October visitation declined 1.8 percent from a year ago but the region is still on track to see more visitors than last year, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported Wednesday. The organization that promotes and monitors Southern Nevada tourism said 3.6 million visitors were in Las Vegas for the month. The city is still on pace to have a higher total this year than in 2023 with 35 million visitors in the first 10 months of the year, 2.4 percent ahead of last year’s pace. October was only the second month this year to have a year-over-year decline from 2023, with July figures down just 0.4 percent. Kevin Bagger, vice president of the LVCVA Research Center, explained that October 2023 was particularly robust resulting in most tourism indicators being off from a year ago. Much of the visitation decline resulted from convention attendance being off 12.7 percent from last year. Bagger said 559,200 attended conventions in October, but TwitchCon, which had 30,000 attendees in 2023, met at the San Diego Convention Center in September this year. Hotel occupancy, average daily room rate and passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport were all down from a year ago. The amount of vehicle traffic on highways leading to Las Vegas was the only positive indicator for the month with traffic up 1.7 percent to 134,155 according to the Nevada Department of Transportation, which doesn’t differentiate between tourists and local traffic. Las Vegas also has fewer hotel rooms to fill with the closures of the Tropicana and The Mirage earlier this year. The city’s hotel inventory is now at 150,646. The average daily room rate fell 7 percent to $216.99 a night in October, with the Strip ADR off 7.6 percent to $232.25. Bagger noted that last year’s ADR was a record for October. The LVCVA calculated hotel occupancy at 85.7 percent, down 2 percentage points, but weekend occupancy was up 0.4 percentage points to 94.6 percent. One other tourism indicator, Clark County’s gross gaming revenue, is pending as the Nevada Gaming Control Board is expected to release those results next week. There were mixed results for the outlying Southern Nevada communities supported by LVCVA marketing efforts. Visitor volume for Laughlin was up 4.1 percent to 106,000 for the month in October. Laughlin’s average daily room rate was down 1.3 percent to $55.01 a night, while occupancy was off 1.3 percentage points to 46.5 percent. In Mesquite, visitor volume was down 9.4 percent to 77,000 people. But the average daily room rate was up 12 percent to $92.41 a night, while the occupancy rate languished by 3 percentage points to 81.9 percent.Qatar PM sees 'momentum' on Gaza talks after US election

AP News Summary at 4:15 p.m. ESTChairman All Progressive Congress APC Ebonyi State Chapter Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha has commended Governor Francis Nwifuru’s led administration for creating enabling environment for businesses to strive. According to him, the peace and security Nwifuru provided in the State including the completion of Chuba Okadigbo International Airport Runway has proven that his administration is doing very well. Okoro-Emegha stated this after the 2023 governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP in the State Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, accused Nwifuru government of wasting N20billion Ebonyi resources on the Airport. He said “We are not surprised, Anyi Chuks cannot say that the wife of the president’s visit to Ebonyi is a waste of fund. He is somebody who do not look beyond his nose. What is being at the centre of politics? Don’t you know that it is a plus if the president or the wife of the president visits a state. There is no way it will not attract a positive development. “Talking about our airport, if he is not myopic, he should have known that in the aviation industry, cement technology runway does not go because the smoothness of cement technology can never be the same with asphalting and that is what the governor has done. “The wife of the president landed there and said this is the best and the highest in the whole country. Who is Anyi Chuks to say it is a waste of fund? Since he feels he is a big man, he has private jet and flies to other states, why can’t he fly to our airport. Well, the Ebonyians want it and the governor knows the development it is going to bring to the state. “People from some part of Abia are going to use that airport. People from some areas of Cross River are going to use that airport. People from some parts of Okigwe in Imo State are going to be using that airport and Ebonyians will stop losing their lives trying to go to airport in Enugu. He also said that the governor buying aircraft is a waste of fund. I don’t join issues. He is a failed entity.” READ MORE FROM: NIGERIAN TRIBUNE Get real-time news updates from Tribune Online! The controversy around a religious Christmas sign that was taken down in downtown Kelowna continues. Two days after a sign stating 'Keep Christ in Christmas' was removed from the nativity scene display at Stuart Park, Kelowna-Centre MLA Kristina Loewen went to social media to express her opinion on the matter. "We believe that it's an important detail that Christmas is a Christian holiday," said Loewen in her video, referring to 'we' as all of the MLAs for the Central Okanagan. "We will be standing united and defending all British Columbians rights to religion and freedom of expression, speech, thought, belief," she added. "Canada is an incredible country full of diverse cultures and religions, and a wide variety of views, and I think that's one of the things that makes us so incredible." Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream MLA Tara Armstrong agreed with her fellow Conservative, quote-tweeting the video and saying "a great message from a colleague and friend. I'm proud to be part of a team that stands for what's right." Macklin McCall, MLA for West Kelowna, also quote-tweeted Loewen's post. However, Kelowna-Mission MLA Gavin Dew appears to not have commented on social media. The nativity scene is put up by the Knights of Columbus every year and a permit is given from the City of Kelowna to do so. When the 'Keep Christ in Christmas' sign was displayed beside the scene on Monday, Dec. 9, some people in the community, including the Kelowna Atheists, Skeptics, and Humanists Association (KASHA) took issue. A letter by KASHA to Black Press Media on Dec. 9, stated the nativity scene is part of Christmas, just as "lights, festive trees, and other decorative displays" are also. "This message is not merely festive—it is political, advocating for a specific religious interpretation of the holiday," said KASHA about the sign. The next day, the sign was taken down and the City of Kelowna confirmed that the sign was not part of the Knights of Columbus' permit for the nativity scene. The Knights of Columbus had no comment regarding the matter. Capital News reached out to Loewen for further comment but was met with an automatic e-mail reply. Additionally, the City of Kelowna stated it had no comment on Loewen's video. However, Ian Bushfield the executive director of the B.C. Humanist Association did have a comment. "Freedom of religion in Canada includes freedom from religion," said Bushfield in an e-mailed statement. "Ms. Loewen and all Christians are obviously free to celebrate Christmas as a Christian holiday but our governments have a clear duty of religious neutrality. That means neither endorsing nor prohibiting any religion over any other. That sign, and arguably even the nativity scene, being on public property breaches that duty. She can put the sign up at her church or at her own house but we do not live in a theocracy." Bushfield has previously stated that BCHA is an organization committed to secular values. “Part of that is the separation of religion and government," said Bushfield. The City of Kelowna also said it received five letters on the matter when the sign was up but none since it's been taken down.
Poll Shows Majority of New Yorkers Support Trump on DeportationPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown’s troubles connecting on the field have yet to blow into a family feud inside the locker room — honest, both Philadelphia Eagles stars said. Between Hurts and Brown, it’s all good in Philly. “Me and Jalen are good,” Brown said. Added Hurts, “We’re good, we’re good.” So there will be no sit-ups in the driveway, no apologies on the front lawn, and certainly, it seems, no rift between Hurts and his No. 1 receiver. Hurts and Brown each downplayed any hint of a fissure Wednesday between the two after defensive end Brandon Graham appeared this week on a Philadelphia sports radio station and suggested there was friction between the Pro Bowl duo. The two were close friends long before they became teammates and Hurts is the godfather for Brown’s daughter. Graham's comments — in which he noted “ things have changed ,” between the two, without offering specifics — exploded into tabloid and fan fodder this week in Philadelphia. His insinuations that the duo were not on the same page came on the heels of Brown's quote after a sluggish win over Carolina that the “ offense ” wasn’t playing up to standard, even with the Eagles at 11-2. “BG knows he spoke out of place,” Hurts said. Graham, who is sidelined with a triceps injury, clarified his comments later to an ESPN reporter, saying he made the wrong assumption about the relationship between Hurts and Brown and planned to apologize to both players. Brown, with 109 yards receiving combined the last two games, said his beef with the offense wasn't directed at Hurts. It was everything from offensive coordinator Kellen Moore's play calling to execution to all the ingredients in a successful offense that make a team a Super Bowl contender. The usually pass-happy Eagles have leaned more on running back Saquon Barkley, who set the franchise season rushing record of 1,623 yards against the Panthers and is chasing Eric Dickerson for the NFL mark. “Obviously, it's not about running the ball,” Brown told reporters. “He's about to win MVP. Clearly. What other things can we do on offense? We have to pass the ball. That can go into protection, that can go into picking up the block, that goes to us getting open quicker. Getting on the same page.” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said he never witnessed any issues between Hurts and Brown and only saw two players who worked hard together, even working on routes after practice and seemed to have a deep personal connection on and off the field. “You guys get to see three hours every Sunday where emotions can play as high as they’re going to play,” Sirianni said. “I get to see these guys every single day, how they go about their business and interact with each other.” Brown, who was coming off consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons, wasn't necessarily wrong in his frustration with the recent stagnation of the passing game. Hurts, who signed a contract extension ahead of the 2023 season that was worth $179.3 million guaranteed , has thrown for fewer than 200 yards in three straight games. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith — who also complained Sunday about the offense — was also coming off consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons but has yet to break 100 yards in a game this season. Brown has four 100-yard games, well off last season’s run when he topped 100 yards in six straight games and seven times overall. Hurts has been more efficient than explosive this season but has still thrown 12 touchdown passes to just one interception — and rushed for 11 more scores — during the Eagles' nine-game winning streak that has them on the brink of clinching the NFC East. Maybe playing the Steelers on Sunday at home can snap the Eagles out of their offensive malaise. Hurts threw three TD passes to Brown in a 35-13 win in 2022. “Do we all have things to get better at in the passing game? Yeah, I think that’s obvious,” Sirianni said. “I think that’s what we’ve been talking about. We all have things that we’ve got to get better at, coaches, players. But this is why this is the greatest team sport there is. It takes everybody. It takes every single person being together, every single person for the success to happen. It’s just not a one-person thing.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Copyright 2024 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. The undefeated Vernon Panthers will look to ground some northern birds in the semifinals at the 2024 Tsumura Basketball Invitational Girls High School Basketball tournament in the Fraser Valley. The Panthers will face the Duchess Park Condors of Prince George at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13. Dave Tetreault's crew advanced to the Select 16 semifinals by freezing the South Delta Sun Devils 63-54 in a Thursday quarterfinal. The Sun Devils led 14-1 before the Panthers got going, tying the game at the half, then taking their own 13-point lead late in the third quarter. But South Delta clawed back to pull ahead 54-52, only to see the Panthers end the game on an 11-0 run. Paige Leahy led VSS with 19 points, Chloe Collins added 15, and Adie Janke had 14. Collins and Janke nailed key three-point shots in the final quarter for the Cats. The Panthers will next face the smothering defence of the Condors, who defeated Langley's Walnut Grove Gators 88-27 in their quarterfinal. Duchess Park held the Gators to just 11 first-half points. In the Super 16 bracket, the Kelowna Owls were bounced from the championship side, falling 62-56 to Langley's Brookswood Bobcats. The Owls held Grade 10 phee-nom Jordyn Nohn to just 17 points. Nohr erupted for 52 points in the Bobcats' opening round game. Mavleen Chahal led the Owls with 25 points while Ava Thiessen scored all 12 of her points from the three-point line. On the consolation side, the Okanagan Mission Huskies of Kelowna evened their tournament record at 1-1 with a 56-50 win over the Sa-Hali Sabres of Kamloops. Susan Collins on Wednesday as he pushed to win enough votes for confirmation. He said he will not back down after allegations of excessive drinking and sexual misconduct. She said she had a “good, substantive” discussion with Hegseth and “covered a wide range of topics,” including sexual assault in the military, Ukraine and NATO. But she said she would wait until a hearing, and notably a background check, to make a decision. “I asked virtually every question under the sun,” Collins told reporters as she left her office after the meeting. “I pressed him both on his position on military issues as well as the allegations against him, so I don’t think there was anything that we did not cover.” The meeting with Collins was closely watched as she is seen as more likely than most of her Republican Senate colleagues to vote against some of Trump’s Cabinet picks. She and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a fellow moderate Republican, did not shy from opposing Trump in his first term when they wanted to do so and sometimes supported President Joe Biden’s nominees for the judicial and executive branches. And Hegseth, an infantry combat veteran and former “Fox & Friends” weekend host, is working to gain as many votes as he can as some senators have expressed concerns about his personal history and lack of management experience. “I’m certainly not going to assume anything about where the senator stands,” Hegseth said as he left Collins’ office. “This is a process that we respect and appreciate. And we hope, in time, overall, when we get through that committee and to the floor that we can earn her support.” Hegseth met with Murkowski on Tuesday. He has also been meeting repeatedly with Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, a military veteran who has said she is a survivor of sexual assault and has spent time in the Senate working on improving how attacks are reported and prosecuted within the ranks. On Monday, Ernst said after a meeting with him that he had committed to selecting a senior official to prioritize those goals. Republicans will have a 53-49 majority next year, meaning Trump cannot lose more than three votes on any of his nominees. It is so far unclear whether Hegseth will have enough support, but Trump has stepped up his pressure on senators in the last week. “Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Trump posted on his social media platform last week.
AP Trending SummaryBrief at 5:10 p.m. ESTManitobans will once again have options to get to and from northern Manitoba by bus beginning this Sunday. “We are proud to step up and re-launch this route with a renewed focus on reliability, comfort, and community needs,” Kasper Wabinski, the president of Kasper Bus Lines said Wednesday in a media release. The transportation company, which is based out of Thunder Bay, announced that the “re-launch” of the Winnipeg-Dauphin-The Pas and return bus route will begin on Dec. 1, bringing back bus service between southern and northern Manitoba for the first time since the Mahihkan Bus Lines ceased operations back in September. “Manitoba’s intercity transportation history has faced significant setbacks, including the 2018 cessation of Greyhound Canada operations, and the shutdown of Mahihkan Bus Lines, leaving many communities without essential transportation options,” Wabinski said. “This milestone marks, not just the resumption of service, but the beginning of a new era in Manitoba’s intercity transportation, addressing decades of challenges, with safety, reliability, and modernized operations.” Along with getting people where they need to go, the company is also pledging modernized buses and technology including complimentary wi-fi for passengers, and a focus on customer service, comfort and safety. “This service is not just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about reconnecting families and supporting northern Manitoba’s economic and social fabric,” Wabinski said. “We are committed to doing things properly and safely.” The company is also welcoming back some of the experienced staff from former bus operators, “ensuring familiar and dependable service for local riders.” The route will be rolled out in phases beginning this Sunday. During the initial phase, the service will depart Winnipeg on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and return to Winnipeg from The Pas on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The company said they hope to expand to daily service “as demand grows and operations stabilize in the near future.” Tickets and schedules for the route are available online at gokasper.com , or by calling 1-855-566-2378.
