by canoe, which took him about 11 months, ending in May 2023. That’s a significant portion of what he’s trying to do now. He knows he’ll eventually tie his canoe to mangroves during one stretch to sleep. “I really, really do enjoy them,” Frank says of the adventures. “I enjoy being alive most of all, and so I guess for me these expeditions are not only my college and my education, but it’s also my form of worship in a way, my giving thanks to the world for being alive and being able to walk.” The Great Loop is his most challenging trip yet. While the journey is a bucket-list route for avid boaters, it’s rarely done with reliance on muscling a canoe. Frank also travels clockwise, which he says is the harder route because he’s paddling against the current on inland rivers for more than 25% of the trip. Frank launched his trip on June 27 in Escanaba, Michigan, where he’s from. He paddled into Canada and crossed Lake Ontario, where he camped on islands. On his way south, he went through New York City, floating by the Statue of Liberty. While he’s given some long study to the Great Loop route, not everything has been perfectly mapped out for the canoeist. He says he’s had to do some wayfinding on his own. While leaving New York, he took the Delaware and Raritan Canal, using portages he says he found that weren’t mentioned in route plans. Frank says he hopes to write an informational guide to fill in some gaps about details of the route. He’s also thinking about writing an autobiography. “I’d like to put something together that’s purely educational that would be a guide, and then I’d like to put something together that’s kind of like the story of a young man finding himself in a world that he doesn’t fully understand yet,” Frank says. He was living with his parents before he started traveling when he left home to unicycle across the U.S. for charity when he was 19. “I’ll sometimes go back and visit for a couple of months between expeditions, but for the last three years I’ve just been traveling full time,” he says. Everything he owns is in his canoe. He says he doesn’t need much money to keep on flowing. “Is this comfortable or practical? Absolutely not,” he said, “but through the struggles of following my dreams with little to nothing, I’ve developed the capacity to enjoy less, and as a result, I live well with little.” He also describes the trip as a voyage in self-discovery. “It’s very hard to picture where I will be three years from now, as I’m still young and growing, but I’m hoping that on this journey, this very long journey of self-discovery, I’ll perhaps find that,” he says. He estimates it will take roughly 17 months to finish the loop. He’ll need to complete it by next November, he says, due to a natural deadline set by the freezing of the lakes he’ll need to cross. “I would say that nature is my biggest competitor, most definitely,” Frank says. INDIANAPOLIS — Death. Taxes. And Quenton Nelson. Star running back Jonathan Taylor suggested Thursday the Indianapolis Colts’ All-Pro left guard is one of life’s inevitabilities. A legion of NFL defenders likely would nod in resigned agreement. “Any time backs come in, I always tell them, ‘Listen, when in doubt, you know 5-6 (Nelson’s jersey number) will take you to the light,’ ” Taylor said. “But what he does is (a result of) preparation throughout the week, what he does in the offseason, his routine in season. He’s a true professional, and it shows week in, week out and year after year. So I’m just thankful, and I’m glad that I’m on a team with him.” Nelson played a pivotal role in Sunday’s 38-30 victory against the Tennessee Titans, helping to usher the way for Taylor to gain 218 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. The Colts gained a single-season franchise record 335 total yards on the ground, and Nelson shook off a fourth-quarter ankle injury to return even while many on the sideline suggested he should rest with the game apparently in hand. Nelson again put together a highlight reel of dominant blocks, none more impressive than his effort on quarterback Anthony Richardson’s 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. After pulling from his position, Nelson quickly got to the second level in front of Richardson and drove his defender through the back of the end zone. The quarterback essentially jogged into the end zone behind Nelson, untouched and unbothered. “It makes it easier for me,” Richardson said. “I get to see 56 running around. I just get to follow up behind him and let him do his dirty work, and I just follow up and get the touchdown. I get all the credit, but, no, he does all the dirty work for us. So we appreciate that for sure.” Nelson emphatically threw his arms up in celebration as Richardson crossed the goal line. That’s also in character for the hulking lineman. He’s almost always the first player to pick up a ball carrier after a run – no matter the distance from the line of scrimmage – and Richardson said Nelson often is happier than the player who scored each time Indianapolis finds the end zone. It’s a mentality Nelson said was installed by former Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, and his joy is the product of a total team effort. “There’s 11 guys doing their job for the common goal of scoring a touchdown and trying to win the game,” Nelson said. “Seeing it come to fruition after all the hard work we put in during the week is awesome.” Guard is far from a glamour position, and it’s not among the most highly valued roles in the NFL. Very few players at the position become stars. But Nelson is on another level. When he was drafted with the sixth overall pick in 2018 after a sterling career for the Fighting Irish, Colts owner Jim Irsay immediately made Hall of Fame comparisons. Nelson has lived up to the high expectations with three first-team All-Pro nods and six Pro Bowl appearances in his first six seasons. He’s one of the most recognizable names on Indianapolis’ roster and a fan favorite. But, despite outside appearances, Nelson’s success was not inevitable. His unmatched drive and work ethic have allowed him to reach the game’s elite levels. “I think his competitive nature that he brings every single day, his toughness, his attitude, his love for the game, and he plays that way,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said of what sets Nelson apart. “I mean, he shows up for his guys every single day and does it the right way and plays for the guy next to him every single time. “He’s got that relentless determination that you want up front. Just a hell of a leader for us. And obviously, when we need a big play, too, a lot of the times he’s our lead blocker in those situations.” Tight end Mo Alie-Cox (toe), Richardson (back, foot) and linebacker E.J. Now the focus turns to the annual international competition featuring the future stars of the NHL. Ottawa, Canada is the site for this year's competition, featuring 10 of the top U20 teams from around the world who are gunning for a gold medal. The United States enters the tournament as the defending gold medallists from 2024, going undefeated at last year's World Juniors and knocking off Sweden in the gold medal game. Competing at the tournament is mostly a mix of prospects from the 2023 and 2024 NHL Draft classes, highlighted by first-round picks Ryan Leonard (USA), Gabe Perreault (USA), Zeev Buium (USA), Sam Dickinson (Canada), Brayden Yager (Canada), Axel Sandin-Pellikka (Sweden) and Konsta Helenius (Finland). Riding a 6-game win streak, the Eagles head to Hollywood again for a rematch with the young RamsCeeDee Lamb’s season is over. The Cowboys shut down their star wide receiver due to the ongoing shoulder injury that he had played through since the middle of the season. “Additional examinations and scans this week on CeeDee Lamb’s shoulder have determined that his injury has now progressed to a point that he will be listed as ‘Out’ for the remaining two games of the season,” NFL Network reported Thursday , citing a team update. “[Lamb] will undergo a process of treatment and rehabilitation for his shoulder,” the update read. “[The injury] is not currently expected to require surgery and [Lamb] is projected to make a full recovery.” A three-time Pro Bowler, Lamb, 25, has been one of the Cowboys’ lone bright spots amid a season of disappointments. The fifth-year wideout will finish his 2024 campaign with 101 receptions, 1,194 yards and six touchdowns, making the fourth consecutive season in which Lamb eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark. The Cowboys, sitting at 7-8 and mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, have no reason to leave their best player out on the field and risk worsening the shoulder injury. Lamb has reportedly been playing through the pain since Week 9, when he sustained the injury during a loss to the Falcons.
