The Daniel Jones era is officially over in New York. The New York Giants officially granted the 27-year-old his release following the decision to bench him following the team's 2-8 start to the season. "Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him," Giants president John Mara said in a statement released by the franchise. "We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team." This officially closes the chapter for his time in New York and also means he is eligible to be picked up by any team in the league. That is unlikely to happen this week, as Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that any team to pick him up would have to pay the remainder of his $11.8 million cap hit this season. While he may not be picked up this season, Jones should have some suitors for 2025. Here are a few potential landing spots for the former first-round pick. The Las Vegas Raiders looked to Gardner Minshew to lead the team in 2024. That gamble has not paid off thus far. Minshew has thrown for 1,783 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions and has led the team to a 2-6 record. Backup Aidan O'Connell has not been any better, throwing for 455 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while guiding the team to an 0-2 record. Collectively, the quarterbacks have led the team to a 2-8 start and they will likely be competing with the Giants for a high draft position in April. The Raiders should be a prime candidate to draft a top quarterback like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders at the draft, but bringing in a veteran like Jones alongside a rookie could be intriguing. Jones has shown more in his career than Minshew and should come at a reasonable price as he looks to revitalize his career. The Panthers are another team that could be in the market for a quarterback at this year's draft but adding Jones could be a strong option as well 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young has struggled to this point in his career but has shown some signs of improvement in recent weeks. He has led the team to two straight victories and could be making a case to get another shot next season. If he remains but shows similar struggles in 2025, having a player like Jones could be huge to keep the team afloat. Andy Dalton has occupied that role this season but the 37-year-old does not have the same upside as Jones going forward. If Jones wants an immediate chance to get revenge on his former team, the Dallas Cowboys present a great opportunity. The Cowboys are committed to Dak Prescott for the long-term future but he will not return in 2024 due to a hamstring injury. The quarterback room is currently headlined by Cooper Rush and Trey Lance and Jones has shown more at the NFL level than either of those two. Dallas is set to play New York on Thanksgiving and while that could be a tough turnaround to get Jones ready to play, it could add a little juice to the matchup. Additionally, a potential path to the starting role this season could help Jones improve his stock for free agency. While Prescott will re-assume the starting role in 2025, Lance and Rush are both set to hit unrestricted free agency following the season, so Jones could become a strong backup for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Vladimir Putin admitted Saturday Russian air defence was working when an Azerbaijani Airlines plane tried to land in Grozny before crashing, breaking the Kremlin's silence as speculation mounted Russia may have accidentally shot the plane. The Russian leader called his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev, apologising the incident took place in Russian airspace, while stopping short of saying Russian air defence shot the plane. Baku, meanwhile, said Aliyev had "emphasised" to Putin that the plane was hit by outside interference over Russia, saying it wanted those responsible "held accountable." The phone call between the allies came three days after the Embraer 190 plane flying from Baku to Grozny crashed in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people of 67 onboard. Western experts have pointed the finger at Russia, while the US said it had "early indications" the plane was shot. Putin told Aliyev the plane had tried to land in Grozny "several times." "During this time, Grozny, (the town of) Mozdok and Vladikavkaz were being attacked by Ukrainian combat drones and Russian air defence was repelling these attacks," Putin said, according to a Kremlin transcript. It added that: "Vladimir Putin had presented his apologies that the tragic incident happened in Russia's air space and again expressed his deep and genuine condolences to the families of the dead, wishing a quick recovery to those affected." But Aliyev appeared in no doubt that the plane was shot at over Russia. "President Ilham Aliyev emphasised that the Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane encountered external physical and technical interference while in Russian airspace, resulting in a complete loss of control," Baku's presidency said in a statement. It added Aliyev "highlighted that the multiple holes in the aircraft's fuselage, injuries sustained by passengers and crew due to foreign particles penetrating the cabin mid-flight, and testimonies from surviving flight attendants and passengers confirm evidence of external physical and technical interference." Survivors have told the media about hearing an "explosion" as the plane attempted to land. Aliyev's office said Baku wanted an investigation "ensuring those responsible are held accountable." Speculation has swirled for days, with the US weighing in Friday. Its White House spokesman John Kirby said Washington had "early indications that would certainly point to the possibility that this jet was brought down by Russian air defence systems." Putin's phone call came after the Kremlin had earlier said it would be "inappropriate" to comment on the speculations. Moscow also said it will work with an investigation by Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. While some in Azerbaijan -- a Russian ally -- have called for an apology from Moscow, Kazakhstan, one of Moscow's main allies, has not pointed the finger at Russia. Russian officials had earlier said that Ukrainian drones were attacking Grozny that day. Its top diplomat Kaja Kallas said the crash was a "stark reminder" of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which international investigations said was downed by a surface-to-air missile by Russian-backed rebels over eastern Ukraine in 2014. A series of airlines have this week began cancelling flights to Russia after the incident, including national carriers of Moscow's allies. The vast majority of Western airlines have stopped flights to Russia since Moscow launched its Ukraine offensive. A Cumberland County man already facing charges he exchanged sexually explicit messages and photos with teens on SnapChat is now facing additional charges involving a 15-year-old girl from Pennsylvania, authorities said. Michael Romig, 29, of Commercial Township, was charged Monday with third-degree engaging in sexual conduct which would impair or debauch the morals of a child, first-degree causing or permitting a child to engage in a prohibited sexual act or in the simulation of such an act or to be portrayed in a sexually suggestive manner and second-degree luring, authorities said Friday. A detective from the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office was contacted Dec. 19 by the mother of the 15-year-old from Galeton, Pennsylvania, after the girl became upset when she lost contact with someone she had been chatting with for two years, authorities said. The mother searched his name on the Internet and found a press release from Dec. 13 announcing Romig’s arrest , officials said. Romig was charged Dec. 13 with causing a child to engage in a prohibited sexual act, a first-degree crime, as well as possession of child sexual abuse material and a related offense, authorities said. Officials in New Jersey began investigating Romig after Columbus, Ohio police informed the prosecutor’s office that someone in Cumberland County was talking with a 10-year-old girl on social media and sharing inappropriate materials with her. He had 16 photos and 26 videos among 276 files when he was taken into custody and investigators determined he was talking via SnapChat to several girls between 10 and 15 years old, authorities said. Romig was accused this week of randomly adding the 15-year-old Pennsylvania girl as a friend on Snapchat in December 2022 and told her his name was “Jason” and said that he was 17, detectives said. They then then began to talk daily on Snapchat and other online platforms, authorities said. He sent her naked pictures of himself and asked her to send him sexually explicit photos and videos as well, authorities said. He eventually told her his real age and name and convinced her not to tell her parents, authorities said. They continued to communicate daily until Romig’s arrest, authorities said. Romig was still jailed as of Friday afternoon and prosecutors said they were seeking to have him held until trial.
